This year’s event is the fourth of five Laurels that will be sponsored solely by you - the Friends and Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing. When we started out on the journey we were hoping to secure enough to cover one year of sponsorship and we could never have imagined the groundswell of support that followed and lead to five years as title sponsors of the event which is the highlight of the Cork Greyhound Racing calendar. The sponsorship is testament to the strength of our great greyhound community and the love of our sport nationwide. This is truly your Laurels, your event and you can all be immensely proud of your efforts. Tonight, on our biggest night of the year, we are honoured to host the Michael (Bart) Leahy Memorial Final, a fitting tribute to our dear friend Bart. You have been coming here in great numbers over the past four weeks to enjoy a feast of greyhound racing and I am sure that tonight will be no different. I want again on behalf of the Board to acknowledge the great work being done by the friends of Cork Greyhound Racing and to wish them continued success. We want to thank all the sponsors who make nights like this possible and we wish in particular to thank the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine Charlie McConologue T.D and his department for their continued support of our industry. OPENING ROUND

THE 2022 LAURELS BEGINS

GRAHAM Holland holds a very strong hand in the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Laurels and the Champion trainer recorded a superb treble as a large crowd turned out to watch the opening round at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

Bockos Budsit going quickest of the lot as the 4-6 favourite won with plenty to spare in heate seven. Owned by Beverley Lochead, the 4-6 favourite produced a flying start, clocking a sizzling 3.15 sectional. Clear from an early stage, Buckos Budsit ran out a most impressive winner, coming home with five lengths to spare over Ballinacarriga, in quickest of the round, 27.97. Six and a half lengths back in third was Cryptopunk. Holland’s treble started in the opener as reserve runner Garryvoe Joe delivered a brilliant performance to win for owner Pat Moloney. Laughil Roy was quickest into stride, but the 9-4 winner showed huge page around the opening turns and Garryvoe Joe led into the back straight. Always in control, the winner stayed on well in the closing stages as he beat Laughil Roy, by two lengths, in 28.18. A length back to Benalmadena Roxy in third place. Coolboy Rusty made the most of the rails pitch to win heat five. Trained by Graham Hol-

land for owner Eric Prestage, the 5-2 winner was in front early on and he kept finding in front as he just got the better of the running on Millridge Bryce, by a short head, in 28.44. Four lengths back to Galloping Sydney in third place. Trainer Paul Hennessy recorded a double on the night. Ilnotbeback was a most impressive winner of the closing race, winning for owner Sean Adams. After slipping around in front, the 2-1 winner had to be brave throughout and she pulled out all the stops to fend off the persistent challenge of Droopys Edison. Three quarters of a length separating the front two, in 28.02, with six lengths back to Moorstown Jet in third place. Hennessy was on the mark earlier in the night after the outstanding success of the exciting Beach Avenue in heat eight. Droopys Rocker had a big lead heading down the back straight, but the 10-3 winner wasn’t to be denied, finishing with real purpose, the Pat Healy runner got up in the final yards much to the delight of the Cork crowd, winning by a short head, in 28.33, with seven lengths back to Brogan Highway in third place. Skywalker Barry is another dog that just keeps giving and he returned to winning form in the second of the night. Trained by Michael O’Donovan for Ray Patterson, the 4-5 favourite produced one of his best starts and he led all the way, winning in 28.18, a length clear of Kilcolgan Comet, with four lengths back to Slaneyside Jimbo in third place. Owner Steve Noble made the trip across from the UK worthwhile as his Scooby Duchess landed

heat three for trainer Jennifer O’Donnell. Ante post favourite Swords Rex was in early trouble, and it was the 5-1 shot Scooby Duchess who flew around the opening bends in front. Sticking to her task well up front, it was a magnificent 28.10 winning run, three quarters of a length clear of Ballymac Bailey, with three and a half lengths back to Wi Can Dream in third. Luckily for supporters of Swords Rex, just like Serene Ace, another leading fancy for outright glory, both finished fourth and they remain in the event ahead of round two next week. In top form in recent weeks, Russmur Pat beat a strong field of runners in race four. Trained by James O’Regan for owner Jeremiah Murphy, once the 2-1 winner slipped around in front, it was game over. Such a powerful running sort, Russmur Pat ran on strongly to beat Jaytee Wexford, by ten and a half lengths, in 28.15, with a neck back to Millridge Jayden in third. Things didn’t go right for defending champion One Time Only, but he just did enough to qualify in fourth place. Local trainer Pat Kiely has a real contender in Droopys Iconic and the 2-1 market leader impressed when winning heat number six for owners the Golden Spoon Syndicate. The lightly raced winner caught the eye with back straight speed and once he took up the running, it was always going to take something special to reel him. A 28.28 winning performance, a length and a half clear of Ballymac Whispa, with two lengths back to Burgess Rapid in third place. Good Cody, trained by Patrick Guilfoyle for John Kennedy Jnr, got back to winning ways in heat number nine. Sent off the short priced 2-7 favourite, the classy performer was in total control early on as he stormed around the opening corners in front. Showing bundles of pace up front, he went on to beat the running on Ballymac Leon, by a length and a half, in 28.05. Cashen Miska and Droopys Dancer also progressed. Hawkfield Ozark, trained by Keely McGee for Jerry Connors, got the better of Kilgraney Sydney in a fantastic battle in race 10. Winning the all important early lead was key and it was the even money favourite Hawkfield Ozark who took them along up front early on. Kilgraney Sydney was trying hard to slip past, but the winner was on top form, winning by two

lengths, in 28.28, with six and a half back to Millridge Dolly in third place. Churchtown Syd, trained by Denis Fitzgerald for owner Mick Crotty, pulled out all the stops in the closing stages to win heat number 11. A strong running type, Churchtown Syd turned close to the pace as Priceless King was setting the early fractions. Finishing best, the 6-4 second favourite Churchtown Syd got up close to home, winning by three quarters of a length from Priceless King, with two lengths back to Footfield Athena in third place.

ROUND TWO

TREBLE FOR HOLLAND

THE second round of the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels took place at Curraheen Park on Saturday night and it was another outstanding night of racing.

Droopys Edison went quickest on the night as the Robert Gleeson-trained star broke the track record, clocking a sensational 27.83 for owners Michael Dunphy and Paul Allen. Breaking well along the inside, the even-money favourite drove a fantastic corner as he slipped around in front from Galloping Sydney. Such a strong and powerful performer, Droopys Edison was in full control heading down the back straight and he pulled further and further clear to land the spoils in great fashion. Clocking incredible finishing sectionals, the most impressive winner came home clear, breaking the previous track of 27.85 which was set by Curious Boy in 2016. Brogan Highway ran on strongly for second, eight and a half lengths back with a further two and a half lengths back to Galloping Sydney in third. Graham Holland enjoyed another wonderful night as the leading trainer landed a brilliant treble. Garryvoe Jot got the second round off to a flying start when winning the opening heat for owner Pat Moloney. The 4-5 favourite produced his best start and once he slipped around in front, it was clear he was on for something special. Showing massive all-round pace, Garryvoe

Joe came home three lengths clear of the running on Ballymac Whispa, in 27.99. Defending champion One Time Only was three lengths back in third. Heat five went the way of Swords Rex for trainer Graham Holland and owner Barbara Lowndes. Sent off an easy-to-back 3-1 shot, Swords Rex had a really tricky draw out in trap five, but he overcame it in great style. Flying into the opening corner, he was in prime position as he turned the opening corners. Serene Ace was showing massive early dash along the inside, but the winner was much the stronger in the closing stages as he went on to win by three lengths, in 27.99. A short head back to Good Cody in third with Bockos Budsit going out of the event in fourth after missing the kick. The Holland treble was completed in the following race as Cryptopunk showed his class for Simon Taylor. Well backed in the ring, the 6-4 market leader flew to the corner from trap five and once he went around in front, it was game over. Strong throughout, he came home four and a half lengths clear of Ballymac Bailey, in 28.19. Two and a half lengths back to Newinn Nifty in third. Russmur Pat recorded five straight wins in heat two. Trained by James O’Regan for Jeremiah Murphy, the 4-5 favourite produced another great start to win the early battle for the lead. Such a strong tracker in front, the inform winner delivered another high-class performance, coming home with eight and a half lengths to spare over Cashen Miska, in 28.28. A short head back to Droopys Rocker in third place. In heat three, Wi Can Dream returned to winning form for trainer Patrick Guilfoyle and Lars and Anita Wicander. The 4-1 shot just had enough early pace to make the corner in front. Kicking on down the back straight, he quickly put the race to bed. A four lengths success from Princeless King, in 28.31, with a length back to Kilcolgan Comet in third place. In the following race, Laughil Roy put on another superb front running winning performance for trainer Michael O’Donovan and owners Mary and Paul Jennings. The even-money favourite showed a lovely touch of early pace and the outcome was never in any doubt. A 28.37 winning run, a length and a half clear of

Jaytee Wexford, with another length and a half back to Slaneyside Jimbo. In heat seven Broadstrand Noah was a very good winner for local trainer Johnny Linehan and owners the Ryan-Drake-Donovan-Syndicate. The 8-1 outsider just made the corner in front, strong at the head of affairs, he clocked impressive finishing sectionals as he beat Millridge Byrce, by three lengths, in 28.26, with Illnotbeback a further four lengths back in third.

QUARTER-FINAL

ANOTHER CLASS PERFORMANCE FROM EDISON

TRACK Record holder Droopys Edison confirmed his status as a leading player for Laurels success after another topclass performance in Curraheen Park on Saturday night. Trained by Robert Gleeson for owners Michael Dunphy and Paul Allen, the 5-4 market leader produced a good start to lead early. Just like last week, he showed massive pace and he pulled right away heading down the back straight. All one way traffic at the head of affairs, Droopys Edison came home nine and a half lengths clear of defending champion One Time Only, who himself ran a big race after early trouble, in 28.11. A short head back to Jaytee Wexford in third place. Swords Rex was another to impress as he took the opening quarter final for trainer Graham Holland and owner Barbara Lowndes. The 4-6 favourite came away racing and he flew around the opening corners in front. Soon clear up front, it was a race against the clock. After some heavy showers, it was clear the track was running slow, but that was not stopping Swords Rex as he won with plenty to spare, in 28.20. Cryptopunk was nine and a half lengths back in second, with a length back to Cashen Miska in third place. It was a magnificent night for trainer Graham Holland and he took the second quarter final with Galloping Sydney who is owned by Una Creed. The well backed 6-4 second choice of

the punters was quickly away and he made full use of the trap one draw. Always in control up front, Galloping Sydney delivered a superb display to land the spoils, in 28.23. Ballymac Whispa was four and a half lengths back in second, with a length back to Priceless King in third place. Heat three went the way of Good Cody for trainer Patrick Guilfoyle and owner John Kennedy Jnr. The even-money winner turned second behind the fast starting Serene Ace. Always towards touching distance, Good Cody proved far too strong in the second half of the race and he went on to win, in 28.34. Kilcolgan Comet ran a cracker for second place, a length and a half back, with three quarters of a length back to Serene Ace in third place.

SEMI-FINALS

DOWN TO THE FINAL SIX

A HUGE crowd gathered at Curraheen Park on Saturday night for the semi-finals of the €30,000 to the winner Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing

Irish Greyhound Laurels.

Backed from 7-1 into 4-1, Ballymac Whispa landed the opening semi final for Liam Dowling. As expected, it was Serene Ace who flew from traps to lead. Favourite Droopys Edison turned second and he looked in prime position but the winner showed incredible pace to go past Droopys Edison on the turns for home. Powering up the home straight, Ballymac Whispa took up the running and she went on to beat the running on Droopys Edison, by two and a half lengths, in 28.15. Serene Ace finished third, just a head behind the runner up. Trainer Graham Holland recorded a 1-2 in the second semi final. It was a bit of an upset with Galloping Sydney winning at odds of 4-1 for owner Una Creed. A stunning performance from the winner who just had enough early dash to slip around in front. Favourite Swords Rex totally missed the kick and he looked in serious trouble. It was all about Galloping Sydney upfront as he caught the eye with big all round pace. A 28.28 winning run, a length and a half clear of Swords Rex, who himself ran a remarkable race to grab second place. Good Cody got third, a length and a half behind the runner up in third.

If, however, he turns again no further attention will be given to him. 2. If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. 3. If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into the traps again.
