Get some cheer from Scouts this year BY EDWINA WILLIAMS FIRST Mount Clear Scouts could be part of your family’s Christmas story this December. The group is running their first Christmas tree hall fundraiser and chair Selena Prior said she hopes community members support them. “We have realised that our hall desperately needs work if we are to continue to offer the program we think our young people are looking for,” she said. “We are selling Christmas trees at the Mount Clear Scout Hall on the 10th of December from 9am to 3pm. You can buy online or in person, and delivery options are available.” Ms Prior said their community group, and families involved, have been no stranger to the range of challenges presented by the pandemic, but have prevailed, offering young people a range of unique opportunities
like no other. “As a completely volunteerrun group, we are reliant on our families, leaders and the support of the community to offer the broad program that we do,” she said. “After two years of not being able to run normal events our Scouts and leaders have had a busy year, with Venturers kayaking for five days on the Glenelg River, Scouts camping, mountain biking, canoeing and abseiling, as well as attending major events in Anglesea, Elmore and Gembrook with hundreds of other young people. “For all units from Joeys to Cubs, Scouts to Venturers, 2022 has been a full and busy year of adventure and building community.” Contact trees.mountclear scouts@gmail.com for more information. Upgrades for grandstand THE nearly one-hundred-andtwenty-year-old Eastern Oval grandstand is in line for capital upgrades with the works put out for tender by the City of Ballarat last week. The works will focus on restoring parts of the roof and storeroom ceilings, replacing timber floors in the stand, repairing elements of the stormwater system, and adding bird proofing measures. A statement from the municipality said while the works were being undertaken it was likely the bench seating in the grandstand would be removed. The statement also said the historic elm tree found at the front of the stand that was planted in 1874 to honour English cricketer W. G. Grace will be “unaffected by the works.” “The Eastern Oval grandstand has been around longer than anyone in Ballarat has been alive,” said mayor Cr Des Hudson. “Every now and then it is going to need some love and attention, as all historic structures do. “It should only be a matter of months before we see it restored to its magnificent best.” It’s planned the works will get underway in February and be done by the start of the Ballarat Football League season.
