Design Brief Architecture is becoming more modern and advanced, due to technology developing and styles changing. I think supermarkets have lots of changes with technology where it’s easier to shop for customers. Because of this, the architecture and interior of supermarkets need to be developed since they’re old and not so appealing to customers. I think supermarkets need to be redesigned to attract people and give then a welcoming feeling. Customers need to enjoy the experience of food shopping rather than seeing it as a chore.

New modern store features Self checkout is a useful way to shop when you’re not buying much products. The system relies on shoppers scanning items themselves, packing them in carrier bags and paying for their purchase through an electronic system. This saves time for customers who have to wait in long queues for just one or two products where the people in front have lots of groceries.

Tesco’s ‘scan as you shop’ allows customers to process their own shopping and therefore provides a quicker way to shop. Customers simply scan items using a barcode scanner, pack their own groceries whilst around the supermarket and once they've finished, pay for their food at dedicated 'Scan as You Shop' checkouts.

Already existing futuristic store (Amazon fresh)

Since September, 2020, Amazon have been opening “just walk out” grocery stores where shoppers can pick up their goods and leave without having to visit a till. The Amazon Fresh “contactless” shops are available to anyone signed up to Amazon and with the app on their phone. Customers must scan in a code on their phone to gain entry.

Once inside, shoppers can pick up the goods they want without scanning them or even visiting a till. The bill is automatically charged to a shopper’s Amazon account when they leave the store. This new way of shopping is very quick and easy for customers since they don’t have to waste time standing in queues to have their products scanned.

Chedraui Supermarket, Mexico City (Rojkind Arquitectos)

Rooftop terrace

I found an already developed supermarket which has older stores which aren’t that intriguing. The structure and big window gives the store its dynamic signature in direct contrast to the typical ‘retail boxes’. There’s a rooftop terrace with an orchard and a market square which are incorporated with a series of pathways connecting the two. Customers can access the orchard to learn about organic farming and purchase fresh produce. I like that it has something like that because it makes the shopping experience fun, and you learn things whilst you’re there

I found an improved version of a Tesco in England, even this is not the type of building I would like to make, and the interior is still the same. I like that the building is all glass giving it a contemporary look And their saying ‘every little helps’ is interesting

Philharmonie de Paris, concert hall (Jean Nouvel) I think this building is interesting because of the aluminium panels in a basketweave design swirl tightly around the structure and contrast with the rest of its matte exterior. Also, the exterior features the images of 340,000 birds etched into the surface ranging from light grey to black to symbolize a grand take-off.

Heydar Aliyev Centre, Azerbaijan (Zaha Hadid)

Building is connected in one flow movement

I like this building in particular because it represents a fluid form which emerges by the folding of the landscape's natural topography and by the wrapping of individual functions of the Centre. All functions of the Centre, together with entrances, are represented by folds in a single continuous surface.

Denver Art Museum, The Hamilton Building, USA (Daniel Libeskind) I like the angular design of the Hamilton building juts in many directions, supported by a 2,740ton structure that contains more than 3,100 pieces of steel. One of the angled elements extends 167 feet over and 100 feet above the street below. None of the 20 planes is parallel or perpendicular to another. The building imitates the sharp angles of the nearby rocky mountains as well as the geometric crystals found at the mountains' base near Denver.

Geometric shapes

I like that is building is also like crystals— inspired by the crystalline forms in the ROM’s mineralogy galleries. The structure was created of organically interlocking prismatic forms turning this important corner of Toronto, and the entire museum complex, into a luminous beacon. What’s I find interesting is that there are no right angles and only one vertical wall in the structure, making it the most complicated construction projects in America.

Primary Research/ first idea I had an idea of stacking two folders on top of each other making an interesting shaped building with geometric shapes at the front. I believe that there could be more done with this idea.

Primary Research/ First Idea Here I thought of looking at the shape of a watch and coming up with a building with a similar structure. I like the curved structure as it looks clean, smooth and contemporary like Zaha Hadid’s buildings.

Model of primary research/ first idea I thought it would be a good idea to create models of my first initial ideas to get a live view of what they could look like and what kind of developments I could make.

Model 2 from primary Research/second idea Also, I wanted to see the kind of form and structure I wanted to go with for the supermarket.

Development and model of second idea I stuck with the similar flow of my first idea, but I made this idea fully curved and wavy like the Heydar Aliyev Centre because I like how the flowing structure brings a calm and welcoming feeling as well as it looking very advanced and modern. I also wanted to try using the interesting window pattern to go across the whole building.

The flow structure around the building

Windows like the Heydar Aliyev Centre

Development and model of first idea I developed my first idea with the folders by cutting one of the triangular structures in half, making angled geometric shapes like the Denver Art Museum and I got an idea of making the windows in a similar crystallike design like the Royal Ontario Museum.

Experimented with SketchUp on first idea I created a SketchUp model of this development because I wanted to have a more “realistic” view of my idea. I prefer the structure and shape of this building more for the supermarket than the inspiration from Zaha Hadid

Experimenting more with the triangular shapes (idea 1) I experimented with the top triangular model and placed it in different ways and angles to create a more interesting look for the building.

Idea 2 From doing these experiments, I thought of new potential ideas for my final building. Also, I the geometric shapes you can see on the models so I can understand the structure more.

Ideas for the interior Here I looked at the ideas I would like for the inside of the supermarket. I think lower-level food storages are better than tall isles because the space would feel more open, and you don’t have to go through every single area to go to the area you want to since you can just see the items from anywhere.

I think food stalls should be placed around the whole store in different places rather than long straight isles so that its more interesting to look around the place. Also, to intrigue customers more there could be stalls added where people use the groceries to make food so people can learn how to make simple recipes at home.

Final design drawings For the final I decided to put three triangular shapes together in different angles inspired by Daniel Libeskind’s buildings and have the windows like Zaha Hadid’s building. This design brings the futuristic and modern style in, and it would attract more people to come into the shop.

Evaluation

For this project I wanted to explore the contemporary style to change the way supermarkets look so they look more modern. I wanted to attract more people to come to the physical store rather than shopping online to bring together the community and make their experience with grocery shopping more interesting. All of the buildings that I have researched in this project have inspired me in different ways to create this supermarket. The sharp shapes were inspired by the Denver Art Museum, the Philharmonie de Paris, concert hall and the Royal Ontario Museum. I wanted to have a more sharp structure to add emphasis to the supermarket and make it more intriguing for customers to go to. The window wasinspired by the Heydar Aliyev Centre by Zaha Hadid, I like how simple it looks and the size of it makes it look clean and contemporary. I think I pushed my creative boundaries with this building because its quite different than usual buildings that you would see in London and this structure could of gone wrong or right. Overall, I like how this design has came out and it fits with most of the brief and specification. If I had more time to develop on this project, I would of thought of more ideas for the inside of the supermarket, thinking about how to make a customers experience more interesting and memorable as they shop for groceries. Also, I should of thought of adding the movement and flow style to the design as it was mentioned in the brief.

Design Brief

Your client has really enjoyed the outcome from the last project and now they want your help with one more thing. Big supermarkets usually have a gas station so not only customers can get groceries but they can get fuel for their car. Since this remaking of the supermarket has been made to look more futuristic, they would like to as well as a fuel station but to add a car charging station since electric cars are becoming more popular since they are better for the environment. Also, along with the car charging/ gas station, they would like you to add a pavilion connecting to a mini café to create a nice contemporary area for people to visit.

Specification

• Make the fuel and car charging stations go well together in one area • Create an interesting pavilion, considering the style of the new supermarket • Add a mini café with the pavilion, (find an interesting way to connect them) • Contemporary style • Make it look exciting and new (not like the usual gas stations)

Marsk Tower (Denmark)

Top view

I found this structure on Instagram an I found it really interesting as it reminds me of the DNA double helix shape, since it looks like to lines are swirling around it. I especially like the way the steps are made to swirl up around the whole structure of this tower. I think this kind of form for a pavilion would be good to make the gas station more interesting.

Vandusen Garden Visitor Centre

Front elevation view

The Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association and the Vancouver Parks Board wanted to find a way to make VanDusen more interesting as a destination. They realised that a new facility was needed— one that could attract visitors locally while elevating the garden's profile internationally. This structure is places at the front of the garden to intrigue people and convince them to explore everything around as well as the center itself. I like the curved structure of this building and I think having a curved structure for the pavilion would look good.

Gallery of Butterfly Aviary The Butterfly Aviary is located at the center of the Butterfly Pavilion, shaded by its defining golden roof. The polygonal architecture is an artificial eco-system, and its rainforest biotope – populated with countless butterflies. This pavilion with the flower patterns make the pavilion look pretty as well as covering sunlight. I like the idea of having a pavilion that covers and shows some sunlight at the same time so when the sun shines you can see the interesting pattern from it on the ground.

Perspective view 1

I like this pavilion because of its curved shape and it doesn’t look like the usual uninteresting pavilions in other gas stations. As well as this I like that when it is dark the pavilion has lights underneath which makes it look really nice.

Experimenting With Pinterest Models I wanted ti experiment with models that I have found on Pinterest to gain more inspiration and think of interesting ways to make my pavilion look attractive and contemporary. I also created models with the same structure of these to have an idea of what they would look like in person.

Experiment Models

Idea 1 This idea is inspired by the structure of my Pinterest models and the step-like shape of the Marsk Tower I did research on. I like how these straight sticks are all in different angles that it makes the pavilion look curvy as well as straight which is intriguing to look at. Also, this pavilion looks good at any angle which I have experimented with in different ways and this one came out to be my favourite one.

Model of first idea

Idea 2 This pavilion is inspired with an other Pinterest model that I’ve experimented with and I like the triangular steplike shape of this one. What's interesting about this structure is that from the front and back there are spaces which look nice and from the top there are no gaps which block out rainfall.

From the side there are gaps but from the top there are no Spaces to cover sunlight and rain fall

Model of Second idea

Idea 3 This curved shaped pavilion is inspired by the VanDusen Garden Visitor Center building and the patterns with glass are inspired by the Royal Ontario Museum Windows. This patterned glass makes the pavilion look interesting as well as bringing light to the place and blocking out rainfall.

Final Design For my final outcome I wanted to combine my favourite ideas together into one and I like the overall look of it as it looks interesting and it makes the gas station look unique compared to other ones.

Curved shape inspired by the researched gas station pavilion

This final outcome was inspired by the steplike pattern from my first idea and the Marsk Tower. The pavilion has straight lines that make up curves which make it look really interesting. I made a physical model to see how it would look like in person and decided to put 4 together to make a more interesting structure.

Evaluation

For this design, I wanted to go with the same style and theme as the supermarket so they go well together. As well as creating a better experience in shopping I wanted to create a better experience for customers that are coming by to fill up their gas/charge their cars. I wanted to create a pavilion to make the look of gas stations more appealing as well as a cafe with it to bring people together and make it a more interesting place to be in. Overall, I like the outcome of this design and it brings out the message that I was intending to bring to this pavilion, I liked the inspiration that I experimented and researched on to bring this design together. If I had more time for this project I could’ve focused on the interior of the café.
