n febrero de 2011 salía el nº0 (piloto) de Golf Circus. Doce años después, celebramos nuestras 50 primeras portadas. Más de 10.000 páginas impresas en las que Golf Circus ha intentado hacer bandera del turismo en general y del de golf en particular.

En todo este tiempo han sido muchas las horas invertidas en ofrecer un producto que estuviera a la altura de la primera industria de España, el turismo. Porque sí, señores, por mucho que a algunos les pese, ya ha quedado más que demostrado que lo es, sobre todo porque nos ha sacado de más de un atolladero en las últimas crisis económicas. Además, España también se ha convertido en el primer país del mundo en turismo internacional de golf, porque, en el resto del mundo, el golf es solo deporte, en España también es turismo. El sector del golf en España es la confirmación de que la industria alrededor de los campos de golf tiene una enorme incidencia en la economía.

De la misma manera, también hemos intentado estar a la altura de los cientos de clientes que han confiado en Golf Circus y a los que aprovecho para dar las gracias, empresas grandes, pero también pequeñas, que nos han dejado que sirviéramos de canal para dar a conocer sus negocios.

En estos cincuenta primeros números, que suponen más de una década, he aprendido que tener la suerte de trabajar en lo que te gusta es un privilegio, que casi sin darme cuenta han pasado cincuenta números de mi propia vida, que mido el tiempo en ediciones y que me alegro infinitamente más de los cumpleaños de Golf Circus que de los míos, que ya no quiero ni contarlos.

Como en aquella película del 2004, 50 Primeras Citas, protagonizada por Drew Barrymore y Adam Sandler mi vida empieza con cada nueva edición, pero siempre con la ilusión de seguir aprendiendo y compartirlo a través de Golf Circus.

l Old Course de La Zagaleta será el centro del golf femenino junior cuando acoja el próximo 18 y 19 de septiembre la Ping Junior Solheim Cup. El prestigioso torneo, que servirá de antesala a la Solheim Cup 2023 en Finca Cortesín, enfrenta a las doce mejores jugadoras de menos de 18 años de Europa y Estados Unidos y en ella han jugado las estrellas del golf femenino mundial antes de graduarse en su competición hermana.

El recorrido, uno de los dos campos de los que consta La Zagaleta, se identifica con los grandes diseños de la época dorada del golf en Estados Unidos, con calles salpicadas de bunkers y obstáculos de agua, y, sobre todo, con unos greenes rápidos y ondulados. Todo ello exigirá un buen juego técnico a las juniors, que tendrán que combinar estrategia y precisión para defender a sus respectivos equipos.

Hablamos con Ignacio Castro, greenkeeper y con Tatiana Morató, directora de operaciones de golf de Zagaleta New Course sobre el torneo y lo que supone para La Zagaleta la celebración de la Ping Junior Solheim Cup, como muestra de apoyo al golf femenino amateur.

he Old Course at La Zagaleta will be at the heart of junior women’s golf when it hosts the PING Junior Solheim Cup on 18 and 19 September.

This prestigious tournament, which will serve as prelude to the Solheim Cup 2023 at Finca Cortesin, pits the top twelve under-18 players from Europe and the United States against each other. It is the event to watch the young stars of world women’s golf play in before they graduate to its sister competition.

Zagaleta Old Course acogerá la PING Junior Solheim Cup el 18 y 19 de septiembre de este año. ¿Cómo se prepara el campo para un torneo de tal magnitud?

Nuestros campos siempre están en condiciones óptimas para poder acoger cualquier torneo a nivel internacional.

Para esta ocasión, hemos tenido reuniones con el equipo agronómico de la Solheim en las que la única recomendación ha sido mantener este nivel de mantenimiento que, con el problema de calidad de agua, supondrá un gran reto. Por lo demás, lo habitual de un torneo de este nivel, reservar los tees de salida, posiciones de banderas y cuidar al máximo el detalle, que es lo que nos diferencia para poder acoger un evento de esta categoría.

The course, one of two at La Zagaleta, is in the style of the great designs of the golden age of American golf, with fairways laced with bunkers and water hazards, and, above all, with fast and undulating greens. All this will need a good technical game from the juniors, who will have to combine strategy and precision to defend their respective teams.

Este Club es uno de los más exclusivos de Europa en el que el campo está preparado al máximo nivel. Mi experiencia como head greenkeeper en dos torneos del Ladies European Tour me ayuda a organizar el evento cuidando todos los detalles.

We spoke with Ignacio Castro, greenkeeper, and Tatiana Morató, golf operations manager at the Zagaleta New Course, about La Zagaleta’s support for women’s amateur golf and hosting the PING Junior Solheim Cup.

¿Qué trabajos se realizan una vez terminado el torneo?

Tras el estrés que sufre el campo después de un torneo de este nivel, lo primero que realizamos es una oxigenación y renovación del suelo y de la planta de todas las partes del campo. Este proceso conlleva pinchados, aporte de arena y complementos nutricionales para volver al máximo nivel lo antes posible.

Hay sectores de la sociedad muy críticos con los campos de golf en referencia a la gestión medioambiental y de los recursos hídricos. En este sentido, ¿qué gestión se hace en La Zagaleta?

Tenemos un plan medioambiental

agronómico en el que se trabaja evitando el uso de fungicidas, nutriendo la planta para que su sistema inmunológico esté preparado ante los ataques de las enfermedades, todo ello con productos orgánicos de agricultura ecológica.

Disponemos del sistema de riego más avanzado del mercado y estamos disminuyendo las zonas del campo a regar. Además, contamos con un sistema de reciclaje del agua para la limpieza diaria de maquinaria con el que ahorramos el 85% del agua y, por supuesto, utilizamos agua regenerada proveniente de la depuradora de Cancelada.

Zagaleta Old Course will host the PING Junior Solheim Cup on 18-19 September this year. How do you go about preparing the course for such an important tournament?

Our courses are always in optimal condition and able to host any international tournament. On this occasion, we have had meetings with the Solheim’s team of agronomists and their only recommendation has been to keep up this level of maintenance which, with the water quality problem, will be a great challenge. As for other aspects, the usual for a tournament of this level; reserving the tees, flag positions and being on top of all the details, which is what sets us apart and means we can host an event of this calibre.

This club is one of the most exclusive in Europe, one where the course is prepared to the highest standard. My experience as head greenkeeper in two Ladies European Tour tournaments helps me organise the event and cover all the details.

What work will need to be done once the tournament is over?

during a tournament of this level, the first thing we do is aerate and refresh the soil and the grass on all areas of the course.

This process involves spiking, sanding and adding feed to return it to the highest standard as soon as possible.

Some parts of society are pretty critical of golf courses in terms of

their environmental impact and management of water resources. How does La Zagaleta manage these things?

We have an agronomic plan to protect the environment where we work on avoiding the use of fungicides, feeding each plant so its immune system can resist disease; all with organic products from ecological farming.

We have the most advanced irrigation system on the market and we are cutting down on the areas of the course that we have to water. We also have a water recycling system for the daily washing of machinery which saves 85% of water and, of course, we use regenerated water from the local treatment plant at Cancelada.

Zagaleta Old Course will host the best junior amateur players from the two major circuits fighting for the trophy.

How did the members come to take the decision to be host venue?

Ever since the new management took over running the club almost seven years ago, the opportunity to host a major tournament with global reach has been considered. Unfortunately, we do not have the level of infrastructure needed to organise a tournament the size of the Solheim Cup with all the logistics setup involved. However, because of its characteristics, the junior version is a tournament that has always caught the attention of the members. The chance to support women’s and junior amateur golf is really satisfying for us all.

Zagaleta Old Course recibirá a las mejores jugadoras junior amateurs de los dos grandes circuitos luchando por el trofeo. ¿Cómo se tomó la decisión por parte de los socios?

Desde que la nueva dirección se hizo cargo de la gestión del club, hace ya casi siete años, se ha explorado la posibilidad de albergar algún torneo importante con impacto global. Desafortunadamente, no tenemos las infraestructuras necesarias para poder organizar un torneo del tamaño de La Solheim Cup por las necesidades logísticas que conlleva. Sin embargo, la versión junior, es un torneo que, por sus características, los socios siempre vieron con muy buenos ojos.

El hecho de apoyar el golf femenino y junior amateur nos produce una enorme satisfacción.

Una de las misiones de la Solheim Cup es servir de inspiración a las jóvenes generaciones de jugadoras y en septiembre, La Zagaleta será el centro del golf amateur. ¿Qué supone organizar un torneo de estas características?

Estamos muy ilusionados de poder albergar un torneo tan entrañable como la Ping Junior Solheim Cup. Al fin y al cabo, son jugadoras muy jóvenes, menores de 18 años, que trabajan muy duro desde niñas para cumplir

su gran sueño. Las mejores jugadoras profesionales del mundo han participado en la Ping Junior Solheim Cup durante su época amateur, por lo que esta competición sería como el prólogo al circuito profesional.

Todo el equipo de Zagaleta New & Old Course, está volcado con la organización del evento, inmersos en la preparación del campo de cara a ofrecer su mejor versión y hacer sentir a las jugadoras como en casa, o incluso mejor.

En 2021, Zagaleta New Course abrió su campo al cliente externo con una serie de limitaciones horarias. ¿Qué balance se puede hacer de esta decisión?

Se trata de una apertura esperada por muchos clientes y agencias especializadas en el sector del golf.

Teníamos un volumen considerable de jugadores con ganas de poder cruzar esa barrera de entrada y contemplar lo que hay dentro de La Zagaleta. Estamos muy satisfechos con la acogida que ha tenido entre nuestros clientes. Dada nuestra exigencia en el servicio al cliente, estamos recibiendo valoraciones muy favorables que, en definitiva, era nuestro objetivo. La paz que se respira en los hoyos de Zagaleta New Course es sencillamente algo único.

One of the missions of the Solheim Cup is to inspire the younger generation of players and, in September, La Zagaleta will become the focus of amateur golf. What does it mean to organise a tournament such as this?

We are really excited to host such a delightful tournament as the PING Junior Solheim Cup. At the end of the day, these are very young players, under the age of 18, who have been working really hard since they were children to fulfil their dream. The best professional players in the world have taken part in the PING Junior Solheim Cup during their amateur careers, so this competition is like a prelude to the professional circuit.

The whole Zagaleta team, both the New and Old Course, is involved in organising the event, with our heads down getting the course ready to look its best and make the players feel more than at home.

In 2021, Zagaleta New Course opened up to outside players at certain times of day. How has that decision played out?

That was a long-awaited opening for many players and specialist golf agencies.

We had a considerable volume of players wanting to cross that entrance barrier and see what was inside La Zagaleta.

Propiedad de la familia Parra, una de las más notables empresas familiares de Marbella, el nuevo Óbal Urban Hotel se proyectó conscientes de que la planta hotelera en Marbella estaba acometiendo importantes reformas y no podían quedarse atrás. Hablamos con Cristóbal Parra Yagüe, director de operaciones del hotel y miembro de tercera generación del grupo, de cómo se gestó el proyecto y de lo que supondrá para el turismo tener un hotel categoría 4 estrellas en pleno centro de la ciudad.

El hotel San Cristóbal es uno de los iconos hoteleros de Marbella desde que se fundara en los años 60 y ha estado gestionado por su familia desde entonces. Cuéntenos un poco de los orígenes del hotel.

El hotel ha tenido varias reformas a lo largo de su historia. El primer Hotel San Cristóbal lo construyó mi abuelo Cristóbal Parra Sánchez y se inauguró en agosto del año 1961 con 4 plantas y 58 habitaciones, en 1970 se añadieron 2 plantas y 44 habitaciones más. En el año 1987 se proyecta el primer restaurante para lo que se eliminan algunas habitaciones.

Como decía, con el paso de los años se han ido haciendo mejoras hasta llegar al momento actual en el que estamos acometiendo una reforma integral que nos dará la categoría de 4 estrellas.

El nombre del nuevo hotel elegido es Óbal Urban Hotel. ¿Qué significa?

Estuvimos dándole bastantes vueltas al nuevo nombre, pero no había ninguno que gustase a las cuatro ramas familiares. Al final llegamos a la conclusión que no queríamos perder nuestras raíces, Óbal viene por un lado de Cristóbal (el fundador) y por otra de la uva. Mi abuelo antes de empezar en la hostelería se dedicaba a

la agricultura y comerciaba con la uva, también el apellido Parra es el árbol de la uva, así que todo tiene sentido.

Con Urban queremos darle ese toque urbano y ofrecer al cliente experiencias inolvidables en la Marbella real, en el casco histórico.

Una inversión de seis millones de euros no es algo que pueda tomarse a la ligera. ¿Por qué se decide en este momento acometer el proyecto? Éramos conscientes que el hotel necesitaba una renovación integral, la planta hotelera en Marbella estaba acometiendo importantes reformas y no podíamos quedarnos atrás. En años anteriores ya habíamos reformado más de la mitad de las habitaciones, pero si queríamos aspirar a ser un hotel de 4 estrellas teníamos que hacer muchas más cosas.

Antes de acometer la reforma actual contratamos los servicios de una consultora para conocer cómo estaba el mercado de los hoteles 4 estrellas en la provincia de Málaga. Los números claramente decían que había que dar ese salto de calidad.

Marbella es una ciudad que vive de cara al mar y Óbal Urban Hotel estará en pleno centro de la ciudad y a escasos metros de la playa y del paseo marítimo. ¿Cómo será el nuevo edificio?

El edificio tendrá un aspecto moderno y que va a llamar la atención con una fachada cuyo diseño estará a la altura de lo que significa Marbella. El interior tendrá nuevas zonas comunes como un Rooftop, un gimnasio, salas polivalentes para eventos y reuniones y una nueva recepción en planta baja que hará olvidar la legendaria escalera mecánica del antiguo edificio. Óbal Urban Hotel apostará por el turismo urbano y gastronómico y

Óbal Urban Hotel reabrirá en verano de 2023 en lo que ha sido durante más de 60 años uno de los iconos hoteleros de Marbella, el hotel San Cristóbal. Tras una renovación de 6 millones de euros, el nuevo hotel se alzará en la arteria principal de la ciudad, a pocos metros del mar y del casco histórico. La gran novedad será su RoofTop, 360 Blue Sky Bar, que contará con piscina y chill-out con una carta con propuestas saludables y coctelería.

Usted ha cogido el testigo de su padre Cristóbal Parra como director de operaciones de Óbal Urban Hotel, que pertenece al grupo de empresas de su familia y del que es usted la tercera generación. ¿Cuáles son los valores estratégicos del grupo como empresa familiar?

Efectivamente, soy la tercera generación que, con el respaldo de un director general, es la que está llevando el peso de la estrategia del grupo. Hace poco más de un año firmamos el segundo protocolo familiar para que sigamos muchos años más en armonía.

aspira a convertirse nuevamente en referencia hotelera en Marbella. En este sentido, ¿qué van a encontrar los viajeros que se alojen en el nuevo hotel?

A parte del ya conocido Restaurante Alameda, aumentaremos la oferta gastronómica con el Rooftop que tendrá vistas al casco histórico y la ampliación del patio interior anexo al restaurante.

De las 110 habitaciones que tendremos, 45 serán Premium, 4 Junior Suites y una Suite, todas ellas con vistas al Parque de la Alameda o casco antiguo.

Jugar al golf es una de las principales razones por las que la gente viaja alrededor del mundo y Marbella es una ciudad con muchos y buenos campos. ¿Tendrá el hotel servicios para los huéspedes que se alojen para jugar? ¿Y acuerdos con los campos de golf de la zona?

Si, tendremos acuerdos con campos de golf para los clientes que lo soliciten.

También podrán guardar las bolsas con los palos en lugares seguros si lo necesitaran. El servicio de masaje estará a disposición de los huéspedes para después de un largo día de golf.

Solvento Group ha apostado por otras tipologías de alojamiento además de la puramente hotelera como son los apartamentos turísticos Aqua Bellamar y Aqua Marbella. ¿Cuál es el perfil del cliente que se aloja? ¿Qué ofrecen este tipo de alojamientos?

El perfil de los apartamentos suelen ser familias con niños y grupos de amigos en temporada alta y parejas y empresarios en temporada baja. Ofrecen cualquiera de los servicios que tiene uno en su casa, cocina totalmente equipada, salón con un cómodo sofá, mesa para comer y una buena televisión, entre otras cosas.

Además, todo el complejo de Aqua Bellamar cuenta con terrazas con vistas al mar y en el caso de Aqua Vento, terrazas con vistas al mar y a la montaña.

El grupo está constantemente a la búsqueda y evaluación de nuevos proyectos. ¿Alguno que pueda desvelar?

Hace poco compramos un edificio de 10 apartamentos en el centro de Málaga que estamos operando bajo el nombre de Aqua Apartments Málaga. Recientemente se llevó a cabo la firma de una opción de compra de otros 50 apartamentos, también en el centro de Málaga, que están a la espera de obtener la licencia de uso turístico y que esperamos que forme parte de Aqua Apartments Group en 2024.

El edificio tendrá un aspecto moderno y que va a llamar la atención con una fachada cuyo diseño estará a la altura de lo que significa Marbella.

CRISTÓBAL PARRA YAGÜE, Óbal Urban Hotel will open its doors for summer 2023 within what has been one of Marbella’s most iconic hotel buildings for over 60 years, the Hotel San Cristóbal.

After a six-million-euro overall, this new-look hotel will take pride of place on the town’s main thoroughfare, just a stone’s throw from the sea and the Old Town.

The biggest innovation will be the rooftop 360 Blue Sky Bar, with its swimming pool and chillout area serving a menu of healthy food and cocktails.

Owned by the Parra family, one of Marbella’s most prominent family businesses, the new Óbal Urban Hotel has been created in response to the major upgrading under way in the Marbella hotel sector, so as not to be left behind. We spoke with Cristóbal Parra Yagüe, the hotel’s director of operations and a member of the third generation of this family group, about how the project came about and the significance for Marbella tourism of having a four-star hotel right in the heart of town.

You have taken over the reins from your father Cristóbal Parra as operations director of Óbal Urban Hotel. This belongs to your family group of companies and you are the third generation. What are the core values of the group as a family business?

That’s right, I am the third generation and, with the support of the general manager, we are taking forward the group’s strategy. Just over a year ago we signed our second family working agreement so that we can continue together harmoniously for many years to come.

The San Cristóbal has been one of Marbella’s iconic hotels since it was founded in the 1960s and has been run by your family throughout that time.

Tell us a little about the origins of the hotel.

The hotel has had several alterations over the years. The first Hotel San Cristóbal was built by my grandfather Cristóbal Parra Sánchez and opened in August 1961 with four floors and 58 rooms. In 1970, two more floors and 44 rooms were put in. In 1987 the first restaurant was added, replacing some of the rooms.

As you can see, we’ve been continually

improving as time has gone on, right up to the present day with the complete refurbishment that’s currently under way to bring us up to four-stars.

The new name is Óbal Urban Hotel.

Where does it come from?

We thought a lot about the new name, but initially there wasn’t one that the four branches of the family all liked.

Eventually we realised that we didn’t want to lose our roots. Óbal comes on the one hand from Cristóbal (the founder) and on the other from the oval shape of grapes. Before he started in the hotel business, my grandfather was in farming and sold grapes, and the surname Parra is also the Spanish word for a grapevine, so it all comes together and makes sense.

With Urban we want to give the hotel that urban touch and offer the customer unforgettable experiences in the real Marbella, in the Old Town.

An investment of six million euros is not something to be taken lightly. Why did you decide this was the right time to go ahead with the plan?

We were aware that the hotel needed a complete renovation; the hotel industry in Marbella was undergoing major renewal and we could not fall behind. In previous years we had refurbished more

than half of the rooms, but if we wanted to aspire to being a four-star hotel, we had to do much more.

Before going ahead with the current overhaul we hired consultants to find out what the market for four-star hotels in Malaga province was. The numbers clearly showed that we had to make that leap forward in quality terms.

Marbella is a seaside town and Óbal Urban Hotel will be right in the centre, just a few metres from the beach and promenade. What will the new-look building be like?

The building will have a modern and eye-catching look with a façade designed to be in keeping with all that Marbella stands for. Inside there will be new public areas such as a rooftop pool and terrace, a gym, multi-purpose rooms for events and meetings as well as a new ground-floor reception, making the legendary escalator of the old building a thing of the past. Óbal Urban Hotel will be focused on urban and gastro tourism and aims to become a benchmark among Marbella hotels. What will visitors staying in the new hotel find in that regard?

As well as the Alameda Restaurant, which is already well known, we will increase

the food and drink options available with both the new rooftop terrace, which will have views over the Old Town, and an extension to the interior patio next to the restaurant. Out of the 110 rooms we are going to have, 45 will be Premium, four Junior Suites and one will be a Suite, all of them with views of the Alameda gardens or the Old Town.

The family firm, Solvento Group, has also invested in other types of accommodation beyond the pure hotel concept, such as Aqua Bellamar and Aqua Vento holiday apartments in Marbella. What is the profile of customers who stay there? What do these accommodation types offer?

One of the main reasons people travel worldwide is to play golf and Marbella is a town with many good courses. Will the hotel have services for guests who are staying for golf? And deals with golf courses in the area?

Yes, we will have agreements with golf courses for guests who request them.

They will also be able to store club bags safely as required. The massage service will be available to guests after a long day on the course.

1964 1996 En 1960, cuando Bélgica permitió que la República del Congo se convirtiera en un país independiente, muchas familias belgas tuvieron que huir, una de ellas era la familia Mols que recaló en el Sur de España. En 1968, Bruno Mols y Fernando Gillis, su socio, adquirieron 200 hectáreas en el Valle del Paraíso, el terreno donde más tarde se construiría el campo de golf de El Paraíso.

A mediados de los años 80 se materializa la venta del campo a los empresarios Alan James y Jorgan Mostrup, que asumieron los cargos de presidente y vicepresidente, respectivamente. Bena Golf, la empresa de Alan James, comenzó a organizar competiciones en El Paraíso, junto con otros operadores turísticos de golf, lo que definitivamente ayudó a construir la reputación del club.

In 1960, when Belgium allowed the Republic of Congo to become an independent country, many Belgian families had to flee, one of them being the Mols family, who settled in southern Spain. Perhaps the most significant part of the history of El Paraiso Golf Club was the members’ buyout. Hugh Maloney managed to convince Wimpey’s directors that the members could finance the purchase. So the committee, with more than the required 50% approval, moved forward with the purchase.

In 1984, the course was sold to businessmen Alan James and Jorgan Mostrup, who became president and vice-chairman respectively. Alan James’ company, Bena Golf, began to organise competitions at El Paraiso, along with other golf tour operators, which really helped to boost the club’s reputation.

In the mid 80’s, construction firm Wimpey became interested in investing in the area as a marketing vehicle for

Actualmente la masa social del club está formada por más de 23 nacionalidades y se ha convertido en un club internacional con un gran calendario de eventos.

A lo largo de estos 50 años, y posiblemente con mayor prevalencia desde que los socios compraron el club, la historia de El Paraíso está ligada a las historias de sus miembros. Ejemplo de esto es la colecta de las damas para reformar sus vestuarios, la donación del puente entre los hoyos 12 y 18 “in memoriam”, o para la compra de árboles para el campo. También se han donado elementos para el comedor, y antiguas cabezas de palo que datan del siglo XIX o varios bancos del campo adquiridos por los socios, a menudo en memoria de sus seres queridos fallecidos.

Pero quizá lo más valioso que los socios aportan al club es su tiempo. Desde la junta directiva hasta el comité del club, pasando por los numerosos comités necesarios para las actividades sociales, los hándicaps y la organización de otros eventos. Gran parte de este tiempo pasa desapercibido, pero es el pilar del club y de su espíritu.

From the outset, El Paraiso Golf Club was a magnet for British and Irish golfers coming to the Costa del Sol. By 1993 the club had over 400 members and, apart from golf, offered a very active social life.

Today the club’s membership is made up of more than 23 nationalities and it has become an international club with an extensive calendar of events.

Throughout these 50 years, and possibly more so since the members bought the club, the history of El Paraiso has been linked to the stories of its members.

Examples of these include the ladies’ collection to refurbish their changing rooms and the donation ‘in memoriam’

of the bridge between the 12th and 18th holes or for the purchase of trees for the course. There have also been donations of items for the dining room and old club heads dating from the 19th century and several course benches purchased by members, often in memory of deceased loved ones.

But perhaps the most valuable thing that members give to the club is their time.

From the board to the club committee, to the many committees required for social activities, handicaps and the organisation of other events. A lot of it is unseen but it is the mainstay of the club and its ethos.

El torneo tenía una bolsa de premios de 3 millones de pesetas y participaron 156 jugadores nacionales e internacionales.

La competición la ganó Peter Oosterhuis, antiguo campeón amateur británico que se convirtió en un exitoso golfista profesional y miembro del equipo de la Ryder Cup. Acudieron entre los españoles nombres como Piñero, Gallardo, Barrios y un jovencísimo Seve Ballesteros a la edad de 16 años y entre los internacionales Townsend, Barnes, Jacklin, Coles o De Vicenzo.

It was a real coup for the first owners of El Paraiso when the European Tour chose to come to the course in 1974 for an inaugural tournament of the PGA Tour. The tournament had a prize purse of three million pesetas and 156 national and international players took part. The competition was won by Peter Oosterhuis, a former British amateur champion who became a successful professional golfer and member of the Ryder Cup team.

Among the Spanish players were names such as Piñero, Gallardo, Barrios and a very young Seve Ballesteros at the age of 16, and among the international players, Townsend, Barnes, Jacklin, Coles and De Vicenzo.

EL CAMPO THE COURSE

2010/2018 El campo comenzó su andadura con sólo 7 hoyos, el primero de los cuales se encontraba en el actual hoyo 4.

Pronto se convirtió en 9 hoyos a finales de 1973 y finalmente en 18 hoyos.

En estos 50 años el campo se ha ido actualizando, sobre todo en los últimos años en los objetivos de ahorro de agua y sostenibilidad, para lo que ha acometido reformas e inversiones en instalaciones y maquinaria.

Entre 2014 y 2019 se trabajó mucho para aumentar el atractivo visual del campo, en particular en la construcción de nuevos tees y puentes. Se recaudaron 27.000 euros de donaciones privadas de socios para poder reconstruir los puentes de los hoyos 9, 12 y 18 en piedra de Casares.

También se utilizó piedra de Casares para construir muros y parterres que realzan la entrada al campo de prácticas.

En 2015, el aspecto del campo mejoró aún más con la plantación de un par de árboles raros cuyo nombre en latín es Tetraclinis Articulata, y que ahora son una especie protegida.

En ese momento la mayor prioridad era la sustitución de los greens, que para entonces tenían más de cuarenta años.

El primero fue una simple sustitución del existente, a este le siguieron el 2º y el 12º. En esta etapa, la junta decidió que sería deseable tener coherencia en el rediseño de los greens restantes, y se hizo un acercamiento a la empresa Gary Player Design (GPD). Su vicepresidente Steven MacFarlane, arquitecto escocés, aceptó preparar los diseños y supervisar la construcción de los quince greens restantes, y también de muchos de los

The course started out with only seven holes, the first of which was on the current 4th hole. It soon became nine holes at the end of 1973 and finally 18 holes. In those 50 years the course has been updated, especially in recent years as part of meeting the goals of saving water and sustainability, for which the club has undertaken reforms and investment in facilities and machinery.

Some minor changes were also made to the design and aesthetics of the course.

Although funds were not available for major works, the greens’ chairman encouraged members to make private donations for trees, plants and bridges and, between 2010 and 2018, 334 new trees and large shrubs were planted.

Between 2014 and 2019, a lot of work was done to increase the visual appeal of the course, particularly with the laying out of new tees and more bridges.

Casares stone was also used to build walls and flowerbeds to enhance the entrance to the driving range. In 2015, the appearance of the course was further improved by the planting of a pair of rare trees whose Latin name is Tetraclinis Articulata, and which are now a protected species.

At that time the main priority was the replacement of the greens, which were by then more than forty years old. The first was a simple replacement of the existing one, followed by the 2nd and 12th. At that stage, the board decided that it would be desirable to have consistency in the redesign of the remaining greens, and an approach was made to Gary Player Design (GPD). Its vice-president Steven MacFarlane, a Scottish architect, agreed to prepare the designs and oversee the construction of the remaining fifteen greens, and also many of the course bunkers. These drawings were received in February 2014 and, since then, the board has worked with GPD to improve the overall character, functionality and playability of the course.

El campo en la actualidad The course today

El campo de prácticas también recibió atención. Se consiguió una superficie artificial mejorada para la zona de prácticas a la sombra y se identificó una zona de césped exclusiva para socios.

Surtec elaboró un informe técnico exhaustivo en el que se destacaba lo que se necesitaba para llevar el campo a un nivel superior sostenible. Se identificaron áreas de mejora y se cuantificaron procedimientos, gastos, niveles de personal y tiempos de cierre. Además, en ese momento se realizó una importante inversión en maquinaria y tecnología.

Tras este informe, se acordó crear zonas “naturalizadas” para reducir el mantenimiento y mejorar el aspecto, se erradicó la contaminación por hierba Kikuyu de las calles, tees y rough y se llevó a cabo un examen exhaustivo de los greens y los collares para medir la consistencia del rendimiento. Como resultado, se renovaron todos los collares en 2020 y se iniciaron los trabajos para establecer un cuello interior para evitar la contaminación de los greens.

Los trabajos generales en el campo continuaron durante 2021 y 2022 con mejoras en los caminos, los alrededores de los tees y el drenaje.

All new greens were built to USGA specifications, as was the new enlarged putting green in front of the clubhouse and the new short-game practice area and green next to the 10th tee.

The practice ground also received attention. An improved artificial surface was provided for the shaded practice area and a members-only grass area was identified.

Surtec produced a comprehensive technical report highlighting what was needed to take the course to a sustainable next level. Areas for improvement were identified and procedures, costs, staffing levels and closure times were quantified.

In addition, a major investment in machinery and technology was made at the time.

Following this report, it was agreed to create ‘naturalised’ areas to reduce maintenance and improve appearance, kikuyu grass contamination was eradicated from fairways, tees and rough and a comprehensive review of greens and collars was carried out to measure consistency of performance.

As a result, all collars were renewed in 2020 and work began to fix an inner collar to prevent contamination of the greens. General work on the course continued through 2021 and 2022 with improvements to the paths, tee surrounds and drainage.

A lot has changed since Michael Meeus took over the licence to run The Range International Academy in February 2022. The school has undergone a complete makeover of its facilities and the services on offer, becoming a focal point for both beginners and those perfecting their game alike.

The Range is ideally situated, in the famous golf valley, two kilometres from Puerto Banús and ten minutes from Marbella, where some of the best courses on the Costa del Sol are to be found. The school even offers the opportunity to practice from 8:00 to 21:00 with artificial light if needed.

Además, la escuela cuenta con una zona wifi y un nuevo parking con capacidad para 60 coches con la posibilidad de poder limpiar el vehículo mientras se practica.

También cuenta con un estudio de análisis de swing donde perfeccionar el juego con diferentes tecnologías y posibilidad de asesoramiento de fitting para encontrar el equipamiento ideal.

Otro de los proyectos a corto plazo es una zona de pitch & putt.

Los jugadores de categoría junior tienen un papel muy especial en la Escuela Internacional The Range, gracias al acuerdo firmado entre el Ayuntamiento de Marbella y la Federación Andaluza de Golf, que permite a las categorías inferiores de los equipos de la Federación el uso gratuito de las instalaciones.

The Range International Academy, under the guidance of manager Michael Meeus, undertook a major investment, refurbishing the facilities to become a future centre of excellence for improving technical play. To reach this goal, the entire tee line has been replaced along with the individual mats of the 40 fully covered positions and work has started on a new shortgame area and an artificial putting green. Moreover, an innovative system of night lighting has been installed that illuminates the entire area including the practice fairway. The school also has a wi-fi zone and new car park with space for 60 cars, where a customer can also have their vehicle cleaned while practicing.

It has a swing analysis studio as well, where a player can perfect their game using different technology and pick up some fitting advice to find the ideal clubs. Another short-term project is a pitch and putt area.

Junior golfers are a very important part of The Range International Academy thanks to the agreement signed between Marbella town hall and the Andalusian Golf Federation.

This allows the junior categories of the Federation’s teams to use the facilities free of charge.

In The Green, its on-site restaurant open from 8:30 to 17:00, it is always a good time to try something from the menu, which includes high-quality meat and fish dishes and lighter options, such as salads, sandwiches and burgers. For customers with a tight agenda, the chance to order food directly from the practice area is a real plus point.

The centre offers physiotherapy, chiropractic, fitness and massage services to avoid and treat sports and other injuries. The professional team at the CostaSpine clinic are specialised in chiropractic manipulation for sports performance, sports massages and physiotherapy. Each patient receives personalised treatment and assessment, as no two people are ever the same.

Advice on equipment is also all part of the service at The Range Marbella. Hasta ahora, británicos e irlandeses han acaparado más de la mitad de las entradas, el 53%, y otras nacionalidades de la Unión Europea el 18%. Otro dato que está rompiendo todas las barreras es la venta de entradas entre los aficionados de Estados Unidos. Mientras que en ediciones anteriores apenas se llegó al 2% del total vendido al público estadounidense, a día de hoy la estadística se ha triplicado y llega al 6%. ¿Qué va a suponer la Solheim 2023 para la Costa del Sol? ¿Cree que marcará un antes y un después para el sector turístico?

Estoy convencido de que, tanto para el segmento del golf como para el sector turístico en general, que Finca Cortesín albergue un torneo de estas características sólo traerá beneficios a la Costa del Sol. Podemos estar muy satisfechos con los datos que tenemos hasta ahora, que como he mencionado anteriormente, han pulverizado cualquier tipo de previsión. Tras el análisis de todas estas cifras, la conclusión que se puede extraer es que la apuesta que hicieron hace ya cuatro años las instituciones andaluzas, con la Junta de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol, Acosol y los ayuntamientos de Marbella y Benahavís a la cabeza, para conseguir traer la Solheim Cup a España, fue más que acertada. Y, además, llega en un momento dulce, pues en 2022 se mejoraron las previsiones que manejábamos en buena parte de los indicadores turísticos, y en algunos con las mejores cifras de la historia.

Absolutamente. Ya no solo por el impacto mediático, que hasta ahora ya ha superado los 120 millones de euros gracias a la promoción que se ha hecho desde que se anunciara el evento, sino porque a nueve meses de que comience se han pulverizado todas las previsiones con más de 45.000 entradas vendidas y los pases para el Solheim Pavilion agotados.

Así mismo, poder organizar un evento de estas características y que se conozca aún más el destino, las infraestructuras con las que cuenta y la oferta turística paralela al golf fuera de nuestras fronteras, supone una oportunidad única para la provincia de Málaga.

El golf es una de las razones por las que la gente viaja alrededor del mundo y la Costa del Sol tiene muchos y buenos campos. ¿Espera usted que el atractivo turístico de la zona suponga un aliciente más para los aficionados que acudan al torneo?

Efectivamente, la Costa del Sol es el destino de Europa continental con mayor concentración de campos de golf -cuenta con más de 70- lo que, sumado a un clima excepcional durante todo el año, supone que a la Costa del Sol se le conozca como la “Costa del Golf”. Los aficionados a este deporte encuentran aquí no solo una amplia variedad de campos donde practicar su ‘swing’, sino, además, una gran variedad de alojamiento y servicios de alto nivel que ofrecen la posibilidad de disfrutar de nuestra reconocida hospitalidad y degustar nuestra exquisita gastronomía andaluza.

Para alguien que no conozca la Costa del Sol, ¿qué tiene que ofrecer?

Quien no conozca la Costa del Sol ya está tardando en venir para descubrir un destino en el que la calidad y la excelencia envuelven toda la oferta turística. Tanto para quienes quieran practicar golf o cualquier deporte, quienes quieran disfrutar del Mediterráneo, de unos servicios excepcionales y por supuesto, de un gran patrimonio histórico y cultural, tanto en la costa como en el interior de la provincia de Málaga. A menos de nueve meses para que se celebre el torneo parece que será la primera edición de la Solheim Cup en la que se colgará el cartel de sold out y la venta por parte de los fans estadounidenses y asiáticos ha aumentado con respecto a la última

edición. ¿Supondrá el torneo una herramienta para atraer al turista de estos mercados que no son clientes tradicionales de la Costa del Sol? Es indudable que albergar un torneo de estas características es una oportunidad inmejorable para reforzar el posicionamiento como destino turístico.

Desde Turismo Costa del Sol hemos hecho una intensa promoción de la Solheim Cup y ya se han empezado a ver los resultados.

La comercialización de viajes para acudir a la Solheim Cup se está llevando a cabo a través de 23 turoperadores oficiales radicados en nueve países distintos (España, Portugal, Irlanda, Reino Unido, Alemania, Finlandia, Dinamarca, Holanda y EE.UU.) Esta venta masiva de paquetes turísticos ha derivado en otro apunte que no se puede pasar por alto: sólo quedan 1.100 habitaciones disponibles en el Accommodation Bureau de la Solheim Cup. Además, seguimos trabajando para afianzar el posicionamiento de nuestro destino con un gran portfolio de iniciativas. Desde participación en ferias hasta acciones promocionales que incluyen viajes de familiarización para que agentes de viaje y periodistas de todos los mercados, no solo los tradicionales, puedan conocer mejor todo lo que Costa del Sol puede ofrecer.

The Solheim Cup was an opportunity the Costa del Sol couldn’t miss?

Absolutely. Not only because of the media impact, which is already in excess of 120 million euros so far thanks to the promotion that has been going on since the event was announced, but also because, nine months before it starts, all the forecasts have been beaten with more than 45,000 tickets sold and passes for the Solheim Pavilion sold out. Likewise, organising an event of this nature and making the destination, its facilities and the tourism offer that goes hand in hand with golf even better known beyond our borders is a unique opportunity for the province of Malaga.

So far, the British and Irish have accounted for more than half of ticket sales, 53%, and other European Union nationalities 18%. Another piece of data that is beating all expectations is the sale of tickets to fans in the United States.

Whereas in previous Solheim Cups only 2% of the total number of tickets went to American spectators, this time the figure has tripled to 6%.

What will Solheim 2023 mean for the Costa del Sol and do you think it will mark a before and after for the tourism sector?

ith nine months to go until the Solheim Cup 2023 is held in Spain for the first time, the most important tournament in women’s golf is showing some impressive results already. Ticket sales have smashed all previous records for the event, confirming the commitment made by the Andalusian authorities and proving that the Costa del Sol was the best possible destination for the Solheim.

I am convinced that, both for the golf segment and for the wider tourism industry, Finca Cortesin hosting a tournament with these characteristics can only bring benefits for the Costa del Sol. We can feel very satisfied with the figures so far, which, as I mentioned earlier, have beaten all forecasts. After analysing all the data, the conclusion to be drawn is that the commitment made four years ago by the Andalusian authorities, with the Junta de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol, Acosol and the local councils in Marbella and Benahavís at the helm, to bring the Solheim Cup to Spain, was more than the right thing to do. And it comes when we are riding high as well, as in 2022 we surpassed all expectations in most measures for the tourist sector, and in some aspects had our best performance ever.

Golf is a sport but it also has an undeniable travel appeal to it. How important is golf for tourism in the province?

Golf, and in particular women’s golf, is a particularly interesting segment. Women golfers spend more and take advantage of a wider, complementary range of services. A competition as important as the Solheim Cup also brings with it demand for a large number of services such as bookings for hotels, restaurants, golf courses, car hire, etc. The estimated turnover at this stage is in excess of 18 million euros. The bulk of those bookings will be in Marbella and Benahavís, the hubs that will host the activities and entertainment beyond the golf course.

Golf is one of the reasons people travel the globe and the Costa del Sol has many good courses. Do you think the attractiveness of the area for tourists will be an added draw for fans who come to the tournament?

Indeed, the Costa del Sol is the destination in continental Europe with the highest concentration of golf courses - it has more than 70 – which, together with an exceptional climate all year round, means it is also known as the ‘Costa del Golf’. Golf enthusiasts will find not only a wide variety of courses where they can practice their swing, but also a huge range of accommodation and highquality services with the chance to enjoy our renowned hospitality and taste our fabulous Andalusian cuisine.

For someone who doesn’t know the Costa del Sol, what does it have to offer?

Anyone who doesn’t know the Costa del Sol is already coming late to discover a destination where quality and excellence envelop the entire tourism offer. For those who want to play golf or any sport, for those who want to enjoy the Mediterranean, exceptional services and, of course, great historical and cultural heritage, both on the coast and in inland Malaga province. The Costa del Sol has something for everyone and the best thing to do is to come and see for yourself.

With less than nine months to go to the tournament, it looks like it will be the first time the Solheim Cup will

be sold out and sales to American and Asian fans have increased compared to the last time it was held. Will the tournament be a tool to attract visitors from these markets, which are not traditional customers for the Costa del Sol? ¿Qué significa para ti la gastronomía?

Es mi manera de expresarme. La gastronomía es mi forma de conectar con otras personas y de defender valores como la cultura y la identidad. ¿Cómo ha sido tu desarrollo al frente de la cocina de El Lago y la influencia de su propia filosofía?

La filosofía del restaurante encajaba perfectamente con mis principios. Yo creía de antemano en lo que El Lago ya llevaba haciendo 20 años, así que la adaptación fue muy fácil. El desarrollo de mi cocina aquí ha sido muy natural, pero sin perder mi carácter. ¿Cómo es actualmente tu cocina en El Lago?

La cocina que hago es cada vez más natural y menos forzada, los propios ingredientes tienen que hablar por sí mismos, sin aparentar lo que no son. Creo que cuanto más conocimiento tienes, más sencilla tiene que ser la ejecución. ¿Qué ingredientes son los que te gusta cocinar?

Cualquiera que esté en temporada o que esté en su punto óptimo, principalmente me gustan las verduras o el marisco.

¿Por qué valoras tanto el producto de kilómetro cero?

Me siento identificado con mi tierra, es mucho más fácil cocinar con un producto que conoces y que puedes entender desde la raíz que uno del que solo conoces la etiqueta.

¿Cómo es esa relación estrecha con los productores y proveedores de la zona?

Es una relación muy satisfactoria, donde cada día aprendes algo. Para mí es muy importante apostar por nuestra economía circular. ¿Por qué creaste un menú vegetariano como Terrá?

Como comentaba anteriormente comparto la filosofía de El Lago que lleva toda la vida defendiendo el producto km0 y se da la circunstancia de que mi cocina cada vez es más vegetal, pero no solo porque crea en ella, también porque es la única que de verdad me permite hacer un menú degustación totalmente de aquí. No hay tanto pescado ni carne de Málaga. ¿Cómo es el menú Sazón y qué platos de proteína podemos encontrar?

Es un menú en el que elaboramos platos con lo mejor que ofrece la zona.

Encontramos mariscos de todo tipo, como unos alistados al ajillo o unas quisquillas

con una beurre blanc de acelgas; también hay salmonete, y la royal de chivo lechal a la mostaza. Nos encanta jugar con todo tipo de productos.

La propuesta del mediodía, Midi, no tiene nada que ver con la gastronomía de la noche en El Lago, y es más informal. ¿Qué encontramos en esa carta casual?

Aunque se ofrece en el mismo espacio, Midi es un restaurante totalmente distinto, mucho más informal, donde el nivel de cocina debe de estar a la altura, pero que nos permite hacer combinaciones o tener más platos de los que a mí me encantaría comer cada día. ¿A quién no le gustan unas patatas bravas o un pisto con atún? También disponemos de una carta de snacks para golfistas, ya que estamos dentro de Greenlife Golf, uno de los campos de golf de Marbella. ¿Qué perfil de clientes tiene El Lago? ¿Son muchos procedentes del mundo

del golf?

El perfil es un cliente con mucho gusto y unas ganas enormes de vivir una experiencia. Tenemos bastantes clientes que vienen a la Costa del Sol a jugar al golf y optan por cenar con nosotros y otros que acaban una ronda en nuestro campo y comen en Midi. ¿Cuáles son las acciones con las que el restaurante apuesta por la sostenibilidad?

En su compromiso con la sostenibilidad, El Lago ha puesto en marcha diferentes acciones con las que consigue causar menos impacto en el medio ambiente y cuidar del entorno. Un ejemplo de esta responsabilidad es la reutilización de los excedentes de su cocina, el uso de la vajilla con piezas de materiales reciclados o la colaboración con el campo de golf para hacer compost de los residuos del restaurante. Creemos firmemente que la sostenibilidad es también cuidar a nuestros empleados y dar el valor justo de cada producto a nuestros proveedores.

Fernando Villasclaras’s cuisine at Restaurante El Lago is elegant and simple in appearance, although very personal in its preparation, employing techniques that do not detract from the end result. It is my way of expressing myself.

Gastronomy is my way of connecting with other people and defending values such as culture and identity.

How have you blended being in charge of the kitchen at El Lago with the influence of your own philosophy?

The philosophy of the restaurant fitted perfectly with my principles. I came believing in what El Lago had already been doing for 20 years, so the change was very easy. My cuisine has progressed here very naturally, and without giving up my essence.

How would you describe your cuisine now at El Lago?

The cooking I do is more and more natural and less forced, the ingredients themselves have to speak for themselves, without appearing to be something they are not. I believe that the more knowledge you have, the simpler the execution has to be.

Which ingredients do you like to cook with?

Whichever is in season or at its best; I mostly like vegetables or seafood.

Why do you value zero-kilometre produce so highly?

I identify with my home turf; it is much easier to cook with a product that you know well and that you can understand right back to its roots than one that you only know from the label.

How is that close relationship with the producers and suppliers in the area?

It is a very satisfactory relationship, where you learn something every day.

For me it is very important to support our circular economy.

Why did you create a vegetarian menu such as Terrá?

As I was saying, I share the philosophy of El Lago, which has been defending km-0 produce all its life. It so happens that my cuisine is increasingly more based on vegetables, although not only because I believe in it, but also because it is the only way that really allows me to create a tasting menu entirely from here. There is not so much fish or meat from Malaga.

What is the Sazón menu and what protein dishes can we find on it?

It is a menu in which we prepare dishes with the best the area has to offer. We can find all kinds of seafood, such as

‘alistado’ prawns in garlic or ‘quisquilla’ shrimps with a ‘beurre blanc’ of chard; there is also red mullet, and suckling goat in mustard. We love to play with all kinds of produce.

The midday service, Midi, is very different to the evening cuisine at El Lago and is more informal. What is on this casual menu?

Although it is served in the same space, Midi is a totally different restaurant, much more informal, where the level of cooking has to be up to scratch but we can combine more things or have more of the everyday dishes I like to eat. Who doesn’t like ‘patatas bravas’ or Spanishstyle ‘pisto’ ratatouille with tuna? We also have a snack menu for golfers, as we are set within Greenlife Golf, one of Marbella’s courses.

What is the profile of El Lago’s customers? Are many of them from the world of golf?

The profile is of a client with great taste

and a huge desire to live an experience.

We have quite a few customers who come to the Costa del Sol to play golf and choose to dine with us and others who finish a round on our course and eat at Midi.

How does the restaurant demonstrate its commitment to sustainability?

As part of our commitment to sustainability, El Lago has taken various steps to reduce its impact on the environment and take care of its surroundings. Examples of this belief in taking responsibility are the reuse of surplus kitchen waste, the use of tableware made from recycled materials or the collaboration with the golf course to make compost from the restaurant’s waste. Este es el primer proyecto de GHL HOTELES en Andalucía y ha supuesto una inversión de 3,5 millones de euros. ¿En qué ha consistido? ¿Cuáles han sido los cambios realizados en el hotel?

La propiedad se construyó en el 2004 y pasó antes por otras marcas y otros gestores, hasta que cerró sus puertas en la pandemia en el 2020. Se hizo una inversión en la primera fase del proyecto, durante el segundo semestre del 2022, en la que se ha buscado refrescar y renovar el producto. En ellas se actuó sobre las 300 habitaciones y zonas comunes como la piscina exterior, salones de eventos y spa. La inversión total de la propiedad será aún mayor en 2023, complementando detalles en habitaciones y en las áreas de restauración, ya que el hotel cuenta con 2 restaurantes y 3 bares.

El hotel actualmente se encuentra abierto, pero espera estar a punto para la temporada primavera – verano y así reposicionarse en la Costa del Sol. El hotel se sitúa en un plena Costa del Sol, entre las localidades de Marbella y Estepona, una de las más visitadas por el turismo nacional e internacional y que en 2022 atrajo a más de 12 millones de turistas. ¿Cuál será la estrategia comercial que seguirá el hotel?

We spoke with Kevin Toral who, with over 15 years’ professional experience in the tourism industry in Latin America, is in charge of opening of the hotel as sales and marketing director.

h Nice Caledonia is the first venture in Spain for multinational hotel chain GHL Hoteles. In its search for efficient hotel management opportunities, this leader in the hotel sector in Latin America has opted for the Costa del Sol.

This is the first GHL HOTELES project in Andalucia and involves an investment of 3.5 million euros. What has gone into it? What changes have been made to the hotel?

The property was built in 2004 and was run by other brands and operators before shutting in the pandemic in 2020. In the second half of 2022, investment was made in the first phase of the project, which set out to refresh and renew the product. The 300 guest rooms and public areas, such as the outdoor swimming pool, function rooms and spa, have been refurbished. There will be even more overall investment in the property in 2023, with finishing touches to the guest rooms and the restaurant areas; the hotel has two restaurants and three bars.

The hotel is open at the moment and expects to be fully ready for the coming spring-summer season, and so able to reposition itself within the Costa del Sol market.

The hotel is in the heart of the Costa del Sol, between the towns of Marbella and Estepona, one of the top destinations for both national and international tourism which attracted more than 12 million visitors in 2022.

What will the sales and marketing strategy be for the hotel?

Those of us within corporate sales and marketing at GHL Hoteles have prepared for our entry into the Spanish market, fully learning about local dynamics that include features such as seasonality, countries of origin and reason for travel, demand, distribution, etc. We did this in collaboration with local consultants.

Los federados de golf en Andalucía ya ascienden a

Los federados de golf en Andalucía ya ascienden a 50.000, según datos publicados por La Real Federación Andaluza de Golf. Con un total de 50.003 licencias, según refleja el último recuento el golf en Andalucía ha sumado más de 1.100 nuevos aficionados al deporte, lo que supone un incremento interanual del 2,3 por ciento.

Este dato es especialmente importante si tenemos en cuenta que el número de federados no se situaba por encima de los 50.000 desde el año 2012, cuando la crisis económica hizo que la comunidad andaluza iniciara un periodo de descenso en las licencias, que no comenzó su remontada hasta 2019, año que, en términos estadísticos, se consideró un punto de inflexión. Precisamente, el crecimiento desde principios del año 2020 hasta este inicio de 2023 ha sido de más del 12 por ciento.

Pablo Mansilla, presidente de la Real Federación Andaluza de Golf, ya adelantó este aumento de licencias en la Reunión Anual de Directores de Campos de Golf celebrada el pasado 31 de enero, en la sede federativa. En el encuentro, el presidente del organismo destacó la

importancia de las labores de promoción llevadas a cabo por las diferentes escuelas de golf andaluzas para acercar el deporte a la sociedad.

De igual modo, puso en valor el importante papel que la celebración de grandes eventos de golf en la comunidad andaluza tiene para la promoción del deporte entre la sociedad y para la creación de nuevos aficionados. En este sentido, este año 2023 supone un hito por la celebración, durante el mes de septiembre, de la Solheim Cup – máxima competición internacional del golf femenino y una de las pruebas más importantes del deporte femenino mundial- en el campo malagueño de Finca Cortesín.

En cuanto al reparto de licencias por provincias, destacar que, de estas 50.000 licencias de federados, más de 20.500 se encuentran en la provincia de Málaga que -seguida de Cádiz, que cuenta con más de 10.300- es la provincia con mayor número de aficionados a este deporte de la región andaluza y, además, cuenta con la mayor concentración de campos de golf de toda la Europa Continental.

La Monacilla Golf Club, se encuentra en el término municipal de Aljaraque, a 5 minutos de la ciudad de Huelva y a una hora de los aeropuertos de Sevilla y Faro.

El campo, diseñado por José Mª Olazábal, ocupa una situación privilegiada, rodeado de zonas verdes, y cercano a la desembocadura del río Odiel. Un diseño de calles con movimientos suaves y ligeras ondulaciones, muy adaptado a la topografía del terreno haciendo el recorrido agradable para el paso de los jugadores y atractivo desde el punto de vista paisajístico. Las suaves pendientes, el agua, su paisaje, sus condiciones climáticas y sus espectaculares greenes convierten a La Monacilla Golf Club en el campo de referencia de la zona.

La Monacilla Golf Club is placed in Aljaraque, only 5 minutes away from Huelva and an hour from Sevilla and Faro airport. The course was designed by José Mª Olazábal and it is ideally located in a natural environment near the Odiel river mouth. Fairways have been designed for soft movements and slight unevenness adapting to the topography and thus, providing a pleasant itinerary for players as well as attractive natural surroundings.

Its soft slopes, the water, its surroundings, the weather and its excellent greens make La Monacilla Golf Club a reference golf course in the area.

CORTA ATALAYA GOLF

Situado a los pies de la Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, el Club de Golf Corta Atalaya, el más antiguo de la Península, remonta sus orígenes a finales del siglo XIX (1914) cuando los técnicos ingleses que trabajaban para la compañía minera

de Río tinto lo fundaron con el nombre de North Lodge Golf Club. Fue reubicado en 1992 en un nuevo asentamiento, desde el que se puede divisar la corta del que toma su denominación actual. Uno de los mayores encantos de este campo es el espectáculo cromático que ofrece la corta minera, con sus tonos rojizos y cobrizos y ocres. Se trata de un campo de 9 hoyos con (3 par -3,5 par -4 y 1 par -5). La mitad del recorrido es bastante llano, no lo son así dos de sus calles que poseen unas pendientes bastante respetables. La gran singularidad de este campo es que sus calles son de tierra.

Placed at the foot of Aracena and Picos de Aroche Mountains, Corta Atalaya Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Spain. Its origin dates back to the end of the nineteenth century (1914) when English technicians were working in the Riotinto Mines and founded this golf club as North Lodge Golf Club. It was relocated in a new place in 1992 and from there the “corta” (mine) that gives its name to the course can be seen. One of the biggest attractions of this course is the colour display of the Corta of the Riotinto Mines with its reddish, copper and ochre colours. It is a 9-hole course with (3 par -3, 5 par -4 and 1 par -5). Half of the itinerary is quite even except for two quite steep fairways. Its soil fairways make this a unique golf course.

ISLA CANELA LINKS

De absoluta reciente reapertura, se encuentra situado en el término municipal de Ayamonte, a solo 2 kilómetros de la autopista que conecta directamente con Sevilla y Portugal (A-49). Valle Guadiana Links Golf Club es parte de la Urbanización Costa Esuri, en Ayamonte, en el que sus calles discurren bordeando el Río Guadiana con unas espectaculares vistas del país vecino, Portugal.
