MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear GOA Community, The Sukkah is a deeply symbolic structure. We are taught to decorate our Sukkot as a form of hiddur mitzvah, demonstrating our joy and dedication to the ancient covenant between God and the Jewish people. The Sukkah recalls our 40-year camping trip on the way from Egypt to Israel. It also reminds us that we are resilient, and that the most important structures in life are not physical but psychological. When we build a Sukkah we are also building Jewish identity, teaching our children to identify with the wanderings of our ancestors thousands of years ago, and to think of themselves as builders. It is not just a temporary shelter that they are building, but the awareness that they are part of an ancient tradition, and that God rejoices in our celebration of Sukkot. At Golda Och Academy, we build and celebrate Jewish identity every day. Our talented teachers inculcate good character, knowledge, identity, and community. And year after year we start over again, meeting students as they are today, and preparing them for the challenges that lie ahead. This impact report gives you detailed information about the state of our school. I am proud to report that enrollment is growing, our staff is strong and getting stronger, and our community is deeply committed to the mission of Golda Och Academy. This past year we underwent a rigorous external review by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools, which approved our re-accreditation. We have much to celebrate! I am proud of our talented team of faculty and staff who work with such diligence and skill year after year to build this school. I am grateful for the parents and grandparents who partner with us in helping our students grow in all these ways. And I feel blessed to spend my days with an extraordinary group of students whose curiosity and kindness give me hope for the future. May God spread a sukkat shalom, a shelter of peace, over our school and its students so that we are all blessed with a joyous and successful new year.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR It is so exciting to know that Golda Och Academy is starting the 2023-24 school year on a high note. For the first time in many years, enrollment in our school has significantly increased, and we are pleased to welcome new students and families to our community. We owe a huge thank you to our very talented Head of School, Rabbi Danny Nevins, and we are blessed with a dedicated faculty and administration who have worked tirelessly on behalf of our students and our school. Thanks to the support of parents, grandparents, alumni, donors, and students, we have been able to spread the message to our broader community. Our current families, as well as our alumni families, have been exemplary ambassadors for the school. In addition to growing enrollment; we have surpassed our annual fundraising goals and are improving our physical structure. Shortly, we will be adding a greenhouse to our Lower School, an astronomical observatory to our Upper School campus, and the entrance to our Upper School has been enhanced over the summer. Thank you to our Board of Trustees, who have played significant roles in our accomplishment. We are fortunate to have such skilled and devoted board members. We welcome all members of our community to find ways in which they can help strengthen our beloved school as donors and volunteers. On behalf of our entire Board of Trustees, L’Shana Tovah. MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Dear GOA Community, There is a special feeling of sweetness and joy in the air at the beginning of each new school year. It started when we welcomed back alumni in August for our annual College BBQ event, continued during Faculty week as we met new colleagues and culminated with back to school when we greeted so many beautiful new students and families. It is a truly inspiring moment when we all come together for a new year of learning, growth and opportunities at GOA. I am especially proud that our Administration and Board of Trustees have taken tremendous steps forward in advancing our Strategic Plan (2019-2024) including the following: Our exciting new Dr. Michael Och Faculty Excellence Endowment Fund, supported by the Jane and Dan Och Family Foundation and the Wilf Family Foundation have made it possible for us to launch a transformational new Faculty Excellence Initiative that is helping us to recruit and retain the finest faculty to our school. Our expanded Student Services program under the leadership of Lori Jaffe is serving the diverse needs of our students. At the Eric F. Ross Upper School Campus, we have renovated our first floor entry way, hallways, gym and restrooms to elevate our student experience. We also will be dedicating a new Observatory so that our students can engage in astronomy learning. Finally, we look forward to final approval on our Wilf Lower School Greenhouse and its installation. We have provided new and enhanced ways to make our school affordable and accessible to our families. This has all been made possible by generous donor partners to our Go Forward campaign, a bold five-year capital and endowment campaign challenge that is helping us dream big for the future of our school. WHY WE GIVE By Jessica Moss When asked to support the GO Forward campaign, David and I did not need convincing – it was an immediate yes. As an early childhood and elementary educator, I am keenly aware of how necessary it is for teachers to continually build their knowledge and have access to the resources they need in order to provide a first-class learning experience to their students. As parents, we have witnessed firsthand the impact our dedicated Golda Och Academy teachers can make in a child's life and strongly believe they deserve our unyielding support.
So, when people ask why we support GO Forward, we tell them it is because it is our responsibility to support our teachers. It is our responsibility to help our teachers fulfill their desire to meet each child where they are at academically and educate them in a way that allows them to flourish as individual learners. We tell them it is because every investment we make in the strength of Golda Och Academy’s teachers is also an investment in the strength of our children, the strength of our school and the strength of our community.
Education is not simply about presenting information – there is a science to educating each student as a unique individual. Similar to other scientific fields, the tools and processes used to teach continue to evolve and improve as we understand more about child development and how students learn. Furthermore, the relationship between professional development for our teachers and the physical space and materials available for teaching is symbiotic.
