L6 A&ID- Design project: CafĂŠ Social Goda Galdikaite
Design Brief
• There is a need to create a Café/Social place in which different ‘groups’ of people can meet and socialise. Cities recognise this and require me to produce a series of ideas for different free-standing building’s and Interior Designed Café spaces. The structure I create should provide indoor and outdoor space with the ability to adjust/expand depending on the weather. My building will be designed for a specific site in Aldgate.
The Building should offer the following:
• Different eating spaces catering for groups of 2-4, 6-8 up to a total of 20 for the interior extending to a further 20 outside seats • Kitchen prep & food storage space • Food counter service • Free Wi-Fi • Washroom facilities including M&F and Disabled • Outdoor eating • Disabled access • Adaptable space to cater for other evening events
Industrial Aesthetics • Something industrial has to do with an industry or factories • Industrial architecture describes a minimalist style of surface decoration, industrial materials, clean lines, flat roofs, jutting edges, and polished surfaces. This style has increased in popularity over the last several decades. It is widely embraced by those who choose to live life in busy industrial cities and away from suburban communities. • Interior spaces in the style of factories usually have brick walls , metal furniture, kitchens, stairs, etc. Also, there could be exposed pipes around the ceilings and walls. The main palette of colours you would see are black, brown, grey, dark blue and red.

Cafés, kiosks and pavilions
The French term ‘café’ means coffee house. A café is a type of restaurant that sells coffee and other hot beverages, as well as light refreshments like snacks and baked goods. Cafés are usually connected to buildings and other shops, there could be sometimes a separate built café. And you can relax and sit in cafés to enjoy your drink and food
Kiosks are small coffee shops that also make coffee, other hot beverages and food like cafes. Also, other kiosks sell magazines and newspapers. Unlike cafés, kiosks are little huts which are placed around big parks and in places like train stations where there are lots of people. But, there are no seating areas in kiosks since they are tiny so people take their things to go or they sit on benches.
A pavilion is an open sheltered space mainly used as a shelter, seating and social area. Also, pavilions could be cafés, restaurants, bars, outdoor cinemas and much more. Pavilions aren’t really considered as buildings since they don’t have normal walls and there aren’t any doors. But, there are buildings in the styles of pavilions since they have roofs like them
CafĂŠ La Miell Japan
• I really like the way this cafÊ looks since the building reminds me of an industrial warehouse. But, at the same it looks nice and welcoming. The concrete used on the exterior and the interior gives the industrial feel. Also, the wood used inside brings in life into the room as well as the natural light from the big windows.
Royal Park kiosks in London
Different tones of wood Designed by: The Mizzi Studio Architecture and design There are a few of these kiosks in London which have a unique modern design. Wood is quite a big part for the interior for industrial styled spaces. The wood brings a raw and natural feeling to this kiosk and interior spaces. Also, I really like how it blends in with the nature around it since I looks like it fits with the park.
Portsoken Pavilion London Steel roof
Plan View
Window across
I like how this cafÊ pavilion has an interesting shaped roof, also it’s made out of steel which is a common material used in the industrial style. The big windows remind me of the big windows in factories, but they look more modern and nice.
Primary Research Photos Looking at all these photos I can see the most used material for the industrial style is Steel. It is the main material I want to focus on for my design since that’s what makes the place ‘industrial’
Secondary Research Photos
Design Idea 1 This roof would be made of steel and have layers of it on top of each other like the Portsoken pavilion. Then there would be big windows across both sides to bring in natural light to the inside.
This idea was inspired by the cafĂŠ la miell by adding another right-angled triangle building on the other side to make a triangular prism shaped building. Also, the grey concrete walls are inspired by this cafĂŠ

For this cafÊ I haven’t added any outdoor eating places since there would already be a lot of room inside and you can see the outside view from the windows. When you come inside, you can straight away see two doors for the food storage room and the unisex bathroom which is also suitable for disabled access. Also, at the very back there is a counter service where all the coffee and food would be prepped for customers. There are also large tables with low hanging lights to bring in the industrial style for interiors and so any size of groups could sit together.
Design Idea 2 The shape of this roof is inspired by the serpentine pavilion but instead, I have decided to make the roof out of wood like the royal park kiosks I did my research on.
This big window across the whole building is inspired by the Portsoken Pavilions windows.

Design Idea 3 I wanted to make this building more simple but still interesting
Here I have thought of making a full glass building with a flat steel roof. From the architecture examples I have shown, flat roofs are quite common for industrial design buildings. Also, as I’ve also said before, steel is a very common material used for this style of building.

I really like this cafÊ since it has two floors and an outdoor space for lots of people to enjoy. But it doesn’t matter where you sit everyone has the same experience since you can see everything with the glass walls. Upstairs you would see more seats and walls for the bathroom and the food prep/storage area. Downstairs all the drinks and food would be sold.
Design Idea 4
This café is inspired by the street styled cafes with the slanted roofing over some outdoor seating. Also I’ve put a stone roof which was inspired by the Café La Miell roof and it looks very industrial. The walls here are white concrete so it has a clean look and the windows are big so there's natural light and people can see inside the cafe.
Sketchup designs of Idea 4
This cafÊ is quite smaller than the other ones but lots of people can still sit and enjoy their coffee. There is indoor seating as well as outdoor seating so people can go wherever they please. Since this is a small place. The bathroom is only available for one person at a time and it is suitable for everyone. Next to the bathroom is a little food storage area and food would be prepped where the coffee is at the counter. The furniture is wooden and metal like in most industrial spaces. Also, I put brick walls on the sides so they bring more of the industrial style and the space doesn’t look so empty.

Bronze Steel Roof White concrete
Terrace
This cafĂŠ is a more improved version of the first idea with an outdoor terrace and the roof looks a little different as well. Also, instead of dark grey concrete I have changed it to white concrete so it looks brighter and not so dark.
An idea on how the inside would look like Terrace
I really like where the outdoor terrace is place because it makes the cafĂŠ look complete and less like a warehouse, and when customers come in their eyes are immediately drawn to it.
This is a rough idea of the inside of the cafĂŠ, its quite simple but it still looks nice and welcoming. Also, lots of small details like plants, art, and other decorations would make it look complete
Model of final design
I like how I changed the roof inspired by the portsoken pavilion because it looks modern but at the same time the steel shows the industrial style. Also, the lighter concrete is a feature in industrial spaces, but the dark grey made it look more like a warehouse than a cafĂŠ, but the lighter concrete gives a welcoming and bright feeling.
