Welcome to the

50th Anniversary Gold Collection This year Bloomington Gold celebrates 50 YEARS as “The Granddaddy of Corvette Shows” by returning to where the event started - Bloomington, Illinois.

The 2022 Gold Collection will feature Corvettes inducted into The Great Hall, Bloomington Gold Certified®, SURVIVOR® and Benchmark® Corvettes, and a couple of never-seen-before Corvettes - certainly tomorrow’s special cars! The setting is also very special - The Bone Student Center on the campus of Illinois State University, a setting pursued by Guy Larsen for the Gold Collection at the 50th show; the rest of the 2022 show was formed around this idea.

The first Special Collection was presented at the Bone Center in 1984, and continued there through 1992. The Special Collection series was 25 years with the final Collection - Grand Finale - in 2009, followed by The Great Hall, 2010 through 2014, and the current Gold Collection event.

A second collection can be found in Redbird Arena. Here our 2022 Camaro collection will be housed on the concourse of the arena. The collection will feature production and performance Camaros including a B4C Police Car and a COPO Camaro!

The Special Collection 1984-2009

Once upon a time on a Sunday morning about 11 o’clock in 1983, a thought crossed my mind; how many truly interesting Corvettes do people see at a typical car show? Not many!

So the question came to mind, why not create an event that included nothing but interesting Corvettes and call it the Special Collection? By about 11:15, I had a list of theme lines that would fill enough collections to cover a ten year period assuming each collection consisted of about thirty cars. Each Collection would be assembled around a theme line such as Fuel Injection, Racers, Experimentals, etc. The idea was easy. The execution was hard but very gratifying. It was the perfect event for that time in history. It was a complimentary ‘new idea’ coupled with the other unheard-of 1984 ideas of Gold Certification, Restoration Workshops, Road Tours, Silver Salute, all to be rolled into a new event branded Bloomington Gold.

In the beginning, Jim Purvis was the best person on earth to acquire and arrange the dazzling vehicles. Rich Schuler arranged the iconic Bone Center as the world’s finest Corvette art gallery. Jean Bates created the unique elegance, demeanor, and hospitality of the experience. Carol Burroughs was behind the curtains of Bloomington Gold making all events flow together and look effortless. It was Bill Locke who kept the Special Collection healthy for another fifteen years beyond its original planned run. Twenty five Special Collections existed from 1984 through the Grand Finale in 2009.

Grand Sports, The Original StingRay, SS racer, L88s, Z06s, low milers all over the place. Firing up Grand Sport #3 in the hushed ballroom. Wild applause. Music-video presentations. Competitors like Viper, XKE, & Ferrari parked right next to Corvettes. Duntov, Shinoda, Perkins, as well as every other Corvette luminary, plus rock musicians wandered around that ballroom with the same fascination as thousands of others less famous. People went to see the Corvettes. They came back to repeatl the ‘experience’. There was something about it.

Future collections may be assembled throughout the years, however, none will ever replicate the ‘experience’ of the original Special Collections in the Bone Center. It was named Special Collection to describe the cars people would see. Turns out, ‘Special’ described the feelings people had when they left.

The Great Hall Vision

The Cars, People, & Stories of the Corvette Phenomenon Background: In 1973, the Corvette bible, Star Spangled Corvette, was written by Karl Ludvigsen. He articulately captured the evolutionary history of Corvette since 1953. However, it had been nearly forty years since that book was published until the idea of the Great Hall occurred within Bloomington Gold. During that span, a new phase of Corvette history had taken place. It was The Corvette Phenomenon that occurred after 1973.

During that time, countless books, magazine articles, and photos had been published about Corvettes. Their specifications. How they were made. What they were worth. How to buy them. How to restore them. Each article or book elaborated on single pieces of a giant jig-saw puzzle of what the Corvette Phenomenon was really all about. Esteric bolt logos. Telltale signs of ersatz window stickers. Swap meets. Arcane secrets of engine stampings. Concours. Club events. Fifteen ways to increase the testosterone of an already over-sexed ZR1. And on and on.

Purpose: However, no articles, books or events had ever assembled the entire jig-saw puzzle of the Corvette Phenomenon into one story. Writers and experts pulled out pieces of stories here and there but never really tried to fit them all together into an overarching story that went much beyond the vehicle itself. So Bloomington Gold decided that the pioneers of the phenomenon must be recognized. It would be a story and recognition not told from the GM window but from the view of grass roots Corvette enthusisasts and entrepreneurs. The story was important to tell because it was the grass roots Corvette people who influenced trends, tastes, and direction of preservation, restoration, racing, and collecting of ‘old’Corvettes. Other marques from Ferrari and beyond took notice and followed the Corvette community’s lead in multiple ways.

Mission: The mission of the Great Hall was to document and weave 50 Corvettes, 50 People, and their 100 pioneering stories into the fabric of the Corvette Phenomenon. The objective was to provide insights into what happened, how it happened, and who made it happen. The Great Hall displays, interviews, and story books between 2010-2014 played an historically significant part in documenting Corvette’s grass roots contribution to Corvette’s success and influence on automobile culture. Granted, Mitchell, Shinoda, Duntov, Piggins, and Pike created the original recipe for cool and speed. But the Great Hall was inspired by Prather, Adams, Knoch, Krughoff, Locke, Mock, Miller, Guldstrand, and many other pioneers of their equal who represented the grass roots owners, racers, swappers, reproduction manufacturers, event organizers, restorers, magazines, and collectors.

Nominations for Great Hall pioneers were open to everyone. However, a rotating jury of well informed yet disinterested jurors (not connected with the Great Hall) were responsible for the review and confirmation of all vehicles and people inducted to the Great Hall.

Next Step: It’s been nearly ten years since the last of all Great Hall displays and stories were seen. Printing a book including all stories and a live display of all 50 vehicles in one place is an interesting thought…..isn’t it?

1956 Corvette SR2 Great Hall Inductee; First GM built & sponsored racer; Built by Harley Earl for his son, Jerome Earl Owned by: Irwin Kroiz, Ambler PA Harley Earl was the head of styling for General Motors Corp. He envisioned and championed its creation in 1953. Harley’s son, Jerome, was racing a Ferrari in 1956. His father was told by the top brass of General Motors it didn’t look right that Jerome was racing a Ferrari and that he should be racing a Corvette. Harley told Jerome he had to sell the Ferrari and he would build him a special Corvette race car. This is the back drop for the first General Motors purpose-built and sponsored Corvette SR-2.

The SR-2 had a successful racing history. Its drivers were Jerome Earl, Dr. Dick Thompson, “The Flying Dentist”, John Fitch, Bud Gates and Jim Jeffords. In November 1957 the SR-2 was entered at the Nassau Bahamas race by Jerome Earl and Bill France, and driven by Curtis Turner. The SR-2 won the Memorial GT race. In 1959, the SR-2 was sold to Jim Jeffords. The car raced at Sebring driven by Jim Jeffords with Augie Pabst as back-up driver. At the end of 1959, the SR-2 was sold to Bud Gates who owned a Chevrolet dealership in Indianapolis, Indiana. Bud had success racing the car in SCCA events. Gates sold the SR-2 to Vernon Kispert from his dealership’s used car lot on July 5, 1962. Vernon did a lot of drag racing for four years. He was from Terre Haute, Indiana, and the car was named “The Terror of Terre Haute”.

1956 Corvette Sebring Racer Great Hall Inductee; GM S.O. 6911 Development Owned by: John & Sally Neas, Tulsa OK In 1956, Ed Cole, then General Manager of the Chevrolet Division, decided to save the Corvette from extinction by promoting it as a performance car. Corvette production car serial number nine was converted at Sebring under Engineering Shop Order 6911 using RPO SR (Special Racing) options with production part numbers including Halibrand wheels, 37½ gallon fuel tank, HD suspension, Lyeth Engineering Hi Tork 4:11 limited-slip differential, finned brake drums with Bendix cerametallic brake shoes, Firestone 6.70-15 170 tires, and side scoops to cool the rear brakes.

Following motor failure after two hours at Sebring, the car was campaigned by Max Goldman and became the top finishing Corvette in the C/M class at Cumberland and Elkhart Lake and set the Haven Hill Climb record. Chevrolet used it for various engineering tests including block-off plates for heat riser, four speed, and production HP shock absorbers. After the summer 1956, Bob McLean, an original designer of the Corvette, acquired it for street use. The 1956 Sebring Racer is a Richard Robinson restoration.

1957 Corvette Convertible Former owner: Chip Miller Owned by: The Mecum Family, Walworth WI This Aztec Copper 1957 Corvette is one of the best-documented first-generation examples known to exist. Its provenance is supported by extensive original documentation, including nearly every piece of dealership paperwork and full ownership documentation.

The car was sold new to Baltimore resident Paul Ragonese. In 1959, it was acquired by George Neiman of York, Pennsylvania, who maintained the car for more than 35 years. In 1996, Neiman sold the car to Chip Miller of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Miller commissioned a sympathetic restoration in the late 1990s. In December 2003, Chip Miller was diagnosed with Amyloidosis and passed away just four months later.

The Miller family decided to auction the car during Corvettes at Carlisle in 2004 to help establish a nest egg for The Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation. Miller’s close friend, Dana Mecum, purchased the car at the auction. The car was invited to Bloomington Gold’s 2005 Special Collection and was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame in 2007.

The car retains its original 283/220 HP V-8 engine, 4-speed transmission, no-hit body, glass and most of its original chrome. With four owners since new, this 1957 Corvette’s well-decorated pedigree places it among the top tier of all first-generation Corvettes.

1960 Corvette Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Racer Great Hall Inductee; Le Mans 1960: First in Class, Eighth Overall Owned by: Irwin Kroiz, Ambler PA 1960 was the first time a Corvette won its class at the famous Le Mans 24 hour race. The #3 Cunningham Corvette held this title for 40 years!

Briggs Cunningham was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was raised in wealth and privilege owning and racing many different makes of cars.

His goal was to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in an American made car with American drivers.

In 1960 Briggs Cunningham brought a team of three Cunningham Corvettes to be entered in the Le Mans race. All three cars had the same high-performance options installed, with the help of Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette’s Chief Engineer, and back door assistance from Chevrolet Motor Division. The three Corvettes were numbered 1, 2 and 3, with the #3 Corvette driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman. In spite of problems throughout the race, Bob Grossman crossed the finish line First in Class and Eighth Overall, resulting in a great accomplishment for Briggs Cunningham, Chevrolet and Corvette, not to mention the history books!

1960 Corvette Camoradi LeMans Racer One of the first Corvettes to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans Owned by: Dominic Testa, Miller Place NY & Salvatore Caliguri, Jamesport NY This 1960 Camoradi Le Mans Corvette #4 is the only straight axle Corvette to have finished both the Sebring 12 Hour and the Le Mans 24 Hour races. The Corvette also competed in the Nurburgring 1000 KM, and with Jim Jeffords driving and won the GT Class at the Havana Grand Prix. The Camoradi Corvette finished 2nd in class in the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, with Fred Gamble driving the entire race.

After completing the Le Mans 24 Hour race, Fred Gamble and Bob Wallace drove the Corvette to Sweden and with Lucky Casner driving the Camoradi #4 car, won its class at the Swedish Grand Prix. Fred Gamble went on to set a Swedish GT speed record. Sadly, after a lunch stop in southern Sweden, Bob Wallace apparently dozed off, flipped, and seriously damaged the Corvette while enroute to the Goodwood Trophy Race in England.

After many years of searching American Corvette collector Loren Lundberg was able to locate the car, still in Sweden, and bring it back to the United States for restoration.

1961 Corvette Sebring Racer 1961 Sebring 12 Hour – 2nd Place GT, Driven from Indianapolis to the track in Sebring FL Owned by: Marty & Marsha Fowler, Kennett MO Ordered by Bud Gates Chevytown in Indianapolis for the 1961 SCCA racing season and raced by Bud Gates. Built on Nov. 2, 1960 and came equipped with a 315 HP engine, 4 speed, positraction, heavy duty brakes, quick steering adapter, wide base wheels, radio delete and a convertible top. For the Sebring race Chevrolet provided the “Sebring Package” which included a quick-fill 37 gallon fuel tank, revised fuel delivery lines, rear window tunnel for the hardtop, HD front suspension and a special exhaust system. Ron Kaplan in Chicago prepared the car for the race. A hardtop was required for Sebring and Gates told his mechanic to borrow one from a new Corvettes on the lot. When the day came to leave for the race the car hauler had mechanical problems, so the car was driven from Indianapolis to Sebring.

On March 25th 1961 Bud Gates and Harry Heuer piloted the Corvette to second place in GT and 23rd overall against some of the world’s best purpose built race cars with professional drivers. Then Bud drove the car back to Indianapolis and sold on Sep 21, 1962.

After 4 owners, Larry Thomas from Clinton Indiana ran across the car noticing some of its unusual features. He remembered the Gates Corvette from its racing days. Larry bought the car and traced its history through the Indiana DMV. Every title back to the Bud Gates MSO was on file. The car had never left Indiana. It was the car! Larry kept the Corvette until 1981 when he took the car the NCRS meet in St. Louis to sell. That’s where I noticed it because of the large sign on the windshield which said “Sebring Racer”. I asked “What‘s a Sebring Racer?”

Caretakers of the Legend!

In the 1970’s, the Corvette hobby was much different than it is today. It was a time of swap meets, not catalogs or internet buying power. It was a time of new soft bumpers, catalytic converters and modest horsepower.

It was also a time when new Corvette parts were scarce and most Corvette owners spent time sifting through used parts at swap meets. It was then that Jerry Kohn, a Corvette enthusiast from Michigan, was searching out much needed parts for a 1958 Corvette. He soon found that the parts he needed were either unavailable, of poor quality or overpriced.

Luckily, being a tool and die maker by trade allowed Jerry the opportunity to build tooling and die cast his first reproduction parts, grille teeth for 19531960 Corvettes. In October of 1974, he took his first sets of reproduction grille teeth to a Corvette show in Illinois. Soon other Corvette owners were asking for grille teeth and Jerry began making sets for fellow restorers. The need for reproduction Corvette parts greatly exceeded Jerry’s expectations.

There was a demand for quality reproduction parts and Corvette Central was born. In the early years Jerry, with the help of his then teenage son Scott, sold his parts mostly at swap meets around the country. Today the team at Corvette Central consists of 80 full-time employees including Jerry’s family.

In March of 2001, we moved the administrative offices, order fulfillment and warehouse operations into a new 40,000 square foot facility. Our manufacturing facility remained in downtown Sawyer where it started.

Incorporated into the move was the implementation of a new automated order picking system, which interfaces with the computer network making it possible to pull orders and put away inventory more efficiently. The system also controls inventory levels and purchasing quantities.

To fill the need for an ever-increasing span of Corvette parts has required an ongoing commitment to research and development. Corvette Central continues to spend time and resources to develop and manufacture many of our own products, 3000 right here in Sawyer, Michigan.

In 2004, we added an additional 11,500 square feet to the warehouse and a new 25,000 square foot manufacturing facility adjoining our main building, putting the entire operation in one location for the first time in 30 years!

Corvette Central produces 6 generation specific parts catalogs and an accessory catalog which features gifts and accessories for every year Corvette. The seven catalogs total over 1,000 full color pages listing over 60,000 parts.

1963 Corvette Grand Sport “Lightweight” Great Hall Inductee; One of five original Grand Sports built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov Owned by: Revs Institute, Naples FL “What’s in that damn dinosaur? It went by me like I was stopped.” A.J. Foyt, driving their latest 500 horsepower prototype at Sebring, was not the first Ford racer to be stunned by the sheer acceleration of a Grand Sport.

Intended as a series of 125, the “Lightweight,” at a thousand pounds less than the production Sting Ray, was supposed to counter Carroll Shelby’s brand-new Cobras in GT World Championship races. But the Grand Sport program died almost the day it was born, killed by G.M.’s refusal to lift its ban on racing. When the ax fell at year-end in 1962, only five cars existed at Chevrolet’s Research Center. Two were quickly “sold” to private teams. Vindication came at the December 1963 Nassau Speed Week. For the first time the Grand Sports were allowed to compete directly with the Cobras. Now fitted with 377 cubic inch aluminum engines, the cars were entered by “owner” John Mecom. Conveniently, a group of Chevrolet engineers chose Nassau for a one-week vacation.

Driven during the week by Roger Penske, Jim Hall, Dick Thompson, John Cannon, and Augie Pabst, the Corvettes simply demolished their Cobra rivals.

1963 Corvette Z06 Fuel Injected; RH Drive; Export; Split Window Coupe Owners: Fred & Terry Michaelis, Napoleon OH GM’s official production date May 11, 1963; Dealer Code 2 in Zone 21 – Export Purchased by Fred and Terry in 2011 from the second owner in Australia with 22,723 actual miles and imported back to its country of origin, the USA. Engaged Bill Gould from Auto Ancestry, who conducted a 3 to 5 year history research.

Bloomington Gold Certified®, SURVIVOR® & Benchmark® in 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2013 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance in 2013 Concours d’Elegance of America in 2013 Chip’s Choice display at Corvettes of Carlisle in 2013 Best of Show of the First Corvette Car Club of Australia Convention in 1980 Rumored displayed at the Sydney and Melbourne Motor Shows in 1963 – 1964 Awarded the CCAS/Grenning Affirmation certificate as to legitimacy and originality of the engine.

Benchmark is, by definition, the most important distinction on the entire Corvette judging regime, one awarded to fewer than fifteen 1963 Corvettes. The Z06 is a very rare 1963 only option of which only 199 out of 21,513 1963 Corvettes were produced. This right-hand drive Export 1963 Corvette may well be one-of-one and is very unassuming unless you look in the cockpit (interior).

The owners of this extremely oddball Corvette feel equally honored, humbled, and blessed to be invited to the 50th Anniversary Bloomington Gold Collection in 2022. We thank Bill Locke, Guy Larsen and the Bloomington Gold team of employees and volunteers that help make Bloomington Gold the “Granddaddy of Corvette Shows!”

1963 Corvette Convertible, Harley Earl Styling Vehicle Great Hall Inductee; GM Styling Center S.O. 10323 Owned by: Rare Wheels Collection, Windermere FL After 33 years of styling leadership with G.M., Harley J. Earl retired to Florida. Bill Mitchell had taken over control and was designing his aquatic inspired “Stingray” Corvette. The Studio typically built show cars that would try-out new ideas and get feedback from the public before turning the ideas into production vehicles. The Styling Center was in the process of building such a car for the 1964 World’s Fair when Bill Mitchell ordered a second car to be built as a gift for Harley J. Earl.

Shop order #10323 used many special features from the World’s Fair car and added some of its own. V.I.N. #14012 was originally a Red/ Red Fuel injected roadster. New 4 wheel disc brakes with a split brake master cylinder, a cleaned up ‘64 style hood, ’65 exterior emblems and 3 bar Knock Offs were all added making the car as leading edge as possible. The engine was replaced and air conditioning added to set the stage for this one of a kind gift. The Bright Blue metallic color was one of Bill’s favorites since he loved deep sea fishing and it reminded him of the brilliant blue color of the sea. The white stripe down the center of the car would later show up on the hood of 1967 Corvette 427 cars and become known as the “Stinger Hood Stripe”. The dash of the car was inspired by aircraft with extra gages added to look more like a plane including an altimeter and an accelerometer in the display.

This car was delivered to Harley at his home in Palm Beach, Florida and he drove it on a regular basis. In 1965 Harley was invited to be the grand marshal at the Daytona 500 stock car race. He drove this car 200 miles north to the site of the Daytona race and used it in the parade laps. The trophy for the winner of the 500 mile race was named “The Harley J. Earl Trophy” in honor of Mr. Earl.

1965 Corvette Convertible 327/375 HP Fuel Injected Great Hall Inductee; 1,658 Miles Owned by: The Mecum Family, Walworth WI An unrestored survivor with 1,658 original miles, this Fuelie is the lowest-mileage 1965 Corvette known to exist. The original owner, Steven Banks of Sparrow Bush, New York, drove the car just 1,300 miles by 1967 when it was parked in storage for safe keeping. In 1976, the car was discovered by Bill Stephenson, who found it with 1,570 miles. The car was transferred into the hands of Richard Buxbaum, who created a commotion when he brokered this 1965 Corvette to collector Jim Krughoff for the astonishing price of $42,000.

This is the car that jump-started the realization that certain Corvettes were more than just used cars. From then on, the demand for pristine original high-performance Corvettes soared, prices exploded and they have kept climbing ever since.

The car was invited to the first Bloomington Gold Special Collection in 1984 and was inducted into the inaugural 1997 Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame as one of the original inductees. In 2001, it earned Bloomington Gold Survivor, Gold and Benchmark Certification. The car was part of Bloomington Gold’s Grand Finale Special Collection and returned the following year to be inducted into the Bloomington Gold Great Hall as the “First Expensive Collector Corvette.”

1965 Corvette Sport Coupe 396/425 HP Gold Certified; Raced by Peter Fonda at the Bonneville Salt Flats Owned by: Paul & Carla Sedacca, Cherry Hill NJ Our 1965 Corvette 396/425 was purchased from Corvette Mike at his Bloomington Gold sales display in June 1992, where he advertised it as the “RAREST 396 KNOWN TO MAN!” due to the many options, the low miles and its celebrity ownership status – Peter Fonda.

The restoration began in October 1992, with Paul and Sue Molava at The Restoration Shop, with great assist from Ron Goduti, and was completed in May 1993. The car has been campaigned at various events with awards including: Bloomington Gold Certification, multiple NCRS Top Flight awards, Chevy Vettefest Gold Spinner & Triple Crown, a 1995 Special Collection invitation, the NCRS Gallery Display - Corvettes at Carlisle in August 2015, the Concours d’ Elegance Best Muscle Car Award at the Simeone Museum in June 2019 and most recently the 2020 Gold Collection.

Thanks to a telephone conversation with Corvette Mike, Peter Weller [Robo Cop] and the talent agent for Mr. Weller and Peter Fonda in the spring of 1993, complete photo documentation of the restoration was sent to Mr. Fonda. This led to three hour telephone conversation with Mr. Fonda in July of 1993, where he revealed the previously unknown race history, the 2.08 rear axle ratio, as well as how he got the idea for “EASY RIDER”. In the fall of 1995, I received call from Al Grenning informing me of the previously unknown M22 transmission in the car, and the fact he had been following the car at events, especially at the Bloomington Gold Special Collection display in June, 1995.

1966 Corvette Benchmark; 11,783 Miles Owned by: Dean Mueller, Cleveland OH This 1966 Corvette convertible was sold new to Paul Gaberik of Berwyn, Ill., on 2/24/66 by Bergl Chevrolet Sales Inc., of Cicero Ill. From the factory the car was equipped with the 425 horsepower engine, HD 4-speed transmission and Positraction axle, factory with side mounted exhaust, cast aluminum knock-off wheels, removable hardtop and leather interior. Additional dealer installed items included an emergency road kit, a burglar alarm and a lighted compass. The car is completely original other than some maintenance items.

The car was purchased from the original owner by Carl and Linda Strohm in 1980. Under the Strohm’s stewardship the car been awarded virtually every award an unrestored Corvette can achieve. I thank Mr Gabernik and the Stohm family for their meticulous dedication to the car’s care over the years and am proud to be its new caretaker.

1966 Corvette Roger Penske Development L88 Racer Great Hall Inductee; Daytona 24 Hour - 1st In Class, 11th Overall; Sebring 12 Hour - 1st In Class, 9th Overall Owned by: Kevin Mackay, Valley Stream NY Zora Arkus Duntov phoned Roger Penske in October 1965 to offer a secret new racing version of the newly introduced HD 427 L88 engine and the competition race package which included J56 brakes, 36 gallon fuel tank, F41 suspension, prototype 2:73 positraction rear axle, TI ignition, M22 transmission, off road exhaust, radio and heater delete, teakwood steering wheel, telescopic column and a special prototype cowl induction hood.

Penske wanted the racer prepared for the 24 hour Endurance Race at Daytona and based on Zora Duntov’s recommendation, hired Dick Guldstrand to assemble a team for the Daytona race. Guldstrand picked up the car at the St. Louis assembly plant.

Penske’s Newtown Square Garage then prepared the car for the Daytona Race. In practice with its original engine it was one of the quickest ever recorded at Daytona. Chevrolet sent a second engine to Traco to be prepared, and just before the race, the fresh 540 h.p. motor was installed in the car. Penske assembled the experienced team of Dick Guldstrand, Ben Moore and George Wintersteen for the race. The L88 finished 1st in the GT Class and placed 11th overall in the race. The car was raced at Daytona in its original factory red paint, after which, at the request of its sponsor it was painted Sunoco blue for the next race at Sebring.

With its fresh blue paint job, the car was raced at the 12 Hours of Sebring where it finished 1st in class, and 9th overall, tying the record as the highest finish ever for a Corvette. It is nationally recognized as one of the most important Corvettes ever manufactured. This car represents one of the first L88 Corvettes and the only mid-year to win first in class consecutively at Daytona and Sebring. Corvette Repair, Inc. Valley Stream, NY, completed the restoration for Corvette’s 50th Anniversary in 2002.

1967 Corvette Sport Coupe 427/435 HP Benchmark Owned by: Richard Esham, Auburndale FL In 1963 the Corvette split window coupe was introduced and I knew then I wanted a coupe of my own some day. On 1/21/67 I ordered our ‘67 Sport Coupe at Rosenthal Chevrolet in Arlington, VA and picked it up on 3/28/67.

Our Corvette became our good weather only weekend chariot for about 7 years. In 1974 the middle carburetor started to have issues and I parked it just before my employer closed operations and I needed a job. Family life and a new job became top priority.

The following years the Corvette always stayed in a garage or in storage until 2019 when encouragement from my wife and sons to get the car running again. We took our Corvette to Kevin Mackay at Corvette Repair on Long Island to revive our sleeping beauty. After Kevin and his team worked their magic, we had our ‘67 judged at Bloomington Gold and received the Benchmark award in September 2020 in Indianapolis, IN.

1967 Corvette Sport Coupe L88 427/430 HP Great Hall Inductee; 12 miles, Original window sticker still in place Owned by: Davis Nelsen, Franklin Park IL Arriving in Seattle, Washington by train from the factory, this red L88 was driven 11 miles to Alan Green Chevrolet. Its original owner, Steve Smith trailered it to a remote warehouse, where he intended to turn it into a dragster. He started but never completed the project. The car did not leave the warehouse until 1975, when it was sold to Ed Lincoln / Lincoln Auto Salvage with 11 miles on the odometer. It had two additional owners before being purchased by Jim Krughoff and David Burroughs in 1985. Burroughs removed the white paint on the chassis, decals on the body and located a never stamped L88 engine. In 2003 the car became part of the Roger Judski collection, before being purchased by the current owner in 2012.

The window sticker has remained in place since delivery. The original paint and interior are virtually perfect. The original owner has stated that the driver’s door never fit properly and he did not care, since his concern was the engine and chassis!

This is the lowest mileage, 1967 Corvette known to exist and raised the Corvette world’s awareness of the L88. The car is currently the centerpiece of the present owner’s collection and museum. A Great Hall inductee, this is the cars fifth visit to the Bloomington Gold Special Collection.

1968 Corvette 427 L88 Band-Aid Racer Doug Bergan’s First L88 Racer, 1st Overall Mid-Ohio Owned by: Kevin Mackay, Valley Stream NY This was Doug Bergen’s first factory L88 out of two that he owned. He ordered the car at Williamson Chevrolet Company in Marietta, Ohio with intentions of racing the L88. Since he’s been in the racing area, he knew he needed the most powerful car available. He became aware of the L88 through Gib Hufstader, GM Engineer aspects of the L88.

Doug’s intentions were to have the car ready for the International Manufactures Championship at Watkins Glen, 6hrs race on the July 14th 1968.

Corvette Engineering supplied Doug with a list of needed modifications and they all got busy. The end result is that Doug’s car made 1st in class and 11th overall. They broke that Lap Record in Class, and months later, won 1st overall at Mid Ohio with Columbus Bob behind the wheel.

The L88 is well documented with complete chain of ownership as well as the factory window sticker, original FIA homologation paperwork and endless photos through its entire career. Doug Bergen and Bob Johnson were reunited with the Band-Aid racer 40 year later at the Corvette at Carlisle Racer Reunion. The L88 racer was awarded the NCRS American Heritage Award in July 2010.

The body off restoration was completed by Corvette Repair Inc., Valley Stream NY, in the Watkins Glen 6 Hour - First In Class livery.

1969 Corvette Convertible L88 427/430 HP Gold Certified; Prior Special Collection; Hall of Fame & Gold Collection Owned by: Frank Stech Jr., Pitman NJ This fully documented 1969 Corvette L88 is entirely original, with only 13.600 miles. In addition to the required L88 options, the car has a 4.11 positraction axle, M22 four speed transmission, side mounted exhaust and a tilt/telescopic steering column.

The car was originally purchased from Traders Chevrolet in Greensboro, North Carolina for its 16 year old owner who lived in nearby Burlington NC. The car was ordered in December 1968 as a birthday present by his father. He kept the car for a year and a half, accumulating 10,000 miles, but lost the use of the car in the summer of 1970 when his driver’s license was suspended. The car was traded back to the dealer for a four-door sedan. The Corvette was quickly purchased by an accountant for his wife fulfilling her dream of owning a red Corvette. They had no idea of what they had just bought! It really couldn’t be used on the street, and overheated constantly. They kept the L88 for 8 years, adding only 3,200 miles. Since 1978 the car has been owned by collectors, and has had virtually no additional mileage.

I am the car’s 6th owner, and have owned the L88 for 26 years. Because of its low mileage, the car drives and handles like a new 1969 Corvette.

Awards include Bloomington Gold Certification and an NCRS Top Flight. The L88 has been featured in Bloomington Gold Special Collection events in 1989, 1998 and 2008, inducted into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame in 2001 and featured in the 2018 and 2020 Gold Collection events.

1969 Corvette Coupe ZL1 427/430 HP Great Hall Inductee; One of two ordered with factory option ZL1 Owned by: Roger Judski, Maitland FL In 1969, Corvette offered option code ZL1 which was an aluminum block version of the L88 427 weighing 100 pounds less than the cast iron L88 engine. The ZL1 option itself was an out of this world cost of over $4,700.00 creating a total sticker price of $10,771.00, a huge price in 1969. While still factory rated at the same 430 horsepower as the L88, realistic horsepower was in the mid-500 range with performance ratings in the low 11 second range for quarter mile time at nearly 130 miles per hour.

Only two ZL1 optioned Corvettes were factory ordered. This ZL1 was ordered originally as a company car with all available options by St. Louis Corvette plant resident engineer Mr. George H. Heberling. His rationale in ordering the car was that such a production vehicle would benefit from an evaluation in actual use by one of the plant’s personnel.

A fully optioned 500 plus horsepower Corvette for a company car, how could you top that?

1971 Corvette Convertible ZR1 One of two ZR1 convertibles built Owned by: Rick Mancuso, Mettawa IL This Corvette was sold by me to Richard Messersmith in 1970 when I was working for my father and brother at Mancuso Chevrolet. I have a copy of the original order submitted to Chevrolet as ordered by Mancuso Chevrolet. Richard offered me the car back a few years later which I bought. Since I was beginning to race with John Greenwood then I wanted this car to look like his black # 48 TransAm car, a former BFG LeMans car so I painted it black, added Minilite wheels, an L88 hood and a Racemark steering wheel. My wife and I drove it for a few years and then sold it. We lost track of the car but heard about it from time to time. Then we saw it advertised years ago for lots of money. Then found the former concours judge and his wife, living in Seattle, who had it for 10+ years, and bought it back. Malcolm Connor Chevrolet restored it beautifully and Tri Power Automotive has maintained it for me. The ZR1 is a special Corvette by itself but it’s very special for me!

1971 Corvette Coupe ZR2 Great Hall Inductee; Benchmark, 8,735 Miles Owned by: Teresa Foss, Roanoke IL In 1971 the ZR2 option was introduced without any announcements and/or fanfare. The ZR2 Option required the 425-HP LS6 Engine.

Only 12 ZR2’s were made in 1971, 10 coupes and 2 convertibles. This car is the sole surviving original, unrestored convertible. With 8,735 miles, the ZR2 has garnered and impressive array of awards: Bloomington Gold Benchmark, NCRS Bowtie Preservation Excellence Award, MACAN Triple Diamond, Bloomington Gold Special Collection and one of 50 cars inducted into “The Great Hall”.

1971 Corvette Coupe LS6 Benchmark; 8,845 Miles Current Custodian: Terry McManmon, Berwyn IL This very well cared for LS6 has been featured in M.F.Dobbins Vette Vues Fact Book and Corvette Quarterly, The Gold-certified Cars of Bloomington Gold. With 8,845 miles the 1971 is like new in every way.

Most of its life the car has been cared for by Carl Strohm and Linda Dunlap. I first visited this car in the mid-1980s at which time Carl Strohm offered me the chance to drive it around the block. It was love at first drive. I asked him if he ever sold it to give me the chance to buy it. About 35 years later I got that chance.

This car has won every award there is for originality in both NCRS, Bloomington Gold and Muscle Cars and Corvette National. This example of St. Louis production has been used, as any Benchmark car should, as an example for the restoration of several other LS6s and as an example in writing the 1970-72 NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide. It is so original that it even has all five original tires and fan belts. I am honored to be the current, and fourth custodian, of this outstanding example of Zora’s Last Hurrah.

1975 Corvette Convertible The last production convertible model built until 1986 Owned by: George & Amy Linares. Hoopeston IL On 4 April 1975 Louise H. took delivery of this car and fulfilled her dream of owning a new Corvette! “Lou” ordered it in Bright Blue with a silver leather interior in honor of her favorite college team, the North Carolina Tar Heels. She purchased her Corvette from Alamance Motors, Inc., in Burlington, NC. Lou maintained and treasured the car until 2007, when Garry B. became the next caretaker. He, too, showed this vehicle the care it was accustomed to. In 2010, we became the third owners. We drive this car regularly and treasure “Lou’s car.” After several years, we learned that the production date of this car was 19 March 1975. We thought this very coincidental, as my wife and daughter were also born on March 19.

Options include an auxiliary hardtop, AC, PB, PW, PS, leather interior and a map light. Also, the Corvette is equipped with the infamous Firestone Steel Radial 500 tires, which were recalled in the 1970’s due to numerous blowouts.

1978 Corvette Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Benchmark; 1,900 Miles Owned by: David Goss, Terre Haute IN 1978 marked the first year for the Chevrolet Corvette to pace the Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet announced they were going to build only 500 Pace car replicas. Rumors of this limited production and media attention resulted in many buyers paying above list price. Chevrolet revised production numbers to 6502. This allowed one for every dealer in the U.S. and Canada and a group of track cars.

Pace Car #2487 was one of only 220 four speed cars and was equipped with the higher horsepower L82 engine. The car was sold new at Burns Chevrolet in Idaho and has under 1,900 original miles. The car has been awarded Bloomington Gold Benchmark, NCRS 5 Star Bowtie, the MCACN Triple Diamond and most recently – “Chip’s Choice – The Best of Bloomington Gold Collection”.

1987 Corvette Coupe Benchmark; “The Ultimate Gold” – Certified GOLD Twenty Times Owned by: (the late) David Hmura, Joliet IL, and Meridith Hmura, Albuquerque NM David and Meridith Hmura obtained the Ultimate Gold in Bloomington Gold history by having the same car judged on the Gold Field for 20 consecutive years!

The first time Dave and Meridith attended Bloomington Gold was in 1973, the second year of the event. They arrived in Dave’s ‘69 Corvette - the vehicle that Dave courted her in. They enjoyed their weekend and subsequently entered the ‘69 for judging, earning Gold Certification.

By the mid 80’s, they were big Corvette fans and Meridith purchased an ‘87 Corvette for Dave’s birthday. This was just weeks before Bloomington Gold, and Dave wanted to take it for judging just to see how it would go. No surprise, it earned Gold, losing only 20 points. They so enjoyed the experience, that they continued to enter the ‘87 Corvette for judging, each time being judged by a who’s who of Bloomington Gold Certification Board judges for 20 years, with a maximum point loss of 120. In the cars 20th year of judging they easily earned Benchmark, becoming the only car in Bloomington Gold history to complete that special journey.

Dave and Meridith gave their time, attention and love of the cars to share with many friends who became part of their Corvette family.

1990 Corvette Coupe ZR-1 43 miles; Complete factory documentation Owned by: Mark & Anne Donnally, Harrodsburg KY This ZR-1 was ordered new by John Gurski Sr., from Future Chevrolet in Woodbridge, NJ on April 1, 1990. John left strict instructions for the dealership not to apply the standard new car prep. The front spoiler was removed and the Corvette was loaded on a rollback for the short ride to the Gurski home. For the next 27 years, the car was driven around the block, three times per year, on perfect weather days.

A friend, Steve Bramati, contacted me to say an extremely low mile ZR-1 was for sale on eBay and, best of all, it was in my favorite color.

At the time of our purchase, in 2017, the mileage sat at 42 and today shows 43. All factory and dealership documentation has been preserved. Just like a time machine, this ZR-1 transports me back to 1990 and brings back many wonderful memories. We thank Bloomington Gold for including us in this year’s ‘Special’ 50th Anniversary Gold Collection!

1990 Callaway ZR1/LT5 Super Speedster One of two built; Cherry Smash Red Owned by: Dean Mueller, Cleveland OH This 1990 Chevrolet Corvette Callaway Super Speedster In the first and only one of two Series II Super Speedsters built by Callaway and was originally commissioned in 1992 and placed into a private collection.

The Super Speedster is based on the 1990 ZR1’s Lotus designed LT5 DOHC 32 valve V8. Callaway added twin turbochargers and air-to-air intercoolers, necessitation the redevelopment of the new engine management calibration, higher flow injectors and tube header equipment custom exhaust system. The engine is blueprinted, magnafluxed and fitted with a forged crankshaft and Cosworth pistons. The Super Speedster’s forged alloy suspension incorporates adjustable coil over Bilstein shocks. The Corvette is equipped with a Callaway specific Brembo brake system.

Featured is the full Callaway Super Speedster body with a cutdown windshield and curved custom side glass. The Super Speedster’s paint is the stunning “Cherry Smash Red” and the full leather interior is My Favorite Blue. The car presents true Callaway flare at its rarest and best.

1996 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible Benchmark; Grand Sport #275; Export to Germany Owned by: Dave Gregorino, Charlotte NC Grand Sport #275 was born in Bowling Green and then exported to Germany. The Corvette was built to European standards including different lights, glass, front and rear facias, seat belts, exhaust, mirrors, and much more. #275 was shipped to a Chevrolet dealer in Germany and remained in the dealer’s private collection until it was shipped back to the US in 2002, still on the factory MSO. I am the second owner, having purchased the Grand Sport in 2008. Of the 11 Grand Sports built for export, this is the only one to return to the United States.

Honors and awards include: The 2009 Bloomington Gold Grand Finale Special Collection, the 2016 Gold Collection, 2017 Bloomington Gold SURVIVOR, Gold Certification and Benchmark awards, NCRS 2011 Chapter and Regional Top Flight, 2015 Regional Top Flight, 2018 Regional Performance Verification, 2018 National Top Flight and the David Hill Award, and a 2019 National Cross Flags Award. Grand Sport #275 scored over 99% at every event.

2001 Corvette C5.R Racer Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kelly Collins & Andy Pilgrim – Drivers at Daytona 24 Hour Owned by: The Miller Family, Carlisle PA This is the last Corvette Dale Earnhardt ever raced. This Corvette has one of the most successful records in endurance racing. By the end of 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Earnhardt C5R had achieved two victories, seven second place finishes and racked up more than 25,000 racing miles! The most worthy race was when the late Dale Earnhardt and his son, Dale Jr, raced this car with teammates Kelly Collins and Andy Pilgrim at Daytona and finished second place in their class. It was the first and last time the father/son duo raced together. Shortly after the race Dale Sr. unfortunately passed from an accident during a Daytona 500 race.

2004 Corvette LeMans Edition Z06 Sport-Coupe 405 HP; 576 Actual Miles; Bloomington Gold Certified @ 98.6; Original Owner; First production car to use Carbon Fiber Owned by: Susan & John Malmquest, Tulsa OK This 2004 Corvette is one of only 2,025 LeMans Edition commemorative Z06 Sport-Coupes produced. The option number for this model was 1SB, and included special LeMans Blue exterior paint with silver and red striping for the hood, roof and rear deck, a carbon fiber hood and polished Z06 design wheels. The Z06 LS6 engine was 346 CID with 405 HP. The option also included FE4 suspension and heads-up display. With just under 600 original miles, this Z06 Sport-Coupe is Bloomington GOLD Certified.

2010 Corvette C6 ZR1 638 HP, 2014 Hall of Fame Owned by: Guy Larsen, Palos Park IL Fuelies, tri-powers, L88s, and Z06s are all respectable. But to feel serious horsepower, one really needed a 638 horsepower ZR1. What a thrill to have your head slammed into the headrest and adrenaline pumping like an athlete while your field of vision closes to about 8 inches!

The C6 ZR1 was the most sophisticated, fastest, and most expensive Corvette produced at its time. One wondered how long that title would remain intact and if the ZR1 might become collectible and a future reminder of the new golden age of automotive performance.

Would the C6 ZR1 rise to the heights of collect-ability and prices of some high performance C2s and C3s? Would it inspire the under 40 age demographic to want a Corvette and rekindle interest and enthusiasm among those generations?

The C6 ZR1 was once the most powerful car ever sold by GM and became a historically significant milestone creation of its time.

This ZR1 was purchased new and driven regularly. Often driven to dinner. Sometimes near the tachometer red-line. But, never driven to see the taillights of a challenger.

I purchased the car in 1989. The ad for this car was found by a friend in a small Wyoming town newspaper. I restored the car in the early 1990’s and had it judged at the US Camaro Nationals in 1995 receiving a Diamond award first time out. Since then I have taken the car to many Camaro events including the IndyY2K Camaro Classic held at Indy Motor Speedway August 2000. At least 2 other special Pace Car events at the motor speedway one of which occurred May 20-22 2016. I drove Julian Michaels in the Indy 500 Festival Parade on May 27, 2011. Muscle Car Review Magazine featured the car in the June/July 1995 Issue.

Goodguys Gazette feature car in June 2019. The car has won numerous awards over the years and continues to be a favorite car of mine.
