Guy Larsen, President
It’s almost time for the annual Bloomington Gold Corvette Event and the Gold Team is ready! If you’re a Corvette guy like me, you can’t wait for your favorite weekend of the year...the last weekend in June! Thousands of Corvettes to see, parts to hunt down, and friends, new and old, to meet up with and talk CORVETTES. That’s what it’s all about!
The Bloomington Gold Team is ready to host this year’s event in our new venue! We have new features, exciting improvements and good old familiar events as well. The Judging Field promises to be as dynamic as ever, the vendors’ wares will be bigger and better! The much loved GoldTour will be routing Corvettes through miles of countryside on Saturday night, offering the opportunity to swtichback and view the parade of non-stop Corvettes before emptying into downtown Champaign where restaurant, bar and shop owners are looking forward to serving their new Corvette customers. New this year is an all Corvette Autocross, being held at the nearby Parkland College grounds. And, Bloomington Gold will debut more C7’s than have yet been EVENTS at any other event this year with GM Engineers on hand to SEMINARS inform and answer questions.
enjoy the benefits of membership. Go online or sign up at the Gold Member tent for this year’s event. I want to thank all our sponsors for their support and contributing some key features to Bloomington Gold. Several are bringing or hosting special Corvettes to be on display for the attendees: see-through Corvettes, historic race Corvettes, and one of a kind Corvettes. Other sponsors are hosting activities to add to our weekend. The Great Hall will induct ten historic Corvettes and ten People who made significant contributions to the Corvette. Just to name a few - Reeves Calloway, the Gulf Oil Racer, Chip Miller, the Grand Sport Corvette, Zora Duntov, the ’67 L88 Daytona Racer. Where else can you see these famous Corvettes and People!! Come to the judging field to view the Certification and Survivor Corvettes on display Friday through Sunday. They will be parked on the east side of the Event Grounds. You’ll probably find a few owners willing to talk to you about their prized possessions- some magnificent cars! Looking forward to this Corvette Guy’s favorite weekend in June! See you there!

The Certification event was created to recognize cars preserved or restored to Typical Factory Production (TFP) authenticity and condition. The Survivor event was created to recognize those cars that APPEAR for the “majority” to have been preserved
as factory original. A Bloomington Gold award represents the judgment and opinion of NCCB/NCSB judges as to the appearance of authenticity and damage/ deterioration of the automobile “as is, where is” on the day it is judged.
® America’s most prestigious Corvette award. Getting BENCHMARK Certified documents the ultimate standard for unrestored vehicles. BENCHMARK Certified documents the ultimate standard for unrestored vehicles. To achieve Benchmark status, an unrestored Corvette must attain Gold Certification and excel in all four categories of Survivor during the same weekend. To date, fewer than 100 Corvettes have received the prestigious Benchmark award.
GOLD CERTIFIED®
Saturday, June 29
Gold Certified means that a Corvette has been “preserved in” or “restored to” within 95% of the way it appeared when it left the factory...no better, no worse, no different. Our standards for authenticity & condition are simple but difficult. The goal is to attain historic perfection not cosmetic perfection. Typically, that can be much more difficult to attain. Our highly-qualified judges have been known for their knowledge, courtesy and consistency for over 30 years. Gold Certification influenced the direction that organizations, collectors and our industry have followed ever since.
SUNday, June 30
®
Getting SURVIVOR® Certified documents the standard for unrestored vehicles. It means that a panel of judges have certified the car meets these requirements: • Is over 20 years old • Pass a 10-mile Road Test
• Remain over 50% unrestored or unaltered • Retain over 50% original finishes good enough to use as a reliable color guide
READ CAREFULLY Lottery Policy If a class exceeds ten (10) Certification or twenty (20) SURVIVOR Corvettes, a lottery will determine the order vehicles will be placed on the Wait List. To be eligible for lottery, your signed registration form and fee MUST be received by NOON, March 15, 2013. Registrations received after this time will be Wait Listed in the order they were received (if your class is already full).
Multi-Car Policy An owner entering multiple cars in a class going to Lottery, will be drawn at random with the other entrants. However, if one of his cars is drawn and placed in a class, any of his subsequent cars drawn for that same class will be automatically placed on the next available wait list slot (and not in the class). If the class has any cancellations or no shows, all wait list owners move up accordingly into the next available slot; either in the class or on the wait list.
Judges inspect only four components: Exterior, Interior, Underhood and Chassis. Cars must pass at least three of these four categories in order to become SURVIVOR Certified.
Awards Ceremony
Sunday, June 30
BENCHMARK, GOLD, & SURVIVOR Certificates will be presented.

“Not Everyone Can Be In The Great Hall... But Everyone Can Be On The Great Wall”
T
he Great Hall is conceived to run for five years. Each year, ten people and ten Corvettes will be inducted into the Hall. Each year, the nationally known selection committee will select the current year’s inductees. At the end of the fifth year, the conclusion of our efforts will result in something that has been missing from our sport - recognition of our Pioneers; the fifty most influential people (organizations) and the fifty most influential (or historic) Corvettes that shaped the Corvette Phenomenon as we know it today.
A
lthough Corvette began production in 1953, the Corvette Phenomenon began in 1973. That’s when things seemed to shift from the “new” car era to the collector car era. The first Corvette magazine (Vette Vues) was born. Swap meets sprang up. Vendors began offering (crude) reproduction parts. Car prices started to reverse from normal depreciation curves to appreciation curves. Corvette concours shows began attracting attention and participants. National organizations came into being (e.g. Bloomington Gold, NCRS). Normal maintenance shifted to the “fun” of full restorations; i.e. new interiors and new paint jobs. This era from 1973 through 1993 not only charted the course to where the Corvette industry is today but also influenced much of the course that other collector brands are just beginning to follow today. Therefore, we need to honor the pioneers of this period; 1973 through 2014.
We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of our Great Hall display. You may purchase a faux stone* on “The Great Wall” which will be a part of “The Great Hall” at Bloomington Gold 2013. “The Great Wall” will consist of individuals, families, businesses and clubs. If you, your family, your business or your club would like to be a part of “The Great Wall,” please complete the Order Form (downloadable at www. bloomingtongold.com).and return it by May 20, 2013. You will receive a complimentary poster-sized version of The Great Wall to be picked up at the show. To Purchase: Laurie Beyer at 309.888.2588 laurie@bloomingtongold.com *Each stone is 6” X 12” in size. $100 Per stone.

would like to acknowledge, to honor, those vendors who have supported our event over the past 40 years. CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF THE STING RAY 1963 marked the introduction of the futuristically designed Corvette – a styling icon which introduced features never before seen until the GM design staff put their genius on paper, worked it into clay and then ultimately produced what is arguably one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world. We’ve come to know the split window as a one time only element but other innovations brought forth with the release of the Sting Ray endured for years to come.

JOE REMES
This month our feature is on Joe Remes. Joe is the Field Operations Director. If you have had a car registered for certification, you most likely have met Joe. He is in charge of parking your sweet ride that was getting certified! In 1989, Joe started going to Bloomington Gold because he bought a ‘77 Corvette and was going to restore it. There was no place better to learn about the Corvette than Bloomington Gold! Needless to say, after going to many years of classes offered by Bloomington Gold and talking to other owners at the show, it really helped him bring his 77 back. Joe started working with Bloomington Gold in 2002 helping with Customer Service and Gold School. In 2005, he moved over to the Certification Field. In 2010, he was appointed to Director of Field Operations. Joe is responsible for laying out the field, escorting and parking the Corvettes. He has a great team that he is very proud of. Each year, they come together to get the job done, have some laughs, and be around the best cars ever made. Joe retired in 2012 from Sheet Metal Workers’ 265 after 38 years. He has been married to his wife, Shirley, for 43 years. They have 4 kids, 7 grandkids and 1 on the way. He lives in South Elgin, IL. He continues his love of Corvettes and owns a 1967 327/350 and a 2003 Anniversary Edition, both convertibles. You will see Joe at our new location in Champaign working to make Bloomington Gold better than ever!
