En España, el golf, primero fue una actividad sólo reservada para unos pocos, la élite si se quiere, más tarde, los triunfos de Severiano Ballesteros auparon al golf a una cierta popularidad y, pasados unos años, apareció su perfil turístico que, en zonas como La Costa del Sol, se destapó como un potente desestacionalizador.

Con más de 300 campos de golf y siendo el segundo país del mundo tras EE.UU, con más visitantes para la práctica de este deporte, creo que llega un momento para la reflexión, a tenor de los datos que ofrece la RFEG, con un descenso en el número de licencias en términos porcentuales del 2,7% en el año 2015.

En la actualidad, la industria del golf se encuentra en una encrucijada por diversos motivos pero esta reflexión se centra en uno de ellos. Y es que me parece que el golf ha evolucionado a un ritmo muy diferente al de las costumbres de sus practicantes.

En la actualidad el ritmo de vida deja poco tiempo para “hobbies” y en esto el golf está en clara desventaja frente a otros deportes. Una partida de 18 hoyos, entre una cosa y otra, necesita de, entre 5 y 7 horas de nuestro tiempo libre y disponer de ese tiempo hoy en día está al alcance de muy pocos.

Actividades deportivas como tenis, pádel, ciclismo, running, etc, son más asequibles, en detrimento del golf.

Precio, tiempo, reglas de etiqueta, uso de móviles, son cuestiones que hay que resolver para adaptar el golf y que su práctica no suponga un esfuerzo extra.

En la actualidad se están estudiando fórmulas para combatir esta circunstancia, de hecho, el European Tour ha incluido en su calendario, el “World Super 6 Perth”, en Australia, un torneo en el que el último día se jugará a seis hoyos en vez de a 18. Esto puede ser una solución ya que cada campo tiene tres recorridos de seis hoyos, acortando tiempo necesario para cada ronda, a la vez que su precio.

Veremos cómo funciona el experimento, pero hacen falta muchas más ideas y recursos para mantener a los actuales practicantes y captar nuevos.

—————— La Academia Jack Nicklaus de Finca Cortesín, es una de las más prestigiosas del mundo. El método ideado por Jack Nicklaus nace de su propia experiencia pero, no como jugador, sino como alumno. Él se dio cuenta de la dificultad, sobre todo cuando alcanzas un determinado nivel de juego, para corregir tus propios errores. En La Academia Nicklaus de Finca Cortesin, el jugador tiene la posibilidad de sortear ese escollo.

Con un método de trabajo individualizado para cada alumno, la escuela y sus responsables, Ricardo Jiménez y Rubén Holgado, trabajan todos los aspectos del juego. El técnico, el físico, el mental, un adecuado equipamiento y la parte táctica, como base para mejorar, no sólo técnicamente, sino con el objetivo de trasladar todo lo aprendido al campo.

Otra de las vertientes de la Academia Jack Nicklaus en Finca Cortesín es, ayudar al alumno a entender las causas y efectos de sus errores. Ayudados de la más alta tecnología, con cámaras de video, para ver el vuelo de la bola, el alumno aprende los movimientos correctos para que su swing funcione. Ricardo Jiménez, Director de instrucción de la escuela, nos cuenta, “hay muchos jugadores que nunca se han visto, y si lo han hecho no han analizado su swing, y quedan verdaderamente impactados”.

OBJETIVO: MEJORAR TU JUEGO Con la filosofía que llevó a Jack Nicklaus a ganar 18 majors y a convertirse para muchos, en el mejor jugador de golf de la historia, Nicklaus, instruye a los jugadores enseñándoles que, “El éxito depende casi totalmente de la eficacia con que aprenda a manejar a dos adversarios: el campo y usted mismo”. Con 23 escuelas repartidas por los resorts más exclusivos del mundo, una de ellas está en Golf Finca Cortesín. El resort, ubicado entre Marbella y Sotogrande, cuenta entre sus instalaciones con un campo de golf diseño de Cabell B. Robinson, catalogado como uno de los mejores de España.

Rubén Holgado, instructor de la Academia, también quiso resaltar, que “el 95% de los jugadores que recibimos en la Academia Jack Nicklaus de Finca Cortesín, no tienen el equipamiento adecuado”, “tiene palos que no se acomodan a su swing, por lo que desarrollan gestos técnicos erróneos”. En el Oficial Fitting Center de Taylor Made, los instructores y profesionales ayudan a confeccionar el palo adecuado a las características del jugador.

Todo en la Academia de Finca Cortesín está diseñado con el objetivo de que el jugador mejore a través del trabajo individualizado, en el que, es la escuela la que se adapta a cada jugador con paquetes que van desde 1 hora hasta 20, combinado con clases en el campo.

The method created by Jack Nicklaus originates from his own experience, but not as a player but as a student. He became aware of the difficulty to correct you own errors when you reach a certain level in the game. At Jack Nicklaus Academy, the player has the opportunity to overcome this obstacle.

Using an individualized work method for each student, the school and its trainers Ricardo Jiménez and Rubén Holgado, deal with all aspects of the game. The technical, the physical and the mental aspects, the appropriate equipment as well as the strategy, as the basis to improve not only technically but with the objective to take learning to the golf course.

Another approach taken at the Jack Nicklaus Academy at Finca Cortesín, is helping students understand the cause and effect of their mistakes. With the help of the highest technology and using video cameras in order to follow the flight of the ball, the students learn the correct movements for a good swing.

Ricardo Jiménez, Instruction Manager at the school tells us “there are many players who have never seen themselves and if they have, they have never analyzed their own swing and they are really impressed”. Rubén Holgado, the Academy Instructor, also wanted to point out that “95% of players who come to the Jack Nicklaus Academy at Finca Cortesín, do not have the appropriate equipment”, “they have clubs which are not suitable for their swing, so they develop wrong technical gestures”. Instructors and professionals help in making the appropriate club suitable for the characteristics of each player at The Official Fitting Centre Taylor Made.

Mark Emery y la academia de

San Roque Club Golf de la “vieja escuela” Cogió por primera vez un palo de golf a la edad de 6 años y desde entonces, el sueño de Mark Emery era convertirse en un Profesional del PGA Británico. Como él mismo dice, es un profesor que aprendió a la manera de “la vieja escuela” —————— Mark Emery es el nuevo profesional de la Escuela de Golf de San Roque. Su carrera comenzó a una edad temprana como Profesional del PGA Británico, aprendiendo todas las técnicas de la profesión desde la reparación de

palos hasta la gestión de la tienda. La pasión por el golf le llevó a querer enseñar y transmitir sus conocimientos a otros.

Su primera oportunidad la tuvo en Tewkesbury Park Golf and Country Club, donde trabajó con los socios y clientes del hotel y con Dennis Pugh, instructor de muchos de los mejores jugadores del European Tour, incluyendo a Colin Montgomerie. Más tarde cambiaría de residencia para irse como profesor a Munich (Alemania), lugar desde el que volaría por primera vez a España, hace 25 años.

Desde entonces, Mark, ha estado en contacto con España, trayendo a sus alumnos de los numerosos clubes alemanes en los que ha ejercido como profesional y en los que ha dado clase a jugadores desde los 5 años a los 80, a equipos, a Seniors, y un largo etcétera de personas con las que, gracias a su vocación docente, ha entablado una verdadera amistad.

En agosto de 2016, pasó a ser el Profesional en The San Roque Club, un sueño hecho realidad.

“Tengo muchas ganas de transmitir mis conocimientos del swing y muchos otros aspectos de este gran juego” El nuevo concepto de Academia es apto para todo tipo de jugadores independientemente de su nivel de juego. Las clases impartidas en español, alemán, idiomas escandinavos e inglés, se organizan individualmente o por grupos. En ellas Mark, trabaja con los alumnos todos los aspectos del juego. Además se pueden organizar clinics personalizados para eventos corporativos.

Y la gran novedad para este año, es la apertura de una Academia Junior en la que los jugadores recibirán toda la preparación necesaria para continuar con su carrera en el golf y llegar a lo más alto.

“Old School” Golf He first picked up a golf club at the age of 6 and since then, Mark Emery’s dream was to become a British PGA Professional. As he says, he is a teacher that learnt the “old school” way.

His career started as a British PGA Professional at an early age, learning all the skills of the trade from club repair to shop management. Passion for golf is what made him want to teach and pass his knowledge onto others.

His first opportunity was at Tewkesbury Park and Country Club, where he worked with members and guests of the

hotel and with Dennis Pugh, the coach of many top European Tour players including Colin Montgomerie. After that, he moved to Munich (Germany) to work as a teacher, from where he first flew down to Spain, 25 years ago.

Since then, Mark has been in contact with Spain, bringing his students from the clubs in Germany where he has worked as a professional and where he has taught players from 5 to 80 years old, teams, Senior players and a long list of people with whom he has developed a true friendship, thanks to his teaching vocation.

In August 2016, he became the Professional at The San Roque Club, a dream come true.

The new concept of the Academy is suitable for all kind of players regardless of their level. The classes are taught in Spanish, German, Scandinavian languages and English and are organised individually or in groups. During the lessons, Mark works with the students every aspect of the game. In addition, personalised clinics for corporate events can be organised.

Finally, this year’s big innovation is the opening of a Junior Academy in which players will receive all the necessary training to continue with their golf career and get to the top. ✪

ENTONCES, SE ENFRENTABA AL GRAN RETO DE DIRIGIR 3 CAMPOS, NORTE, SUR Y OESTE, LOS 3 DE 18 HOYOS EN UNO DE LOS RESORTS MÁS PRESTIGIOSOS DEL SUR DE EUROPA. ———————— Hace un año y medio que te entrevistamos para Golf Circus cuando acababas de llegar al puesto en La Manga. ¿Qué balance haces hasta ahora?

Durante este primer año y medio hemos intentado mejorar el servicio, las infraestructuras y el nivel de mantenimiento de los campos. Tengo que decir que en cada uno de los tres apartados hemos progresado de manera exitosa.

Los campos de golf han recibido reconcimientos a nivel europeo por parte de medios especializados y de la tour operación internacional, el servicio se ha ido ajustando a las necesidades de un resort 5 estrellas como el nuestro. En cuanto a infraestructuras, hemos cambiado completamente el proshop, el restaurante y todas las señalizaciones de los campos. ¿Se han cumplido tus objetivos?

Por supuesto, no esperaba poder avanzar tanto en tan poco tiempo. No podria haber alcanzado estas metas sin el apoyo total de la propiedad y la direccion general del resort.

Sin embargo, no cesamos en nuestro empeño de elevar los campos a unas cotas de excelencia muchísimo mas altas. El trabajo constante, la supervisión y la dedicación por parte de todos los estamentos de la empresa son fundamentales para continuar con nuestra progresion ascendente.

Parece que el sector del turismo tira como nunca de la economía de España. Este verano se han batido todos los records de llegada de turistas. ¿Cómo ha ido el verano para el golf en La Manga?

Hemos tenido un excelente verano al igual que otros destinos.

Tenemos que destacar una masiva afluencia del cliente nacional algo totalmente novedoso en nuestro resort y en la región de Murcia. Hemos conseguido llenar nuestros campos gracias a una política dinámica de yield, la cual hemos adapatado a los diferentes segmentos de mercado.

¿Supone un problema la estacionalidad para La Manga?

La Manga Club Resort es uno de los pocos resort en Europa que supo romper la estacionaliad hace muchos años; nosotros combinamos todos nuestros deportes para hacer atractivos los diferentes paquetes que lanzamos al mercado. Podemos combinar golf y tenis, futbol y golf, criquet y golf..., estas combinaciones nos permiten desestacionalizar las temporadas con menos afluencia de clientes. ¿Cuáles son los nuevos proyectos para el golf en La Manga?

Vamos a seguir invirtiendo en infraestructuras. Una nueva terraza para el recien reformado Spike Bar, contruccion de los nuevos caminos para buggies en los tres campos de golf y continuar con nuestro cambio progresivo del parque de maquinaria.

Durante el 2017, comenzaremos a preparar el campo sur para un posible evento del circuito europeo.

Otro de los grandes proyectos es la nueva Academia que se llamara La Manga Club Golf Trainning Centre by Thomas Johansson. Es un gran profesional sueco muy reconocido que ha trabajado en campos como San Roque en Sotogrande o Los Naranjos en la Costa del Sol. En ella crearemos un nuevo sistema de enseñanza basado en la unión de la escuela sueca, inglesa y española, junto con una Academia infantil bilingüe para hacerla más atractiva al público español. Nuestro reto es clasificar, al menos, dos niños para el campeonato nacional infantil de 2018 que se jugará en nuestros campos.

ONE YEAR AND A HALF AGO, EDUARDO RUIZ JOINED LA MANGA GOLF TEAM AS ITS GOLF DIRECTOR. AT THAT TIME, HE FACED THE CHALLENGE OF RUNNING 3 COURSES, NORTH, SOUTH AND WEST, 18-HOLES-IN ONE EACH, IN ONE OF THE MOST RENOWNED RESORTS IN SOUTHERN EUROPE. GIVEN THE PERSPECTIVE OF TIME, GOLF CIRCUS INTERVIEWS HIM AND HE TELLS US ABOUT LA MANGA CLUB PRESENT AND ITS FUTURE PROJECTS. ——— It’s been one year and a half since we interviewed you for Golf Circus, when you had just arrived to your new position at La Manga. What is the evaluation so far?

During this first year and a half we have tried to improve the service offered, infrastructures and maintenance of the golf courses. I must say that in all three sections we have progressed successfully.

The golf courses have been recognised in Europe by specialised media and the international tour operator. In terms of infrastructure, we have completely changed the proshop, the restaurant and all the signage on the courses.

Have your goals been fulfilled?

Of course, I did not expect to progress that much in so little time. I could not have achieved these goals without the full support of ownership and resort’s general management.

However, we do not relax in our efforts to raise the golf courses to a much higher level of excellence. Constant work, supervision and commitment from all areas of the company are essential to continue with our ascending progression.

It seems that Spanish economy is more than ever supported by tourism. This summer has broken all records in terms of tourist arrivals. How did the summer go for golf in La Manga?

We have had an excellent summer, just like some other destinations. We must emphasise we had a massive influx of national customers which is totally new in our resort and also in the region of Murcia. We have managed to fill up our courses thanks to a dynamic policy of yield, which we have adapted to the different market segments.

Is it seasonality a problem for La Manga?

La Manga Club Resort is one of the few resorts in Europe that learnt how to overcome seasonality many years ago; we combine all the sports we offer to make attractive the different packages launched. It is possible to mix golf and tennis, football and golf, cricket and golf, etc. All these combinations enable us to get over periods with less turnout of customers.

Which are the new projects for golf at La Manga?

We will continue to invest in infrastructures. A new terrace for the recently refurbished Spike Bar, the construction of new paths for buggies in all three golf courses and carry on with our gradual renovation of the machinery fleet.

During 2017, we will start preparing the South course to host a possible event of the European tour.

Another important project is the new Academy, which will be called La Manga Club Golf Training Centre by Thomas Johansson. He is a Swedish well-known professional who has worked at San Roque golf course, in Sotogrande, or Los Naranjos, in the Costa del Sol. In this academy we will create a new educational system based on the combination of Swedish, English and Spanish school, together with a bilingual children’s academy to make it more attractive to the Spanish public. Our challenge is that, at least, two kids qualify for the 2018 junior national championship that will take place in our golf courses. âœŞ

————————— El Old Course es un campo de 18 hoyos, par 72, diseñado por Bernard von Limburger, Campeón de Golf de Alemania en 1925 y que posteriormente se convertiría en uno de los arquitectos de campos de golf más prestigiosos de su país. Sus largas calles onduladas y anchas, sus numerosos bunkers de marmolina, greenes rápidos y la numerosa vegetación de olivos, pinos, palmeras y eucaliptos, suponen un reto para jugadores de todos los niveles.

En noviembre de 2015, se comenzaron las actuaciones en el Old Course que han

terminado en octubre de 2016: el hoyo 1 ha sufrido una remodelación completa del hoyo (tees, calle, bunkers y geen) y los tees de los hoyos, 5, 7, 11, 13 y 14 también se han modificado para darle una mayor longitud al recorrido del Old Course de Atalaya Golf & Country Club.

El New Course, de 18 hoyos y par 71, aparte de ofrecer unas vistas espectaculares sobre el Mediterráneo y Gibraltar, es considerado uno de los campos más naturales e integrados con su entorno de la Costa del Sol. Diseñado en 1990 por Paul Krings, este campo se encuentra más ha-

cia el interior, siendo mucho más técnico, aunque un poco más corto que el Old Course, lo que ofrece al jugador de hándicap bajo el reto de poder jugar de una forma más precisa, premiando bastante el golpe bien colocado, dándole un mayor aliciente al juego y da la posibilidad al jugador de hándicap medio y alto de hacer un mejor resultado por no ser tan importante el buen uso del drive.

En cuanto a calidad y mantenimiento, el New Course está ya casi al mismo nivel que el Old Course y durante los meses de verano suele ofrecer ofertas para que

el jugador ocasional pueda descubrir este impresionante campo, gran desconocido por muchos al encontrarse eclipsado por el Old Course, complementando perfectamente la magnífica oferta de Atalaya Golf & Country Club.

Más de 2.500 toneladas de arena se distribuyeron en las calles de ambos recorridos para garantizar una mejor calidad durante el invierno; se acometió el re-sembrado de la hierba de invierno con el fin de mejorar la calidad de roughs y calles para los meses de octubre a abril; la actual flota de buggies eléctricos se aumentó con la compra de 30 vehículos más, junto con la incorporación de una flota de apoyo de 60 coches; al mismo tiempo se mejoró la calidad de los caminos y la ampliación de los intervalos de tiempo entra las salidas

a 9 minutos por la mañana, lo que ha supuesto una gran repercusión en la calidad de la experiencia del jugador que acude a Atalaya Golf & Country Club.

De las importantes inversiones realizadas en la Casa Club, destacaríamos la construcción de una magnífica terraza para el restaurante, las reformas de los vestuarios de señoras y de caballeros, para Socios y los vestuarios para visitantes, junto con la construcción de un nuevo gimnasio de uso exclusivo para sus Socios, nuevas oficinas y zona de Administración… así como la nueva terraza junto al también nuevo quiosco que sorprenderá al visitante por haberse colocado bajo el tee del 1 del Old Course, posiblemente el único de este tipo en Europa. Inversiones como estas, han hecho que Atalaya Golf & Country

Club sea capaz de aumentar su número de socios en un 25% con una diversidad de más de 36 nacionalidades.

Como último objetivo del plan prefijado, según nos comenta su Director General D. Andrés Sánchez, “sólo nos quedaría por terminar el parking cubierto que acabamos de comenzar, para más de 150 coches, dado que, con el auge que está teniendo nuestro Club en los últimos años, no podíamos dar el servicio esperado a nuestros Socios y visitantes y el nuevo pro shop que esperamos acometer el año próximo durante nuestra temporada baja”.

Atalaya Golf & Country Club was founded in 1968, when the proliferation of complexes on the Costa del Sol had not started and golf was only played by a few in Spain. It is located in one of the strategic triangles of tourism on the Costa del Sol, between Marbella, Benahavis and Estepona, the club bands together a passion for golf, the tradition of a golf pioneer in the area and the modernity of its facilities. ————————— The Old Course is an 18-hole course, 72 par, designed by Bernard von Limburger, German champion in 1925 and who later became one of the most prestigious golf course architect in his country. Its long wavy and wide fairways, its many bunkers made of “marmolina” sand, quick greens and vegetation with olive trees, pines, palm trees and eucalyptus trees is a real challenge for all level players.

In November 2015, works started in the Old Course and have finished in October 2016; hole 1 has been completely remodeled (tees, fairways, bunkers and green), and tees in holes 5,7,11,13 and 14 have also been modified in order to extend the itinerary of the Old Course at Atalaya Golf & Country Club.

The New Course, 18 hole and 71 par, apart from offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean and Gibraltar is considered one of the most natural and environmentally integrated golf course on the Costa del Sol. Designed in 1990

Concerning quality and maintenance, the New Course is at the same level of the Old Course. In the summer months there are special offers for occasional players to discover this incredible golf course, unknown to many as it is overclouded by the Old Course. More than 2,500 tons of sand were distributed along the fairways on both itineraries in order to guarantee quality in the winter months; re-sowing of winter grass was done to improve quality of roughs and fairways during the months from October to April; the actual fleet of electric buggies has increased since 30 new vehicles have been bought and a new fleet of 60 support cars have been added; at the same time quality of fairways has been improved and entrance time slots have been extended to 9 minutes in the morning which has affected positively the quality of the game experienced by players who come to Atalaya Golf & Country Club.

Regarding the important investments put into the Club House, we would like to point out the building of a fantastic terrace for the restaurant, the changes in the ladies and gentlemen changing rooms for Members and the visitors’

changing rooms, as well as the building of a new gym for members only, new offices, administration areas……..Also, the new terrace next to the new kiosk which will surprise players as it is located under tee 1 in the Old Course. ——————— Palmer nació el 10 de septiembre de 1929 en la ciudad cervecera de Latrobe, Pennsylvania. A pesar de caminar con una cojera, como resultado de contraer la polio cuando era un niño, su padre, Deacon, era el profesional y greenkeeper del Country Club de Latrobe, donde enseñó a su hijo Arnold todo lo que sabía sobre el golf. El swing de Palmer no fue nunca "poesía en movimiento". Muy al contrario, agarraba el palo con todos los músculos de su cuerpo en tensión pero con un absoluto control antes de golpear la bola. El swing de Palmer era, lo que sólo podría ser descrito como, machacar la bola, pero que cualquier aficionado que lo intentaba, fracasaba estrepitosamente. Y es que no podemos olvidar un pequeño detalle, era simplemente talento. Los puristas, como Henry Cotton, desaprobaban su swing pero los aficionados al golf, vieron con asombro como Palmer dominó, no sólo a sus oponentes, sino también a los campos de golf. Y así, sus fans, conocidos como "El ejército de Arnie", se deleitaban con la emoción creada por su ídolo.

Tras permanecer un periodo de 3 años

en la Guardia Costera de EE.UU., Palmer salta al estrellato ganando el US Amateur Championship en 1954, tras lo que se haría profesional y ganaría el Open de Canadá al año siguiente. El Masters fue su primer Major en 1960, pero fue sólo dos años más tarde, en el mismo torneo, cuando atrae verdaderamente la atención de los titulares. Estando 2 golpes por detrás del líder, Ken Venturi, hizo birdie en los dos últimos hoyos y se llevó la victoria.

Algunos meses más tarde, en el US Open, en Cherry Hills, uno de los campos más difíciles, comenzó la ronda final siete golpes por debajo. Seis birdies en los siete primeros hoyos, convirtieron a Arnie en el campeón del US Open a la edad de 32.

A pesar de clasificarse para jugar el Open, en 1960, Palmer perdió por sólo un golpe contra Kel Nagle. En su segundo Open en el Royal Birkdale, al año siguiente, comenzaba su segunda ronda, cuando se desató una tormenta. Con estas condiciones realmente desfavorables, Arnie, se sacó de la manga, 5 birdies en 6 hoyos. Y aunque no pudo continuar con ese nivel, nadie lo haría, fue un digno ganador. En esos años, los golfistas estadounidenses, no es que

se mataran por ir al Open, pero el apoyo de Palmer al torneo restauró su condición de mejor torneo del mundo.

Por extraño que parezca, el punto álgido de la carrera de Palmer fue relativamente corto, con sus siete victorias importantes logradas en sólo seis años, entre 1958 y 1964, mientras que su última victoria en el PGA Tour llegó en 1973, aunque después tuvo algunos destellos de genialidad.

Como su victoria en el Open de España, en La Manga, en 1975. La última que Arnold Palmer visitó España, con motivo de la presentación de su línea de ropa, declaró:

“En el 75 vine a jugar el Open de España a La Manga Club ¡y lo gané! Tenía que hacer eagle en el último hoyo para ganar y lo conseguí. Tengo muy buenos recuerdos de La Manga Club, un gran campo, y de aquel torneo. Me invitó a jugar Greg Peters, su dueño, que era un tipo muy simpático y amigo de Mark McCormack”.

Y es que Arnold Palmer, no se limitó a hacer carrera en el golf, sus negocios incluyen dos campos de golf, una empresa de diseño de campos y una línea de ropa, además de sus numerosos ingresos por publicidad.

“Como sabéis, Mark McCormack y yo fundamos IMG dándonos la mano; mi padre, que era profesional de golf, me enseñó a hacer las cosas de ese modo. Íbamos a constituir la compañía y Mark me dijo que prepararía un contrato, a lo que me negué. Le dije: ‘mírame a los ojos y démonos la mano’, y así fue como empezamos a trabajar juntos”.

“He diseñado más de 300 campos por todo el mundo, en Estados Unidos, Latino América, Japón, China, Indonesia, Filipinas… Ahora se está poniendo la cosa difícil; en mi época jugábamos campos de unas 6.000 / 7.000 yardas y ahora los piden de más de 7.600” “No sé dónde vamos a llegar y esto es lo que me da miedo respecto al golf. Habría que reducir un poco la velocidad de la bola. Hay que continuar investigando; los nuevos materiales -grafito, titanio…, hacen el juego un poco más fácil, pero debemos tratar de mantener su esencia. La gente debe disfrutar del golf en familia, y también hay que pensar en los profesionales, aunque siempre respetando la esencia del juego. Yo he tenido algo que ver en las decisiones sobre las nuevas estrías, he participado en reuniones con el R&A y la USGA. Se debe llegar a un acuerdo con los fabricantes porque, si no lo paramos, ¿hasta dónde vamos a llegar?”.

“El estilo de mi ropa es relativamente tradicional, aunque estamos introduciendo algunas variaciones en el diseño del cuello de los polos para adaptarnos a lo que ahora quieren llevar los más jóvenes. Es ropa cómoda, de colores lisos y claros”.

Una anécdota que retrata bien la calidad humana de Arnold Palmer fue, cuando, jugando en Forth Worth en 1962, tuvo que parar el juego cuando un niño pequeño gritó mientras se dirigía hacia la bola. En un segundo intento, el chico volvió a gritar y su madre intentó callarlo tapándole la boca, otros jugadores hubieran puesto el grito en el cielo, pero

Arnold no. Simplemente se acercó al chico y acariciándole la cabeza, se dirigió a su madre y le dijo: “Déjelo, no es tan importante” La historia, le dará sin duda a Arnold Palmer un lugar de honor como el jugador responsable de la modernización del golf.

IN “GO FOR BROKE”, ONE OF HIS EARLY BOOKS IN WHICH HE MUSED ON HIS GOLFING PHILOSOPHY, PALMER WROTE, “IT ALL STARTED AS A DREAM THAT ENDURED – TO PLAY THE GAME WITH AN UNREACHABLE PERFECTION. THE DREAM GOES ON AND SO DOES THE PLEASURE. I STILL EXPERIENCE, AS EVERY GOLFER DOES, THE EXALTATION OF THE HARD SHOT TRULY ACHIEVED, THE BOLD PLAY BOLDLY MADE.” THAT STATEMENT EPITOMISED HOW PALMER PLAYED THE GAME THROUGHOUT HIS ENTIRE CAREER. HE COULD NOT RESIST A SHOT THE RESULT OF WHICH WAS A GAMBLE WHICH EITHER WON HIM OR LOST HIM A TOURNAMENT. PLAYING SAFE WAS JUST NOT HIS WAY.

—————— Palmer was born on 10th September 1929 in the brewery town of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to a family steeped in golf. Despite walking with a limp, as a result of contracting polio as a boy, his father Deacon was appointed professional and head greenkeeper at the Latrobe Country Club where he taught his son Arnold all he knew about the game. Palmer’s swing could never be described as “poetry in motion”, on the contrary his hands folded around the club with a vice-like grip before he proceeded to hit the ball with every sinew in his body. He made, what can only be described as, an ungainly slash at the ball which every amateur watching thought he could emulate but, on trying, failed miserably. The amateurs’ missing ingredient was simply - talent. Purists, such as Henry Cotton, disapproved of the swing but golfing fans watched in awe as Palmer overpowered not only his opponents but also golf courses while his famous inspirational “charges” became legendary. At that time professionals looked on spectators as an necessary evil while Palmer, on the other hand, engaged them in conversation and banter

as the round progressed. His fans, who became known as “Arnie’s Army”, revelled in the excitement created by their enormously likeable and friendly idol.

Having completed a three-year stint in the US Coast Guard Palmer first become noticed when he won the US Amateur Championship in 1954 after which he turned professional and won the Canadian Open the following year. The Masters was his first major title in 1960 but it was two years later, at the same tournament, that he really captured the headlines. He stood on the 71st tee two strokes behind the leader Ken Venturi and then proceeded to birdie the final two holes to claim victory by a stroke. Some months later, in the US Open at Cherry Hills, a notoriously difficult course, he started the final round seven strokes in arrears. Six birdies over the first seven holes put paid to his opponents’ chances and Arnie became the US Open Champion by two strokes at the age of 32. Despite having to pre-qualify for the Open in 1960 he travelled over to play but lost by a single stroke to Kel Nagle. His second Open was at Royal Birkdale the following year, where he still had to pre-qualify which is hard to imagine nowadays. He started his second round in the teeth of a storm which flattened tents and had spectators ducking to avoid beer crates flying in the wind. Revelling in the atrocious conditions Palmer plundered five birdies in his opening six holes playing some remarkable golf. Despite being unable to continue that magic and, in addition, having to call a penalty on himself when his ball moved in a bunker at the 17th hole he was a worthy winner of that championship. In those years American golfers rarely bothered with the Open and it is widely accepted that Palmer’s support of the tournament restored its status as the finest championship in the world.

Strangely the peak of Palmer’s career was relatively short with his seven major victories achieved in just six years between 1958 and 1964 while his final win on the PGA Tour came in 1973. Even when past his best Palmer could not be discounted and he occasionally produced some flashes of inspirational golf such as when winning both the Spanish Open at La Manga and the Penfold PGA at Royal St George’s in 1975.

Arnold Palmer’s expertise was not confined to playing the game and his business ventures included two Country Clubs, golf equipment and golf course design. In addition he was a much sought after favourite with producers of television commercials. He owned his own Lear jet which he piloted to a new world record for a round-the –world flight.

One anecdote which comes to mind typifies the gentleman who was Arnold Palmer. While playing at Forth Worth in 1962 Palmer had to step away from a shot when a small boy shouted as he addressed the ball. He had to move away a second time when the mother tried to choke off the boy’s second effort. While many professionals I could mention would have “hit the roof” at that stage but not Arnold. He simply walked over and patted the boy on the head while saying to his mother, “Hey, don’t choke him; it’s not all that important.”

I had the pleasure of interviewing Arnold Palmer on two occasions, one at his home in Latrobe and again at his second home at Bay Hill Country Club. Both experiences have remained spectacularly clear in my memory whilst countless others have faded totally into oblivion.

From the firmness of his handshake to the smiling features; from his friendliness and willingness to answer countless questions as if time was of no consequence; not to mention the patience extended to a golf writer who was more than somewhat in awe of his interviewee.

All are indelibly etched in my memory.

When the friendly smile and iron handshake are long forgotten history will record Arnold Palmer as the player ultimately responsible for the evolution of the game from the ancient to the modern. A proper legacy fit for “The King”. ✪

En La Cala tenemos una clara ventaja, somos un resort con una buena y sólida reputación en los principales mercados europeos. Además la inversión realizada, hace algunos años, en un spa de última generación nos ha permitido competir con cualquier complejo de 5*. Fuera de los complejos turísticos hay mucho que hacer en Andalucía.

Como por ejemplo en el turismo cultural,

golf superior al año pasado, con un crecimiento en el segmento de golf de casi un 7% respecto al año anterior. Llenar nuestros 3 campos siempre es un reto, sobre todo, en verano, cuando las temperaturas no son tan cómodas para la práctica de este deporte. Nuestro público principal en verano, son grupos de vacaciones familiares. En este sentido, el promedio de ocupación de este verano ha sido mejor que el pasado, con un ocupación en el hotel del 94% y 97%, en Julio y Agosto, respectivamente.

Of course, supply and demand dictates what time of the year those offers can be most attractive. At La Cala we have a distinct advantage of course being a golf resort that is very well established and has a solid reputation in our key markets across Europe. At the beginning of this year for example, January was one of our best months. Winter golf down here on the Costa del Sol is a far more pleasant experience than it would be in Northern Europe where the majority of our clients come from. For those hotels with conference and event facilities, they will be looking to tap into the lucrative MICE market to fill rooms during off season. This takes time to establish and build up a reputation as a suitable

destination which offers more than just meeting space. Some years ago now, we invested heavily in developing a state of the art Spa which would rival that of any five start resort. Hotels with a good Spa also have a key advantage over their competitors to tackle the lower demands to visit the region during the winter months. Domestically, a hotel with a good Spa can market themselves for weekend breaks although Hoteliers will of course be looking for more than just a full hotel on weekends. Outside of the resorts there is so much to do in the Andalucía region in terms of historical and cultural sightseeing excursions, some of which are so much more pleasant to partake in during the cooler winter months than in the heat of summer.

All of us in the tourism industry on the Costa del Sol will be delighted to see that Malaga is establishing a name for itself as a cultural city to rival others in Spain. To support this we are seeing more airlines increasing their flight schedules into Malaga, which can only be positive news for all of us as we try to counter act the seasonality of the industry in our region.

And how it has gone to La Cala this summer?

We have had an excellent summer season with the number of golf rounds exceeding last year and that was a strong year for us having grown our golf business by almost 7% on the year before.

Of course, it is always going to be a challenge for us to fill the three La Cala golf courses in the height of summer when the temperatures are not so comfortable for golf. Our core business is golfing groups that will generally be spending this time of the year on their summer vacations with their families. The hotel has performed even better compared to last summer, with average occupancies of 94% in July and 97% in August. Los mercados financieros, las empresas locales y gigantes de la fabricación se prepararon para un impacto considerable mientras el Reino Unido da los pasos necesarios para llegar a ser independientes una vez más.

Inmediatamente, tanto aficionados del deporte del golf como operadores turísticos expresaron su inquietud sobre el futuro de la industria de los viajes y el efecto que tendría en la turoperación y en la evolución de las salidas de los campos de golf.

Pero, ¿qué ha cambiado realmente en la industria de los turoperadores desde entonces?

Pues, en un primer momento, la volatilidad de la Libra, hizo mella en la confianza de los clientes, lo que supuso que las reservas cayeran antes y después del referéndum, a pesar de que el número de consultas de los consumidores seguía siendo fuerte. Entre toda esta ambigüedad, los consumidores decidieron no gastar su dinero, descartando cualquier gasto no esencial, como los viajes de placer.

En otro sentido, y lejos de la incertidumbre monetaria, ¿es posible que el efecto de la división llegue a palparse en Europa? A pesar de la unidad exhibida en la Ryder, es difícil saber, la percepción que tienen los jugadores de golf del actual clima político en Gran Bretaña.

El Reino Unido ha sido bendecido con una gran cantidad de magníficos campos de golf como St. Andrews, "la cuna del golf" o el increíble Royal Birkdale, situado en medio de las espectaculares dunas de Southport. Su impacto y el posterior éxito en la economía del Reino Unido, incidió sobre todo en su turismo interno y más tarde, una Libra más débil, lo convirtió en un destino más atractivo para los visitantes extranjeros.

Mientras que la fe y la calma entre los consumidores del Reino Unido continua elevándose, todavía quedan muchas preguntas en el aire. Como, si veremos un puesto de control fronterizo en los famosos puntos de acceso diario a Irlanda del Norte o a la República de Irlanda, o si los turistas de golf británicos tendrán que pasar aduanas en los aeropuertos europeos.

Una cosa es segura, la industria de los viajes no está tan dañada como muchos predijeron.

TURISMO RESIDENCIAL Y DE GOLF FRENTE A LOS EFECTOS DEL BREXIT —JACOBO CESTINO—

Al igual que para la mayoría de los empresarios de UK, el hecho de que los británicos hayan decidido en referéndum abandonar la Unión Europea, es una fuente de creciente preocupación también para el sector turístico tradicional y residencial español.

Mientras España, en términos generales, se encuentra por debajo de la media de los países de la Unión respecto a su negativa exposición al “Brexit”, bien es verdad que, en cuanto a las particularidades de los mercados emisores de golfistas por un lado, inmobiliario/turístico y residencial por otro, el impacto negativo puede ser enorme.

El Reino Unido ha sido históricamente el principal mercado emisor de compradores extranjeros de vivienda en España. En este sentido y a tenor de las cifras ofrecidas por Naciones Unidas y el Gobierno Británico, aproximadamente ochocientos mil británicos viven en España, la mitad de ellos de forma permanente (expats) y otro tanto equivalente de forma circunstancial, es decir, durante temporadas cortas o periodos vacacionales. En definitiva, periodos suficientemente estables como para disponer de una vivienda en propiedad en España. Así mismo, desde el punto de vista del turista de golf, la supremacía del mercado británico también es indiscutible. A GC#20 | 67

Los últimos tres años y siguiendo la tendencia histórica, UK ha vuelto, al menos en Andalucía, al ranking de las nacionalidades extranjeras de compradores de viviendas. La relación, por tanto, entre la recuperación del mercado inmobiliario, en especial el de la vivienda de alta gama, y el cliente del Reino Unido es un hecho más que contrastado.

La recuperación del mercado inmobiliario residencial en España lleva varios semestres tendiendo a su consolidación en volumen y en precio, aunque a ritmo más lento. En este sentido, el producto residencial del rango alto de la curva, el de lujo, ha resistido los años de recesión, en contraste con el de otras tipologías de vivienda, con bastante buena salud.

Si bien es verdad que ayudado por algunos factores externos, como las reformas legislativas fiscales e hipotecarias llevadas a cabo en algunos países de nuestra competencia. Tal y como puso de relieve un informe de Christies Real Estates de hace algunos años: “el mercado de viviendas de lujo se mantiene aislado de los flujos de dinero y de los cambios políticos, ya que éstas preocupaciones son menos propensas a determinar la compra de una casa-trofeo para la población “UHNW” de todo el mundo”.

Hoy en día hay más millonarios que antes de la crisis global de 2008 y su número ha crecido más del 55% desde el año 2000”. En el documento publicado por el FMI, “Managing Real Estate Booms and Busts” en Agosto de 2012, el Organismo se pronunció sobre la relativa importancia del sector inmobiliario en la economía mundial, frente a otras formas de inversión o ahorro, observando: “Real Estate is an important, if not the most important, storage of wealth in the economy.

Additionally, the mayority of households tend to hold wealth in their homes rather than in equities”.

Si tal y como han puesto de manifiesto los últimos datos del sector turístico, los

mercados tradicionales (británico, alemán y escandinavo) van a seguir tirando de la demanda, parece obvio deducir que el “Brexit” tendrá consecuencias muy perjudiciales para un sector, que aún encuentra dificultades de política interna para ser competitivo. En este sentido, algunos de los obstáculos con los que se encuentran los posibles compradores de residencias de gama media-alta, al invertir en España, tales como la inseguridad jurídica producida por la deficiente legislación sobre PBC (prevención de blanqueo de capitales), las dificultades burocráticas respecto al NIE, los permisos de residencia, todas las gestiones locales relacionadas con Urbanismo y Obras y también las nuevas obligaciones fiscales de los residentes extranjeros, podrían considerarse como menores, en comparación con el escenario al que nos enfrentamos, tras la salida del Reino Unido de la UE. Una exagerada devaluación de la Libra frente al Euro, tal y como estamos viendo en estos días, así como la necesidad de nuevos acuerdos bilaterales sobre determinados beneficios y prestaciones sociales existentes, sanitarios fundamentalmente, provocará, en mi opinión, que muchos de los “expats”, decidan cambiar su lugar de residencia o incluso volver al Reino Unido. Esto tendría un efecto multiplicador en cuanto al crecimiento de la oferta y divisor en cuanto a los precios del mercado secundario. No podemos obviar tampoco la menor influencia que estos residentes ejercerían sobre la pequeña y mediana empresa local aún permaneciendo en nuestro país, pero con su moneda devaluada.

En cuanto al mercado de turistas tradicional, y en particular al que viene a jugar al golf a España, creo que sólo aquellos empresarios que sean capaces de mejorar su competitividad vía costes, podrán abordar con ciertas garantías, la necesaria disminución de precios que la pérdida de poder adquisitivo del británico y la excesi-

va dependencia de de este mercado va a tener como causas.

Para terminar, creo que es necesario mencionar, por su influencia en un área tan estratégica para el turismo residencial, familiar, deportivo y de alta gama como Sotogrande, las consecuencias que para Gibraltar tendría el “Brexit”.

La limitación o incluso, la no concesión de permisos de residencia, así como las restricciones al ejercicio de actividades laborales y profesionales en España a los ciudadanos gibraltareños, tendría un efecto negativo para todos aquellos que, aparentando ser residentes en Gibraltar, tienen su domicilio y/o centro de trabajo en la zona del Campo de Gibraltar y la urbanizaciones de lujo de Sotogrande.

En este escenario, el Gobierno español tendría la iniciativa, pero más allá de lo que, las diferentes administraciones, puedan hacer para mitigar todos estos defectos, los empresarios tienen la obligación de planificar desde el punto de vista estratégico la relación de su “resort” con el escenario presente y futuro.

Creo que invertir en explorar o consolidar otros mercados emisores, especialmente los países escandinavos y el alemán, revisar a conciencia la estructura de costes, analizar los niveles de calidad y servicio al cliente, programar un plan de mejoras y actualización del diseño de campos de golf para hacerlos competitivos con los destinos de nuestra competencia y finalmente, mejorar la comunicación y las políticas de penetración de mercados y accesos al cliente final al que el siglo XXI ha llevado, son acciones indispensables para la próxima década.

THE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON GOLF TOUR OPERATORS —GLENCOR GOLF— —————— The uncertainty that gripped the nation following the UK’s decision to exit the European Union should not be underestimated. Financial markets, local businesses and manufacturing giants braced themselves for a sizeable impact as this historic outcome was confirmed and the UK outlined the required steps to become independent once again.

Through all of this, apprehensive golf enthusiasts and concerned tour operators expressed trepidation over the future of the travel industry and the effect it would have on those hoping to head abroad and tee off in the summer.

Nearly three months on - what has actually changed in the world of golf tour operators?

The volatility of the pound initially damaged customer confidence as the number of bookings within the industry plummeted and fewer British golf travellers experiencing the magnificent golfing splendour across the continent.

These short-term effects were analysed

by Glencor Golf Holidays’ Director Glen Renton who highlighted that “shortly before and after the Brexit referendum we saw a drop in the number of bookings despite the number of enquiries from consumers still being strong.”

Amidst the ambiguity, many individuals and families reassessed their finances and resisted the temptation to expend their income on non-essential spending, therefore ruling out any expense on such indulgence as leisure travel.

With the majority of golf holiday sales booked in groups, the chief organiser of each troupe simply extended the lead time from enquiry to putting pen to paper, thus allowing them to oversee the current exchange rate and golf-travel landscape.

However, Renton has confirmed that these past few months had seen this initial probing turn into bookings, signifying that customer confidence is gradually beginning to return to a degree of normality.

Away from the monetary insecurity, is there potential for a divide to spread across the rest of Europe? Despite the united front they exhibit contesting the Ryder Cup; it is difficult to know the perception that golfers in France, Germany and other continental European countries have on the current political climate in Great Britain.

The UK is blessed with a plethora of magnificent golf courses such as St Andrews (“The Home Of Golf”) or the spectacular Royal Birkdale nestled amid Southport's spectacular sand dunes. The subsequent hit on the economy was of great benefit to the UK’s own tourism sector as a weaker pound made Britain a cheaper destination for overseas visitors.

Whilst faith and calmness amongst UK consumers continues to elevate, many questions still remain. Will a border checkpoint be implemented between the popular daily-double hotspots of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland? Will British golf tourists be forced to spend more time in other European airports clearing customs?

One thing is for sure – the industry is not as damaged as many predicted.

RESIDENTIAL AND GOLF TOURISM FACING THE EFFECTS OF BREXIT —JACOBO CESTINO— As for the majority of business owners in the UK, the fact that the British have decided to leave the European Union by means of a referendum is a constant source of increasing worry, also for the traditional Spanish residential and tourism sector.

Whereas Spain, regarding the negative effect of Brexit is in general terms under average within the countries of the Union; it is true that due to the distinctive features in the issue market of golfers on one hand and that related to residential/tourism property on the other, the negative effect can be enormous.

The United Kingdom has been the main issue market of foreign house buyers in Spain historically. In this sense, figures provided by United Nations and the British Government show that approximately eight hundred thousand British people live in Spain. Half of them live permanently (expats) and the same amount do occasionally, that is, in short periods of time or on holiday; in one word, in regular periods that allow them to have a property in Spain. Likewise, from a golf tourist point of view, the supremacy of the British market is undeniable.

In the last three years The UK has led again the ranking of foreign nationality house buyers, at least in Andalucía, following a historical tendency. Therefore, the connection between the recovery of the property market, especially upmarket houses, and the British buyer is a well-proven fact.

The recovery of the residential housing market in Spain has consolidated in figures and prices in the last year, although in a slower pace. In that sense, the residential product on the top range of the curve, luxury houses, have resisted in good shape over the recession years in contrast to other kind of houses. It is true that external factors have helped, such as tax and mortgage law reforms carried out in competitor countries. As

a report by Christies Real Estate pointed out a few years ago “the market of luxury houses is not affected by money flows or political changes, as there is less change that these worries determine the decision of UHNW (Ultra high-networth Individual) around the world to buy a house-trophy”.

Today, there are more millionaires that before the 2008 global crisis and they have increased more than 55% in number since 2000”. In the document published by the IMF, “Managing Real Estate Booms and Bust” in August 2012, the Organization pronounced on the relative importance of the Real Estate sector in world economy in contrast to other forms of investment and saving, stating “Real Estate is an important, if not the most important, storage of wealth in the economy. Additionally, the majority of households tend to hold wealth in their homes rather than in equities”.

As shown by the latest data from the tourism sector, traditional markets (British, German and Scandinavian) are going to lead demand. It seems obvious to deduce that the “Brexit” will have detrimental consequences for a sector which still finds difficulty in domestic policies to be competitive. In this sense, some obstacles found by possible middle-top of the range house buyers when they invest in Spain, such as legal insecurity caused by a deficient law on money laundering, difficulties in official procedures to get the NIE document, residence permits, and other local procedures related to Urban Planning and Building Works as well as new tax duties for foreign residents could be considered minor in comparison to the new scenario that we face when the United Kingdom leaves the EU. Un exaggerated depreciation of the Pound against the Euro as we have seen these days, as well as the need of bilateral agreements concerning certain benefits and existing social services, mainly health services; In my opinion, will force many of these “expats” to change their place of residence or even go back to the United Kingdom. This would have a multiplied effect regarding the increase of supply and a dividing effect regarding the prices on the secondary market. The

less influence of residents on the small and medium size local businesses is a fact that cannot be omitted; even if they stay in the country but with a depreciated currency.

Concerning the traditional tourist market and those who come to play golf in Spain in particular, I believe that only those business owners who can improve their competitiveness in costs could tackle the necessary price reduction with certain guarantees. This is caused by the loss of British purchasing power and the excessive dependence on this market.

Finally, I think I need to mention the consequences of “Brexit” for Gibraltar as it influences Sotogrande, which is a strategic area for residential, family, sport and upmarket tourism.

The limitation or even the no concession of residence permits as well as restrictions on working and professional activities of Gibraltarian citizens in Spain will have a negative effect on all those people who pretend to live in Gibraltar but live and/or work in the Gibraltar Field or in luxurious complexes in Sotogrande.

In light of this new situation, the Spanish Government will take the initiative.

However, more than could be done by governments to reduce the obstacles, it will be up to business owners to plan the relationship between their “resort” and the present and future scenario from a strategic point of view.

I think there are essential actions to be taken in the next decade. Investing in exploring and consolidating other markets, especially Germany and Scandinavian countries, revising the structure of costs thoroughly, analyzing quality levels and customer service, programming an improvement plan and modernizing golf courses design to make them more competitive over competitors destinations and finally, improving communication and market penetration policies and access to the final customer of XXI century.

L A Z A G A L E TA TIENE NUEVO EQUIPO DE GOLF El grupo La Zagaleta, decidió en 2015 iniciar las obras de remodelación de su primer campo con el objetivo de mejorar y modernizar el diseño paisajístico del recorrido y a la vez, hacerlo más sostenible medioambiental y económicamente. Pero el grupo, no sólo tenía en mente remodelar el campo, también el equipo que lo iba a dirigir.

Así, el pasado mes de Julio, se incorporó a La Zagaleta, un nuevo equipo directivo de golf, formado por José Canales, Carlos Rodiles y Nacho Castro. En esta entrevista nos explican cuales van a ser las funciones y objetivos del equipo.

In 2015, La Zagaleta group decided to start the restructuring of the first course, in order to improve and modernize the landscape design of the itinerary and at the same time make it environmentally and economically sustainable. However, the group not only considered remodeling the golf course but also the team to manage it. Thus, last July, a new golf management team formed by José Canales, Carlos Rodiles and Nacho Castro joined La Zagaleta. In this interview, they explain their roles and objectives of the team.

¿Con qué cargo te incorporas al equipo de golf de La Zagaleta?

Como Director General de Golf. Te diré que aceptar el trabajo fue una decisión complicada para mí y que tuve que meditar mucho. El concepto que tenía a nivel interno de La Zagaleta ha cambiado radicalmente y no tiene nada que ver con lo que me encontrado al llegar aquí. ¿Cómo ha sido el arranque?

El proyecto nuevo de golf empezó con la confección del equipo que comenzó a trabajar en Julio. He intentado rodearme de buenos profesionales y de gente joven y con iniciativa, para lo que se decidió contratar a Carlos Rodiles como Director Deportivo y a Nacho Castro como Greenkeeper. Hasta ahora todos nuestros esfuerzos han ido encaminados a la apertura del campo en óptimas condiciones.

Para Noviembre abriremos los segundos 9 hoyos reformados. ¿Cuál serán los objetivos del nuevo equipo?

What is your position in the golf team at La Zagaleta?

General Golf Manager. I can say that accepting this job was a complicated decision for me and I gave it a lot of thought.

The concept I had of La Zagaleta from inside has changed radically and it is very different from what I found when I got here.

How was the start?

The project started with the creation of a new team that joined in July. I have tried to surround myself with good professionals, young people with initiative, so I decided to hire Carlos Rodiles as Sport Manager and Nacho Castro as Greenkeeper. Up to now our efforts have been guided towards opening the golf course in the best condition. In November, we will open the second 9 holes that have been restructured.

What will be the objectives of the new team?

The objectives of the new golf management team of the Club will be to profes78 | GC#20

sionalize the golf course maintenance, offer a 5-star service to members and attract new ones, both owners and external members.

This involves changing our work system and renew it; for this Nacho with whom I had worked before was hired. The other main part of the club is the members, and we have Carlos Rodiles, who is going to work to provide them with better sport service. The idea is to change the club completely in a year.

All the industry is waiting anxiously for the works at Valderrama II. Can you reveal anything about the project?

The project Valderrama II is very exciting and I cannot tell you much. It is an enormous challenge and if you join the name of La Zagaleta to Valderrama, the project cannot fail and it holds the highest expectations. Regarding the timing of the project, I can say that the group is not involved in the urban procedures but it seems that they are going according to schedule. Once the licenses are obtained, it is only a question of starting.

Toda la industria está expectante con las obras del Valderrama II ¿Nos puedes adelantar algo del proyecto?

El proyecto Valderrama II es muy ilusionante pero del que se puede contar poco.

Es un reto inmenso, si unes la marca La Zagaleta con Valderrama, el proyecto no puede fallar y las expectativas son altísimas. En cuanto a los tiempos del proyecto, te diré que los trámites urbanísticos no dependen del grupo, pero parecen que van en tiempo. Una vez se tengan todos los permisos es empezar.

Háblanos un poco de tu trayectoria, Carlos.

Soy malagueño de nacimiento, aunque mi familia se trasladó a Madrid, siendo yo pequeño. He pasado mi juventud en Estados Unidos con lo que he vuelto a Málaga, prácticamente con más de veinte años. Hasta entonces he sido jugador Circuito Europeo más de 20 años. ¿Cuál será tu función como Director Deportivo de La Zagaleta Golf Club?

Abarca muchas cosas. Las principales son mejorar la comunidad social del club, esto implica las actividades de los socios, ayudarles con el nivel de juego y en general, proveer a los socios de servicios de calidad, en la tienda, caddy master y apoyo al profesional del Club, Diego Navarrete.

Pero principalmente en la creación de nuevos eventos y en la promoción de los ya existentes. También iré a torneos nacionales e internacionales en nombre del Club. El objetivo es que la expectativa de los socios, cuando se afiliaron a la Zagaleta, se cumpla y puedan disfrutar de un ambiente social a la altura del complejo.

Tell as a bit about your career, Carlos.

I was born in Málaga, although my family moved to Madrid when I was very little. I spent my youth in the US and I have come back to Spain at the age of 20. Until then, I have been a European Circuit player for more than 20 years.

What will be your role as Sport Manager at La Zagaleta Golf Club?

It covers many things. The most important is to improve the social community of the club. This involves improving the activities of members, helping them with their level in the game and in general, providing members with quality services, in the shop, caddy master and supporting the Club professional, Diego Navarrete. Buy mainly, creating new events and promoting the existing ones.

I will also go to national and international tournaments representing the Club.

Por lo que nos cuentas, ¿podemos deducir que en fechas próximas, La Zagaleta admitirá visitantes?

La no admisión de visitantes es algo que va en el ADN de la Zagaleta y aunque la decisión sobre este tema recae en la Asamblea de Socios, creo que el Club seguirá siendo completamente privado, tal y como se concibió. Aunque una de mis principales funciones es promocionar el Club interna y externamente, es decir, atraer a nuevos socios, la política seguirá siendo restrictiva ya que la calidad del Membership es muy importante para nosotros. Todo ello ayudará a incrementar la vida social del Club.

What are your projects for the Club?

There are many. For example, the proam will be carried out at the opening of the golf course after the remodeling. To give you an example, we already have an event with a member of Los Barrancos that will last two days. The objective is to offer a 5-star service.

As you are telling us, can we come to the conclusion that La Zagaleta will admit visitors soon?

The no admission of visitors is something included in the DNA of La Zagaleta and even though the decision on this matter is assumed by the Board of Members, I think that the Club will remain private as it was initially conceived, Although one of my responsibilities here is promoting the Club internally and externally, that is, attracting new members, the restrictive policy will remain as Membership quality is very important to us. All this will help to increase social life at the Club.

Soy ingeniero técnico agrícola y Máster por la Universidad de Ohio. Llevo 14 años de Head greenkeeper y he trabajado en Hideout, Naples (FL), Golf Costa Adeje, Kusadasi International Golf y Club de Golf Barcelona. Tell us about your career.

I am Agricultural Engineer and Master at Ohio University and for 14 years my career has been dedicated to working as a Head Greenkeeper in Hideout, Naples (FL), Golf Costa Adeje, Kusadasi International Golf and Club de Golf Barcelona. I am the new Greenkeeper at La Zagaleta and I joined the team in July.

Y ¿qué tal hasta ahora?

Está siendo toda una experiencia. En estos meses hemos estado centrados en el campo. La apertura de los 9 segundos hoyos se hará para Noviembre y para la primavera de 2017, el campo estará en unas condiciones espectaculares.

And how is it going so far?

It is quite an experience. These months we have focused on the golf course. The opening of the second 9 holes will take place in November and by spring 2017, the golf course will be in outstanding condition.

Y ¿cómo está el campo ahora?

Como te decía antes la apertura se hará en Noviembre y calculo que para la primavera alcanzaremos el grado máximo de mantenimiento. La sustitución de la hierba de los greenes por la Agrostis stolonifera Var. T1, ha hecho que estén magníficos y muy rápidos, hablo de una velocidad de la bola de 10,5 u 11 pies. En los tees y calles se ha cambiado por Bermuda 419, más apropiada para el clima del Sur. Y en algunos perfiles se ha sustituido por festuca arundínacea.

Pero además en La Zagaleta tenemos un alto grado de compromiso con el medioambiente. Este aspecto es muy importante para nosotros por lo que el objetivo medioambiental para el año que viene que es obtener la normativa ISO 1401 y el GEO certified.

And what’s the golf course like now?

As I told you before, the opening will take place in November and I calculate that by spring we will achieve the highest maintenance standard. Substituting the grass in the greens for Agrostis stolonifera Var. T1, has made fields look amazing and made them very fast, we are talking of 10.5 or 11 feet ball speed.

In tees and fairways it has been changed to Bermuda 419, which is more appropriate for the climate in the south. And on some edges it has been substituted by fetusca arundínacea.

Besides, La Zagaleta is highly committed to the environment. This is a very important aspect for us so, our environmental objective for next year will be to obtain the ISO 1401 regulation and the GEO certificate. ✪

LOS SMARTPHONES Y LOS OBJETOS PARA EL RECUERDO “Del salón en el ángulo oscuro, de su dueña tal vez olvidada, silenciosa y cubierta de polvo, veíase el arpa...” y una cámara de fotos, un despertador de sobremesa, una calculadora...

Los famosos versos del poeta bien podrían adaptarse a multitud de objetos que ven peligrar sus días, o que ya prácticamente se encuentran en el conjunto de cosas que habitan en museos y desvanes.

En apenas unos años, hemos podido ver el origen y la evolución de los primeros teléfonos móviles que, desde el minuto uno de su aparición, no han dejado de sorprendernos y de llevarnos con la lengua fuera detrás de sus impactantes mejoras. El incremento imparable de los dispositivos móviles de última generación y, el uso que los usuarios hacen de ellos, está rediseñando nuestro entorno.

Todas las herramientas y las aplicaciones que se desarrollan ven un gran auge, propiciado por las conexiones a internet, pero no todo es desarrollo de software que depende de una conexión a internet. Además de aplicaciones que ofrecen datos sobre el tiempo, las noticias o cualquier otra información que necesita de conectividad, también existen y se crean aplicaciones que recrean fielmente objetos cotidianos, y para rematar, estas aplicaciones pueden interactuar y ayudar a manejar objetos que, hasta hace poco, era impensable verlos implementados en un teléfono, como cámaras de fotos, teclados, auriculares, sensores de huellas, etc...

Este conjunto ingente de herramientas y aplicaciones han hecho de nuestros dispositivos móviles la mejor de las navajas suizas, que repletos de "gadgets”, han puesto entre las cuerdas a objetos de nuestro día a día, y muchos otros empiezan a sentirse amenazados.

tros hábitos y maneras de hacer algunas cosas. Así pues, no es difícil llegar a oír conversaciones que hace algún tiempo pudieran resultar extrañas: - Papá, ¿me puedes hacer una foto?

- Lo siento hijo, no tengo aquí el teléfono Incluso podemos ver gestos que jamás podríamos haber entendido de no ser por los smartphones, como mover los pulgares para decir "nos hablamos..." en clara referencia a chatear por WhatsApp, o separar en el aire los dedos índice y pulgar para indicar que hay que hacer zoom.

Las aplicaciones para móviles aparecen a un ritmo vertiginoso, resulta imposible imaginar una solución que ya no exista.

Se crean una media de 7.000 aplicaciones diarias. Entre toda esta descomunal oferta de posibles soluciones hay muy pocas privilegiadas que caen en gracia y se asientan como indispensables. También cabe señalar que la gran mayoría son Apps destinadas al consumo inmediato y su posterior eliminación, dada su naturaleza lúdica o de poca utilidad. Pero cuando una App viene para quedarse es capaz de desplazar a objetos que no pueden competir con ellas, como es el caso de objetos que el que escribe ha dejado de usar; el despertador de la mesita de noche, cámara de fotos y de vídeo, álbum de fotos de papel, GPS, planos de callejeros, calendario de sobremesa o de pared, agenda, calculadora, enciclopedia, diccionarios, linterna, reproductor de MP3, periódicos...

Las mentes inquietas de los técnicos y programadores navegan a diario entre mares de ideas y posibles soluciones que harán el día a día mucho más fácil, y de camino que les abriran las puertas del

boom comercial que eso supondría. De este modo, ¿quién puede predecir lo que está por venir?, ¿cuál es el siguiente objeto que ve sus días peligrar?. Tickets, entradas y tarjetas de embarque, video consolas, instrumental de todo tipo, grabadoras de audio... ¿Estamos preparados para empezar a despedirnos de mandos a distancia, tarjetas de crédito, DNI? También estamos atravesando una especie de ansiedad colectiva por medir absolutamente todo, lo que está propiciando la creación de todo tipo de sensores y medidores. En esta línea no será descabellado intuir que desde los dispositivos móviles se podrán medir nuestros mensajes corporales, temperatura, rendimientos cardiovasculares, etc, llegando incluso a poder diagnosticar enfermedades.

Además existen tecnologías que facilitan la creación de nuevas oportunidades para desarrollar herramientas encaminadas a la comunicación, obtención de datos, etc, convirtiendo a los móviles en soportes publicitarios que sin lugar a dudas desplazaran opciones convencionales de publicidad y comunicación. Existen plataformas que investigan en esa línea y aportan herramientas para abarcar este sector desde las comunicaciones vía WiFi. Desde esta opción se pueden establecer canales de comunicación en lo que se viene llamando marketing de proximidad con soluciones como las de www.wifi.pro. Las marcas se pelearán por nosotros, pero no más de lo que ya lo hacen, sólo que esta vez recomendarán productos que realmente encajen en las necesidades de la ciudadanía.✪
