From the Head of School 50th Anniversary

W

ith the 2014-2015 school year now behind us, it’s exciting to take a step back and celebrate our many accomplishments. Thanks to the dedication of our talented professional staff and lay leadership, we opened our doors last September with an increase in enrollment. It was wonderful to see our two campuses bustling with activity from the onset of the year and seeing our talented and dedicated faculty teaching our students day in and day out.

We also began the school year with our sights set on the completion of our Building on Tradition Campaign. Having worked tirelessly on the campaign since its inception in 2010, our Development team was committed to meeting the $15M Och Challenge and successfully reached the finish line. It is almost impossible for us to fully express our appreciation to the many donors and leaders who have supported this challenge except to say that all who have answered the call should feel immense pride knowing that this campaign has ensured our school’s long-term financial sustainability and has made major contributions toward affordability, excellence and capital improvements.

Thanks to the generous support of Dr Lynne B Harrison, our Upper School broke ground this past June on its new, state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Center that will be named in honor of Dr. Harrison’s $1M gift to our school. We believe that this center will not only enhance our STEM program, but also our entire approach to the teaching of these disciplines in our school.

The Spring Gala in June was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our school and to honor Dr Harrison and past Board Chair Sheryl Pearlstein. Because of the work these two women leaders have done for our school, especially in the area of STEM, it was fitting that we honored them together at an event that also highlighted our achievements in STEM education.

As we begin the 2015-2016 school year, we look forward, with great anticipation, to our 50th Anniversary celebration.

Having first opened our doors during the 1965-1966 school year, it is incredible to take a step back and see how far our school has come over the past half-century. Through our dedication to academic excellence, Jewish tradition and values, and community, we have established ourselves as one of the leading Jewish day schools in North America.

We take seriously our responsibility to educate the future leaders of the Jewish community and are confident that we will continue to evolve and change in order to best meet the needs of today’s students. With that in mind, we are thrilled to be a part of the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education’s (PEJE) Atidenu “our future” initiative which will provide us with targeted strategies to increase enrollment in our early childhood program.

This fall, we also have two other wonderful additions to our school: our newly-renovated Upper School Art room, dedicated in memory of Avi Svirsky z”l (Class of 2001), and a renovated and reinvisioned Bernard J. and Zelda Meislin Memorial Upper School Library in honor of Rabbi Joyce Raynor. Rabbi Raynor dedicated 30 years to Golda Och Academy, and for that we are all incredibly grateful. Having now completed our seamless transition of leadership, I am grateful to Joyce for her friendship and guidance throughout my years in the school and am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead this fine institution forward as we embark on the journey through our next 50 years.

From The Board Chair 50th Anniversary

I

t is my honor to write to you again as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Golda Och Academy. I am very proud to be your board representative to the broader Jewish community.

It has been my privilege to share so many milestone events with you this past year, including the Siddur Celebration, Chumash Celebration, Moving Up Ceremony, Back to School Nights, Senior Awards, Arts in Action Night, Graduation, Sports Awards Dinner, STEM Groundbreaking, Past Presidents Brunch, and the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. It is always a great feeling for me to attend these events and see the pride that our students demonstrate in themselves and each other. These events always display the warmth and nurturing atmosphere of our wonderful school. Â I want to thank you for the tremendous support you provide to the school. During the past year, we had approximately 525 donors to our annual Shomrei Torah campaign.

More than 280 people have contributed to the now completed Building on Tradition Campaign, and 300 guests attended this year’s Spring Gala. In addition, many people have contributed substantial amounts of time volunteering in various capacities for the school. All of this generosity helps make Golda Och Academy an outstanding educational institution. The entire board is very grateful for all of the support from our community of parents, grandparents, faculty and staff members, alumni and friends.

Your efforts make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students.

Golda Och Academy is a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ.

In spring, the Middle School Arts Department mounted a production of You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.

Following success in district and state competitions, including winning the first place trophy at the Math League Elementary School Competition in December, qualifying members of the Lower School Math League travelled to Houston to compete in the National Elementary Championship.

Teaching Excellence Grants 50th Anniversary

The 2015 Recipients of Grants Promoting Teaching Excellence The Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund The Peter J. Herzberg Memorial Grant Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Peter J. Herzberg z”l, a beloved past president of the school’s Board of Trustees. Herzberg recognized the important work of the Golda Och faculty and made its support a priority.

Golda Och Academy is grateful to his wife, Hon. Lisa Chrystal, and three children: Ben Herzberg (Class of 2006), Arielle Herzberg (Class of 2009) and Ilana Herzberg (Class of 2009), who have continued this important legacy. “The teachers grant fund is a fitting tribute to Peter, who is clearly missed every day,” said Lisa. “As president of the board of SSDS/GOA, his commitment to Jewish education was unwavering, and his support of teachers was legendary. This fund epitomizes what Peter valued. We are proud that his legacy lives on by GOA, continuing to provide excellent, innovative secular and Jewish education.”

The Fund for Faculty Innovation and Excellence The Fund for Faculty Innovation and Excellence, now offered for a third consecutive year, was created by GOA parents Elizabeth and Gerald Cohen to award teachers with unique and cutting-edge plans for the classroom and provide them with the resources to put their plans into action.

This year’s recipient, Upper School Judaics teacher Rabbi Shira Johnston, plans to create a new Vegetable and Flower Garden project with Middle School students. The garden will build on the sixth grade Teva experience and will be integrated into the environmental unit of the sixth grade Rabbinics curriculum. Additionally, the project will also further science and environmental studies lessons, teaching students how to test pH levels of the soil prior to planting along with educating them about water conservation, highlighting the inexpensive drip irrigation system originally developed in Israel.

Visions for the future

In honor of Rabbi Joyce Raynor’s retirement on June 30, 2015, more than $120,000 has been raised to date to renovate the Bernard J. and Zelda Meislin Memorial Library at the Eric F. Ross campus. Having served our school for the last 30 years as a teacher, principal and Head of School, the library project is a tribute to Rabbi Raynor’s dedication to Golda Och Academy and its students. Rabbi Raynor has developed our Israel programs into a national model of excellence and has grown our endowment from $3M to $47M, completing the Building on Tradition campaign to meet the $15M Och Match. She has made a tremendous impact on our school and on the day school field.

The redesigned library will feature a lounge area, collaborative work areas, charging stations, new computers and smart boards, flexible seating and presentation/meeting space. This fall, our Upper School students will enjoy a new, redesigned art room in memory of Avi Svirsky z”l, a gradName uate of the Class of 2001, and a beloved son, brother, grandson and friend who was taken_________________________ from us all too soon.

Born and raised in our community, Avi was truly a creative soul. Even from an early age, he was clearly an artist.

2014-15 School Year Highlights 50th Anniversary

In April, more than 200 bubbies and zaydes came for Grandparents Day on both campuses.

Gan students and their 5th grade buddies enjoyed a wonderful Seder.

In January, the Upper School’s computer lab was outfitted with 20 new Mac computers.

In the spirit of tikkun olam, middle schoolers participated in Community Service Day. From Jackie Robinson to Amelia Earhart, everyone enjoyed Biography Day at the Lower School in May.

Ninth graders left for Israel in November for Na’ale.

In February, 2nd graders performed beautifully at their Chumash Celebration.

2014-15 School Year Highlights 50th Anniversary

On May 29, students and faculty joined together for the 22nd annual Walk for Life.

The 9th annual Mission: New Orleans trip was held in December.

Senator Cory Booker had some fun with our 8th graders during their trip to Washington DC. In March, 7th graders held their Tzedakah Fair, learned about tzedakah in Jewish texts, and chose worthy nonprofits.

Records were set during the boys High School soccer season.

Our fifth graders moved up in June.

In May, Kitah Aleph did an amazing job at their Siddur Celebration.
