I wish to welcome all trainers, owners, sponsors and spectators to Shelbourne Park for the BoyleSports 2022 Irish Greyhound Derby Final.
The Derby is the highlight of the RCÉ racing calendar and continues to attract attention throughout the world showcasing as it does all that is best in greyhound racing. 156 entries went into this year’s draw for a very attractive overall prize fund in excess of quarter of a million euros.
We owe a huge debt of gratitude to John Boyle and his team at BoyleSports who have sponsored the Derby for some 10 years. We express our thanks to all at BoyleSports for their fantastic promotion of this event and their continued commitment to the greyhound industry.
We are delighted to secure the return of live television coverage of this prestigious event for the first time in four years. A special thank you to Virgin Media and our excellent hosts Ivan Yates and Ian Fortune for their coverage of the event, and for recognising the value of greyhound racing as a sport of value to urban, rural and international audiences alike. We also wish to thank RPGTV for their coverage of the Derby and many of the greyhound classic events throughout 2022, which has exposed Irish greyhound racing to an international audience.
2022 has been marked by a series of positive developments on and off the track for RCÉ. Following a difficult couple of years of operation due to the pandemic, we are re-building the commercial elements of our activity and restoring footfall to stadia and increasing revenue from food and beverage and tote operations. I want to also acknowledge the ongoing support of government and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, in the allocation of €17.6m from the Horse & Greyhound Fund in 2022 and the supports received during a challenging 2020 and 2021. We wish to assure the people of Ireland this investment in our sport is returned in multiples to the Irish economy and Exchequer.
2022 saw the delivery of a world-class traceability system RCÉTs for all racing greyhounds giving us the leading edge in regulation and ensuring the highest standards possible in animal welfare. Phase 2, which is about to commence, will further enhance our role and position in maintaining best practices. This requires the support of the entire industry which has been transformational in its approach to welfare and embracing new processes.
For now, I hope you will all thoroughly enjoy a night of exceptional greyhound racing, on a night when the 2022 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby winner will become known. I wish all finalists and their connections the best of luck in tonight’s final .

Finn aiming to provide the black jacket a longoverdue success
When Ballymac Finn is placed in traps ahead of the Derby, he will be hoping to end a drought for trap four runners that stretches back to 2011. Not since that year, when Razldazl George raced to success, has the Irish Derby champion worn the black jacket. Of course, many will feel that Ballymac Finn can end that sequence
Warrior can take heart in the fact that trap five has won eight Derby finals since the turn of the century. It is easily the most prolific trap with the latest win for the orange jacket coming in 2019 when Lenson Bocko raced to victory.
Susie Sapphire wore the red jacket of trap one last year, who maintained her unbeaten record through the classic for trainer Owen McKenna. Fast forward twelve months and Callaway Pro Am is bidding to replicate the feat for the same handler. Since the turn of the century, trap one has only been responsible for four winners, although two of them came in the last four renewals. can siblings Marie and Finn become the youngest ever winner?
Tina Marina raced to a wonderful success in the 1996 Derby, becoming the youngest greyhound to do so. At 684 days old she was a full three days younger than last year’s champion Susie ASapphire.yearon, her record is under threat from siblings Maries Wedding and Ballymac Finn.
The pair were born in late November 2020 and, as you read these words, they are only 670days old. Should either come home in front they would take over the mantle as the youngest Derby champion of all time. Now that would be something.
Last year, Susie Sapphire ended a drought of over twenty years for the bitches when becoming the first female to win the classic this century. In doing so, she became the ninth female winner of the PriorDerby.toSusie Sapphire, the previous lady to come home in front was Spring Time in 1999.
Remarkably, Ger Watson’s brilliant bitch was the third female to win Derby in the 90’s. The others being The Other Toss in 1990 and Tina Marina in 1996.
For those wondering, the nine bitches to have tasted Derby success are Monalogue in 1933, Muinessa (1937), Brave Damsel (1941), Catsrock Daisy (1972), Penny County (1979), The Other Toss (1990), Tina Marina (1996), Spring Time (1999) and last year’s winner Susie Sapphire.
2021 was actually a very special year for the ladies as Singalong Sally finished runner-up to Susie Sapphire, making it the first time the bitches had finished first and second in a Derby. There is another Derby first this year with half of tonight’s field representing the fairer sex.
Since Penny County and Nameless Pixie reached the Derby final in 1979, with the former winning it, two bitches have reached the decider on seven more occasions but this is the first year that three have made it through the series. Crafty Kokoro, Maries Wedding and Droopys Nice One have plenty to be proud about.
Super sire Sydney with four to match prairie
Over the past few years Droopys Sydney has achieved simply amazing statistics as a sire. His dominance in the past two years, in particular, has been well documented but, even by his own standards, to see four of his sons and daughters make a Derby decider is incredible.
Crafty Kokoro, Maries Wedding, Ballymac Finn and Droopys Nice One all represent team Sydney and all four have obvious claims. Amazingly, it’s not the first time a sire was responsible for four of the six finalists. If you go all the way back to the 1967 Derby, which was held at Harold’s Cross, another super sire matched his
Flash was the most predominant sire in Ireland at the time and had four finalists in the form of Dry Flash, Hurricane Bertie, Ricard Flash and Baled Hay. There was no luck for the quartet, however, as the late, great Tom Lynch claimed the last of his four Derby successes with the brilliant Russian Gun. For the record, Dry Flash was second, some three and a half lengths adrift.
Not for the first time, Pat Guilfoyle was the man to follow in the opening round as he sent out four of the twenty-six heat winners including Good Cody, who set the standard with a blistering 29.25 run.
Guilfoyle’s other winners came in the form of his 2021 finalist Explosive Boy, Magical Kuba and Juvenile Classic winner Wi Can Dream. There were also hat tricks for Peter Cronin and Pat Buckley.
Cronin’s trio of winners came on Friday in the opening session with 2021 finalist All About Ted winning in 29.73, while his half sister All About Annie was the biggest priced winner of the round at 25-1. 12-1 chance Decs Guinness also won for Cronin completing a 1858/1 treble.
The Pat Buckley treble didn’t quite pay as handsomely with Bobsleigh Dream the biggest priced of the trio at 2-1. She clocked a fast 29.33 to set the standard in the second session of opening round heats. Her young kennel companion Tullig Raven also went fast, making all to dominate in 29.38.
Ballinabola Ed was the last of the Buckley trained winners, confirming his standing as the Derby favourite with a swashbuckling display. He came from lengths back, after a slow start, to pick up his kennel companion and 2021 Derby runner-up Singalong Sally to win in 29.62.
Others to go fast included Mustang Jet in the very first heat of the classic. The Dolores Ruth trained star ran out a ready winner in 29.43. Race of Champions winner Bockos Budsit looked very comfortable in a 29.40 success, while Sentimental Lad saw off Vincenzo after a great battle to record 29.48.
There was also a very encouraging display from Coolavanny Hoffa as he displayed fine early speed to emerge a comfortable scorer in 29.56. It was a sign of things to come.
After claiming his second Derby some twelve months earlier with Susie Sapphire, Owen McKenna ended the opening round with a decent winner as Callaway Pro Am displayed promise in a 29.66 success. Little did we know what he would go onto achieve in the subsequent weeks.
The second round really did start with a bang. After an encouraging run the previous week, Coolavanny Hoffa produced one of the great runs to move to the head of the sponsors betting for outright glory.
Showing devastating early speed, Hoffa posted one of the fastest ever third bend clocks before coming home clear in 29.13. It was a clear statement of his intentions.
The greyhound he knocked off the top of the betting, Ballinabola Ed, didn’t disappoint either. In fact, he was next fastest as he came home two lengths clear of the everpopular Gortkelly Nestor in 29.27.
Even at this early stage in the Derby, the cream was starting to come to the top. Callaway Pro Am produced an eyecatching performance to win in 29.33, leaving most very impressed, while Ballymac Finn backed up a fine opening round effort with a trap to line success in 29.36.
Others starting to play their hand included Explosive Boy as he stepped up on his opening round victory to win in 29.40, while his kennel companion Vincenzo was also starting to warm up. The powerful son of Droopys Sydney came home in front in 29.45. Born Warrior was also entering many notebooks after he flew to the third turn before going on to hold Maris Wedding by three parts of a length in 29.46.
English Derby champion Romeo Magico was also making waves. The Graham Holland trained tar displayed awesome back straight pace to win in 29.54, leaving the impression there was much better to come.
Stefans Rock also deserves a mention. After winning at 10-1 in the opening round, he saw off some big names to win again at 14-1. Sadly, Good Cody was one of the big names behind him as he hit the deck at the turn to crash out of the classic.
The Gods were smiling on Shelbourne Park ahead of the third round as the torrential rain that fell all day ceased only minutes ahead of the opening race. On a slightly slower track to the previous weeks, there was little between the heat winners on the clock with Vincenzo earning the honour of going fastest.
The Pat Guilfoyle trained powerhouse made a fast start and put himself right in the Derby picture by making every inch to stop the clock in 29.49.
The undoubted clash of the night came as Callaway Pro Am, Coolavanny Hoffa and Maries Wedding flashed past the post locked in battle. The judge was called into action with the verdict going to Callaway Pro Am in 29.76 as he again highlighted his Derby credentials. Unfortunately, Ballinabola Ed was eliminated in this contest after finding opening bend traffic.
It as one of two winners on the night for Owen McKenna and owner Denis Murphy as Callaway Masters also came home in front, leading from the corner to win in 29.86.
The English/Irish Derby double remained a possibility as Romeo Magic impressed. He outgunned Ballymac Finn down the back straight before coming home clear in 29.59. Graham Holland later completed a double with Bockos Budsit who dominated to see off the eye-catching Annagh Bailey in 29.59.
Tullig Raven looked a really bright prospect in the opening heat as he showed his rivals, including Explosive Boy, a clean pair of heels before emerging a good winner in 29.56.
It wasn’t all about early speed on the night, however. Barefoot Supremo ran on well to deny Bulletfromagun in 29.66, while Crafty Kokoro was starting to really shine on the biggest stage. She came from a mile back to beat warm favourite Born Warrior in 29.65.
After suffering defeat in the third round, Coolavanny Hoffa made no mistakes in the quarter-finals, showing his trademark early speed to dominate. Cryptopunk and Vincenzo ran well in defeat but had no answer to the Derby favourite who came home clear in 29.24.
Callaway Pro Am was next fastest as he maintained his unbeaten record in the classic with a flawless display of front running in the final heat, holding the massive finish of Crafty Kokoro by a head in 29.41. Explosive Boy chased the pair through in third.
Ballymac Finn put his third-round defeat behind him in the opening heat. Leading throughout, he saw off the staying on duo of Skywalker Barry and Gortkelly Nestor in 29.59.
Unfortunately, for supporters of Romeo Magico, the Derby double wasn’t going to happen as he missed the start before finishing fifth.
Maries Wedding produced a massive run to reel in Born Warrior in the remaining heat. Clocking a fast 29.44, she gave notice that she was still a live Derby challenger.
In a terrible blow for his connections, Vincenzo was withdrawn ahead of the semi-finals leaving eleven to battle it out in the semi-finals. Both heats were certainly memorable. The opening heat always promised to be spectacular and it didn’t disappoint.
Born Warrior and Coolavanny Hoffa battled it out up front in the opening half of the contest but Callaway Pro Am was perfectly positioned in third and, when the complexion of the race changed between the last two bends, the last named took advantage.
Coolavanny Hoffa challenged Born Warrior on the inside of the track before inexplicably checking his stride. Born Warrior then swung off the final turn, in his normal manner, leaving room for the advancing Callaway Pro Am to charge to the front.
Crafty Kokoro, after finding early traffic, was in an impossible position at halfway but flew home to finish second, just a length and a half behind the impressive Callaway Pro Am, who maintained his unbeaten record in the classic with a 29.64 return. Born Warrior was the third
heat was more straightforward with litter mates Ballymac Finn and Maries Wedding dominating throughout. Maries Wedding went up fastest but was forced out of the way on the corner by her brother, Ballymac Finn, who proceeded to make all thereafter.
Maries Wedding did push hard into the third turn but Ballymac Finn stayed on well to secure an impressive two and a half length victory in 29.48. The race for third saw Droopys Nice One overcome a little bump off the second turn to finish three parts of a length further adrift. Agonisingly, for connections of Gortkelly Nestor, he failed to qualify by a length in fourth for the second year running at the semi-final stage.

trainer: Owen McKenna, New Inn, Co. Tipperary
The only unbeaten finalist. He is representing trainer Owen McKenna, who is seeking a third Derby victory after Like A Shot in 2004 and last year’s brilliant winner Susie Sapphire. The least experienced runner in the contest but set to start favourite after a series of brilliant performancesthrough the prelims. Blessed with tremendous pace from start to finish, he is expected to make a bold bid from a favourable draw in the red jacket.

One of three wonderful bitches in the line-up. Already a classic winner after her Corn Cuchulainn success over six bends, she has always been touted as a potential superstar. While others are faster to halfway, there are none that can rival her in the second half of the contest. She has produced some incredible finishes in recent weeks and is sure to prove popular with punters. No matter the front-runner, his or her supporters will be glancing behind for this lady.
probable S.p: 4-1

Breeder: Sonia Butler, Navan, Co. Meath trainer: Keeley McGee, Old Castle, Co. Meath
A young bitch with a huge future. She was already established as a star ahead of the Derby after dipping under the magical 28 second barrier for 525yds at this venue in May and, yet,she seems to have improved through the Derby. If she succeeds in winning the Derby, she will become the youngest winner in the near 100-year history of the classic.
A good starter with superb pace throughout, she clearly has the profile to make a bold bid.

A litter brother to Maries Wedding and, therefore, also seeking to become the youngest winner in the long, rich his tory of the Derby. His owner/trainer Liam Dowling is seeking a second Derby success having won it in the past with Ballymac Matt in 2015. He was a superb winner of his quarter-final and semi-final assignments. A natural starter with a massive engine, he is understandably amongst the favourites to land tonight’s prize.

The Champion Plate winnerhas electrifying early speed that could carry him into a clear lead. Another with obvious claims. probable S.p: 3-1

Since debuting in the Rural Kennels Unraced at Clonmel, this powerful lady has never competed against anything other than the very best. A first Derby finalist for Murt Leahy, although he is no stranger to classic success after capturing the Juvenile Derby last year and this year’s Oaks. Nice One has really appreciated the step up to 550yds and fully deserves her place in the decider. She may be a big price but has both the pace and power to surprise a few. probable S.p: 25-1

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’
The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ only in the following circumstances:
• Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race.
• If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare
Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference
If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded.
(A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him.
(B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released.
(C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.
