ere’s my argument for shopping local: For all the time and money I’ve spent at home improvement chain stores since becoming the frustrated owner of a 70-year-old house, never once have the owners of said stores devoted a day off to teaching me to shoot sporting clays. Nor have they taught me to fly. Or even invited me to their Christmas parties.

Who says so? Our customers.

Enjoying a girls’ night out

Big box stores lack the personality that local merchants do; the Internet may reRoberts, who conceived, orgamember what site you visited, what you nized and shot our Bridal Inbought and what size you wear, but it can’t spiration Boards spread in our ask after the husband and kids and the 2011 bridal section. health of your own business. It won’t suggest a good topic for a story or tell you a funny story that brightens an otherwise ho-hum day. I count as invaluable sources of information, support and wonderful friendship many of the advertisers in this issue. They are people who help me nurture a vision into life, who teach me something new and wonderful every day and make my job (and hopefully your reading experience) fun and interesting. This prolonged and ongoing downturn in our economy has leveled the playing field a bit, reminding us that fortune is fleeting but family, friends and community will be there to help and support us in good times and bad. I hear much less of the over there vs. over here discussion that once made Brunswick and the Golden Isles a community defined by the geography of the haves and the have-nots. We seem to be sharing with neighbors more, helping those who need it more graciously, and appreciating what we have, no matter how much or how little.

Independent research firm, Customer Service Profiles, routinely gathers feedback from customers of United Community Bank and other banks across the country. Based on this feedback over the past year, United Community Bank has earned an average customer satisfaction rating of 95% the best in the U.S. banking industry. We’re honored by this distinction, and we invite you to join our family of satisfied customers. Come see for yourself why we are... “The Bank That SERVICE Built.” Serving Brunswick, St. Simons, and Waycross 912-267-7283

With so much talk of shopping local during the holiday season, we’re timely with our own discussion of the importance of continuing that tradition all year long. Recovery depends on all of us, and you’ll not find a more talented, creative and genuinely friendly business community than the one in Brunswick and the Golden Isles. We’re starting off the New Year with an issue devoted entirely to all the great and wonderful businesspeople – especially all those fun wedding and special event planners – who make our community the exceptional place that it is. Hopefully, we’ll inspire you to give them all a try, and see what shopping local can do for you.

Developed by NAYS and Athletic Business magazine, the Excellence in Youth Sports Award recognizes youth sports programs that are doing superior jobs of conducting diverse activities with a focus on providing safe and positive experiences for all participants, including children, parents and coaches. “The leadership skills and dedication of our staff to the kids are second to none,” says Steve Mellinger, program manager of Glynn County Recreation and Parks department. “This, along with the cooperation of the parents, volunteer coaches and officials is the real reason why Glynn County has been recognized as one of this year’s winners.” Glynn County Recreation and Parks was chosen from more than 100 youth sports programs nationwide that submitted applications. In addition to their dedication to providing fun and safe sporting experiences to the youth in the community, they are also recognized for their exemplary efforts of ensuring the safety of each participant. Mother-Daughter Team Launches Jewelry Line Poetic Culture is the culmination of several years’ worth of dreams and creative ideas, bounced back and forth between Sunni Riggs and her mother, Marsha Hicks. For several years, the pair discussed the idea of starting their own jewelry and accessory business. Finally deciding to make their dreams a reality, they joined forces to create a new line of handcrafted creations. Most of the pieces that the mother-daughter team creates are one-of-a-kind. You won’t find accessories and jewelry like theirs in any store. They are in the process of setting up an online store, and also host home parties. Learn more at www. poeticculture.com

The Big Read 2011: The Jazz Age Is Back in The Great Gatsby Marsha Hicks and Sunni Riggs of Poetic Culture along with some of the jewelry the pair are selling now.

The Golden Isles was chosen as one of only 75 communities nationwide to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in the latest round of The Big Read. Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association is partnering with Three Rivers Library System, the College of Coastal Georgia and local public school systems to present The Big Read 2011: Coastal Georgia Reads The Great Gatsby in February. There will be an expanded program with discussion groups, exhibits, films, performances, lectures, school programs, and special public events throughout Glynn, McIntosh and Camden counties focusing on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel about America in the 1920s. The great success of the previous Big Read literary initiatives (Fahrenheit 451, To Kill a Mockingbird and the tales and poems of Edgar Allan Poe) was a key factor in receiving the grant. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this valuable and fun communitybuilding program. The Kick-Off Event will take place Feb. 4 at the Historic Ritz Theatre and throughout Downtown Brunswick at First Friday. There will be contests, live music, exhibits and special surprises. Keynote speaker is Penn State University English Professor James L.W. West. West is the editor of a reconstruction of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first attempt at writing The Great Gatsby under a different title. Saint Simons Christian School Students Attend Jekyll Island Convention Center Groundbreaking Students from the 4th and 5th grades and the Middle School Student Council of St. Simons Christian School attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Jekyll Island Convention Center on Dec. 7, 2010. At the ceremony, Governor Sonny Perdue and other guest speakers were asked to make a permanent mark on slabs of wet concrete. The children, guests and employees who attended the event were also asked to leave a mark in the four concrete tiles to signify the permanence of revitalization. The cement tiles will be used in the new Jekyll Island Beach Village that will open in 2012.

SSCS Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Diana Josey assists student Grace Paolini and other students in leaving a handprint in a concrete tile at the groundbreaking ceremony.

St. Simons Island and the other Sea Islands of Georgia have received national recognition recently as travel destinations. National Geographic Traveler’s November/December issue named the Georgia Sea Islands among its “Top Rated Coastal Destinations” in the world. A panel of 340 experts in sustainable tourism and destination stewardship ranked 99 coastal areas that span the globe from Wales to Mozambique. The ranking categories were Top Rated, Doing Well, In the Balance, Facing Trouble and Bottom Rated. The Top Rated category listings are considered by the experts to be “in excellent shape, relatively unspoiled, and likely to remain so.” The only other U.S. destinations listed in the Top Rated category were the Oregon Coast and the Na Pali Coast of Kauai in Hawaii. St. Simons Island was also recognized by travel Web site Yahoo Travel as one of “America’s 10 Best Winter Beach Retreats.” Beth Collins wrote that the island is known for “its historical landmarks, white sand beaches and 99 holes of golf” and that “the leisurely pace of life here will make you want to stay away from anything with a motor.” St. Simons Island also made its debut in the Top 10 listings for Top Islands in North America in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Awards, joining Amelia Island and Longboat Key, Fla.

The Dish With Flo

An elegant plan pb&J&B by Flo Anderson

A

It seems to me that January is the best month to plan a wedding. My partner Jenny and I start getting calls around Thanksgiving and they continue all through the holiday season. The guys must figure if they have to buy a present any way, they might as well go for the BIGGIE! As I might have mentioned before, I have been in the catering business for the past 47 years, and when it comes to wedding receptions, I have seen and done it all. Large seated dinners, small brunches, parties on boats and in airplanes. The largest reception was for 2,000 and I never want to do that again. The wettest reception was during a tremendous thunderstorm, on the marsh, in McIntosh County. One of the trickiest was getting a three-tiered wedding cake to Little Cumberland Island in a small motorboat. What this all amounts to is HOW WELL CAN YOU IMPLEMENT PLAN B. I am a true disciple of “Plan B.” You have to be ready for just about anything. One of the most elaborate parties we ever had the honor of catering was for a wonderful couple on Sea Island. They had a beautiful new home, decorated for the holidays to a “fare thee well” (as my Mom would say), and they were ready for a party. Jenny and I met with the couple and listened to all their grand ideas. There were Christmas trees in every room, so we had to have food and drink in every room. If it was a lovely night, the patio overlooking the marsh was wonderful and could we have an oyster roast going on outside? Of course we could; No problem! On the dining room table (a gorgeous 200-year-old beauty from London) we had to have a roast suckling pig resting on the heirloom silver tray that had been in the family for generations. Wonderful! And the list went on and on. Caviar, smoked

fish, rack of lamb, shrimp prepared many ways, all kinds of sweets. When our hostess finally took a moment to catch her breath, she asked if there was anything she might have missed on the menu. I replied, with a little grin, “ I think you forgot the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.” (I was just trying to be funny.) So help me, the husband pipes up, “Oh, I love those! Let’s have some!”

with the rest of the menu. It turned out to be one of the biggest hits at the party, and has been served at many wonderful gatherings ever since. So, to my many fans and fine readers, I give you the recipe for the famous kids’ sandwich reinvented for the adult palate. Flo Anderson took her first restaurant job at the King and Prince Hotel in 1971. She’s been cooking ever since. Her restaurant, the 4th of May Café, endures in the St. Simons Village. Flo is the mother of three and grandmother to seven, all of whom live on St. Simons Island.

Well, now I was stuck. This is an elegant party and he wants PB&J. Me and my big mouth. Plan B to the rescue. I dreamed up a peanut butter sandwich that would fit in very nicely

The Nature Connection

world-traveling doves by Lydia Thompson

rides and weddings make me think of the rice, birdseed and bubbles often used to wish the bride and groom the best as they begin their life together. The release of doves at the ceremony is another popular way of wishing the newlyweds peace, love and harmony. The turtledove is the favorite bird to release, and is interesting because it is trained to return home. Turtledoves have a look-a-like cousin called the Eurasian Collared-Dove, a non-native species seen throughout North America since establishing a population in Florida several decades ago. Eurasian CollaredDoves are native to Pakistan. In the middle of the 20th Century they began showing up in Europe. They are not migratory, but they will move around from place to place.

mas? When they were placed in the aviary, they started fighting with the other caged birds. As the story goes, the owner could not tolerate these birds fighting. He opened the door and released the doves. This was in the 1970s. They arrived in south Florida in 1982. At that time, there were wild turtledoves in south Florida. A few birders reported seeing the oversize darker doves that were not turtledoves. Birders love a challenge. Therefore, there were many discussions of the finer points of identifying the two species.

In 1990, the first Eurasian Collared-Dove showed up in Glynn County at the port. For a few years, it was a big deal to go over to the port and get the Eurasian CollaredDove on your bird list. Then they started showing up all around the state. From there, they started spreading Turtledoves are west: Texas in 2000, smaller and paler Arizona a couple of than Eurasian years later, then CaliCollared-Doves. fornia. Green Acres

Goin’ Green by amanda kirkland

(Amanda Kirkland introduced herself to me by way of nominating her hardworking husband, Josh, for our annual 20 Under 40 issue recognizing young leaders. The Kirklands operate a family farm on the outskirts of Brunswick, and over the course of a year spent corresponding with Amanda, I’ve found myself laughing out loud at her electronically rendered obervations on farm life, her husband, her kids and the truth about the back-to-basics/locavore/ green way of life. It is my pleasure to share her humor and unique outlook on the new realities of the modern yet not-so-modern way of life facing us all. – The Editor)

farmer. We started with about 25 and now we are up to about 100. Then a fellow farmer mentioned to Josh that he knew about a good deal on a milk cow. We called the man and arranged to pick up the cow and her calf. Well, bless her heart, she was starving to death when we got her, so, we had to make her stop milking and let her get back to a healthy weight. She’s doing very well now and will be ready to milk in the next couple of months. Then, finally, we will be completely self-sufficient.

I

All of this is not to say that I don’t buy anything from the store. There are processed foods that I love. I just don’t want them to be my only option.

had one of those moments, one of those moments when someone says something and you can still feel the sting of their words days later. The moment came when I was sitting with a few other moms at our kids’ swimming lessons. One of the moms turned and said, “Oh, and did you hear that hormones in the food we eat are putting our girls into early puberty?” Immediately, I thought of my two young girls. I thought of how quickly they are growing and I certainly didn’t need any help speeding that process along.

Amanda Kirkland is a Georgia girl who fell in love with a redneck and had four beautiful redneck children. She spends her days taking care of those four kids, about 25 cows, 100 chickens and a garden that has fed her family for at least three decades.

It’s funny how I’ve lived 30 years and never really thought about where my food comes from. Until I heard one sentence from that random mom, I never really thought about how chickens are pumped full of hormones so that they grow so quickly the companies can have them born, grown and in the freezer at the grocery store in a matter of weeks. I never thought about cows being pumped full of artificial growth hormone so that they would produce more milk and in turn more revenue. I knew I had to make a change for my family. I was lucky though. My husband already had a small herd of cows. We also already had a family garden which has been providing our family with fresh vegetables for more than 25 years. I had a thought. I was having more of them, now that I was really putting my brain into gear thinking about where all of our food actually comes from. I was determined to find a way to provide everything for ourselves. I was really halfway there already with the herd of cows and the garden. Next I needed chickens and a milk cow. My husband, Josh, agreed relatively easily to the chickens. I think he thought he would start me out sort of small because he could handle a few chickens if I grew bored with them and this whole idea. His family had owned a milk cow in the past and he knew he wanted no part of milking a cow twice a day. So I got the chickens. They were a little tough to keep alive in the beginning but I think I’ve turned out to be a pretty good chicken Novem ber/Dece mbe r 2 0 1 0

Vignettes of Absurdity

living on love by bud hearn

T

hey arrive on a motorcycle, approach her father and ask his permission to be married. Say they’re in love. Love? How quaint, he thinks.

time. So, with both camps now armed, they call a conference to hash out the details of the marriage vows. The lawyers get hung up in minutiae, specifically on the words “I Do.”

picious eyes dart furtively across the aisle. Hypocrisy smiles politely while denigrating attire and character. Guests speculate on the spectacle’s price tag.

He knows about love, makes his living from it – he’s a divorce attorney. He contemplates their naiveté. It’s a miracle. Somebody is finally asking to marry his daughter. And a man, at that. He questions the man’s sanity, but dismisses the thought when they promise never to move into his home. Surely there’s a God, he concludes.

The groom argues it’s ludicrous to think that he, or any man, can love, honor, comfort and cherish any woman until death. He wants to re-define “love.” He says the commitment is too broad and his experience with women too vast. He prefers to narrow the language to read “I might” instead of “I Do.” He cites the bride’s mother as an example of the law of unintended consequences. The bride’s father agrees to that. He wishes he had done likewise. He prices Harleys later that day.

The Harley waits outside, uncomfortable in its wedding attire. White bows and pink roses demean its masculinity. Its train is a colorful assortment of beer cans. It hopes the Angel Gang doesn’t see it.

He asks if the man has a job and money. The answer is No. He’s not surprised. He asks how and where they’ll live. In love, on the road, they reply. He inquires about the source of money, and learns the nuances of food stamps and unemployment benefits. He rationalizes that love overcomes all lesser things, but plans to increase his life insurance in case. He consents quickly before the man changes his mind. The bride’s mother arranges the wedding details. She burns through their entire savings, borrows more. The groom’s mother is shunned, thought to live in an inferior zip code. The fathers know they’re irrelevant and occupy themselves with golf. The bride’s father mentions the cost of the gown. He’s rebuked and told to sit down, shut up and shell out. He does. God loves cheerful givers, he recalls. That afternoon he explores filing for Chapter 11. The groom gets nervous because her father’s a divorce attorney. He chooses a nightschool lawyer as his best man. He remembers the harsh treatment at the hands of his ex-wife’s lawyer. He hopes to avoid it this

The father is concerned about the vow to accept this man “for richer or poorer.” From what he could see, the groom couldn’t get any poorer, and his prospects for richer seem unattainable. He suggests the vow reads, “For richer not poorer.” They discuss a prenup. The meeting grinds on. They find little for compromise. Decorum soon devolves into shouts and name-calling. They call for a recess. The meeting resumes after a few martinis. Someone suggests the wedding should occur in front of a judge. Another laughs, says a jury is needed. The minister intercedes, prays and offers a compromise. They grudgingly accept, adjourn and retreat to the bar. Even the minister shows up, having slipped in from the alley. Preachers are sneaky about such things.

The bride glides down the aisle. She grins at the groom who’s grasping the altar for support. The lawyers wink at the minister. Her father wears the obligatory smile, his mind on maxed-out credit cards and barren bank accounts. He considers whispering, “Honey, it’s not too late to back out.” But thinks the better of it. He recites his five words, “Her mother and I do.” He wants to add, “With pleasure,” but is overruled. He sits down again. The minister charges the couple with covenants dating to the Middle Ages. Their ears listen while their lips yearn to kiss. He pauses at the “I Do” finale. The church becomes silent. The guests are tense. Nothing moves. No one breathes. After the tortuous silence, they affirm, “I Do.” She adds, “But if love fails, all he gets is the Harley, and I move back in with daddy.” The bride’s father faints. On the way down he’s heard to say, “Son, if that happens, I’m leaving on my Harley.” Love triumphs again.

The wedding day arrives. With it comes the inflow of flowers and the outflow of cash. The supporting actors – bridesmaids, groomsmen and guests – complete the scene. Sus-

Par for the Course

A Guide to Cold play by scott turner, PGA

N

ow that winter is here, we must think of how to play shots this time of the year when the ball does not compress very well and when the wind plays a role in our play. When playing in cold windy weather always plan on the golf ball not going as far as normal. Take an extra club and grip down on it 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Next move the ball back in your stance so that you are playing it close to the middle or just a little behind the middle of your stance. When taking the backswing try to keep it a little short of your normal swing, drive down hard through the ball and keep the follow through as low as possible. Driving down through the ball and keeping the follow through low will make for solid contact and for a low ball flight. When the weather is cold it affects the short game just as much as it does the full swing. For pitching and chipping the ball you should use the least lofted club possible to get the ball on the ground as soon as possible. For example, if you normally use a PW or SW from just off the green try using a 8 iron or 9 iron. This will allow you to make a shorter stroke therefore making better contact and hitting more consistent shots. Putting becomes a little easier in the cold weather if you can keep your hands warm. Most golf courses over-seed their greens in winter with a rye mixture. This cold weather grass will not be as fast. So when playing on these greens don’t allow for as much break and hit each putt firmly, making sure it rolls one-to-two-feet past the cup.

Scott Turner is a PGA-certified golf pro at Sanctuary Cove in Waverly.

SHOP LOCAL by bob dart

Diane Crawford has seen panic in the eyes of brides-to-be who purchased wedding dresses online. “The girl knows it’s wrong from the time she sees it,” says Diane, who owns Lady in White, the bridal boutique in downtown Brunswick. “She knows she can’t walk down the aisle in that dress.” But what can she do? Cyberspace can be a slow place to make a quick exchange when a wedding is a week away. Glynn County Finance Director Phyllis McNicholl has watched sales tax revenue fall for several years and anticipates another 10 percent decline this fiscal year. That means less money for our schools and public projects. Of course, when a Glynn County teacher or public employee shops in Jacksonville or Savannah, it does boost sales tax revenue for schools and public works in Duval and Chatham counties. Oops. Marcia Stutz has a sign on her bookstore on Newcastle Street pointing out that for every $25 a customer spends at Hattie’s Books, $13.75 stays in town. For every $25 spent when ordering books over Amazon.com, “zero” stays here.

ers, our taxpayers, yes, our advertisers. They are sponsors of our kids’ teams, contributors to our charities and churches, our volunteers, our families, our friends. And some of them are in trouble. In these hard times, our independent merchants warn, local folks especially need to shop locally or they’ll soon find that they have no place local left to shop. “The locally owned shops will disappear,” says Karen Hendrix, who says her business at Accents Marketplace on St. Simons Island is about half of what it was four years ago. “We’re going to be run over by corporate America.” Across our community, we don’t have to look hard to find an empty display window or a boarded-up storefront. We need to think more about the ripple effect of those closings. “We’re all dependent on each other financially,” says Diane Crawford of Lady in White. “People buying over the Internet or going to other places to shop are taking money out of the community. They could be paying someone’s salary here.” Indeed, a Civic Economics study in Grand Rapids, Mich., showed that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 stays in the local community compared to $43 if spent at a national chain.

But maybe the reader saved a buck by buying a book online. Y’all may have surmised by now that this is a paean to patronizing the retailers of Glynn County. They are our neighbors, our employ-

24

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

Shopping online or out of town has an even more devastating impact than shopping in a locally situated “big box” chain store, of course, since none of that revenue is recycled back through the local economy.

In these hard times, our independent merchants warn, local folks especially need to shop locally or they’ll soon find that they have no place local left to shop.

“The thought of keeping money in the community just doesn’t cross the mind of many shoppers,” says Ewell Gay, owner of Maggie’s on St. Simons. “I don’t think they care,” says Melissa Bagby, owner of The Market of Newcastle Street. “When they’re looking for a deal, they’re looking for a deal.” Sales taxes come from both locally owned stores and from local branches of national chains. These funds are needed by the county but they are dwindling. The total sales tax is 7 cents per dollar. Of this, four cents goes to state coffers. The remaining three pennies are sent back to the county. The one-cent Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) is used for general purposes. The one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is used for building and maintaining parks, roads or other public facilities. The remaining penny Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) goes to the school board. Each of these one-cent sales taxes brought in $22.5 million in 2008 but was down to about $18.5 million in fiscal year 2010 and is expected to fall another 10 percent in the coming fiscal year. Property taxes pay for most of the local government and schools – cops and teachers, if you will. It doesn’t take Alan Greenspan to figure out that when a business goes belly-up, the property tax base suffers. The main competitors of G.J. Ford Bookshop are Amazon.com and electronic devices like Kindle and iPad, says Mary Jane Reed, owner of the St. Simons bookstore. Neither pays local taxes. On the essentials of retail – service, quality, price – Glynn County businesses are comparable with their competitors in Savannah, Jacksonville or Atlanta, says Woody Woodside, president of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce. In fact, our shopping is such an attraction that about 40 percent of the county’s tax revenue comes from purchases made by visitors. continued on page 89

Delicacies

Tapenade Larry Eisenberg, a musician, artist, chef and entrepreneur then living in Orlando, was in New Orleans to tune pianos about a decade ago when he fell in love with a muffuletta at Central Grocery on the edge of the French Quarter. More specifically he was smitten by the olive tapenade which tops the salami, ham and provolone piled between slices of Italian bread. Several twists in our story later, Larry and his partner Vicki Waddell-Forton are living above Olive Affairs, their shop and lunch spot in historic downtown Darien, and making muffulettas and jars of olive tapenade that won top prize in the jams, jellies and sauces category of the 2010 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest. Their gourmet tapenade contains Spanish and Portuguese olives, fresh garlic, capers, pimentos, herbs, lemon juice and anchovy. A vegan version is available without anchovy.

Wines Okay y’all, for all us good ol’ boys, there are now downhome sipping wines from the vineyards of South Georgia’s scenic Berrien County and available in six-packs. How ‘bout that Hahira Red, an approachable Cabernet Sauvingnon and Merlot blend aged in French oak barrels, or Blackjack, a blueberry muscadine, or Miss Blue, a blueberry muscadine? These selections – along with Jubilee Watermelon wine – are from Horse Creek Winery outside of Nashville, Ga., and can be purchased through True Vine Wine and Gourmet shop in downtown Brunswick. All funnin’ aside, True Vine’s owner Brian Green has included South Georgia in his very serious and successful global search for memorable and affordable wines. He stocks Bobcat Blush from Still Pond Winery, whose muscadine grapes are grown in vineyards near peanut and cornfields south of Albany. Savannah Hearts, a full-bodied red muscadine, comes from Shannon Vineyards near Sylvania.

Everyone knows that City Market in Brunswick has been a great place to go for fresh seafood since 1948. Bruce Collins, a grandson of founder “Cap’n Red” Stanford, recommends redfish and speckled trout this time of year. But even some regular customers fail to notice the rack of jars of homestyle relishes and pickles made nearby and sold under City Market’s own label. Some examples: Green Tomato Pickles. Sweet Fire Bread and Butter Pickles. Pickled Asparagus. Pickled Okra. Garlic Stuffed Olives. Sweet Potato Pecan Butter. Dilled Green Beans. Who knew, huh?

Cheeses

The goats and jersey cows of Sweet Grass Dairy graze on rolling pastures near Thomasville, Ga., and produce the milk and cream that are the foundation of an assortment of cheeses. “I order from them every two weeks,” says Russ Quarterman, owner of the Waterfront Wine and Gourmet shop in downtown Darien. He can barely keep them in stock. “They do very, very well,” he exclaims. The dairy was established in 2000 by Al and Desiree Wehner and continues to be a family operation. Russ said the popular cheeses he sells include Thomasville Tomme, which is buttery and mellow, and Green Hill, which is soft, creamy and “brie-like.”

Shrimp

In the whole wide world, Wild Georgia Shrimp can be fished only from the offshore waters and estuaries between Savannah and St. Mary’s. We’re blessed to live smack dab in the middle of that region of marshes and barrier islands. Tourists are nearly as blessed just to visit here. Shrimp are born to swim free, not to be cultivated in Asian ponds. Order Wild Georgia Shrimp at one of the many restaurants in the area that feature them on their menus. Pick up a mess from a shrimp boat coming into the docks in Brunswick or Darien. Fried. Boiled. Blackened. Grilled. ‘Nuff said.

Brunswick Stew Brunswick Stew is about as much a part of the table-top scene hereabouts as live oaks draped with Spanish moss are a part of the landscape. Only those culinary heretics of Brunswick County, Va., would argue against this historic victual being a local delicacy. Everybody’s got a recipe for the long-simmering stew with ingredients that usually include tomatoes, corn, onions, chicken, beef, pork and okra but can range to rabbit, squirrel, lima beans, quail, venison or wild turkey. At Blackwater Grill on St. Simons Island, it comes as a sundae with Brunswick stew between layers of rice or crumbled cornbread and cole slaw.

French Fries

Among my early memories are of my daddy backing our black Plymouth into a space by a billboard behind Twin Oaks and a carhop bringing out a window tray with big, hot orders of battered french fries for him, my mama and me. We’d watch teenagers cruise the parking lot and we’d gobble down those special fries. My daddy would flash the headlights for pick-up when we finished. There are other restaurants in Glynn County that serve battered fries – Mack’s Barbecue and the Crab Trap come to mind – but no place has served them longer or better than Twin Oaks, the venerable barbecue joint on Norwich Street in Brunswick. I’ve never even encountered battered fries outside of my beloved coastal Georgia home – which was reason enough to retire here.

Sauce Palmetto Juice has no palmetto in it, says the lady who makes it. “I’ve been making this sauce for nearly 40 years. It’s an old family recipe. I just changed the name when I moved to Darien (from Patterson, Ga.),” explains Carolyn Thomas. Ingredients for the all-purpose sauce are, of course, secret. It goes good on slow-smoked pig meat. Carolyn has been shipping out bottles of Palmetto Juice to friends and friends of friends for years but her sauce came to the attention of the state agriculture department when she was a finalist in the 2009 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest. Regulations required her to install a commercial kitchen to expand her business and she’s doing just that. In January, she will begin selling her sauce in specialty stores in southeast Georgia, including some in Darien. She also sells it at festivals, too.

Cosmetics

St. Simons Island resident Suzanne LeRoux launched One Love Organics, an all-natural beauty line, last fall, but it was an idea she fell in love with long ago. Preservative-free cleansers and moisturizers that serve double and even triple-duty – cleaning and moisturizing, in some cases both skin and hair, and saving the planet in small batches – what’s not to love about that? Suzanne says the reason manufacturers use preservatives is to retard the growth of microbes that thrive in water. By making water-free products, Suzanne produces a beauty line that never is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way, and lasts forever. Less packaging, less chemicals, and only the freshest natural ingredients – including watermelon seed oil and organic Bulgarian rose oil – which makes the entire line suitable, as Suzanne says, “for everyone in the family, from the newest babies to the greatest of grandmas.” Be among the first to fall in love with One Love Organics; buy online at www.oneloveorganics.com.

s it delicious irony or just one of those funky quirks of fate that the opening salvo on Richard Nazzaro’s wine list is fired by one of history’s preeminent crack shots? A valid question in light of the fact that five years ago, Rich took up the shotgun on a casual outing to the Sea Island Shooting School. He has since fired his way into the Master class of sporting clay shooters who compete globally, the upper echelon of shotgun enthusiasts ranked by the National Sporting Clays Association, which counts 22,000 members all over the United States and abroad. Rich claims to divide his “boring life” in more or less equal measures between the pursuit of his sport of choice and his eponymic Italian restaurant on St. Simons Island. It is there that the ghost of Ernest Hemingway – who lived and died by a 12-gauge shotgun – rallies the oenophiles in the house with an excerpt from Death in the Afternoon, a treatise on the virtues of bullfighting that makes an intriguing comparison of the kindred passions that drive aficionados of a brutal blood sport and connoisseurs of fine wine to pursue their respective bliss. “Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing which may be purchased,” the late, great Papa Hemingway says.

A man with such refined yet potentially lethal tastes is a fascinating creature, no?

The different sizes of clays: top to bottom: “mini” “midi” “standard” “???????” “rabbit”

Rich, the co-owner of Nazzaro’s Italian Cuisine for 10 years now, has completed the first course toward his “doctorate” in wine, accreditation as a Master Sommelier. He also traded his Lexus SUV for a four-wheel drive Ford F-150 pick-up truck (bought from King’s Colonial Ford in Brunswick because the owners have patronized his restaurant). There are two double-barrel shotguns in custom-made cases stowed under the rear seat of the crew cab and an abundance of ammo in the tool box mounted to the bed. You might think you know the man by his habits, but Rich Nazzaro is not driven by the same thirst for blood that characterizes most shootists. “The majority of the people who do this are hunters. I don’t want to kill anything,” he says, but he surely could if he had to. This man is a study in contraries and contradictions, much like the sport he excels in; Sporting clays began as a highly competitive gentlemen’s game, often referred to as “golf with a shotgun.” The similarities between the two begin and end every time the golf cart stops at another stand on the shooting course at Amelia Shotgun Sports in Yulee, Fla. Not to overdo the Hemingway comparison, but the course is owned by a man named Clyde Goodbread, a dead-ringer for Hemingway whose presence is all the more disconcerting because he’s standing mere feet from a gun safe stocked with shotguns that sell for upwards of $85,000. One assumes he knows his way around those weapons, but still ... . And off we go for a round, following the Master shooter who drives with his right hand and holds in his left an unloaded Zoli over-and-under with the barrels broken open. It’s really hard to not look cool with a big gun perched casually on your hip. Never mind his neat little trick of catching the spent shells that fly from the Zoli’s breech when he opens it to reload, a stunt that garners Rich as much attention as his shooting at tournaments around the country. “People ask me to teach them how to do this,” he says in a tone that suggests he’s not quite sure what all the fuss is about. A tall, handsome, third-generation Italian-American, Rich actually confesses to having considered opening a Tex-Mex restaurant before business partner John Wirtz tipped the scales in favor of Italian with his culinary talent for the genre. (Just imagine: “Bubba Nazzaro’s.”) Rich is no Bubba, despite his fondness for guns and the Ford pick-up truck. The gun he competes with is an Italian-made Zoli, one of his sponsors; his ammunition is made by Fiocchi Ammunition USA, another sponsor. He competed in Italy last year, and plans a shooting trip to France this year. He’s competed throughout Georgia and several other states alongside farmers who shoot pump action shotguns and drive old beat-up pick-up trucks and neurosurgeons who arrive in Lexuses and shoot $80,000 shotguns. Sporting clays events are staged at 5-star and 5-diamond luxury resorts and holein-the-woods gun clubs situated at the end of long, winding country dirt roads.

Amelia Shotgun Sports is one of the latter, and that’s what Rich says he loves about the sport. “The terrain is beautiful. The people are really nice.” The club’s teaching pro, John Woolley, is one of three instructors – along with John Kent and Moe Dog Kent – who’ve shaped Rich’s style; he, in turn, is gracious about sharing guns, ammo and technique with novice shooters. “You’ll hit one before the day is over,” he promises as the clays fly, roll and bounce from all directions on the course, and he’s as good as his word. Sporting clays are more challenging than trap and skeet because they simulate the unpredictability of live quarry. FITASC (Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse) is a French variant, where the targets present as rabbits (bouncing or rolling on the ground), chandelles (flying up, turning and then dropping), overhead, trap (outgoing), crossing, teal (launching straight up into the air) and incoming birds. In addition the standard safety gear – shooting glasses and hearing protection – FITASC has a dress code, which puts off many competitors.

42

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

“Some people don’t shoot it because of the rules,” Rich says. “You have to wear closed shoes, collared shirts.” He first competed in a FITASC event in 2008; it was the FITASC World Championship that he attended in Italy last July. After enduring the uncertainty of the economy these past couple of years – “When the economy took a dip everything took a dip. My personal income out of the company took a vast dip. I enjoyed shooting and didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep shooting.” – Rich is looking forward to his best year shooting. He’s hoping to make the All-State Team shooting for the Georgia Sporting Clays Association, of which he is a board member, and is preparing for his first NSCA tournament of the year in Okeechobee, Fla. in February. “Until we develop a way like golf ... to show it on television and make it appealing, there won’t be much money in this sport,” Rich says. But man does not live by bread alone. “I’m very competitive. This satisfies my competitiveness.”

A Swinging’ Summit: The event planners are the event in these pre-holiday gatherings at Bubba’s Up and Ocean Lodge on St. Simons Island. Known informally as The Brat Pack (we like to think in homage to their BR-idal connections rather than their behavior), this group’s flair for organizing classy events harkens back to Old Hollywood’s Rat Pack. You could say they’re a modern mix of the two – the chutzpah of youth and the chronology that makes it legal to act upon it. It’s a group that numbers about 15 in all, and yes, there is duplication in their services and competition within their ranks – just as was the case among the original Rat Pack of old and the Brat Pack of less old, the young actors and actresses who dominated the silver screen in the 1980s. There’s even a hint of the Ocean’s 11 remake team in there, the George Clooney/Brad Pitt/ Julia Roberts ensemble that made crimes against Las Vegas casinos a hip movie theme again. There on the end, his black tie loosened for a night of fun, is Stacy Bass, the Frank Sinatra/Judd Nelson/George Clooney avatar who brings just the right mix of experience and casual indifference to any role; Justin Henshaw, with his fedora tipped rakishly to the side, is the Dean Martin/Rob Lowe/Brad Pitt personality in the mix, the owner of a DJ service that is always the life of the party and the impetus behind the group’s gatherings. “We see each other every weekend (working weddings and events). We all like each other.” That regal creature in purple, Miss Terrica Skaggs of cocktails+details, is broadening her horizons lately with regularly scheduled girls nights out, which make it possible to experience her fabulous party planning skills without having to marry to do it. Of course, it’s hard to not be fabulous when love and happiness are your business.

My mommy is so beautiful. Wanna know her secret?

I tried everything. Exercise, dieting...you name it. Nothing worked. So...I decided it was time to get my “pre-mommy” body back. It’s no secret - it’s tough to get back into shape after having children. I wouldn’t trade my family for the world - but I really wasn’t happy with my figure. What I wanted was breast enhancement, a tummy tuck, body contouring - Dr. Curtsinger calls it a “Mommy Makeover”. I call it a great new me! I am so glad to have a “pre-baby” figure again!

The Good, the Bad, and the Great: By Annie Akins

Dos and Don ’ts for Choosing an d Working With Your

Wedding Band

Y

ou’re planning your big day and you’ve already made tons of decisions. You’ve chosen a fabulous location, you’ve made the tastiest food selections, and you’ve picked the prettiest the flowers and decorations. There’s just one more thing: the band. A wedding band can make all the difference in a reception. A bad band can kill an evening, a good band will get you through the night, but a great band will make sure you have the time of your life on your big day. So, in addition to the obvious stuff (like how much they charge, how long they’ve been in business, and whether they’ve played at your venue before), here are some useful tips to finding and working with the perfect band for your once-in-a-lifetime event:

1

DO make sure to get the right size band. You won’t want a solo musician for a party with 250 guests, and you won’t need a 10-piece big band for an intimate reception for 35 of your closest friends and family. A trio may be the right size, but it’s no good if it’s made up of a drummer, a percussionist, and a trombone player. You need both the right number and the right make up of musicians. A bad band is one size fits all; a good band will be flexible in size. A great band will be flexible in both size and instrumentation

2

DON’T hire a band that can only play one style of music. No matter how much you and your future spouse enjoy a particular style, think of your guests! Though you may love bluegrass with a near religious fervor, your guests will want to hear other styles during the party. Frank Sinatra may be the coolest, but an entire night of ol’ Blue Eyes wears thin. A bad wedding band will be limited to only one style; a good band will have a few styles to choose from. A great band can play a great variety of styles and tempos while catering to your particular likes and dislikes.

3

DO find out your band’s break schedule to maximize dancing time. Yes, your band will take breaks during the reception. Musicians are not machines – to sound great they need to take a little breather every once in a while, to grab a drink of water, etc. A bad band will take lots of long breaks whenever they feel like it. A good band will keep their breaks short. A great band will work with you and your coordinator to make sure their few, brief breaks are scheduled during times when you don’t need them – like during cake cutting and toasts – to make sure you get in all the dancing that you can.

4

DON’T forget to talk about your first dance. This is your first twirl around the dance floor as husband and wife, and you want it to be perfect. A bad band will only have a couple of songs to choose from for your first dance; a good band will have a better selection of songs. A great band will have a long list of wonderful songs to choose from, and will even offer to learn a special song for this big moment.

5

DO ask the band if they will perform emcee duties. A bad band won’t do any emceeing for you. A good band will let you use their microphone. A great band will do all the emceeing

64

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

and make announcements for you, introduce the bridal party, and let you use their mics for toasts and blessings.

6

DON’T neglect the look of the band. If your wedding is formal you don’t want the band showing up in T-shirts and shorts. A band’s presentation is important. You don’t want your beautifully decorated room ruined by a scruffy looking band. A bad band will look like, well, a bad band. A good band will look neat and presentable. A great band will have coordinated looks for all the members, for formal as well as casual occasions.

7

DO warn the band of any songs you absolutely DON’T want to hear. Once, at a reception for an older couple, we started playing “Moon River,” which is usually a great selection for an older audience. Suddenly the grown son of the bride ran up to the bandstand to inform us that was “Mom and Dad’s song.” Needless to say, we quickly transitioned into another number. Ever since then we ask the bride and groom for what we call musical landmines. A bad band will play whatever songs they know. A good band will pay attention and adjust their playlist if a particular style clears the dance floor. A great band will already know which songs you love, and to which styles to avoid, and plan their sets accordingly. And speaking of set lists …

8

DON’T give the band a long list of songs they absolutely must play. This hamstrings the band, and prevents them from reading the crowd and choosing songs accordingly. You wouldn’t dream of hiring a chef and then telling him what spices he should use, so why would you do that to the band? You’ve hired professionals; let them do their job. A bad band will play whatever they feel like playing; a good band will play a reasonable selection of songs. A great band will have talked to you well before the party to discover your favorites, and play those and a variety of styles and tempos, to keep the party moving in the right direction.

be made up of professional musicians who’ve spent years practicing and rehearsing together. Your slightly inebriated college pal may think he’s the next American Idol, but that’s probably just the tequila talking; don’t expect the band to welcome him to the bandstand (unless they’re a bad band. They’ll let anyone join in – it’s less work for them!). A good band might let a [sober] guest sit in. A great band is a well-oiled machine with lots of practice under our belts, and we’d rather do it ourselves, thanks.

10

DON’T assume the band will be able to deal with your technology issues – like the PowerPoint presentation that you worked so hard on that’s on your laptop that needs to be connected to the projector. We’re musicians, not tech geeks. Bad, good, or great band, you’re on your own there!

11

DON’T let your guests (or their kids) play with the band’s equipment. These are professional musicians and those are the tools they use to make their living. Most of that equipment is very expensive, heavy, and electrified. You wouldn’t dream of letting your friends (or their kids) run through the hotel kitchen and play with stuff – it’s the same thing with music gear. Bad, good and great bands, we all say the same thing: Keep off the gear!

12

DON’T forget to feed the band. Musicians love to be fed; they’ll be grateful for even a boxed lunch. A bad band will hit the buffet before your guests do (we’ve seen it happen). A good band will hold off on the buffet till all the guests have been fed. A great band … well, they’ll just go hungry if you don’t feed them.

13

DO give the band a tip IF they’ve done a fabulous job and gone above and beyond for your big day.

Annie Akins is the lead vocalist in the musical duos After Hours and timandannie with, of course, her husband, Tim Akins. The duo performs a variety of favorites as After Hours at weddings and special events, and contemporary Christian music as timandannie.

9

DON’T confuse a live band with karaoke. The wedding band is not a backup group for your guests; the band you choose should

Good Hair Day By Leslie Jeter | photography by Melissa dickinson

A bride will inevitably devote considerable amounts of time preparing for two of the most momentous decisions she will make for her wedding day: Which dress is fated to accompany her during the ceremony and which invigorating yet matchless and outlasting style of hair will flatter her dress in ways that are bold and subtle all at the same time. Well, no matter with which dress a bride falls madly in love with, we’ve got the hair part covered! Enter Jimmy VanBoxel, owner of Uberzoot Hair Company. Having just returned from a hair competition in Paris, France, Jimmy offered an original perspective on landing on an unbeatable style with a unique Jimmy VanBoxel twist: Let your imagination run wild! We spent two days in the salon and like a painter with a blank canvas, Jimmy fearlessly performed art pieces on the crowns of four models, each with a different personal style, hair length and texture. And despite the differences of the models, I observed something very important when it comes to styling hair of any type: Absolutely nothing is impossible. And the results were astonishing! Jimmy proved that there is a style from which every bride can draw inspiration, whether she’s looking for a “classy” look or for a bit more “edge.” When Jimmy had completed each of his four masterpieces, I asked him to name them and provide a brief description so that any bride searching for that perfect “do” can be confident that she, too, can simultaneously express personality and brilliance with plenty of confidence:

72

g o l d e n i s le smagazine . c o m

“Vines & Roses” Inspired by the beauty and charm of an old English garden, “roses” are made in the hair by loosely tying knots in the crown and securing them with a large bobby pin. The hair is then curled with a large curling iron and the sides are loosely pinned up to the roses in the crown, allowing the ends to cascade into the center back.

“Faux Hawk”

with optional “Sassy Reception”

Brides looking for cropped options can do much more than the standby curly cues. This style is fun and simple and gives the option to deconstruct the style towards the end of the night for a more casual setting. The Faux Hawk was first introduced to satisfy the edgier style of trendsetters, but was quickly adopted by anyone who wanted a fresh new special event look, and also needed a little volume up top.

“Neo-Classic Bun” Perfect for modern as well as traditional weddings, the Neo-Classic Bun is simple and elegant. This style can make fine or thin hair seem much thicker by backcombing triangular sections all over the head and then smoothing with a boar bristle hair dressing brush. Large bobby pins are then used toward the lower back of the head to create a dramatic indentation before the bun is wrapped up and secured. (with optional “Runway Distortion”) The Runway Distortion Option is perfect for those bold enough to “let their hair down” and have fun on the wedding night! Just disconnect the pins securing the bun and use fingers to break it apart. Another option is to disconnect the bun and use a brush to detangle the backcombing and brushing out to create a smooth, half-up, half-down look, still taking advantage of the great volume on top.)

“The Messy Beehive” This uber-glam girl creates a fashion-forward style and wears it fearlessly: Red lips, high open-toed boots, and of course on the wedding day, the Messy Beehive – bold and sophisticated, yet delightfully unrefined and tousled. The hair is sprayed with texturizing spray and then backcombed and loosely folded in the back like a French twist, emphasizing height on the top and crown.

Never let fear of standing out in the crowd ruin your wedding day! Unleash the potential and untame that mane for the day you decide to say, “Forever, I do!” Leslie Jeter is a full-time nanny, aspiring writer and film photographer. Little Things Mean A Lot:

WEDDING

DETAILS by jennifer page

They say you shouldn’t sweat the small stuff but they also say God is in the details. Therefore, a bride who frets the smallest decisions – wedding favors, cake details, flower arrangements – must simply be channeling the divine for the most important day of her life, and truly, who can blame her? No day is more important than the one on which we vow our eternal love and devotion to another, and Jennifer Page of Jennifer Leigh Photography offers this study of wedding day details from throughout the year, a photo essay that says more than a thousand words ever could about what’s important in these bride’s lives.

Shop Local continued from page 25

“I have a better selection of higher-end, hand-dyed specialty yarns” than big-city shops do, says Bobo Anderson, owner of the Stitchery on St. Simons Island. Indeed, Susan Bates of Greensboro, Ga., had come to the Stitchery while visiting relatives here, rather than shopping for yarn in Atlanta. But while some customers come from out of town, some local textile artists go out of town for supplies. There is still a stubborn misperception that there are better choices and prices elsewhere, according to local shop owners. At Maggie’s – the name a composite of family initials – the wares are carefully priced, says owner Ewell Gay. In the women’s wear market, the customers know prices and go elsewhere if apparel is over-priced.

MORE meaning CUSTOMER SERVICE, SELECTION, QUALITY, LEVEL OF ATTENTION, EYE FOR DETAIL...

And his customers park right in the front of the store, he points out. Local merchants say they practice what they preach. “I use the services of people who shop with me,” says Elizabeth Jordan, who has Lady Outfitters stores in Brunswick and on St. Simons. She says she changed dentists because one wouldn’t shop locally. Local shops offer what distant ones can’t, Elizabeth says. “We know our customers by name, call their husbands with gift ideas, exchange gifts for the son who says, ‘What were you thinking, mom?’” They know their customers and order wares accordingly. “We still get a lot of people who ask for a good beach read,” says Mary Jane Reed of G.J. Ford. “I pride myself on not having what everyone else has,” says Melissa Bagby of The Market on Newcastle. Shopping locally saves on time and gas and eases exchanges, the merchants say. When a bride buys a wedding dress at a local shop, she has convenience in fittings and alterations, says Diane Crawford at Lady in White. And “quite a few times,” young women have had to buy one of her dresses at the last minute after the ones they’ve ordered over the Internet wouldn’t do, she recalls. Then the panic in their eyes is replaced by relief. Bob Dart retired as a national correspondent in the Washington Bureau of Cox Newspapers. He has moved home to Glynn County where he grew up. His book, a collection of his stories about the South is entitled Downhome: Dispatches from Dixie.
