CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

On behalf of the Board of Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ), I wish to welcome all trainers, owners, sponsors and spectators to Limerick Greyhound Stadium for the Final of the 2023 Irish St Leger. I also extend a warm welcome Mr. Tim Lucey who has recently taken up the role of Chief Executive of RCÉ. Our sport will greatly benefit from Tim’s wealth of experience in corporate and financial governance and his management of Cork County Council, which is Ireland’s largest local authority by area. Limerick has a lengthy and proud association with the St Leger stretching back to when the Classic found a permanent home at the old Markets Field Greyhound Stadium. Everyone is looking forward with anticipation to seeing who will be crowned Irish St Leger champion following on from last year’s memorable win by Bobsleigh Dream, trained by Limerick’s Pat Buckley and owned by Willie Joe Murphy from Kerry. This year’s event has been boosted by the signing of a four-year title sponsorship deal with willwego.com, marking the company’s first partnership with greyhound racing. The newest sponsorship agreement demonstrates the company’s commitment to our sport and provides a significant boost to the St Leger, which this year offers a first prize of €30,000 to the winner. Tonight’s final will once again be broadcast on RGPTV which provides a national and international platform for this Classic event. I hope everyone at trackside enjoys the final of one of the oldest classics in the greyhound calendar, and I wish all finalists and their connections the best of luck. Enjoying a fast start to the classic, trainer Pat Buckley claimed three of our thirteen opening round heats but in front of adoring Dock Road gazes, the champion stole the show in a thrilling victory to commence the defence of her crown. Last in the early yards of Heat 10, Bobsleigh Dream overhauled Da Bold Freddie in the dying strides for a thrilling one length verdict in 29.76.

Hugo returned a battling performance to land Heat 11 when getting up close home for a one length defeat of Droopys De Luxe in 30.16 before the lightly raced Nomadic Nova impressed in the concluding heat of the round. Overhauling Sunshine Dream at halfway, a time of 29.75 confirmed his classic credentials. That first session left the St Leger with a very open complexion and firmly in the outright picture following Heat 6 victory was Michael O’Donovan’s Another Holiday. Confirming early paced qualities over the trip, he repelled the late effort of Pennys Lynx by two lengths in 29.59 with Music Glideaway a close-up third. Best of the remainder in the first round, Clonroosk Sydney posted 29.56 when leading home Derby runner-up Bockos Crystal to claim Heat 9 after Disco Pants had set a smart standard in the opening heat as that Michael Daly charge led Romeo Hanzo throughout a one and a half-length victory, posting 29.59.

REX RAMPANT AS KIRBY CHAMPS RULE ROUND TWO

Just fourth in the opening round, 2022 Con & Annie Kirby winner Swords Rex bounced right back to his astounding best when fastest of the second-round heats in the St Leger as he headed a Graham Holland double of heat victories with the past two winners of the Kirby! Swift to stride from trap 1 in the opener, Swords Rex repelled the early paced Another Holiday for a first bend lead before containing that rival throughout a three-length winning verdict, posting a stunning 29.27. The kennel double would arrive in Heat 7 when current Kirby champ Clonbrien Treaty further warmed to his classic task, going back-to-back in the St Leger with another stunning early paced display. Becoming glaringly obvious that previous Limerick form was going to prove crucial in this renewal, the defending champion also remained unbeaten at second-round stage when again thrilling with her strong staying racing style to conclude the session. Headed in the early stages, the Pat Buckley darling remained within four lengths of leader Beepers Lariat on the run to halfway and duly finishing fastest, struck the front close home for a neck verdict in 29.68, with Churchtown Syd third. Pat Buckley would repeat his treble winning performance from opening night when Bobsleigh Syd also went back-to-back, claiming Heat 2 in 29.70 before

exciting pup Glengar Elvis held five lengths over Music Glideaway in Heat 6, posting 29.56. Arriving to the St Leger on the back of Derby Consolation victory, Trinity Junior left his bumpy opening round outing well behind when sparking a double for trainer Peter Cronin in a dominant performance throughout Heat 3. Battling his way to a first bend lead, he scarcely sighted a rival in a six-length defeat of Droopys Deluxe, posting 29.55. 2022 Kirby finalist Mr Chelm completed the kennel brace in Heat 5, and in similar fashion as he too led to the corner before fending off the late attentions of Nomadic Nova by two lengths in 29.62.

LIMERICK FORM DOMINATES QUARTERFINALS

By the completion of our St Leger quarterfinals, the most outstanding feature of this year’s classic was just how influential past form and previous Limerick winners had been on the 2023 renewal. Emphasising the fact, the four quarterfinal heats were claimed by a brace of Kirby winners, a Kirby finalist, and the defending St Leger champion as Swords Rex again went fastest. Repeating the same double as that of a week earlier, trainer Graham Holland guided the event’s fastest runner to victory in Heat 2 as Swords Rex repelled Beepers Lariat to the opening bend before leading that gallant rival to the line with two and a half lengths to spare in 29.35, as a brave Ballinabola Una rallied for third following early bumping. Breaking sharply from trap 6, he scampered clear to a near three length first bend lead before completing a virtual solo passage with five lengths to spare over Gaytime Hugo in 29.38 as Churchtown Syd again stayed well for third. Only two challengers would remain unbeaten to semi-final stage and completing her own hattrick of wins within a stubborn defence of her crown, Bobsleigh Dream claimed Heat 3 in her trademark strong staying fashion. Negotiating a path to a two-length second at the top of the backstraight, the champ reeled-in the pacesetting Trinity Junior at the third bend before completing with a length and a half to spare over that rival as Music Glideaway again battled his way to a qualifying third while three parts of a length adrift in 29.64. Having bounced back to winning ways on the previous weekend, Mr Chelm commenced the session when going back-to-back while adding a second semi-finalist for Peter Cronin. Closely tracking Another Holiday throughout the early exchanges, the 2022 Kirby finalist overhauled that rival at the second bend before stretching clear to a snug one and a halflength defeat of the strong running Sober Glory in 29.60, with Another Holiday retaining third.

Overhauling Graham Holland kennelmate Swords Rex at the third bend after that event favourite had set a searching early gallop, the Kirby champ stretched to a two-length winning margin in 29.43 as Ballinabola Una ensured a final runner for last season’s winning trainer, staying stoutly to grab Swords Rex for second close home.

SOBER STRIKES WITH TREATY UNBEATEN IN SEMIS

THE VERDICT:

THE 2023 Willwego.com Irish St Leger will without question be recalled as one of the hottest renewals ever staged whatever the final outcome, and our impending winner whoever that may be, will be hailed a truly worthy bearer of the classic crown.

However, any attempt to decipher our final puzzle must begin with the sole unbeaten finalist and seeking a second major title of the season at Limerick, Clonbrien Treaty is the worthy favourite. Defeating Beepers Lariat in his final prep race here at Limerick, the 2023 Con & Annie Kirby winner has added four heat victories in this St Leger campaign and chases a six-timer as the only wide seeded runner from his ideal trap 6 draw now. As if he needed it, that draw appears highly advantageous with five inside seeds to his left but in truth, he charts his own path with brilliant early pace and is rarely affected by runners to his left. That latter fact rang true a week ago when asserting his authority over superstar kennelmate Swords Rex and despite not matching his best efforts on the clock, that victory was arguably the most visually impressive of his entire career. He has early pace, he stays the trip well, he has a great draw, and highly pertinent now, he has the proven ability to produce his best in the fifth round of a major competition on this testing Limerick circuit. It’s hard to argue with adamant supporters who can’t see him contained! Route to victory is certainly more complicated for the inside seeds to the left of Clonbrien Treaty who excepting a bullet break, will be forced to battle in tight quarters while seeking racing room in the early stages of the final. That said, analysis of running styles suggests that all are willing to chart a straight line to the corner from their respective traps and until turning at least, all five should have the opportunity to contest for crucial command of the rails, or at the very minimum a forward position from which to challenge into the backstraight. Swords Rex has twice been the fastest heat winner of the event but although he led last week, his split times point to a below par performance behind Clonbrien Treaty. Does that suggest he is tiring within this campaign? Or can he bounce back to his brilliant best now? As a fan of the racing superstar, this commentator hopes that the latter proves true, but before last week, Swords Rex does not get beaten when turning in front and in punting terms at least, that concern will reluctantly steer the wager elsewhere. There were no such concerns surrounding Sober Glory following last week’s semi-finals as he turned

a competitive St Leger presence into an emphatic leading claim with his best performance of the event. He broke better, like a fresh runner in fact, and if repeating that start his 29.40 performance means that even Clonbrien Treaty will struggle to contain a runner who also sees out every yard strongly. His task now is to secure the inside rail ahead of Ballinabola Una while preventing Swords Rex, and other inside seeds, from sweeping across his path at the corner…… on last week’s evidence, he is well capable! One striking aspect of the opening semi-final last week was the massive prices available about Ballinabola Una, she returned at 14/1 in that two length second behind Clonbrien Treaty. Rewarded with a great draw in trap 1 within the context of this line-up, the youngest finalist is developing a teak tough profile and punters must not forget that she was fastest of all in the opening round. On bare numbers, she holds realistic final claims if she can defend the rails for closing marginally against Clonbrien Treaty from the third bend last week, she possibly stays the trip stronger than any. Note her early split last week and compare it to her first round 29.50 performance; she went to the bend 13 spots faster than in her semi, and she was only beaten two lengths! It takes a belief that she can bounce out of trap 1 and contain hot rivals to her right, but Una is definitely an option for value hunters, or shrewdies?! There is certainly greater impediment to a winning run for the brace of inside seeds to the outside of Swords Rex and how connections must be cursing a draw that sees Beepers Lariat sandwiched as he is. Although without a heat win, his quarterfinal second in a sizzling contest was the effort of a viable St Leger contender, but nothing short of a bullet break for a lead into the bend will suffice now. Widest of the inside seeds, similar comments apply to Mr Chelm and despite thoroughly impressing in a laudable battling runner-up performance behind Sober Glory last time, he must match Clonbrien Hero on the run to the corner and turn in advance of fellow inside seeds. Admired by the Dock Road patronage since his third in the 2022 Kirby, he will need to lower his best heat winning times for final glory. One possible scenario amongst many reads…. A largely level break sees Clonbrien Treaty race independently on the outside of a packing field separated by less than a length nearing the corner. Rounding Mr Chelm before the first of the inside seeds gets bumped wide, Clonbrien Treaty has taken command into the backstraight as aided by her rails pitch following a good break, Ballinabola Una emerges in second place through bumping, with Sober Glory in close pursuit. The order unchanged, Clonbrien Treaty claims the Leger while leading throughout, with Ballinabola Una edging out Sober Glory for second. Now you have a go!

Back at Limerick for the St Leger, the youngest finalist was fastest of all on opening night and has displayed battling qualities beyond her experience in subsequent qualification places. Ideally drawn, she stays every yard and capable of defending the rails to the corner, remains a threat to all if breaking sharply.

GREYHOUND CARE AND WELFARE RCÉ Injuries at Tracks Recovery Scheme Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) /Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) wishes to remind all Owners and Trainers that funding is available through the “Injuries at Tracks Recovery Scheme” for the treatment of greyhounds which have been injured while racing or partaking in Unofficial, Official Trials and RCÉ Licensed stadia. The Scheme is open to all owners and trainers who have incurred veterinary costs in the treatment of greyhounds to repair a career-ending orthopaedic (bone) injury*. *Career ending bone injuries may include fractured hocks, fractured long bones and multiple fractures of the metacarpals/metatarsals. An application to the Scheme shall be made in the knowledge that the greyhound will be immediately retired from competitive action (trials and races) following its treatment and every effort must be made to find this greyhound a suitable home. Any greyhound that has been treated through the Scheme shall not be sold or given away for racing. A fully paid invoice from the veterinary practice that completed the treatment of the greyhound and the completed application form together with (a) a veterinary certificate of treatment issued by the ‘track vet’ at the time the injury occurred (if injury occurred during racing) or (b) a veterinary certificate of treatment issued by the veterinary surgeon who treated the greyhound on day injury occurred together with confirmation from the relevant Racing Manager/ Control Steward of the occurrence of the injury (if injury occurred during Qualifying Trials), shall be submitted when applying to RCÉ for funding under this Scheme. RCÉ may require additional evidence regarding the retirement details of the greyhound prior to settling any application for funding. Assistance funding will be set at 75% of the veterinary cost, up to a maximum of €1000 per greyhound, for the treatment of a career-ending orthopaedic (bone) injury*. RCÉ is committed to encouraging responsible greyhound ownership and spreading the message amongst industry patrons that all racing greyhounds must be treated with care and that after racing each greyhound is afforded an opportunity to enjoy a happy retirement. Note that all claims from the RCÉ Injury at Tracks Recovery Scheme will be individually assessed and reviewed in detail. RCÉ reserves the right to withhold payment if it has reason to believe the claim to be fraudulent. Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’ The Stewards may declare a ‘NO RACE’ in the following circumstances: • Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race. • If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare • If for any other reason, all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference. If through any cause the race has to be abandoned before the start of the fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded.

Greyhound Turning in Traps (A) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion, that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again, no further attention will be given to him. (B) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion, the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. (C) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate, then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into traps again.
