Our Mission

At GoldFoil magazine we work with new and emerging talent within the fashion industry to bring you incredible content, interesting interviews, different points of view, and much more. We believe that we are able to do better, to expand our horizons, to learn and experience more.

Editor notes

It’s that special time of the year, my favourite time - we get to hang up the stockings filled with sweets, make a cup of hot chocolate, bake mince pies and wrap presents for our dearest. As Christmas approaches, the stress of gift buying and preparation lifts and we remember the Christmases passed and they bring us to our childhood, perhaps that could be the reason it is my favourite time of year too? This month on the cover we have our Editor’s favourite Christmas card designed by Martine Spencer, her use of colour and texture beautifully capture the spirit of Christmas and the fragility of fashion. With attention to detail and a modern twist to the Christmas red dress you’d see on magazine covers in the 60s her artwork represents what GoldFoil magazine is - constantly evolving, starting new conversations and inviting everyone to join in. At the end of November we presented our Christmas Card competition in collaboration with Drawing Cabaret Couture as an end of the year revisit of some of the most iconic and memorable looks that the team got to work with, and it is also a celebration of the artists that made illustrations of them. Over 250 people casted their votes on our website and the winner of the competition was Melanie Termtanasak, you will find her Christmas card with this magazine, and we hope you love it as much as we do. The runner-up was of the beautiful card designed by Jean Warner (artwork on the right), and Martine Spencer snatched the Editor’s choice. I had the opportunity to interview Isher Dhiman - named artist of the month; an incredibly talented and genuine artist who creates delicate artworks in watercolours and plays with the gentle fluidity of the medium which oftentimes creates for an interesting and unexpected result. For those of you looking for ideas of what to buy him for the holidays, we have an idea - a candle from Candles for Chaps. They are beautifully crafted and hand-poured into paint tins. Their two fragrances are inspired by power and cars, and are here to bring a smile on the faces of the men in your life. Merry Christmas Deyvid Dimitrov Editor-in-chief GoldFoil Magazine

Grand Tourer: Light this candle, close your eyes and let your nose do its work. You’re no longer sitting at your desk in your pointless job, you’re in the leather bucket seats of a Series 1 Jaguar E-type on the grid at Goodwood. Smell the oil, feel the heat from the engine inches in front of you. Your colleagues’ annoying chat transforms into noise of the pit crew running through pre-race checks. Grip that mouse as it morphs into a gear lever. The hum of your PC’s fan becomes the baritone wail of a British inline six as you stamp your foot to the floor and rocket forward. Johnny Foreigner doesn’t stand a chance. Candles for Chaps present the Grand Tourer. Grand Tourer transforms your surroundings into classic motoring style with a base of Soy, Coconut and Beeswax, melded with aged leather, a hint of labdanum and a smattering of birch tar for a smoky finish. Retail price: £24.99

You can practically hear the internal groan as the men in the room open candles for Christmas. But wait - there’s a twist - they’re candles they actually want? Yes, that’s Candles for Chaps, with ‘Good old fashioned manly candles’... hand-poured into paint tins… because they’re for men. In the Winter of 2021, Candles for Chaps set out to change people’s minds, and put a smile on their faces by making candles specifically for men, who don’t want them. And yes, they know it’s stupid - but sometimes that’s what being a man is all about. Their’ 2 ‘hero’ fragrances are inspired by the dream: power and cars. Ed and Charlie have truly created the Scent of Power and eau de Grand Tourer. THE FOUNDERS Founded by bizarre co-foundering duo former lawyer Charlie Hagan and former Stockbroker Ed Jonkler, CFC is surely destined for success. Their 2 fragrances: Scent of Power (Elements of aged Oak and Sandalwood with a dash of Tobacco) and Grand Tourer (aged Leather with a hint of Labdanum, paired with Birch Tar for a smoky finish) are flying off the shelf at a rate of knots, just in time for Christmas.

Drawing Cabaret Couture

Drawing Cabaret Couture Drawing Cabaret Couture was created by model and professional dancer Janet Mayer and artist & set designer Matthew Lawrence. Together they collaborate with some of the finest and up and coming designers and fashion creatives to bring their fabulous live drawing classes to your living room. Their concept has proven very successful especially during the pandemic and that is when it grew in popularity, as more and more creatives needed a sense of normality and a new inspiration. Recently they reopened their studio allowing a selected number of illustrators to attend an in-person live drawing session.

cial immersive event as Drawing Cabaret Couture, you will have the opportunity to meet many other creatives, as well as learn of designers and artists you might not have come across before, you will see your artistic skills improve and you will gain more clarity, and feel more relaxed and confident. After each class Matthew and Janet do an editorial photoshoot which is shared with their Patreon supporters, and we have the incredible honour to show some of their images, and the artworks some of the artists create on a monthly basis.

ISHER

DHIMAN Artist of the month interview @isherdhiman

She is an award-winning mixed media artist who creates sophisticated and evocative artworks, using her degree in economics and skills in research allow her to analyse and simplify her work to perfection. Isher allows watercolours to flow through the page yet she is able to control it which brings her art to life full of rich and vibrant colours and textures.

38

Hi Isher, Thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview today! How are you?

ther studies in Fashion Illustration and Fashion Design at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins in London and from then on I always Hi Deyvid, thank you for inviting me for this immersed myself in drawing every day and enrollinterview. I am very well thank you. ing onto different courses to continually evolve as an artist. Until very recently, I lived a dual life, economist by day and artist by night, selling work through various exhibitions and building up a list To get started, can you tell me a little bit of private clients. But now I am very happy to say about your background and how you got that I am an Artist full time, working on private into art? commissions, collaborations and leading Fashion Art workshops via my online teaching platform ID Bit of a cliché, but honestly I have been drawing Art School. since I was a little girl. Being an only child, I found solace in drawing. Studying art at school, imposter syndrome kicked in and I decided I was not good enough for Art college and went on to complete a degree in Economics, as you do. But my passion never died, I continued to draw and paint all the time. A few years later I went on to complete fur-

What is your favourite medium to work with? I do love to work with a variety of media, and I always have a plethora of mixed media within arm’s reach to be able to instinctively respond depending on my mood. Mostly, I find myself working predominantly with watercolour and inks, as I love the freedom and movement of watercolour teamed with the anticipation and unpredictability of the end result. It is so thrilling! Can you walk me through your creative process as I am curious to know how you develop those elaborate conceptual pieces of work? My conceptual pieces are often a labour of love, though minimalistic in the final outcome, the process and behind the scenes can often be days/weeks of research. I have passionate interests in poetry, nature, moon sightings to name a few things and these often feed into my self initiated work. With my fashion work, I still like to play with the conceptual idea and often reduce things down to their

essential form, personally for me, less is always more. Do you have a favourite artist, who is it, what draws you to their work? I think it’s very difficult to pinpoint just one person. Throughout my life I have been inspired and influenced by so many people, not just artists and I truly believe inspiration is everywhere.

41

42

What inspires you and do you have a muse?

I truly believe inspiration is everywhere. From taking a walk in nature, seeing how the sunlight heightens the beautiful colours of nature, especially now in Autumn/Winter. Going to a gallery or exhibit. Being born/living in London, I feel privileged to be able to call this wonderful city home; it is always a big inspiration for me. I don’t have a personal muse but I am very thankful to the many amazingly talented models, dancers and creative individuals whom I have met over the past couple of years. Despite the challenging unprecedented times, they have found the motivation and energy to keep going, which kept us artists going creatively too.

You have an amazing list of previous clients you have worked with, what is a piece of advice you would give to an aspiring artist? Thank you. For me, being able to draw and understanding the fundamentals is key, whether it be the human face or the human form. It was always very important for me to be able to learn everything by the book, to be able to draw with precision so that in time I can afford to use my artistic licence to break the rules a little. My advice would be, not to look for shortcuts, you have to put in the hours to hone your skills. Don’t be afraid to try something new, always be open to experimenting and evolving and know that it is a creative journey which has no end, but ultimately just enjoy the ride. If you are truly passionate and driven, then your aspirations will be fulfilled.

Christmas card competition in collaboration with Drawing Cabaret Couture In November we set up a competition with Drawing Cabaret Couture where we challenged their Diamond Tier Patreon supporters to design a Christmas card. We received an overwhelming amount of beautifully designed cards, and thank god it was an open vote competition as we would have had a hell of a time choosing our favourites. Over 250 people casted their votes on the system and Melanie Termtanasak received the most votes, followed by Jean Warner. On the next few pages you will discover the most beautiful and expressive Christmas cards that we received for this competition. Thanks to everyone who participated and we are hoping to do bigger competitions in the new year, so keep your eyes opened!
