Ms Green celebrating Tatler's Best Prep Head award with form IM

Headmistress' Letter Dear Parents, It has been an exciting week at Godstowe. It was so wonderful to watch the Form I and Form II Swimming Gala against Lambrook on Monday evening. The girls swam brilliantly and the whole occasion was slick and full of energy. There were also two further match reports read by the Sports Captains this morning, all with very positive results! In assembly this morning we celebrated National Poetry Day with a selection of poetry presented by groups and individuals across the school. Particularly thought provoking was the Fourths’ poem about individual thumb prints …I will let your daughters bring you up to speed on that one!

I am looking forward to attending the Lodge Harvest Festival celebrations this afternoon and then shortly after that going to the Recital Concert. We will miss parents of course but both events will be recorded and posted on our YouTube channel for parents to view only. Thank you so much to the many parents who have sent congratulations for the Tatler Award - this award although presented to the Head is of course really to the whole school because it is just not possible to be the best Head without being Head of the best school! On that positive and exciting note I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Claire Gillett, Head of Lodge

Hannah Smart, Head of Nursery

This week we have all been practising our Harvest songs and readings ready for our Harvest Celebration today. Thank you so much to everyone for their kind donations which will be much appreciated. This week Nursery have continued with our theme of Autumn. The children loved making sensory sun catchers with leaves and big hoops. Printing with vegetables has been another favourite in Nursery this week too, especially rolling with corn to create texture. The sound of the week was a for apple pie and we made our very own apple pies on Tuesday. They were delicious! Our Number Zoo character of the week was Butterfly Three. Butterfly Three is a beautiful, colourful butterfly. Everyone made a beautiful butterfly to display in the Nursery. We have continued to learn about our bodies this week in Beginners, particularly thinking about how our skeleton holds us up and allows us to move around in the ways that we can. We have made our own versions of skeletons using different materials and we have very much enjoyed listening and laughing at the story of Funny bones. We have been number explorers and become experts in numbers 1-5 and we continue to learn a new sound every day to help us in our reading and writing. Our woodland learning this week has taken us on an amazing body part scavenger hunt, where we had to use our excellent

observation skills to spot pictures of different body parts hidden in the woods. We also got a chance to sing our Harvest Songs and learn about the very important job that farmers do, remembering to be grateful for the food that we eat every day. In Maths this week, Kindergarten have been working on addition, with a special focus on number bonds within ten, whilst in their Science lessons, they have continued to learn about the five senses. This week, they concentrated on their sense of taste by sampling a variety of foods, to determine whether it was a sweet, salty, bitter or sour flavour. Needless to say, the sweet tastes were most popular! In Geography, the children have taken a look at the four countries of the United Kingdom and engaged in some cultural activities from each country, including Scottish Country Dancing and a traditional English afternoon tea. Finally, in Computing, Kindergarten started to hone their typing skills using the fun Typing Club program.

Young Climate Warriors Quite a powerful statement from a scientist? Climate change is one of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced. Yet many people never talk about it, have the opportunity to discuss how they feel, or let their voices be heard by others.

Transition have continued their work on addition of two 2-digit numbers. They have been very successful in adding when there are more than 9 in the ones column, well done Transition! In Art, they took a walk around the school grounds to collect autumn leaves and other 'treasures' along the way. Once back in the classroom they used wax crayons in autumnal colours to do wax leaf rubbings. Some Lodge children spotted a conker challenge in the entrance this week, to guess the number of conkers the children (and groundsmen!) have collected at playtimes. Mrs Fossel in the Lodge Art room wonders if you have any spare buttons for our craft supplies? If you are recycling any clothing, please could you see if there are buttons that you could cut off and collect for us!

TALK ABOUT IT - The most important thing you can do to fight climate change

Katharine Hayhoe – Atmospheric scientist, Professor of Political Science, an expert reviewer for the 4th IPCC Assessment report, and a UN ‘Champion for the Earth’

This week Young Climate Warriors are encouraged to both walk and talk – walking more to cut their carbon emissions, and talking more – to chat, share, discuss what they know, feel and think about climate change. Boarders' Corner Turner House was woken up at 7:45am followed by breakfast at 8:30am. As usual, we enjoyed delicious sweet syrup, berries, waffles and cream. After a delightful breakfast girls had varied durations of prep time from 1hr 15 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes. Girls had free time for the next few hours, some had music practice at 11:00, some had EAL and some just chilled out and played some games of Just Dance. Lunch was at 12:30pm; we all had a fabulous meal of penne bolognese. The morning was over, but the real fun was to happen during the afternoon. At 2:00pm girls had an autumn art activity. The Middles constructed a volcano for their Geography homework. The process involved taping newspaper to a plastic bottle to make a structure and papier-mâchéing on top. Uppers and Fourths did an autumnal art activity using pastels and acrylic paints.

This was the first gala of the year for both year groups. It was great to see the girls putting in some excellent performances with many very close races throughout the gala. With all the races completed Lambrook narrowly won overall. It was a great event for all the swimmers involved and the U8 & U9 can be very proud of their performance.

After the art activity, girls had a choice of doing either free swim in the swimming pool or playing board games. Continue reading
