To this effect, the GCC community responded admirably to address the COVID-19 pandemic by working together to mitigate health and safety concerns, advance technological capacity, and transition to remote work. Faculty converted in-person instruction to distance delivery and staff adapted student service, facility, technology and business delivery methods. Determination, responsiveness and ingenuity were necessary to make these changes occur on an accelerated timeline. Through this experience, GCC maintained primary services to students and sought opportunities to improve institutional effectiveness, even during a time of great crisis.
Below is a short list of additional highlights over the year for which we are proud to have accomplished: • GCC held the first virtual graduation ceremony in GCC’s 89-year history. • Strategic agenda visioning led to the creation of the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan, with implementation at an astounding 89% participation rate from faculty and staff. • The college honored and highlighted Martin Luther King Jr. Day by gathering videos of staff, students, board, and community members reciting Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech for social media production. • Language Arts and Social Science faculty integrated Diversity Matters Community Reading Group topics in their Black Literature and African-American History courses. • In cooperation with Workforce Development and the Allied Health department, GCC implemented the Certified Nursing Assistant Academy at the Cooper Country Center in an effort to train and place front line workers in necessary health care roles. • The Foundation awarded over $150,000 in scholarship dollars to students attending GCC. • GCC was awarded the Michigan Partnership for Academic Transitions grant. Areas of focus include college transition for high school seniors, placement testing, and developmental math courses to bridge student success gaps. • An institution-wide, comprehensive Zoom technology software was implemented to serve the needs of distance education and remote communication. • GCC was the recipient of a $1.5 million 2020-2025 TRIO Student Support Services grant. • Gogebic Community College was ranked #4 as best online community colleges in Michigan for 2020. • 560 pounds of plastic film was collected and recycled as part of the Trex Film Recycle Challenge. • STEM faculty developed and participated in student engagement activities aligned with the Xcel Energy grant first to second year retention scholarship. • The college received Silver-Level Veteran-Friendly School status from the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency. • The GCC Esports program produced and participated in the NJCAA Esports National Championships. • Over $618,000 of CARES Act federal stimulus dollars were distributed to students.

Foundation Board of Directors The Gogebic Community College Foundation was established in 1977 to promote, encourage, aid and support the College by receiving and investing monies to fulfill the needs of the College which cannot or are not easily met by State and local tax revenue. The Foundation is supervised by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated and involved community leaders and is a 501©(3) tax exempt organization.

on Aug. 1, 2020. A member of the Foundation Board since 2000, Charlene served as President from 2010-2020. She served on several committees and was instrumental in the planning and success of Foundation fundraising events. Charlene, a GCC Alum and retired teacher, had an unsurpassed passion for helping others and was generous with her time and talents to support the GCC Foundation and our students. She always had the best interest of the students at heart and looked for ways to improve the student experience at GCC. Her closing remarks at our annual Celebration of Achievements Banquet were always highly anticipated and well-received.
MARY (GENTILE) PAOLI passed away on Dec. 28, 2020. A member of the Foundation Board from 1983-2017, Mary was a past Vice President. She also served on the Capital Drive Committee, ‘Building Our Future Together’ that raised over $500,000 to build a new student center on campus. Groundbreaking for this new building took place on May 26, 1992, and the David G. Lindquist Student Center was dedicated on October 15, 1993. In 2005, Mary and Dr. Ernest Dear established the first annual Pine-to-Palm Pasty Picnic in Florida as a way to reconnect friends and alumni that winter in Florida and stay connected to their Upper Peninsula college. Mary continued to host this picnic in her winter residence, Bradenton, Florida, with the help of other past GCC Foundation Board Members for more than ten years. P–5

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Gogebic Community College successfully rolled out the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan implementation in October 2020. The College has 89% employee participation serving on teams to fulfill the goals of the plan. The staff and faculty of GCC are committed to the college and moving the college forward!

Establishing a scholarship fund with the Gogebic Community College Foundation helps to improve the educational opportunities available to our students. Approximately 70% of GCC students qualify for financial assistance, making scholarships vitally important to the achievement of their education goals. Together we can make a positive difference in their lives. There are three types of scholarships the Foundation administers including Endowed/Perpetual Scholarships, Annual Scholarships and One-time Memorial or Honorary Scholarships. Gifts of any amount, at any time, are greatly appreciated and can be added to the general scholarship fund. Jeanne Graham Retires from GCC Many of you will remember Jeanne Graham, Vice President of Student Services, from your time on the campus at GCC or at GCC events and athletic games. Jeanne began her employment at GCC in 1991 as the admissions and housing coordinator and 29 years later has retired as the VP of Student Services. Jeanne has always been supportive of GCC sponsored events, supporting the Foundation and being a consistent presence and supporter of GCC athletics. “Her dedication to student success has been clearly demonstrated and continued to be her top priority throughout her career,” stated GCC President Dr. George McNulty. Jeanne has said that the greatest parts of her job were working with students – helping them overcome challenges as well as celebrating their accomplishments. She was always available to students and spent countless hours meeting with students one-on-one and helping them to achieve academic success. She will be missed on the Ironwood campus, but don’t be surprised if you see her at a Samson game cheering on the home team! We wish her the best in her retirement and truly appreciate all of her dedication to GCC.

GCC Esports Team in National Championship! Gogebic Community College’s Rainbow 6 Siege Esports team landed a playoff berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) National Championship tournament. Members of the Rainbow 6 Siege team included: Keegan “Dezify” Bolen, Captain, James “ProJades” Dickerson, Carson “Cypher” Johnson, Jaidon “Jaidon906” Jokela, Leandro “ImLucid” Narvaez and Cody “MusicNerd35” Schwartz. possible through the partnership between GCC and the NJCAAE, the college’s information technology infrastructure and expertise of Coach Jim Halverson and Volunteer Assistant Aaron Froelich, Manager of Campus Suites. Froelich’s responsibilities also include broadcast and media production and our main Caster talent. Esports at GCC, under the leadership of Jim Halverson, Computer Information Technology Instructor, began in 2017. “Jim has built the program from the ground up. He is a member of the NJCAA Esports Advisory Committee along with five other coaches from across the U.S. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to be part of advancing this emerging collegiate sport. We are proud of the GCC Esports program and the student-athletes who are participating in the national championship playoffs,”
The Samsons ranked number three among the 64-member colleges in the leagues and earned a spot in the National Championship playoffs. Two Samsons Esports Fortnite players were invited to the National NJCAAE Fortnite Invitational held in December, 2020. Aaron “Akay” Hoff finished 14th and Selena “Loveseit” Dix finished 31st. They competed every week of the season and demonstrated great sportsmanship through the tournament. “I’m very proud of our Fortnite players and look forward to next season,” said Coach Halverson. The NJCAAE was founded in 2019 and is the only national esports association exclusively for two-year colleges according to the generation sports website. It already has over 60-member schools after only two semesters of competition.

Diversity Initiatives at GCC This Spring, Gogebic Community College is offering brand new courses in African American History and Black Literature. Dr. Allyson Stanton’s course in African American History focuses on both the history of blacks in America – major events and characters in the American story, and also the lived experience. For example, some of the questions confronted are how humans survived as slaves, ways in which they resisted their bonds, and how black families raised children to survive in a segregationist nation without believing themselves to be a member of an inferior race. The ultimate aim is to help students better understand how this often ugly past continues to inform the United States and its citizens in the present.
Dr. Jason Shrontz’s course in Black Literature examines the literary and cultural contributions of black writers and artists from the 19th century to the present day through written, oral, and visual forms of expression, including poetry, fiction, drama, nonfiction, film, and music. The goal of the course is to develop a deeper understanding of the literary expressions of black experiences in America, the political, social, and economic forces that have shaped them, and the artistic movements that have formed around them. Dr. Stanton and Dr. Shrontz, as well as other members of the GCC community, have also teamed up with the Diversity Matters Reading Group, which is a local, community-led initiative to engage with issues of diversity through reading and discussion. While the goal of the group is to explore a broad range of diversity, this Spring they are focusing on Black culture. The group will study texts that are also being taught in the African American History and Black Literature courses, and Dr. Stanton and Dr. Shrontz’s will lead these discussions.
Gogebic Community College is one of 13 organizations to receive money from the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) in its 12th round of COVID-19 Response Grants in Michigan.
With this round of grants, MCAN has surpassed a half million dollars invested across Michigan to help high schools, Local College Access Networks, community-based nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions support emergent postsecondary projects and programs in their communities. MCAN is partnering with other funders to co-sponsor these grants. Gogebic Community College (GCC) is awarded $9,916 to improve the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion rates in its service areas through online and in-person events, as well as an advertising campaign that includes social media, posters in high schools, and direct mail materials. The grants were announced by MCAN in early April 2020 to demonstrate MCAN’s responsiveness to and support of communities affected by the global health pandemic that continues to have a major impact in Michigan, predominantly in minority communities MCAN serves. “Since April, MCAN has taken on the responsibility of funding impactful postsecondary attainment initiatives across the state of Michigan,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, executive director of MCAN. “The global health pandemic has disproportionately affected populations traditionally prevented from accessing higher education, including low-income students, first-generation collegegoing students and students of color. I’m proud that we have the capacity to rapidly mobilize resources and act as a support to schools and organizations.” “During these financially difficult times, it is more critical than ever that students and their families are aware of federal, state, and local college access resources. With the MCAN grant, we will be able to educate students and families throughout Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula about the financial aid options available to them. Our presentations and information will be relevant for all students entering college in 2021-22, not just those planning to attend Gogebic Community College,” said Marc Madigan, GCC Director of Financial Aid.

Gogebic Community College announces support for Michigan’s new Reconnect program, which offers eligible adults free or reduced tuition.
Workforce Development Gogebic Community College’s Workforce Development (WFD) continues
Gogebic Community College announced today that it will serve as a Champion to support the Michigan Reconnect program unveiled Tuesday, Feb. 2, in Lansing by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in an effort to help address a widening skills gap within the state’s workforce. Hundreds of leading Michigan businesses, community and legislative leaders say Reconnect is exactly what state employers need to alleviate the shortage of highly skilled and capable workers. “We believe Michigan Reconnect will not only help individuals and families pursue their dreams, but it will also help build a strong economy that requires a talented and modern workforce to compete for the jobs of the future,” said Dr. George McNulty, GCC President. As a Champion, GCC has committed to spreading the word about the opportunity Michigan Reconnect is providing for eligible adults locally and statewide. In order to be eligible for Michigan Reconnect, adults must meet the following criteria:
• Age 25 or older • High school graduate or equivalent • Michigan resident for at least one year • Not yet completed a college degree (associate or bachelor’s)
Michigan Reconnect will help pay the costs of tuition for eligible adults who live in Gogebic County and want to pursue an associate degree. For those adult students living outside of Gogebic County, but in Michigan, Reconnect will only pay the in-district part of the tuition so the student is responsible for the remaining balance. For students who receive other state or federal grant aid, Reconnect will cover remaining eligible expenses that aren’t paid for by other programs like Pell, Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) or other state tuition awards. As of 2019, only 42% of Michigan’s working-age residents had an associate degree or higher. A 2020 analysis by the American Association of Community Colleges reported the median earnings of full-time employees with a high school degree is $40,510 annually, while those with an associate degree make $50,079 per year, based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Michigan employers’ ability to find highly skilled employees is more difficult than ever and is cited as a top concern in the most recent Michigan Future Business Index Report. Michigan Reconnect will help address the dual challenges of the state’s widening talent gap and aging workforce. “We encourage area residents who want to secure their future by pursuing a satisfying, in-demand career to take advantage of what Michigan Reconnect is offering,” said Dr. McNulty. The work is focused primarily on offering professional development opportunities for our workforce, developing talent pipelines for our employers, and working with our community to engage under employed or unemployed individuals. WFD has established a number of customized trainings in Quality Improvement and Risk Management for local employers. We hope to see summer youth programs return this year to help local youth explore careers in their own backyards. WFD has also partnered with Michigan Technological University’s Tomorrow’s Talent Series (bit.ly/TomorrowsTalentSeries) to highlight local employers and careers via short “a-day-in-the-life” videos. Leveraging partnerships with the Gogebic Ontonagon Intermediate School District and Western UP MiStem network, WFD is working directly with local teachers to help them better understand the opportunities available within a few miles of where they go to school. Gogebic Community College’s CARES Act Grant Provides Relief Aid to Students

On April 14th, 2020, Gogebic Community College received a grant through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. In the legislation for the act, one of the main purposes of the funding is described as “providing emergency financial aid grants to students for their expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.”

“We wanted to reach as many students as we could,” said Financial Aid Director, Marc Madigan. “We decided to split the difference between distributing the funds equally and targeting the students who were most in need of emergency aid. In the summer and fall semesters, we automatically awarded every eligible student who had completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who had additional need for COVID-19 related aid beyond that also had the option to apply for supplementary funds.” GCC plans to follow a similar methodology for awarding new funds in the 2021 calendar year. All eligible students will still receive an award. Students are required to complete a FAFSA in order to be eligible to receive any form of COVID-19 emergency relief aid from GCC. Award amounts will be based on part-time vs. full-time enrollment and eligibility for federal Pell grants. GCC students can find the application for additional aid at gogebic.edu/financial_aid/.

Carroll, of L’Anse, holds an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Michigan Technological University. She served as the Staff Development Coordinator at Bayfield Village which included Nurse Aide Staff training Certification. She also brought almost 38 years of full-time nursing experience to GCC.
JACQUELINE FRANZOI, CAREER COUNSELOR Franzoi, of Hurley, holds a Bachelor of Social Work degree from UW-Oshkosh and a Master of Science in School Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Since 2016, Franzoi served as the K-12 School Counselor at the Prentice School District in Prentice, Wisconsin. She has also worked as a Case Manager and Youth Mentor for the Iron County Human Services.
JOSEPH MUTTER, SUPERVISOR FOR MT. ZION Mutter, formerly of Rhinelander, WI, received an Associate’s Degree in Ski Area Management from GCC in 2017. His experience in ski operations includes work at Jackson Hole in Wyoming, Copper Mountain in Colorado, and Mt. Zion in Ironwood.
KRISTIN KENNEY, REGISTRAR Kenney of Victoria, Texas holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Baldwin Wallace College in Iowa. She previously served as the Assistant Registrar at University of Houston-Victoria, where she also served as an Admissions Analyst.

HUI-LING (KELLY) WU, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN Dr. Wu, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the National Cheng Kung University and a Master of Science Degree in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a PhD in Educational Technology from Texas A&M University. Dr. Wu has extensively engaged in instructional design, instructional technology and innovation for more than 10 years.
TARA TREGEMBO, PSYCHOLOGY INSTRUCTOR Tregembo, of Ironwood, a GCC alum, holds a Graduate Certificate from Appalachian State University, a Master of Science Degree from Walden University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern Michigan University. She was recommended for the position based on her interviews, presentation and experience with GCC. Tregembo has served as the Transfer Coordinator/ Assistant Registrar/Veterans Services since 2018 advising students and assisting with degree completion. Prior to that, she served as the TRiO Coordinator for five years.

TRiO Student Support Services Gets Creative This Fall BY JESSICA LEINON-NOVASCONE, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES TRiO Student Support Services staff had to be creative during the fall semester in order to promote student engagement, during a time when social distancing and online learning was more prevalent than ever. Without the ability to host traditional workshops, campus visits and other cultural events, staff utilized various safety measures and technologies to engage students.

Gogebic Community College Gives Back The GCC Community decided to celebrate the season by giving back to a local organization this year. A giving tree was established in the President’s office at the college with tags of items needed for the DOVE, Inc. shelter.
TRiO coordinator, Kris Michel, collaborated with various universities such as Northern Michigan University, Michigan Technological University, and Grand Valley State University to hold virtual transfer visits. An online Careers and Life Skills course was developed in which job interviews with students were held via Zoom. Students were able to explore various careers remotely using Virtual Job Shadow. Career Counselor, Jackie Franzoi, also held career counseling sessions via Zoom. Tutoring sessions were also held online. TRiO Director, Jessica Leinon-Novascone and TRiO Assistant, Angie Mazurek, conducted outreach and advising sessions through email, phone calls, and Zoom. In-person activities were also held when allowed, such as a paint class with Ann Marie Batiste
and a blanket making class. Students got together with TRiO staff via Zoom at the end of the semester to celebrate the holidays and participate in a gingerbread-making contest. Students also enjoyed virtual trivia nights. Student engagement is critical to student success, especially when students are facing additional stressors and barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic. TRiO staff plan to continue providing students with unique and engaging opportunities including implementing a robotics course in the spring.
Student Support Services (SSS) is a 100% federally funded TRiO program authorized by the U.S. Department of Education. Each year, the SSS program at Gogebic Community College is awarded money to provide access and support to 160 students. In order to be eligible for the SSS program, students must meet one or more of the following criteria:1st generation college student, meet taxable income guidelines, or have a documented disability.

We really just wanted to do our part and make a positive impact in the community,” said Kari Klemme, Administrative Assistant to the President. Items purchased by the faculty and staff included: winter gear, clothing, toys, toiletries, board games and approximately $450 in gift cards to local businesses. The DOVE, Inc. staff were thrilled and overjoyed to see the amazing support from GCC. “The staff at DOVE, Inc., and those we provide services to want to send our heartfelt thanks to all the faculty and staff at Gogebic Community College for their time, effort, and kindness. Jackson Earns Five-Star Status IRONWOOD, Mich. — Gogebic Community College Director of Student Outreach and Engagement and Phi Theta Kappa Advisor, Dayle Jackson, recently earned special recognition from an international academic honor society. Jackson was named a five-star advisor for Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK), Alpha Rho Chi chapter at GCC. PTK provides the Five-Star Advisor designation to chapter advisors who successfully complete distinct advisor training requirements developed by PTK to support chapter advisors in their work. To earn five-star status, advisors must complete a five-level curriculum that includes modules in communications, leadership, service learning, student success and building collaborative partnerships.

Three regional employers have purchased training seats through the academy, and six training sessions were offered to the community between May and December 2020. Variable training schedules (afternoon, evening and weekends) were offered to meet the needs of the different demographic groups being served. The equipment provided training stations that allowed students to practice skills prior to the clinical experience. The talent pipeline is beginning to stabilize despite significant limitations from the pandemic: 46 students have either completed the program or are currently enrolled, and 35 applicants are working to satisfy the requirements to enroll in the course.

The information learned will assist me in helping our members impact our campus and community through the four PTK pillars of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship, said Jackson.” Jackson’s achievement will be recognized at the honor society’s annual convention in April 2021. To be eligible for active membership in Phi Theta Kappa, a student must meet the following requirements, (1) complete at least 12 hours of work in courses leading to an Associate degree at Gogebic Community College; (2) cumulative GPA must be 3.5 or better; (3) must adhere to the school conduct code and possess recognized qualities of good citizenship; and (4) must be currently enrolled at GCC. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has a presence on almost 1,300 community college campuses in 11 nations.

In 2020, the Superior Health Foundation awarded Gogebic Community College, in Ironwood, a $2,500 Equipment Fund grant to purchase manikins for the Upper Peninsula Certified Nurses Assistants (CNA) Academy.

GCC Holds Groundbreaking on New Skilled Trades Facility Gogebic Community College (GCC) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the new Skilled Trades Facility on Midland Avenue in Ironwood. This new facility will help to improve and increase the skilled trades offerings in this region.

To kick off the project, GCC engaged the services of U.P. Engineers and Architects (UPEA) to design and bid out the remodel of this building. In June, the Board of Trustees approved and awarded the construction bid for the renovation of this facility to Nasi Construction of Hurley, WI. The grant funds for the remodel were secured through the State of Michigan thanks to the efforts of Former State Senator, Tom Casperson. The GCC Foundation also contributed to the purchase of the building along with the college receiving a grant from the American Welding Society. “With this new facility, we will strengthen our partnerships with our regional businesses and industry through increased training,” said Dr. George McNulty, GCC President. The GCC Welding lab is housed in this new facility. “This welding shop is the most technologically advanced training facility in the Upper Midwest,” said Erik Guenard, Vice President of Business Services.
“I think it’s going to be nothing short of an amazing experience for students and workforce students coming into the building to receive training for their future or current position,” said GCC Welding Instructor, Gary Gouin. On average, about half of the GCC students study in the occupational fields, and the building of this facility helps the college continue to focus on workforce development. “We’ll house our new workforce development director in this building, and we’re going to continue to put skilled trades training programs in this building for it to be a hub for all skilled trades training at Gogebic Community College,” said Guenard. The facility opened its doors to students in January of 2020.
