From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

Spring always brings a sense of freshness and sharpens our points of view towards people and the places that we live, play and relax. We have met so many unique, warm and friendly people through AZPCA, and find that the theme of “Not just the cars – the people” is reality if you attend the monthly meetings and events that interest you, say hello to someone new and stay open to new experiences. We have seen new faces showing up at our events, and meetings, and are very encouraged that the welcoming spirit of AZPCA is alive and well.

For example, this month we launch Kimberly’s Korner, which is a column written by a new member that we met at a recent monthly meeting who was on their own, but had such an interest in being part of the club. We took a few extra moments to learn about Kimberly, and quickly came to find out how passionate she is about conducting research. And voila – Kimberly’s Korner was born! We hope you find this new addition to our newsletter as delightful as we found Kimberly to be and seek her out at the next member ’s meeting. Her 1st Porsche story is very heartwarming!

Where are we without our friends and family? We would like to honor the friends we have made through this club and ask that everyone considers checking in with your friends and family. A text or a short call or even email can mean the absolute difference in someone’s day, and the energy of a kind thought reminds us of who we are, and what is truly meaningful.

March brings a lot of new growth to all of the elements, and we are looking forward to meeting more new members, and current members at our upcoming events!

“A hui hou:” “Until we meet again.”

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

Rise and Shine - A review of the PnP at Daddy-O’s

RISE & SHINE

--Destination Daddy O’s—

What a perfect morning to venture into Phoenix! Porsche club events, be it a monthly membership meeting, an amazing group drive, a special social event, or a delicious P & P breakfast...the word that always comes to mind is FRIENDSHIP.

Not only is it fun to catch up with members who you might not see often, but the breakfasts are always an opportunity to spend quality time discovering a variety of new people.

Daddy O’s definitely delivered on this possibility. Getting to know Kathy and Ted Vander Hoek, along with Nancy and Dennis Rood was quite enjoyable. Learning about family, homes (Both the Seattle area and Scottsdale for all of them) and simply experiencing their unique personalities was the highlight of my day. We had a great meal, and our server, Maya, was exceptional. If you ever find yourself there, please ask for her! I hope to see many of you at our next P & P breakfast, and if you dare, buddy up with a member that you don’t know and enjoy the experience of getting to know someone who may just end up being a good friend.

Dennis, thanks for planning this event!

Review - Driving Tour to Bagdad

Our group of approximately 50 Porsche driving enthusiasts gathered in North Phoenix ready to explore some of the best driving roads in Arizona.

As always, great conversations and appreciation of the impressive selection of Stuttgart’s finest that had been gathered. We admired early 911s, 993s, 997s, 991s, 992s, Speedsters, Spyders, Caymans, Macans, and more.

The leadership of Debbie and Rook was inspiring as usual and after the drivers’ meeting, including a nice number of new members introducing themselves, off we went. We passed the gigantic new $40B semiconductor facility and continuing onto the beautiful US 60, after successfully navigating the potholes around Wickenburg the real fun started on the smaller and windier roads towards Bagdad.

We all managed the confusing left turn onto AZ 97, a rollercoaster filled with sharp, blind, off camber, late apex, early apex, and everything in between, turns. Our leads did an excellent job of adjusting the flow of traffic in a safe but inspiring manner. And we got to drive the thing twice!

As our adrenaline levels started to approach normal, we arrived at the excellent Copper Country Bar and Grill in Bagdad, where we enjoyed great service and fantastic burgers, chicken sandwiches, and salads. Legend says the name Bagdad came from a father-son mining operation. The son would yell, "Bag, dad!" when he needed a new ore bag.

Janine, our lovely host and owner of the restaurant, gave us an introduction to Bagdad, which is home to the Freeport-McMoRan's copper mining operation, the world’s first commercial-scale concentrate leach processing facility (2003) and one of the longest continuously operating electrowinning plants in the world (1970). Bagdad, population 2,500, is located in a not so populated and mountainous desert area. All homes in Bagdad are owned by the mining company. Employees rent the homes and if they leave the company or retire, they have 90 days to get out of town. One can imagine the dramas that have unfolded over the years. There is a waiting list for homes with currently 136 entries.

After these and other facts about the town and the mining history, we continued our lively conversations and eventually headed back to the Phoenix area at our own pace to conclude yet another rewarding AZPCA event.

Future AZPCA Driving Tour - East Valley Tour

EAST VALLEY LOOP TOUR

Thursday, April 11, 2024, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Mid-week drive to avoid weekend Winkleman Loop traffic. There are many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60 in the East Valley. This year we are making the clockwise drive for the Winkleman Loop.

Our Tour will start in East Mesa. We will proceed East on Hwy. 60 to Speedway bio break, to AZ 70 to 77 South, continue South and East 177 North past the Ray Copper Mine to Superior AZ to the Silver King Smoke House for Lunch. Pay for your own lunch! Last year we avoided the stop in Superior due to an annual festival.

Side Note: An investor purchased and renovated The Hotel Magma. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and then later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. The town has been the site for many Hollywood movies and Television Westerns. In 1997 the thriller-drama U-Turn, directed by Oliver Stone and starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, and Nick Nolte. In 1977 scene from the Gauntlet filmed on Main St, starring Clint Eastwood and Sandra Locke.

MEETING LOCATION WILL BE LISTED ON MOTORSPORTREG WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE DRIVE

3 Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Porsche Owners

We all know that Porsche owners are the best looking, savviest, and most successful car owners around, right? Well, what if I told you there might be some surprising facts about Porsche owners when compared to other luxury car owners?

Here’s a quick comparison. Let me know at the next breakfast or dinner meeting if any of these surprised you.

Gender

Are luxury vehicles all owned by men? Um, yes and no.

Most (70%) Porsche car owners are male. This comes as no surprise, but it’s interesting to note that means 30%, or almost one-third, are female. The proportion is a little higher for Macan owners, of which 35% are female.

Nevertheless, Porsche does appeal more to men than women when compared to other luxury brands. Audi is 65% male, while BMW and Cadillac are just 60% male. On the other hand, Tesla is 57% male, and Lexus is the most egalitarian, with just 54% male. (Sorry, I don’t have gender statistics for the other luxury auto brands.)

Age

Although Porsche is actively marketing to the younger generation, the average age of the Porsche owner is 54. More than half of them are over 55. Only 12% are 18-34 (probably tech or crypto guys!)

This is younger than Cadillac owners (59) and about the same age as Maserati and Lexus owners. Other brands, such as BMW, Audi, and Bentley, are also in the same age bracket.

Younger car owners gravitate to Land Rover (average age of 50 Tesla (47). The youngest owners are Ferrari (45) and Lamborghini (35-50.)

Income

Porsche car owners earn more than almost all other luxury car owners. Their median household income is $300,000. The only car owners that earn more are 1) Rolls Royce, at $600,000, 2) Ferrari, at $500,000, and 3) Lamborghini, at $500,000.

That means Porsche owners out earn the other popular luxury brand owners. How much? Bentley owners earn $250,000, while Tesla is next at $166,000. Maserati owners earn $160,000; while Land Rover owners take home an average of $150,000.

All other luxury car owners earn $100,000 or less, including these brands: BMW, Lexus, Audi, and Cadillac. (Source: “Car Brand Demographics: 37 Brands Checked (Age, Income, Etc.), Motor and Wheels, October 23, 2023.

What fact surprised you the most?

AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.

Danielle’s Column - The Remainder Bin

So I was meandering through my local Barnes & Noble. I had already cruised through the car magazines, noting once again the amazing fact that Jolly Olde, a country the size of New York State, still dominates the car mag shelf space. I counted four Porsche-only monthly Brit titles. How can that be?

No matter. On to the remainder shelves. And there, amid the 50% off titles on the top ten killer submarines of the world, how to cook a souffle like Julia Child and gardening secrets of the pros … there it was … really? Could it be? Yes indeed! “The Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Book.”

I’m a big Jerry fan. Late night, when Stephen and Jimmy and Jimmy are on hiatus, I watch Seinfeld reruns. And they hold up. The puffy shirt, the bubble boy, yada-yada-yada, the soup Nazi, Festivus. They’re timeless. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

It also doesn’t hurt that we’re both from the same general neck of the woods, Lon Ghiland. Which the natives shorten to The Ghiland. You have to hit that G, hard. I even had a very distant brush with fame once – a guy I used to play golf with, whose business was drilling precise holes for elevator shafts, told me he once drilled shafts for Jerry’s converted car garage on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Yes, that’s right! Although I never got an invitation to see the result of his work.

At first, I thought the book was a joke. Because it reminded me immediately of one of my favorite bits on the series, Kramer’s coffee table book on coffee tables. But that’s another story. You see, I’ve seen every bite-size episode. I love it. The cars, the guests, the chatter, the revelations.

Of course, I’ve buried myself in the tome. And I’m proud to share some take-aways. Because God only knows how many copies of Comedians are out there, anywhere. Here’s just a scrape of crema from the surface of the cup.

Jerry wrote an introduction to the book. “What if I figured out a way to bring the viewer along on a bit of comedy hang time but mostly the jokes and whatever else has some thought value? I’m not much for podcasts. I think virtually everything could do with a good edit …. a beautifully put together stand-up set is …. ‘I have a lot of funny and interesting thoughts. Here’s the best ones.’”

The episode with President Obama; “We did the phone call first. The President was like ‘Yeah, come on over.’ After Obama hung up the phone, he said to the Secret Service agent who was in the office with him, ‘He’s going to knock on the window. Don’t shoot him.’”

On relationships. Jerry to Bill Burr; “If I could give you three words of marriage advice? I’m married 14 years.” All right. “Never stop apologizing.”

| 38 |

More on relationships. Jerry to Ali Wentworth; “I’ll tell you, your husband (George Stephanopoulos) has got one of the greatest husband lines I’ve ever heard. ‘So you’ve moved to this new place on 72nd. Are you happy there? And he says I hope we are.’”

On TV and movies. Mel Brooks; “It’s got to please you. You’re the only audience. If it pleases you, it will please them. If you don’t laugh, they’re not going to laugh. If you don’t cry, they’re not going to cry.”

On other comedians. Jay Leno; “When you’re hot, whatever you do: ‘Oh, ho, ho.’ People laugh at everything you do. Then after they’ve seen you a few times, it gets a little trickier. Taste is what’s left.”

More on other comedians. Jerry to Howard Stern; “Listen, a great stand-up is a victory over the self. And you are as great an example as exists. Your career is a victory over the self. The greatest obstacles are the self. It wasn’t the business. It wasn’t other people. It wasn’t relationships, your wife, whatever. None of that was the biggest obstacle. It was you. You conquered yourself.”

Still more on other comedians: Robert Klein to Jerry about Rodney Dangerfield; “We’d hang around.” Where? “His place, first on 86th (In accent) I’ll tell ya, I got an apartment on 86th , between Columbus and Puerto Rico. I got mugged there. The guy had a razor. It was an electric razor. It was my own fault. I was standing close to an outlet.”

Back to Jerry’s intro, on the cars; “… if you’re not an automotive enthusiast, cars are an unbelievably boring subject …. How a person could not be interested in cars, I’ll never understand. They’re such large, important, fascinating objects …. They’re su ch a perfect fit with the comedians and the coffee. The reason I love cars is each one’s personality always expresses a moment in mechanical history and culture …. Every car is so unique to me. And so much like a person. Always trying to please, so often failing….”

I hope you find your very own Getting Coffee Book. I’m keeping mine, piping hot, forever.

TechTime with Scott M - Porsche Turbocharging

Tech Tips

PORSCHE TURBOCHARGING

Porsche Turbo, a name that is famous for speed and power. Since 1975 no car company has been better at turbocharging production cars. Every Porsche fan should experience the feel of “warp speed” when the turbo hit full boost in a Porsche at least once.

So we know Turbos make cars faster. But how do they work, and why are they so popular, soon to be standard in the latest 911? A turbo uses the exhaust gases that are exiting the engine to spin a “pin wheel.” This wheel is connected by a shaft to another “pin wheel.” This second wheel pulls air in and forces it into the engine.

The more air that goes into an engine, the more power can be made. Some highly-tuned turbo Porsches can make 1,500 hp or more! Because the exhaust gasses are coming out of the engine, turbos are known for being a very efficient, almost free, way to make more power.

There are some down sides to turbo, the biggest being turbo lag. The exhaust wheel of the turbo needs to spin very fast to spin the intake wheel to compress air to make power. This doesn’t happen instantly as any driver of an early 911 turbo knows. This lag can make the car challenging to drive. Another big problem with turbos is detonation cause by over boost. The pressure of the air going into the engine is called boost. The more boost the more power the engine can make. It is very important that the amount of boost matches the amount of fuel going into the engine or the engine will run lean. When this happens the engine can be damaged very quickly! Turbochargers compress the air which causes it to become very hot. This is why every Porsche Turbo from 1978 on comes standard with an intercooler. The

pressurized air goes through the intercool that works much like radiator, using fins and the outside cooler air to lower the temp of the pressurized air.

Without a thing called a wastegate, a turbo would just spin faster and faster until the car was overboosted. A wastegate is a valve that opens in the exhaust before the turbo to let some of the exhaust gas escape keeping the turbo from spinning too fast.

Another important part to the turbocharger system is a recycle valve. When the turbo is on full boost it is moving a lot of air. When the driver of the car gets off the gas, the throttle plate closes quickly and all that air in the intake has nowhere to go. So the other valve opens and this pressured air is rerouted back through intake system before the turbo or to the atmosphere (import cars make a duck noise when this happens).

Porsche released the first turbocharged production car in 1975, known as the 930. This 911 turbo used a single turbocharger without an intercooler. It was a very fast car at the time but Porsche knew they could do more. So starting in 1978 the 930 was a larger engine with a single turbo and an intercooler standard. This same single turbo configuration continued until the 993 twin turbo. With the 993 turbo Porsche figured out that two smaller turbos could provide more air into the engine AND spin up faster without much of the turbo lag. With the 996 water cooled turbo they continued with the two turbo set up and added two intercoolers. The 997 turbo came out with a new turbos that use a computer-controlled vanes inside the turbo to help the turbo have less lag and make more power on the top end.

The newer Porsche turbos use very high efficient wheels that spin much faster than the earlier turbos. These have almost zero turbo lag and still can make huge power.

Driving a turbo Porsche (especially an older single turbo) takes some getting used to. You may have heard turbo charged Porsches referred to as “widow makers.” The main problem is how much non-liner power the engine makes. I remember on my 1979 930 that was modified, the engine made around 200 hp at 2,400rpms.

At 3,400 rpms the engine was making over 400hp! So I had to be ready for that power burst. Turbos also make a ton of torque which really causes the back end of the car to squat. When the driver gets off the throttle quickly the back end of the car pops back up and can lose traction. The only time my 930 spun on the track was when I lifted off the throttle. Today Porsche turbos are much better and delivering the power more smoothly. Older turbo charged cars can be upgraded to more efficient turbos that greatly reduce lag and make more power. I just put a set on my 996 Turbo and was shocked at the difference they made!

Turbochargers are going to be standard on the new 911. This is mostly for fuel efficiency. The engines can be smaller in size but make more hp. I am excited about this! The turbos that Porsche uses are so good you hardly know you are driving a turbocharged car at all. If you have any questions on turbos, or have ideas for future articles, please email me at scott@mcilvainmotors.com

January always kicks off the year with a number of great auctions from most of the major auction houses and it generally gives us a barometer as to what to expect for the remainder of the year. As it appears, the overall Porsche market seems to have stabilized with January’s sellthrough rate coming in at 68%, right in range of what we saw through the final quarter of 2023. We did, however, see a bump in dollar and unit volume as compared to last January with $44,026,566 sold from the 592 Porsches offered.

Of those 592 Porsche’s offered, collectors had the opportunity to complete the “holy trinity” of hypercars as we saw a number of 959 Komforts, Carrera GTs, and 918 Spyders throughout the month. Of the seven examples of Porsche’s hypercars offered, only three managed to find homes.

The 1987 959 Komfort offered at Mecum’s Kissimmee sale was a 15,000-mile example that hammered for $1,700,000, right on trend with other 959 sales we saw last year. On the other hand, the 2005 Carrera GT offered at Barrett-Jackson topped average sales prices selling for $1,700,000 as well. This was due to the car having just 3,500 miles and being finished in the rare, and much sought after, color combination of Fayence Yellow over Ascot Brown. The 918 Spyder, also auctioned by Barrett-Jackson, sold just below the market average at a final bid of $1,625,000. Failing to sell were two other Carrera GTs with high bids of $1,252,000 and $1,370,000 along with a 959 Komfort at $1,500,000 and a 918 Spyder at $1,650,000.

Also, at the top end of the market, we saw another sale of Porsche’s track-only 935/19, this time setting a new record at a final bid of $1,626,000. We also saw a 911 Reimagined by Singer return to the million-dollar club for the first time since August of last year, with a Namibia Yellow over Bone White leather example sporting an Ed Pink-built 4.0-liter hammering down at $1,025,000. But that wasn’t the most impressive modified Porsche on the market last month. That honor goes to a 1957 356A built by Rod Emory of Emory Motorsports. This Light Ivory over Green Vine leather “Emory Outlaw” features a 2.6-liter Emory-Rothsport “Outlaw-4” engine reported to produce 260 hp and sold at a final bid of $675,000.

The overall 356 market looked strong bringing in a total dollar volume just over $3m with a 75% sell-through rate. Aside from the Emory Outlaw, Speedsters and Cabriolets dominated the top 5 spots with a beautiful Black on Black matching-numbers 1958 356A Speedster selling for $315,000 followed by 1958 356A Cabriolet finished in Ruby Red with a Black hard top selling for $292,000. While the Speedster looked to be quite the deal, the Cabriolet sold well above comps thanks to its known history and great presentation at auction. Of the cars that failed to sell, I was surprised to see this 1962 356B Carrera 2 GS on the list. Having just been restored, it was in absolutely pristine condition and only showed a handful of miles on the odometer since restoration. It failed to sell at a final bid of $300,000, quite a ways off of what it would take to

| 56 | Stuttgart Market Letter

bring it home. The lack of interest was most likely due to the auction venue of choice and would most likely have brought all the money at a legacy auction or top online auction house.

Another surprise from January was the fact that 914/6s continued to struggle. Out of the five cars on offer, only two found new homes, both selling under the $100,000 mark at $90,000 and $80,000. Two other standard 914/6s failed to sell at final bids of $83,500 and $110,000, the latter of which should have taken the bid in this market. Also failing to sell was a 1971 914/6 built by Brumos racing in the ‘90s for a customer racing program in the HSR series. It failed to sell at a high bid of $110,000.

While 914/6s slid, one market that has been on fire over the last few months is the 993 Targa market with it’s pricing trend line almost pointing straight up. Prices have gone from an average of $90,000 at the beginning of last year to over $120,000 today with three examples selling for $115,000, $164,000, and an impressive $180,000, which set a new five-year record for the model. That 1996 993 Targa 6-speed was a special one though, as it was customized by Jason Castiota, famed automotive designer whose work includes the Ferrari 599, Maserati’s GranTurismo, and the one-off Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina. This one-of-a-king example was finished in a Dark Brown Metallic with a gold rear Targa badge, gold-colored brake calipers, a Turbo front bumper, and a split-grille rear decklid borrowed from a 993 Carrera 2S. On the inside, the car featured a custom handcrafted interior appointed with classic beige German square weave carpeting and a combination of chocolate brown and ivory leather upholstery. An absolutely stunning example for sure.

Based on January’s numbers, I’d say that the overall Porsche market has stabilized and expect to see it continue into the spring. Although some models appear to be softening, I think it's more a case of them coming back down to reality after the insanity we saw in 2022. Our next batch of major auctions aren’t until early March with the Amelia Island sales, so February will give us a good look at how the online auction houses are performing on their own. Until then.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

| 58 |

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

AZPCA Auto-X - February 17, 2024

“Today's course layout featured a couple of very fast sections that transitioned into decreasing radius turns. It was a course that favored the brave and you really needed to trust your racing line while staying on the throttle and the car's ability to hold it.

Yes, I kissed that cone before the final turn but it stayed in the box." Eric S.

A great description culled from a post by Eric, who had the top time for Porsches and also on street tires. Overall Top Time Of Day went to Bruce H in a Tesla on race tires (slicks). Congratulations to both of them!

Thanks to Bill P. for the course design and for helping us set up the course on Friday morning. We had another sold out event this month and the weather was Arizona perfect, cool enough to require layering in the morning and warming up to mid 70s by noon. A nice lunch was provided by Pat the Hot Dog Lady. We had about 8 first time Autocrossers, and judging by the smiles, comments and enthusiasm, I believe they will be returning next month.

As always, thanks to everyone who pitched in to help with stacking and picking up the cones, taking down the tables and chairs, putting the flags, fire extinguishers, timing display and stands in the cart, and storing everything in the AMP container. We need your continued support to keep these events successful. We hope to see everyone again next month on March 23.
