WORDS FROM GUY.... Here we are again, for the 49th consecutive Bloomington Gold Corvette Show, a Corvette Guy’s favorite weekend…. For many, it has been two years since the last time you gathered at Bloomington Gold and to help us celebrate our shared passion. We are happy to have you back! There are a lot of new events this year that you don’t want to miss, as well as some returning favorites. The Gold Collection this year celebrates one of the most powerful Corvettes, the 1971 LS6. These cars can be found on the concourse of the stadium, right inside the South entrance. Also parked on the concourse are the cars going for certification which also includes our second year of certifying Rest Mods and our first year of certifying Camaros! Our vendors are located throughout the Show including out on the South parking lot, the stadium concourse and in the exhibit hall located on the field level. Also on the field level is a new attraction: The Gold Theater! We recently found a treasure….slides and actual video footage of past Bloomington Gold events as well as early days of the Corvette! These have now been digitized and will be played as movies down in the Gold Theater. A description and schedule for the films can be found elsewhere in the program. While there are so many things about Bloomington Gold that I love, my favorite has to be the people that attend the Event each year! It is our passion for the Corvette that brings us all together this last weekend of June. It has been a rough year, but we pulled through and are able to gather together again! We hope that you enjoy Bloomington Gold this year! And if you do, be sure to spread the word to all your fellow Corvette Lovers about the Greatest Corvette Event on Earth! The 1971 Corvette LS6 - An Historical Perspective By: Matt Robertson
The 1971 Chevrolet Corvette C3 Coupe LS6 is one of the rarest cars in the world. It was only offered for a year, and during that time only 188 were made. Of those, some have been destroyed or damaged beyond repair. The rarity of the LS6 combined with its unique features has made it a coveted prize among classic car collectors. The car was originally priced at $6,717.00 ($5,496.00 base price with a $1,221 LS6 package). Today one of these vehicles in top condition can cost $200,000 or more. Design of the LS6: The LS6 was designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team. Duntov’s work on the Chevrolet Corvette line had already earned him the name “Father of the Corvette,” but he wanted to create a vehicle with more horsepower for races. The LS6 had a number of unique features, including the 425 brake horsepower big-block V8 engine with 454 cubic inches. The engine was made out of cast iron and featured aluminum heads. It made the LS6 the most powerful engine to be produced in 1971. In fact it was more powerful than any engine ever except for the L88, which was no longer in production. Specifications: In addition to this powerful engine, the LS6 also included a number of high quality parts and features. Some of the highlights include the 850 cfm Holley 4-barrel carburetor, an M22 “Rock Crusher” Muncie transmission, and the A.I.R. smog pump. The car could achieve 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Not surprisingly the engine was considered one of the worst performers as far as fuel economy goes; only managing between 9 and 14 miles per gallon. This particular statistic didn’t get much consideration in pre-embargo 1971, when fuel was only about $0.38 / gallon (about $2.90 in today’s dollars). Chevrolet also offered a ZR2 RPO package. The LS6 engine was joined with a four-speed manual transmission, transistorized ignition, a lightweight aluminum radiator, heavy-duty power brakes, and specialized shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars. While the standard LS6 was rare, the ZR2 RPO-equipped was almost non-existent: only 12 of these vehicles were produced. This version of the car was aimed at those who were serious about road racing, but unfortunately, the $1,747 price tag and lack of interest lead to very low sales. The poor sales of both the LS6 and its ZR2 package saw both phased out in 1972. The Modern LS6: In 2000, Chevrolet resurrected the LS6 name. Now a 385 horsepower engine, this modern LS6 was improved in several ways to make it superior to those found in the antique cars even though it wasn’t as powerful. It was further refined in 2002 (405 hp rather than 385) and used in the Z06 Corvettes produced up until 2004. A Rare Find: Those who love collecting classic cars, especially Chevrolets or Corvettes, may find the 1971 Corvette LS6 to be The Holy Grail, a car that could be the centerpiece of their collection. While you may occasionally see one of these old cars up for auction, don’t expect to find them for cheap. Even those that are damaged or in need of repair can command fairly large prices simply because of the model’s rarity. The LS6 Corvette - 188 built and all are very special automobiles! 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 Red Alert 454/450 We are starting off the Gold Collection this year with a non-Corvette. The Red Alert is a true drag race legend in every sense. It highlights the introduction of the LS6 engine in 1970 in the Chevelle which then transitioned to the LS6 Motor in the Corvette in 1971.
1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 11499 Owned by: Rick Hendrick, Charlotte NC This 1971 Corvette COPO convertible features the optional LS6 454 CID 425 hp engine (Option cost: $1,221.00; one of 188 built with aluminum heads), a turbo-hydramatic transmission (one of seven automatics with the LS6 option and one of twenty four convertibles), an exterior color of Nevada Silver with red interior, auxiliary hardtop, power steering, power brakes, power windows, AM/FM radio, tilt-telescopic steering column, 3.36 posi-traction, and custom shoulder belts. Unique to the Corvette are export procedure #1, export nontaxable status, and GM continental Antwerpen homologation with a special chassis/body/trim tag along with yellow epoxy two-component chassis sub-assemblies. Documentation includes the original tank sticker, build sheet, emission control decal, 1971 LS6 Corvette survey, Franklin Mint agreement, AMF-676 Sweden license plates, and owner history back to 1973. The Corvette’s production date was March 8th, 1971, with delivery for export to Europe (dealer code 2 in zone 79) per the official NCRS/GM shipping data records. The car is thought to have been ordered & owned by King Leopold III of Belgium, and is one of the featured C3’s of Mr. Hendrick’s Heritage Center. The LS6 is a Bloomington Gold SURVIVOR® and was selected for a Franklin Mint model.

1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 12677 Current Custodian: Terry McManmon, Berwyn IL This well cared for LS6 has been featured in M.F.Dobbins Vette Vues Fact Book and Corvette Quarterly, and The Gold-certified Cars of Bloomington Gold. With 8,844 miles the 1971 is like new in every way. Most of its life the car has been cared for by Carl Strohm and Linda Dunlap. This car has won every award there is for originality in both NCRS and Bloomington Gold. This example of St. Louis production has been used, as any Benchmark car should, as an example for the restoration of several other LS6’s and as an example in writing the 197072 NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide. I am honored to be the current and fourth custodian of this outstanding example of Zora’s Last Hurrah!
1971 Corvette LS6 Coupe # 12160 Owned by: Greg Horton, Warrenton MO I followed this car for over 10 years when I first saw it for sale by then owner Dr. Joe Linzalone. I waited too long and it was gone later turning up at Legendary Motors in Canada. I lost it again when it went to a private collection in Canada. I rediscovered the car some years later when it went back to Legendary Motors where I continued to monitor it. During that time it was used in Legendary’s weekly cable show in the episode called “Trading up to a Cobra” the owner brought the LS6 in to work a trade on an original Cobra. In 2018 I saw Guy Mabee’s LS6 red convertible and that sealed the deal; I decided it was time to get serious about that LS6. In early 2019 I traded two very nice original cars for the Mulsanne Blue LS6, a 66 Black/red L36 coupe and a 68 Red/black L71 coupe. Hated to see those two cars go and still reminisce at their pictures today, but I made the right choice “Trading up to an LS6”.

1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 12136 Owned by: Vito Cimilluca, Colonia NJ The original owner had placed the order for the “Red Baron” (that was the name that John B Young II had given the special 1971 LS6 Corvette). John walked into Palmer Chevrolet in Ocean City NJ on July 2, 1970 and placed an order for this heavily optioned Corvette. The order sheet stated, 1970 Model, the order sheet literally has every line filled with options. The dealer, not knowing this car would ever be built, made a note in the section “Delivered on or About”, states “As Possible” it turned out that John Young II had to wait almost a year for this special car, nine months later the car was scheduled to be built. John took delivery of the “Red Baron” on March 24,1971. The cost for this heavily optioned 1971 Corvette $8065.60. John owned The Red Baron for 13 years before passing it along. I have known the 1971 LS6 the “Red Baron” for almost 25 years, the car was owned by Rich Bernat, a former colleague of mine who I’ve known for almost 40 years. Back in 2014 Rich had approach me and inquired about my interest in the car, I was very interested but the timing wasn’t right having two young children in Catholic school, a mortgage, bills...LIFE. Recently Rich approached me again about my interest in the car. By this time I was financially prepared to purchase the LS6 and at the beginning of 2021 took ownership and have been working to preserve this beautiful car as she is showing her age after 50 years. I look forward to being part of the “Red Baron’s” history.
1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 12703 Owned by: Mike Ernst, Waterford WI On January 21, 1971, 17-year-old Larry W., accompanied by his parents, ordered this LS6 from Thorp Chevrolet, Annapolis, MD. After receive it in early April, he soon thereafter had it custom painted, added side pipes and mag wheels, and in the first 7 years drove it 55,631 miles. In 1978 he sold to the second owner, who, after driving it several thousand miles, put it in dry enclosed storage for the next 26 years, intending to restore it. He sold it to a friend, who for the next 14 years intended to restore it, and who, in March 2017, sold it to the present owner. All the original parts remained with the car the entire time other than the differential and the Air Injection Reactor (smog) system. Featured in the NCRS Corvette Restorer magazine, it now has 59 thousand miles on it, and is driven on back country roads on cloudless days.

1971 Corvette LS6 ZR2 Convertible # 14630 Owned by: Ed & Theresa Foss, Roanoke IN In 1971 the ZR2 option was introduced without any announcements and/or fanfare. The ZR2 Option required the 425-HP LS6 Engine. Only 12-ZR2’s were made in 1971, 10 coupes and 2 convertibles. This car is the sole surviving original, unrestored convertible. With 8,735 miles, it has garnered an impressive array of awards including: Bloomington Gold Benchmark®; NCRS Bowtie Preservation Excellence Award; MACAN Triple Diamond; Bloomington Gold Special Collection and “The Great Hall” induction.
1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 13525 Owned by: Guy & Helen Mabee, Gordon TX Dianne worked at Harvey Lane Chevrolet in Pascagoula, MS. They were unloading a red 1971 Corvette convertible in front of the dealership when Dianne and a couple of other employees walked outside to look at the cars being unloaded. One of the service representatives was inspecting the red Corvette and Dianne said ‘that is a beautiful car, and he said do you want to go for a ride?’ They went for a short ride, then the car was serviced and placed on the show room floor. The car remained on the show room floor for nine months until sold to a young man. The young man returned the car two weeks later with approximately six hundred miles. Dianne saw the car being traded in and told the used car manager that she wanted to buy the car. So a few days later we were proud owners of a 1971 Corvette LS6. Ron Wilson, the first real owner 1972-2014. We bought the car from Mr. and Mrs Wilson in 2014. After removing the folding top from the car, Mr Wilson installed a hard top which remained on the car for 42 years, hence the stain in the paint.

1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 12914 Owned by: Dean & Sue Nelson, Wood Dale IL This 1971 LS6 was ordered in Fox Lake IL and was delivered on 4-2-71. It was ordered to be a “street racer” as he wanted to buy the fastest car Chevrolet was going to build that year. It was ordered with only the bare optional equipment it would take to get the job done. Power Brakes, AM/FM radio, 425 HP Turbo Jet 454 V8, M-22 4-Speed, 411 Axle. Cost of the car was $7293.10 and he traded in his 1969 Corvette and received $4353.10 for his trade. He made $158.39 payments for 18 mos. The Corvette was in Fox Lake for two years and he traded it to a Jag dealer as he now wanted an XKE. After the original owner traded the car it has had ten owners, I am the eleven owner. I have all the state titles copies from Illinois and it has never left northern Illinois. As you see it now the only major work has been the repaint, we did in 1994 as someone had put clear metal flake over the paint (must have been in the 70’s). For all of you who ask “how fast is it?” we did run it one time at the drag strip on 8-16-94 we used a set of Goodyear rear street tires, and ran a 12.845 at 106.245 MPH.The LS6 was the last year of the high HP motors until GM made the 1990 ZR-1.
1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 13115 Owned by: Ed Vickers, Cincinnati OH My LS6 was originally ordered and delivered early April, 1971 in Cincinnati Ohio, and is a Sunflower yellow convertible with black interior and top, with four speed transmission. The car was ordered in early January, so the wait for delivery seemed extremely long. This LS6 is a two owner car, both I and the original owner were engineers here in Cincinnati. The car has 46,000 miles on the odometer. The original owner indicated that when he had the car serviced at the local Chevrolet dealer, the passenger floor mat would be folded back under the seat, after the technician completed his post service test drive! We all love fast cars.

1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 16642 Owned by: Chuck Ungurean, Marysville OH This Sunflower Yellow Corvette LS6 Convertible is a fabulous unrestored example with just 33,149 original miles. With a Saddle interior, white soft top and black vinyl-covered auxiliary hardtop. Produced May 10, 1971 and delivered to a dealer in New Hampshire. Retaining the original matching-numbers LS6 454/425 HP engine mated to an M22 4-speed transmission. The prior owner kept the car for 31 years, and excellent documentation included the tank sticker ownership history with previous titles dating back to 1973, and a CCAS engine affirmation letter. Already rare as one of 188 LS6 Corvettes produced for 1971, this unrestored survivor is immensely collectible as one of only an estimated 50 convertibles.
1971 Corvette LS6 ZR2 Convertible # 14708 Owned by: Richard Ferrando, Gillespie IL This ZR-2 Corvette Roadster was purchased from the original owner in 2000. He wanted a black car but GM did not build black Corvettes from 1970 to 1977. Therefore, the car was ordered in prime with the intention of painting it black post delivery. The car was restored by D & A Corvette, Inc. to its’ original, shipped condition in prime. Motor, transmission, clutch and all components are original. Copies of the original documents can be found on the display board.

1971 Corvette LS6 Coupe # 13608 Owned by: Kris & Susan Smith, Burnettsville IN My memories of the car start around 1974 or 75 and this cool red 1971 Corvette with a 454 and Baldwin Motion look car shows up in the school parking. No one knew back then it was an LS6 and even when Harry and I raced late one night (about 1976) in our hometown, my 69 Corvette with a new LT1 replacement motor and his 454, I had no idea what I was up against. The car just disappeared around 1978 but the story was it was stuck in the barn at Harry’s parent’s farm. I was never convinced it was still around until about 2005. Five years of negotiation and it was ours.
1971 Corvette LS6 Convertible # 13128 Owned by: James J. Wallace, West Bloomfield MI This 1971 LS6 Corvette convertible was originally ordered by a military service man stationed in Europe, it is one of three known “Export” LS6 Corvettes built, it has it’s born with original factory installed engine, after a year in Europe the car was shipped to Rome, New York where it was street raced until the early eighties, then a doctor purchased it and during his ownership he commissioned Dick Ferrando of D & A Corvette Inc. to body off restore the car. The Doctor owned the car for 38 years and only put a total of only 500 miles on it in all that time. It has been stored and not driven in his garage since 1998. I am the NCRS LS6 “Survey Guy” and have been for the past 20 years, and have been aware of this car for the past 15 years, and was able to purchase it last year. I have since gone thru all the various vehicle systems and made it show ready. The complete story of the car history and how I was able to find the car and purchase it will be the subject of a future magazine article.

Owner: Mitch Stamos - Orefield, Pennsylvania. Born August 25, 1969 in Norwood, OH and delivered to Barton Chevrolet in Newburgh, NY, this 1969 Camaro Z28 lived its life as a drag car in the Buffalo, NY area racing at such acclaimed dragstrips as Niagara Dragstrip, Empire Dragway, Lancaster National Speedway and Cayuga International Dragway in Canada. Only accumulated 2,136 miles before undergoing an extensive 5-year restoration to this beautiful original driveline Z28 restoring most of its original parts and acquiring NOS parts as needed. A 2-owner car for the last 43 years the immediate previous owner undertook the restoration, with the help of local Buffalo area restorers, and then taking the car thru multiple American Camaro Association National Judging events until finally achieving the Legend Concourse Certification Platinum Award in 2017 with a score of 98%. This car is one of only 5 1969 Z28 Camaros to have ever achieved the highest Platinum Award at the Camaro Nationals. Now resides in a private collection and being used as a “benchmark” for another restoration on a similar 1969 Z28.

1969 Z28 Pilot
Owner: Larry Christensen - Arvada, Colorado. Mileage: 50377 Hugger Orange/White Interior with Black Stripes This VIN 003, is the earliest 1969 Camaro known to exist. It is believed to be the first 1969 Z28 in that it was the most photographed Z found in the GM archives at the GM Heritage Center. During the restoration, the owner and Nationally certified Camaro judge, Larry Christensen, discovered more than 77 items that deviate from a production line Z28. The full history of the car remains shrouded in mystery, but Larry believes it was used as an engineering test mule as a demo car for the media and more. It appeared in early magazine articles and advertisements and has been pictured in factory photos at the GM Proving Grounds, as well as at the drag strip where it was tested by Car Craft Magazine.
1969 Camaro Z28
Owner: Dale Murphy - Midlothian, Virginia. Dale Murphy purchased this 1969 Camaro Z28 in 2005 and spent seven years restoring it to its original condition. Since, the car has won many Best in Show awards and achieved the Top Flight Legend Award at the 2012 Camaro Nationals in Frederick, MD, Score: 97.7% (4884/5000 points). The car also won the Concours Gold Award, Score: 98.6% at the 2013 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, Chicago, and 1st Place Muscle Car at the 2015 York Nostalgia Nationals, PA. In wanting to learn more about the car’s history, Dale did some research. He first discovered that the car was shipped to Elberton, Georgia. He then placed an ad in the local paper, the Elberton Star, in July 2011 with a picture of the car and “Did you own me?” He received calls that led him to the original owner Deborah Thornton who still lived in town. In speaking with her, he learned that she ordered her new car from a book of new cars for 1969, and picked the color Cortez silver with black stripes, black interior, bucket seats, and 4-speed. It was shipped on February 18, 1969, to McLanahan Chevrolet in her hometown Elberton, Georgia. Dale still keeps in touch with Deborah who says she loved “driving a beautiful, fast car back in the day.”

1997 Camaro SS SLP Edition
Owner: Dr. Pete Gimenez - Omaha, Nebraska. Mileage : 29,880 It’s been enjoyable owning this 1997 SLP Camaro SS since new. It was delivered to me on May 16, 1997 by Blake Dillon of Sid Dillon Chevrolet in Blair, Nebraska. Blake special ordered this car and another one in red for his dealership. I drove this Camaro almost daily for the first two years of ownership. Since then, it’s only been driven on nice days. It’s always been garaged, properly maintained and cared for. Optioned with LT1, 6-speed manual transmission, power steering, brakes, windows, and seats, tilt steering, AM/FM/CD Stereo, leather interior, air conditioning, and glass T-tops. SLP options include SLP cold air induction hood, SLP rear spoiler, Performance Exhaust System, 17 X 9 ZR1 style aluminum wheels, Hurst short throw shifter, SLP car cover, Camaro SS floor mats (still in original plastic), SLP Key Fobs (2). I purchased an extended warranty from GM and was presented with a GM Protection Plan Booklet which contained my name, address, the VIN of this Camaro, and detailed information about the extended warranty. My Camaro SS currently has just over 29,880 miles. I’ve retained all of the dealership documents, owner’s manuals (both GM and SLP), and all service records since new.
1969 L-78 Coupe
Owner: Benny Pfieffer I bought this car from the original owner, two years ago. He had ordered the car and was a drag racer, so he knew what to order. It currently has 28,000 miles on it. It still has the original factory installed brake shoes on the rear! It also has all matching numbers on the drive train.. Since the original owner is still alive, I also have the POP and other documents on the car!

1967 Yenko Camaro
Owner: Doug Perry - Columbus, Ohio. Mileage: 7257 This car was stored in a heated garage since 1973 with its original owner John Weaver. With a mere 7,257 original miles this car retains its original Yenko conversion drivetrain, sheet metal, glass, interior, and full Yenko Chevrolet documentation. The original sales price of $5,242.08 makes this car the highest optioned and priced first generation Yenko Camaro and documented as being the last 1967 (YS760) Yenko 427 conversion Camaro selling March 4, 1968. Recently a 1/64 scale replica model of this car was completed and presented by Johnny Lightning available in a limited production of 2,000 units. The award-winning restoration was completed and documented by Arone Restoration in Homer City, Pennsylvania, with motor work performed by Dave McGaffee of Bowtie Performance. Thank you, John L. CERTIFICATION What it’s all about and why it’s important to the sport! Throughout the concourse of the stadium you find yourself at the start of the Certification Field. This is where you will find 70 Corvettes, 3 Camaros and 2 Resto Mods that are spotless, perfectly kept and precisely parked all there for one thing: To be Certified by Bloomington Gold. But what exactly does this mean? To be precise - The Corvettes and Camaros are all being judged on how close they appear to how they originally left the factory. Ok, but how does a restored car fit in? Good question! This means the restorer used original parts, even paint finishes when restoring the car. However, when you read the overview of Survivor® below, you will note that a restored car only qualifies for Gold Certified®. When it comes to Resto Mods, which are older cars that have been restored using, modern components such a drive train, suspension and even interior modern day interior conveniences, the resto mod Corvette scores the highest when it has the most significant modifications from when it was originally built. Even if you are not a collector yourself, the value that certification brings to a car is good to the entire industry as it positively effects the overall value of the Corvette market. Each of the cars on the judging field is striving for anywhere between 1 and 4 different awards; Gold Certified®, Survivor®, the much coveted Benchmark® and for the second year Resto Mod Certification. They are competing against set standards and not each other. Here is a brief overview of each of these standards, as set by Bloomington Gold. Gold Certified® - A Gold Certified® Corvette or Camaro appears as it would just after completion of “typical factory production.” It means that a car has been preserved or restored within 95% of the way it appeared when it left the factory – no better, no worse, no different. Bloomington Gold’s standards for authenticity and condition are clear – the goal is to attain historic perfection, not cosmetic perfection. A Gold Certified® Corvette or Camaro can be restored, but it must be restored to the way it left the factory. This is where the art of restoration comes into play. Survivor® -The Survivor® Award is designed to recognize those Corvettes that are “worn in, but not worn out.” A Survivor® Corvette is significantly unrestored, unrepaired, or unmodified and meets these requirements: • Is over 20 years old • Can pass a road test over 10 miles • Retains OEM engine • Remains unrestored, un-refinished, or unaltered A Survivor® Corvette award recognizes Corvettes that are highly unrestored. Most of the parts and paint must be original to that car. That is why some Survivor® cars are not as pretty as you would expect them to be as the paint has aged over time…This is ok ! Benchmark® Certification - This is the ultimate standard for unrestored vehicles. To achieve Benchmark® status, an unrestored Corvette must attain Gold Certified® and excel in all four categories of Survivor® during the same weekend. To date, fewer than 5% of the Corvettes that have been Gold Certified® have received the prestigious Benchmark® Award. This year, there are 14 Corvettes on the judging field going for Benchmark®! Resto Mod “recognizes the seamless integration of today’s possibilities into yesterday’s performers by applying today’s capabilities and styling enhancements that result in improved styling, handling, performance, and comfort to modern standards while retaining a classic original design”.
