Valderrama has been consistently ranked as number 1 in Continental Europe since the late 80’s and has been included in the Top 100 in the World since 1990. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6418 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world.

It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot.

The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course architects, and was originally known as Las Aves (Sotogrande New). In 1984, Mr. Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never seen before in Europe. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. Together the two men spent many hours walking around the course and discussing where and how improvements should be made.

The course was renamed Valderrama, after the ancient estate on which the land is situated. The pair shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989.

No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish.

The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition”.

Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively.

In recent years, Valderrama has hosted seven editions of Andalucía Masters (Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters), which is one of the most prestigious tournaments held by the European Tour.

An arduous renewal process of the golf course has recently been completed to modernize and provide it with new infrastructure and equipment maintaining the identity and excellence of the Club.

In addition, Valderrama is considered a wild life reserve and has been awarded the Audubon Environmental Certificate.

25 YEARS OF A DREAM THE 1997 RYDER CUP

The Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters returns to Real Club Valderrama, an historic venue There are not many competitions capable of influencing the evolution of a sport or even an entire country. Spain has been fortunate enough to host some of these events, such as the 1982 World Cup, the 1992 Olympic Games and the Ryder Cup held in 1997 at Real Club Valderrama, home of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters. From October 13-16, spectators will have the opportunity to enjoy this event of the DP World Tour, the Spanish event with a higher money purse, and walk the same holes played by golfers such as Tiger Woods, José María Olazábal, Fred Couples and Nick Faldo in that historic duel won by the European team captained by Seve Ballesteros.

That Ryder Cup, the first held in continental Europe, marked a turning point in the popularisation of golf in our country and served as a spectacular boost for the promotion of Spain, Andalusia and the Costa del Sol as tourist and sport destination, benefits that are still being reaped 25 years later. Furthermore, that Ryder Cup, which came to Real Club Valderrama thanks to the efforts of Jaime Ortiz-Patiño and the support of a good number of institutional and private sponsors, is inextricably linked to the figure of the two number one players that Spanish golf has had throughout its history: Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm.

Seve Ballesteros, transformer of today’s DP World Tour, was at the helm of the European team (which included José María Olazábal and Nacho Garrido as players and Miguel Ángel Jiménez as vice-captain) and his meticulous approach was indispensable in leading the European team to the final victory over the

United States. The 14 ½ -13 ½ win was clinched on the last hole of the final match of the final day when Colin Montgomerie conceded the final putt to Scott Hoch to earn a vital half point.

“For me it was a very special Ryder Cup: after all the Ryder Cups Seve and I had played together, it was the first time I played for him as captain. Seve was attentive to everything.

He demanded a lot from us, the same as he had always demanded from himself and he was on top of all the players. Seve studied the American team’s game in depth and prepared the course so that we all played from the same areas to have the same opportunities, and with the help of “Pisha”, his right-hand man, he was absolutely right when choosing pairings.

He conveyed to us the passion he put into everything he did and he was a great captain”, recalled José María Olazábal on the 20th anniversary of the 1997 Ryder Cup. Although Jon Rahm was just a two years old kid when the Ryder Cup was played at Valderrama, his sporting future was also marked by that competition.

“Some friends of my father’s were at the 1997 Ryder Cup. When they came back, they encouraged him to play golf and we signed up for Eduardo Celles’ school. That’s how it all started, if it wasn’t for that Ryder Cup, I probably wouldn’t be here”, explained Rahm on his first appearance at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters. That trip by Jon Rahm’s parents friends, was decisive in directing their children steps towards golf, something that also changed the history of this sport in our country.

For his part, Rahm has always pointed to Seve Ballesteros as a beacon and reference.

“I don’t take it as a pressure being seen as a revulsive for golf, for me it’s a motivation. I would love to be able to help golf, even if it’s a small part of what Seve did in his time. I play thanks to him and the 1997 Ryder Cup at Valderrama,” he explained at the 2018 Open de España.

The course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the best in Spain according to the most prestigious specialised publications, has been hosting top level tournaments such as the Volvo Masters since 1988, but was established in that glorious and unforgettable Ryder Cup. 25 years later, spectators will be able to experience again a good deal of unique moments at the eighth edition of the Estrella Damm N.A. La Reserva’s ‘X Factor’ shines through in Golf World rankings La Reserva Club Sotogrande has placed 30th in the Golf World ‘Top 100 X Factor Courses’ rankings list.

The extensive list ranks Europe’s most desirable golf courses on their jaw-dropping settings, dramatic holes, tournament pedigree, and overall look and conditioning.

This latest European Top 100 ranking from Golf World identifies courses that both ‘blow your mind and subconsciously charm you’.

Five-star luxury coming to La Hacienda in 2024 with Opening of Fairmont Hotel Spain’s La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, formerly known as Alcaidesa, has highlighted its ambition to become one of the most exclusive and luxurious golf resorts in Spain by signing a deal with Fairmont Hotel & Residences.

Links Golf Course The NEW Links Course, is our signature course, being the only links course in the region. It is an 18 hole, Par 72 course and inaugurated in 1992. In 2021 new ownership had a vision to transform Alcaidesa into a high end destination and left this unique project in the hands of Kurtis Bowman who is responsible for designing a few of the legendary Jack Nicklaus golf signature courses. The orography of the land is formed

by gentle slopes descending towards the sea, finishing on a beautiful beach, creating a front of nearly 2 km. This allows for the majority of the holes to run alongside the beach. The difficulty of the course lies mainly in the condition of the prevailing winds in the area. One of the special features of the course which most impresses visitors is its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar’s rock and Africa. The total distance is 5,931m.

The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director.

“I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition” Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama is home of the Andalucia Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

The greens likewise and they are huge. In all an excellent course for the money and sure to be a firm favourite because although it is tough it is also fair so should suit all levels of golfer.

After your game, wander into the Clubhouse bar to relax and enjoy drinks and food on the sunny terrace.

Toughest hole: 10th. Par 4, 405 metres.

Stroke index 1 hole and rightly so. Tee off over a valley to a small fairway that runs from left to right in front of you. If you do mange to find the fairway, you have a long second to the large green with water to the right, slicers beware!

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol. The front seven holes go up into the hills with fantastic views of the sea (particularly from the highest part of the course on the 8th tee).

Then the back 11 proceed to come down the hill giving a different perspective entirely from the front 7 holes.

What you notice about Dona Julia is the overall quality of the course, everything is just how it should be and the fairways are spotless.

Flamingos Golf This 18-hole, 71-par course measuring 5,714 metres was designed by the Spanish architect Antonio García Garrido, known for his meticulous landscaping. It has a great variety of trees and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. The immaculate contoured greens are generous in size but the fairways are slender on the first half of the course, where more precision is needed than on the second half.

The strategically placed bunkers contain white marble chips; most fairways are sown with Bermuda whilst the greens and tees have been sown with Penncross.

With many good golf holes to choose from, without doubt the 6th, a dogleg left par 5, must be the best hole on the course. The drive has to be accurate to avoid two well positioned bunkers, left and right, and your second shot must favour the left centre of the fairway to miss the lake that catches any wayward ball. Finally, your approach has again to be accurate, to a two tiered green, to give you any chance of that elusive birdie.

Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels.

Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with

olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well.

Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens.

Atalaya also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF LAS BRISAS

The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.

For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA):

“Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played.”

The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden.

especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros, only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the Pro-Am played the day before the competition.

Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete toplevel golf experience.

During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous guests, with 44,000 players visiting the course in 1975. In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf Marbella we find the excellent facilities of the Golf Academy and Driving Range. Cabopino Golf Marbella is located on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little Cabopino Port.

The Course was designed by Mr. Juan Ligués Creus, who´s layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest.

The Course has three par 3´s, two par 5´s and the rest par 4´s. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, 3rd hole would be the one to mention. The tee box perched on the side of the cliff presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80 metres to the fairway, then you face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes 13 and 15 are also attractive, with streams and lakes.

The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies - wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees.

In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica - as it is known by its original name - is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle.

The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

LAURO GOLF RESORT Lauro Golf Resort can be found in the middle of beautiful pure nature in spectacular surroundings. The course consists of 27 holes that can be played in three different combinations, all par 72.

The course was designed by the late Folco Nardi and the idea was to create a course that was technically challenging yet not too difficult. With a good concentration and the correct selection of the clubs the player can end up with a good score in one of the 50 competitions played every year at Lauro Golf.

The extension of the course with the holes 1927 designed by Mariano Benitez follows the same lines and equally requires concentration and skills. The course is moderately flat and can be played by foot though there are two holes located on the side of the mountain and from which we can enjoy some spectacular views over the valley of Guadalhorce and the Mediterranean.

The club house is located in an old Andalusian building, Cortijo el Paredón, where you can find the restaurant, changing and locker rooms, pro shop and the Caddy Master´s Office. On our premises and the surroundings you can also find a swimming pool, a padel tennis club, lawn bowls club and an equestrian centre. In the middle of the cortijo there is a fabulous patio, with an enormous ficus tree in the middle which offers shade to the players enjoying their food and drinks after a game of golf.

From the Málaga- Algeciras MA-20 Dual Carriageway take the Coín Exit – 1 and follow the signs for “Parador de Golf”

From Malaga airport. On the Algeciras / Motril-Granada-Sevilla highway, towards Malaga, take the exit Parque TechnlogicoCartama-Campanillas (near Carrefour shopping centre) and after aproximately 7 kms, take the exit Mercamalaga (House in ruins as landmark). Turn right at the intersection and follow the signs “Campo de Golf”. The course is located 4 km from that point. Total distance from airport approx. 15 kms.

How to Find From Fuengirola: Take the exit to Coin on the new road A-7053. (aprox. 15 minutes).

Anoreta Golf was designed by the Ryder Cup Golf champion Jose Maria Canizares and was the first 18 hold golf course to be built to the east of Malaga city. A par 72 golf course it is 6,016 metres long for the professional player and 5,833 metres long for amateurs.

First opened in 1990 Anoreta is a challenging course for all levels of player ability.

Of varied design and agreeably surrounded by trees and water, which serves to compliment the natural beauty of the area. Some of the holes are spectacular. If you want to get rid of some old balls then keep them for the 3rd hole, you might loose a few here. If you get a par then it might be a good idea to frame the score card for posterity. When you play the 7th hole it would be advisable to avoid the cactus garden on the left, not the kind of hazard one might find at home. For the 14th it might be better if you pack some binoculars in your bag, it’s huge, and if you are really unlucky you might get wet.
