Guides from Bedfordshire have travelled the world taking in oppotunities to visit Jamborees, help with projects, camp, meet local people and have adventures...

In PERU they Delivered a Peer Education camp for girls aged 12-16 delivering some sessions from the ‘Think Resilient’ programme and giving the girls an opportunity to deliver their own Peer Education sessions. Then for leaders in Tacna a range of communication and leadership skills sessions. But it wasn't all work there was plenty of time for seeing the sights, enjoying the local cuisine and having fun In THAILAND they attended the Everything is Possible Jamboree joining Guides and Scouts from around the world for a week of adventure. Staying in Bangkok there was time to visit the beach, take part in lots of camp activities and have fun with fellow campmates from across the globe.

In MEXICO They visited Our Cabana to join in the 60-year Birthday celebrations. Our Cabaña is one of WAGGGS' five World Centres and is located in the "City of Eternal Spring", Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Along with having lots of fun and visiting local sights, churches and markets there was time to make crafts and play games with local children.

In JAMAICA they worked in the Jamaican National Children's Home re-decorating many of the rooms but there was time to relax and visit waterfalls and plantations, take in a boat trip and visit Bob Marley's house.

In FRANCE they had a fantastic time climbing the Eiffel Tower, taking a boat trip along the Seine and visiting Sacre Coeur. But no trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to Disneyland!

In ROMANIA they Ran a week-long Summer School for disadvantaged children, playing games, making bracelets, arts, crafts and much more. There was sightseeing in Bucharest and time to relax by the beach in Constanta

and In CANADA they had an amazing time at the Spirit Of Adventure Rendezvous (SOAR), which is held every three years in British Columbia. The camp is attended by over 2,000 girls and leaders from British Columbia and across the world. The camp, set near Hudson Bay Mountain, had loads of fun activities including sightseeing trips, canoeing down part of the Bulkley river and live music. Then it was off to Vancouver for more adventures.

From 18 to 80 you’re never too old to volunteer as a Bedfordshire Girlguide Leader...

November saw the annual, Valuing our Volunteers Awards Ceremony, held at the Millhouse Hotel & Restaurant, Sharnbrook, Bedford.

This year the Awards were in a number of categories, from 5 years’ service to an outstanding 60 years service.

Valerie Cousins from the Dunstable Division receives her 60 years service award.

The ladies honoured have, between them, given over 1000 years of volunteering, to work with girls and young women from all across Bedfordshire.

Sandra Cove a leader in Kempston received her award for 50 years service and Valerie Cousins from the Dunstable Division her 60 years service award, an exceptional achievement.

Georgina Barrett received her Queens Guide Award and Sue Champkins from the Luton Division her Laurel Award in recognition of her outstanding service to Guiding.

Valerie said, ‘Girlguiding has become part of my life, being a member of the Guiding movement has given me so much over the past 60 years, fun, friendship, and adventure '. Valerie added, 'I am now very much looking forward to the next 60!'

This year, for the first time in over a decade, Girlguiding Bedfordshire can boast a membership of over 5,000 across the region.

Amanda Buckmaster and Gillian Conlan both from Woburn Trefoil Guild collect their Voyager Awards from Jan Griffin, Trefoil Guild Chairman.

County Commissioner Ann Crome said, 'We are delighted that so many girls and young women are joining Girlguiding Bedfordshire. It is a testament to our Leaders and Volunteers that Guiding is seen as a fantastic organisation to be a part of'.

The ceremony was attended by Mayor of Luton - Cllr Mohammad Ayub, Speaker of Bedford Borough Council – Cllr Jade Uko, Cllr Carol Hegley – Central Beds Council – Executive Member for Social Care and Housing, Cllr Caroline Maudlin - Central Beds Council – Deputy Executive Member for Community Services, Carol Roberts – Girlguiding Anglia Region President and Helen Pope – Girlguiding Cambridgeshire West County Commissioner
