Godstowe Girls Commended in Essay Competition Five Godstowe girls took part in Shrewsbury School's Sir Philip Sidney Essay Competition, with Melody achieving runner-up position and Annie and Ivy both highly commended for their essays.

This is a challenging competition that encourages girls to formulate opinions and write persuasively on a subject, allowing their writing skills to shine. Well done to our brilliant wordsmiths - Melody H, Annie C, Ivy Z, Lili S and Evie S.

This week Nursery have enjoyed a theme of ‘Fairies’. They enjoyed making magic wands and magic spells, as well as beautiful fairies with construction materials. Our fairy themed maths was another favourite this week. The sound of the week was b and we made buzzing bees. We are looking forward to a dragon theme next week!

Our learning this week in Beginners has been around the theme of dragons inspired of course by the story of St George and the Dragon. We drew and painted our own dragons and had a go at describing them in our writing. Most of the dragons turned out to be rather nice ones, not at all like the dragon that St George slayed. We enjoyed reading lots of different dragon stories and talking about the adventures our dragons could get involved in. Lots of imaginative language and fabulous role play took place in both classrooms. It has been a fun week and we look forward to saying goodbye to dragons and starting our Minibeast topic, which will hopefully take us on a wonderful world of discovery.

Transition has had another good week.

In Literacy, we have been looking at Kindergarten have had an exciting week and particularly enjoyed observing the germination of both their sunflower plants and the bean seeds that are growing in the classrooms. They were also able to dissect a tulip to discover the component plant parts within. This week, the children were introduced to our topic for the term, Rainforests, with particular focus on the various locations of Rainforests around the world. In Art, they began a two week project, recreating Rousseau's painting, 'Tiger in a Tropical Storm'.

Kindergarten also learned about St George and enjoyed retelling the legend through words, art and drama!

quest themed stories, and we worked as a year group in pairs, to order the main events from a story. It was lovely to be able to do this outside in the sunshine, on the playground! In Art, we have started looking at the work of Impressionist Artists, with an initial focus on Monet. Transition are painting their own version of 'The Japanese Footbridge'. This week we focussed on small brush strokes in different shades of green for the trees and we will continue next week with the water.

Continuing our Science topic this term of 'Animals including Humans', this week we looked at the Life Cycle of a Frog. We are grateful to Freya for bringing in some tadpoles from her grandparents' pond for us to study this week!

Boarders' Corner written this week by Walker House

The sun smiled down on us for the boarders’ first weekend of Summer Term allowing the girls to enjoy lots of time spent out in the fresh air, making the most of Godstowe’s gorgeous grounds. It was lovely to see our boarders together again after their Easter break and to welcome back some of our international girls who had not returned to the school site since the end of last year. We also had a few new faces to introduce to weekend life at Godstowe as several girls were with us as part of one of the school’s ‘Boarding Bundles’, getting an exciting taster of all that boarding has to offer!

Boarders' Weekend Video 24th & 25th April Sunday morning involved revision and relaxation, before the everpopular afternoon swim sessions.

Then, it was time for the finale of the weekend: a delicious barbeque, prepared by the fantastic kitchen staff and eaten out in the evening sunshine. The girls sat down on their picnic mats tucking into burgers and corn on the cob, with some inviting salad options too. It was clear to see how happy they were to be back amongst their friends and looking forward to a lively, fun-filled Summer Term at Godstowe.

On Saturday, all the girls had a busy afternoon trying an eclectic range of activities. They headed out onto the field and got active playing rounders a sign that a British school’s Summer Term has truly begun! They also tried out their baking skills in the house kitchens, with tasty results, and let their imaginations run wild designing some wonderfully creative make-up ‘looks’ (on paper only!).

Climate change poses significant risks to children’s health and well-being by heightening threats of disease, food insecurity and diminished access to safe water and sanitation.

This week’s challenge asks Young Climate Warriors to change their habits to help save water – having 5-minute showers, turning the tap off whilst brushing their teeth or stopping a dripping tap. We are also encouraging children to think about the water issues experienced by other children around the world, which are being greatly exacerbated by climate change.

We include a WaterAid video ‘What has climate change got to do with Water’.
