IRELAND’S OLDEST EVENT

GREYHOUND RACING was first introduced to Dublin with the opening of Shelbourne Park in May 1927. The following year, the first major competition to be run at the new venue was the Easter Cup, named to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising.

The competition has remained ever-present since that inaugural renewal, with the exceptions of 1953 and 2017 during the Dublin closure.

The history books will confirm that the first winner of the easter Cup was Odd Blade, coming home in front in 30.64 for the 525yd trip with Debonair second. A year later, the son of Hidden Joker defended his crown, seeing off some talented trackers including a certain Mick The Miller and odds-on favourite Captured Half.

Odd Blade posted 30.71, earning his owner Agnes O’Brien the sum of £60, with Mick The Miller second.

The pair would meet again in the National Cup where the placings were reversed. Mick The Miller would, of course, go onto even bigger things, capturing the English Derby in both 1929 and 1930. He remains one of the most famous greyhounds to ever race and it all started in the Easter Cup. Another famous winner in the early years was Luke Maher’s great bitch Monologue. She won the Coursing Oaks before capturing the 1932 Easter Cup. A year later she confirmed her stands as one of the all-time greats by capturing the second ever Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park in 1933.

There was another female winner in 1986 as Baby Doll came home in front for Tom Dolan. She was fancied on the big night and duly obliged in fine style, coming home five lengths clear.

A HAT TRICK FOR MATT

After capturing the Easter Cup twice in the 80s with Spartacus and Spartafitz, future Hall of Fame trainer Matt O’Donnell began the 1990s with a hat trick of wins in the classic. Lassana Champ was the 1990 champion and Farloe Melody gave Matt O’Donnell a fourth and fifth wins in the competition, winning in 1991 and 1992. He went on to record a memorable English Derby victory in 1992.

Given the success of bitches in the competition through the decades, it may come as a surprise that the last female winner came back in 1997 when Park Jewel came home in front for trainer Seamus Fahy.

She returned a year later and went close to recording a famous double but found Mr Pickwick too good on the night.

In victory, Mr Pickwick began Paul Hennessy’s love affair with the classic.

Hennessy has since gone on to win the competition more times than any other trainer. His second success came soon after the millennium with Mr Bozz while the great Late Late Show was untouchable in both 2001 and 2002 for Hennessy.

2003 provided an incredible finish with Larry Dunne’s Mobhi Gamble coming from out of the clouds to deny Clover Hare. It was a very different story in 2004 with Premier Fantasy producing a dominant display to win for the late Seamus Graham. In victory he posted a sensational track record breaking 28.08, establishing himself as one of the fastest ever greyhounds.

Mineola Farloe completed a double for Graham in 2005 and went close to capturing the English Derby only to run into Westmead Hawk in the final.

“Spanish Battleship...

It’s fair to say he has earned his legendary status”

In terms of the biggest names in the sport, none are bigger than that of Spanish Battleship. He is best remembered for his Irish Derby hat trick in 1953, ’54 and 55 but he also captured the Easter Cup in 1954 and ’55. It’s fair to say he has earned his legendary status.

The big-name winners came thick and fast in the subsequent decades. Sixty years ago, in 1962, one of the great winners of the event was The Grand Canal. He recorded an incredible Easter Cup/ English Derby double for Paddy Dunphy in 1962.

The 1970s featured victories for two of Gay McKenna’s best greyhounds, the great Postal Vote in 1971 and, fifty years ago, Catsrock Daisy in 1972. Postal Vote went on to run up the Derby, while Catsrock went one better in the Derby to record the double, becoming the second bitch to do so after Monologue.

The most famous of the winners in the 1980’s was Indian Joe. Johnny Hayes’s star captured the 1980 Easter Cup and, shortly afterwards, raced to victory in the English Derby. It’s been forty years since Reggie Roberts won with the flying bitch Speedy Wonder. A real speedster, she flashed from traps, making all to land the

LAD GIVES OWEN HIS FIRST WIN

The late, great Ger McKenna won the Easter Cup with both Move Gas in 1969 and Tantallons Flyer in 1975.

Over thirty years later, his son Owen also tasted victory in the classic with Ahane Lad emerging a brilliant winner of the 2006 decider. It was sadly the final race of his career. But it wouldn’t be the last time Owen would get his hands on the trophy.

Paul Hennessy was back to winning ways in 2007 with Ardkill Jamie seeing off the 2006 Derby champion Razldazl Billy in one of the great contests of modern times.

Another Easter Cup success followed for Hennessy in 2008 with Tyrur Kenny providing him with his fifth of the decade.

Owen McKenna secured a second Easter Cup victory in 2010 with former UK racer Thurlesbeg Joker. The powerful galloper was one of the stars of that year and was always going to take some containing once turning second. He duly powered home to see off Toomaline Jack by a length.

Half-brothers Makeshift and Razldazl George served up a thriller in the 2011 decider. In the end, Makeshift was too strong and held off his kennelmate by a shorthead in 29.59. It set up a massive year for Dolores Ruth, as the aforementioned Razldazl George went on to finish third in the English Derby before winning the Irish Derby that September.

A DECADE SINCE BIG MIKE TRIUMPHED

It’s ten years since a four-year-old Tyrur Big Mike finally gaining the big race victory his massive talent so deserved. PJ Fahy’s star faced a top-class field and, despite running very wide in parts, he was back in front by halfway only to leave the door open around the last two bends. Razldazl George challenged but Big Mike wasn’t going to be denied and he dug in to win by half a length in 29.73.

Ballymac Vic was the odds-on favourite to see off his four rivals in the 2013 decider but it was the Niall Dunne trained North Bound that took his opportunity to land the much-valued prize.

The favourite carried no luck, losing his chance at traps. In contrast, North Bound challenged for the lead into the turn alongside Cabra Buck before asserting.

Going three lengths clear into the back straight, North Bound maintained a huge gallop throughout to eventually come home six lengths clear in 29.46. The winner was owned by Florida based priest, Fr Dan Greene.

The Killenaule Kennels of Matt and Frances O’Donnell claimed a sixth Easter Cup title in 2014 with Skywalker Farloe coming home clear. The powerful tracker was one of the favourites alongside Tyrur Sugar Ray and the duo fought out the finish.

Skywalker Farloe got first run on his rival which proved decisive. Tyrur Sugar Ray closed into the third turn but Skywalker Farloe stayed on to record a three parts of a length victory for owners Ray Patterson, Gavin Byrne and Tom O’Donnell.

BLAZES GIVES GRAHAM HIS FIRST WIN

Graham Holland tasted Easter Cup success for the first time in 2015 with the brilliant Sidarian Blaze. He and Slippery Fred dominated the betting and they had a fine tussle on the track. Slippery Fred led early but could never shake off Sidarian Blaze. The latter displayed a fine turn of pace down the back straight to move into a two length advantage around the final bends.

Larry Dunne’s Slippery Fred cut for the inside and challenged again on the run in but Sidarian Blaze held

his rival by a length in 29.52.

It was again the turn of Paul Hennessy in 2016 as he sent out the John Turner owned Jaytee Jet to a superb success. A 6-4 favourite, Jaytee Jet took charge down the back straight before running out a superb two and a half length winner over Skywalker Rory.

It was a seventh Easter Cup win for Paul Hennessy.

Not long after Jaytee Jet raced to magical success in the last English Derby final to be run at Wimbledon.

Due to the dispute which affected racing in Dublin, the event wasn’t run in 2017 but it made a welcome return in 2018. Colarhouse Gerry triumphed for owner Jason Whyte and trainer Owen McKenna.

Derby winner Good News was clear favourite with Droopys Noah his biggest rival in the ring but both missed the kick. Instead, Colarhouse Gerry flashed to the bend and beat Tom Buggy’s Kilgraney Master by four lengths in 29.56. He provided Owen McKenna with a third Easter Cup victory.

A second victory for Graham Holland came in 2019 with the razor-sharp Clona Blaze making every inch to hold off his kennel companion Clonbrien Prince in a thrilling finish.

A brilliant starter, Clona Blaze was the 5-2 favourite and soon raced three lengths clear although he needed every inch of it as Clonbrien Prince came with a withering run. Kevin O’Brien’s Clona Blaze dug deep to hold on by a neck in 29.37.

WOLFE WINS IN SILENCE

Graham Holland completed a hat trick of Easter Cup victories in 2020. The final was run just days after greyhound racing went behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it was Wolfe that raced to a famous success to earie silence.

A star throughout his wonderful career, the brilliant tracker was the 6-4 favourite for the decider but was denied an early lead by his kennel companion Murts Boher. Wolfe did turn second, however, and made a decisive move into the third turn, edging his way to the front on the inside of Murts Boher before holding his great rival Ballymac Anton in a driving finish. Wolfe hit the line a length and a half to the good in 29.89.

And that leads us to 2021 and the victory of Knocknaboul Syd. One of the real stars of the track through 2020 and ‘21, he was a popular winner for Pat Buckley and owner Pat McElligott.

It as a vintage decider with the flying bitch Billys Diva and the hugely fast Great Name That the joint favourites but neither could match Knocknaboul Syd to the turn. On a very wet night, Syd was too sharp in the early yards and quickly put the result beyond doubt.

Beach Avenue, a finalist tonight, came from out of the clouds to grab second on the line but Knocknaboul Syd couldn’t be touched as he emerged a brilliant four length winner in 30.08, on a track rated half a second slow.

Scarcely needs an introduction.

The undoubted star of 2021 after winning the Puppy Oaks, the Sporting Press Irish Oaks and going unbeaten through the Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby. In victory, she also became the first female winner of the Derby this century and the second youngest winner of all time. Blessed with sensational early speed, she is a deserving favourite in the same box from which she won her three previous major finals.

T2 Knight Tornado with Conor Scahill

A brilliant puppy, he was a finalist in the 2020 Juvenile Derby after posting a stunning 27.88 in the semis. That clock remains one of the fastest ever recorded at Shelbourne Park. After a disappointing start to ‘21, he ended the year in style, reaching the semi-finals of the Laurels and winning a few hot races around here. A finalist in the Gold Cup last month, he remains unbeaten in the Easter Cup and is clearly a leading fancy.

PROBABLE S.P: 6/1

Displayed massive promise as a youngster, posting a very fast time in the opening round of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial despite his inexperience. Luck wasn’t always on his side through the year but he did reach the Laurels semi-finals. He returned this year a stronger and more mature athlete. A brilliant 28.11 winner in mid-February, he has carried that form into the Easter Cup. Blessed with brute pace, he is a big threat to the favourite.

PROBABLE S.P: 4/1

A winner of his second career start around here in 28.87, this powerful galloper has gone from strength to strength. He reached the third round of the Kirby Memorial, was a semi-finalist in the Derby Plate and ended the year in style winning the valuable Novice 750 at the Winter Racing Festival. He was also a finalist in the Savana Open 750 at Clonmel last month. One of the biggest finishers in training, you can never T4 Darbys Delight take your eye off him.

PROBABLE S.P: 25/1 with Nelius O’Connell

Already a classic winner after dominating over six bends in the final of the Corn Cuchulainn in 2021. A top-class tracker with huge pace throughout, he was a semi-finalist in the Leger in 2020 and a finalist last year. He also reached the final of the Champion Stakes in 2021 and was a Derby semi-finalist. Always capable of a massive run, he needs to be at his sharpest but might get first run on those on his flanks. Certainly, represents value.

PROBABLE S.P: 16/1

The 2021 Easter Cup runner-up.

One of the most versatile trackers in training, he is also amongst the fastest. During an incredible career he was a semi-finalist in the laurels in 2020, won the valuable Curraheen Park Open 575, was a fast finishing third in the Shelbourne Open 600, a semi-finalist in the English Derby, a finalist in the RCETS Open 600 and a close second in the O’Learys Driving School 575. Simply, just an incredible performer.

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’

The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ only in the following circumstances: • Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race.

• If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference Unauthorised photography in this stadium is strictly prohibited.

If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded.

Greyhound Turning in Traps

(A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted.

If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him.

(B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released.

(C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.

Computerised Trap Draw made at Rásaíocht Con Éireann Kennel area strictly out of bounds to all except owners, trainers, and officials.

If greyhounds have to be withdrawn, owners are requested to do so before they appear on the Race Card.
