am sure that you are getting just as bored as I am about having to stay home, wear masks and avoid contact. Sadly, the infection rate is still on the rise. There have been over 3600 deaths in Arizona, the majority in Maricopa county. I have friends who did not believe the virus was serious and now they are in the hospital and I am praying for their recovery. Our health care workers have been getting better at preventing deaths but it is still a huge ordeal to survive this virus. Please use precautions and stay safe.

There is a website telling about the creation of the coronavirus prevention clinical trial network which will be used throughout the US and outside to run the different Phase 3 vaccine clinical trials in the immediate future. www.coronaviruspreventionnetwork.org Within the website, there is a “Registry” whereby volunteers interested in participating in these various Phase 3 clinical trials can provide their personal information and if selected, they will contact you on how to proceed to one of the clinical trial accruing sites. This website is also very informational about the ongoing efforts about generating vaccines to combat COVID-19. I hope you all consider being a volunteer if you have not been infected before.

The board has decided to postpone all social events until further notice but some driving events will continue following guidelines that meet state and PCA requirements to insure they are as safe as we can make them. Registration is online through Motorsportreg.com and waivers can be signed online with a new procedure, which will require you to take a picture of yourself with your phone as proof of signature. It’s easy and more efficient. Please check the website calendar for upcoming events.

I spent some time looking through the articles I wrote 13 years ago for Going Places. I saw that there was a CHAMP open wheel race in downtown Phoenix that year and a Grand Prix in San Diego. Sadly, these events are no longer, but Formula One has started again having held three races with no live spectators. Mercedes has dominated but some of the other teams, such as Red Bull, look good. I am hoping to see more competition in the future races. I hope to go to one of these events someday, when we are back to normal. Perhaps in Montreal!

Another thing I discovered was that in 1999, the Arizona Region challenged the Southern Arizona Region to a competition of the top 10 autocross times which was called the “Duel in the Desert”. SAR created a special trophy for this and the Arizona Region won the first battle. A second battle was proposed combining the top three concour scores and autocross scores at Cinco de Mayo and Phoenix Flight but I haven’t been able to determine if the event was ever held again and who has the trophy. If any of our members remember this and have an idea where the trophy is, perhaps we can renew the friendly competition.

ooks like our yellow flag in Arizona is back to red and additional events have been cancelled. Keep an eye on our calendar on the club website for up to the minute event information. Our membership monthly meetings are still being held on-line. Make sure to sign up.

In the meantime, I am watching as much baseball as I can, just in case they have to pull the plug on the season. Mark and I are continuing to practice social distancing and wearing masks in close areas. We are heading out on a road trip to some of the national parks and bringing along a supply of masks, sanitizer wipes and cleaning supplies too!

Hey folks! I can really use some articles for the newsletter. If you have an interesting road trip with your Porsche, buying your first Porsche, first experience at autocross/DE or a DIY car project you would like to share, please send me your article along with pictures. Who knows, you might even win the Writer’s Monthly Award!

As Going Places Editor, I would like to introduce featured members, Ron and Pam Evans.

1. When did you join PCA?

We joined last month (June 2020).

2. What Porsche(s) do you have?

1964 356c Outlaw by Patrick Motorsports and 2019 911 GT3RS

3. Where are you from?

My wife Pam is a native of Arizona, I am from Illinois originally but have been in Arizona for 40 years. Both sides of the family are in Arizona, except my farming family that still farms the same land 6 generations after it was homesteaded.

4. Family?

We have 2 kids and 7 grandkids from ages 2 to 20, all here in Phoenix.

5. Work background or trade?

We both have been in Healthcare (it is where we met) for 34 years as Respiratory Therapists and owned a Medical Supply and Sleep Testing business since 2006, and recently retired after the sale of our company.

6. What makes your car(s) special?

The outlaw was a 14 month build with 911 suspension, steering, brakes and a twin p, up 2.8 L with 270 hp at 6500 rpm still weighing 2000 pounds, the GT3RS is in Chalk, an unusual color and highly options.

7. Next upgrade?

Just finishing up a 73 custom Bronco using a 2019 Porsche Dark Blue as the color with a modern drivetrain from the new 2018 Mustang, AC, PS, PB, full leather interior and a 1000 hp 1967 custom Mustang.

8. Have you personalized your car?

The Outlaw is a full custom, the GT3RS we added leather diamond stitched seat inserts by Patrick Motorsports, as well as Fabspeed Carbon Fiber Exhaust Tips and gloss exposed Carbon Fiber fender and rear scoops, engine cover and hood ducts.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

As a 5 year old in 1972, living in a city of 500 people in Illinois farm country, my neighbor had 2 original Shelby Cobras and would give rides to all the kids in the neighborhood every Saturday. That experience is permanently etched in my memory.

10. Why did you buy your Porsche?

I have always enjoyed having cars that drove well, but were different and personalized. I have loved early 911 and outlaws for years but decided the 356 Outlaw would be the first build. For the GT3RS, obviously the handling and track capability.

11. High school nickname?

None.

Culinary Dropout: The Showcase Room at The Yard in Tempe 149 S Farmer Avenue Tempe, Arizona Attention all members! Join the fun at New Members’ Day to welcome and celebrate our new club members. This event is an opportunity for our members to meet the 2020 Board of Directors, the chairpersons, and other club members for a lunch-and-learn in The Showcase Room at The Yard in Tempe where you will enjoy a catered lunch and learn all about your club.

The program includes introduction of the 2020 Board of Directors and presentations from the club chairpersons about their areas of responsibility and club activities, as well as how to use the AZPCA website and sign up for exciting member events. After lunch there will be an opportunity to discuss individual topics one-on-one with board members and chairpersons.

Based on the success of our 2019 New Members’ Day, we are once again holding the 2020 event at The Showcase Room at Culinary Dropout in Tempe. Located in the heart of the The Yard at Farmer Arts District in Tempe. The Culinary Dropout serves classic meals done right. The Showcase Room features an inviting industrial atmosphere with original vaulted wood ceilings, a private bar and patio area. An assortment of menu items at food stations will be provided along with non-alcoholic beverages. A cash bar will also be available during the event.

The event will cost $15 per attendee, with the majority of the costs subsidized by the club. New members who have joined the club since our last New Members’ Day event will be provided a $15 credit to MotorsportReg.com valid until the end of 2020. BOTPA?

by Chas Wirken oes anyone else remember this acronym-named PCA Arizona Region award? What does BOTPA mean?

As I recall, the BOTPA award was presented annually to a club member in recognition of some misfortune. All in good fun, of course.

I received the pictured award plaque in 1976 at the club’s Christmas party. The fire truck symbolizes two Porsche-related fires that year.

The first fire was my 1965 356SC. It started in the engine compartment at the carburetor below the voltage regulator and turned the positive battery cable running through the center of the car under the carpet into a red-hot element. That fire “sparked” a restoration project.

The other fire was in the clubhouse of my condominium complex.

The club was enjoying a progressive dinner and I was hosting one of the dinner courses that evening. Unfortunately, the waitstaff included the fire department. Fortunately, no Porsches were damaged.

Perhaps someone can decode BOTPA. Does anyone have an archive of ancient Going Places issues from 1976?

Editor’s note: Our club historian, Loretta Aman, provided the answer to the acronym. The meaning is Back of the Pack Award.

It was also the name of the article written by Board member Hank Johnson every month.

NISSAN Z: 50 YEARS OF EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE

NISSAN Z: 50 YEARS OF EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE by Pete Evanow, is the Nissan-official chronicle of the Z’s history, from Datsun’s planning in the late 1960’s through the latest 50th anniversary 370Z.

ike Porsche, Nissan grew from a small design/ manufacturing firm to the giant it is today. Unlike Porsche, Nissan’s heritage is that of an agglomeration of many specialty companies merged over the years into an ever evolving corporate name. The change in nomenclature for the Z-Car from Datsun to Nissan is discussed but not dealt with in detail.

This book has an European look with lots of white space and comprehensive captions for the pictures. There are ten chapters, not clearly tied to model numbers, but covering the evolution of Dotson/ Dotsun/Nissan, and especially the growth of the Z-Car from the 240 to the 370. Companion vehicles from which components were ‘pirated’ are mentioned, as is the origin of the name “Fairlady” for early Datsun sports cars. Unsurprisingly, the early Zs are described as being somewhat parts-bin designed, just as the first Mustangs were full of Falcon parts, and the first 356s were largely built of VW Beetle parts.

NISSAN Z contains lots of non-technical information, but western minds may stumble a bit trying to read the names of the various Japanese engineers and executives involved in the design, development and marketing of the Z-Car. As with the 911, The ‘essence’ of the Z-Car remained unchanged as the car evolved, with many special models along the way, and it always had a six cylinder engine. Like the 911 the Z-Car had one individual closely associated with it throughout it’s life, but “Mr. K” was a Marketeer/ Administrator, not a designer like Ferry. Racing activities are mentioned, but unlike the case with Porsche, DatsunNissan racing is described as being done by others such as Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) and as being a marketing tool, not a showcase for engineering.

Appropriate to the nature of the Z-Car itself, this book focuses more on the configuration and appointments of the car than of the engineering. The author is Professor of Advertising and Public Relations at Cal State Fullerton, and the book seems to have a different feel from the average Porsche book; it’s somewhat like a ‘Wash and Shine’ as compared to a ‘Full’, Concours. That is not to say that the coverage is superficial: The book is very complete and detailed but has a non-technical focus.

There are some fascinating prototypes mentioned, with pictures showing a 904 lookalike part of the acquisition of Prince, a maneuver similar to Porsche’s acquisition of Reutter.

Also shown is Prototype 9, an open wheel all electric singleseater based on the look of the Mercedes W-125 Grand Prix cars of the late-1930s.

The main thread of the text is the chronology of Z-Car design and sales. There are however many ‘sidebars’, not identified in the Table of Contents, which provide interesting supplemental information of such topics as The Corporate Name, Paul Newman, Parker Advertising, VG and VQ Motors, Nissan’s Commitment to America, Peter Brock, etc. There is some discussion of the relocation of the North American operation from SoCal to Tennessee, and the extensive manufacturing operations there.

NISSAN Z is printed on heavyweight glossy paper with a very readable font and is very well illustrated with large pictures. There are some pictures of design studio activities but none of the factory or any illustrations of engineering details. It is hardcover, with 176, 9x11 inch pages and 200 illustrations. It should be available for $45.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuartoKnows.com
