Main School Sports Day 2022
A letter from the Headmistress Dear Parents, As we come to the end of what has been a very busy week at Godstowe it is hard to believe that there are now just seven school days remaining until the end of this academic year. It was wonderful today to welcome all the children, including many new joiners, into their new classes and Transition children up to Main School. We know how beneficial this opportunity is for the children to spend time with their new classmates ahead of September. The week began with ABRSM exams for which I know the girls have practised very hard indeed, and I wish them luck with their results. Transition had a fantastic outing to Wendover woods, and I have really enjoyed looking at the photos. Wednesday was Main School Sports Day which saw a wonderful display of camaraderie and support from all girls and parents. It was lovely to have spectators back at one of our favourite events and the lovely sunny weather was a real advantage. I am so impressed by the way in which the girls threw themselves in to all of the events. Thursday afternoon gave the Middle Thirds the opportunity to present their outdoor Shakespeare plays to staff and parents and it was a real pleasure to then award the girls with their Dove Diplomas at Bronze or Bronze Plus level. Thank you to Miss Bennett and the English Department who supported the girls in their outstanding performances. On Thursday evening, the Leavers’ Dinner took place and it was quite emotional to spend the evening with this amazing group of Fourths. We all enjoyed a delicious three course dinner on the theme of 007, took part in a tricky quiz and then adjourned for dancing and the fun of a photo booth. At the time of writing I am looking forward to the final Recital Concert of the year and wish you a fun and relaxing weekend.

Claire Gillett, Head of Lodge
Hannah Smart, Head of Nursery Kindergarten have started learning to tell the time – o’clock and half-past – as well as compare seconds, minutes and hours. In History, we are nearing the end of our Aztec topic and enjoyed finding out about their homes, food and clothes. They finished the week with a PSHE lesson on ‘ The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ clearly understanding the moral of the story.
We were very pleased to hold our second Lodge Recital Concert on Monday, and especially happy to be able to invite parents this time. Over 20 Kindergarten and Transition children performed on the piano, violin and flute and it was lovely to see not only their confidence in performing and introducing themselves, but also their obvious enjoyment in playing the pieces. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and well done to their peers who were a very supportive audience.
The highlight for Transition this week was our trip to Wendover Woods on Tuesday. We had beautiful weather, and spent the morning playing various team building games, working as a whole year group and then in smaller groups to complete different challenges. We enjoyed our picnic lunches, including ice lollies to celebrate Clement's birthday, which were greatly appreciated! In the afternoon we followed a trail through the woods, enjoying the various play areas and activities en route. It was lovely to spend the whole day appreciating the outdoor environment. Next week, we are looking forward to visiting Main School on several occasions, to eat our lunch in the dining room, meet up with Form I for some games, and visit the Library and Health Centre.
This week Nursery have enjoyed an ‘under the sea’ week. A particular highlight has been making some beautiful decorations for the Summer Fete. We enjoyed using as many recycled materials as possible to do this, to save them reaching the sea. In Cookery we made some pearl treasure biscuits, which were delicious. We have also been looking at which items float or sink. Next week we have decided to explore some of our very favourite activities from the year and we are going to be working on getting ready for our new year groups following on from Induction Day today. It's been another brilliant week in Beginners. We have continued our under the sea adventures with some piratethemed learning. We have been reading some pirate stories, thinking about pirate adventures and what our piratey names would be. In Maths, we have started learning about halving and sharing, and we were teaching the pirates to share their treasure fairly.

We are going to include updates each week of our girls lessons in Main School.
This week in Geography.. Form I have been learning about refugees "We have been learning about refugees and we acted out being refugees. Sometimes because of a war, or danger, people have to leave their homes. They must be sad and scared. We also talked about how the people of Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan must feel." - Mollymay and Grace
Middles and the Weather "Mrs Drury is our teacher and we've been doing lots of field work. We have used weather instruments like a thermometer and an anemometer. We go outside and record the data. We've been able to go out lots of times and then we averaged out the data and provided an explanation. It's been really fun!" - Aryana
Lowers' traffic surveys "Last week, we went outside and recorded the different types of traffic. We counted cars, lorries and pedestrians and what direction they were travelling in. We then discussed why certain times of the day would have more traffic in one direction. We used our results and plotted them in a graph. It's been really interesting to see the different lengths blocks on our charts." Shukee

Form II made clouds "In our Geography lessons with Mrs Humphries, we have been learning about the Water Cycle. It's been really fun because we got to do an experiment.
30th June 4.30pm U10 and U11 Tennis at Royal Masonic School
We poured boiling water over an ice cube in a jar, then put a foil lid over it really quickly. Because the water melted the ice, it caused condensation which then created a cloud within the jar. We have also been looking at maps, and learning 4 and 6 figure grid references. We followed the River Thames, tried to spot our houses and Godstowe. We also learnt that there are 18 bridges over the River Thames!" - Sky and Vivian

Sports Results Tennis On Tuesday our U12 Tennis team played John Hampden U13’s. This is a new fixture for us and one we hope to repeat next year. The first round was played as girls against boys with the John Hampden team winning 3-1. The second round was mixed doubles and some great tennis was played with impressive rallies and confident volleys. Well done girls - a very successful evening.

We had a fantastic, albeit hot, Sports Day on Wednesday 22nd June. A big congratulations to Pankhurst for their resounding win. I must also congratulate Emily H on breaking the Uppers' 800m record and Scarlett Y on breaking the Uppers' Javelin record. I would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and siblings who came to the event and supported their daughters in their races.
