ime just seems to fly and it is already time to do another article for our newsletter. The bad news is this is a lot of work! The good news is there is a lot to talk about.

Our region has an incredibly strong program of driving events, from Autocross to Driver’s Education to Tours. These are run by a great group of people who have worked hard to have safe and fun events. Our national organization, PCA, requires us to have reports done by a participant other than the organizers (you may get asked sometime). I get copies of all of these reports and from what I see, they are all excellently run. My thanks to all who make these events happen. If you have been hesitant to try one, please be assured that they are safe and fun so sign up and enjoy the fun.

Speaking of driving events, I am excited that our members have been suggesting new and novel events. We have had a request to have a Porsches and Pilots event to visit some local airports. This is in the works so stay tuned. My first attempt at an Off-road Tour for Cayennes and Macans appears to be well received with over a dozen registered vehicles by this date. I will count the vehicles carefully to insure we don’t lose any out in the boonies. I am preparing a list of tips and tricks to take our cars off-roading. There is a plethora of information in the web about this and I am trying to sift out the most important advice to insure we have a great event.

Our plans for the 60 th anniversary celebration of our Region are coming along very well. Although we were chartered in February 60 years ago, we won’t be celebrating this until November for an important reason.

I think you will be excited to hear what we have planned, and it will be a must event so we will try to avoid capping the attendance to accommodate as many of you as we can Stay tuned!

We are still seeking a site for this year’s Flight and are getting closer, but we may have to shift the date a bit. One of our major goals is to keep the event on grass, (not dirt like I accidentally did 10 years ago - I know all about reseeding now!).

By now our New Members event has happened and, unfortunately I couldn’t be there. I know the team organized a great event and those in attendance learned a lot about our events. Jen Bartling did an outstanding job. Thank you Jen! Drive safely.

In the beginning I looked around and, not finding the automobile of my dreams, decided to build it myself.

Off the Road Tour (for Cayennes and Macans – and other 4 wheel drive vehicles)

Saturday, April 20, 2019 9:00 a.m.

Join us in your 4 wheel drive Porsche for a short off road tour through Bulldog Canyon and the Usery Mountains. We will meet at the Cracker Barrel Store in Mesa Riverview Shopping Center and drive toward Saguaro Lake at 9:00 a.m.

The drive will be on unmaintained dirt roads and trails for about one hour through beautiful backcountry and should be manageable by everyone. It will end on Bush Highway where we will then travel to Saguaro Lake for lunch at the Saguaro Lake Marina Lakeshore Restaurant.

This will be a beginner’s tour to learn how to take your Cayenne or Macan (or any other four wheel drive vehicle) off road safely and to show you what it is capable of. Street tires will be fine but expect to get your car dirty! A short instruction on preparation will be provided to those who register for this event.

ALPINE TOUR XIX June 21-23, 2019

AZPCA will be holding its 19th annual to Alpine Tour.

Our drive up will be on U.S. Route 191,the Coronado Trail, which is 93 miles from Clifton to Alpine and it has been called one of the curviest roads in the United States. We start off at 3,000 ft. and climb to nearly 7,000 ft. We transition from desert to Alpine views. This is hands down the most involved drive you’ll find in Arizona.

Flagstaff Overnighter/Lowell Observatory July 27 - 28, 2019 - Saturday-Sunday It’s mid-summer, and it’s time to flee the hot desert and head to the cool temps of Northern Arizona. So we’ve planned an overnighter to Flagstaff, featuring a visit to the renowned Lowell Observatory.

We will take an indirect route to Flag, heading up the Beeline Highway and passing through Payson on our way up the Mogollon Rim. The Rim Country is always scenic and it’s a beautiful drive along Lake Mary Road toward Flagstaff. On our arrival we will check in at the Drury Inn & Suites, adjacent to the campus of Northern Arizona University.

After lunch we will head up Mars Hill overlooking the city, for a private group tour at the observatory. Several optional presentations are available after the tour, including viewing through the historic Clark 24,Refractor Telescope.

Sunday will be on your own to enjoy the many sites and activities offered in and around Flagstaff, or you may choose to take the scenic route through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona on your way back to the Valley.

The Lowell Observatory tour is limited to 50 people, so don’t hesitate -- reserve your spot early!

Thrill of a Lifetime!

Delivery at the Porsche Experience Center

I

t was a nice spring day in April 2018 when I scheduled a visit to my local dealer, Porsche of North Scottsdale for a service appointment for my 2016 Porsche Cayenne. I met with my service advisor to discuss the upcoming service to the vehicle and once done I had time to wander around the dealership to look at the various new vehicles in the showroom. While looking around I was met by Dave Soloto, the General Manager. I had previously discussed with Dave about purchasing a new 2019 GT3RS to replace the 2016 GT3RS that I currently own. The 2016 I purchased was the last 2016 they were allotted and it was too late to order it to my specifications, so I was not able to personalize it. Dave and I talked about the new cars and the 2019 GT3RS in particular, and he mentioned that if I was still interested, he had 10 GT3RS in their allotment and that I could have number four.

After a lot of discussions with my wife we decided to go for it.

So, on April 25th we placed the deposit. Dave and our salesman A.J. Anand said we had plenty of time to decide what options we would like on the car since the “vehicle fixed date” wasn’t until September 2018.

Needless to say, we immediately began the design of the car on PCNA’s website under vehicle build. This was a lot of fun as you can really fool around with the various options that are available. One thing that was not apparent, not all the options that can be added to a 911 are available to the GT3RS. Thankfully, this makes designing the car a little simpler. My main items of choice were a white car with the Weissach package, which consists of carbon fiber roof, hood and rear wing making the car a little unique. Next was the front axle lift, ceramic composite brakes, leather/Alcantara interior with deviated stitching and a few other items.

Once we completed the design, we took it to Porsche of Scottsdale and gave it to A. J. for submittal to Porsche. While there I asked if they could tell us what the colors were the other 9 cars. Upon learning there were 3 white cars I immediately changed mine to racing yellow. During our time there it was mentioned that it would be fun to pick up the car at the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, California. There is an additional cost and it depends upon the model of the Porsche.

We now began the wait, which seemed to take forever. Our build date was October 29, 2018, completion on November 5th, to the port of Emden, Germany on November 7th, sail from Emden on the Goodwood on November 23rd, arrive in Houston on December 13th, and to the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, California on February 8th, with our delivery scheduled for February 19th at noon.

Since we were picking the car up in Carson all the paperwork had to be completed two weeks prior to pick-up. This included payment, licensing, and insurance. | 20 |

All this was completed and on February 18th we began the drive to Carson, towing our trailer. Both my wife, Kerry, and I had some concerns regarding the weather because as we passed through Palm Springs, we encountered some snow showers and rain. We were worried If this kept up it would affect our delivery the next day. Luckily after spending the night in Carson we awoke to a nice sunny day, so at 11 am it was off to Porsche.

Upon arriving at the Experience Center, we met our four friends, Bill and Rebecca and Ben and Joanne who are PCA members from San Diego, whom we invited to see us receive our car and with Charles Turner, Porsche Delivery Specialist. Charles explained to us all what would be happening during our delivery.

Needless to say, everyone was excited.

We were taken upstairs to the five-star restaurant, 917, where we were treated to a fantastic lunch compliments of Porsche.

Once we completed lunch, Charles took us on a tour of the facility. Here Porsche maintains both factory race cars and privately-owned race cars that owners contract with them for maintenance. They do the pre-delivery work also on the two cars that are being delivered here each day. This facility has a dyno and other machines necessary to keep all these vehicles in top running order. Everything in the shop area is white (walls, floor, tool boxes, etc.). It is cleaner than anything I have ever seen. The lobby of the facility has about 12 Porsche cars on display, some belonging to Porsche and others are privately owned. During all this time we had not seen our car.

Once we were finished, we proceeded outside where the track, skid pad, kick plate, acceleration lane and the off-road course are located. Charles explained all this to us and then introduced us to Mike who would give us demo rides. Needless to say, our friends did not know they would be getting rides. We three guys loaded into a Panamera Turbo and the three gals into a Panamera Hybrid and headed to the acceleration course where Charles and Mike showed us how launch control works, and boy is it impressive. It is hard to believe how fast a 4000 pound car can accelerate. It was then onto the skid pad where they demonstrated both the understeer and oversteer characteristics of the Porsche on the wet polished concrete surface. Last was the kick plate,

where a hydraulically activated plate moves randomly right or left sending the car into a slide on a wet surface. The object is to steer out of the skid into a straight line. This was extremely hard as I couldn’t turn the wheel fast enough to counter act the spin. We then moved on to be passengers in a Cayenne on the hair raising offroad course. After this it was now time for Kerry and I to take our turns in their cars.

While our friends watched, Mike took me to a GT3 to do the skid pad and the kick plate exercises. We used a GT3 as it has more options than the RS for these exercises.

It was a real trip, the skid pad is the easier of the two as you can feel the skid coming and can anticipate it, while the kick plate is much harder as you do not know which way you are going to slide and trying to move your hands fast enough on the steering wheel to correct is difficult. Once we both had done this a few times it was onto the GT3RS for the track session. Both of us were really looking forward to this as we both had time trialed and club raced a modified 914 and been instructors when we were members of Golden Gate Region of PCA. Since we currently own a 2016 GT3RS but do not track it, we knew a little about how the car performs, but could not wait to see the difference between the two. I went first with Mike driving for three or four laps during which he explained how the car reacts,

and the explained the braking and acceleration points of the track. I started off very conservatively and gradually picked up speed. I was amazed right off with the RS, it is extremely stable and can accelerate like gang busters. The brakes on the RS are unbelievable in what they can do. On the track as you get to the corner you put the brakes on full bore, you don’t press lightly and then harder. They slow you down with no lockup every time with no fade. As to the acceleration, this car is extremely impressive.

There is no slippage of the tires or no sliding in the corners, this car is planted. Both of us, after our turns, were very impressed and happy to have chosen the RS for our car.

Last but not least was the delivery of our RS. This is done in a private room. Our car was under wraps as we entered and the TV monitor on the wall had a picture of our car welcoming not only our names, but also the names of our friends as well to the Porsche Experience Center. They slowly removed the car cover and both Kerry and I and our friends could not believe how good it looked. It was better than I could have imagined. Charles and Mike spent time explaining all the option we had ordered and everything about the car. They even had hors d’oeuvres and a bowl of M & M’s in yellow and black to match the car! I was presented with a star that I signed and placed on the wall. The star has my delivery number of 154 (my car is the 154th car delivered to PEC – LA), and matches a decal on the windshield with the 154 number.

All in all, we spent 6 hours at the Center having lunch, touring the Center, driving on the track, using the race simulators, demo rides and being presented with our new car. This was an experience we will never forget and one of the very best times I have had with Porsche during my 50 years with PCA. All of this excitement is available using their cars (718s to Turbos) for a charge depending on the vehicle you choose to anyone regardless of whether you are picking up a new vehicle or not.

AZPCA Member Repeats as Club Racing Champion photos by Jimmie Mitchell, Grand Prix Region

C

ongratulations are in order for Chas Wirken, our own AZPCA member. He won the 2018 West Coast PCA Club Racing Series in the GTD (Cayman GT4 Clubsport) class. The West Coast Series awards were presented at the Zone 8 banquet on January 20 2019 in Palm Springs. Chas attended the banquet to receive his award. It was a close contest because Chas finished 32 points ahead of the second place driver in the GTD class for Cayman GT4 Clubsport cars.

The West Coast Series is a PCA club racing points competition comprised of the all the PCA club races that occur on the west coast of the USA, including Auto Club Speedway, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Willow Springs, and Thunderhill. The drivers are primarily from Zones 6, 7, 8 and 9. The GTD class is for the 2016 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, a factory-built spec racecar.

He also led the national points ranking in GTD class, although a national champion is not recognized because the East Coast has its own Clubsport series. Rolling Passion

o, how are you with car magazines? I started with Road & Track and Car and Driver in ’63, ’64. They were my entrée to the great big car world outside my quaint suburban enclave. Magic places far across the sea, like Monaco, Spa, the Nurburgring. One could dream, and so I did. Every month.

drive my ’78 911 SC and I tell them less than 1,000 mi/yr., they’ve looked at me cross-eyed. And when I’ve explained that this pattern keeps things fresh, that each time I get in, it’s like a new experience, they’ve tended to gaze skyward and step back quickly.

But I’ve cut back some in recent years. First, because a lot of the car reviews I used to covet in the buff books I now get delivered to me for free, on-line. Also, because the content just gets too repetitive. I mean, how do you differentiate your new car unveil/ review from the competition when the competition was one car up on the same ride-drive intro?

But I make no apologies. And neither does Mr. Eason. What’s the secret to building a good fleet? “Passion,” he says. “You have to buy cars that you love, or you will end up hating them.”

I still get Excellence, of course. But I used to consume the Brit magazines devoted to Porsche as well. Now I confine my Brit Porsche reading to my occasional visits to Barnes & Noble, where I can thumb through by leaning against the magazine stand, as long as my feet hold up. And then put it back on the rack. My rule of thumb, so to speak, is to buy a magazine, but only under one condition. That I’m also buying something else. Like … a book. And the magazine is usually Classic Porsche.

But I do indulge every month in one Brit car magazine, Octane. I subscribe. I love the content. The scope. Is it a throw-back?

Yeah, well, sort of, I guess. But it’s more than that. I mean, after all, they review watches. Books. Each issue they update the reader on what’s new with each editor’s fleet … cars they actually own. And they have the best for-sale ads on the planet. An original Blower Bentley.

And reliability? Eason states “Reliability-wise, top of the tree is everything that is air-cooled followed by everything that is German. You learn that some reputations are undeserved.

E-types don’t overheat when they are well-maintained. German cars do rust. Italian cars can drive big mileages, and so on. Our Lamborghini Jalpa, which has the reputation of being rather temperamental, and which has never been restored, just keeps driving and driving….”

Eason adds “… it takes a car a couple of years to become reliable enough to continue on the fleet. Being home-built is not a recipe for reliability – the worst two cars I’ve had were Cobra kits. They were popular, too, which made things worse.”

The biggest mileage in a single day?

“At the very beginning of our company, I delivered our Lotus Seven to Nice airport. The renters arrived complete with helmets. The next day they called me from Lisbon in Portugal to tell me they had arrived and that the car was

How did he get started? “A friend borrowed Linda’s and my Lotus Seven S2 for his wedding anniversary and had a fantastic time, but still wouldn’t buy a classic afterwards. He said, ‘We don’t have space to park it, time to take care of it and the knowledge, but it was a great experience to have it for a weekend.’

That was the moment.”

And that’s where it got really interesting. They profile a firm called “Great Escape Cars” that rents classics to … people like you and me. For an hour, a day, a week, a month, or whatever.

They’re based in the South of France. Of course!

Customer favorites? “We are based on the French Riviera so glamour Is all. E-types, Mercedes 190 SL, Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, Jaguar XK120, Alfa Romeo Spider Giulietta – all go down well.”

I really like the founder’s approach. In an interview, Graham Eason says, “… an old-car equivalent of Hertz or Avis is a poor response to what customers actually want. So, I offer classic driving experiences rather than classic car hire. Driving an old car is a special experience, but the longer you spend in one, if you don’t drive one regularly, the more its foibles become apparent … so (our experiences) are built around the idea that the first 60 minutes in a classic car are the most thrilling. It’s affordable, too ….”

Gee, am I hearing exhaust notes? Or is it beginning to sound an awful lot like the car ads in the back of the regular Octane magazine? Only better. Because you get to actually drive the car, on real roads, in the real world … until the new wears off and you begin to feel like you’re just driving a car. And when that happens, you get to give it back and walk away. Or rent another interesting steed for an hour, a day … and give that back too.

Sounds like a winning formula to me. As another ex-pat Brit, Graham Parker, was wont to say, “Passion is no ordinary word.”

And neither is Octane. Or Graham Eason.

PORSCHE PUNDIT

O

ne of my favorite things to do on the web is to go into a car company’s web site, head straight to their configurator and build something. Sometimes it will be a stripper, just the basic car to see how cheap I can build it.

And more times than not, I go all in adding every option to see how far I can take it to the other extreme. I try different colors, different interiors, different wheels and I spare no expense on the performance options. If you are going to build something, you may as well go big. Right?

I love me some Porsches! Owned twelve of them (and counting). But you know what? I’ve never bought a new one.

The Turner master plan says I get to do that at some point in my short life on this revolving globe. Thinking back to the Brand Loyalty series I wrote a couple of month back, you know I’ve got to get my boys out of college, propped up and on their own. Could take years. It’s funny, I even remind them from time to time (like weekly), that they’re holding me back.

I am joking here, but just barely.

Point is, I love the Porsche configurator. I build cars on it all the time, like maybe 2-3 times per month. OK, maybe 3-4 times per month. But that’s all I’m admitting here. I build Carreras (mostly Turbos and GT3s), Boxsters, Caymans (especially Caymans; love them), Cayennes (just in case we end up needing a new one), Macans (because they are awesome), and Panameras (have you read my action-adventure novels?

They factor somewhat in the story line), and 918s (cause they are stupid crazy and it’s fun to see if you can configure one to $1,000,000—yes with reversed pinky held to mouth, Dr. Evil style).

The mouse hovers over the “get a quote from your dealer” button and as usual, I do not press it. But man, I wish I could.

I know that day will come, that perfect moment when I will be able to press that button and talk to the dealer, to build my dream Porsche. I can feel it coming in a three-to-four-yearoff kinda way. See I have infinite patience when it comes to waiting for my ultimate car. I’ve got to, I only get one shot.

Oh yeah—heard that one before. So then, what the heck, I’ll reconfigure the

ur annual New Members’ Day event was held on Saturday, March 23. It started about 10:00 a.m., with members arriving at the Culinary Dropout in Tempe (new venue for this event). We had 90 members registered, of which approximately 50% were new members.

Upon arrival members checked in with our Membership Chair, Richard Wyatt. We had a wonderful buffet brunch with salad, vegetables and southern fried chicken and biscuits and homemade cookies for desert. Great food and service!

Bob Woodwell, AZPCA past president, addressed the group and introduced the Board of Directors and announced each of the day’s presenters, who covered the club’s many activities.

Thanks to everyone who attended New Members’ Day. It was a huge success!

Taking a Great Newsletter Cover Worthy Photo!

Here are some tips: 1. Shoot your picture using vertical orientation.

Why? Vertical images are used for editorial and magazine covers where the format works beautifully with the vertical layout of media.

Think of an 8.5 x11 sheet of paper.

Vertical photographs are less common than horizontal photographs because they require the photographer to take the extra step of turning the camera sideways. Many photographers do not think to turn the camera sideways to take a vertical image.

2. Send your picture(s) in “Actual Size” attached to an email. The cover is a vertical of 8” x 10” or 4:5 ratio or 800w x 1000h pixels (or a little bigger). If you are pixel-illiterate, send a JPEG between 2MB and 10MB. I can do the resizing.

SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM The sponsorship programs were designed to allow our current and new advertisers and sponsors a simple way to choose a program that will include; digital on-line published newsletter and internet exposure opportunities all for one simple investment.

The sponsorship program has five tiers: Bronze - $250 includes one small website banner on the Events and Going Places digital magazine page of our website, rotating with other sponsors, and one eigthpage (3.5”x 2”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication.

Silver - $600 Includes one medium-sized website banner on the Events and Going Places digital magazine page of our website, rotating with other sponsors, and one quarter-page (3.5” x 4.75”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication.

Gold - $1200 Includes one medium-sized website ad on the main page of our website rotating with other sponsors, and one half-page (8” x 5”) color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication.

Titanium - $2500 Includes one large vertical ad on the front page of our website rotating with other sponsors and one full-page (8” x 10”)color or grayscale ad in the Going Places publication.

Platinum - $10,000. Includes one large vertical ad on the front page of our website, an embedded video, one full-color or grayscale, full-page (8” x 10”) ad inside the front cover in the Going Places publication.

It is the responsibility for each sponsor to develop and design their unique promotional ads. Sponsors must submit their own artwork electronically for ads in gif, pdf, jpeg or swf (for website ads) formats. New sponsorships will run yearly, and investment will be pro-rated for any new sponsor who commits mid-year. All website ads will be viewed only by Arizona Porsche Club members and therefore will not be accessed until the member logs into the website. The acceptance and display of advertising in this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the advertiser or product by the Porsche Club of America, Arizona Region. AZPCA reserves the right to refuse to print any ad it deems inappropriate. Sponsorships must be prepaid. Staff reserves the right to change rates upon notice at any time.
