My Other Cars are Porsches...
I
t is amazing how quickly time flies. We just had an awesome event at the movies to see “The Art of Racing in the Rain”, organized by Jan Mackulak. She originally booked a 75 seat theater but we had to move to the 120 seat theater to accommodate the crowd. It was a great movie with some good racing scenes (and some clichés) but requiring a lot of tissues. I am impressed at how quickly Jan was able to get the word out through social media. Kudos to you for a job well done Jan! We are quickly approaching our busier season, although you might be hard pressed to notice the difference. Our autocross and DE events will be starting soon and we have two big events coming in November. Phoenix Flight 42 will be the first weekend in November and will be held at the Tumbleweed Park in Chandler where ALL cars will be able to park on grass! Our reception and banquet luncheon is planned to be at the Hilton Phoenix Chandler which is one of the closest places we could find and about 5 miles from the park. While much of the major stuff is organized we still need a chair for this event. Please consider volunteering! At the end of November, Sunday the 24th to be exact, we will hold a celebration of our 60th Anniversary as a Region. This will be a momentous event at the Phoenix Art Museum where they will be holding an exhibit called “Legends of Speed”. We have planned to accommodate a large number of our members and guests but don’t procrastinate on registering so we can plan accordingly. The registration should be up before the end of this month. We have booked a great speaker for the event: Lori Schutz, daughter of Peter Werner Schutz, who was President and CEO of Porsche AG from 1981-87 and was responsible for promoting the 911 and resurrecting racing by the factory. I have heard her speak and she gives a wonderful talk. Our event is so important, Zone 8 moved the Zone President’s meeting to accommodate us. Your Board has a number of new things planned. First, we voted to make name badges free so there is no reason not to order one from the Goodie Store. Second, there is interest in holding a rally and I am planning another off road tour for the 4 wheel drive Porsches. Keep an eye out for announcements in Rook’s email burst or on the website. ‘Nuff said. Drive safely!

AZPCA/SAR Mount Lemmon Drive and Lunch at Sawmill Run Saturday,September 28, 2019 We are having a Driving Tour/Lunch to Mount Lemmon in the Catalinas in Tucson with the SAR. This event was run several years ago and was enjoyed by all. Come out and enjoy the drive, the scenery, the lunch and mingling with the Southern Arizona Region members.
We will meet at the CVS parking lot in Mesa (on the northeast corner of Power Rd. and McDowell Rd.) at 7:00 a.m. After a 15 minute briefing we will depart at 7:15 a.m. sharp and take the 202 to 60, head eastbound and take 79 south through Florence to Tucson and meet the SAR group at 9:45 a.m. at the McDonald’s parking lot on the corner of East Tanque Verde and E Catalina Hwy. in Tucson. We will then drive as a group up Mount Lemmon. Full driving directions will be handed out at the briefing.
After an exhilarating drive to the top of Mount Lemmon, we have reservations at the Sawmill Run Restaurant. After lunch is finished you can explore Mount Lemmon for photos, hiking on the trails ,etc. Everyone is on their own after lunch is finished.

Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region 42nd Annual Concours d’Elegance November 1-2, 2019 Tumbleweed Park, Chandler, AZ The Board of Directors and leadership team of the AZPCA cordially invite you to participate in our 42nd Annual Concours d’Elegance, also known as Phoenix Flight 42, on November 1st and 2nd, 2019 at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler. Festivities commence on Friday evening, November 1st at the Hilton Phoenix Chandler, located at 2929 W Frye Rd. in Chandler. Looks like the Arizona Diamondbacks chances of making a wildcard spot this season is slim to nil. There’s always next year. The good news is autocross starts back up this month and there are more drives being planned. We have a great venue for our upcoming monthly member meeting at La Cucina Bistro. Unfortunately, Mark and I will miss it since we are heading out on our East Coast road trip. Lots of stops planned along the way to see family and friends, as we make our way to Cape Cod. This issue is full of great stories, articles and photos. Check out “Flagstaff Overnighter...” and Part 3 of “Women in Auto Racing”. Stay tuned for more information and details for Phoenix Flight 42 and our 60th Anniversary Gala events in November. Remember to check our AZ.PCA.ORG website for the most up to date information. On that note, kudos to Kevin Gilchrist, AZPCA Webmaster, for taking 3rd Place in PCA National’s website contest. The winner of the Writer’s Drawing for the September issue of Going Places is Jack Norwood for “Meet A Member”. He will receive a $30. credit on Motorsportreg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. Please keep those articles and photos coming my way. T
he AZPCA is made up of a wonderful group of members. As Going Places Editor, I would like to introduce featured members, Jack and Lynne Norwood. 1. When did you join PCA? We joined about 6 weeks ago (July) and are just now getting newsletters and seeing some events we would be interested in. 2. What Porsche(s) do you have? A 2017 Macan S that I have had for a couple of years, and a 2013 911S that I have just recently purchased. 3. Where are you from? My wife Lynne and I are from Colorado. We grew up in different parts of Denver and the suburbs, and our last residence was in Castle Rock, Colorado. 4. Family? Just me and my wife in Scottsdale. One son in Colorado and another in Hawaii. 5. Work background or trade? Work background is varied. Telephone company, Consulting, etc. I retired the first time at 49, became a consultant, went to work with Aon 4 years later and the retired from them after 8 years. 6. What makes your car special? What makes my car special. Macan S. It is a sports car that can do stuff other sports cars can’t (like carry things/people, etc). Fun to drive! The 911 is fun on steroids. Only problem is being able to drive it the way I want to and keep my license. I am looking into taking driving lessons and getting it on a track.
7. Next upgrade? I think two is enough. My Macan only has 20,000 miles and my 2013 911 only has 8,000 miles. That is not a typo - only 8K.. 8. Have you personalized your car? Have not personalized either car yet, but thinking about it. 9. Favorite memory with a car? Too many to mention, but I guess everybody goes back to their first. Mine was a 1956 Mercury, that I drove on bald tires (all I could afford) at very high speeds. Not sure if I have gotten smarter or not, because I probably would do it again. 10. Why did you buy your Porsche? I had a 65 Volkswagen Beetle and loved driving it, and always looked longingly at Porsche. The 65 Porsche was kinda like a Beetle on steroids, so I wanted one. Not sure if I would get an old Porsche again, as I had a 67 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII BJ8 which was the other car I loved. Problem is that it was more romantic than comfortable, especially in Arizona. That is one of the reason I got the 2013 911. It has the modern comforts, but does not feel like a Bentley. 11. High school nickname? No high school nickname. If I had one, I probably could not put it in print, so this is a good thing. 12. Top 3 dream cars you would own? I have 2 of them. I really do love the ones I have. Third car would be something off the wall, like a 72 Jeep CJ5 rebuilt, or an older Toyota Four Runner pickup - again rebuilt. Something I could knock around it. Problem is that every time I see a car, I would like to have it. I am not into Ferrari, or the exotics. Too expensive.

The Flagstaff Overnighter and Lowell Observatory by Bob and Cheryl Woodwell photos from SmugMug
W
hat do you get when you mix 22 Porsches and approximately 40 Porsche enthusiasts with the world-class Lowell Observatory? A group of educated Porsche enthusiasts who can’t wait to get back to the hotel for free drinks and food! This was the scene on Saturday, July 27 when the group drove to Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff from a starting point in Fountain Hills. We all enjoyed a relaxing drive in two groups watching the temperature drop from about 100 degrees (at 8 a.m. in the morning) to 80 degrees at 7,000 feet. Rook Younger, the tour organizer, and Ryan Hoadley each led a group of drivers to Flagstaff with a pit stop in Payson. Fortunately for Group 1, the trash truck we picked up as we left Payson turned off pretty quickly or we would have arrived in Flagstaff the next day. After checking in at the Drury Inn, many people ate lunch across the street at the 1899 Bar and Grill on the Northern Arizona Universitycampus.

Later that afternoon, everyone met at the observatory for a two hour, interesting presentation by Hogan, one of the observatory’s witty educators, with plenty of time left over for questions. Did you know that Flagstaff was chosen by Percival Lowell as the site for his observatory not only because it was high, but also because it had a post office with facilities for a telegraph, a train depot and a general store that sold fresh fruit? Percival was a textile magnate from Boston and wanted to ensure he could communicate back to Boston, could easily have supplies shipped to the observatory he was building and could obtain fresh fruit as he was very afraid of scurvy. The observatory was built in 1894 to first observe Mars. The finding of Mars “canals” originated at the Lowell Observatory when Percival saw the reflection of the veins in his eye in the telescope! It was not until 1930 that Pluto, whose discovery is what most of us think about when talking about the Lowell Observatory, was discovered. This discovery came well after the death of Percival in 1916. The day and the formal part of the trip ended back at the Drury Inn where the Porsche group joined others staying at the hotel for the 5:30 p.m. “Kickback” featuring free drinks and a filling and varied menu of penne pasta with sauce, chili, popcorn, chips and salsa, hot dogs and spring salad. Many, after this early evening social, headed into Flagstaff for a more formal dinner taking advantage of the many microbreweries within walking distance. All in all, everyone experienced a well-planned trip with scenic driving in cooler weather and learned about the history of the Lowell Observatory. The observatory is a Registered National Historic Landmark, an “Arizona Treasure” and one of “The World’s 100 Most Important Places” according to Time magazine. This is definitely a place in Arizona worth visiting.

Women in Auto Racing - Part 3
T
his is the last chapter of the stories about the resolute women driving in Formula One Grand Prix events. It wasn’t easy in a male oriented sporting business.
Desire Randall Wilson, daughter of a South African motorbike champion, was born November 26, 1953 in Johannesburg. She was one of the most talented and ferocious competitors in motor racing. In 1979, she was the first woman to lead an F1 race. She headed the field at Zolder in her Tyrrel 008 until she spun out on the wet track. Then in 1980, she was the only woman to win a post war F1 race at Brands Hatch driving a Wolf WR4. Too bad that it was in the short lived British Aurora F1 championships. It was run with Formula One cars but did not award points. Wilson began racing in South Africa, where she won the 1975 Formula Ford Championship. She and her husband Alan moved to England to continue her career, racing both open wheel and sports cars. Her career was so extensive and varied it is difficult to condense. She was licensed to drive in CART Indy cars, as well holding a FIA Super License allowing her to race Formula One World Championships. Wilson paired with Alain de Cadenet in 1980. They shared his own sports car the De Cadenet LM1. They took 3rd at the Brands Hatch 1000km, and won both the Monza1000km and the Silverstone 6 Hour.
Desire Wilson was a consummate driver having raced in over 100 different types of cars.
Probably Wilson’s biggest disappointment came at the 1980 British Grand Prix. She drove a Williams FW07 for the Brands Hatch Racing team but failed to qualify because of a poorly repaired chassis. This was her only official Grand Prix entry. In 1981, she drove a Tyrrell 010 to qualify 16th in the South African Grand Prix that was stripped of Championship status for political reasons. In 1982, she failed to qualify for the Indy 500 driving an 81 Eagle but also competed in 8 races in the CART Indy Series. That same year she finished 7th at LeMans in a Porsche 956. She placed 7th at the 1983 Le Mans with the Porsche 956 and took 4th at the 1984 Brands Hatch 1000km in a Porsche 956. Four years later she raced a Porsche 692C in Britain and Japan. Wilson’s racing resume has 12 pole positions, 24 wins, 16 second places, 43 third places, 28 fastest race laps and 17 track records. She has driven more than 120 different types of race cars on more than 98 race tracks in 17 different countries. She moved to the Salt Lake City where she became a U.S citizen. Her husband Alan Wilson is a well known race course designer. Giovanna Amati was born in Rome on June 20, 1959, to actress Anna Pancni and cinema chain owner Giovanni Amati. She was interested in racing at an early age. When she was 15 she bought a Honda motorcycle and hid it from her parents for two years. Amati attended a racing school before she began racing professionally in the 1981 Formula Abarth. She did well enough to progress up through Formula Three to Formula 3000 in 1987. In 1989, Amati was not successful when she ran Formula 3000 in Japan . She returned to Europe the next year to race with several different teams with little success. The Brabham Team was on the decline in 1992, when they decided a female driver would bring them some attention. They had Amati drive a Brabham BT60Y but she had little experience in F1. At the South African Grand Prix she was unable to qualify because she spun six times during practice. She also didn’t qualify at the Mexican and Brazilian Grand Prix. Soon after the last race she was replaced by Damon Hill. Over the next seven years she did very well in sports cars. In 1993, she went into the | 22 |
Porsche Super Cup to win the Women’s European Championship. Later on she raced Ferraris, Alfa Romeos, and BMW M3s. By 1999, Amati had moved on to media; writing for Italian motorsport publications and doing television commentary.
The Brabham BT60Y was not competitive and was difficult for Amati to drive.
But there is an interesting back story about Giovanna Amati when she was 18 years old... According to Wikipedia, “She had been kidnapped for ransom on February 12, 1978, by three gangsters in a group led by Jean Daniel Nieto… Amati had been taken out of a car she was sitting in near her parent’s villa and was taken away in a van. Her captors took her into a house located near to her parent’s home but moved her when police came searching… She was kept in a wooden cage for 75 days and physically and mentally abused but Nieto comforted her. Amati was released on a 800 million lira ($933,000 in 1978) ransom on April 27th, using box office receipts from the film Star Wars and her mother sold some of her jewelry and managed to get into her servants’ life savings to pay the ransom…
Nieto, a French citizen, was later arrested after meeting with the former kidnapped (girl)… Newspapers published stories detailing the strong emotional ties between Nieto and Amati. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison. PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro,- The Golden Years PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro,- The Golden Years, by Leonardo Acerbi, published: January 29, 2019, by Giorgio Nada Editore Srl, Milan, Italy.

his book provides text in both English and Italian. The pictures are, of course, a ‘universal language’, in which this book is well spoken. Missing from the sub-title are the words “of Racing”. There is very little in this book about production capability and output, design efforts, or corporate organization. To paraphrase – it’s not the business, its the [racing] cars. It must also be said that the ‘Golden Years’ seem to be the air-cooled/Ferry era at Porsche, but the six chapters (of eight) within that time period, provide an extensive report of Porsche racing history.. The first chapter covers background material from the years 1875 through 1930, including a fairly intensive treatment of the Porsche family, with many pictures new to this reviewer . The 1928-1949 chapter provides a more extensive treatment of Dr. Porsche’s WWII projects, than do most books about Porsches, stating that “Ferdinand [Porsche] and his staff also inevitably became “official suppliers of tanks”... to the Third Reich. Also clearly indicated is that Jean-Pierre Peugeot personally instigated Dr. Porsche’s imprisonment in France, after British tribunals had acquitted him of any complicity in the war. Truly a treasure trove for fans of air-cooled Porsche racers. Even without the textual sections, this would be a great pictorial history of Porsche racing, from driving an Austro-Daimler to victory in 1910 to producing the GT1 that won Le Mans in 1998. Printed on heavyweight, semi-gloss paper, the resolution of some of the more modern photos is outstanding, as is that of factory cutaway graphics The textual sections provide a fast paced narrative – there are no tables, graphs or charts to upset the flow. PORSCHE Gli anni d’oro is hardbound, with 320, 11-3/4 x 11 inch heavyweight, semi-gloss pages, containing many b-w and color photos, but no index. AZPCA’s Night at the Ballpark

O
n Saturday, August 3, 2019, thirty two enthusiastic AZ and SAR PCA Diamondback fans from the Phoenix and Tucson areas attended the game between the home town favorite Arizona Diamondbacks and the visiting Washington Nationals. It was a typical hot 114 degree Arizona day for the 8th annual gathering of Arizona PCA members for an exciting day at the ballpark. Sitting in Section 208 just above first base afforded everyone an excellent view of the action at home plate and first base. This game had an interesting giveaway, a haboob globe. The haboob globe represents a dust storm over Chase Field in a glass ball. Upon entering the stadium the first 20,000 fans were given a coupon to receive a haboob globe upon exiting the stadium at the end of the game. This was quite convenient as the globes were slightly heavy and made of glass. Aside from the personal convenience of not having to carry the globes all during the game, this process kept broken glass out of the stadium in the event they were dropped and also eliminated the possibility of the globes being purposely thrown during the game by exuberant fans. Since the giveaway had a weather theme, so did the ceremonial first pitches. Weather forecasters from each of the Phoenix TV stations wore Diamondback jerseys with their TV channel number on the back. The dozen weather forecasters threw out first pitches mostly simultaneously to a dozen Arizona Diamondback players acting as catchers. We watched an exciting offensive game as the Arizona Diamondbacks provided five separate home runs to beat the Washington Nationals 18-7. Stephen Strasburg, the pitcher for the Washington Nationals had a seven game winning streak coming into this game along with leading the National League in victories (14-5) and had not given up a home run in forty three innings since June 21, 2019, but he was no match for the excellent hitting of the Diamondbacks. By the seventh inning the Washington Nationals decided not to use up any other of their pitchers and two position players were substituted for pitchers. Our tickets included $10 D’bucks in which Arizona PCA members could splurge by spending on items for sale in the park. While some attendees used their D’bucks to purchase T-shirts others splurged by getting great ball park food items. We all had a great time and are looking forward to next year’s outing.

The Garage Project - Part 2
I
was smart for a change. Figuring the project would take at least a day to complete, I took a few extra days off around Memorial Day. After the garage was done, I’d spend the rest of the weekend admiring my handiwork and floating in the pool, enjoying tasty malted beverages.
By Sunday night I was gassed. So, Mrs. Turner propped me up in a comfy chair, put a neat bourbon in my hand and started the Monaco Grand Prix, which we’d taped earlier. I was exhausted and did not move all day Monday. And for the most part, I was mostly finished painting.
(Sound of hysterical laughter) Yo, Rob! Like this is going to be easy? Have you seen the size of this garage? It’s large! Not to mention the ceiling needs to be painted too. Yeah. Maybe I took a damn big bite of something that had ‘Beast’ written all over it. I spent one whole day doing prep work; taping and laying paper. Then I spent a whole ten to fifteen minutes figuring out how the Wagner Power Sprayer worked. In retrospect, I should have spent maybe thirty to forty minutes with it before trying to paint on an actual wall. The first results were – well let’s just say they kinda sucked.
Tuesday dawned bright and early as I had to head out of town for a business trip. Opening the garage door, I marveled at my paint work. It didn’t look too bad. There was only one largish section I’d missed on the ceiling. Maybe nobody would notice it. Until a random stranger passing in his car stopped, got out of his car, walked all the way uphill to the top of my driveway, pointed to my ceiling and said, “Missed a spot.” Oh well, Wagner Power Sprayer, fine paint mist and paint splatter be damned, I won’t be painting any more. I shooed the guy away and closed the garage door. The Wagner has seen the last of me.
Side note: I have a car friend who says I should not be allowed anywhere near paint. A few years ago, I had a project to paint my tire trailer the same color, Slate Gray Metallic, as my 968. The results were lousy; lots of over spray and paint runs along every surface. I thought it looked OK, but my friend, gasping for air in between fits of laughter said, “Rob, you’re the worst painter in the world!” Geez man, you hurt my feeling. Hey, I’m painting a garage wall white, what could go wrong?
And on that exhaust note, see you all next time.
As it turns out, a lot. The Wagner Power Sprayer was hard to use. I discovered you had to hold it in a special way or it clogged easily. How do I know this? Copious amounts of white paint splattering me and every surface not covered with paper. I walked upstairs and my wife burst out laughing. This was going to be a long weekend. So, I compromised and started bringing the tasty malted beverages down to the garage to get me though this project. Lots of cold tasty malted beverages.

I’d do a whole section of wall and then take a break. I made pretty good progress and got most of the walls completed by Saturday evening. Sunday I’d do the stairs leading to the house (after having removed the ugly carpet) and the ceiling. A hitch developed. Since the Wagner put out a fine mist of paint in the air around it, everything not covered in the garage ended up with a light coating of paint on it. Me included. I’d worn breathing protection, but it wasn’t enough as I felt like I had to hack up half a lung at the end of each day. The stairs were particularly challenging as they are narrow with no ventilation. They were also the most faded area in the entire garage and needed two coats. I think I breathed in one coat and I do not want to talk about what happened when I blew my nose…
