En la pasada edición de la feria de turismo de golf más importante del mundo, la IGTM, celebrada en Mallorca, se respiraba un ambiente muy positivo y los comentarios de los profesionales de ambos bandos, tanto turoperadores como destinos, auguraban unas previsiones muy por encima de los últimos años.

Este evento anual es un magnifico termómetro y señala el camino de cuáles serán las tendencias de los viajeros de golf de cara al año siguiente.

El caso es que España se encuentra en la pole como destino preferido de los golfistas de medio planeta, no en balde, un destino como Andalucía ha sido designado como preferido por los golfistas europeos durante 2016.

A pesar de algún que otro varapalo, como el tan cacareado Brexit, con consecuencias todavía inciertas, el futuro del turismo de golf en nuestro país empieza a gozar de muy buena salud, de hecho a “marcas” dentro de esta industria como Canarias o la anteriormente citada Andalucía se les están uniendo nuevos destinos emergentes como el Levante español y hasta Madrid, donde se ha creado GolfMadrid una plataforma para hacer de la capital, un destino de golf.

Campos de golf de primer nivel, clima, resorts de ensueño, infraestructuras, oferta alternativa, gastronomía, seguridad, comunicaciones, etc., lo cierto es que es difícil ponerle una pega a un producto como el que tenemos entre las manos pero cuidado, como todo aquello que es muy valioso, también tiene muchas amenazas. En nuestro caso, otros destinos, la devaluación de la moneda emisora, etc., pero el peor enemigo que tenemos, somos nosotros mismos.

La manera en la que obremos en estos primeros momentos en los que empezamos a recuperar la estabilidad, marcaran el devenir y la consolidación del destino. Si queremos fortaleza del producto a largo plazo, el proceso debe ser sostenible y muy coherente, no querer recuperar lo perdido en 5 años en 6 meses. En resumen, vienen buenos tiempos y, si somos inteligentes, serán buenos y largos.

15 AÑOS DE MEJORAS EN BAVIERA GOLF Baviera Golf es un campo Pay and Play, diseñado por Jose Maria Cañizares que lleva 15 años siendo uno de los campos más populares de la zona Oriental de La Costa del Sol. Su secreto sobre todo, el mantenimiento del campo y el trato al cliente, que puede utilizar todos los servicios en las mismas condiciones que los abonados. Su greenkeeper, José Antonio Paniagua, nos explica cómo ha evolucionado el campo en cuanto al mantenimiento y las reformas que se han llevado a cabo.

————— ¿Cómo ha sido la evolución del campo en estos 15 años?

La evolución del campo ha sido notable en todos los aspectos.

Desde el principio, el leitmotiv de Baviera fue el mantenimiento y el servicio al cliente. En principio el campo tenía 9 hoyos hasta que en 2004 se añadieron 9 más hasta completar 18, también se sustituyó la antigua Casa Club, que era un cortijo de campo, por una Casa Club moderna y funcional.

A partir de esta fecha hemos ido mejorando constantemente nuestras instalaciones, incorporando el sistema de recogida de agua de lluvia, optimizando el sistema de riego y el sistema de drenaje e instalando condensadores para el ahorro de energía.

El paisajismo del campo también ha mejorado significativamente, con el plantado de árboles que han embellecido nuestro entorno, al mismo tiempo que se han integrado en el diseño fuentes ornamentales y monolitos. Se ha realizado una resiembra y por supuesto, se han ido acondicionando poco a poco los caminos.

de prácticas, comenzando con la ampliación de la distancia a 250 metros y la ampliación a 25 plazas de esterillas, que hacen más fácil la práctica del juego, sin olvidar el putting green. ¿Qué mejoras tenéis previstas en el futuro?

Hoy día seguimos trabajando en las mejoras del campo con el objetivo y la ilusión intactos, que no es otra que la de satisfacer las necesidades de nuestros clientes. Para ello estamos renovando la maquinaria de mantenimiento del campo, realizando la re-circulación, la ampliación de cascadas de algún lago de los hoyos 14 y 15 para la aireación del agua, seguimos sembrando árboles y tenemos proyectado la ampliación de algún tee de salida.

Y en el terreno medioambiental se está llevando a cabo el reciclaje de todos los restos de césped y está en proyecto incorporar el reciclado de las podas que se realicen en cada temporada.

Baviera Golf is a Pay and Play golf course designed by José María Cañizares. It has been one of the most popular golf courses in the eastern Costa del Sol. Its secret is mainly based on the golf course maintenance and customer service, as customers can use all the services under the same conditions as members. Its greenkeeper, José Antonio Paniagua, explains the development of this golf course regarding maintenance and works that have been carrying out.

————— How has the golf course developed in these 15 years?

The development of the golf course has been significant in all aspects. From the beginning, the leitmotiv of Baviera has been maintenance and customer service. At the beginning, the golf course had 9 holes until 9 more were added to complete 18 holes in 2004. The old Club House which was an old country house was substituted by a more modern and practical Club House. Since that date, we have been improving our facilities constantly. We have incorporated a rain collecting system, optimizing the irrigation and draining system and installing condensers to save energy.

Landscape gardening in the golf course has also improved considerably. Trees have been planted adding beauty to our environment and at the same time, ornamental fountains and monoliths have been integrated in the design. A re-sowing has been done and obviously, paths have been prepared.

One of the other improvements is the changes taken place in the area of the practice course. We have started with extending 250 m the distance and we have increased in 25 the number

of mats that make the game easier; not forgetting the putting green.

What improvements are there planned for the future?

We are currently working on the golf course improvements with clear objectives and feeling very excited and thus, satisfy the needs of our customers. To do this, we are renewing the golf maintenance machinery, we are working on recirculation, extending the waterfalls of one of the lakes in hole 14 and 15 in order to ventilate the water, we continue planting trees and we have planned the extension of one of the exit tees.

La vinculación al golf de Autos Gilmar y de unos de sus socios, José María Gil, viene de lejos.

Era el 2003 cuando José María Gil cogía un palo de golf por primera vez y comenzaba a dar bolas. Es socio y Vicepresidente del Club de Golf Marbella fundado en el año 1991 y parte activa de golf en Marbella tanto en el patrocinio de eventos como en la organización de varios torneos de golf a lo largo del año.

——————— Autos Gilmar abrió en el año 1993 y es uno de los establecimientos pioneros en multimarcas y km. 0. ¿Cómo ha sido vuestra evolución?

Después de casi 24 años el balance es positivo. Ha habido épocas buenas y malas como en todos los negocios y más en un sector tan sensible a las crisis como el del automóvil. ¿Y la del sector?

El sector automovilístico es como he dicho muy sensible a las crisis económicas.

Me refiero a que es uno de los primeros sectores en entrar en dificultades en los malos tiempos pero también es uno de los primeros en salir cuando la economía se recupera. Ahora estamos saliendo de una época de una tremenda y dura recesión y el primer síntoma de bonanza es cambiar de coche. ¿Qué vehículos son los que puede encontrar el cliente en Gilmar?

vos y de una amplia variedad de marcas y modelos.

A parte de la compra-venta de vehículos, ¿qué otros servicios ofrecéis al cliente?

Nosotros acompañamos al cliente desde el asesoramiento en la elección del vehículo que más se adecúe a sus necesidades, en la gestión de la financiación, valoración de su coche antiguo y la gestión de toda la documentación. Desde que entras hasta que sales conduciendo tu nuevo coche.

El sector automovilístico ha sido uno de los más castigados por la crisis económica pero el mercado de segunda mano ha resistido mejor, ¿en qué momento se encuentra ahora?

Sí es verdad que el mercado de segunda mano es más flexible y se adapta mejor a los cambios en la economía. Ahora como casi todos los sectores empieza a verse cierta alegría pero de todas formas te diré que me parece que ahora vamos hacia un mercado más racional.

What has your company development been like?

After nearly 24 years the result is a positive one. There have been good and bad times like in any business and especially in the car industry which is very sensitive to economic crisis.

We are coming out of a tremendously hard recession and the first sign of prosperity is changing your car.

What about the industry?

As I said, the car industry is very sensitive to economic crisis. I mean, it is one of the sectors that gets first into difficulties at bad times. What kind of cars can a client find in Gilmar?

Mainly pre-owned cars in a wide variety of brands and models.

In addition to car purchase and sale, what other services do you offer clients?

We assist clients advising them in the choice of car to suit their needs, in finance management, valuing their old cars and dealing with paperwork. From the moment they come in to the moment they leave with their new car.

The car industry has been badly affected by economic crisis. However, the second hand market has resisted in better shape. What is business like at the moment?

It is true that the second hand market is more flexible and it adapts better to economy changes. As in all the other sectors, we are starting to see glimpses of optimism. Nevertheless, I feel we are heading towards a more rational market. ✪

EL LUJO DE LOS DETALLES Sólo llegar a Finca Cortesin y ya empiezas a hacerte una idea del concepto de lujo que practica el resort y de por qué han conseguido en los últimos años convertirlo en un destino en sí mismo.

El equilibrio entre la formación y el empuje del personal más joven y la experiencia aportada por un personal con un gran bagaje, es una de las claves. Su Director General, Rene Zimmer, es buen ejemplo de ello, lleva más de 20 años aportando talento en diferentes hoteles y resorts de Alemania, Rusia, Suiza, Austria y, desde 2009, en España, en Finca Cortesin.

Yo creo que el paradigma del lujo ha cambiado.

Hace 30 ó 40 años el lujo se asociaba a cosas superficiales. Hoy en día creo que el lujo tiene más profundidad de la que a priori puede pensarse. Por ejemplo cuando alguien viene a un resort como Finca Cortesin, el lujo está en los detalles.

————— El Resort está dividido en 5 áreas, Hotel, Golf, Spa y Club Deportivo, Beach Club y Zona Residencial, ¿qué encuentra el huésped de Finca Cortesin en cada una de ellas?

La oferta de Finca Cortesin es enormemente amplia. En cuanto al alojamiento tenemos 67 suites, todas Juniors y Executives y 4 de ellas con piscina privada, además de las villas que también se alquilan a través del hotel. Las zonas públicas son muy amplias, 2 patios principales y 23.000m² de jardines donde el cliente puede disfrutar del clima de la zona, 2 piscinas una de ellas de tamaño olímpico y un gimnasio con máquinas de Technogym que hemos cambiado hace un año. Nuestro Spa es un punto muy importante, el turismo de salud atrae a cada vez más viajeros y el nuestro cuenta con 2.500m² en los que hay una piscina climatizada de 25 metros de largo y 12 cabinas de tratamientos, además de una parte que llamamos Spa Thai en la que nuestro equipo formado en Tailandia y en las mejores escuelas del mundo aplican tratamientos tailandeses, balineses...

Este año se ha abierto en los locales de nuestro patio central una tienda de ropa con una variedad bastante amplia y otra de regalos.

El campo de golf merece un capítulo aparte, curiosamente se construyó antes que el resort y ha sido sede durante 3 años del Volvo World Match Play Championship, uno de los más prestigioso torneos del mundo a nivel profesional.

Para el 2017, comenzaremos la renovación de los greens, con un tiempo de ejecución que está previsto que sea del 26 de Junio hasta la apertura de los 18 hoyos el día 31 de Julio. Con estas actuaciones se busca una mejoría considerable de la superficie de juego y mantener unos greens más sostenibles, por lo que se cambiará la hierba actual por la variedad ultradwarf bermuda grass. Esta hierba se adapta mejor a nuestro clima cálido, necesita menos riego y es mucho más resistente a enfermedades, a la salinidad del agua y a todo tipo de plagas. Seremos el primer campo en la Península en implantar este tipo de hierba en greens, aunque es habitual encontrar campos con éstas bermudas en USA, Caribe y Emiratos árabes. La nueva hierba se implantará en tepes, provenientes de un vivero situado en una finca de Plasencia propiedad de la empresa Novogreen, especialista en tepes. Finalmente, se presentará un video realizado por una empresa audiovisual de todo el proceso.

¿Cuál es el perfil del viajero que visita Finca Cortesin?

Principalmente son extranjeros. Nuestros mercados son por orden de importancia el británico, el alemán, suizo, austriaco, el norteamericano, que es un mercado que cada vez crece más en nuestro resort y por último el nacional, que acude sobre todo en los meses de verano, Semana Santa y Navidades.

Tenéis uno de los mejores campos de golf de España, ¿es determinante el campo para elegir Finca Cortesin como destino?

Pues te diré que durante un tiempo sí, ya te he comentado que el campo se construyó antes que el hotel por lo que en principio los clientes nos llegaban por el golf pero hoy en día ya no es así. El turismo de golf representa ahora un 25% del total anual de visitas. No cabe duda de que el golf es muy importante para el resort pero hemos conseguido a base de trabajo duro de todo el equipo, que Finca Cortesin, además de un magnífico campo de golf, pueda ofrecer al huésped un lugar que se quede en su memoria más allá de las vacaciones. En los comienzos parecía que la ubicación del resort, en Casares, podía ser una desventaja pero

la tendencia ha cambiado por completo y ahora es una clara ventaja. El viajero quiere poder elegir, si le apetece total tranquilidad y estar rodeado de naturaleza aquí lo encuentra pero si un día le apetece vida nocturna o un ambiente más bullicioso, tiene a 10 minutos Sotogrande y a 15 Puerto Banús. Otra ventaja son las comunicaciones estamos a 50 minutos del Aeropuerto Internacional de Málaga y a 20 del de Gibraltar. ¿Qué piensa usted que es lo más importante que tiene que ofrecer un establecimiento de Gran Lujo?

Yo creo que el paradigma del lujo ha cambiado. Hace 30 ó 40 años el lujo se asociaba a cosas superficiales. Hoy en día creo que el lujo tiene más profundidad de la que a priori puede pensarse. Por ejemplo cuando alguien viene a un resort como Finca Cortesin, el lujo está en los detalles.

Un aspecto que hemos intentado llevar a cabo desde el principio es el lujo con más humanidad, no queremos ser un establecimiento de Gran Lujo y por eso ser arrogantes o distantes con nuestros clientes.

Aquí todo el personal sabe el nombre de cada uno de los huéspedes y procuramos adelantarnos a sus gustos y preferencias, siempre con una gran discreción. La atención al cliente es algo que todo el mundo repite pero luego hay que hacerlo.

La gastronomía es, como no podía ser menos, otro de los puntos fuertes de finca Cortesin.

Sí, la restauración es muy importante para el resort. Tenemos 6 restaurantes en total. El Jardín de Lutz es un restaurante con platos basados en la cocina tradicional española pero ejecutados con un toque de modernidad, el Kabuki Raw, es

un referente internacional de la cocina japonesa más ortodoxa que mantiene la Estrella Michelín desde hace dos años y Don Giovanni, es una opción de comida italiana para familias o comidas más informales, pizzas, pasta…, ya sabes, la comida italiana gusta a todo el mundo. De Marzo a Octubre abrimos el Beach Club que está situado a 1,5 Km. del resort, en la Bahía de Casares. Esto son 6000m² con una piscina de 40m. y un restaurante donde servimos la típica cocina de la Costa, pescados, arroces, y cosas que se pueden comer en un chiringuito de playa. En nuestra piscina de 35 metros hay un restaurante con una carta muy variada de pescados, carnes, ensaladas y pastas.

Además del restaurante de la Casa Club en el campo de golf.

Lleva usted ya unos añitos en la industria hotelera, tengo entendido que unos 23 en varios destinos por todo el mundo. ¿Cómo ve Andalucía como destino en comparación con otros destinos internacionales?

Creo que Andalucía es uno de los destinos más importantes de Europa, y hay muchos motivos para ello, el clima, gastronomía, cultura. En Andalucía tienes todo lo que busques.

España y en concreto Andalucía está batiendo todos los records de recepción de turistas. Para este exponencial aumento hay varias teorías. Una de ellas es la inestabilidad política en algunos de los destinos que compiten con España. ¿Cree por tanto que este turismo es prestado?

Verdaderamente no creo que sea prestado pero, en el caso de que lo fuera, nuestra misión es conseguir que el cliente se quede y repita.

LUXURY IN DETAIL When reaching Finca Cortesín you already start to get an idea of the luxury concept exercised in the resort and why it has managed to become a destination in itself in the last years.The balance between the qualifications and eagerness of the youngest members of staff and the experience provided by the more knowledgeable members is one of the keys. Its General Manager, Rene Zimmer, is a good example of this. He has been showing his inner talent in different hotels and resorts in Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Austria for more than twenty years and in Spain in Finca Cortesín since 2009.

I think the paradigm of luxury has changed. 30 or 40 years ago luxury it was associated to superficial things. Nowadays, I think luxury is a much deeper concept that one can think at first glance simple.

For example, when you visit a resort like Finca Cortesín, luxury is found in small details.

————— The Resort is divided in 5 areas, Hotel, Golf, Spa and Sport Club, Beach Club and Residential Area, what does a guest of Finca Cortesín find in each of them?

The offer in Finca Cortesín is tremendously wide. Regarding accommodation we have 67 suites, all of them are Junior and Executive Suites and 4 of them have a private swimming pool in addition to the villas which are also rented at the hotel. Common areas are very big, 2 main patios and 23,000 m2 of gardens where customers can enjoy the climate of the area, 2 swimming pools, one of them Olympic size and a gym equipped with Technogym machines which we changed a year ago.

Our Spa is a very important spot, health tourism attracts more and more travelers and ours is 2,500 m2 where there is a 25 metre-long heated pool and 12 treatment cabins as well as an area that we call Thai Spa where our team trained in Thailand and in the best schools in the world use Thai, Balinese…. treatments.

This year a clothes shop has opened in the commercial site of our central patio which has a wide variety of products as well as a gift shop.

The golf course deserves an individual chapter. The golf course, curiously enough, was built before the resort. It has been the headquarters of the Volvo World Match Play Championship for

three years, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world at a professional level. In 2017 we are going to start the renovation of greens. These works are expected to take place from 26th June until the opening of the 18hole course on 31st July. This renovation is planned to improve the playing surface significantly and make greens more sustainable. Thus, we are going to change the grass for ultradwarf bermuda grass. This grass adapts better to our warm weather, it needs less water and it is more resistant to diseases, water salinity and all kinds of plagues. We will be the first golf course in Spain to plant this kind of grass in greens. Bermuda grass is commonly found in golf courses in USA, in the Caribbean and in Arab Emirates. The new grass will be implemented in turfs from a garden centre located in a rural estate in Plasencia owned by Novogreen, a company specialized in turf. Finally, a video recorded by an audiovisual company showing the whole process will be presented.

What is the profile of travelers who visit Finca Cortesín?

They are mainly foreigners. Our market is in order of importance, the British, German, Swiss, Austrian, American which is the fastest growing market at our resort and finally, the national market which visits us in the summer

months, at Easter and at Christmas.

You have one of the best golf courses in Spain, is the golf course decisive when choosing Finca Cortesín as a destination?

Well, I must tell you it was for some time. I have already told you that the golf course was built before the hotel, so at the beginning customers arrived because of the golf course; however, now it is not like that. Golf tourism represents 25% of total annual amount of visitors.

Undoubtedly, golf is very important for the resort. However, with hard work from all the members of the team, Finca Cortesín, apart from a magnificent golf course, can offer the guest a place that will last in their memories past their holiday. In its beginnings, the location of the resort in Casares seemed to be a disadvantage. However, the tendency has changed completely and now it is a clear advantage. The traveler wants to be able to choose if he/she feels like it either peace and quiet and be surrounded by nature which you can find here or one day night life and a bustling atmosphere, as Sotogrande is only ten minutes away and Puerto Banús is 15 minutes away. Another advantage is travel communication. We are 50 minutes from Málaga International Airport and 20 minutes from Gibraltar.

What do you think is the most important thing that a luxury hotel can offer?

I think the paradigm of luxury has changed. 30 or 40 years ago luxury it was associated to superficial things.

Nowadays, I think luxury is a much deeper concept that one can think at first glance simple. For example, when you visit a resort like Finca Cortesín, luxury is found in small details. We have tried to develop a more human kind of luxury; we do not want to be a luxury hotel and thus, be arrogant or distant to our clients. All the members of staff know the names of each of our guests and we try to anticipate to their likes and preferences discreetly. Customer service is something that everybody talks about but then, it must be carried out.

Gastronomy is, by all means, another key point at Finca Cortesín.

Yes, the restaurant business is very important for the resort. We have 6 restaurants in total. The Jardín de Lutz is a restaurant which offers dishes based on 22 | GC#21

Spanish traditional cuisine but cooked with a modern touch, the Kabuki Raw, is an international reference restaurant in Japanese cuisine that has maintained the Michelin Star for two years, and Don Giovanni, the Italian cuisine option for families and more informal meals, pizzas, pasta,… you know, the Italian food everyone likes. From March to October we open the Beach Club. It is located 1.5 Km from the resort, on Casares Bay. 6,000 m2 with a 40 metre swimming pool and a restaurant where we serve the typical cuisine from the Coast, fish, rice and the kind of things you can eat at a beach restaurant. There is a restaurant in our 35 metre swimming pool with a varied menu with different types of fish, meat, salads and pasta. In addition to the Club House located in the golf course.

All our restaurants use local produce.

You have been in the hotel industry for some years, I understand, 23 years in different destinations around the world. How do you see Andalucía as a destination in com-

parison to other international destinations?

I think Andalucía is one of the most important destinations in Europe, and there are many reasons for this, its climate, gastronomy, culture. Andalucía has everything you are looking for.

Spain and Andalucía more precisely is beating all records in tourist reception. There are several theories for this exponential growth.

One of them is the political instability in some of the competition destinations. Do you think this tourism is borrowed from them?

I truly think it is not borrowed.

However, if this were the case, our task is to make the guest stay and repeat the experience. ✪

ADOR A JUGADO G U J R DE ALEXANDER AMEY & ÁLVARO QUIRÓS Aexander Amey Bollar, tiene 11 años y juega al golf desde que tenía 3 cuando sus padres le regalaron sus primeros palos.

A los seis años ingresó en la Escuela de Golf de La Cañada y a los siete años ya contaba con dos victorias en la Fase Final del Pequecircuito de Andalucía, entre otros muchos premios. A los 9 años cambio a la escuela del Real Club de Golf Guadalmina bajo la tutela de Antonio Jimenez hasta que, en Septiembre de 2016 empezó su colaboración con Francisco Tineo en Almenara Golf Club. Además, es socio del Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, donde ha recibido un reconocimiento en homenaje a tres de sus mayores logros: bicampeón de España Benjamin del 2015 y 2013 y campeón de España Alevín U11, algo que está al alcance de muy pocos y que refleja las grandes aptitudes de Alexander como jugador.

Es un chico simpático, extrovertido y aficionado a los deportes, también practica tenis y fútbol; actividades que compagina con sus estudios en el Colegio Internacional de Sotogrande. Además, habla español, inglés y francés. El golf es su ilusión y a su corta edad, ya ha ganado más de cuarenta trofeos, pero por encima de todo juega al golf porque le divierte.

En estas páginas Alexander entrevista al jugador Álvaro Quirós que le cuenta como fueron sus inicios en el golf y le da varios consejos que le pueden ayudar a mejorar.

Alexander Amey Bollar is 11 years old and has been playing tennis since the age of 3 when his parents bought him his first golf clubs. At the age of six he joined the La Cañada Golf School and at the age of 7 he already had two victories in the Final Phase of Andalucía’s Circuit for Children, amongst other awards. At the age of 9 he changed to Real Club Guadalmina Golf School under the responsibility of Antonio Jiménez until he started collaborating with Francisco Tineo at Almenara Golf Club in September 2016. He is also a member of the Sotogrande Real Golf Club where he received recognition for his three most important achievements: two-times Spanish champion for eight-ten years olds in 2013 and 2015 and Spanish champion Under 11, which is only available to very few and which shows Alexander’s great talent as a player.

He is a friendly, extrovert boy, keen on sports who also plays tennis and football.

He combines these activities with his studies at The International School of Sotogrande. He also speaks Spanish, English and French. Golf is his dream and at his young age he has already won more than forty trophies. However, above all else he plays golf because he enjoys it.

On these pages Alexander interviews the player Álvaro Quirós who tells him how he started in golf and he gives him pieces of advice that can help him improve.

——————— Alex: Álvaro, ¿a qué edad empezaste a jugar? Álvaro: Comencé a jugar con nueve años.

Alex: ¿Qué te llevó a un campo de golf? Álvaro: Fueron realmente dos motivos.

Por un lado, mi padre era jugador de golf y desde pequeño ya conocía este deporte y por otro, la fundación del Club de Golf La Cañada al lado de casa, el primer club público de España.

Alex: ¿Practicabas otros deportes con esa edad? Álvaro: ¡Claro! Jugué al fútbol al mismo tiempo que al golf hasta los 16 años.

Alex: ¿Por qué crees que el golf es un deporte fantástico para niños?

Álvaro: Principalmente porque es un deporte muy sano, se juega al aire libre y estás en contacto con la naturaleza, eso es algo que no pasa con otros deportes.

Y además, hay que ser muy disciplinado, jugar todos los días y ayuda a formar el carácter de una persona. Hay que controlar los nervios, el temperamento, ser humilde, etc.

Alex: ¿Para dedicarse al golf hay que tener algo especial? Álvaro: Es muy importante tener dedicación, muchas ganas de practicar este deporte y ser una persona muy persistente.

Alex: ¿Qué es lo más positivo del golf para los niños? Álvaro: Te ayuda a tener contacto con niños de diferentes edades, conocer gente de otros lugares y tener una rutina y horario disciplinados.

Alex: ¿Qué consejos le darías a un niño de mi edad (10-11 años)? Álvaro: Solamente que hay que disfrutar jugando al golf.

Alex: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esa edad? Álvaro: Guardo muy buenos recuerdos de esta época, las tardes que pasaba en el campo de golf con mis amigos y lo bien que lo pasábamos cuando íbamos a los campeonatos de Andalucía los fines de semana.

Alex: ¿Qué ha cambiado para ti desde entonces? Álvaro: Mucho. El principal cambio es que aquello era diversión, un deporte, y ahora es mi profesión.

Alex: ¿Qué es lo que más te gusta del golf? Álvaro: Cuando soy capaz de jugar una ronda y estoy disfrutando porque he

conseguido el objetivo que me había propuesto.

Alex: ¿Está bien organizado el golf para niños en la zona? Álvaro: Tenemos una organización adecuada para el golf, con buenas escuelas, hay torneos para niños. Todo es mejorable.

Alex: ¿Qué hay que hacer para convertirse en un campeón como tú? Álvaro: Hay que ser una persona muy sacrificada y disciplinada para ser un buen golfista. Lo más importante es trabajar mucho.

Alex: ¿Hay otros deportes compatibles con el golf? Álvaro: Claro, practicar deportes como el ping pong, el surf o la natación son buenos y positivos para el golf, sin embargo, el fútbol no es tan aconsejable por el riesgo de lesiones.

Alex: ¿Te gustaría que tus hijos jugasen al golf? Álvaro: ¡Ojalá! Me encantaría que jugasen al golf y disfrutasen de este deporte maravilloso.

Alex: ¿Qué cualidades son importantes para practicar este deporte? Álvaro: Mentalmente hay que ser una persona disciplinada y fuerte, además cuanto mejor estés físicamente, mejor podrás jugar.

Alex: Para ti, ¿cuál es el golpe más importante? Álvaro: Todos son importantes pero el putt es, probablemente, el que decide la ronda al final aunque si el juego largo no es bueno, el putt no es determinante.

Alex: ¿Qué golpe hay que practicar más? Álvaro: El putt

Alex: Álvaro, how old were you when you started playing? Álvaro: I started at the age of 9.

Alex: What made you go to a golf course? Álvaro: Two reasons. On one hand, my father was a golf player and since I was small I became familiar with this sport and on the other hand, La Cañada Golf Club was next to my house, the first club open to the public in Spain.

Alex: Did you play other sports at that age? Álvaro: Of course! I played football at the same time as I was playing golf until the age of 16.

Alex: Why do you think golf is a fantastic sport for children? Álvaro: Mainly because it is a very healthy sport, you play outdoors and you are in contact with nature and that is something that does not happen with other sports. Besides, you have to be very disciplined, play every day and this helps to forge your personality.

You have to control your nerves, your temper, be humble, etc….

Alex: Do you need anything special to practice golf? Álvaro: It is very important to devote yourself with dedication, be keen on practicing and be a very persistent person.

Alex: What is the most positive thing golf has for children? Álvaro: It helps you relate to children of different ages, meet people from other places and have a much disciplined routine and time-table.

Alex: What advice would you give a child my age (10-11 years old)? Álvaro: You only have to enjoy playing golf.

Alex: What memories do you have of that age? Álvaro: I have very good memories of that time, of the afternoons I used to spend on the golf course with my friends and the good time we had when we played the championships of Andalucía at the weekends.

Alex: What has changed for you since then? Álvaro: A lot. The most important change was the fun, it was just a sport and now this is my occupation.

Alex: What do you like the most about playing golf? Álvaro: When I am playing a round and I am enjoying it because I have achieved my goals.

Alex: Is golf well-organized for children in the area? Álvaro: We are appropriately organized for golf, there are good schools and tournaments for children. Everything can be improved.

Alex: What do you have to do to become a champion like you? Álvaro: You have to be a devoted and disciplined person to become a good golfer. Hard work is the most important.

Alex: Are there other sports that you can combine golf with? Álvaro: Of course, practicing other sports like table tennis, surf or swimming is positive for golf. However, football is not advisable because of the risk of injuries.

Alex: Would you like your children to play golf? Álvaro: I wish! I would love them to play golf and enjoy this wonderful sport.

Alex: What abilities are important to practice this sport? Álvaro: You have to be very strong and disciplined mentally; besides, the stronger you are physically the better you will be able to play.

Alex: What is the most important hit for you? Álvaro: They are all important but the putt is probably the one that decides the final round. However, if the long game is not good then, the putt is not essential.

Alex: What hit do you have to practice more? Álvaro: The putt. ✪

LA VUELTA DEL TIGRE ——————— Los rumores y contra rumores, después de cada una de las tres cirugías de Tiger Woods, no fueron buenos presagios para su regreso al golf serio y, cuando se retiró del reciente Safeway Open describiendo su juego como "vulnerable", todos nos preguntamos si habíamos visto la última actuación del jugador más grande del mundo. Como siempre, los cínicos habituales, sugirieron que todas sus promesas acerca de su vuelta, eran, simplemente, una promoción para sus contratos.

Con todo este trasfondo, no es de extrañar que todo el mundo del golf se centrara en el Hero World Challenge, torneo de la PGA que organiza la propia fundación de Woods. El evento con unos escasos 18 jugadores de golf, tuvo lugar, en lo que podría describirse, como un campo de golf de vacaciones, en Las Bahamas. Después de tres operaciones de columna y un parón de unos dieciséis meses, ¿cómo actuaría Woods? Esa fue la pregunta que estaba en boca de todos, cuando el mejor jugador que el mundo haya visto y que se había desplomado a algún lugar alrededor del puesto 900 en el ranking mundial, salió del primer tee. Incluso si su juego estaba en buena forma, ¿cómo iba a lidiar con la situación mentalmente?

Los medios de comunicación de golf del mundo, por no mencionar a incontables fans, esperaron conteniendo la respiración, para ver si Tiger podía reproducir su fascinante forma de antaño.

Bueno, la respuesta a la pregunta era sí y no! Con ocho hoyos completados en la primera ronda, Woods había vuelto a su posición habitual en la parte superior de la tabla, pero sólo 10 hoyos más tarde que estaba en el último lugar de los 18 golfistas que participaban. Justin Rose tuvo que retirarse debido a una lesión, dejando a Woods jugando por su cuenta. Una exhibición absolutamente brillante de golf, y más importante aún, levantó cualquier duda o preocupación sobre su vuelta.

El domingo por la noche Tiger había completado los 72 hoyos y había registrado más birdies, 24 en total, que cualquiera de los otros jugadores, incluyendo máquinas de hacer birdies, como Bubba Watson y Dustin Johnson. Por desgracia, fueron intercalados con seis doble-bogeys, tres de los cuales se incluyeron en su ronda final de 76.

Todo el mundo era consciente de que su ausencia de la competición durante tanto tiempo, causaría estragos en el juego de Tiger. Pero las preguntas más importantes eran si su espalda

aguantaría cuatro días consecutivos de juego y si todavía quedaba algo de la magia que le hizo el jugador más importante del mundo. El gran interés por su juego puede deducirse del hecho de que Golf Channel informó que las cifras de visualización para el primer día fueron las más altas desde el Open Championship en Julio, mientras que la retransmisión del Viernes tuvo un aumento del 200% en comparación con las cifras del año pasado.

Como resumen de sus cuatro días Woods dijo: "Estoy satisfecho con todos los birdies, pero he tomado algunas decisiones erróneas, la bola se perdió en los lugares equivocados y cometí una gran cantidad de errores. Francamente, me siento extraño de estar caminando y jugando de nuevo en el campo. He estado practicando mientras conducía en un buggie, así que ahora tengo que recuperar mis piernas y recortar los errores” Cuando se le preguntó acerca del próximo año Woods estuvo algo reticente, pero dio algunas claves cuando respondió: "Me gustaría jugar un calendario completo el próximo año. Voy a tener un par de semanas de descanso, trabajaré con mi fisio para recuperar la fuerza que perdí cuando enfermé y poder reanudar mi carrera” Qué gran camino por delante para los aficionados al golf de todo el mundo. ¿Puede Tiger Woods ganar otro torneo, incluso otro torneo importante? La respuesta a estas preguntas se hará evidente durante los primeros meses de lo que promete ser un año muy emocionante.

VERGÜENZA EN EL COI En un cambio completo de tema, no creo que pudiera acumularse más ignominia en el Comité Olímpico Internacional, que hace poco tiempo sentenciaba que el golf en los Juegos Olímpicos de Río sería el catalizador para el crecimiento del juego en Sudamérica. Bueno, la realidad es algo distinta. El nuevo campo de golf construido para las Olimpiadas ya se está arruinando, ya que, aparentemente, los responsables de su mantenimiento no han cobrado por su labor. La suntuosa casa club sigue vacía y lo que es una sorpresa, con green fees a un precio de 75 € en un país donde los lugareños no ganan esa cantidad en una semana ni de lejos. Un final totalmente previsible para una idea salida del cerebro de un mosquito. ✪

En 1964 abrió sus puertas el Gran Meliá Don Pepe, entonces su nombre era Hotel Don Pepe, para convertirse en una leyenda viva de la ciudad de Marbella. Sería el primer hotel de Gran Lujo que se construía, con todo lo que ello conllevaba en la España de los 60. —————— Sin duda el hotel es uno de los emblemas, no sólo de la Costa del Sol, sino del turismo español en general, ¿Qué encuentran los viajeros en el Gran Meliá Don Pepe?

El hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe se construyó en 1964 por lo que es un hotel muy bien posicionado y reconocido. Los clientes que se alojan en GMDP vienen con unas altas expectativas y debemos ser capaces de superarlas; tenemos la suerte de contar con algo que yo personalmente valoro mucho, grandes profesionales con una amplia experiencia en el sector y personas jóvenes con nuevas ideas y con muchísimas ganas de aprender.

Tenemos clientes muy fieles que llevan viniendo desde hace más de 30 años y que actualmente vienen con sus nietos; esto nos motiva y enorgullece para seguir trabajando en la misma línea. Los clientes que se deciden por nuestro hotel no sólo encuentran un buen producto y servicio sino también un equipo que les hace vivir una experiencia inolvidable. ¿Qué supone el turismo de golf en el global de estancias de Gran Meliá Don Pepe?

En la zona en la que nos encontramos el golf es una actividad muy importante no sólo para la industria hotelera si no para el resto del sector. Como te comentaba antes el hotel GMDP tiene un muy buen posicionamiento en España y en mercados internacionales ya que se ha hecho y se hace actualmente un gran esfuerzo a nivel comercial y de marketing.

Ahora mismo estamos enfocados en 3 áreas principalmente. Cliente de alto poder adquisitivo. Estamos trabajando mer-

La globalización ha cambiado la forma de hacer negocios en cualquier parte del mundo. Pero, ¿cómo ha afectado este hecho a la manera de comercializar un hotel de 5*?

El turismo es probablemente uno de los sectores económicos más importantes y dinámicos en el mundo actual, su expansión y crecimiento están fuera de toda discusión. Muchos países han reconocido en las últimas décadas los beneficios que pueden aportar a la economía y al desarrollo.

El turismo internacional ha ganado terreno gracias a la globalización, ha habido una expansión considerable por la fácil accesibilidad que ahora se tiene a la información mundial. A homogeneidad cultural y esto, indudablemente, ha afectado directamente al turismo.

Esta globalización afecta directamente a hoteles como el GMDP ya que a la hora de comercializarlo tenemos acceso a mercados y clientes a los cuales antes no podíamos acceder tan fácilmente.

Igualmente el consumidor tiene mayor acceso e información sobre los lugares que visitará, las experiencias y destinos, haciéndolo mucho más competitivo y con mayor alcance. La globalización en el turismo ha conllevado el que cambie la forma de ver y hacer turismo.

Hoy en día, todos los profesionales, así como los organismos públicos encargados de promover el turismo en España, coinciden en que el principal problema y el objetivo a batir es la desestacionalización. ¿Cuáles cree usted que deberían ser las actuaciones a llevar a cabo?

Para ser capaces de desestacionalizar un destino se deben llevar a cabo acciones desde los gobiernos regionales y administraciones locales con la ayuda de la empresa privada.

Hay que ser creativos en lugares como el nuestro que siempre han dependido mucho del segmento de sol y playa.

Debemos enfocar nuestros esfuerzos de promoción y comerciales en hacer ver al cliente que Marbella y la Costa del Sol tienen mucho más que ofrecer.

Por poner ejemplos hay varias líneas de actuación que nos ayudarían a desestacionalizar la zona: segmento de golf, ser capaces de dar a conocer las posibilidades de la zona para congresos, incentivos, etc.. y no olvidar el turismo de bienestar y salud.

Por último y no menos importante, pero si menos conocido, mencionar el crecimiento que está teniendo en los últimos años el segmento de equipos deportivos en nuestra zona.

Las nuevas plataformas en internet dedicadas al hospedaje, están cambiando el paradigma del turismo. Según usted, ¿cómo puede afectar esta mutación turística al sector hotelero?

Los cambios que está viviendo el sector

turístico son el resultado de un proceso en el que llevamos inmersos muchos años. Sin embargo, es ahora cuando empiezan a manifestarse y afectar con mayor claridad a destinos y empresas turísticas.

Las empresas hoteleras deberían estar ya más que adaptadas a este cambio en la forma de viajar del turista. El consumidor actual tiene motivaciones de compra muy variadas y tiene la suerte de que puede conseguir la información de los destinos y hoteles con tan solo encender el ordenador o su móvil.

Es por esto por lo que las empresas debemos ser capaces de detectar esas necesidades y satisfacerlas. Existen una serie de tendencias claves para enfocar este cambio: big data, marketing digital, entorno móvil, internet de las cosas, etc.

Hay que tener muy en cuenta que el consumidor actual está conectado antes de hacer su reserva, durante la misma y después de su estancia. Perfeccionar el rendimiento de los canales digitales de un hotel es fundamental para llegar al cliente con un mensaje en tiempo y forma adecuados. ¿Qué importancia tiene para usted saber manejar las redes sociales y las herramientas virtuales para captar visitas? ¿A qué se enfrenta el profesional con el ritmo actual?

Las redes sociales están empezando a formar parte de la planificación de un viaje.

Hoy en día los propios usuarios son los que se mueven por la red en busca de los mejores destinos y los mejores alojamientos. Este cambio en el paradigma del negocio turístico hace imprescindible que las empresas del sector utilicen todas las herramientas que la red pone a su disposición.

Un cliente potencial no es un mero buscador de información. Una de las características más importantes del usuario digital actual es la interacción, la búsqueda constante de referencias en otros usuarios.

Aquí es donde entran en juego las redes sociales, que nos ofrecen una plataforma para que nuestros usuarios se acerquen a nosotros de manera informal e inicien conversaciones en torno a nuestra marca.

Gran Meliá Don Pepe opened its doors in 1964, back then it was Don Pepe Hotel and it became a living legend in the city of Marbella. It was the first Luxury Hotel built and this really meant something important in Spain in the 60`s. The Gran Meliá Don Pepe Hotel was built in 1964 and it is a well-located and well-known hotel. What is the main course of action when commercializing Gran Meliá Don Pepe?

As I was telling you before, Gran Meliá Don Pepe hotel is well positioned in Spain and in international markets as we have made and we are still making a great effort in terms of commerce and marketing.

Right now we are focused on three main areas. High purchasing power customers. We are working on traditional and emerging markets in order to find travel agencies and tour operators who work with luxury tourism exclusively.

Important growth online with our main sales channel Melia.com and reinforcing connections with our usual partners in the sector.

Globalization has changed the way business is done in every part of the world. However, how has this affected the way you commercialize a 5* hotel?

Tourism is probably one of the most important and dynamic economic sectors in today’s world; its expansion and growth are out of the question. In recent years many countries have accepted the benefits of tourism on the economy and development.

There is a need for creativity in places like ours which have depended on sun and beach tourism too much. We should focus our efforts of promotion and commercialization to make the customer see that Marbella and the Costa del Sol have much more to offer.

Globalization has caused cultural homogeneity and this, undoubtedly, has affected tourism directly. This globalization affects hotels like Gran Meliรก Don Pepe as we have access to markets and customers easily that we did not have before when commercializing the hotel.

Likewise, the consumer has better access and information about the places to visit, experiences and destinations, being more competitive and having greater scope. Globalization in tourism has meant a different way of seeing and developing tourism.

Nowadays, professionals as well as governing bodies responsible for promoting tourism in Spain agree that the main problem and objective to achieve is diversification away from seasonal tourism. What course of action is there to take?

In order to be able to diversify a destination away from seasonal tourism, course of action needs to come from regional and local governments with the help of private companies.

To give you some examples, there are several course of action that would help diversification away from seasonal tourism: the golf sector, ability to make the possibility of congresses, business trips, etc... known, without forgetting wellness and health tourism.

Last but not least, although it is not so well-known, I would like to mention the growth of the sport team sector in our area in recent years.

New internet platforms for hotel bookings have changed the paradigm of tourism. In your opinion, how can these changes in tourism affect the hotel industry?

The changes that are currently taking place in the tourism sector are the result of a process we have been embedded within for many years. However, now they are beginning to appear and affect destinations and tourism companies clearly.

Hotel companies should be better adapted to this change in tourist travelling.

The current consumer has various purchase motivations and can get information about destinations and hotels easily with a computer or a mobile. This is the reason why companies must detect and satisfy these needs. There are a series of key issues needed to be focused on for this change: big data, digital marketing, mobile environment, internet of things, etc.

We have to think that the current consumer is connected before he carries out his/her booking, during the booking and after his/her stay. Perfecting hotel digital channels performance is basic to reach a customer with messages the appropriate way and timing.

Social networks are starting to be part of trip planning. Nowadays, users themselves surf on the net looking for the best destinations and the best accommodation. This change in the paradigm of tourism business creates the essential need in companies of this field to use all the available tools in the net.

The potential customer is just an information seeker. Interaction and the constant search for other users’ references is one of the main characteristics of the current digital user. It is here that social networks play their part; they offer a platform for our users to contact us in an informal way and initiate conversations about our brand. âœŞ

Carismático, enérgico, incombustible y amante de los placeres que le ofrece la vida, siempre ha mantenido que todo lo que tiene se lo debe al golf. Con la intención de devolver al deporte algo de lo que le ha dado, Miguel Angel inició en 2014 su proyecto más personal, Miguel Ángel Jiménez Golf Academy, a la que amablemente ha invitado a Golf Circus para entrevistarle.

“Mi primer año en el Circuito profesional fue en el año 89, entonces jugábamos con materiales muy diferentes. Ahora jugamos con titanio, bolas duras y la cosa ha cambiado mucho.

Hoy el nivel de preparación física de los jugadores es el de un atleta de élite. En los últimos 10 años he entrenado más que en toda mi vida.”

—————— La prensa norteamericana le etiquetó como el tipo más interesante del golf mundial. Y es que usted tiene una peculiar forma de contar las cosas que extraña sobre todo en un deportista. ¿Por qué cree que es?

Bueno, yo no me pongo calificativos, los ponen los demás, pero sospecho que es por mi forma de ser tan directa. Siempre he procurado mostrarme como soy en todas las facetas de mi vida.

Me gusta fumar, beber una copa de vino y disfruto compitiendo, ese soy yo. ¿Y qué tal se ve la vida después de los 50?

Pues tengo que decirte que prácticamente igual, sigo disfrutando de todo lo que me gusta. En mi faceta como jugador, evidentemente, cada vez jugando menos en el Circuito regular y más en el Circuito Champion, donde hay mucha competencia. Se juegan tres vueltas en los torneos a excepción de los Majors y hay 15 ó 20 jugadores con posibilidades mientras que en el Circuito regu-

lar esas mismas posibilidades las tienen 90 ó 100 jugadores con lo que la competencia es muy dura. Sin olvidar por supuesto que la juventud es un grado y se nota enormemente sobre todo en la pegada desde el tee.

Si no estoy mal informado son 27 años en el golf y desde entonces las cosas han cambiado mucho, los materiales, los campos de golf, ¿es diferente la manera de jugar?

No, exactamente son 28. Mi primer año en el Circuito profesional fue en el año 89, entonces jugábamos con materiales muy diferentes. Ahora jugamos con titanio, bolas duras y la cosa ha cambiado mucho. Hoy el nivel de preparación física de los jugadores es el de un atleta de élite. En los últimos 10 años he entrenado más que en toda mi vida.

Se podría decir que usted lo ha conseguido todo, ¿Qué le mueve cada día para jugar al golf? ¿La gloria? ¿El dinero?

Rotundamente, la competición. Te diré más, no me gusta volar, no me gustan los hoteles y lo hago porque me mueve el afán de competir y superarme a mí mismo. El día que vea que no puedo ganar lo dejaré.

Si le concedieran el deseo de ganar cualquier Major, ¿Cuál elegiría?

Sin duda, el Open. Para mí es el torneo de torneos y si tuviera que ganar un sólo torneo sería ese. ¿Qué le queda por hacer en el golf a Miguel Angel Jiménez?

Ganar un Major, o unos cuantos. (ríe) ¿Qué tal la Miguel Golf Academy? Supongo que trabajar con los niños es una experiencia gratificante.

Tenemos 120 niños todas las semanas en diferentes categorías y el equipo que trabaja con ellos hace un gran trabajo. La expe-

riencia es fantástica. También tenemos posibilidades para que el quiera aprender o perfeccionar su juego pueda hacerlo con todo tipo de facilidades de clases y horarios.

En cuanto al campo son 9 hoyos pares 3 en el que se necesitan golpes precisos y mucha concentración en el juego corto que es la base del aprendizaje. El estado del campo es magnífico, los greenes ruedan muy bien gracias a la elección de la hierba, muy adecuada para este clima. ¿Qué podemos esperar de Miguel Angel Jiménez para el 2017? ¿Cuáles son sus retos?

Ha sido una decisión meditada, el año pasado jugué la mitad en el Circuito Europeo y la mitad en el Champion y los resultados no fueron buenos. Así que en el 2017 jugaré 2/3 partes en el Champion y lo demás en el Circuito Europeo.

With the intention to return some of this to sport, he started his most personal project in 2014, Miguel Angel JimÊnez Academy. He has kindly asked Golf Circus to interview him.

“My first year in the professional Circuit was in 1989, and we used to play with different materials then. Now we play with titanium, hard balls and things have changed a lot. Nowadays, the level of physical preparation is that of elite athletes. In the last ten years, I have trained more than in all my life.”

————— American press labeled you as the most interesting man in world golf. You have a peculiar way of talking about things which is not common in a sportsman. Why do you think this is?

Well, I do not label myself, others do but I suspect this is caused by my direct manner. I have always shown my real self in all aspects of life. I like smoking, drinking a glass of wine and I enjoy competing. That is my real self.

How do you see life after 50?

I have to tell you that just the same. I still enjoy everything I like. As a player, I play less in the regular Circuit obviously and more in the Champion Circuit, where there is a lot of competition. We play three rounds in tournaments with the exception of the Majors and there are 15 or 20 players who have a chance; whereas in the regular Circuit 90 or 100 players have this same chance; so competition is very tough. Obviously, we cannot forget that youth is a rank in its self and this shows tremendously, especially at the hits from the tee.

If I am well informed you have been in golf for 27 years and since then a lot of things have changed, materials, golf courses, is playing different?

No, it isn’t. It has been 28. My first year in the professional Circuit was in 1989, and we used to play with different materials then. One can say that you have achieved everything, what moves you to play golf every day? Glory? Money?

Competition, absolutely! I can tell you more. I don’t like flying, I don’t like hotels. What moves me is the eagerness to compete and self-development. The day I see I cannot win I will give up.

If you could win any Major, which would you choose?

The Open, no doubt. For me this is THE tournament of all tournaments and if I could win only one this is the one I would choose.

What is there for Miguel Angel Jiménez to do?

Win a Major, or some. (he laughs) How is the Miguel Angel Golf Academy going? I suppose working with children must be a rewarding experience.

We have 120 children every week in different categories and the team that works with them is doing a great job. It is a fantastic experience. We also offer the possibility of learning or improving the game with all kind of classes and timetables.

Concerning the golf course, it has 9 holes 3 par where you need precise hits and high concentration in the short game as the basis of learning. The golf course is in fantastic condition, the greens roll well thanks to the choice of grass, appropriate for this kind of weather.

What can we expect from Miguel Angel Jiménez in 2017?

What are your challenges?

It has been a deeply considered decision. Last year I played half of the time in the European Circuit and half in the Champion Circuit and results were good. So, in 2017 I am going to play two thirds of the time in the Champion Circuit and the rest in the European Circuit. ✪

Un referente en césped artificial

La industria del césped artificial ha experimentado un crecimiento exponencial en los últimos años que tiene su origen principalmente en la elevada conciencia medioambiental, la necesidad de ahorro de los recursos hídricos y la intención de las empresas de minimizar los costes de mantenimiento de sus instalaciones. Con estos antecedentes, Ernesto Mira fundó en 2007 Best Garden, una empresa dedicada a la instalación y suministro de césped artificial de Gama Premium para clientes, particulares y empresas.

Best Garden es distribuidor de césped artificial específico para campos de golf y es también instalador de césped artificial en el ámbito del golf. Sólo estamos especializados en césped artificial aunque también hemos lanzado este año un nuevo sistema para los caminos de los campos llamado SGP Synthetic Golf Path, que hacen que los caminos se mantengan mejor, sean más vistosos, y puedan ser patrocinados por marcas comerciales, aparte de otras ventajas, como por ejemplo, que evitan la emisión de vapores que contienen metales pesados cuando se calientan por la acción del sol, en contraposición con otro tipo de caminos como los de caucho.

Nuestros productos son sostenibles, además de tener otras ventajas. ¿Qué aplicaciones tiene el césped artificial?

Dentro del mundo del golf, muchas. Se puede instalar en zonas verdes comunes o ajardinadas allí donde el crecimiento del natural es complicado debido a que son zonas muy transitadas o sombrías. Ya hemos realizado varias de este tipo en

clubes de golf como por ejemplo, Club de Golf Guadalhorce o Real Club de Golf Guadalmina o Aloha Golf, por nombrar algunos.

La instalación de Tee Lines de césped específico en el campo de prácticas permite que el mantenimiento del natural se haga con el suficiente tiempo y cuidado.

También se puede instalar este césped en ciertos tees realizando lo que se denomina un Tee Box. Del mismo modo, la implementación en el putting green hace que el de hierba natural esté siempre en perfecto estado o en zonas delicadas, por ejemplo, zonas de prácticas o de enseñanza. Se pueden realizar también greens de recepción en el range haciéndolo mucho más atractivo para que los jugadores puedan tirar con una idea clara y mejorada de los golpes al objetivo.

Háblanos de los Greens y Pitch and Putt artificiales.

En Best Garden estamos a la vanguardia en el desarrollo de productos, trabajamos para multinacionales líderes en el sector y a nivel materia prima, desarrollamos pro-

yectos con una alta especialización en la construcción. Ambas cosas creo que son muy importantes.

Ahora estamos creando un nuevo sistema para putting greens que hace que la superficie absorba el impacto simulando un green natural. Se trata de una basa viscoelástica con efecto memoria que se instala debajo del césped para greens. ¿Cómo es el proceso desde el comienzo hasta que finalmente se hace la instalación?

Los proyectos conllevan diferentes fases: Evaluación del solar o espacio para la instalación.

Anteproyecto. Aunque es cierto que encarece en cierta medida el precio, si el cliente lo requiere lo hacemos. No es estrictamente necesario y básicamente define de antemano cómo será el green, definiendo cotas, pendientes, tamaño exacto y paisajismo del entorno si se desea. También podemos realizar un modelado en 3D con el resultado final.

Definición de objetivos: ejecución de un Pitch and Putt, un Putting Green o instalación de hoyos cortos.

Ejecución del Proyecto Hoy en día todos y por supuesto también los campos de golf están muy comprometidos con la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente, ¿Qué impacto tiene el césped artificial sobre éste?

El impacto es muy bajo. El césped artificial es un producto respetuoso con el medio-ambiente. A nivel práctico el Cesped artificial ahorra agua, ya que no necesita ser regado, así como ningún tipo de mantenimiento. No usa fertilizante.

A nivel fabricación, los niveles de emisiones a la atmosfera se encuentran por debajo de los máximos permitidos por decreto 883/1975 y por tanto cumplen con los valores límites de emisión VLE de la legislación vigente.

El césped artificial no contiene metales pesados y es un material totalmente inocuo para el ser humano. ¿En qué se diferencian los Tee Lines de Best Garden de otros que hay en el mercado?

Los Tee Lines pueden ser de diferentes calidades. Nosotros siempre optamos por

la mejor calidad. Para eso, las fibras deben estar hechas con poliamidas (PA) y de ninguna manera de Polipropileno (PP).

No obstante, la clave es hacer un producto que tenga una buena resistencia pero que la moqueta no quede demasiado dura. Es decir, el palo de golf debe pasar a través de la bola aportando sensación de suavidad. Para eso, las especificaciones han sido desarrolladas por expertos en producción y profesionales de golf. Best Garden Golf no vende productos para satisfacer sólo la necesidad de “pegar bolas”, sino que apostamos por las sensaciones a la hora de practicar.

Sensaciones que son superiores a las de otros productos, es este caso, otros Tee Lines o alfombrillas con base de caucho que no son idóneas para entrenar.

Otro aspecto importante para que el Tee Line esté en perfecto estado es utilizar la cantidad adecuada de arena de sílice en el recebado. La carga excesiva endurece la superficie, esto es un error común. Solo se consigue un recebado idóneo a través de ensayos. ¿Qué otras aplicaciones y qué futuro puede tener el césped artificial en el mundo del golf?

Nosotros pensamos que el césped artificial va a acercar mucho al jugador al entrenamiento fuera del campo. Con los productos que se están creando, cualquier persona puede tener una pequeña

sala de entrenamiento en casa e incluso si se lo puede permitir, en su propio jardín puede tener sus propios pares 3. Desde los 40 ó 50 metros cuadrados se puede realizar un putting green en condiciones óptimas. No sería ninguna “osadía” afirmar que en un futuro no muy lejano puedan realizarse greens artificiales en campos de golf. Son las zonas más delicadas de mantener y se están consiguiendo calidades que mejoran al natural tanto para patear como para aprochar. ¿A quién no le gusta jugar en greens perfectos?

Los ranges de los clubes actuales, no nos cansamos de decirlo y comentarlo con Gerentes y Directores de campos, deben contar con greens a diferentes distancias y tamaños para facilitar el entrenamiento y hacerlo más entretenido. No es costoso instalar greens dentro del range y el socio lo agradecería.

También algunos colegios están tomando iniciativas a nivel golf. El césped artificial puede acercar el golf a los alumnos y hacer futuros golfistas.

Con respecto a los hoteles, cada vez más, se están desarrollando putting greenes en las zonas de ocio. Y también las empresas están tomando iniciativas de este tipo en sus oficinas. Los edificios de oficinas son un buen lugar para instalar césped artificial, siempre y cuando la filosofía de la empresa lo permita. Ya hemos realizado putting greens en las oficinas de varias empresas.

Best Garden is a distributor of artificial grass specifically for golf courses and it also installs artificial grass in the field of golf. We are only specialized in artificial grass although we have launched a new system for golf paths this year called SGP (Synthetic Golf Path) which improves path maintenance, making them more attractive and allowing them to be sponsored by commercial brands; apart from other advantages, like preventing heavy metal vapor emissions when heated by the sun in contrast to other kinds of paths made of rubber. Our products are sustainable, as well as having other advantages.

What other uses does artificial grass have?

It has many in the area of golf. It can be installed in communal green areas or gardens where natural growth is difficult because they are very busy or shady.

We have already carried out similar works of this type in golf courses such as Guadalhorce Golf Club, Guadalmina Real Golf Club or Aloha Golf, to name some.

The installation of specific grass in Tee

Lines in the training field allows maintenance of natural grass with enough time and care. This kind of grass can also be installed in certain tees in what is called a Tee Box. Likewise, the implementation in the putting green lets natural grass always be in perfect condition or in fragile areas such as the training or practice fields. Reception greens can also be placed in the range in order to make them more attractive for players who can have a much clearer and improved idea of the hits approaching the objective.

New improved products are created every year. In Best Garden we are at the forefront developing new products.

We work for leading multinational companies in the field and concerning raw materials, we develop highly specialized projects for construction. I think both things are very important.

Now we are creating a new system for putting greens that makes the surface absorb the impact simulating a natural green. This is a visco elastic foam base that has a memory effect and that is installed under the grass for greens.

What is the process like from the beginning to the final installation?

The project entails different phases: Assessment of site or place of installation Draft. Although it raises the price, we do it if the client requires it. It is not really necessary but it basically defines what the green will be like beforehand, defining level, slope, exact size and landscape gardening if wanted. We can also arrange a 3D simulation with the final result.

Nowadays everybody, including golf courses is committed to environment sustainability, what is the impact of artificial grass on the environment?

It is a very low impact. Artificial grass is environmentally-friendly. On a practical level artificial grass saves water as it does not need watering and it is maintenance free. Fertilizers are not needed.

On a manufacturing level, atmosphere emissions are under the levels allowed by law 883/1975 and therefore obey the emission limit values VLE of the current law.

What is the difference between Tee Lines by Best Garden and others in the market?

Tee Lines can have different qualities.

We always choose best quality. For this reason, fibers must be made of polyamide (PA) and in no way of polypropylene (PP).

However, the key is to make a product highly resistant but not too hard. That is, the club must go through the ball providing a smooth feeling. For this reason, specifications have been developed by production experts and golf professionals. Best Garden Golf does not sell products to only satisfy the need to “hit balls” but we invest in feelings when you are practicing. These feelings are better than those provided by other products, in this case, other Tee Lines or rubber based rugs that are not suitable for training.

Another important aspect to have a Tee Line in perfect condition lies in the appropriate quantity of silica sand used when filling. Excessive quantity makes a hard surface and this is a common mistake. A successful filling is only achieved with testing.

What other uses are there and what is the future of artificial grass in golf?

We think artificial grass is going to bring the player closer to the training out of the golf course. With these recently created new products anyone can have a small training room at home or even have your own 3 par in your own garden if you can afford it. In 40 or 50 square metres a

putting green can be carried out in good condition. It wouldn’t be daring to say that artificial greens will be carried out in golf courses in the near future. They are the most delicate to keep and we are getting better quality products that improve in their natural state for both hitting with the putt and approaching. Who doesn’t like playing in perfect greens?

We continue telling Managers and Golf Course Directors that ranges in golf courses should have different distance and different size greens to facilitate and make training more attractive. It is not expensive to install greens in the range and the members would appreciate it. Some schools are also taking the initiative in golf. Artificial grass can get students closer to golf and make future golfers.

Regarding hotels, more and more, are carrying out greens in leisure areas. Also, companies are doing so in offices. Office buildings are a good place to install artificial grass provided that the philosophy of the company allows it. We have already carried out putting greens in offices in several companies. ✪

Sus suelos son de arcillas calcáreas sobre las que se asientan capas arcillo-arenosas entremezcladas con cantos rodados. Los viñedos empleados para Naiades se encuentran en terrenos más arenosos con canto rodado en superficie.

Si hablamos de la Crianza, es necesario resaltar sus barricas 100% roble francés de tostado ligero y medio. La edad de las barricas está entre 1 a 3 años y sus volúmenes de 225, 500 y 600 litros…

—————— Ya ha tenido experiencia de restauración en hoteles. Cuéntenos un poco de su trayectoria.

Pues ya han pasado 18 años desde que empecé en mi ciudad natal, Zaragoza; aunque no tarde mucho en irme a recorrer muchas zonas de la geografía española para empaparme de su gastronomía.

Por el camino recorrí distintas marcas y concepto de hoteles, tanto nacionales como internacionales lo que me ha hecho madurar y tener una visión muy versátil de lo que requiere la dirección de restauración de un hotel. La verdad es que siempre he estado unido al mundo de los hoteles. Los grandes chefs con los que he trabajado me han aportado la técnica, la disciplina y la capacidad de esfuerzo que se necesita dentro de la cocina, pero la exigencia que requieren los hoteles de lujo es lo que ha terminado de forjar mi carácter como cocinero.

El restaurante es heredero de la alta cocina vasca, ¿Cómo es la cocina de T-Bone Grill?

La cocina que se hace en T-Bone se basa en el producto de temporada y en la cocción más acertada de cada uno de ellos.

Trabajamos con los mejores productos de temporada, carnes, pescados y verduras, lo que aporta a la cocina de T-Bone una calidad de partida independientemente de su elaboración. Otra característica de la personalidad propia del restaurante es que desde hace un par de años, estamos trabajando en crear sinergias entre cocina al vacío y los toques que aporta la parrilla de carbón vegetal y en el que los resultados son francamente atractivos.

Los restaurantes de los hoteles tienen un claro hándicap y es atraer al público ajeno al hotel, ¿Cómo lo lográis?

En ciudades como Madrid o Barcelona, la dificultad de posicionar los restaurantes en hoteles ya hace tiempo que desapareció, es más, me atrevería a decir que después de una época donde la gente evitaba comer dentro de un hotel, la tendencia actual es la contraria. Creo que el cambio de actitud del público ha sido gracias a que los hoteles también han cambiado su política con respecto a sus puntos de restauración.

En Marbella todavía hay trabajo por hacer en este sentido. Para superar este hándicap intentamos transmitir y enseñar a

nuestros clientes la personalidad propia de T-Bone que es independiente de la personalidad y de la vida del hotel. ¿Cuál es el plato estrella de T-Bone Grill?

Pues después de 4 años de la puesta en marcha y con una línea ascendente ya podemos decir que hay una serie de platos que nos identifican y nos diferencian claramente de la competencia; en estos platos yo metería nuestro tartar de atún rojo, las ostras a la brasa, jarrete de ternera lechal cocinado durante 16 horas, o nuestra chuleta de raza Frisona madurada 30 días. ¿Tenéis una carta fija o la cambiáis a lo largo de la temporada?

Como trabajamos con mucho producto de temporada, a parte de nuestra selección de platos de la carta, nuestro responsable de sala siempre tiene para ofrecer una serie de alternativas fuera de carta.

Nuestro concepto de restaurante está enfocado en un cliente que se sienta cómodo en repetir la experiencia varias veces a la semana y para llegar a este punto de fidelización tenemos siempre que ofrecer mucho dinamismo en la oferta.

­———— You have already had experience in hotel restaurants. Tell us a bit about your professional career.

It has been 18 years since I started in my hometown, Zaragoza. However, it did not take me long to leave to travel around different areas of Spain to immerse myself in their gastronomy. On the way, I worked for different chains and different types of hotels, both national and international. This helped me mature and have a versatile vision of the requirements of hotel restaurant management.

Actually, I have always been involved in the hotel industry. The great chefs that I have worked with have taught me the technique, discipline and ability to sacrifice needed in the kitchen.

Nevertheless, the demanding requirements of luxury hotels have forged my character as a chef.

The restaurant is the successor of Basque haute cuisine, how would you describe food at T-Bone Grill?

The food cooked at T-Bone is based on seasonal products and the most appropriate method of cooking each of them.

We work with the best seasonal products, meat, fish and vegetables and that 80 | GC#21

provides T-Bone with an advantageous starting point independent from its food preparation.

One of the personal characteristics of the restaurant is the creation of synergy developments using vacuum cooking and the touch of charcoal grill. We have been working on this for a couple of years and the results are really attractive.

Restaurant hotels have a clear disadvantage and that is, attracting customers unconnected to the hotel. How do you manage this?

In cities like Madrid or Barcelona, the difficulty of locating restaurants in hotels disappeared a long time ago.

Moreover, I would dare to say that after a time when people avoided eating in hotels, the actual trend is the opposite. I think that this change of attitude in the general public is thanks to a hotel change of policy regarding restaurant businesses.

In this sense, in Marbella there is still work to do. In order to overcome this disadvantage we try to communicate and show our customers T-Bone’s own essence, which is independent from hotel life and personality.

What is the star dish at T-Bone Grill?

After four years since we started and ever increasing, we can say there are certain dishes that identify and differentiate us clearly from competition; in these dishes I would include our red tuna tartar, grilled oysters, veal shank cooked for 16 hours and our T-bone steak from Frisona beef matured for 30 days.

Do you have a set menu or does it change during the season?

As we work with seasonal products, apart from the dishes on the menu our head waiter offers different alternatives which are not included. Our restaurant concept is focused on making customers feel happy to repeat the experience several times a week and thus, to cultivate customers’ loyalty we need to present a very dynamic offer. ✪

RETURN OF THE TIGER ———————— Rumours and counter-rumours, following each of Tiger Woods three back surgeries, did not bode well for his return to serious golf and, when he withdrew from the recent Safeway Open describing his game as “vulnerable”, we all wondered if we had seen the last of arguably the world’s greatest ever player. The usual cynics were, as always, on hand to suggest that all his promises about a return were simply a promotion for his new and existing, hugely lucrative, endorsement contracts.

With all that in the background, and despite being played opposite the Australian PGA Championship and another big tournament in South Africa, is it any wonder the entire golfing world was focused on a total non-event, boasting a meagre 18-golfers, which took place, on what might best be described as a holiday golf course, in the Bahamas recently? The reason was very simple; it signalled the return to competitive golf of Tiger Woods. Following three spinal operations and a lay-off of some sixteen months how would Woods perform? That was the question on everybody’s lips as possibly the best player the world has ever seen, who had plummeted to somewhere in the region of 900 in the Golf World Rankings, took to the first tee.

Even if his game was in good to reasonable shape how would he cope mentally?

The world’s golfing media, not to mention countless fans, waited with baited breath to see if Tiger could reproduce his spellbinding form of yesteryear. Well the answer to the question was both yes and no! With eight holes completed in the opening round Woods had resumed his usual position on top of the leader board yet just 10 holes later he was propping up that same leader board in last spot of the 18 golfers taking part. Justin Rose had to withdraw after one round, due to injury, leaving Woods first out playing on his own which was a remarkable sight but not as remarkable as the bogey-free 65 he recorded for the round. An absolutely brilliant display of golf, and more importantly, with not a grimace in sight to raise any concerns about his back.

By Sunday evening Tiger had completed the 72-holes and had recorded more birdies (24 in all) than any of the other players including such birdie machines as Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. Unfortunately, although understandably, these were interspersed with six double-bogeys, three of which were included in his final round 76, together with a scattering of bogeys.

Everybody knew that absence from competitive golf for so long would cause rustiness in Tiger’s game and so it proved but the more important questions were whether his back would stand up to four consecutive day’s play and if there was still evidence of the golfing magic which made him the leading player 82 | GC#21

in the world (by some distance) for so long. With both answers being in the affirmative the golfing future of Tiger Woods became more certain which is brilliant news for anybody with the slightest interest in the game. General interest regarding his playing may be gleaned from the fact that the Golf Channel reported that viewing figures for the first day were the highest since the Open Championship in July while Friday’s telecast attracted an increase of 200% when compared with the tournament viewing figures last year.

Summing up his four days Woods said, “I am pleased with all the birdies but I made some poor decisions, missed in the wrong spots and made an awful lot of mistakes. I made two sevens on par fives today, made three double- bogeys on the 18th alone during the week and you can’t do that. Frankly it feels weird to be walking and playing again. I have been practising while driving in a cart so now I need to get my legs back and cut out the errors.”

When questioned about next year Woods was understandably somewhat reticent but gave some indicators when he answered, “I would like in my heart of hearts to play a full schedule next year. I’ll have a couple of weeks off, work with my physios, get a little stronger, put weight back on that I lost when I got sick, and then really access, ‘okay, what’s the plan? How much we can play on the west coast, how much we can play in Florida leading to the Masters, what is the plan leading to Augusta?’

Just like it always is, but this one’s going to be a little bit different because, quite frankly, I haven’t done it in a while. So we’re going to be smart about it.”

What a treat lies ahead for golf fans the world over. Can Tiger Woods win another tournament, even another major tournament? The answer to those questions will become apparent during the opening months of what promises to be a very exciting year.

SHAME ON THE IOC In a complete change of subject may I pile some more ignominy onto the International Olympic Committee who, only a short time ago, were pontificating that golf at the Olympic Games in Rio would be the catalyst for the growth of the game in South America. Well the reality is somewhat different which comes as little surprise. The spanking new golf course built for the Olympics is already going to rack and ruin as, apparently, those responsible for its maintenance have not been paid for some time. The sumptuous clubhouse remains empty and bare, which again is little surprise, with green fees priced at €75 in a country where locals would be over the moon to earn that amount in a week. A totally foreseeable end to a hare brained idea. ✪
