e preguntan a menudo sobre mi oficio, y me refiero al del emprendedor del negocio editorial. En ese momento siempre se me viene a la cabeza el representante de un torero, el día de su alternativa, en una plaza de segunda, que le dice a su representado, suerte, valor y al toro que es una mona. Y yo, que en este caso soy el torero, me lanzo al ruedo para explicar lo complicado de este negocio. Hasta que me hacen “La Pregunta”, pero, ¿tu revista es gratuita, no? Pues sí es gratuita, como si eso le restara valor o como si las revistas y los periódicos de venta al público en este país no vivieran de lo mismo que la mía, los anunciantes. Mira, digo yo, en este país, no se venden periódicos, ni revistas, las grandes publicaciones no viven de la venta de los ejemplares en los quioscos, viven de la publicidad. Y es que el papel, me refiero a las publicaciones, se han convertido en un artículo de lujo. Con esto no pretendo anunciar la muerte del papel, ni mucho menos, de hecho, creo que el papel no morirá nunca, pretendo decir que la producción de contenidos en papel, es como un reloj suizo, de esos hechos artesanalmente y con complicaciones.

El papel necesita de mimo, te exige constantemente y necesita de muchas manos, redactores, fotógrafos, traductores, diseñadores, transportistas, impresores, distribuidores, y así hasta que llega a cualquiera de nosotros para que podamos sentarnos relajadamente a leernos nuestra revista preferida.

A nadie se le escapa ya estas alturas, que ha sido internet el que ha revolucionado el mundo, y los medios de comunicación no iban a ser menos.

Cualquier reconversión es dolorosa y deja sus cadáveres por el camino, así que siguiendo con el símil taurino, ¡que Dios reparta suerte!

Ahora, que Gary Player ha alcanzado su ochenta cumpleaños, podríamos perdonarle que estuviera recordando el pasado, a través de su carrera en los escenarios más emocionantes del mundo durante la que recorrió más de 14 millones de millas. Con sólo 1.68cm de altura, este diminuto golfista se ha convertido en una verdadera leyenda del golf, logrando un nivel de reconocimiento internacional reservado a muy pocos.

acido en Johannesburgo, es el pequeño de tres hermanos, jugó su primer torneo a los 14 años y 3 años después se hizo profesional. Después de su comienzo profesional en su tierra natal, Gary dio el salto a América, dónde jugó regularmente desde mediados de los cincuenta, siendo el jugador mejor pagado en 1961 y triunfando en 24 ocasiones. Pero Gary Player destaca por ser un jugador verdaderamente internacional, ganó el Open de Sudáfrica 13 veces y obtuvo el éxito en 7 ocasiones en el Open de Australia. Ganó el World Match-Play Championship, estando entre los 10 mejores de la clasificación desde 1968 hasta 1981, siendo aupado por Jack Nicklaus a la primera posición en 1969, 1970 y nuevamente en el 72. En 1959 a la edad de 23 años, y a pesar del doble bogey en el último hoyo, ganó el Open Championship en Muirfield. Todo esto siguió a más éxitos en 1968 y hasta 1974, año en el que se convirtió en el único jugador del Siglo XX en ganar el Open en tres décadas diferentes. Tres Chaquetas Verdes, se añadieron a su vestuario y fue el más notable cuando en 1978 comenzó la ronda final a siete golpes del líder Hubert Green. Pero otros honores se unieron a su palmarés cuando, sólo una semana más tarde logró remontar su déficit con 54 hoyos ganadores en el Open Championship. Pero su mayor hito llegó con las victorias en el US Open de 1965 y el Campeonato USPGA tanto en 1962 como en 1972. En el Masters de 1998 se convirtió en el jugador más viejo en pasar el corte rompiendo el récord de Sam Snead.

Conocido como una persona muy franca, Gary Player fue el primero en pedir pruebas de drogas en el Tour y fue tildado de traidor por el Gobierno Sudafricano, cuando trajo tanto el tenis negro profesional, con Arthur Ashe, como al golfista Lee Trevino para jugar en ese país. Más polémicas surgieron con las acusaciones de que el campo que el jugador había diseñado en Birmania había sido incautado a los agricultores sin compensación alguna, pero, desde luego Gary Player, nunca tuvo nada que ver con la forma en que se adquirió el terreno y, en cualquier caso, las acusaciones nunca fueron probadas.

Los intereses comerciales de Gary Player son muchos y variados e incluyen la organización de eventos, publicaciones, su propia bodega de vino y una línea de ropa. Mientras, su empresa de diseño de campos de golf ha concluido más de 300 proyectos en 35 países de los cinco continentes. Gary Player Design tiene una política medioambiental estricta que insiste en minimizar el impacto medioambiental y la especificación de los materiales de construcción ambientalmente sostenibles. Su mayor preocupación es sobre el agua, declarando: "las técnicas de conservación del agua no sólo son nuestra responsabilidad fundamental, sino que son importantes para la industria del golf y su crecimiento global” Pero tal vez, el mayor legado de Gary Player sea la Fundación que el jugador creó en 1983 con la intención de proporcionar educación, alimentación, atención médica y actividades deportivas a los niños desfavorecidos que viven en los suburbios de Johannesburgo. Desde entonces, ha crecido hasta convertirse en global, donando más de 50 millones de dólares en apoyo a organizaciones benéficas para niños y la expansión de las oportunidades educativas en todo el mundo. La financiación para estos proyectos proviene de eventos de Gary Player Invitational que se celebran cada año en Estados Unidos, China, Europa y África del Sur y son torneos pro-am por parejas en los que participan famosos y golfistas profesionales, tanto del PGA Tour y el Champions Tour, como destacados empresarios.

Gary Player es conocido tanto por su dedicación a los principios de excelencia como lo es por sus logros en el golf y es reconocido como un perfeccionista sin concesiones, que se conforma sólo con lo mejor.

Hoy en día dedica su tiempo a su rancho en Sudáfrica, donde el jugador es aclamado mundialmente por la cría de caballos de carreras pura sangre y como Broadway Flyer, que corrió en el Derby de 1994.

En el mundo actual la palabra "leyenda" está muy de moda y a veces es utilizada a la ligera, pero, cuando se aplica a Gary Player, vuelve sin duda a su verdadero significado.

While sitting in his favourite armchair, during celebrations marking his recent 80th birthday, Gary Player could be forgiven for reminiscing over a golfing career during which he travelled over 14 million miles thrilling galleries the world over. A mere 1.68m in height this diminutive golfer has become a true legend of the game and achieved a level of international acclaim reserved for the few.

orn in Johannesburg, the youngest of three children, Player played his first round of golf at the age of 14 and three years later joined the professional ranks. Having cut his teeth in his native country Gary made the long journey to America where he played regularly from the mid-fifties, won the money list in 1961, and eventually triumphed on 24 occasions. Noted for being a truly international player he won the South African Open 13 times and was successful in the Australian Open on 7 occasions. He won the World Match-Play Championships and was in the top-10 of the world golf rankings from their inception in 1968 until 1981 being piped to the top spot by Jack Nicklaus in 1969, 1970 and again in 1972. I n 1959 at the age of 23, and despite a double-bogey at the final hole, he won the Open Championship at Muirfield. With further successes in 1968 and 1974 he became the only golfer in the 20th century to win the Open in three different decades. Three Masters jackets were added to his wardrobe the most notable being in 1978 when he started the final round seven strokes behind the leader Hubert Green yet took the title by the slimmest of margins when he birdied seven of the final 10 holes for a back nine of 30 and a total of 64. Further honours were added just one week later when he managed to overturn a 10-shot deficit after 54 holes to triumph in the Tournament of Champions.

His major championship tally reached nine with victories in the 1965 US Open and the USPGA Championship in both 1962 and 1972. In strong winds at the 1998 Masters he became the oldest player to make the cut breaking the 25-year old record held by Sam Snead.

Known as a very outspoken person Gary Player was the first to call for drug testing on all tours and was branded a traitor by the South African Nationalist Government when he brought both black tennis professional Arthur Ashe and golfer Lee Trevino to play in that country. Further controversy arose when accusations were made that the land on 12 | GC#16

which Player designed a course in Burma had been seized from farmers without any compensation but, as the designer, Player had nothing to do with how the land was acquired and, in any event, the accusations were never substantiated.

Gary Player’s business interests are many and varied and include organising events, publishing, his own wine label and a range of clothes while his golf course design company has completed over 300 projects in 35 countries on five continents. Gary Player Design has a strict environmental policy which insists on minimising site disturbance and specifying environmentally sensitive building materials. His greatest concern is about water and he is on record as saying, “Water conservation techniques are not only our fundamental responsibility, but are important to the industry of golf and the global growth of the wonderful game of golf, as real water savings also mean real cost savings.”

Maybe Gary Player’s greatest legacy will be the Player Foundation which he founded in 1983 with the intention of providing education, nutrition, medical care and athletic activities for disadvantaged children living in the suburbs of Johannesburgh. Since then it has grown into a global activity which has donated over $50 million in support of children’s charities and the expansion of educational opportunities worldwide. Funding for these heart warming projects come from Gary Player Invitational events which take place each year in America, China, Europe and South Africa and are pro-am tournaments pairing celebrities and professional golfers, from both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour, with prominent businessmen.

Gary Player is known as much for his dedication to the principles of excellence as he is for his golfing accomplishments and is recognised as an uncompromising perfectionist who settles for nothing but the best. His impeccable set of values, together with an insistence on fitness and health, are admired throughout the world.

Nowadays his leisure time is spent on his ranch in South Africa where the Gary Player Stud Farm bathes in a worldwide acclaim for breeding top-class thoroughbred racehorses including Broadway Flyer which ran in the 1994 Derby.

In today’s world the word “Legend” is bandied about like snuff at a wake but, when applied to Gary Player, it unquestionably reverts to its true meaning. ✪

Construido el reverso del magnífico campo de prácticas, se ha aportado “Ray-gras” a las plataformas, convirtiendo esta zona en una de las mejores, completada con zona cubierta, ya que, si bien en la zona llueve poco, sí que hay vientos y sobre todo calor y sol, más aún, si pensamos en los más pequeños, adscritos ya la Escuela Tutelada de Federación Valenciana de Golf. Todas estas mejoras tendrán su colofón con otra nueva zona de Chipping y Pitching anexa al tee del 1 de campo Levante, haciendo del resort, un lugar ideal para entrenar en todo tipo de circunstancias y a todos los niveles.

A todo ello, se unirá la reforma de su Casa Club, mobiliario, entoldados, comunicaciones, etc., y es que, en un campo de golf nunca se termina de trabajar, hay que estar constantemente mimando el campo para obtener los estándares de calidad que Meliá ya tiene en sus hoteles.

A working plan has been set out in markets and segments, with improvements currently underway at both courses and the practice areas based on modifying, repairing and resolving all problems related to irrigation, sprinklers and pumps; improving water quality, a key nutrient for the healthy life of introduced grasses (“Bermuda Princess” for the fairways, tees and roughs, and “Agrostis Providence” on the greens); and gravelling, aerating and micro-aerating to improve the playing surface.

One key aspect of this kind of design is still pending: the bunkers. All these improvements will culminate in another new chipping and putting area adjacent to the first tee of the Levante course, thus ensuring the resort is the ideal place to practise in all kinds of circumstances and for players of all levels.

In addition, the clubhouse will be renovated with new furniture, awnings, communications, etc., because work never ends at a golf course. It needs to be pampered constantly to match the quality standards that Meliá offers at its hotels. ✪

ESE NO ES EL SONIDO DE UNA PUÑALADA.

L

as suposiciones son una constante en la vida y en el golf, hacemos suposiciones y además las creemos como ciertas.

Leía unos meses atrás, una anécdota del recientemente fallecido Christopher Lee, un actor polifacético que nos aterrorizó en Drácula, nos asombró como Sherlock Holmes y más recientemente retomó su popularidad con el papel de Saruman en la saga El Señor de los Anillos que dirigió Peter Jackson.

Jackson estaba explicando una escena a su equipo, en un momento determinado les contaba cuál debería ser el sonido cuando una persona es apuñalada por la espalda. Al oírle hablar y describir el sonido Lee le corrigió "ese no es el sonido

que emite un ser humano al morir de una puñalada en la espalda".

Jackson se lo tomó a broma contestándole “¿Acaso tienes alguna idea del tipo de ruido que hace una persona cuando se la apuñalan?”. Fue entonces cuando Christopher Lee le comentó que había sido capitán en una unidad de agentes secretos llamada el Ministerio de la Guerra poco Caballerosa, sobrenombre por el que se conocía a la Special Operations Executive, que durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial llevaba a cabo labores de espionaje, sabotaje y reconocimiento en la Europa ocupada.

Después de investigar e indagar, Peter Jackson sorprendido, descubrió que era

cierto y que incluso a día de hoy, las operaciones en las que participó Lee, seguían siendo un secreto.

Las ideas preconcebidas, las suposiciones, los paradigmas sociales, educativos y personales, nos limitan, no sólo en nuestro golf sino en todos los aspectos de la vida, impidiéndonos avanzar por el camino correcto.

Las suposiciones, nos hacen creer que el putt de medio metro que vamos a golpear, se puede hacer deprisa y corriendo, sin seguir nuestra rutina, incluso golpeando con la cara contraria del putter… fallándolo. Recuerdo a un joven jugador profesional de una calidad excepcional al que acompañé como caddie en un torneo de 4 días. El primer día al fallar el primer golpe desde el tee de salida del hoyo 1, se volvió y me dijo “¡ya no paso el corte!”.

Muchas son las herramientas que los coaches utilizamos para romper estas y otras limitaciones, se las contaré…en el próximo número de esta magnífica revista. No falte, por favor, ¡paso lista! ✪

l Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, emprendió en Abril de 2012, una profunda renovación del campo, primeramente de los primeros nueve hoyos de su recorrido, para más tarde, en Octubre de 2014, emprender la reforma de los segundos nueve hoyos terminada en Octubre de 2015 y estrenados por algunos de los miembros de su Junta Directiva y otros socios que han estado implicados en el proceso de reforma. Rediseñados por Kyle Phillips y construidos por Garden & Golf, se cierra así uno de los capítulos más importantes en los anales de la historia del club, dando por concluida los principales aspectos de la renovación del diseño de 1968 de Robert Trent Jones.

Pero además del propio rediseño del recorrido se ha efectuado mejoras en aspectos fundamentales del campo como el laminado de arena en calles y laminado de tierra vegetal en roughs, renovado todos los complejos de Tees incluidos el drenaje y el laminado de arena sembrándolos con agrostis, todos los bunkers incluidos sus drenajes y los sandtrapper,

Kyle, que es hoy en día, uno de los más prestigiosos diseñadores de campos de golf con proyectos en todo el mundo, ha respetado y mejorado los mejores aspectos del diseño original del campo y modificado el diseño para crear un nuevo campo que no solo continuara deleitando a los socios, si no que, una vez más, fuera un reto para los jugadores profesionales. Aún pendientes de la actualización y mejoras del área de prácticas, Las Brisas será capaz de ofrecer una completa experiencia de golf de primer nivel a sus Socios.

Y es que hay veces que nada puede salir mal, la unión de un club legendario en Europa como Las Brisas, que ha albergado dos Copas de Mundo y cuatro torneos del Circuito Europeo y Kyle Phillips, el discípulo aventajado del que fuera considerado como uno de los diseñadores más importantes de todos los tiempos y artífice del diseño original del campo, Robert Trent Jones, ha dado sus frutos y de qué forma.

n April 2012 Royal Las Brisas Golf Club embarked on a major renovation of the course, first the front nine and later, in October 2014, beginning work on the second nine, which was completed in October 2015 and christened by members of the executive committee and other members who had been involved in the refurbishment.

Re-designed by Kyle Phillips and built

by Garden & Golf, the project closed one of the most important chapters in the club’s history, thus concluding the main aspects of this revamp of the 1968 design by Robert Trent Jones.

In addition to the course re-design, several other key aspects have been improved: rolling the fairways with sand and the rough with soil; renovating all the tee areas, including drainage and sand lamination, re-seeding them with agrostis; all the bunkers, including drainage and sand-traps; all the greens, following USGA-recommended specifications; the whole irrigation system; and the drainage system on all the fairways.

esde que, a principios del presente 2015, Calanova Golf Club, estrenara nuevo equipo de gestión, el objetivo estaba claro: posicionar al campo como uno de los recorridos preferidos de La Costa del Sol. Para ello se emprendieron pro­ fundas reformas en el campo que han ido desde nuevos greenes, bunkers, drenajes o la arena, todo ello para que el mantenimiento del campo estuviera a un magnífico

nivel, hasta su flota de buggies, la señalización interior o la vegetación con la plantación de más de 500 árboles.

Pero estas reformas que persiguen la excelencia del campo, no cesan, y en este sentido las últimas mejoras son la zona de prácticas con un nuevo putting green de 900 m2 situado en una zona elevada entre el tee del 1 y la nueva casa. Casa club, cuyas obras se encuentran ya en un avan-

zado estado y que se inaugurará en 2016, siendo una de las actuaciones más ambiciosas de la nueva empresa gestora. ver since a new management team took over at Calanova Golf Club at the start of 2015, the objective has been clear: to position it as one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular courses.

To that end, a major renovation of the course was undertaken, highlighted by new greens, bunkers, drainage and sand, all to ensure that maintenance is kept at a magnificent level and also including the buggy fleet, internal sign-posting and vegetation – with more than 500 trees planted.

Es uno de esos jugadores que escribieron la historia del golf español, durante los setenta y ochenta. Proveniente de una familia humilde, empezó a jugar al golf como caddie y por necesidad, la de ayudar a una familia con pocos ingresos en la que era el cuarto de siete hermanos.

Hoy, cinco décadas después y ya retirado del golf nos concede una entrevista en la que nos cuenta todo sobre sus días de golf.

¿

Cómo empezaste en el golf?

Pues como el 99 por ciento de los chicos de aquella época, por necesidad. La mía era una familia de origen humilde, mi padre era maestro albañil, con siete hijos y pocos ingresos. Nos quedaba cerca el club de campo y mi hermano Gerardo y yo empezamos a hacer de caddie, yo tenía unos 9 años y estuve haciéndolo hasta los quince. ¿Cuándo te diste cuenta que podrías vivir del golf?

Fue cuando volví a hacer de caddie a los 17 años. Me di cuenta de que le pegaba mejor que los otros chicos así que empecé a involucrarme cada día más y a dar clases. Hasta que con 19 años me hice profesional, a los 21 gané mi primer torneo como profesional era el año 1969 y en el 70 mi primer Campeonato de España en El Saler, recuerdo que llovía a cántaros. ¿Qué diferencias encuentras entre el golf de cuando empezaste al de ahora?

Pues la principal diferencia para mí es que era otra España y otros españoles. En aquella época éramos unos 8 ó 10 los que íbamos a jugar el Circuito Europeo, Manolo Piñero, Balbuena, Antonio Garrido, Manolo Ballesteros, entre otros. Era una época dura y todos los que viajábamos para jugar al golf estábamos muy unidos y nos ayudábamos. Recuerdo cómo llegábamos a cualquier sitio a jugar y mientras

que uno buscaba una pensión, los otros guardábamos las maletas. Era como ya he dicho una época dura pero nos lo pasábamos muy bien.

Y tu aventura americana, ¿Qué tal fue?

Bueno, es que aquello es otro mundo.

Cuando ya has cumplido los 50 y empiezas en el Circuito Senior, aquí, me refiero a Europa, te tienes que empezar otra vez a buscar la vida, allí eres un ídolo. Como jugador Ryder Cup, tenía 10 años de exención para jugar el PGA, así que allí me fui. La verdad es que allí estaba muy bien a nivel profesional porque el Senior en EE.UU. es muy importante, pero a nivel personal estaba lejos de mi familia y no me gustaba mucho esa situación.

“Hay campos buenos o malos.

Cuando juegas bien, te gustan, cuando juegas mal, te enfadas” Que nos dices de tu faceta de diseñador de campos, ¿Qué campos son diseño tuyo?

Pues que es un trabajo apasionante. Sobre todo para los que hemos jugado profesionalmente y por todo el mundo. Te permite hacer los hoyos que has soñado

y repetir los que te parecen excepcionales de otros campos. Pero también te diré que es muy difícil encontrar un terreno que tenga las características necesarias para realizar esos hoyos soñados. En Badajoz, ayudé a terminar el diseño de Golf Guadiana, también Añoreta Golf, que, en principio era un diseño espectacular pero desgraciadamente y en mi opinión, quedó al final bastante deslucido con respecto al proyecto inicial por el paso de una autovía y Baviera Golf que es un campo pequeñito pero muy divertido.

Tienes 3 hijos y dos de ellos son golfistas, ¿Cuánta culpa tienes tú de eso?

Te diré sinceramente que ninguna. Si mis hijos han decidido seguir ese camino ha sido una decisión totalmente personal, nunca les anime a ello. Pero claro, también han crecido en el ambiente del golf, cuando eran pequeños se venían al campo conmigo y cogían los palos. Ahora, algunas veces pienso que quizás tenía que haberles dado algunos consejos pero ya son mayores y ahora toman sus propias decisiones, como es natural. Son dos chavales fantásticos, pero sobre todo educados, respetuosos y lo más importante, buenas personas.

Eres madrileño, pero llevas ya muchos años en Andalucía, ¿Por qué decidiste quedarte?

Me encanta Andalucía, siempre me ha gustado y llevo ya 28 años aquí. Veníamos GC#16 | 37

de vacaciones siempre a Torremolinos y yo siempre había dicho que me retiraría aquí. ¿Con qué campo te quedas de los de la zona?

Quiero decir primero que no hay campos buenos o malos. Cuando juegas bien, te gustan, cuando juegas mal, te enfadas.

Así que partiendo de esto, me gusta mucho Sotogrande y Valderrama tienen las condiciones perfectas para que el jugador desarrolle su juego, también me gusta La Reserva y El Cortesín, pero para mí son demasiado largos. ¿Crees que la Costa del Golf, como la llaman aquí, tiene potencial para crear nuevos golfistas de élite?

Desde luego si no es aquí, no será en ningún sitio. Aquí hay mucha afición por la gran concentración de campos. En la zona de Sotogrande, es encomiable la labor de La Cañada, como campo municipal, en el que si te vas un día, ves a los chavales de 12 a 16 años y tienen un swing espectacular. Esto a la larga propiciará el que salgan jugadores buenos.

En tu larga trayectoria como jugador, ¿Qué recuerdo guardas con más cariño?

Tengo muchos, sobre todo de cuando era joven. El primer torneo que gané como profesional, me trae unos recuerdos buenísimos y entrañables. Pero la verdad es que tengo la suerte de haber tenido muchos y buenos momentos en mi vida profesional, mi primer Campeonato de España, la primera vez que me seleccionaron para la Ryder Cup, mi primer torneo en el Circuito Europeo en Italia o cuando ganamos Piñero y yo en Méjico el Campeonato del Mundo.

Has jugado con los mejores del mundo, ¿Quién te ha impresionado más?

He jugado con los más grandes, verdaderas leyendas como Faldo, Nicklaus, Gary Player, etc, pero el jugador que más me ha impresionado ha sido Tom Watson. La primera vez que jugué con él fue en el año 1972, en un Open Británico en Troon,

luego he jugado con el en la Ryder Cup y en el Champion Tour en mis años en Estados Unidos y me seguía impresionando como cuando lo vi por primera vez, tiene el swing que me hubiera gustado tener a mí.

Y de los españoles, ¿Con quién tuviste más “feeling”?

Soy una persona bastante fácil de llevar, por lo menos eso creo. Me llevaba bien con todos, pero con Manolo Piñero especialmente porque hemos compartido kilómetros y torneos juntos a lo largo de nuestras carreras deportivas. ¿Qué te parece la candidatura de España para la Ryder Cup en Cataluña?

Me parece una gran oportunidad para el golf español. Creo que en España no se le da su sitio al golf, sobre todo te das cuenta cuando vas a EE.UU o algunos países en Europa, aquí todavía es minoritario.

Y ya por último, ¿Y qué haces actualmente? ¿Tienes alguna afición que no sea el golf?

(Rie) Ahora hago de jubilado. Ya no me motiva la competición, ahora se lo dejo a los jóvenes, como mis hijos. Voy dos o tres veces por semana a dar bolas y los fines de semana juego con amigos. Con respecto a un hobbie, te diré que nunca he podido hacer por mi profesión lo que me apetecía y a eso es a lo que me dedico ahora, hago lo que quiero. ¿Qué te parece?

He is one of the key stars who wrote Spanish golf’s history during the 1970s and 1980s. He came from a modest family background, the fourth of seven children, and began playing golf as a caddie and to help augment his family’s limited income.

Today, five decades later and now retired from the game, in this interview with Golf Circus he looks back at his golfing days.

era and all of us who travelled to play golf were very united and helped each other. I remember arriving somewhere to play, and while one of us went looking for a hostel the others took care of the luggage. It was, as I said, a tough era but we had a really good time.

And your American adventure… how did that go?

Well, that’s another world. When you’ve turned 50 and begin on the seniors tour – here, I mean in Europe – you have to start all over again and make a living. Over there you’re treated like an idol. As a Ryder Cup player I had a 10-year exemption to play on the US Tour, so I headed over there. The truth is that on a professional level it went well for me, because the US Seniors Tour is extremely important, but on a personal level I was a long way from my family and I didn’t like that situation very much.

What can you tell us about your facet as a golf course designer? What are the courses you have designed?

It’s exciting work, especially for those of us who have played professionally and around the world. It enables you to create holes you’ve dreamed about and repeat others at different courses which you’ve thought were exceptional. However, I would also say that it’s difficult to find a plot that has the necessary features to create those dream holes. In Badajoz, I helped finish the Golf Guadiana design; also Añoreta Golf, which at first was a spectacular design but which unfortunately, in my opinion, has ended up fairly tarnished in relation to the initial project, due to the highway crossing and Baviera Golf, which is a small course but a very enjoyable one.

H

ow did you begin in golf?

Well, like 99 per cent of the boys in those days, for necessity. My family had modest origins – my father was a master builder – with seven children and limited income. The golf club was nearby and my brother Gerardo and I began caddying. I was nine at the time and continued until I was 15.

When did you realise you could make a living from golf?

It was when I returned to caddying at 17. I realised I could hit the ball better than the other boys so I became more and more involved and took classes. I turned pro at 19 and won my first tournament as a professional in 1969 and in 1970 my first Spanish Championship, at El Saler. I remember it was raining in buckets.

What do you find are the differences between golf when you started and now?

The main difference for me is that it was another Spain and other Spaniards. In that era we were eight or 10 playing the European Tour. Manolo Piñero, Salvador Balbuena, Antonio Garrido and Manolo Ballesteros, among others. It was a tough

You have three children, two of whom are golfers. How much are you to blame for that?

I would honestly say not at all. For my sons who decided to follow this path it was a completely personal decision; I never encouraged them to do it. But of course they also grew up in a golfing ambience; when they were young they came with me to the course and started playing. Now, sometimes I think I should have given them some advice but they’re men now and make their own decisions, which is normal. They are great lads, above all else well-mannered, respectful and, most important, good people.

You are from Madrid but have been living in Andalucía for many years. Why did you decide to stay?

I love Andalucía; I’ve always liked it and I’ve been here for 28 years. We always came on holiday to Torremolinos and I always said I would retire here.

What course in the area stands out for you?

I would like to say first that there are no good or bad courses.

When you play well, you like it; when you play poorly, you get annoyed. So, from that starting point, I like Sotogrande a lot and Valderrama has the perfect conditions for a player to develop their game. I also like La Reserva and El Cortesín but for me they are too long.

Do you believe the Costa del Golf, as it’s known here, has the potential to develop new elite golfers?

Definitely – if not here it wouldn’t be anywhere. There are a lot of golfers because of the number of courses here. In So-

togrande, the work of La Cañada is highly commendable, as a municipal (public) course where on any one day you will see youngsters from 12 to 16 with a spectacular swing. This means that in the long term some very good players will be emerging.

Over the course of your career, what is your fondest memory?

I have many, especially when I was young. The first tournament I won as a professional brings back some really good and fond memories. The truth is I’ve had the good fortune to have had many good moments in my professional life… my first Spanish Championship, the first time I was selected for the Ryder Cup, my first tournament on the European Tour, in Italy, and when Piñero and I won the World Cup in Mexico.

You’ve played with the world’s best golfers. Who impressed you most?

I’ve played with the finest, true legends like Faldo, Nicklaus, Gary Player, etc., but the player who has most impressed me is Tom Watson. The first time I played with him was in 1972, in the British Open at Troon. After that I played with him in the Ryder Cup and on the Champions Tour when I was in the United States, and I’m still as impressed as when I saw him for the first time. He has the kind of swing I would have liked for myself.

And the Spaniards… with whom did you have the most “feeling”?

I’m an easy person to get on with – or at least that’s what I think. I get on well with everyone, but especially with Manolo Piñero because we have shared many kilometres and tournaments together during our sporting careers.

What do you think about Spain’s candidature for the Ryder Cup? I think it’s a great opportunity for Spanish golf. I believe that in Spain golf doesn’t have its rightful place. You especially realise this when you go to the US or some countries in Europe – here it’s still a minority sport.

And finally… what are you currently doing? Do you have any other non-golfing interests?

(Laughs) I’m now a pensioner. I’m not motivated by competition – now I leave that to the younger ones, like my sons. I hit some balls two or three times a week, and on the weekends I play with friends.

As for a hobby, I would have to say that I have never been able to do what I feel like doing, because of my profession, and that’s what I do now – whatever I want to. What do you think about that? ✪

El hoyo 6, es un par tres con un tee en lo alto desde el que se divisan tres comarcas diferentes y toda La Vega de Antequera. El green de este hoyo se encuentra a unos 140 metros de distancia con una caída libre de unos 40 metros aproximadamente. Este par tres es espectacular. El hoyo 13 es totalmente único en el diseño de campos de golf. Tiene dos lagos justamente en frente del tee de salida de los profesionales, lago y medio en frente del tee de salida de los jugadores amateurs y un lago a la derecha del tee de las mujeres amateurs y juveniles. Luego hay un área de caída para la bola y el segundo golpe al green está a unos 120 metros pero en frente del green hay otro lago. El green está perfectamente diseñado con desnivel, caídas y trampas de arena alrededor para darle un toque único. El jugador apreciará la belleza lograda en esta calle la cual seguro estará en boca de los golfistas muy pronto. Igualmente destacable es el hoyo 15 al pie de la sierra de La Magdalena.

Además el campo de golf cuenta con pista de prácticas iluminada, casa club con restaurante y cafetería, tienda, vestuarios, cuarto de palos, alquiler de buggies y carritos de mano, alquiler de palos de golf, putting green y pitching green, proporcionando todos los servicios que el jugador pueda necesitar. Otro de los puntos fuertes de Antequera Golf es el respeto por la naturaleza, y es que no podría ser de otra manera, en un campo rodeado de naturaleza y en el que conviven gran variedad de plantas aromáticas, infinidad de árboles frutales y diversas especies animales.

Meticulously designed by dual Ryder Cup winner José María Cañizares, the course is a par-72 extending over 6,000 metres, with 18 holes and 18 lakes comprising a cycle of water that covers the whole playing area and where no hole is like any other, thus enabling players to use all the clubs in their bags.

The lakes are a structural element of the fairways and consequently environmentally friendly, as the water they store from rainfall is used to irrigate the course throughout the year. Each fairway ahs been designed so players can enjoy their game to the fullest. The most iconic holes include the third, a short par-four (295 metres) with a lake in front, which offers up a fairly easy fairway but also requires accuracy and technique. The sixth is a spectacular par-three with an elevated tee that offers views of three distinctive landscapes and the whole Antequera meadow. The green on this hole is 140 metres away, with a landing area approximately 40 metres downhill. The 13th is truly unique in golf course design. It has two lakes right in front of the professionals’ tee, a lake and a half in front of the amateurs’ tee, and a lake at the right of the women amateurs and children’s tee. he European Tour provides a veritable honey-pot for golfers lucky enough to join its elite ranks. Last season the tour travelled to countries as far afield as China, Thailand, Australia, Dubai and Singapore, and provided a feeding trough of almost gargantuan proportions. Yet, for the lower ranks, admission to that banquet requires a mixture of skill, determination and nerve coupled with a degree of luck and, finally, success at the dreaded Q-School.

In November the PGA Catalunya golf courses were alive with 156 hopefuls who had arrived for what must be the most heart-breaking tournament on the European Tour calendar: the annual Qualifying School. These young, and not so young, joyful souls each believed that the heartbreak, just around the corner, was the lot of the other fellow. Each of them believed they were on the highway to stardom while the despair, just around the corner, was the lot of the other fellow. Yet the reality of the matter would be very different for the majority of the 156 hopefuls as only 25 of the golfers in question would win Tour Cards. The experienced professionals mixed with the raw recruits when they gathered together to play six rounds of golf, the results of which would determine their immediate, if not their long-term, futures. Fading stars, who once experienced the dizzy heights of Ryder Cup honours, joined other fading stars who had won European Tour events and all were battling to save careers that had, for reasons unknown, taken a severe nosedive. They were joined by players who have enjoyed life at the pinnacle of the amateur golf tree and they, in turn, were joined by players taking the first tentative and nervous steps in the jungle which is the life of the touring professional.

Some of the cast bore very familiar names. Edoardo Molinari, who played in the 2010 Ryder Cup, joined 32 former Tour winners who all found themselves back at the foot of the ladder as they set out in their quest for the Holy Grail, which is regaining membership of the European Tour. 108-holes requiring absolute and total concentration, each shot crucial for one serious mistake and all would be over; one ill-judged swish of a club and the heartbreak would, almost certainly, become yours.

The stress caused by the swings and roundabouts of the early rounds was plain for all to see. Players like Ireland’s Ruaidhri McGee who followed a brilliant 64 with a heartbreaking 87: players like Mark Foster who was attempting to extend his fourteen year unbroken run on the European Tour. Players afraid to commit to a shot, moving away from the ball on two or three occasions, fearing that another mistake would cause their dreams to lie in tatters. The fear of failure drifted in the air like a poisonous cloud, touching each player at some stage, until settling on the unfortunates whose nerves cracked under the strain. Players whose moist hands gave that little twitch when facing a two-foot putt or, maybe, lost control of the driver and sent the ball, and their aspirations, sailing out-of-bounds.

After six rounds of golf torture, the Qualifying School finally came to a conclusion and the names of the successful candidates were declared. The few were in seventh heaven while the

many were left to come to terms with the extent of their failure.

The shattered hopes of the many, who just seven days earlier were convinced they were on the crest of a headline making career as millionaire members of the European Tour, could be found in the debris scattered around the scoreboard. Many sad faces, some streaming with tears others ashen-coloured, stared through listless eyes at the scores shown after their names.

Each, no doubt, could vividly recall the destructive shot which brought about their personal downfall; the exciting thoughts of championship titles, together with fame and fortune, proved no more than a mirage. Such is the reality facing those who fancy their chances of dining at the High Table in the exclusive club of touring professional golfers known as The European Tour.

There is nobody quite as optimistic as a golfer; every single one I know expects that, “The next round will be different”.

Quite why that should be, I have not yet figured out! ✪

EL ESCULTOR DE LAS MANOS DE SEVE

Gaditano, nacido en La Línea de La Concepción y Licenciado en Bellas Artes, Juan Soler, es un artista multidisciplinar, experimenta con los materiales, a la vez que cultiva una iconografía variada, trabajando en series en varias disciplinas unidas por un hilo argumental, procurando narrar una historia, un momento. Y así, en una serie de esculturas, bautizadas como “My Hands”, es como plasmó las manos de nuestro más ilustre golfista, Severiano Ballesteros.

¿

En qué está trabajando ahora?

Mi último trabajo, ha sido “MARENOSTRUM”. En esta pintura trato el tema del desarraigo, la ruptura con los orígenes, causada por la emigración, especialmente la forzada; tomando como referencia el cruce del Estrecho, aunque se trata de un problema universal, extrapolable a cualquier época y latitud.

Aquí, como en otros trabajos, procuro realizar una narración completa, mostrar la idea desde diferentes ángulos, para hacerla más asequible al observador: pintura, escultura, video instalación, fotografía y texto. Paralelamente acabo de empezar el diseño de una escenografía para teatro y trabajo en la ilustración de un poema, para “Marenostrum”. ¿Cuál es su relación con el golf?

Bueno, juego al golf desde la adolescencia.

Un amigo de la familia me regaló un juego de palos y eso fue la apoteosis; para aprender llegue a hacer cuatro recorridos andando en un día. Me sangraban los pies y tenía toda clase de heridas en las manos. Entonces sólo se hablaba de Seve, nuestro héroe nacional, que iba sentando cátedra por todo el mun-

do. Siempre me ha sorprendido el cariño con que era tratado por los aficionados británicos. Verdaderamente revoluciono el mundo del golf y creó una legión de seguidores entre los que, por supuesto, yo era su más rendido admirador. Luego, durante la larga época de estudios y los años subsiguientes, tuve que dejar de practicarlo, pero lo retomé a la primera que tuve ocasión y sigo practicándolo, en ocasiones con bastante frecuencia. Otras veces, debido al trabajo, menos, y sufro por ello. Me apasiona el golf. Es el único momento en que consigo abstraerme de todo lo que me es cotidiano. Cuando juego, consigo olvidar, durante tres o cuatro horas, hasta los problemas más pertinaces. ¿Cómo conoce a Seve y cuál fue su relación con él?

Un día, mientras realizaba una escultura que debía ser un trofeo de golf para un torneo celebrado en San Roque Club, mi hermano me presentó a Seve. La escultura, que le representaba realizando un golpe forzado, serviría para premiar anualmente a los ganadores de un proam al estilo “Rider Cup”, entre los socios británicos y españoles, bajo marchamo de Hugo Boss. A Seve le emociono el trofeo y, de repente, me vi sentado a su mesa, dirigiéndole unas palabras en la entrega del trofeo. A partir de entonces, coincidimos en varias ocasiones y realicé otros trabajos para él. Me enorgullece enormemente saber que mi trabajo está unido a una persona tan importante en el panorama del deporte mundial. Para mí, un ser excepcional que marcó toda una época.

Háblenos de “MY HANDS”, la serie de esculturas que hizo para Seve.

A pesar de mi admiración, nada me hacía sospechar que algún día tendría la oportunidad de conocerlo personalmente, y menos aún que por mi profesión llegaría a estar unido de algún modo a su recuerdo. Pasado el tiempo, a través de una de sus empresas, su sobrino Iván, entonces director de estas, me encomendó la realización de una serie de esculturas de las manos de Seve: su grip. Realicé el molde sobre las manos en su casa en Pedreña y acabé de darle el aspecto escultórico y de fundirlas en bronce en mi taller de Jimena. Coincidimos en algunas ocasiones más, antes del fatídico día de su desaparición. Me afecto mucho y sentí no poder asistir a su funeral.

¿Cómo ve la situación del Arte en nuestro país?

Bueno, esto es siempre terreno pantanoso. Antes de hablar del tema hay que diferenciar -grosso modo- si nos referimos al arte que se mueve en los grandes circuitos galerísticos y algunas ferias o al más cercano. Son dos caras de la misma moneda. Hay arte bueno y malo en ambos lados. Sorprende positivamente, ver lo que artistas incipientes o con poco recorrido, pueden crear e, inversamente, lo que algunos críticos y galeristas nos intentan colar, aunque, por supuesto, existe una escala de matices entre ambos y no es siempre correcto generalizar.

En el terreno crematístico, la crisis no ha golpeado del mismo modo a ambos lados. Como es habitual, el arte que se mueve como elemento de inversión o de culto ha sido menos afectado, en tanto que el que se adquiere como objeto de placer particular, pasa a ocupar siempre un lugar secundario en momentos así.

Pero todo lo relativo al arte y la cultura es y ha sido siempre un mundo fluctuante e incierto, sujeto a un momento histórico y social concreto, a corrientes y modas. No obstante, los museos siguen llenándose y, cada día hay mayor demanda de arte y cultura y mayor acceso a ellos, aunque, en ocasiones, nos los sirvan dosificados. Pero este es tema para una prolija tesis… ✪

s usted el alcalde de Marbella, pero ¿no sé si es tan conocido que usted también es el concejal de Turismo? ¿Cuál ha sido su trayectoria profesional en este sentido?

Mi trayectoria política está vinculada a Marbella que como todo el mundo conoce es uno de los destinos turísticos más reconocidos mundialmente. Por tanto, el turismo es nuestra principal industria y mi vinculación con este sector es absoluta. Y ahora desde mi posición como máximo responsable de Marbella y de la concejalía de Turismo tengo el privilegio de consensuar con el sector el futuro turístico de nuestra ciudad.

A Marbella se la conoce como la capital de la Costa del Sol, ¿qué encuentran en Marbella los que eligen la localidad como lugar de vacaciones?

Marbella es un pilar fundamental de la industria turística de la Costa del Sol, pero ahora vamos a impulsar dicha capitalidad no solo desde el producto, sino desde la acción, propiciando las sinergias de la propia Marbella y de nuestros municipios vecinos para competir con destinos como Cannes, Niza o Mónaco. Marbella es una ciudad que atrae a un número de turistas cada vez mayor, especialmente por su oferta de calidad y por su excelente clima. El deporte, la gastronomía, la cultura y el ocio atraen a visitantes de todas las

nacionalidades que, además, suelen mostrar una gran fidelidad hacia este destino turístico. Quien visita Marbella, repite.

Andalucía es un destino privilegiado a nivel nacional e internacional, pero ¿cuál es el peso específico de Marbella dentro del turismo en Andalucía?

El peso de Marbella dentro del turismo en Andalucía es indiscutible y más teniendo en cuenta que es la quinta ciudad más importante de la comunidad autónoma.

Precisamente para impulsar proyectos en materias como el turismo en la ciudad, como alcalde de Marbella estoy en permanente contacto con representantes de la Junta de Andalucía. De hecho, ya se está potenciando el centro Andalucía Lab con más de 40 actividades programadas para los próximos meses, entre otras actuaciones prioritarias y que vamos a convertir en una realidad potenciando aún más si cabe la marca Marbella.

En los últimos años se tiene la sensación en Marbella de que el turismo que antes venía a la ciudad en invierno y de un alto nivel adquisitivo ya no elige Marbella y hemos cambiado a un turismo que viene a Marbella en el mes de agosto colapsando y abarrotando la ciudad apenas 20 días, es la tan traída y llevada estacionalidad. ¿Qué opinión tiene sobre esto?

Precisamente, una de las preocupaciones que tenemos desde el Ayuntamiento es romper esa estacionalidad y mejorar la diversificación, ya que son las dos grandes tareas pendientes que nunca se han abordado seriamente por la administración local. ¿Cómo conseguirlo?, pues creemos que la estrategia es, definiendo el modelo turístico de Marbella, el más oportuno y el que más se adapte a su potencialidad. ¿Cuáles van a ser las principales líneas de actuación de la concejalía de la que usted es titular en el Ayuntamiento de Marbella?

Entre las principales líneas de actuación se encuentra recuperar ocho años después la presencia de Marbella en la Feria Internacional de Turismo de Madrid (Fitur) con un stand propio y una imagen renovada en una clara apuesta por la promoción turística. Esta es la primera gran feria en la que la ciudad recupera su espacio pero no será la última, ya que desde el nuevo Gobierno hemos apostado desde el primer momento por la promoción de la ciudad. Además, el stand que se recupera en Fitur recogerá la marca de Marbella junto a la de San Pedro Alcántara y Puerto Banús y posibilitará también promocionar todas las bondades de nuestros entornos más cercanos que hacen de la ciudad un destino privilegiado. A

Marbella se encuentra en un momento de cambio donde nos estamos replanteando desde un punto de vista crítico y constructivo el modelo turístico, contando para ello con el sector privado. ¿Cuál ha sido la primera medida que ha tomado usted como concejal de Turismo?, se lo pregunto porque supongo que sería la más urgente…

La primera medida, muy necesaria en la ciudad, era poder contar con una fórmula de participación pública-privada en las acciones de promoción turística, impulsada por el Ayuntamiento pero con la involucración de los colectivos y asociaciones del sector y del tejido empresarial. Así, desde el Equipo de Gobierno hemos impulsado el Foro de Innovación y Promoción Turística, que estará compuesto por un conjunto de expertos de reconocido prestigio. Nuestros objetivos como gestores del Ayuntamiento de Marbella son claros: realizar un análisis exhaustivo de la situación turística actual, consolidar la oferta que tenemos, atraer un tipo de turismo de calidad y definir el modelo que posibilite planificar el futuro de la ciudad.

Sabido es que el Ayuntamiento comenzó una ronda de conversaciones con los hoteleros de la localidad, ¿qué les han trasladado en esas conversaciones?, supongo que habrá habido de todo, dudas, sugerencias, quejas, etc…

Sí, ha habido dudas, sugerencias, un poco de todo. Con el sector hotelero también queremos contar desde el Ayuntamiento a la hora de impulsar acciones que beneficien al segmento turístico de la ciudad, ya

que contamos con numerosos hoteles y de primer orden que son una de nuestras principales señas de identidad. ¿Y con los campos de golf?

También estamos manteniendo ya contactos con los campos de golf del municipio para conocer sus principales demandas y caminar de la mano con el objetivo de favorecer a un segmento tan importante para nuestra economía. ¿Puede usted definir cuál va a ser la estrategia que seguirá su concejalía, en líneas generales?

Como comentaba anteriormente, nuestro proyecto pasa inexcusablemente por diseñar un nuevo modelo turístico y por apostar por la planificación pero no desde una posición unilateral, sino contando con el sector. Estas líneas generales las vamos a empezar a abordar en el consorcio al que ya he hecho referencia, donde primero vamos a realizar un exhaustivo análisis de la situación turística actual y, después, consolidar la oferta, atraer otro tipo de turismo y definir nuestro modelo y su planificación.

Conociendo que Marbella es una de las ciudades que más campos de golf tiene en su término ¿cómo se va a potenciar desde el consistorio este segmento tan importante para la economía de la ciudad?

Con diálogo y consenso con el sector. No podemos hacerlo de otra forma porque tenemos que acometer de forma conjunta medidas que favorezcan a los campos de

golf. Eso supone riqueza y empleo para nuestra ciudad. Este segmento es clave también para luchar contra la desestacionalización y asumimos el reto de avanzar junto al sector hacia un futuro estable. ¿Cuáles van a ser las directrices que va a tomar la promoción de Marbella a nivel internacional desde la concejalía de Turismo?

Queremos estar presentes y lo vamos a estar en las principales ferias turísticas del sector con una presencia destacada y con una apuesta muy firme en la promoción de nuestra ciudad y de sus excelencias.

Aquí también va a jugar un papel decisivo nuestro consorcio que deberá planificar todas las acciones en esta materia. ¿Puede adelantarnos algunas acciones que se vayan a llevar a cabo respecto a proyectos turísticos de futuro y a la promoción de Marbella?

Vamos a invertir en promocionar la ciudad, algo que entendemos desde el actual Gobierno que no se estaba realizando en la etapa anterior con el esfuerzo que merece un destino como el nuestro. Marbella es una ciudad internacionalmente conocida pero tiene que seguir mostrando su excelencia en todos los rincones del mundo y en las diferentes ferias nacionales e internacionales. Además, una cita clave que marcará nuestro futuro más inmediato será la próxima edición de Fitur en la que presentaremos nuestra nueva marca turística, una imagen en la que estamos trabajando para marcar un antes y un después en nuestra promoción.

So it is in this role that Golf Circus interviewed him for our “Inside Tourism” section.

You are mayor of Marbella but we are not sure if you are also as well known as the councillor for tourism. What is your professional background in this respect?

My political career is linked to Marbella which, as everyone knows, is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in the world. So tourism is our main industry and my association with this sector is absolute. Now, in my position at the helm of the town hall and as councillor for tourism, I have the privilege of being able to reach agreement with the sector on the future of tourism in our city.

Andalucía is a privileged destination at a national and international level but what is Marbella’s specific weight within the Andalucian tourism industry?

Marbella’s weight within Andalucian tourism is indisputable, and even more so taking into account the fact it is the fifth most important city in the region.

In promoting tourist initiatives in the city, as Marbella mayor I am in permanent contact with representatives of the Junta de Andalucía (regional government). In fact the Andalucía Lab centre is now being bolstered with more than 40 initiatives scheduled for the next few months, among other priorities, and we are going to convert the potential of the Marbella brand into an even greater reality.

What are going to be the main focuses of activity adopted by the council department you head in Marbella Town Hall?

One of the main ones will be restoring, after eight years, Marbella’s presence at the Fitur international tourism fair in Madrid, with our own stand and a revamped image, in what is a clear commitment to tourist promotion. This will be the first major fair where Marbella regains its space but not the only one, as our new local government has been

Yes, there have been doubts, suggestions, a bit of everything. We also want to work with the hotel sector when promoting initiatives that benefit the city’s tourist segment, as we have numerous first-class hotels that are one of our main signs of identity.

And golf courses?

We are also in contact with the municipality’s golf courses to learn what their main demands are and to more forward together with the objective of supporting a segment that is so important for our economy.

What was the first measure you took as councillor for tourism. We ask because we assume it would have been the most urgent.

The first measure, very necessary for the city, was to be able to count on a public-private participatory format for tourist promotion initiatives, prompted by the town hall but with the involvement of groups and associations in the sector and business fabric. To that end, the government team has established the Innovation and Tourist Promotion Forum, which will include a group of experts of recognised prestige. Our objectives as managers of Marbella Town Hall are clear: carry out an exhaustive study of the current tourist situation, consolidate the options we offer, attract quality tourism and define a model that enables us to plan the city’s future. Marbella is going through a period of change in which we are reconsidering the tourism model, from a critical and constructive point of view, in conjunction with the private sector.

Can you outline for us what, in general terms, will be the strategy adopted by your department?

As I observed before, our project is centred unavoidably on designing a tourism model and being committed to planning, but not in a unilateral way – rather working with the sector. We will be dealing with these issues in the consortium I referred to, first carrying out an exhaustive analysis of the current tourist situation and then consolidating our options, attracting other kinds of tourism and defining our model and the planning process.

As Marbella is one of the municipalities with the highest number of golf courses, how does the town hall aim to bolster such an important segment for the city’s economy?

With dialogue and consensus in the sector. We can’t do it any other way because we have to adopt measures jointly that support golf courses. They represent wealth and employment for our city.

This segment is also a key to battling the seasonal nature of tourism, and we are taking on the challenge to advance with the sector towards a stable future.

What will be the guidelines for the tourism department in promoting Marbella at an international level?

We want to be present, and we will be, at the industry’s main tourism fairs, with a major presence and a firm commitment to promoting our city and its excellent attractions. Our consortium will have a decisive role here, planning all the relevant initiatives. ✪

uéntenos un poco de su trayectoria profesional.

Me incorporé a La Manga Club como CEO Director General en Octubre de 2013. Soy Economista y ADE por la Universidad Carlos III y MBA por el Instituto de Empresa.

Tengo una consolidada experiencia en el sector turístico gestionando y dirigiendo Resorts y parques de ocio. Mi trayectoria profesional, por lo tanto, siempre ha estado ligada a La Manga Club y al Grupo Parques Reunidos, Grupo líder Mundial, después de Disney en gestión de Parques de Ocio, dónde estuve 15 años ocupando diversos puestos de responsabilidad como Director General de Parque Warner (2009-2013), Subdirector General y Director Económico Financiero del Oceanográfico de Valencia (2004-2009), Director General de Aquópolis, (2001-2004), Auditor, Controller y Adjunto al Director General de Explotación del Grupo (2009-2001).

Han pasado ya 2 años desde que entró a formar parte del equipo de La Manga Club como Director General. ¿Qué balance hace de su gestión?

El balance general después de estos 2 años es muy positivo, estamos trabajando en una muy buena dirección, prueba de ello son los beneficios operativos positivos debido a la buena gestión de costes e ingresos y al reposicionamiento adaptando el negocio a nuevas tendencias de mercados y productos y ofreciendo siempre al cliente servicios y experiencias únicas, bajo una gestión integral del negocio, valor que nos diferencia de otros resorts.

Otra prueba de ello, son los galardones que hemos recibido en los últimos 2 meses: el Hotel Príncipe Felipe ha sido nombrado por segundo año consecutivo “Mejor Hotel de Golf de España” en los World Golf Awards y el campo Oeste se

encuentra entre los 100 mejores campos de golf de Europa. Por otra parte, esperamos conseguir de nuevo y por quinto año consecutivo el premio que otorgan los lectores de la revista Today’s Golfer al “Mejor Resort de Golf de España” Estos premios son fruto de un trabajo constante de muchos meses y gracias a la dinámica de trabajo que estamos llevando a cabo, estoy seguro que vendrán muchos más reconocimientos.

Las nuevas incorporaciones al equipo directivo de La Manga Club ¿Suponen también nuevas estrategias de comercialización?

La comercialización es muy dinámica en este sector y está en continuo cambio adaptándonos siempre al mercado, al producto y al cliente, por lo que las estrategias de comercialización no sólo dependen de las nuevas incorporaciones sino GC#16 | 81

también de las tendencias del mercado.

La Manga Club es un resort multiproducto con una gran reputación a nivel internacional pero todavía con mucho recorrido por explotar a todos los niveles de mercado, segmentos de clientes y canales de comercialización. Para seguir manteniendo esa reputación que nos precede y continuar con la apertura de nuevos mercados, contamos con un equipo directivo totalmente formado y en el que cada uno por su profesionalidad y experiencia aportará todo lo necesario para seguir en la línea de conseguir posicionar LMC como el Resort residencial, de ocio y deportes más importante de Europa. ¿Cómo han cambiado las nuevas tecnologías la comercialización?

Las nuevas tecnologías han ayudado a multiplicar los canales de comercialización y a abrir negocios a muchos más canales, dónde la parte online y de OTAS juega un aspecto importantísimo en la venta. Pero la web y call Center son los canales más interesantes de venta ya que son las más rentables, por lo que el buen servicio, la

accesibilidad, y tener buenas estrategias de SEM y SEO para un posicionamiento correcto es fundamental en un primer término, pero luego y no menos importante el tener una web sencilla, rápida, donde se encuentre la información de forma fácil y visual, con un efectivo call to action y con un potente motor de venta para que los índices de conversión sean altos son también críticos.

Recordar que ambos, web y call center son el primer contacto que tiene el cliente con la empresa por lo que la experiencia debe empezar desde aquí. Todo lo anterior no quiere decir que las OTAS o las agencias tradicionales sean menos importantes ya que son necesarias en el modelo de distribución y venta.

Hasta la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías, uno de los factores influyentes a la hora de reservar un establecimiento, era la opinión de conocidos o amigos y esta es la única premisa que se mantuvo hasta entonces. Con la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías, estas opiniones son ya de dominio público y parte determinante a la hora de reservar un establecimiento. La

La competencia es cada vez mayor y desde La Manga Club tenemos muy presente todas estas valiosas opiniones de los clientes que pasan por nuestras instalaciones, a través de encuestas nos dan un barómetro del servicio que estamos ofreciendo a nuestros huéspedes y que nos ayudan a mejorar día a día para superar sus expectativas.

El pasado año 2012 La Manga Club cumplió la friolera de 40 años siendo el lugar de vacaciones elegido por turistas tanto nacionales como internacionales. ¿Cuál cree usted que es el secreto?

Tienes mucha razón, tiene que haber un secreto para que después de 4 décadas, el resort siga siendo uno de los mejores complejos deportivos de Europa. Son muchos los proyectos que comienzan con gran ilusión y que acaban desapareciendo después de la primera década de vida por diversas circunstancias.

El cliente que viene a La Manga Club específicamente a jugar al golf, ronda entre el 35 y el 40%. Podría parecer poco, pero se trata de 120.000 rondas, no podemos olvidar que el resort es mucho más que golf, somos deportes y ocio, contamos con una temporada de fútbol muy fuerte de casi 4 meses, gracias a los 8 campos que disponemos donde se reúnen equipos de toda Europa y también tenemos el mercado de tenis que mueve importantes torneos cada año que tienen lugar en las

28 pistas que forman el Centro de Tenis.

También los períodos de vacaciones escolares son épocas de ocio donde el golf pasa a un segundo plano.

Sabemos que el turista de golf también busca oferta complementaria, ¿Cómo es esta oferta en La Manga Club?

En cuanto a alojamiento, el resort cuenta con un Hotel 5*, con 192 habitaciones, a pie de dos de los tres campos de golf y 200 apartamentos de lujo perfectos para grupos de amigos o familias.

La oferta gastronómica también es muy variada, contamos con 15 bares y restaurantes, desde el exquisito restaurante del hotel, hasta el familiar restaurante italiano, un asiático o el restaurante de La Cala situado a orillas del mar, que hace el mejor arroz caldero que he probado nunca. En La Manga Club también hay cabida para la vida nocturna, el hotel cuenta con un Piano Bar con música en directo todas las noches, y cerca del centro de tenis, contamos con un bar típico irlandés.

Este campo fue el tercero en construirse en La Manga Club y a diferencia de los campos Norte y Sur, está situado en un enclave único ya que se localiza en un denso pinar a los pies del parque natural de Calblanque. Este es un campo que requiere lo mejor de cada jugador, y en cada golpe desde el tee, el golfista debe colocar la bola estratégicamente para tener opciones en su siguiente golpe.

En cuanto al reconocimiento que ha obtenido el campo, estamos seguros que ayudará al incremento de visitas ya que el turismo del golf tiene un público muy específico que disfruta recorriendo el mundo, jugando a su deporte favorito a la vez que descubren nuevos campos y muchos golfistas europeos deciden sus vacaciones guiados por esta influyente lista.

ell us a little about your professional background and career…

I joined La Manga Club as CEO-managing director in October 2013. I’m an economist with an ADE from the Carlos II University and an MBA from the Business Institute. I have extensive experience in the tourist sector, managing resorts and leisure parks. My professional background has always been associated with La Manga Club and the Parques Reunidos Group, the world leader after Disney in managing leisure parks. I was there for 15 years, in various positions including managing director of Parque Warner (2009-2013), assistant managing director and economic financial director of Oceanográfico in Valencia (2004-2009), managing director of Aquópolis (2001-2004), and auditor, controller and assistant managing director of operations for the group (20092001).

It has now been two years since you joined the La Manga team as managing director. What is your assessment of that period?

The general assessment after two years is very positive. We are heading in a very good direction. This is shown by positive 84 | GC#16

operative profits due to sound management of costs and revenue and a re-positioning of the business to adapt to new market and product trends, always offering clients exceptional services and experiences, with a great team, an ongoing enthusiasm for renovation and a fully integrated business management structure – which makes us stand out from other resorts.

Further evidence of this is highlighted by the awards we have received over the past two years: the Hotel Principe Felipe has been named, for a second consecutive year, “best golf hotel in Spain” in the World Golf Awards, and the West course is among the 100 best courses in Europe. In addition, for a fifth year in a row we have received the award decided

by Today’s Golf readers as the “best golf resort in Spain”.

These awards are the result of constant hard work over many months, and thanks to the work dynamic we have here I’m sure there will be many other awards in the future.

Do the new appointments to the management team at La Manga Club also represent new marketing strategies?

Marketing is very dynamic in this sector and constantly changing, adapting itself to the market, the product and the client, so marketing strategies don’t only depend on new appointments but also on market trends.

La Manga Club is a multi-product resort with a great reputation at an international level but still with a long way to go to take advantage of all the market levels, client segments and marketing channels. To maintain the reputation we already have, and to continue opening up new markets, we have a highly qualified management team in which each member – through their professionalism and experience- contributes everything required to continue along the same path and position LMC as Europe’s premier residential resort for golf and leisure.

How have new technologies changed marketing?

The new technologies have helped multiply marketing channels and opened up businesses to many more channels, with the online area and OTAs playing an extremely important role in sales. service, accessibility and having good SEM and SEO strategies to ensure a proper positioning is essential in the first place, but no less important is having a straightforward and fast website where information can be found easily and visually – with an effective call to action and powerful sales engine, to make sure conversion rates are high, also being critical elements.

Both the website and the call centre are the first contact a client has with the company, so the experience has to start there. That doesn’t mean that the OTAs and traditional agencies are any less important, however, as they are needed as part of the distribution and sales model.

Until the arrival of new technologies, one of the most influential factors when making a booking at an establishment was the opinion of acquaintances and friends, and that is the only premise that was maintained until then. With the arrival of new technologies, these opinions are now in the public domain and a determining factor when deciding on where to make a reservation. The competition is increasing all the time and at La Manga Club we pay great attention to all the valuable opinions of clients who visit our installations.

Surveys provide us with a barometer of the service we are offering our guests and this helps us improve on a daily basis to surpass their expectations.

In 2012, La Manga Club celebrated an impressive 40 years as a holiday destination chosen by both national and international tourists. What do you believe is the secret?

You’re absolutely right, there must be a secret to why, after four decades, the resort remains one of the best sports complexes in Europe. A lot of projects begin with great enthusiasm and end up disappearing after the first decade due to a variety of circumstances.

I don’t know if there is one single secret, but I do believe the products on offer, the setting, the convenient access, the climate and the distribution channels at La Manga Club play an important role. The great range of amenities and

services makes us exceptional, as there are very few complexes in Europe with our features, and all operated under a fully-integrated management system: five-star hotel, three golf courses, eight football pitches, 28 tennis courts, luxury apartments, a 2,000 square metre spa, and all surrounded by a nature park with a moderate Mediterranean climate.

All the aforementioned, together with our new market position, adapting the business to new market trends, offering exceptional experiences, with a great staff, investment and enthusiastic commitment to renovation with cutting-edge projects… these are what have led to La Manga Club becoming one of the best sports resorts in Europe.

What weight does the golf segment have within tourism at La Manga Club?

Clients who come to La Manga Club specifically to play golf represent between 35 and 40 per cent. This might not seem like much but it’s still 120,000 rounds a year. We can’t overlook the fact that the resort is much more than golf –

we are sports and leisure. We have a very strong football season that runs for nearly four months, thanks to the eight pitches here, with teams from all over Europe, and we also have the tennis market with major tournaments played every year on the 28 courts that comprise the tennis centre. In addition, the school holidays are leisure periods when golf moves to a secondary level.

Golf tourists are also looking for complementary options. What do you have for them at La Manga Club?

As far as accommodation is concerned, the resort has a five-star hotel, with 192 rooms, at the foot of the three golf courses, and 200 luxury apartments that are perfect for groups of friends or families.

The gastronomic options are also extremely varied, with 15 bars and restaurants, from the exquisite hotel restaurant to the family-orientated Italian restaurant and an Asian one, as well as the La Cala restaurant on the seashore – which makes the best “arroz caldoso” (“soupy rice”) I’ve ever tried. There is

also a great nightlife at La Manga Club: the hotel has a piano bar with live music every night, and near the tennis centre there is a typical Irish bar.

As for sport, in addition to the 28 tennis courts and eight football pitches, the resort has countless courses for levels: golf, tennis, paddle tennis and even children’s classes during the holiday periods, from dance to football.

uenos días, Santi. Si tuvieras que definir vuestro negocio en Marbella, ¿cómo lo definirías? ¿Algo más que añadir a la introducción que hemos hecho más arriba?

Podría definir nuestro negocio como una tienda de vinos muy especializada donde intentamos cada día dar un servicio sobresaliente a nuestros clientes y sus necesidades. ¿Cuándo comenzaste a relacionarte e interesarte por el mundo del vino?

Empecé a relacionarme con el negocio y el mundo del vino cuando tenía unos 11 ó 12 años, los veranos iba a trabajar a la tienda del “abuelo”. Repartía con un carrito a los bares y clientes particulares de la zona centro de Marbella… ¿Qué crees que diferencia a Vinos Casa Santi del resto?

Actualmente existe una dura competencia a todos los niveles, localmente o ya sea venta "on line". En Marbella hay varias vinotecas, sin olvidarnos del poder que tienen las grandes superficies.

Como he comentado anteriormente, intentamos estar muy especializados, ofreciendo siempre lo que el cliente necesite, adelantándonos a la demanda y por otra parte ofrecer un servicio a

prueba de bombas, pudiendo decir que vendemos servicio y producto a partes iguales. Es súper importante que nuestros clientes confíen en nosotros y solo hay una manera de conseguirlo: trabajar duro cada día.

en ninguna otra ciudad de España, llegando a superar a Madrid y Barcelona si tenemos en cuenta la diferencia en densidad de población existente. Marbella es única y tenemos una suerte increíble de tener nuestro negocio aquí.

Vinos Casa Santi se caracteriza por contar con una gran cantidad de referencias internacionales importantes. ¿Es el público de vuestra tienda buen conocedor y consumidor de estos productos internacionales?

Marbella es un referente mundial de turismo, por ello es destino de infinidad de personas de multitud de nacionalidades, que lo eligen para pasar desde una semana hasta instalar su segunda vivienda y muchas veces la primera, es por ello que el potencial de venta de vinos extranjeros es muy alto, siendo este público muy buen conocedor de este tipo de producto.

¿Cuáles son vuestros productos estrella ahora en estas fiestas navideñas? ¿Cuál es su principal atractivo, relación calidad-precio? ¿Quizás, la exclusividad?

En estas fechas el producto estrella es la burbuja, vendemos mucho champagne y cava. La relación calidad-precio atrae a un gran número de clientes que buscan productos de alta calidad a precios razonables. También cabe destacar el cliente que busca exclusividad. Series de corta tirada. De algunos vinos apenas se producen 200 ó 300 botellas para todo el mundo, alcanzando algunos vinos de la Borgoña, como el famoso Musigny de ciertos elaboradores, precios de 5 cifras.

¿Facilita la labor de venta, el hecho de estar situados en Marbella, una gran ciudad turística y sobre todo muy relacionada con la preferencia por los productos de lujo en la Costa del Sol? Este tipo de negocio, con toda la variedad de productos y el nivel que se alcanza en precios, sería casi imposible

Seguramente, serán variadas las nacionalidades de vuestros clientes pero, ¿quiénes son los principales consumidores de vuestros productos, según su procedencia?

No sabría decirte con exactitud, tene-

mos muchos clientes nórdicos, británicos, holandeses, irlandeses, alemanes, rusos, franceses, árabes, Marbella es una ciudad por donde pasa muchísima gente de todas partes del mundo. ¿Cómo ves la situación actual después de varios años difíciles donde la crisis ha hecho daño en todos los sectores?

La crisis ha golpeado con fuerza, han sido unos años muy difíciles para todos.

En 2015 hemos notado una considerable subida en ventas precedida de una mayor confianza en la evolución positiva de la situación. Queremos creer que todo seguirá mejorando. ¿Cuáles son los proyectos y planes de futuro que tiene Casa Santi a corto y largo plazo?

A corto plazo queremos remodelar un poco la tienda, dar un cambio al mobiliario y distribución. Por lo demás, seguiremos trabajando día a día para seguir contando con la confianza de nuestros clientes, sin los cuales, nada sería posible, por lo cual desde aquí agradezco enormemente a cada persona que viene a nuestra tienda a comprar o simplemente a preguntar. Nos llena de orgullo el estar presente en la vida de miles de clientes. Muchas gracias.

ood morning, Santi. Just a concept about your business in Marbella, how would you define it?

I could say our business is just a wines and liquors store really specialized where we are always trying, everyday, to give the best service to our clients according to their needs.

When did you start to get interested and involved into the world of wines?

I started to get involved into the wine business when I was just 11 or 12 years old, every summer I used to go to the “grandpa’s store”… I delivered orders with a cart in Marbella and the old town…

Which is the advantage of Vinos Casa Santi compared to other stores around?

There’s a lot of competition in every level, local competition and an online competition indeed… There are several vinotecas in Marbella, always considering super markets and their increasing power. As I said before, we try to specialize, offering what the client demands.

We do sell service and product at the same time. It’s quite important our clients trust in us and it’s just on way to get that: working hard every day.

Vinos Casa Santi is characterized by counting on a great amount of international brands. You clients do know exactly and consume these international products?

As you know, Marbella is a global reference. Several people from all over the world are coming every week to spend some time here or even living as a second place. Most of the cases, it’s even their first address… So, the number of international wines sold is really considerable, as this client knows really well this product.

So it’s easy to sell these products getting advantage of being in Marbella, a touristic city and really related to luxury products in Costa del Sol, isn’t it?

You know, this kind of business, with such a wide range of products at any level and these prices, it would be really difficult to happen in most of the cities.

We can even beat Madrid or Barcelona, considering the difference talking about population. Marbella is unique and we

are quite lucky to do business here.

Which are your best products now as Christmas is here? Is it the quality-price advantage or maybe exclusivity?

These Christmas, special product uses to be bubbles… We do sell quite a lot of Champagne and Cava… Quality-price relation brings a good amount of clients looking for high quality and good price.

We must highlight the client is also looking for exclusivity, a wine with a short series of bottles, that’s exclusivity… In some cases, some wines just produce 200 or 300 bottles for everybody, such as popular Musigny from Burgundy, in some cases with 5 digits price…

We are sure there are several nationalities visiting your store, but what’s the main nationality as a client?

I couldn’t be precise about this as we have British, Nordic, Dutch, Irish, German, Russian, French, Arabs … Marbella is such a cosmopolitan city as we were saying before…

What about the present situation after several hard years suffering from crisis?

Crisis has hit quite strong, it’s been really difficult years for everybody. In 2015 we have the perception everything is getting to better, increasing results and living more confidence and trust according to the whole situation. We do believe everything will keep on going on like this.

Finally, what about future plans at short and long terms?

Short term we would like to change some things inside the store, a new furniture and placement inside. According to long terms, we are going to keep on working hard as usual, giving the best to all our clients, which by the way, we are really thankful for their trust and loyalty with us. We are so proud to know they count on us for their needs. Thanks a lot for that. ✪

l restaurante Sollo, del chef Diego Gallegos y su esposa, directora gerente de Sollo Restaurante, Susana Almirón, comenzaron el año con una mudanza. Del minúsculo restaurante que habían abierto en el corazón de Benalmádena Pueblo, pasaron a ocupar un espacio privilegiado en el lujoso hotel de la cadena Hilton en la Urbanización La Reserva del Higuerón. DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón es la última incorporación en España de la cadena Hilton, un referente en diseño, ocio y servicios,

con una combinación sin precedentes de entretenimiento, salud, deporte, relax y gastronomía. Así, ambos han cerrado el círculo de la perfección y la excelencia y desde luego esta colaboración, tan provechosa para ambos, ha tenido su colofón en la distinción con una estrella en la edición 2016 de la mundialmente prestigiosa Guía Michelin.

un entorno único, ha permitido al chef, hacer realidad uno de sus sueños, poner en marcha un pequeño huerto ecológico donde cultivar verduras, hierbas, flores y frutos para sus platos.

Gallegos, brasileño con ascendentes peruanos, llegó a España tras cursar Bioquímicas en su país natal para terminar sus estudios de Derecho en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, pero su pasión por la cocina le llevó a abandonarlos incluso en contra del criterio de su familia. Costeó sus estudios en las Escuelas de Hostelería Jacaranda y La Cónsula gracias, a diversos premios obtenidos en concursos

gastronómicos y realizó prácticas en restaurantes regentados por chefs de la talla de Alex Atala (Brasil), Adolfo Perret (Perú) o ya en España con Aduriz, Dani García, Berasategui o Aleixandre entre otros. En Granada conoció a Susana Almirón, su mujer y colaboradora más importante, y también estableció una relación de colaboración con la empresa Caviar de Riofrío que no solo lo convirtió en uno de los cocineros del mundo con más experiencia en el uso de este producto y en el desarrollo de aplicaciones culinarias para él, sino que le llevó a desarrollar durante años un trabajo intensivo de I+D en torno a la cocina del esturión, incluyendo elaboraciones con la piel, la sangre o los huesos que derivaron en un menú degustación, el de la Matanza del Esturión (2014) que mereció la admiración del mundillo gastronómico, produciéndose a raíz de dicho menú el corto “Sollo”, el cual se sigue presentando en festivales internacionales.

he Sollo restaurant run by chef Diego Gallegos and his wife, general manager Susana Almirón, began 2015 with a move. This tiny restaurant, which had initially opened in the heart of Benalmádena, moved on to occupy a privileged area in the Hilton chain’s luxury hotel in the La Reserva del Higuerón urbanisation. DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón is the latest addition to Hilton’s Spanish portfolio, a standard-bearer in design, leisure and services, offering an unprecedented combination of entertainment, health, sport, relaxation and gastronomy. They both thus completed their circle of perfection and excellence, and this collaboration – extremely beneficial for both parties – has now been topped off with the honour of obtaining a star in the 2016 edition of the internationally renowned Michelin Guide.

In addition to providing an exceptional setting, the union between Sollo Restaurant and DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón has also enabled the chef to fulfil one of his dreams: set up a small organic garden where he

grows vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruits for his dishes.

Chef Diego Gallegos received the news in person, during the Michelin gala held in Santiago de Compostela, where he had been invited by the organisers, while the rest of the restaurant team heard the news during dinner service. Later, he said, “The Michelin star is not only a dream come true and a responsibility for any chef, but in our case it’s like a reward, a prize, because it represents recognition of a line of work that is very personal and which involves taking risks while remaining committed to our culinary philosophy.” He admitted that 2015 had been “overwhelming” as a result of the honours received, beginning with him being named “revelation chef of the year” at Madrid Fusion.

Brazilian by birth with Peruvian ancestry, Gallegos arrived in Spain after studying biochemistry in his home country, to complete a law degree at the Alcalá de Henares University, but his passion for cooking led him to abandon his studies – against the wishes of family.

He paid for his studies at the Jacaranda and La Cónsula restaurant schools thanks to several awards received in culinary competitions, and he gained practical experience at restaurants run by chefs of the calibre of Alex Atala (Brazil) and Adolfo Perret (Peru) and in Spain with Aduriz, Dani García, Berasategui and Aleixandre, among others.

He met Susana Almirón – his wife and closest collaborator – in Granada and also began a collaboration with the Caviar de Riofrío company that not only led to him becoming one of the most experienced chefs in the world using this product and its culinary applications, but also to years of intensive research and development linked to cooking with sturgeon, including creations using the skin, blood and bones.

This all culminated in a tasting menu, “Matanza del Esturión” (“Killing of the Sturgeon”) in 2014, which gained widespread admiration in the gastronomic world, and prompted the production of a short film, “Sollo”, that has been presented at international festivals. ✪

l European Tour es, para los golfistas que tienen la suerte de estar entre la élite de sus filas, un verdadero premio. La temporada pasada el Tour viajó a países tan lejanos como China, Tailandia, Australia, Dubai o Singapur. Sin embargo, para las categorías inferiores, la invitación a sentarse a la mesa del banquete del European Tour, requiere de una mezcla de habilidad, determinación y nervio junto con una dosis de suerte y, por último, el éxito en la temida Q-School.

El estrés de las primeras rondas se podía palpar. Los jugadores tenían miedo a comprometerse en un golpe, por temor a que otro error hiciera que sus sueños se derrumbaran. El miedo al fracaso flotaba en el aire como una nube venenosa, tocando a cada jugador en algún momento, hasta decidirse por los desafortunados cuyos nervios les jugaron malas pasadas.

Los jugadores cuyas manos húmedas les hicieron dar un respingo cuando se enfrentaron a un putt de dos pies o, tal vez, perdieron el control del driver y enviaron la bola fuera de del campo y con ella sus aspiraciones.

En Noviembre, los campos del PGA Catalunya parecían una feria, con 156 aspirantes que habían llegado para jugar el que debe ser el torneo más estresante del calendario del Circuito Europeo: la Qualifying School. Estos jóvenes, y no tan jóvenes, cada uno creyendo que estaban en el camino hacia el estrellato, se dan cuenta, más pronto que tarde, que la realidad del asunto es muy diferente, de los 156 aspirantes, sólo 25 obtienen la tarjeta. Los profesionales experimentados se mezclan con los reclutas para jugar seis rondas, cuyos resultados podrían determinar su inmediato futuro.

Allí se mezclaron luchando para salvar sus carreras, que ahora caían en picado y por diferentes razones, jugadores que habían experimentado el éxito en la Ryder Cup o en el Tour Europeo con otros que habían estado en la cima del golf amateur, con otros novatos en estas lides que se aproximaban nerviosos a la jungla que es la vida de profesionales del golf.

Después de seis rondas de tortura, la Qualifying School, llegó finalmente a una conclusión y se dieron los nombres de los candidatos seleccionados. Las esperanzas destrozadas de los muchos, que sólo siete días antes, estaban convencidos de que estaban en la cresta de una carrera como miembros millonarios del Tour Europeo, quedaban ahora destrozadas. Muchas caras tristes, algunos con lágrimas, miraban con ojos indiferentes a las puntuaciones que aparecían seguidas de sus nombres.

Esta es la realidad a la que se enfrentan aquellos que quieren formar parte del exclusivo club para golfistas profesionales conocido como European Tour.
