La Reserva Club praised in duo of highly regarded golf resort rankings

La Reserva Club has been rewarded for its continued investment into outstanding facilities by being named as one of the best golf resorts in continental Europe by two separate specialist review panels. Highlighting the recent improvements to La Reserva Club’s leisure and accommodation facilities, the Golf World judging panel installed the resort as a new entry to the listings at number 36, while National Club Golfer placed it at number 31 in their standings. Having been controversially omitted from the inaugural list two years ago due to a lack of on-site accommodation, La Reserva Club is the

second-highest new entry in the Golf World standings as reviewers stated: “La Reserva has that intangible ‘feelgood factor’ that makes you want to linger longer.” The panel at National Club Golfer, meanwhile, reviewed La Reserva and neighbouring Almenara together, commenting: “La Reserva and Almenara coming under the same ownership has created one of Europe’s finest golf facilities.” The facilities at La Reserva, which include an extensive range of sports facilities, beach club, restaurants and a lifestyle concierge service, were lauded further by the Golf World judging team, who noted: “The club’s new guest
villas are of an incredibly high quality and specification. Visitors also have access to the resort’s new Beach Club. “The restaurants are excellent, the service is great, and the practice facilities are among the best in this list.” The review in Golf World’s Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe pull-out features a stunning image of the 18th hole which highlights La Reserva’s rolling fairways, manicured tee boxes and stunning vistas of the clubhouse and surrounding Sotogrande countryside. Finca Cortesin Enjoys major rise in new European golf rankings
Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa’s decision to become the first course in Spain to relay its greens with a new variety of Bermuda grass has received a glowing endorsement after the exclusive resort moved into the top 10 of Golf World magazine’s updated rankings list of the ‘Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe’. The deluxe venue in Andalucia, Spain, was one of the biggest risers in the new benchmark industry poll of the continent’s best places to play and stay, climbing up nine places to eighth in the latest standings. Assessed over five different categories – golf courses, accommodation, practice facilities, accessibility and amenities – Finca Cortesin scored an impressive total of 88.7 points of out of 100, with the magazine’s judging panel singling out the resort’s recent investment in its golf facilities as the major factor for its new, improved position. As well as completing a comprehensive upgrade of all its greens last year, relaying them with a new, environmentally-friendly, type of Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass, the resort also undertook the total renovation and reconstruction of all its bunkers using the renowned ‘Better Billy Bunker’ system. Announcing its decision, the judging panel remarked: “Few other resorts in the list have implemented as many changes and improvements in the two years since our first resorts ranking was published. “During that time, the resort has built 32 luxury
villas …. while the club has also upgraded its greens with a new environmentally-friendly Bermuda grass and reconstructed every single one of its bunkers. These amendments have ensured the resort has stayed true to its designer Cabell Robinson’s vision of creating a golf course where “no hole has less than championship quality”. “But the Finca experience is more than just the golf. The distinctive, yet understated, Andalucian-style five-star hotel houses 67-highceilinged luxury suites, a spa, tennis courts, four swimming pools and several fine dining options. In 2015, the resort’s Japanese-themed restaurant Kabuki Raw was awarded a Michelin Star, and it has been renewed each year since.” The new accolade helps to cap a remarkable period of success for Finca Cortesin which has seen it add to its burgeoning reputation as one of the world’s top luxury golf resorts. Finca Cortesin Reveals long-term benefits of new eco-friendly greens
Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa is at the forefront of European golf’s drive to become more eco-sustainable after revealing that it is using up to 30 per cent less water since becoming the first course in Spain to feature a new, environmentally-friendly, variety of Bermuda grass on all its greens. The deluxe resort has experienced a number of wide-reaching benefits since installing a more eco-friendly, cost-effective and sustainable greens’ system. As part of the comprehensive upgrade on Finca Cortesin’s 18-hole championship course in July 2017 – which also featured the reconstruction of all bunkers using the renowned ‘Better Billy Bunker’ system – each putting surface was replaced with a new type of variety of Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass. As well as needing less irrigation, the greens require fewer pesticides and staff hours to maintain optimum condition all-year-round, with the new, improved, uniform putting surfaces earning widespread praise from both players and the golf industry alike – including Finca Cortesin winning the 2018 IAGTO Sustainability Award for Resource Efficiency. Ignacio Soto, head greenkeeper at Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa and who supervised the greens conversion programme, said: “The change to this new type of Bermuda grass has surpassed all our expectations and we
have received some great feedback from our members and guests who like firm and uniform greens. “The greens are already in better condition than they have been in previous years and we expect them to get even better in 2019.” Finca Cortesin began the programme to upgrade its greens in June 2016 at a nursery 600 kilometres away, with Soto and his team taking painstaking care and attention to seed the grass by hand. Having spent 12 months nurturing the new turf under supervised growing conditions, it was transported to the course where the resort’s greenkeeping staff began the meticulous process of relaying all 18 greens and the practice putting green. But, with the grass having been grown at the nursery, disruption for golfers was kept to a minimum with the course reopening barely a month after work began. Soto added: “We have experienced numerous advantages since upgrading our greens. The turf was obviously very young but, as we grew it ourselves, it was also, importantly, very clean of weeds which has had several knock-on effects. “Irrigation has been reduced as much as 30% on the greens’ surface. Apart from water consumption, hand watering in summer time has been reduced to a minimum so, as a result, we are able to save on a lot of labour.
“In general, we are using fewer pesticides. Domingo Gavira Managing Chaparral Golf Club, a successful project
After 12 years since the opening of the club, Domingo Gavira, Managing Director of Chaparral Golf Club, looks back on some of his experience at the helm of the club. As we chat on the Club House terrace Domingo tells us proudly about the many great moments that this club has given him; an enviable place to work, a golf club with the Mediterranean at your feet and yet surrounded by a lush pine forest. Over the years the club has overcome a difficult period and an international economic crisis. The Club had to work against the current for many years and Domingo believes that it´s in times of difficulties that the abilities and knowledge of a manager really show through. Domingo reflects on the recent improvements
and implementations that have been done in Chaparral, a rigorous investment plan that started more than a year ago in this popular golf club. “It all started with the restoration work in the Club House. First was the complete change of the restaurant regarding its management, staff and interior, presenting, after the reform, a new and fresh look, with improved menu, opening hours and service for dinners and events. The labor continued with the restoration of the Pro Shop, changing the interior design, layout of the exhibition area and the introduction of new brands and suppliers to respond to the golfers´ tendencies and tastes”. “After that, Chaparral expanded the club storage room and the latest addition is the recent inauguration of the new Academy. The Academy and golf school is a project that started early this year and that will bring a lot to the Club. At the beginning of May, Daniel Colomar and Ángel Ibañez, two golf teachers with a solid professional experience and clear ideas initiated the new management of the Academy with the main focus on the creation of a children’s school and the coaching to any type of player. Together with their new Pro´s, Chaparral will make the local golf more accessible and promote the junior golf among the children of Mijas and Fuengirola.” On the international market, the Academy has closed several agreements for 2018-2019 with different European PGAs, where groups with
Pro´s now can visit the club for training and golf during the winter season. Continuing with the plan of improvements, Chaparral´s manager tells us that the Club recently reached an agreement with PowaKaddy and introduced new, electric rental trolleys and that the complete buggy fleet will be replaced with new buggies of the brand Club Car. The improvements and implementations on the course began more than six months ago with new machinery and a new project that Domingo tells us about that is aimed to improve the player´s experience involving the playability, visibility and manicure of the course. The entire course has now been cleared and trimmed, always respecting the protected natural area but making it more accessible and playable for any type of player. The signs on the course have been replaced and during this year more improvements will be undertaken such as the construction of new tees and the reconstruction and remodelling of the bunkers. Domingo concludes, “Without the staff of Chaparral, their work and motivation to continuously improve the service and quality, this reality would have been impossible”. In 2018 a new clubhouse was built and the new golf course, Alcaidesa Heathland, that consists of 18 holes par 72, designed by the renowned former Ryder Cup player and author of numerous internationally renowned layouts, Dave Thomas. This course offers a variety of
natural scenery ranging from the plateau area (holes 1 to 5, 17 and 18) where the course is similar to a heathland, with wide fairways and outstanding views of the Mediterranean, to the valley area, where the holes meander along the valley and incorporate several water hazards.

The San Roque Club Formerly the summer residence of the Domecq sherry family, The San Roque Club sits on an enviable backdrop surrounded by lush hills & historic Cork Oak woods. Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner, it was used as a base for both teams. The course was founded in 2003 and since its inception has played host to a number of world renowned golfing tournaments including the European Nations Cup, the MENA Tour and the Copa del Rey de España. Valderrama Real Club Valderrama is located in Sotogrande, Andalucia, the largest and southern-most region of Spain. A few miles north of Gibraltar, it is approximately one hour’s drive from Malaga International Airport.Valderrama is a private Members’ club with a limited number of starting times offered for visitors. Valderrama has been consistently ranked as number 1 in Continental Europe since the late 80’s and has been included in the Top 100 in the World since 1999. The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 meters from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr, one of the great golf course
architects, and was originally known as Las Aves (Sotogrande New). In 1984, Mr. Jaime OrtizPatiño, acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never seen before in Europe. Robert Trent Jones willingly agreed to come back and redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike, and would bring out the best golf that is in him. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989. No championship course in modern times has so swiftly achieved such recognition. As early as 1988, Valderrama began to host the newly-launched Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour, and continued to do so until 2009. In 1997 the Club hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup, won by Europe in a most thrilling finish. Valderrama remains today the only club ever to have
hosted golf’s pinnacle event outside its traditional homelands, USA and Britain. The tone for the Ryder Cup event was set by Severiano Ballesteros, the Europe captain, when he walked the course with John Paramor, the chief tournament director. “I found everything perfect” he said. “It’s impossible to imagine a golf course in better condition” Next, in 1999 and 2000, Valderrama went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships - American Express Championship, which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama is home of the Andalucia Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments.

Dona Julia is a new 18 hole, par 71 layout designed by the famous designer Antonio Garcia Garrido. It is set within a huge new development by Casares in the West of the Costa del Sol.

The front nine is relatively new, opening in 2001, and was designed by Dave Thomas. The back nine is the original nine holes designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1982. The signature hole is the 18th which is played over the dramatic La Cañada gully. You will enjoy views to the Rio Guadiaro, Mediterranean and Valderrama. The course has excellent irrigation and drainage facilities, so is always in very good condition. This is a popular course with a large membership. The
variety of the holes, and dramatic views of the countryside make La Canada a delight to play. La Canada’s final three holes are a pure joy. The 16th travels dramatically downhill as it wends its way among a tapestry of trees until it reaches the green. The par-3 17th will doubtless cause havoc to many a player’s card. Although measuring just 135-metres this short hole provides the original “all duck or no dinner” tee shot. The 18th tee also provides a spectacle which is sure to cause a further tightening of the tummy muscles.

Known as Robert Trent Jones’ hidden treasure, La Duquesa is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges. The first nine holes are what some refer to as ‘English-style’, with narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views, is particularly beautiful - but it can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine are easier, with wide fairways, although the greens present additional difficulties, providing spectacular views over Duquesa Port, to the mountains and Gibraltar.
On the fifteenth the view even stretches as far as Marbella. Suites Duquesa Golf is the Resorts 5 Star hotel, overlooking the sea and the golf course. Created in 1968, Atalaya Old Course was designed by Bernard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Champion who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity. Its apparently benign parkland aspect with gently sloping fairways makes it an ideal course for the average club golfer - but plentiful bunkers filled with sparkling ‘marmolina’ sand, fast greens, lush vegetation and fairways lined with olive, pine, cactus and eucalyptus trees prove a challenge for single-figure players as well. Atalaya New Course offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and is seen as one of the most natural courses on
the coast. Created in 1990 by Paul Krings, the New Course is set further inland, but has a similar parkland feel about it - with gently undulating fairways and large, fast greens. Atalaya also offers splendid practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, six short game areas and three putting greens.

Los Naranjos is a typical Robert Trent Jones design with generous fairways and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The greens, with Penn A4-gras, are spacious and slightly undulated. The tees are long and have four markers: red, yellow, white and black with course lengths starting from 5.131 metres and reaching 6.532 metres at its longest.
Los Naranjos belongs to a select group of golf courses on the Costa del Sol, designed by world famous golf arquitect Robert Trent Jones and was built at a time when suitable land was still available. They quickley caught world fame with their championship layout and design, when the World Cup, Spanish Open and other important competitions were hosted.
Since the opening in 1977, Los Naranjos has been the host of several mayor competitions, including the Spanish Open, and is ranked one of the best golf courses in Spain. In 2005 and again in 2008 Los Naranjos was voted “Course of the year” on the Costa del Sol.
The 4th is one of the best Par 3’s on the coast, whilst the 9th is a challenging Par 4 dog-leg left. The signature hole however is the famous 18th. A long par 5, with several problems to handle - not least the lakes to be crossed - before reaching the clubhouse behind the green.

Las Brisas The Real Club of Golf Las Brisas was founded by D. Jose Banus in 1968 with the name of “Golf Club Nueva Andalucía”; He would be his first President until 1981.
For his design he chose the American Robert Trent Jones, considered already then like one of the best designers of the world of golf courses. He had just built the Sotogrande field, and later Las Brisas would also design Los Naranjos and Valderrama. The tour of this Marbella club presents multiple water obstacles: there are ten artificial lakes fed by two streams. The greens, mostly elevated, are heavily protected by bunkers. The result of the work of Robert Trent Jones, which we continue to enjoy today, was truly remarkable and original, achieving a difficult and attractive course. It was also original in the lawn used: “Bermuda” on the fairways and “Pencross Bentgrass” on greens, unusual species in Europe in the sixties; The consequence of all this is a course that requires playing a precision golf. As opinion of great golf players we can reflect the one of Paul Azinger (USA): “Las Brisas does not have a bad hole. In fact it’s one of the best courses I’ve ever played. ”
The original design, the Englishman Gerald Huggan was commissioned by D. José Banús to design the landscaping and the course’s arboretum. Gerald Huggan, a great specialist in subtropical plants, had just returned from Kenya where he had designed the Nairobi gardens. Here at Las Brisas we can enjoy his work and imagination, in a place where there are trees representing all the continents of the world: species from Africa like the Cape Chestnut and the Spiny Acacias; the Indian Laurel and the Mysore Ficus from Asia; Chorisia Speciosa from America; the Green Ash from Mexico; and the Blackwood and the Whistling Pine from Australia, together with numerous species of palms and Mediterranean trees which coexist in great harmony, turning our course into a veritable botanic garden. During the following ten years our Club was open to the public, serving the needs of tourism in the area and playing host to numerous

In 1981 the Banús Group sold the course to the businessmen Herman Sauer and Juan Romero who decided to transform the Club into a private Club; to do so, they formed the company Sociedad Campogolf, S.A., which holds the Clubs assets, and 1,320 shares were issued. The Club’s facilities and the golf course were improved. In 1983 the Spanish Open was again held at the Club, leading to a resounding sporting success. The Irishman, Eamon D’Arcy, won the Open with the Spaniard, Manuel Piñero, coming second. Both he and José María Cañizares managed to equal the course record. In 1983, and after a period of consolidation as a private Club, Herman Sauer resigned from the Chair, with elections being called at which D. Antonio Fortuny was voted in as Chairman. During the following years, especially in 1985 and 1991, our Club became the focus of some of the most prestigious national and international competitions like Their Majesties the King and Queens’ International Cup, the Spanish Open, the Nations’ Cup and the World Cup. The Spanish Open held in 1987 was won brilliantly by Nick Faldo, followed by Severiano Ballesteros,
only two strokes behind, with the latter beating the course record with 64 strokes in the ProAm played the day before the competition. Kyle Phillips renovated its design in 2015, through the remodelling of the course, this delightful walking venue has been redesigned to respect and improve on the best aspects of the original design, as well as modified to create a new course which will not only continue to bring pleasure to the members, but once again challenge the professional player. Upon the realization of the new practice facility improvements, Las Brisas will be able to offer its members a complete top-level golf experience.

Rio Real, perhaps one of the most attractive resorts in Spain, is located in an exceptional place at the entrance of Marbella. The golf course, which will be 50 in 2015, was designed by Javier Arana, who was considered the most brilliant Spanish designer of all time. This is visible in the maturity of its grove which encloses the carefully tended rounds making the whole scenery a delightful garden. The course sits on a slight incline to the sea, allowing many holes magnificent views to the Mediterranean Sea. It is not particularly tough despite the fact it crosses the river, from which the Club takes its name, on four occasions.
In addition, this Boutique Hotel, innovate and different, was inaugurated in 2001 and was decorated by the prestigious interior designer Pascua Ortega. The 30 rooms and suites were designed in a unique and traditional way. These rooms offer extraordinary views to the 11th hole of the golf course, situated only 3km away from Marbella. This club has a well-earned place amongst the most elite on the Costa del Sol, offering challenging golf in unparalleled surroundings. It affords views across the course to the Mediterranean, as well as inland to the mountains that lie to the north.
The opening hole is a fairly straightforward 289m par-4. The tee shot must clear a small lake and avoid the ravine to the left of the fairway. After that only a short iron should be needed to find the generous putting surface, guarded by three bunkers.
The splendid 19th century clubhouse epitomises the charm and character of the club. While not long, the course is full of interest and considered one of the best along the coast; each hole has its own particular character. Many of the tees are elevated and, on a fine day, the views from the 10th to the 16th holes are breathtaking.
The 11th is a spectacular left-handed dog leg, par-4, measuring just 286 meters. The elevated tee is at the highest point on the course, and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or bunker. The feature is a well-bunkered green with attractive waterfall. Take a moment to admire the sheer beauty of the setting from the ‘mirador’ behind the 11th green.

Cabopino Golf is situated on the border between Marbella and Mijas Costa, opposite the charming little marina of Cabopino. The course was designed by Juan Ligues Creus. The layout presents spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding pine forest. Cabopino Golf allows all categories of handicap golfers to enjoy a day out. At the entrance to Cabopino Golf we find the excellent facilities of the golf Academy and driving range. The driving range has a capacity for 60 players, with a depth of 250 mts, and 160 mts, wide distance markers, bunkers,
and the natural layout amongst the pine forest make an interesting and challenging practise session. The academy offers classes for individual ladies and gentlemen, groups of children, and corporative groups. Amongst the many spectacular holes, the par 4, third would be one to mention. Your tee box perched on the side of the cliff, presents you with a tee shot that has a drop of nearly 80m to the fairway, you then face an elevated green protected by a large bunker. Holes thirteen and fifteen are also attractive, with streams and lakes. The tenth tee provides a magnificent view of the back nine and the Mediterranean Sea.

Campo America is a 6,009 metre par 72 with five par fives. The topography is similar to Campo Asia but the wide fairways make this a slightly easier driving course. There are fewer fairway bunkers as well but the changes in elevation put a priority on correct club selection. The first three holes offer birdie opportunities to get the scoring going along nicely. After that, no two holes are alike requiring skilful shots
Signature Holes The testing index 2, sixth. A par-5 that requires accurate shot making to reach the narrow, elevated green. The spectacular, short 16th with its lake and fountain. From the tee you have a panoramic view of the resort.The downhill 18th, a fantastic par five. A par should be easily achieved on this hole but walking off with a birdie or even an eagle will provide a great talking point at the 19th Hole.

Campo Asia is not overly long at 5,925 metres but requires accuracy from all the tees. Drives that find the fairways will give the opportunity on most of the holes to attack the pins with the approach shots for potential birdies. Both the fairways and greens are well bunkered, and the majority of the tee shots, many of which are quite dramatic to comfortably wide landing areas, are either downhill or level. The four par fives are quite reachable in three without problems. Beware of the apparently concealed contours of the greens. Water is present on only two holes and approximately half of the approach shots are to elevated,
well-defended greens. The four short holes offer tremendous variety, and although some require a carry over thick rough, all are easily reachable. This is an exciting course which puts a premium on accuracy and distance control. Signature Holes The par-3, 11th: Offers panoramic 360 degree views of the resort to Mijas village and the Mediterranean. The par-5, 5th: The approach shot needs to be accurate as the green is protected by water left and heavy bunkering right. The par-5, 9th: A real risk and reward hole where longer hitters can carry the ravine to set up an iron to the green.

La Cala Golf Academy In addition to the sensational 54 holes of golf, La Cala also offers lessons and group classes for both beginners and experienced players, with multilingual professionals on hand to improve your game. La Cala Golf Academy is situated beside the six hole par 3 course and is overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It has a grass driving range as well as putting, chipping and bunker facilities.
The Third Course, Campo Europa, was opened in March 2005. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses. They are not severely contoured but are well bunkered and will be easier for the average golfer. The par 71 course measures 6014 metres.

Course designer Cabell Robinson stresses the difference between the three courses: “The three courses in La Cala Resort are all very different in character. The new course is the most different of the three because of the river Ojen – the others are in the hills. They are three good challenges and none is
over long. Yet they are all very different in character. It gives a great option to golfers to have three 18-hole courses to choose from.” Cabell went on to stress the advantages of the new course for the average golfer: “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.” The par-4 fourth twice crosses the river Ojen. Longer hitters can try to cross with the tee-shot but the safer play is to find the narrow fairway with a fairway metal or long iron. This leaves a long shot to the large, well-bunkered green.

With an original design by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s. With a total length of 6000 metres, it offers a wide variety of holes and is quite a challenging
course, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill. When you have finished your game you can enjoy excellent service and food in the bar-restaurant, either inside or outside on its terraces, surrounded by pine woods and beautiful views over the Mediterranean. The 8th is a tricky par 4 which requires a tactical approach. From an elevated tee a water hazard runs down the right hand side of the hole. An iron is the play here leaving a fairly short iron into the green. The par 3 tenth is probably the most picturesque hole. Tee off from an elevated position, with Mediterranean views, to a green approximately 30ft below.

Alhaurin Golf is a beautiful and entertaining Seve Ballesteros designed course composed of 5 par fives, 8 par fours and 5 par threes and is surrounded by Mediterranean forestry and magnificent views over the Costa del Sol.
The trees and plants within the course are typically Mediterranean with plenty of pine trees, Spanish oaks, cypress, orange trees, palms and olives plus a wide range of aromatic plants like thyme and rosemary.
Friendly staff, superb value for money, good quality course, complete with training area including an academy course, spacious natural grass driving range, putting green and chipping green. Continuous improvements have been made to Alhaurin Golf, making it a must for all golf and nature lovers. Signature Hole The signature hole is number six, a par five dogleg right with the most amazing tee positions and views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The drop in height from the tees is absolutely unique, and leaves most players with two more shots to reach the green, well protected by bunkers but not difficult to putt. This is one of those holes every golfer must play.

Golf Torrequebrada was host to the 53rd Spanish Open Championship in 1979. A unique feature is the variety of fairway design, which makes it important to choose the right club for each shot. An easy to walk course, although it is a long one, flat, a mixture of links, seawater lagoons and park land, suitable for all levels of golfers but when yet that sea wind blows offering a severe challenge to even the most experienced of golfers. Mostly open fairways, flat and quite easy to read greens, apart from the 9th, 12th and 15th. The course has been rather underrated of late but is now under new management and in recent years the greens and conditions have been vastly improved. Many visiting golfers like to play this course
on the last day of their golfing holiday as it is only a 5 minute drive from Malaga airport. The 9th is a tricky par-3, difficult to reach on windy days, with a subtly contoured putting surface. Once beyond the half-way hut (delicious tapas!), the par-5 12th is the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays between encroaching trees, the second leaves no room for error and the approach is to an elevated, stepped green protected to its front by a stream.

From Malaga airport. From Jerez Airport: Take the motorway to Cádiz. A few ml before you arrive in Cádiz, you will find a detour into the E15-A48 to Algeciras and San Fernando (E5-A4), follow the signs in this direction. In Chiclana, 2.7 kilometres from the La Barrosa beach and at an altitude of between 14 and 28 metres above sea level, lies the new golf course of Cadiz, La Estancia, extending over 82 hectares. From Jerez (approx 45 mins) From Jerez Airport follow the “Salida” signs and then pick up signs towards the A4/E5 motorway and Cadiz. At Junction 668 follow Chiclana and Algeciras onto the NIV road. Continue on the NIV as it turns into the N340 for approximately 39km following signs for Algeciras and Vejer de la Frontera. After you pass turnings for Vejer and Barbate continue on the N340 for approx 4km. Montenmedio is on the right.
It is surrounded by forests of wild olive, cork oak and pine trees and has impressive views of the Atlantic, the white villages such as Vejer de la Frontera, Benalup and Medina, and also of the African coast of Tangiers and Espartel. Playing its 18 holes is always fun and surprising: deer, rabbits, ducks and other animals accompany the player along his gentle round. The club house is designed in neoclassic Andalusia style with Asian influences and subtle furnishings and offers excellent golf services.
Signature Holes Spread over the softly rolling Dehesa hills and set amongst many century old trees, with sweeping, generous fairways flanked by a variety of flourishing, indigenous trees. The long, 550m 12th is a model par-5 hole, this very gently undulating terrain presents memorable golf-course scenery. Four par-5 holes are long and complicated by doglegs; most holes are par-4 and a few piquant par-3s complete what is overall a very interesting course.
