While we remain subject to certain restrictions associated with Covid-19 I am delighted that we are in a position to again welcome patrons back to Limerick Greyhound Stadium for this evenings final following an event that was ran completely “behind closed doors” in 2020. I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of the staff here in Limerick in what has been, and will continue to be, a particularly busy period for them, as well as all owners, breeders, trainers and patrons of greyhound racing who continue to support our sport. One of the key priorities of the Board is the continued expansion to the Care and Welfare Programme. As part of this programme we recently launched the Updated Code of Practice. The principal theme of the Code is that the welfare and care of a greyhound must at all times take precedence over the demands of the stakeholders and all those involved in the greyhound industry. I would encourage all to familiarise yourself with the code which is available to view on www.grireland.ie. STORY SO FAR by paul cooney NOW THE concluding classic of the Irish Greyhound Racing season, the Irish St Leger punctuates another wonderful Open campaign on the tracks of Ireland throughout 2021 and having sponsored their classic for the past two seasons, a hard-working patronage on the Dock Road remain ever-proud custodians of Limerick’s historic feature while this year welcoming a wonderful new sponsor for the 2021 Matchbook Betting Exchange Irish St Leger. Matchbook stamp their name on the 89th running of the St Leger and the classic did in fact visit four venues before first held in Limerick. Castle Eve claimed the inaugural event at Celtic Park in Belfast in 1932 as the classic visited Shelbourne Park, Harolds Cross and Clonmel ahead of the first Limerick staging in 1940 when Cherrygrove Cross prevailed at the Markets Field in 31.82. Finding a permanent home at that famed city venue in 1944 when won by No Relation in 31.48 for the 550 yards, the St Leger has been enshrined into greyhound folklore throughout intervening generations. 2021 brings a twelfth renewal at the new Limerick Greyhound Stadium on the Dock Road and recent events have crowned outstanding champions of the sport. Claiming the title in a brilliant final performance twelve months ago, Epic Hero delivered a first St Leger for trainer Thomas O’Donovan. Of course, that victory was denied a raucous reception through Covid-19 restrictions and although our journey through the pandemic remains in search of clear racing room, we can be grateful that at least a share of live support can greet our champion elect this time around.
FIRST ROUND TREBLES FOR BUCKLEY AND HOLLAND
Inundated with high-class entries, 96 hopefuls went to traps for the first round of the St Leger as the regular Thursday fixture housed the opening six heats where trainer Pat Buckley ignited his challenge by claiming a quickfire treble. His Scarty Yank went fastest of the entire round with 29.49 for the 550-yards before Glengar Bale led home Allforthebest in 29.60. The Buckley treble was completed by Irish Derby runner-up Singalong Sally but more informative in terms of future form, she was chased to the line by kennel companion Deerjet Sydney as the former English Derby winner warmed up with a one and a half-length defeat in 29.61. Matching that time when claiming Heat 4 on the
same Thursday card, Liam Dowling’s returning finalist Ballymac Wild commenced yet another classic campaign with victory. Captaining a strong team from the Kingdom kennels, he led Salmic Sunset by over six lengths with a significant qualifying effort from Sweep The Yard in third. If Thursday belonged to Pat Buckley, the Saturday session for Round One saw the kennels of Graham Holland ignite their classic tilt in equally impressive fashion, also securing a treble while introducing a brace of brilliant new racing stars. Fastest of the session, Part Blake inflicted defeat on antepost favourite Explosive Boy when hugely impressive in his one and a half-length verdict while posting a wonderful 29.51. Modest in classic terms, Holland’s Russian Glory posted 29.91 in his one and a half-length defeat of Drahan Jet but that being just a fifth career start for the pup, the victory would serve as a warning of impending improvement from an exciting young talent. Completing a hugely successful Saturday session for the Graham Holland kennels, Monraud Thunder filled the hattrick with his one length defeat of Minaun Flyer in 29.83. Emphasising the strength in depth within a stellar renewal of the classic, newly crowned Irish Laurels champion One Time Only got his campaign off to a flyer when leading Storys Peewee by a length in 29.73 for the defending St Leger winning kennels of Thomas O’Donovan who unfortunately saw reigning champ Epic Hero eliminated when tumbling behind Singalong Sally in the opening Thursday session. Notable amongst the remaining winners in that opening round, Declan McDonagh’s Fast Fit Paddy caught the eye with backstraight pace when a strong running winner in 29.75 while containing fast finisher Beach Avenue.

Glory loudly announced his arrival amongst the elite of racing in Round Two of the St Leger and leading home a double for Graham Holland, went fastest of the event while dominating a stacked Heat 2. Possessing slick early pace, the November 2019 pup led throughout his sixth career start while containing superstar Scooby Princess with five lengths to spare in a brilliant 29.43! That performance would spark a Holland double on the night and also maintaining his unbeaten competition tag with a similarly unexposed profile was fast first round scorer Part Blake. In the hottest heat of the round, he found only a moderate break before exceptional early speed saw him dominate despite a first bend bump and going back-to-back, he stretched clear to a five-length verdict over Bling Bling Paul in 29.61 as classic winners Explosive Boy and One Time Only exited! Winners in the second round came from familiar sources and with Ballymac Wild one of five to go back-to-back in the heats, Liam Dowling registered a double as his returning finalist opened the secondround action with a one and a half length defeat of the eye-catching Allforthebest in a slick 29.47. Completing the Dowling brace, Kirby finalist Ballymac Merlin bounced back to winning ways, overhauling the fast-trapping Boylesportsbingo on the run to the bend for a cosy three length verdict over that rival, warming to his St Leger task in 29.52. The most purposeful challenge at this stage still appeared, however, to lie within the kennels of Pat Buckley as he returned a hattrick of winners for the second round in succession. Remaining unbeaten, Singalong Sally repelled Minor Droopy by three-parts of a length in 29.83 after half-brother Glengar Bale backed up his opening score with an impressive five length defeat of Ballymac Art in a fast 29.49. The most significant of the Buckley trio on the night, however, was Deerjet Sydney’s seven length defeat of Sherriff in 29.60, as the team captain oozed class.
HOLLAND DUO PLAY A BIG PART IN THE QUARTER FINALS
Already producing performances to belie their relative lack of experience, emerging young talents Russian Glory and Part Blake fully announced their arrival on the elite racing scene in the quarterfinals of the St Leger and it was the latter who led the way when producing one of the finest displays of racing excellence ever scene at the Dock Road venue. A September 2019 youngster, Part Blake found his best break of the event in Heat 2 and leading throughout a comfortable four length defeat of Boylesportsbingo, clocked a stunning 29.24 for the classic trip, just three spots outside the track record, as Ballymac Merlin gamely kept his hopes alive in a
qualifying third. Rounding out the quarterfinals, Russian Glory also enhanced his profile greatly for going toe-to-toe with Ballymac Wild, superior dash to the corner saw the November 2019 whelp deny that Liam Dowling star a lead before completing a one and a half length victory in a slick 29.44, with the remarkable finish of Ballyard Taylor closing out the trio. With vastly contrasting levels of experience, Deerjet Sydney remained undaunted by the exploits of those young pretenders and igniting the session from the opening quarterfinal, the Buckley star was a consummate professional while scoring back-toback heat wins. Dominating from his favoured trap 1, he led home the eye-catching Fast Fit Paddy by a length and a half in 29.54 as Allforthebest produced another brilliant staying effort to fill third. Ensuring three runners in the semi-finals, Liam Dowling did claim a quarterfinal victory on the night through his most game Ballymac Art as she resisted the strong finish of Priceless Jet by half a length in 29.66, with Sweep The Yard third.
BEST AND GLORY CLAIM SEMIS
Having produced strong staying qualifying efforts in previous rounds, an improved break from Diana Brody’s Allforthebest saw the Wexford raider claim his first heat win in the St Leger and the hugely consistent, powerful galloper, could well be timing his classic challenge to perfection. Swift to stride from trap 6 in the opening semi, he would find Priceless Jet rushing up on his inside at the bends but recovering a one length halfway deficit, the renowned finishing prowess of Allforthebest saw him back on top close home for a thrilling neck verdict in 29.64. A distance behind that strong running duo, faster early pacers had got it wrong at trap rise and a high-class scramble for places ensued. Last at the second bend, the previously unbeaten youngster Part Blake somehow resurrected his outright hopes when exceptional pace saw him pass three rivals on the backstraight before securing third ahead of Ballymac Wild. The second semi-final was a touch more predictable and keeping his unbeaten record intact, rising star Russian Glory claimed yet another high-profile scalp when forging a one length first bend lead over the duelling Deerjet Sydney and Ballymac Merlin. Extending to his two and a half length winning margin by halfway, Russian Glory maintained a relentless gallop to the line in 29.46 and as Deerjet Sydney checked Ballymac Merlin while securing second at the third bend, we had our final line-up confirmed, with Russian Glory the sole remaining unbeaten runner in the 2021 Matchbook Betting Exchange Irish St Leger.
THE VERDICT: The first thing to say about the 2021 Matchbook Betting Exchange Irish St Leger is that we have found a fascinating final six with a wonderful mix of experience versus emerging stars, early pace against strong staying abilities, and the most crucial aspect to any classic decider, a draw that offers all a sporting chance!
With a sole unbeaten finalist, the natural starting point is Russian Glory in trap 1. A baby in classic terms, he has been consistent and professional beyond his experience and having led to the first bend in all four heat wins, and from varying traps across the track, his path to victory is clear to see. The three most viable contenders for the early lead, on paper at least, are housed in the inside traps however and even with the plumb draw, Russian Glory will have to be sharp at trap rise, especially as all the early movement from those to his right will be towards the rails. That latter assertion is made in relation to Deerjet Sydney who is a confirmed rails runner, and he will seek to move left immediately upon exiting trap 3. If he gets it right, the established star could immediately scupper the chances of the young pretenders to his left while placing himself in prime position for victory. However, the approach here is to select the likeliest scenario and just like last week when racing from the same trap 3 box, Deerjet Sydney may not fully reach top stride until occupying the rail and given the task he has to lead the runners to his left, even his astounding backstraight pace may not recover ground lost following likely early crowding. Clearly a pitch on the immediate left of Deerjet Sydney is far from optimum for Part Blake having produced his worst start of the event from this same trap 2 last week. However, Part Blake remains the fastest of the competition and his stunning 29.24 at quarterfinal stage suggests that he can convert if securing clear passage. To do that, he must firstly break better than last week, and at least well enough to dissuade Deerjet Sydney from a determined move towards the rail. Should he match his kennel companion in the early strides and reach the corner while disputing
the lead, the backstraight pace Part Blake showed when recovering from sixth place last week would surely be enough to win and whatever happens in the final, he will remain one of the most exciting prospects ahead of the 2022 classic season. However, at the likely short odds, in the position he is in now from this draw, against these rivals, it is difficult to recommend parting with the dough. One that’s less difficult to recommend a punt on at more generous odds is Ballymac Merlin, for the make up of the draw is as appealing as any for the Liam Dowling challenger. His strike-rate is a natural concern with just three race victories, but his career is contested amongst the very best and being largely even paced at 550-yards, he invariably races in close quarters with talented rivals. That said, a draw on the right-hand side of Deerjet Sydney means that racing room is there for the taking if Ballymac Merlin can repel the strong running duo to his outer for clear sight of the hare at the opening turns. He can edge to the left himself, but the possibility of bumping to his inside does offer hope that he can be with the leaders around the opening bends and his backstraight pace would bring claims of victory thereafter. The strongest finishers in the final are again drawn side-by-side in the outside traps and having dominated their semi-final when early paced railers got it wrong, a repeat is not beyond the realms of possibility for Allforthebest and Priceless Jet. The latter did gain track position with superior early dash last time and Allforthebest would need to repeat his fast start, but whichever reaches the backstraight ahead of the other, can have a say with a certain big finish, if indeed the inside runners become embroiled in bumping. However, having each enjoyed a pleasing passage last time, the clock says that they have something to find. Overall, the selection is Russian Glory, in this scenario; An adept break can see him lead on the inside while Part Blake and Deerjet Sydney rub shoulders, allowing Russian Glory to forge a crucial first bend lead. On the outside of a three-way go for second approaching the bend, Ballymac Merlin can squeeze around the outer for a dispute of the forecast place with Part Blake to the backstraight as Deerjet Sydney suffers crowding. With too many talented rivals battling for position in behind, Russian Glory posts another time in the 29.40’s, which can’t be caught. One in a myriad of scenarios for an open St Leger final. Good luck to all runners!

Our youngest finalist, Justin & Pat Muldoon’s Russian Glory arrived at Limerick with just four races under his belt in a fledgling racing career. A modest opening victory in classic terms was quickly improved upon and the Graham Holland starlet now stands alone as the sole unbeaten St Leger runner. Developing a wonderful consistency over recent weeks, his rails draw looks ideal for clear passage, especially if his neighbouring kennelmate can prove a shield from the rail seeking Deerjet Sydney. Big, big chance!

PART BLAKE
Una Creed & Mary O’Connor’s Part Blake had not yet reached the top rung on the grading ladder before entering the 1st round of the St Leger but making an immediate impact while accounting for exalted rivals in those early heats, the second Graham Holland finalist took his form to yet greater heights when giving the track record a real scare, posting a sublime 29.24. Revealing brave battling qualities in addition to his pace, last week’s third was equal in merit to anything he has produced. A worthy favourite, but his draw is tricky, PROBABLE SP: 13/8 and he simply must trap better than last time.
DEERJET SYDNEY
A true superstar of racing, Kenny Glen’s Deerjet Sydney has nothing left to prove amongst the elite of racing, but the 2020 English Derby champion remains as good as ever and hungry for further classic success. Second to Trap 1 last week, his previous brace of heat wins brings every chance for victory but certain to seek the rails, he will need to out-break the young pretenders to his left now. Been there, done it, and may do again!

BALLYMAC MERLIN
Although registering just a sole heat win, Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Merlin has plotted a classy passage through the St Leger while confirming his suitability to the Limerick circuit following his run to the final of the Kirby Memorial in the early season. His second round 29.52 was from the very top drawer and he should not be dismissed for his latest defeat, for that was a brilliant battling display through repeated bumping. He must turn with the pace for win claims, but this draw looks appealing, and he is attractive in the PROBABLE SP: 15/2 market, with a viable claim for victory.

Established as one of the most consistent stalwarts of elite racing with his powerful galloping style, Allforthebest has been on a progressive upward career path for the H-D-J Syndicate and Diana Brody since last seen at Limerick in the Kirby Memorial. Advancing to a first heat win in his defeat of Priceless Jet last time, he is certain to do his best work from halfway and is the one rival that any prospective leader does not want on their tail. He must repeat his latest smart break for win claims but expect another PROBABLE SP: 9/1 powerful late challenge.

A semi-finalist in the St Leger last season, Bryan & Kathleen Murphy’s Priceless Jet has gone one step further this year with a progressive passage to the final, suffering only narrow defeats the last twice. Reaching a Derby semi-final following his Corn Cuchulainn success, a wonderful season sees the Paul Hennessy charge with outside claims now but with a powerful finish to match any, his ideal draw could deliver a precious clear passage.

Declaration of a ‘NO RACE’ The stewards may declare a ‘No Race’ only in the following circumstances: (1) Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interference with the race, or (2) If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare, or (3) If for any other reason all dogs fail to pursue the hare. Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference. Unauthorised photography in this stadium is strictly prohibited. If through any cause the meeting has to be abandoned before the start of the Fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded. Greyhounds Turning in Traps: (a) If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion that greyhound will be taken out and and righted. If, however, he turns again no further attention will be given to him. (b) If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. (c) If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate then all the dogs should be taken out and be re-examined before they are put into traps again. Computerised Trap Draw made at Greyhound Racing Ireland. Kennel area strictly out of bounds to all except owners, trainers, and officials. IF GREYHOUNDS HAVE TO BE WITHDRAWN, OWNERS ARE REQUESTED TO DO SO BEFORE THEY APPEAR ON THE RACE CARD.
