PRESIDENT’S NOTE

Mark Manente

" The one rule of Italian driving..."

Whatsa behind me isa nota important- Franco Beltline (Raul Julia in "Gumball Rally)

What a March, so many great events, thanks to all the dedicated volunteers. Thank you: Dennis Rood, Bill Stubbs and all the volunteers that made the " All Porsche Grand Display" a spectacular success. Dennis will be heading north soon and Frank Grimmelmann will take over the Porsches n' Pancakes duties for the summer. Come on out it is only one Saturday a month.

Another great INDE weekend thanks Dan, Kellie and Khloe Bouet and the volunteers. Dan is invaluable as the club's Vice President. Mr. Kim Kemper and Rick Althouse maxed out another AutoX event. And great reporting by communications chair Kenny Mitchell.

Thanks to Angela Manente for organizing this year's New Members' Day at We -Ko-Pa.... "Non Posso vivere senza di te." And to all the Board and Chairpersons that contributed their time to welcoming our new members. Also, thanks to Lori DeCristo, our Zone 8 Rep, for making the one-day trip from California to attend our meeting and present AZPCA's 65 th Anniversary award. I will be bringing it to the next monthly meeting along with 65 th Anniversary decals. PCA sent us one for each primary member.

For those members who haven't heard, PCA dues will be increasing from $46.00 for one year to $56.00. This is PCA's first increase in 13 years. Renew your membership the digital way. It obviously saves PCA in additional costs. PCA had a very positive year and was able to send additional funds to the Regions based on each Regions primary membership number. AZPCA's membership numbers continue to grow each month.

As always check the website calendar often for all club events. I'm working to complete details for this year's Ken Steele Alpine Tour on June 28,29,30. Watch for it in upcoming Going Places and Website.

Make it a great month!

It's not just the cars it's the people

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

Who needs to watch NCAA when we have our own form of March Madness.

The month started out with Dennis’s very popular “All-Porsche Grand Display, this year we had a healthy turnout and a few new cars, turn to pages 28-29 for a little overview.

Next up was Jim & Carole’s Membership Meeting, this was held at a new venue for the Club, Benihana’s, the food was good and we had Jan Nyquist as our guest speaker, due to the noise levels however, members had a hard time hearing Jan, go to pages 36-41 to read his story.

Hot on the heels of that we had the HPDE INDE event which was a 3-day affair this year, by all accounts it looked like an amazing event, Dan Bouet, Kellie Bouet and all the volunteers made it a truly memorable outing, skip down to pages 74-78 for all the details, photos and a great article written by our own Goodies Store gal Jennifer Harrenstein.

Our annual New Members Day was held again this year at We-Ko-Pa, we had a really good turnout of new members which made for a very entertaining social event, check out Angela’s article on pages 30-31.

The following day Rook and Debbie Younger treated members to our very first New Members Driving Tour, the drive to Bartlett Lake was one the best in ages as Rook and Debbie added in a few surprises even for the seasoned AZPCA member, Rod Ladd has written an article and you can find that on pages 32-33, the food, by the way, was excellent, thanks to Brad and Melody Kircher and everyone at the Cove restaurant for serving a wonderful meal in an epic new setting overlooking the lake.

Not to be outdone, Mark Baker and Jeanne Snyder held their annual Casino Charity Event. This year, like in previous years, it was held at Alpio’s Troon location and was a fantastic event, from the decorations to the food to the people fun was had by all, a quick review is on page 34.

On the same day Kim and Rick ran another very successful Autocross event, the event attendance was, as usual, chock-a-block full, see pages 79-81 for all the action.

Sadly, the Porsche n’ Pancakes event happens after publication but The Thumb is always a favourite.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and Stay in-between the Lines.

Future Porsches n’ Pancakes - Schmooze

Schmooze in Scottsdale

June 22rd, 8-10AM

We will be sitting in the front garden. Maximum 45 [$30/person all-inclusive, including tip & only accepting online payments in advance]. NOTE TO ALL OF YOU, THE OWNER WILL BLOW IT OUT OF THE PARK THIS YEAR AND WILL BE HOLDING THE PRICE AGAIN THIS YEAR.

Chef Tony, the owner of Schmooze, in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale looks forward to welcoming AZPCA members back to another memorable brunch in his ‘Secret Garden” located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Tony was the former owner/operator of such Valley staples as Bravo! Bistro, Bravo! Pizzeria, and Naya Mediterranean Cuisine.

After studying food, beverage, and hotel management at the Culinary School of Jordan he continued his education at the Culinary of the Sorbonne, Paris. He began his career in 1980 as sous-chef for King Hussein at the Royal Palace of Jordan. He prepared many styles of cuisine for state dinners, where guests included dignitaries and leaders from around the world. In 1985, he moved to the United States and became an American citizen. He was the banquet chef at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in the mid to late '80s, then moved temporarily to Hawaii to open the Westin Maui Resort. Tony then served as General Manager of Tomaso's restaurant, opening Tomaso's concepts in Del Coronado and Phoenix, Arizona. In 1996 he opened Bravo! Bistro and has been a chef-owner since that time. His belief is that fresh, slow food prepared properly appeals to people who know and enjoy quality cuisine.

Schmooze is unlike any concept Tony has been a part of before. Schmooze opened in 2018 to be a where businesses could collaborate and “schmooze” with clients to seal the deal

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

| 18 |

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

Future AZPCA Driving Tour - East Valley Tour

EAST VALLEY LOOP TOUR

Thursday, April 11, 2024, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Mid-week drive to avoid weekend Winkleman Loop traffic. There are many great roads to explore North and South of Highway 60 in the East Valley. This year we are making the clockwise drive for the Winkleman Loop.

Our Tour will start in East Mesa. We will proceed East on Hwy. 60 to Speedway bio break, to AZ 70 to 77 South, continue South and East 177 North past the Ray Copper Mine to Superior AZ to the Silver King Smoke House for Lunch. Pay for your own lunch! Last year we avoided the stop in Superior due to an annual festival.

Side Note: An investor purchased and renovated The Hotel Magma. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and then later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. The town has been the site for many Hollywood movies and Television Westerns. In 1997 the thriller-drama U-Turn, directed by Oliver Stone and starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, and Nick Nolte. In 1977 scene from the Gauntlet filmed on Main St, starring Clint Eastwood and Sandra Locke.

MEETING LOCATION WILL BE LISTED ON MOTORSPORTREG WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE DRIVE

Overview - All Porsche Grand Display 2024

2nd Annual All Porsche Grand Display at Carefree Town Center on 3/3/24

The second Porsche Display show is in the books. Before the day of the show Bill Stubbs and I worked with Steve Prokopek, Development officer for Carefree, including attending a town council meeting where I gave a short presentation of how last year’s show went and what is shaping up for 2024. Steve spoke to the council in very positive terms about how smoothly the show went, how the Carefree merchants love the business we bring in and how we were good to work with. After Steve’s and my comments, the council then voted to close down the Ho Hum and Easy streets that day, which passed, so we were on our way.

There was a lot more work last year for Bill and me as it was the first time putting on this show and in this place. This year was easier because we had the experience of last year and also had purchased or made signs, shirts for the core team, donation buckets and other items we didn’t have to replace. Bill used last year’s art templates for handouts and the 2’ X 3’ sign boards Carefree lets us put out at town center. We just changed the dates.

Carefree town center is an ideal to have a car show like this one as 1., we have the support of the town council and staff, 2. They close the streets off for our cars, 3. They have a wonderful sound system that has large speakers to broadcast comments, give our awards and play jazz background music all day. They are very easy to work with and supportive.

We started loading in cars this year at 7:30 AM, ½ hour later than last year. Everything went smoothly and by 9:00 AM all the cars entered have been placed. We opened the show with the National Anthem and flag salute and announcements. Judging started for the various classes shortly thereafter. At 2:00 PM we began the award ceremony. Here are the winners.

First, we want to thank Steve Prokopek and the town council for their support in letting us have the show in the Town Center. Thanks for providing all the tables and chairs and sound system that we used and for blocking off the streets so we could have a safe show.

I want to particularly thank Bill Stubs, without whom we could not have put on this show. Bill has more energy than anyone I know (except maybe Gregg Bull). He prints all the hand outs and large signs. He posts our show on several Car Show Web sites. He gets the Porsche Pop Up Tents and coolers and takes them back. He arrives earlier than anyone by 6:00 AM and begins setting up the tents, tables and chairs and coolers. He also works the sound system to play our National Anthem, announcements and awards.

We also want to thank all of our Core Team who show up at 6:30 AM, got coffee and pastries, registered the entrants and handed out the new display stands for in front of the car, set up tables, chairs, manned the membership table and anything else needed and finally guided cars into our site to place them. Thanks to all the judges who judged the cars.

From the many nice comments, it seemed that everyone had a good time. It’s always great to see wonderful Porsches and spend time with Porsche People. Here are links to pictures by Rob Mains and Paul Hanson. Thank you, gentlemen.

Congratulations to all the winners and we hope we see you next year for the third All Porsche Grand Display in Carefree Town Center.

All the best,

If you have ever wondered where your fellow Arizona PCA Members reside, look no further than below.....

Thanks to Doug Buchanan we now have a very interesting map that shows, purely by numbers, where all our members live when they are in Arizona. The number that caught our eye was the 646 here in Scottsdale, I think we’ve met maybe 20.

Article - NEW Members Bartlett Lake Drive

Now when I think of something fun, a barrel full of monkeys comes to mind. I ask myself...self, what would be more fun than that? Why I know the answer, let’s get a group of Porsche enthusiasts together for a drive. Now our club has a wonderful mixture of personalities in it, and to make it more interesting an awesome mix of Porsches. Some are old, some are new, not sure if any are borrowed, but there are some that are blue.

When we moved to Cave Creek last year, my brother-in-law suggested to me that I join the Porsche Club. He told me it’s a great group of people and they get together for dinners and drives. Now at the time I had an older Porsche, a 1980 911 SC Targa that had belonged to my father. I enjoyed driving the car but wasn’t sure of its reliability. So, I took care of that problem, I bought my wife and I a 2017 911 Turbo Coupe. I joined the club, attended a fun breakfast at the Anthem Country Club and started meeting people, everyone encouraged me to sign up for a drive. They said, we have a lot of fun, oh yes and bring your wife along too. I told my wife about all the great people I’d met and about the drives, it sounds like fun she replied. Now you might have noticed I’ve used the word fun a few times, stay tuned, it gets better from here.

I imagined 50-60 Porsches all zooming down the highway, and of course doing the speed limit, husbands and wives and a few children too all driving together to a destination spot, now that sounds like good clean fun. Some people bring their dog along for a ride. There’s one couple, Frank and Maria, who bring their pet rabbit along. How fun is that. Now I have to tell you, the rides have a maximum capacity, so if you see one that sounds fun, sign up quickly, and if for some reason you can’t go let the organizer know so they can let someone else in.

There are always a couple of formalities, the signing of the waiver, agreeing to the rules of the club and then the drivers meeting hosted by Rook. He and his wife Debbie love putting these drives together. We all gather up and Rook goes over the rules of the road. Obey the speed limit he says, this isn’t a race. We keep up with traffic. When coming to a stop light split lanes to keep the group together, the best we can. Now printed driving directions are handed out with approximate mile/ odometer readings to give you an idea of where you should be at any given point. We are asked to turn our lights on for safety and remember this isn’t a race, the restaurant is not going to run out of food. Given the number of cars we usually split into 2 groups, today I think we had 32 so 16 and 16. There is a lead car and a sweep car for each group. We stagger leaving about 15 minutes apart. Sounds like fun, trust me, it is.

This morning, we gathered at the Coffee Plantation off Shea Blvd, we had time to socialize before gathering for the drivers meeting. The weather was a bit overcast with light rain earlier in the morning, that may have kept some people home, fearing their beloved Porsche may get wet, but not me, or the rest of the group, even Alpio’s wife Mary joined in the fun today. Now I’ve done a drive solo, but trust me, it’s more fun with a passenger to talk to and hold the driving directions.

| 32 |

Shelly and I were in the 1st group to leave. We drove down through some city streets and started our journey. Now when you get a bunch of Porsches all driving together, we tend to turn heads. A few people stare, a few people point as we drive by, we get the thumbs up signal quite often, it’s truly a lot of fun. The drive took us to Carefree where we had our 1st bio break. A few folks grabbed coffee, others used the facilities and a few just stretched our legs and talked. We drove to the entrance of the Boulders, then onto Legend Trail Pkwy, from there out to Bartlett dam road. The scenery was amazing, the sky was clearing up, traffic was light, it made for a fun drive. Now unfortunately for me, my copilot failed to alert me when to turn off to enjoy the 4 miles of twisty roads and therefore we arrived to the Cove restaurant a little before the rest of the group. There were 4 other Porsches that failed to make that turn as well so, we all got a good laugh over it. The lunch setting at the Cove restaurant was superb. We were greeted with a smile and sat ourselves out on the patio. The meal consisted of a very delicious oven roasted chicken with sauce, a delectable vegetable melody, yummy Caesar salad, sliced bread and herbed butter. There was soft serve ice cream for dessert.

To sum up the experience, a great day, good friends, and a beautiful setting. a whole lot of fun if you ask me.

Casino Charity Event - Don’t count your Chips, Donate them!

This year’s Casino Charity Event had a lot of competition due to Autocross earlier in the day and the previous weekend’s New Member activities but Mark and Jeanne managed to pull off a miracle and we ended up with close to 80 people enjoying the night.

We had Dr. Ken Snyder from St. Vincent de Paul on hand with his family and they watched in amazement at the generosity of the people in attendance as we managed to net a tidy sum of approximately $13,019.84 all of which goes to St. Vincent de Paul.

A huge thanks must go out to Rick & Linda Seagraves who won the split the pot prize and without hesitation donated the $430.00 back to charity, what a wonderful gesture. As usual this event would not be as successful as it is without the amazing generosity and support of Alpio and Mary Barbara, Terri, Beth, Todd and all the volunteers that made the night so eventful. Let’s hope we can break the 100 attendees mark next year.

We had a very appetizing Buffet Thanks to everyone that contributed

Worldly, Weathered and certainly WISE

Jan Nyquist

I was born and raised in Sweden, which is a country in northern Europe. Part of the country is above the arctic circle. Sweden is the third largest country in Western Europe after France and Spain. The country is about 1,000 miles long and narrow.

Scandinavia.

Scandinavia consists of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

Finland is excluded, because of a migration going west from present Mongolia landed the Finish Ugrian people in present Finland, Estonia and Hungary.

Their languages are part a group called Uralic Finno-Ugric.

In our English language we have four cases in the grammar, whereas their languages have 12-16 cases making their grammar and languages very different and difficult.

Swedes are usually very quiet, shy and introvert. Don’t talk much.

I had the intentions of telling a story about two lumberjacks being on their way to the workplace in the woods in northern Sweden during the winter.

Suddenly one of them fell on the icy path.

When he got up, he said: “It is very slippery!” They continued their walk.

Three days later the other one fell and while lying on the ground he said: “Yes, it is!”

Going back to the time periods of 800-1100 the population is Scandinavia lived along the coastlines in bays and fjords. Due to the summers being very short and lack of agricultural skills they lived from fishing and seafood. BAY is Scandinavia is called VIK. So consequently, people living in the bays were called VIKINGS.

The Norwegian Vikings sailed across the North Sea and invaded regions today called England, Scotland, Ireland and Iceland. These were not always friendly cruises from Norway. Many Vikings settled in these regions and there are still names and marks left behind from these times.

Story by Jan Nyquist
Photos by Jan Nyquist

During the 800’s there was a Viking in Iceland called Leif Eriksson, who continued his sailing with a few ships further west and this group of people landed on what was named NEW FOUND LAND, which presently part of Canada. That was the first visit from “Europe” to the “New World” long before Christopher Columbus landing on Bermuda year 1492. Columbus destination was India, so the locals he met were called Indios or Indians, which a mistake we still use when describing Native Americans.

The Danish Vikings sailed south and some landed on a peninsula in the present northwestern part of France. That peninsula got the name and label Normandie, the Country of the Norseman. One famous Norseman was William the Conqueror, who invaded England.

A neighboring peninsula south of Normandie got its name Bretagne or Brittany and there a large population from England living in this region going further east inland to include a little town called Chinon. Chinon has a castle from where English kings were ruling England. The English was considered an invading force into the Frankish Kingdom. If you take a close look at the Frankers that lived in this area and spell Frank with “C”, you can quickly see the origin of the country France, which in German is called Frankreich.

There was a young 17-year-old country girl named Joan, who visited the Frankish King and asked him to supply her with an army and she promised to drive away the English and stop their intentions to expand further east. She was given an army and demonstrated very successful military leadership skills and won the battle over the English. Sometime after this victory Joan was captured by some English friendly Burgundians (people from Burgundy) and they handed her over to the English, who punished her to death by burning her on a stake in 1431. That lead to the name Joan of Arc, or Jean d’Arc. In Chinon there is a statue of Jean d’Arc and the Catholic Church pronounced her a Saint.

The Swedish Vikings. North of present Stockholm there is a region called Roslagen, there used to be a Viking tribe residing in this area called Ross or Russ.

They sailed east with their ships into the today’s Finish Bay and some created settlement around the big lake of Ladoga. This region became known as the land of Russ or Russ or Russia, which became Russland. Russland is today the name for Russia in German.

The Viking ships had a flat bottom, which made it possible to move the ships between different rivers or water systems and it made it easier to approach beaches for a fast landing. They were pushing and rolling their ships on round logs between waterways.

GOING PLACES 04.2024 | 37 |

These Vikings were sailing down the rivers of Dnjepr, Djnester or Volga all the way down to the Black Sea and then across to reach Constantinople (today Istanbul), which was an important trading post between East and West. There were merchants from Egypt, North Africa and other Middle Eastern countries or regions that now traded with the Vikings.

On the way back up the river Djnester a group of Viking ships stopped and decided to settle on the banks of this river. That was the beginning of the city of Kiev. An interesting memory from this time is that the Ukraine’s national flag has the same blue and yellow colors as the Swedish flag.

Archeologists in Sweden have found coins and other memorabilia proving the exchange of trade in Constantinople.

When you begin school in Sweden at the age of 7 you begin studying the Swedish language and its grammar but also reading Norwegian and Danish literature.

After a few years in school three foreign languages are added to the curriculum, French, German and English, making it a total six languages.

After my Graduation from High School, I joined the Swedish Artillery to perform our mandatory military service. If you plan on continued academic education you serve in the military a little longer, because you are considered officer material. When I was serving, I was sent to study the Russian language.

After I had completed my military duty I studied at the University of Stockholm, business economics, sales and marketing, accounting and sociology.

When I had competed my studies I entertained the curiosity of East vs. West, Communism vs. Capitalism.

Since I had recently studied the Russian language, I applied for a job as tour conductor with tour operator owned by Scandinavian Airlines.

Nikita Khrushchev had opened the Iron Curtain for tourism in 1959 by having two Soviet embassies issue visas to the Soviet Union. That was the Soviet embassy in Stockholm, Sweden and the embassy in Vienna, Austria.

The initial contact with the spoken Russian language was difficult. I asked the Russians to speak slowly and spread out the words with space in between. It took me some time, but then I was very proud of my ability to understand what was said to me and the way I could respond and formulate my own sentences.

At first, I was based in Leningrad (today St Petersburg) and that was during the era of Leonid Brezhnev as the premier leader of the Soviet Union. In Leningrad I became very familiar with Russian concerts and operas which continued after had moved to Moscow, where the Bolshoi Theatre is a prominent component of the cultural life.

After a few months I was actually moved to Moscow, from where I conducted to tours to areas with in the union that were open for tourism, such as for example Kiev, Odessa, Sochi and Yalta.

| 38 |

When returning to Sweden after my time in the Soviet Union I now wanted to gain International Business Experience.

I sent my applications to several companies and had interviews. The interview that I selected to continue was the one with an Englishman named Colin Marshall, who had the task of building Avis International from an office in England.

I told him that my objective was to gain international business experience. He answered by explaining that since Avis is owned by IT&T (International Telephone & Telegraph) and if I work hard and produce results the opportunities will be there within that environment.

Within three years I was offered a position based at Avis International HQ in England, called Avis Management Services, Ltd. The function that I was assigned was Sales and Marketing within the Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The role also included expansion of the company into new markets and countries.

Colin Marshall was moved to Avis World Headquarters in New York and it didn’t take long before I got an exciting invitation from Colin Marshall to move to New York and have the same function, but now with a global scope.

Colin was aware of my father’s passing already in his 50’s and that made Colin move into my life as a fatherlike figure (mentor). Even after Colin left Avis and moved back to the UK, he stayed in touch with me. First, he worked for a British company called Sears, Ltd. (Not the US Sears Roebuck). Then he was recruited by British Airways and very soon he held the position as Chairman for BA. When I was visiting London on business, I used to contact Colin whose BA office was near Heathrow Airport. Sometimes he asked me who I was flying back to New York. Of course, I didn’t dare to have anything but a British Airways ticket. He asked to see my ticket while he made a couple of phone calls. He then handed me the ticket and told me that I am on the Concorde back home tonight. This happened actually several times.

When I joined Avis there were 19 operations outside the United States and most of those were in Europe. When I left Avis in the late 90’s Avis had operations in over 145 countries, so you can imagine the amount travelling I conducted during these years.

The more I travelled the more I realized how little I know. Before I visited any country, I tried to brief myself on what’s going on of importance in that country. What are the cultural and religious traditions etc.

After almost 30 years with Avis, I decided to leave.

In Florida there two gentlemen Wayne Huizenga and Steve Berrard that had started Blockbuster Video. They both were good visionaries and realized the Video entertainment had its insecure future, so they sold the Blockbuster Video to Viacom, Inc.

Now Wayne and Steve became cash rich so they decided to buy the larger and most prominent car dealerships in the USA. That became quickly the largest network of car dealers, but they were selling new and used cars, they were leasing cars, but they didn’t have car rental. They changed the name to Auto Nation. So now they acquired Alamo rent a car, National rent a car etc, so with my car rental background I was offered an international role in that car rental group, that was owned by Auto Nation.

When I had completed my task in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida I decided to move back to New York and begin employment with the Giant Insurance Company, AIG, INC, which at the time was under the leadership of Hank Maurice Greenberg. My position was within a division called AIU, American International Underwriters, that controlled some 500+ companies outside the USA. During my time at Avis, we were not successful in

GOING PLACES 04.2024 | 39 |

reaching an agreement in India, but AIG was successful in reaching a joint venture contract under Accident and Health with the large Indian company, the Tata Group.

As a matter of interest, The TATA GROUP bought recently the British prestigious automobile brand JAGUAR

AIG, Inc has an interesting history and background. There was a young man living in China who started an insurance company, AAU, American Asiatic Underwriters founded in Shanghai 1919. His name was Cornelius Starr. When the Cultural Revolution began in China 1966 Cornelius Starr moved the company’s headquarters to San Francisco. In 1968 C. Starr announced his retirement and was replaced by Hank Maurice Greenberg. Mr. Greenberg left AIG, INC. in 2008. So, AIG had only two top executives during a period of 89 years.

I FACED TERROR many times during my corporate years.

When I lived in Windsor, Berkshire, England, when I was on my way back to England from Italy in the afternoon December 27, 1985 from Fiumicino Airport, Rome, Italy. That terminal building has one section for Intercontinental departures and one for European flights. While I was waiting in line with British Airways machine guns were going off in the Intercontinental section of the terminal. An Arab Terror group attack killed 19 people an injured over 100.

A similar attack was coordinated only minutes apart at Vienna Airport, Austria where 2 people were killed 39 injured.

Then on Monday December 19th, 1988 I was flying from London Heathrow back to New York on Pan Am 103, which had a convenient departure time at 6:30 PM arriving at JFK Airport, NY @ 09:30 PM same evening.

On Wednesday December 21, 1988 on my way home from a company Christmas party I heard the news on the radio, that Pan Am 103 had disappeared from the radar over Lockerbie Scotland. 270 people died and 11 on the ground.

It was the very same aircraft that I had flown on Monday that now had bombs on board exploding. The bombs with timers had been loaded onboard the plane at Frankfurt Airport.

In the morning of September 11th, 2001 I discovered from my office window on the 14th floor in the AIG’s world headquarters in New York located in the Financial District of Manhattan, Wall Street and Pine Street that heavy smoke was coming out of the top floors of the World Trade Center.

I mentioned this to colleagues on the floor and we took the elevator down and ran up to Broadway, where we could see scary the devastation.

Then we saw the second plane hit the southern tower and an explosion with a huge ball of fire erupted. The two engines on the aircraft came through the building like projectiles and one landed on the roof of Deutsche Bank.

I lost many friends, who lived in Garden City, Long Island. Two young boys, classmates of my son Mattias from High School worked for Kanter Fitzgerald died at work that morning.

I called it quits from AIG.

A few years later in 2006 I left the East Coast and drove across the country and settled in Phoenix. I was blessed and very fortunate to meet my wife, Monyette.

In November this year we will have been married 14 years.

Unfortunately, during the past several years I have gone through seven major and invasive stomach surgeries. At two of those occasions the surgeons told me that they could not guarantee my survival.

Prior to a major surgery in November 2017, I had called Kim Kemper and Robert Tomlin and they both came to the hospital. Thank you KIM and Bob!! - I Was Scared!

Thanks to the skilled hands of the Doctors but more importantly Monyette’s hours and hours of long prayers enables me to tell you my story tonight.

4 Reasons Why Porsche Is the World’s Most Profitable Car Company

Did you know that Porsche is the most profitable luxury car maker in the world? Its success is driven by the profitability of its flagship model, the 911.

According to Bloomberg News, the 911 was the most profitable car in 2019.

But Porsche never rested on the success of this vehicle. Instead, it expanded its marketing strategy to capture other targeted segments such as sports utility vehicles, sedans, and electric vehicles. These offerings allow Porsche to expand its target audience beyond its typical demographic of successful, older men.

Here’s how Porsche very successfully used the following four P’s of marketing to accomplish this profitable strategy.

Product

In 2003, Porsche launched the Cayenne. It extended the 911’s race car engineering to a SUV. Its goal was to capture more women and family-oriented drivers. Twenty years later, the Cayenne is Porsche’s best-selling model.

In 2009, Porsche launched the Panamera. The company’s market research identified a need for a sporty four-door that drives like a sports car.

Positioning

Porsche positions itself as a well-engineered, luxury sports car, represented by the iconic 911. It extends the benefits of that strong position to

• Five sports cars: 911 Carrera, 911 Targa, 718 Cayman, 718 Boxster, and 718 Spyder.

• Two SUV’s: Cayenne and Macan.

• One sedan: Panamera

• Two EV models: the Taycan and the all-electric Macan.

Price

Porsche has two successful pricing strategies. The first one is based on time. Porsche introduces each product at the highest price the market will bear. Over time, it then gradually lowers the price of that model.

Each model can also be customized to appeal to different audiences and achieve different price points. For example, Porsche offers GTS or Turbo versions for more power and speed. It can also customize each vehicle with options such as child seats or premium audio.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

Promotion

Porsche's promotional strategy is underscored by the iconic Porsche 911, which is a powerful symbol of the brand's leadership in sports cars. It extends this leadership message through advertising, digital marketing, philanthropy, and lifestyle. Each channel reinforces a similar message to reach consumers in different ways.

For example, the director of Porsche’s social media emphasizes engagement with users on TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. It encourages followers to post pictures of their cars, and engage with comments, tags, and shares.

Its advertising messages have always emphasized the racing experience. As advertising agency Ryan C Walker said, “The best Porsche ads of all time are similar to their cars. Thoughtfully designed, well-executed masterpieces that have a tendency to stop you in your tracks.” The company is also not afraid to use humor in ads to get its point across.

Porsche encourages active involvement of its owners. It sponsors travel adventures, driving experience centers in Los Angeles, Birmingham, and Atlanta, as well as supporting Porsche clubs throughout the world.

Summary

Porsche brings the same sophistication, engineering, and drive toward excellence that it has in product development to its marketing campaigns. From product and positioning to price and promotion, Porsche’s marketing has made it the most profitable luxury car maker in the world.

BOOK REVIEWS FOR PORSCHEPHILES

BY BRUCE HERRINGTON, ORANGE COAST REGION

MAX The Dutch Master by Andre Hodgeboom, published February 2022 by Evro Publishing, Holwell, Dorset, UK.

There are a couple caveats to the significance of this book: It was written before the Verstappen's 2022 and 2023 Championships; it is an 'unauthorized biography'

None the less it presents, in a very readable fashion, a tremendous amount of background on who Max Verstappen is and where/how he came from. Written in an easy-to-read conversational style by a career motorsports journalist specializing in Formula 1, it covers a lot of information in a captivating fashion. There are some race reports included, but it is not a book about racing, it is about a person; it's about who 'MAX' is, and where/how he became an F1 racer. It turns out that he is no flash in the pan, he was very dedicated to the practice of racing from the age of 4 on. Max didn't just suddenly appear on an F1 podium; he spent years working hard to build his skills, driving thousands of miles in lesser cars. This book tells a lot about those miles, but not so much about those cars. Initially, he raced Karts, then lesser formula cars. He drove a few races in Formula 3 cars before jumping to F1 cars while he was still too young to be licensed to drive on public roads.

As a biography of Max Verstappen, it necessarily provides some biographical information about those who touched his life, especially his father, Jos Verstappen, a F1 racer from 1994 through 2003. He was also kart tuner extraordinaire for Max throughout his karting career. Also discussed at length are the influences of Dietrich Mateschitz, the power behind Red Bull, the beverage and the Red Bull and Toro Rosa racing teams. Helmut Marko 'advisor' to the Red Bull teams and the 'discoverer/advocate' for Max in F1. Paul Lemmens the owner of Europe's largest outdoor kart track, in Genk, Belgium, where generations of F1 drivers have trained or just driven for fun. Jackie Stewart the F1 racer and founder of the team that became Jaguar F1, that became Red Bull. David Coultard, Lewis Hamilton, and many historic F1 figures are discussed in this book, with the notable absence of Stirling Moss.

The book is basically chronological, but each of the 21 chapters is a stand-alone story about some aspect of MAX's life. They are all very readable and there always seems to be something new going on in the story. Many snapshot pictures illustrate the topics of the various chapters. There are lots of interesting tidbits that one would not expect – Max Verstappen's mother was a champion kart racer; his first open-wheel car race was in Florida; his first kart was a pedal car; the Netherlands's 'favorite son' was born in Belgium ….

The wealth of information contained in this book provides timely background to the 2024 Formula One championship now getting underway for what could be a very contentious season.

Hardbound with a photographic cover, there are 272, 6 x 9-1/2 inch matte pages. There is a detailed, 4-page, three column index, and 4 pages of 2015-2021 statistical data about MAX's racing experience. It should be available for $35.00 from your favorite bookseller, or from QuartoKnows.com.

Danielle’s Column - Push, Push, Push, Push, Push

Look at it this way. I watched all ten episodes of “Drive to Survive,” season six, so you don’t have to. You can thank me now, or thank me later.

Going in, the most salient question in my mind was, how the hell do they make what was a total romp by Max Verstappen and Red Bull into a compelling narrative. And the answer is, they didn’t.

For the reason why, let me just point out that Max was never interviewed, not once. Nor even Checo Perez. All you see or hear of Max is a few snippets, at driver gatherings. That’s it. And not even a glimpse of Helmut Marko. Nor Adrian Newey. Oh, you have Christian Horner, dishing pithy comments on his competitors, throughout. You know, how it’s a cutthroat sport, how you have to produce or you’re out, and so on, and so forth. We even eavesdrop on Horner at home, with Father Christmas greeting his kids, and the horses the Horners breed and race. And that was, shall we say, nice.

But, like, anything on Max and Red Bull’s domination? I’ll save you the trouble. There’s nothing. Until when, and I’m not kidding, near the very end of the final episode, Horner suddenly delivers a soliloquy on how Max won 19 races. “It’s outstanding, probably something I’ll never see again in my lifetime, in any of our lifetimes.”

And that’s it. How? Why? If season six was all you watched on the 2023 F1 season, you’ll never know in your lifetime, either.

I don’t get it. Someone please explain to me why, when faced with a boring, predictable, allconquering, take-no-prisoners season, the producers ignored the dominant team until the 11 th hour, how they shed no light on just how Red Bull does it, on what it actually takes.

Instead, we’re treated to the drama of backmarker teams, of Haas and Williams and Alpine and Alphatauri, doing their best to score points and move to the midfield, of McLaren and Mercedes doing their best to score points and move to the front, of Ferrari trying to be at the front. Some made it, some didn’t. And, again, that’s also nice.

It gets worse. No coverage of Austin, at all. Nor Brazil. A lot of fireworks, literally, in Las Vegas. This year’s narrative technique was to focus each episode on the challenge that team principals and drivers were facing, around a particular race weekend, mostly in no particular order. For example, we dive into Alpine. We watch Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasley fighting with each other. We see Otmar Szafnauer explain that he can “manage tricky drivers.” We see him summarily fired, mid-season.

We see the triumphant return of Daniel Ricciardo to Alphatauri, only to see him crash and injure his hand. We watch Lawrence Stroll strut his stuff as he promotes his son Lance, and promises to compete for podiums and wins with Aston Martin. At one point, Stroll figuratively waves his checkbook over the team.

| 52 |

Haven’t we seen this show before? More than once? Ok, here I go again … how about something, anything, on the mechanics? On their lives, what they’re paid? On just how to drive an F1 car? On how realistic an F1 simulator is? On the powertrains? On just what they’re talking about, when they talk about upgrades to the cars? On just what exactly goes on, during the course of a race weekend? On how the flying circus actually gets everything from track to track? On the performance envelope of a current F1 car?

And this list is just off the top of my head.

I must say, on “Drive,” you do hear a lot more of the radio chatter between team and driver than you hear on the F1 telecasts we get, live, from the UK. I got a kick out of the phrase “opportunity to overtake.” Duh. That’s exactly what several team radio operators say (they never do identify who’s doing the talking to the driver ….) when it’s clearly obvious that the driver can pass, if he can just do it.

And then there’s “push.” Perhaps the most used word each year in the series. And this year is no exception. I’ll save you the trouble, I counted how often it was used in season six. Wanna guess? And the answer is, 53 times. As if it was that simple.

I don’t think I’m giving anything away by telling you how “Drive” season six ends. I think I’m doing you a favor. After Horner’s out-of-the-blue praise of Max’s season, they cut to Guenther Steiner. He had been shown, repeatedly, heading to a private room to “call Gene,” to give Gene Hass, team owner, the bad news.

Steiner’s final comment; “We finished last, It was a @#*! catastrophe.” They fade to black, and up on the screen comes a title slide reading “Guenther’s contract was not renewed for next year.”

As I write this, Red Bull has continued to run away from the field, finishing one, two in both of the first two races of the 2024 season. Off-track, they’re in chaos. Horner’s embroiled in what sounds like a political blood bath on steroids. And, meanwhile, Lewis has announced he’s going to Ferrari after next season. How will “Drive” cover all this? Maybe I’ll watch to see what they do. Maybe I won’t.

COOLING SYSTEM UPDATES FOR THE TRACK

Now that we are right in the middle of DE/auto-x season there are a few things we can to do to keep the track safer and make our cars run better and last longer. In a previous article I outlined how the cooling system works in your car. In case you missed it, here is a quick refresher. Air-cooled Porsches are just that, air-cooled. They use a large fan that blows air over the engine, keeping temps down. They also use the engine oil to keep engine temps down with an oil cooler. Water-cooled Porsches use water that is pumped through the engine and two radiators to keep engine temps down.

One problem that is happening at the track and on the street has to do with water-cooled turbos (2001-2008) and all GT3/2s. These cars use an engine that is the evolution of the older air-cooled engine, called Mezger (named after the man who designed it) or GT1 block. However, because this engine was based off an air-cooled engine there are no provisions for water cooling in the block. So the engine was designed with water channels and hoses on the outside of the engine.

These water housings have a design flaw. The cooling fittings are glued into the housing. With the high cooling system pressures and heat from the engine the glue can fail, and the fitting, along with the cooling hose, pushes out of the housing and the car almost instantly loses massive amounts of coolant right next to the left rear tire!

This can cause the car to lose traction and the track will have very slippery coolant for other cars behind to drive through— scary!

There are three ways that these cooling fittings can be secured. They can be pinned, welded, or threaded. Most shops, including my own, pin the fittings to the housing so they cannot push out. To do this repair the engine is removed from the car and the top of the engine mostly disassembled.

Then the cooling housings are removed along with the hoses. A specialsized hole is carefully drilled through the housing and then tapped. A special screw is then inserted into the hole, effectively pinning the fitting and housing together so the fitting cannot push out.

The fittings can be VERY carefully welded to the housing, making sure there are ZERO leaks, but you must be a very talented welder for this. The

| 64 | TechTime with Scott M - Cooling System Updates

third way is to thread the housings and have fittings that are designed to screw into the housings. My opinion is that this is overkill and very costly. Once the fittings are taken care of the GT1 Porsche engine is pretty much bullet-proof!

A good upgrade to Porsche sports cars that did not come with three radiators is the addition of a center radiator kit. If you have a base sports car that has PDK a center radiator is a really good idea because of how much heat the PDK transmission makes. The good news about this kit is that Porsche sports cars were all designed to use a center radiator, so install and fit and finish is great.

If your Porsche is a Boxster (1997-2008) or 911 (1999-2008) a lowtemperature thermostat is a good idea. An engine thermostat controls the temperature at which the engine runs. A low temp t-stat is fully open at 71 degrees C where the stock t-stat is 83 degrees C.

For all water-cooled Porsches that are tracked, adding a bottle of Water Wetter is not a bad idea, especially if you are only using distilled water in the cooling system. Water Wetter is an additive that can lower coolant temp 20 degrees. It does this by reducing bubbles or water vapor that form on hot metal surfaces.

For all cars the best and easiest thing you can do is make sure that the front radiators are clean with no debris blocking air flow. Keeping your engine cool will give more life whether for the street or the track. If you have any questions about this article or if you have ideas (please!!!) for future articles email me at scott@mcilvainmotors.com.

The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He later left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. This 930 led Scott to a major career change with PORSCHE. As one of twelve students accepted to the prestigious PORSCHE PTAP program after two years of general automotive study, Scott went on to complete six months of the most intensive and detailed PORSCHE hands-on training available in the U.S. After graduating with top of the class honors, Scott returned back to the Phoenix Arizona where he worked at a well-known PORSCHE independent repair facility. Scott then took a great opportunity at one of the best PORSCHE custom-build racecar and service centers in the world. Here, Scott was the head late model technician, sales manager and head driving instructor. Deciding that Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa and the other valley cities needed an affordable late model PORSCHE service center, Scott opened Mcilvain Motors

February’s Porsche market appeared in line with last month as our sell-through rate stayed at 68% for the second month in a row, but with both unit volume and dollar volume topping last February thanks in part to day one of the Amelia auctions falling on the 29th of the month. Take out the Amelia sales, though, and our dollar volume fell significantly from the previous year to a total of $27,750,297 compared to $33,572,283 in 2023 with unit volume staying relatively the same. That large gap was influenced by the lack of $500k+ cars offered last month.

Our only million-dollar sale was a 2005 Carrera GT finished in GT Silver Metallic over an Ascot Brown leather interior with 7,000 miles on the odometer. Recent comps have sold in the $1.3-1.4m range, so why did this one appear to be below market? The fact that this car was missing its luggage set and showed no sign of a recent major service are most likely what kept bidders at bay. The only other car that had the potential to cross the $1m mark was a 1994 911 Turbo S 3.6 ‘Package’ car that failed to sell at a final bid of $990,000. With only seventeen units produced, ‘Package’ cars sport the normal 911 front end as opposed to the Slant Nose that the rest of the world Turbo S’ received. Questions about paintwork and lack of service history kept bids below $1m, where they should have been.

The GT market had a strong month with forty -two cars on offer selling at a 69% sell-through rate and bringing in an impressive $5.8m. 992 GT3s have settled at an average of $260,000 while we saw one 992 GT3 RS bring $400,000, which is the lowest price paid at auction so far here in the US. Every 718 Cayman GT4 found a new home with an average price of $117,000, right in line with the six -month average.

When it comes to Turbos, the 993 Turbo market has kept on climbing with an average price last month of $258,000 thanks to a Polar Silver example with only 2,300 miles hammering at a very impressive $471,050. 964 Turbos didn’t see much action last month with only one out of the two examples on offer finding a home. But the biggest surprise in the Turbo market was the 14% sell -through rate for 992 Turbos. It looks like it’s time for sellers to start adjusting their expectations and let these cars go for what they are actually worth.

| 70 | Stuttgart Market Letter

Mixed results were had at the 356 end of the market as we saw a very impressive result for a 1958 Emory Special Roadster that sold for an eye-watering $802,000. Starting life as a Coupe, this 356 was converted into a Speedster-look by an earlier owner before Rod Emory, of Emory Motorsports, got ahold of it and added a 550 Spyder-inspired nose and a 2.6-liter flat-four designed by Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport Racing. There are plenty of custom 356s that hit the auction block with average prices just shy of $250,000. But an Emory build is not your average build, with the top two custom 356 sales of the last five years being Emory Outlaws. Aside from the Emory car, most other 356s seemed to be soft with a sell-through rate below 50% and prices below averages other than a 1955 Pre-A Speedster that hit right on the average at a final bid of $365,000.

My biggest question leading into March is: will we finally see the return of a seasonal market as we’ve lacked the swings post the 2020 run-up? March is also the month of Amelia Island, but this year we also have RM Sotheby’s down in Miami for their Moda event. For Florida auction coverage, take a look at the Porsche Club of America’s YouTube channel where I covered some of the most impressive sales, and no sales, with Vu. Until next month.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

| 72 |

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

AZPCA HPDE - Friends, Family and Fun Cars!

READINGS FROM THE RACETRACK

With personal records beat, interesting weather, unusual lap experiences, and an outstanding dinner hosted by two members of the track, this INDE weekend rated among the most remarkable ever.

Our Porsche Club has all manner of Porsche owners—everyday drivers who love the general look and solid feel, others who bought into it because of the quick response and agility that only German engineering could manufacture. Those owners want to master their car’s nimble qualities and participate in AutoX classes our Club offers, focusing on controlled turning and braking. Then there are those owners that are all about experiencing the power and speed these cars were created to provide.

They are the race track drivers.

Heretofore thought only available to the nouveau-riche (remember Dudley Moore in the 80’s flick “Arthur,”), now through safely orchestrated weekends at AMP, INDE, Podium Club and other tracks in our Region, members/players get to drive their cars the way they want to drive them, the way this marque LIKES to be driven.

Haven’t you ever felt like risking a ticket on a stretch of road “just this once…” and powering up for a hot half mile? You are most welcome in this crowd.

While socializing between track sessions, I spoke with numerous participants—why they were there, why this location, what got them started, how they entered this sport. Here and now I apologize for any misinformation, such was my cryptic notetaking during these interviews.

Frontliner Ealing Jahn of Phoenix with his modified 718GTS 4.5 got his start with track driving in 2015 through his gym instructor who encouraged him to try high performance driving. Ealing is now one of several contenders for top track speeds, and enjoys INDE regularly. Easy to talk to, he’s one of the instructors at these events.

Roger Ayers, 81 years old, is a recognized face and name throughout various car clubs in our region. He attends events all over, mostly spending time in BMW’s (due to being stationed in Germany at one point), and now drives a track Mini Cooper S. He got his start in 1998 because his car salesman was a HPDE instructor. Becoming an instructor himself, he does it for “the big smiles it puts on his students’ faces.” Many people at the track acknowledged association with this lifetime enthusiast.

John Brooks is a DE-3 Driver, at INDE for the first time. He started with AZPCA first doing club driving tours, then tried AMP, which many people do out of desire to REALLY get to know their cars’ (and their own) abilities, and then decided to try HPDE. He remarks that our Club “plays it safe,” a huge factor in his interest. He appreciates getting lots of track time.

Nirain D'Souza is a driving instructor with many clubs including NASA and Gridlife. This was his first time at INDE. Uniquely, his interest was cultivated by watching YouTube videos about track life.

Kai Gerkey – GT4 Group of cars starting their warmup lap. Joe Bank – 997 GT3RS Giving a track experience ride along.

AZPCA HPDE - Friends, Family and Fun Cars!

A number of Southern AZ Region PCA members came to the weekend. Kai Gerkey is a PCA member for over 40 years, having also belonged to the Warbonnet Region now based in Oklahoma. He drove over from Deming, NM and periodically drives with SAR. Similar to Kai, other SAR members Crystal Menefee and Rick enjoy INDE and consider it their home track. They started track driving with muscle cars in the 1960’s, getting a 62 Porsche in the 70’s and now drive a GTS 4.0. In 2001, they first started with what the Club now calls a “Track Experience.” Another SAR member, Mike Schunk, came by “just to see what it was all about.” He used to track with motorcycles.

Long-time participant and 18-year driving instructor Rich Andrade is a fan of 928’s, owner of his for 24 years. He got his start in other clubs like ProAuto and NASA (National Auto Sports Association) but linked himself to PCA due to its safety standards. Our Club is known for stringent attention to the well-being of drivers. Fresh off the track, I caught one of his students. At INDE for the first time this weekend and who drove from Rio Verde to get here, he applauded his DE-1 experience as “FANTASTIC!”

Also, there for the first time, Arturo Fierro shared he got his start at age 15 with a 1973 Mustang. He was involved with Venezuela ATV racing, motocross, and now his son is in Supercross.

Scott O’Connor began his Porsche immersion when he bought his wife a Macan. He remembers thinking, “wow, these cars are NICE.” Good looking, good handling. Hooked, he bought himself a 911, a Boxter, a GT4, learned how to use them through AutoX and ultimately became a member at INDE, which includes unfettered access to the track.

Words about this track—time and again, drivers like Ignacio Villarmarzo who drove here from Texas for his 6th INDE weekend and Mike Iversen from San Diego with his 2018 Cayman stressed how they love this track for its diversity. Many tracks are relatively flat. This one’s got hills and scurves, blind corners and unique camber challenges. Not only that, but the staff at the track are extraordinarily helpful. Mike had to have his brakes bled after a session and was welcomed in the INDE garage where they perform all sorts of adjustments on track cars, all focused on keeping everyone safe.

Mike ’s friend Pete Weiss says INDE is “a great way to do FUN.” He runs his 996 GT3 and has been doing this for 15 years, with Audi’s and Porsches, working his way up to DE-4 certification. Both of them participated in “24 Hour Lemons,” a California event that sounds like what it is. Fun. They both applaud Dan Bouet and the AZPCA volunteers for a great organizing effort.

Speaking of volunteers Mark Costa was a first-time volunteer who drove up from Bisbee. Originally from upstate New York, he believes “to learn about something is by volunteering for it.” I concur with him, having my own beginnings in this aspect of the Club by attending AMP (Arizona Motorsports Park in Surprise) track days. Minus the interesting weather challenges, I enjoy camping on the premises. Extraordinary sunsets, and I love that Porsche noise. As a bonus, INDE member and instructor Chris Lesadd continued my sporadic track education (last lesson April 2023)

by taking me out for a few laps in his “in between” bulky 911 to a real race car. Yikes. It was ripping incredible. Crytal Menefee & Rick watching cars line up at grid. Michael Corvin, Jeremy Winkelman, & Rich Andrade Scott O’Conner & Dan Bouet talk about the best tires to use.

AZPCA HPDE - Friends, Family and Fun Cars!

Our Club’s track weekends find their success through volunteers, and longtime volunteers Karen and Bob of Surprise are familiar faces “in the grid.” They were very involved with track volunteering in California, first learning about handling the different colored track flags at Long Beach Grand Prix and are now key people in conducting safety checks on everyone’s cars in the opening hours of the weekend as well as throughout the event. Karen has an embroidery business and adds custom details to many driver’s gear. They started with a petrol blue 924 and now run around in a stunning meridian metallic 911.

Dan and Kellie Bouet, the lead organizers of these events, reiterate the value of volunteers. When he first started in this sport, Dan made the concise decision to “run it,” and got familiar with National PCA’s safety rules and regs for track days. He is now well-versed in all things track, brought in a lot of the rental equipment like helmets, transponders, tents, com systems and is most happy now that he’s got a group of regular people helping him so he now has time to dedicate to driving, not just standing on the sidelines. In fact, he received the top time trials speed this weekend. If it were not for the pair of them and their much-adored daughter Khloe, much of the fun all of us enjoy would not be happening. Many interviewees shared this opinion.

Others who arrived for the weekend get their fun in the social aspect, like Mirna and Linzui V who drove up from El Paso. They consider track days as “getaways,” getting to spend time with the kids and bringing their pets. Many wives and non-driving friends like Debbie and Rook Younger, Lucy Fisher and Kris Reid found warm comfort in motorhomes, empty car haulers, track casitas and personal INDE garages where snacks and chatting was the rule for the day.

A particularly nice evening was hosted by Ineke Cadora and Phil Hale, a couple who owns a trackside condo. They hosted/toasted the Club with a sumptuous and hearty buffet dinner, complete with all manner of entrees, salads, charcuterie, desserts and drinks. Outside in front were a collection of highly unique cars. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed these hours to socialize and meet new friends.

Conclusion: Once again, the weekend of track driving at INDE proved extraordinary. Safe, fast, educational in ways beyond any classroom, it produced a very happy group of 50+ drivers with the need for speed.

AZPCA Auto-X - March 23, 2024

This month’s autocross was another sold out event that featured an interesting course with two loops, Congratulations to Jonathan and Ealing for Top Times of Day.

Thanks to Bill, Jim, and Chris for helping us set up the course on Friday morning.

We were treated to the USAF Thunderbirds practicing for their show for Luke Days on Saturday. Weather conditions were perfect on Saturday, warm but with a cloud cover and no wind until the afternoon. As an added bonus, the air show provided us with a magnificent display of a variety of amazing aircraft.

Thanks to everyone who helped clean up and put away the equipment, we need and appreciate your continued support to keep these events successful.

We hope to see everyone again next month on April 27 for the last event of the Spring Season.
