FINAL SIX REMAIN
Just over a half minute of action remains in the SIS Irish Cesarewitch after two thrilling semi finals at Mullingar on Monday night.
As in the opening round, Akay Forty Seven set the standard, but she did so in very different fashion than expected. Coming from well off the pace, she will now line-up alongside her kennel companion Amazing Alice as they bid to hand Pat Guilfoyle a fourth success sin the Midland’s classic. Standing in their way will be the likes of Ripley Lad, Rioja Smasher, Clonfert Lorenzo and Razldazl Curtis.
RIPLEY’S LATE CHARGE
Austin Kelly’s Ripley Lad actually took the opening heat for hall of fame trainer Paddy McCormack.
This was a tightly contested affair with Rioja Smasher and Ripley Lad battling for the early lead for much of the way before Amazing Alice joined the pair. Bull Run Norris left himself with no chance at trap rise, missing the kick from the inside draw to trail the field in the early yards, while Airlie Noel sadly lost his action on the run to the turn. In contrast, both Rioja Smasher and Ripley lads went up fastest on the outside of the track. Droopys Wyatt and Amazing Alice were just behind the pair approaching the turn but they were left short of room as Rioja Smasher cut the bend. Droopys Wyatt came out of it worst, being relegated to fifth behind the leaders. Despite taking a bump, Rioja Smasher led the field into the back straight but Ripley Lad was on his shoulder while Amazing Alice was now poised in third. By halfway, Ripley Las was upsides Rioja Smasher and pressing for the lead but Amazing Alice was now in full stride also.
Displaying great pace into the third turn, Amazing Alice made her move on the inside of the front pair, only to check her stride. Ripley Lad hit the front momentarily but was racing wide which allowed both Rioja Smasher and Amazing Alice to dispute the lead into the home straight. In a desperate finish, Amazing Alice seemed to be getting the upper hand once moving to the front, only for Ripley Lad to come with a late final thrust. The pair flashed past the post locked in battle with the verdict eventually going to Ripley Lad (by a neck in 33.42 (32.72 calc.). Rioja Smasher was the third qualifier a further length and a half adrift.
AKAY NOT TO BE DENIED
As favourite for outright honours, Akay Forty Seven was expected to come home in front in the second heat but she was left behind in the early yards, eventually finding herself in last behind Razldazl Curtis on the bend.
It was clear she needed to doo something drastic but she created her own luck, staying tight to the fence and driving her way into third spot as they entered the back straight. Suddenly, she was in the perfect position to launch her challenge behind Razldazl Curtis and Clonfert Lorenzo. Gradually moving through the gears, the daughter of Holden Spy and Mustang Vienna moved second by the third turn and was just a length and a half behind Razldazl Curtis between the last two bends. With the leader staying to the middle of the track, Akay Forty Seven made her move as they turned for home. Shooting through the gap, the powerful bitch was now on her way to victory. Staying on strongly, Akay Forty Seven saw off Razldazl Curtis by two lengths in a fast 33.23 (32.53 calc.). Clonfert Lorenzo stayed on to secure the third qualifying spot, just three lengths adrift.
THE CESAREWITCH FINAL
The trap draw for the final of the SIS Irish Cesarewitch has thrown up endless possibilities with the majority of the field holding claims.
As the two inside seeds, kennel companions Akay Forty Seven and Amazing Alice were always going to be beside each other but Pat Guilfoyle may have preferred if the traps were reversed. Akay Forty Seven will line-up on the fence and needs to come away racing to avoid her rails-seeking kennel companion in trap two. Of course, Amazing Alice ran from trap two in last year’s final when finishing runner-up to Meenagh Miracle. As the sole wide seed, Ripley Lad faces a favourable draw in six for Paddy McCormack and Austin Kelly. He is sure to have plenty of support. That leaves the three middle seeds. Razldazl Curtis will race from three, Clonfert Lorenzo from four and Rioja Smasher in five. All three greyhounds can go up fast and the draw shouldn’t cause them any real concern, especially if they come away racing. In short, the draw should make for a fascinating decider.

This sport of ours is thrilling. Edge of the seat. A rush from the second the traps open. It's always been that way. Part of what makes us what we are. The coming together of communities on the track. The retired trainer walking his dogs down our street. The fundraising, the charity, the simple reason to meet. The hundreds of years of tradition that forms our sport. The generations of families brought together by their love of the dogs. We stand for all that is good about our sport.
