Chamber of Commerce hosting two legislative forums The 2011 Kentucky General Assembly resumes on Feb. 1 after a busy week in early January.

The Chamber will host legislative forums with Daviess County legislators on Saturday, Feb. 19 and March 5 at 8 a.m. at

the Commerce Center.

The Chamber has taken positions on several policy issues and has again contracted the lobbying services of Capital Link Consultants during the session.

The Chamber adopted an entire series of measures that would help make Kentucky

business-friendly.

Stan Lampe, president of the Louisville-based Kentuckians for Better Transportation, is the guest speaker at the Feb. 3 Rooster Booster Breakfast.

The breakfast will start at 7:30 a.m. at the Community Center at Owensboro Christian Church. A fee of $10 per person includes a buffet breakfast.

The Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp. is the Rooster Booster sponsor for February.

Kentuckians for Better Transportation is an advocate for all modes of transportation in Kentucky – air, highway, public tran-

sit, rail and water – and works with elected leaders, opinion leaders, the media and others to move transportation forward in the Commonwealth. Lampe has been president of KBT since January of 2010.

He previously has been involved in government relations and corporate media relations, including as a staff member of the chambers of commerce in Louisville and Northern Kentucky.

His corporate positions were in communications and government relations with Alcan Aluminum and Ashland Oil. He’s lived abroad and is a graduate of Ohio State University and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Interstate scoping studies on local parkways announced

Transportation Matters!

Highway transportation opportunities in the region continue to advance, including the Jan. 18 announcement by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet that it will soon perform “scoping studies” on both the Audubon and Natcher Parkways.

The work will determine what is needed to update the parkways to federal Interstate standards.

Though the parkways are limited-access, four-lane structures, they do not necessarily meet Interstate standards related to interchange design, median width and/or bridge overpass height.

In 2009, Congress designated the Audubon Parkway as a future I-69 spur and the Natcher Parkway as an Interstate 65/66 spur.

“This is great news and we worked with Senator Jim Bunning the past three years to fund these studies,” explains Chamber President Jody Wassmer. “These studies are a big piece of the Chamber’s ongoing advocacy to bring the advantages of Interstate access directly to Owensboro.”

interstate 69 In the meantime, the Chamber continues its work through the C-LINK alliance of 12 chambers of commerce in northwestern Kentucky and the WKRCA alliance of 14 chambers in southwestern Kentucky to advance Interstate 69, which will intersect with the Audubon Parkway three miles east of Henderson.

Kentucky highway officials are currently working with federal highway officials to determine what upgrades will be necessary on the Pennyrile, Western Kentucky and Purchase parkways to become I-69.

Scoping studies on those parkways preceded the current work.

The Gener al Assembly included eight I-69 projects worth more than $50 million in its 2010 road plan, the first time I-69 has been included in the state’s highway construction and maintenance program.

Work continues on the first phase of the U.S. 60 East bypass extension from U.S. 60 to Kentucky 144.

u.s. 231 & interstate Corridor Connector In southern Indiana, the last section of the new four-lane U.S. 231 from I-64 to the Natcher Bridge is expected to open soon. That will leave only the 2.2-mile U.S. 60 East bypass extension east of Owensboro as the last link to complete the I-64/65 Corridor Connector.

W i t h phase I construction of the bypass extension well underway, Kentucky highway officials plan to bid the last phase this spring with final completion expected in 2013.

“This is another project the Chamber has advocated, particularly in the spring of 2009 when the bypass extension received 6 percent of Kentucky’s transportation dollars from the stimulus bill,” adds Wassmer. “We believe the east side of Owensboro will be ripe for development with the completion of the corridor connector within sight.”

Feb. 17 Make a Business Connection going “on the road” with more connections!

The Chamber’s monthly Make a Business Connection event will take a different turn on Feb. 17 when participants visit Chamber members and have to promote their own business.

Formerly called “Operation Thank You,” each participant will be assigned about 25 members to visit, thank them for their membership and leave them the Chamber’s annual report, the new 2010 Owensboro Magazine and other Chamber materials. Howev-

er, it’s much more than that, according to Chamber President Jody Wassmer.

“This will be a great opportunity for participants to ‘talk up’ their business and possibly gain new customers,” says Wassmer. “They can use their Chamber involvement to turn a ‘cold call’ into more of a ‘warm call.’”

The opportunity will start at 11:30 a.m. with a pizza lunch at the Commerce Center followed by a training session of how a member visit should be

conducted that will be led by Robert Gleason, Jr., of Ross Sinclair & Associates, 2011 Ambassadors vice-chair.

Participants will be asked to make their visits during the afternoon or no later than Friday, Feb. 25.
