CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME A Chairde, On behalf of Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) I am delighted to welcome all those in attendance and watching the action on RPGTV to the final of the 2021 Irish Greyhound Laurels kindly sponsored by the Friends and Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing. While we remain subject to certain restrictions associated with Covid-19 I am pleased that we are in a position to again welcome patrons back to Curraheen Park following an event that was ran “behind closed doors” in 2020. The past 20 months has been challenging for the country as a whole as we navigate through a once in a century event and I would like to thank you for you continued cooperation with the necessary protocols that were introduced so that public health guidelines are fully respected. I want to take this opportunity to once again salute and thank The Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing for their continued sponsorship. This is the third year of an incredible five-year commitment and is deeply appreciated by all involved in the sport. Additionally, I want to thank all who have been involved in organising the event particularly the team at Curraheen Park and the staff of RCÉ. I want to also acknowledge the ongoing support of government and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, in the allocation of €17.6M from the Horse & Greyhound Fund in 2022, which was confirmed in last weeks budget. The allocation will assist with the continued significant expansion of a range of care and welfare initiatives during 2022 and assist with the commercial challenges as the industry recovers from the impact of restrictions experienced during the pandemic.

PATH TO THE FINAL OPENING ROUND
SKYWALKER BARRY set the scene for a brilliant opening round to the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Laurels with a trap-to-line victory in the opening heat at Curraheen Park. The Mark O’Donovan-trained dog flew from trap one to take control and was some six lengths clear turning into the back. Stretching out powerfully, he put 16 lengths between himself and runner-up Livingonachair, in 28.19. Last year’s winning trainer Johnny Linehan got off the mark for this year’s renewal when Broadstrand Ryan overcame a tough draw to win heat two in 28.63. Derby runner-up Singalong Sally proved to be in a league of her own in heat three. Pat Buckley’s bitch broke best from her inside box and put in a top-class display to post 28.20. There isn’t much left to say about Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Wild that hasn’t already been said, and he took a positive first step towards another anticipated deep run into a classic with a 28.19 run in heat four. Pennylane Sheba showed a lovely touch of early pace to take control of heat five and Niamh McKenna’s bitch remained clear all the way to win in 28.41. Cork and Munster Oaks winner Clona Skye led a Graham Holland one-two in the sixth heat. Early pace is her forte and she duly led all the way in 28.43, with Sweep The Yard showing customary late dash to take second place. Epic News impressed with his early dash in heat seven. Maria Kennedy’s dog moved clear early and ran on just as well to win in 28.35. Edel Twomey’s Witches Ethiopia, a final-

ist here last year, made a winning start to her2021 bid with an all-the-way victory in heat eight, in 28.46. Graham Holland had the first three home in heat nine and it was Rural Star, who posted 27.94 last weekend in Shelbourne, who earned the Holland kennel bragging rights. He wasn’t that well away but showed great pace and determination to collar Newinn Sheedy close home for a 29.05 win, with Romeo Magico in third. Shortly after sending out Feora Chris to win a second round heat of the Juvenile Derby in 28.12 at Shelbourne, Con Guiney completed an across-the-cards double when Jacob Tashadelek tracked the last two bends of heat 10 superbly to fly by Droopys Good for a three-and-a-half-length victory in 28.52. Kieran Lynch, who won two of the last three renewals of the Laurels, took heat 11 with Tracton Tornado who led all the way to win in 28.46. Pat Buckley doubled up in the heats when Coom Leo made all in the finale. His 3.25 sectional was the fastest of the night, and he remained clear to post 28.33.
ROUND TWO
SKYWALKER Barry set the standard in round two of the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels. The Mark O’Donovan-trained dog once flew from the trap one box, producing an outstanding 3.20 sectional. Owned by Ray Patterson, the winner was sent off the wellfancied 1-2 favourite. Droopys Good was hot on his heels heading into the opening turn, but the one in front opened up heading
down the back straight, moving two lengths clear to the third corner. Keeping on well on the run home, Skywalker Barry ran out a three and a half-length winner from Droopys Good, in the quickest of the night, 28.18. Burgess Mossy two and a half lengths behind the runner-up in third. Supported from 2-1 into 6-4 for the opening heat, the brilliant Ballymac Wild delivered another stunning performance for trainer Liam Dowling. Once he won the early lead, the race was over as a contest. Showing bundles of pace up front, he ran out a four and a half-length winner, in 28.23. It was a one-two for team Ballymac as Fairone ran on well for second after another sluggish start. Ballyelan Rolly running on well for the all-important third-place finish, two and a half lengths behind the runner-up. Trainer Graham Holland was on double form, Romeo Magico the first to oblige in the second heat, winning for owner David Firmager. Sent off the 2-1 second choice of the punters, the winner had to settle for second best early as Drahan Jet set the early fractions. Getting a dream run along the inside heading down the back straight, Romeo Magico took up the running before the third corner. That really was the winning of the race and at the line, a length and a half separated the front two. A further four lengths back to Glengar Bale in third. (28.28). Holland’s double was completed in heat seven, Knight Tornado landing the spoils for owner Larry Dunne. Broadstrand Sam was in control heading around the opening corners, but it all changed at the third corner when the one in front went backwards. Knight Tornado quickly took over, taking full advantage, he ran on well to the line. A length and a half clear of the fast-finishing Brogan Highway, with just half a length back to the staying on Hello Hammond. A 28.58 winning run from the 5-1 winner. The Singalong Sally love story continued in heat three, Pat Buckley’s star performer putting on another stunning display. Gilbert An-
derson’s runner was sent off the 1-2 favourite and punters who took the short odds never really had a moments worry. Bolting from traps, she sailed around the opening turns in front. Buckley’s other runner Coom Leo did show plenty of pace, but it was back-toback wins around the Cork venue for Singalong Sally. A two-length victory, in 28.33, with a length back to Rahale Podge is third.
QUARTER-FINAL
BALLYMAC FAIRONE returned to top form in the opening quarter-final of the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels at Curraheen Park on Saturday night. Skywalker Barry was sent off as the shortpriced favourite, but he didn’t show his usual big early pace and it was evident from a very early stage that he was in serious trouble. Liam Dowling’s winner, the 6-4 second choice of the punters, broke well and he showed lovely dash along the inside to lead into the opening turn. In full flight heading down the back straight, the leader pulled around five clear of Skywalker Barry to the second last turn. In fairness to the runnerup, he never gave up and he did reduce the lead to three lengths at the line, a fine performance from the front two and the same can be said about the third, Brogan Highway, the big local runner coming from last to grab third, just a short head clear of Ballyelan Rolly, in 28.25. Next best on the clock was Lynch Boy, TJ Campion’s runner causing a bit of an upset in the third heat. A 6-1 shot in the ring, he was drawn for a big run, but it looked like a red-hot event on paper. However, Lynchy Boy produced his best-ever start and he delivered the performance of his life to land the spoils. Flying from traps, he led around the opening corners and the talented tracker kept finding in front. Such a consistent and classy tracker, he went on to beat Sweep The Yard, who himself delivered a superb performance to grab second, three lengths behind
the winner, in 28.42. Droopys Good missed the kick, but he ran well for third, after he had sat second for most of the journey, just a head behind Sweep The Yard in that allimportant third place. In the final heat, trainer Graham Holland had three of the six runners and he would have been happy with the result, a onetwo for the Golden-based trainer. Knight Tornado, a 7-1 outsider, recording back-toback wins in the event. Quickest from traps, he went on to make every yard of the running for owner Larry Dunne. Romeo Magico made a mess of the start, but he did show huge gears in defeat. Three lengths separated the front two, in 28.44, with a length back to Drahan Jet in third place. Last year’s Leger winner Epic Hero ran out a brave winner of the second heat, making it a first and third for trainer Thomas O’Donovan. One Time Only set the early fractions, but Epic Hero, a 3-1 chance in the betting ring, took over soon after the second corner. Quickly moving around two lengths clear, the race looked all over as a contest. Ballymac Wild was poorly away this week, but he ran a cracker in defeat, showing plenty of staying power, he ended up getting
within half a length of the leader, in 28.55. Three and a half lengths behind the runnerup in third was One Time Only.
SEMI-FINALS
THOMAS O’DONOVAN was the happiest man leaving Cork on Saturday night as the Golden-based trainer sent two greyhounds into the final of the Friends & Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing Irish Greyhound Laurels which will take place next Saturday night. One Time Only, trained by Thomas O’Donovan for owners Paul Horig and John Woodford, caused a 12-1 upset in the second semi-final. All eyes were on ante-post favourite for outright glory Skywalker Barry, but it was One Time Only who broke best to lead early doors. There was no fluke about the winning run and in truth, Skywalker Barry held every chance as he was on terms at the opening bend. Quickest down the back straight, One Time Only kicked a length and a half clear to the third corner as Droppys Good came alongside Skywalker Barry in behind. Maintaining the strong gallop, One Time Only kept on powerfully to land the spoils, three and a half lengths clear of Skywalker Barry, who himself was a length and a half clear of Droopys Good, in 28.33.

Possibly the best-drawn dog in the final, that’s if he produces one of his quickest starts. Caught the eye in the early rounds of the Irish Greyhound Derby, but a bit below that in recent outings. Leading early is key and the talented tracker will no doubt have plenty of supporters. His best performance came in round two and he will need to return to his very best form. Can he make all the running?

Went off favourite for the English Greyhound Derby earlier this year and he’s likely to go off favourite for the Laurels final. Made the most of the trouble at the opening corner to win last week, in 28.58. He set the standard the previous week, winning in 28.25. Trapping is a slight concern and he will need to be quick to clear his inside runners. A real talent and if he hits it, he will take some catching.

Second of two runners for trainer Thomas O’Donovan. No stranger to big runs around the country and he took Limerick’s big prize last year, winning the Irish St Leger. Lacks a small touch of early pace, but he has won two of the opening four rounds. Would prefer an inside draw, but the strong running tracker could take advantage of any trouble at the opening bend. Could reach the frame.

One of the leading fancies throughout the event. A winner of the Juvenile Derby, Select Stakes and the Clona Blaze @ Stud Open 525 around course and distance. Impressed in earlier rounds, but a shade disappointing the last twice. Draw is far from ideal, but on a going night, he has the early gears to dominate from start to finish. He would take some beating from the front but leading early is a must.

Ultra consistent sort who seldom runs a bad race. Reached the semi-finals last year, but into the main event this time around after delivering plenty of top-class performances in defeat. Five seconds in a row and the draw is far from ideal. However, he has overcome wide draws in the past and if there’s any trouble on the inside he could well take advantage. The outsider of the field but could well outrun those odds.

Where there is mechanical or other defect of the hare equipment or starting box or any outside interferences with the race, or 2. If any of the dogs fight, and as a consequence, all fail to pursue the hare, or 3. If for any other reason all dogs fail to pursue the hare Note: A greyhound turning back in a race does not constitute outside interference.

If through any cause the meeting has to be abandoned before the start of the Fourth Race, pass out tickets will be issued, but, under no circumstances, will admission money be refunded. Greyhounds Turning in Traps: 1. If a greyhound turns before the hare is put in motion that greyhound will be taken out and righted. If, however, he turns again no further attention will be given to him. 2. If a greyhound turns while the hare is in motion the hare should not be stopped and the traps should be released. 3. If the hare passes the traps and for any reason the traps do not operate then all the dogs should be taken out and re-examined before they are put into the traps again.
