EPDs – A Few Simple Principles by DR. JOSEPH MASSEY The more we learn about EPDs the more we have trouble understanding how to use them. The main principles around EPDs are that we can compare two different animals as to expectation of performance. It has been driven into my thought process that it does not matter what the absolute value is but rather the difference between two animals. For example, when evaluating two prospective sires for weaning weight, bull A with a weaning weight EPD of 41 pounds compared to bull B with a weaning weight EPD of 44 pounds one would expect the offsprings from bull B to have a weaning weight average of three pounds more than bull A. It would not matter if both of these bulls produce calves in central Texas or in the panhandle of Florida; bull B on average will always produce calves that weigh three pounds more than bull A offsprings. EPDs are used to select or to compare animals that you might want to use in your breeding program. Therefore, you as a breeder must know you goals. EPDs therefore, serve as a guideline in selecting your breeding animals; but you must know what you want to produce and why. Another important principle to keep in mind is the accuracy of the EPD. As a seed stock producer, you should know if you are selecting a bull for your seed stock herd or a commercial beef herd. While your first reaction might be that it does not matter, I would strongly disagree. A breeder selecting a prospective sire for breeding seed stock cannot afford to use a
bull with a low accuracy. Let’s look at bull A with EPDs of 41 pounds and with an accuracy of .74. One would expect that the EPD on average would be 41 pounds +/- 4 pounds; therefore, the calves should average weaning from 37 pounds to 45 pounds on average. Bull B with an EPD of 44 pounds and an accuracy of .5 will have offsprings that will average 44 pounds +/- 7 pounds. In other words, the predictability of expectation is not as great so the likely outcome has a wider range of expectation 37 to 51 pounds on average. To take this further, the lower the accuracy the greater the spread on expectation. As a seed stock producer, accuracy is equally important as the EPD value because expectation should be high. A low accuracy bull expectation may have much more variation than one would want. The commercial producer may not have a choice when selecting bulls because he cannot wait to prove out a bull nor afford to buy a highly proven bull. The seed stock producer must know what his goals and expectations are and which animals are more likely to produce the desired outcome. It is very simple. A low accuracy EPD bull is like going to a gambling casino and betting that if you play long enough you will get lucky. We simply know that the odds are against us. A high accuracy EPD bull increases the chance of success, therefore reducing the chance of failure. A bull with a pedigree EPD has the lowest accuracy since the EPD prediction is based on the parents and not on its own genetic merits. The genetic merits will not be determined until the bull has his own data and his breeding value will not be known until he produces offsprings. Therefore, the accuracy is the lowest when based on pedigree alone and highest when offsprings are produced which is the direct proof of a bull. In the future with the use of DNA markers and producing a genomic assisted EPD, the accuracy of EPDs will increase earlier in the life cycle because the DNA markers will be able to establish whether an offspring has inherited the appropriate gene to effect traits as desired. The tool for selection in the future will still be the EPD not the DNA test. The DNA test will only enhance the EPDs.

Los principios importantes que tratan con las DEP son que podemos comparar a dos animales diferentes con respecto a la expectativa de su desempeño. Se me ha penetrado en mis procesos de pensamiento que no importa lo que es el valor absoluto sino cuáles son las diferencias entre dos animales. Por ejemplo, cuando se evalúan dos sementales posibles para el peso al destete, el toro A con una DEP para el peso al destete de 41 libras comparado con el toro B con una DEP para el peso al destete de 44 libras, se puede esperar que la progenie del toro B, tendrá un promedio de 3 libras de pesos al destete más que la progenie del toro A. No sería de importancia si ambos de estos toros producen becerros en el centro de Texas o en el noroeste de la Florida; el toro B, en promedio, siempre producirá becerros con 3 libras más de peso al destete que el toro A. Las DEP se usan para seleccionar o para comparar animales que uno quizás quiera usar en su programa de cría. Por lo tanto, usted como criador, debe saber cuáles son sus metas. Off and Running Well these are certainly exciting times to be in the cattle business and specifically a great time to be involved with Brangus. Record high prices across the board, limited supply of Brangus cattle and demand from the consumer that isn’t wavering. In my country it’s nearly impossible to find a 2 year old bull. The commercial cattle operations are snatching up young bulls as soon as you’re willing to sell them. Commercial Brangus females are bringing great prices right off the ranch with more demand than supply. There is little doubt that commercial cattlemen want Brangus cattle. I find it extremely encouraging to see the consignment sales making a come back. The only downside has been finding cattle available for the sales. Here in Texas two recent sales illustrate that point to me. A consignment sale in Abilene Texas saw 36 bulls go for an average of $3102 dollars and all but one sold to commercial buyers. If you’re asking “Why only 36?”, that was all the sale manager could find after scouring the membership and countryside. Those wonderful commercial Brangus females sold for an average

of $1592 for pairs, and bred females bought $1232. Those are prices a cattleman can make money on. Texas Brangus Breeders had a registered sale in Salado Texas that saw the 1 bull in the sale bring $7250. The registered females brought in averages of $1800 for open cows, bred females $2182 and pairs $2464. Once again these are amounts that a breeder can make money on. Take advantage of these consignment sales when you can, they are a great way to expose both registered and commercial cattle folks to your operation. Remember a few important points when entering a consignment sale; your responsibility for that animal doesn’t stop when the sale manager picks it for the sale. Deliver it in excellent condition, it is a reflection on what you’re doing with your cow herd. Make sure you present that animal in the best light - trim it up. Put as much information as you can in the catalog and on the stall they’re in - the more information, the better. Work the stall yourself, welcome people, ask if you can provide information not only about the animal for sale, but what you’re doing back at your ranch with your herd. These are only a few recommendations; visit with the sale manager for other ideas. The negatives to our operations still center on cost of feed, fuel and fertilizer so watching your bottom line remains important. Take every advantage to reduce your cost without jeopardizing the quality of your cattle. Transfer your bulls. Use the OptimaxX and Brangus Gold tags, and if they fit your programs the branded programs the Association has been working on. Remember you’re never too old to learn, so take advantage of the articles in our publications as well as others to keep yourself up to date with what is happening in the industry and ways to increase your bottom line. When I first got in the business I was told this “Be clear about what you’re doing and who you’re going to be doing it with. Commercial cattleman are going to be your primary market find out what they want, what is important to them in the bulls they buy and the replacement females they seek. Raise cattle that fit your environment. Watch your cost and be realist about what the market will pay. Off and Running Bien, ciertamente que éstas son épocas emocionantes para el negocio ganadero y específicamente una época excelente para estar involucrado con la raza Brangus. Precios de récord en todos lados, un abasto limitado de ganado Brangus y una demanda sin cesar por parte del consumidor. En mi país, es casi imposible encontrar un toro de dos años de edad. Las operaciones ganaderas comerciales están arrebatando los toros jóvenes ni bien alguien esté dispuesto a venderlos. Las hembras Brangus comerciales están trayendo muy buenos precios directamente en el rancho con más demanda que oferta. No hay duda que los productores comerciales quieren más ganado Brangus. In my opinion, the Global Beef Industry will see more changes in the next 10 years than we have in the last 100. One thing is certain in these dynamic times; the speed at which we must educate ourselves, communicate and do business is constantly increasing. After working through a few unexpected programming problems, BrangusLIST is now live. We have a few listings but need more to really get it going. Take a look at what is available and then add a listing of your own. If you missed the information on its release, here it is again: Need a source for Brangus Bulls? Looking for Brangus Gold Commercial Females? Considering expanding your seedstock operation with Registered Females, Semen or Embryos? BrangusLIST is your source for finding and marketing Brangus genetics. Brangus Marketing Programs staff receives calls on a weekly basis from individuals looking for Brangus genetics. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ben Spitzer grew up in the cattle business with his family involvement going back several generations and has included both commercial cattle and registered cattle of several breeds. His family has been in the Brangus seedstock business since 1982. Spitzer served as Communications/Member Services Director for the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) in Denton, TX. Prior to joining the staff at IBBA, he managed a registered Brangus operation in Georgia. Ben was a founding member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Young Producers Council (YPC) and served as the YPC delegate to the NCBA Membership Committee. He served as Chair of YPC in 2010 and now serves in an advisory role to YPC as Immediate Past Chair. As Marketing Programs Director, he oversees IBBA’s Commercial Marketing Programs as well as advertising and promotion of the Brangus breed.

Trying to figure out your summer plans? Plan on joining us for the National Junior Brangus Show in West Monroe, Louisiana, July 10-16, 2011. It is sure a good time of fun, fellowship and food! The International Brangus Auxiliary will be hosting two meetings during the week of activities. The first meeting will be the Scholarship Workshop on Wednesday, July 13, at 11:30 a.m. IBA scholarships are very competitive and students interested in completing applications are encouraged to attend the workshop. Students eligible for application are high school seniors as well as college students. The rules and strategies for the IBA scholarships will be discussed so that students will know what to include in their application. This will be the only workshop offered for applicants to attend. All students and parents are encouraged to attend this workshop and each will benefit by preparing students to prepare and complete successful applications. The deadline to apply for IBA scholarships is December 31, 2011. The IBA will have an open meeting on Thursday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. or at the conclusion of the heifer show. This meeting will be open to anyone who would like to attend and will take place at the show facility. We will discuss upcoming activities, fundraising and growing IBA. IBBA Goes Global by Marcos Borges Chairman, International marketing Committee The International Brangus Breeder Association is working hard to shorten the distance between us and to link you to one of the most progressive associations that provides a variety of innovative services. To reach this objective, IBBA started many international trade missions in 2008 with very good information to update you with the latest technologies and advancements implemented by our members and our association. IBBA and its breeders are utilizing the latest technology, including an Internet based registry, DNA marker assisted selection practices, and the development of economic indexes to constantly improve the Brangus product. Total Herd Reporting (THR) provides Brangus breeders and their customers with the most accurate data possible and provides a truer picture of where the performance of each registered animal stands in relation to its individual herd and to the breed as a whole. IBBA offers you the genetics of both black and red registered Brangus cattle which are 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Angus. Around the World by Marcos Borges Chairman, International marketing As you are aware the International Committee remains a key driving force to determining the success and long-term viability of the International Brangus Breeders Association and the Brangus breed internationally. IBBA is working to improve the recognition of the Brangus’ strengths in this region. As the producers of this region begin to include carcass and reproduction quality attributes into their breeding programs, Brangus will see increased marketing opportunities. With the new approach that IBBA and its International Committee has implemented, we already can see a substantial increase in international demand for Brangus genetics. Here is a chart provided by NABB that clearly shows a 300% growth of our international semen sale between 2008-2010. (International Committee activities started in 2007.)

Around the World Continued.... Mexico, Central and South America are particularly well suited to beef cattle production because of rich soils, abundant rainfall and an extended growing season. The tropical or subtropical nature of these regions dictate that the cattle carry some percentage of Zebu breeding in order to better handle the challenges of heat, humidity and insects. The Zebu genetics offer heat and parasite resistance and the Angus offers meat quality and, of course, is totally adapted to this type of cattle country. The cross breeding of the Zebu breed with the Angus began in South America starting in the early 1940s with livestock of British origin, which were mainly introduced in the traditional cattle grazing areas of the Province of Misiones and the Lower Chaco, at ranches which are still developing the Brangus as a breed. The Brazilian Brangus Association was founded in January 1979 by a group of breeders of Cinco Cruzes de Bagé. With the growth of the breed in Brazil, the members decided to create the Brazilian association.
South American Brangus Cattle numbers are increasing rapidly. Paraguay alone increased by 38.5% in the last 17 years, according to the latest agriculture census. Lack of product awareness and lack of knowledge in some countries is a major challenge. Our promotional material is intended to educate the producers in Central America, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Australia as to the many advantages of Brangus cattle and assure them they may contact the International Brangus Breeders Association for assistance in locating superior genetics. This promotional material is being promoted and distributed through various trade missions by IBBA, TDA, Genetic Leaders International, Inc., as well as being distributed to foreign guests in the U.S. and by mail to the numerous inquiries. Here is some good information for you to adjust your program to increase exposure to the international market. The most important marketing activity to consider for building demand in Latin American markets is to travel to the country that you are interested in to build the demand for your genetics; and personally get to know your clients and their needs. Before you travel to another country, always research their climate, environment, forages, nutrition requirements, frame score and culture. Take good promotional materials, in their language, that will detail the many advantages of your Brangus program and always make sure you travel with someone that is from that country or who knows the people, culture and market. It will save you years with regard to your goal of building up demand. Contact IBBA’s International Committee as its members can and will save you a lot of headaches. You can also contact the local Brangus association in the country you plan to visit. Doing business with Latin Americans is a little different from doing business with North Americans. People from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America prefer more interaction and entertainment while doing business. First, they develop a relationship and friendship, then they may do business. When you are ready to negotiate, don’t forget to put everything on paper because some of the negotiations can take time. Export protocols, health regulations, freights, etc., can delay the shipment, and details of the deal may be forgotten. Make sure that your veterinarian palpates and checks the soundness of the animals you export. Since international buyers are paying good money for the animals selected and will have to pay freight and other expenses, they cannot afford to have any problems. Remember to always stand behind your product – that means guarantee your animals in the event of any reproduction problems. You do not want your international client to have anything bad to say about your operation because in their country, they are a close community, and a bad comment can terminate your business in that country. We must also continue to improve upon IBBA’s annual events during the Houston Livestock Show; creating incentives that encourage foreign breeders to come to the U.S., will help expose more of our members to this market, as well as to better showcase the extensive selection of Brangus genetics available in the U.S. I would like to encourage our members to be part of our international events. We have a few events during the Houston Livestock Show that are very, very important to serious Brangus breeders. Houston is becoming the place to meet the whole Brangus community. In 2010 we had over 350 guests and the events will grow. Let’s work together to make this breed the most popular breed in the tropics. Participate with your presence and your cattle at the Brangus Round Up. Let’s forget our differences and just consider what really matters: The Brangus breed . IBBA está actuando para mejorar el reconocimiento de las virtudes de la raza Brangus en ese ámbito. A medida que los productores de esta región van incluyendo los atributos de calidad de la canal y de la reproducción a sus programas de cría, el Brangus tendrá mayores oportunidades de comercialización. Los cruzamientos de las razas cebuinas con el Angus comenzó en Sudamérica, empezando a principios de los 1940, con ganado de origen británico, que se llevó mayormente, a las zonas de pastoreo de la provincia de Misiones y los bajíos del Chaco en la Argentina; en esas estancias se sigue desarrollando la raza Brangus. La Asociación Brangus Brasileña fue fundada en enero de 1979 por un grupo de criadores de Cinco Cruzes de Bagé debido al crecimiento de la raza en Brasil. Los números del ganado Brangus en Sudamérica están aumentando rápidamente. Paraguay solamente ha aumentado un 38.5% en los últimos 17 años, conforme al último censo agrícola. La falta de conscientización y conocimiento del producto en algunos países es un gran desafío. Australian Brangus blends in US Genetics by Stephen Pearce Telpara Hills, Queensland Australia
Brangus cattle in Australia are currently experiencing a huge growth in popularity partly due to their incorporation of American genetics into the Australian herd. Brangus are high performing cattle well suited to Australia’s variable continent and have a excellent reputation for being a practical commercially orientated breed. Recent improvements in cattle feed supplement technology and market pressures for improved meat quality have allowed for Brangus to extend their territory into traditionally Brahman dominated areas and has created great opportunity for Australian Brangus producers. Furthermore, Australian Brangus breeders benefit from access to the finest Angus and Brahman genetics in the world and incorporate them into their breeding programs. Australian producers have recently recognized that there are a few areas including carcass quality, genetic predictability and performance data that are certainly in need of improvement to better meet these changes. When the Pearce family of Telpara Hills first visited Brangus operations in the US, they were astounded. Not only did they like the look

of the cattle, but were impressed by the years of research that had gone into producing Brangus with excellent carcass qualities, good spread of low birth weights to high growth, and generations of predictable breeding. The US Brangus had survivability to handle the harsh Australian environment while maintaining performance in terms of growth with the right maturity pattern and improved IMF and fat thickness. Historically there has been (and to a certain extent continues to be) some reservations towards US Brangus genetics in Australia. Many of the early imported genetics were not well suited being large frame 8+ frame score cattle that were hard doing. While an earlier perception held by some Australian producers was that some US seedstock producers pursued some traits to extremes From the outset, the need for cattle to meet and exceed the demands of commercial producers has been the central philosophy of Telpara Hills – not fads or fashions. Telpara Hills has been committed to building a customised herd of US donor females and sires to deliver on this Telpara philosophy. Telpara Hills has imported in excess of 1000 US embryos and has worked closely with ABS Australia, which has the ability to work independently of ABS USA, in marketing leading Brangus sires. Many of the high selling Australian Brangus records have been broken with US genetics which continue to be in high demand. IJBBA on the Horizon Gearing Up for the “Source of Champions” Sale Hello fellow Brangus breeders! I hope this article finds all of you well. This is a very busy time for the IJBBA Board of Directors. I will admit that I, being the lone “newbie” on the board this year, never imagined that the IJBBA board was so much work. This Board of Directors truly puts their blood, sweat, tears, but most of all their hearts into the Brangus breed. It is truly an honor to work with others that share the same passion and love for our great breed. Starting in May, the IJBBA Board of Directors has been concentrating on putting together our annual “Source of Champions” Show Heifer and Semen Sale. As many of you know this sale had become a great avenue for IJBBA members to purchase a top show heifer prospect. Not only that, it has also become an avenue for breeders to showcase their top genetics and young prospects. The sale is also very important to the IJBBA and the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). The commissions and donations help cover the ever increasing costs of hosting the NJBS. We are currently working to put together the best sale yet, and are still accepting show prospect nominations as well as semen donations. If you have a heifer that you think might be the caliber of heifer to put in front of the largest gathering of IJBBA members this year, please take a moment and let a board member, advisor, Tyler or myself know. We really want this sale to continue to be THE source for top quality show heifer prospects and need your help to do just that. The time is right for Brangus by Buck Thomason
There are tremendous opportunities for Brangus producers in South America. In my travels to Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay, I have seen cow herds that are primarily Brahman and Nelore. These herds could benefit immensely with the use of Brangus Genetics and improved production systems. As these counties expand their export markets, they will need to use more intense production systems and improved Genetics. In the four plus years we have been traveling to South America, we have seen significant changes. The better operations are using improved pastures and rotational grazing. They have begun to feed their animals before slaughter, not just relying on grass. These production systems and improved Genetics are making a huge difference in many of the herds we have visited. On a recent trip to Colombia, we had the opportunity to visit several Fincas which we had visited 2 ½ years ago. The improvement in several of these operations was significant. We were also fortunate to attend a field day at GanaderĂa Madrigal. Approximately 80 cattle producers came to the Field Day to hear speakers, tour the Finca and learn. They learned about new production systems and the advantages of Brangus cattle from several speakers. We attended the 25th Annual Finca Expo and had the opportunity to present trophies from the IBBA for the Grand Champion Brangus Bull and Female at the Show. Their Association appreciated the IBBA for recognizing their Champion animals. Brangus is a new breed in Colombia with the first cattle being imported from the
US in 1995. The breed continues to grow and improve. There are many things that have impressed me about the cattle business in South America, but I would like to focus on two. As I have attended shows or field days, I am always amazed at the number of young producers in the cattle business in these countries and how eager they are to learn. We do not seem to have the numbers of young people in the US who are in this business. The other item is their enthusiasm for the Brangus Breed. They are excited about Brangus cattle and how the breed is changing the cattle industry in their countries. We need to follow their lead and get excited about Brangus cattle and encourage young producers here and in other countries.

Existen tremendas oportunidades para los productores de Brangus en Sudamérica. En mis viajes por Argentina, Colombia y Paraguay, he vista hatos/rebaños de vacas que constan principalmente de Brahman y Nelore. Estos hatos/rebaños pudieran beneficiarse muchísimo usando la genética Brangus y los sistemas de producción mejorados. A medida que dichos países extienden sus mercados de exportación, ellos tendrán que usar sistemas de producción más intensivos y genética mejorada. En los más de cuatro años que hemos estado viajando por Sudamérica, hemos visto cambios significativos. Las operaciones de mayor calidad están usando pastizales mejorados y el pastoreo de rotación. Han comenzado a cebar/alimentar granos a sus animales antes del sacrificio, y no se fían solamente del pasto. Estos sistemas de producción y la genética mejorada están causando enormes diferencias entre los muchos hatos/rebaños que hemos visitado. En un viaje reciente a Colombia, tuvimos la oportunidad de volver a visitar varias fincas que habíamos visitado hace dos años y medio. El mejoramiento en varias de estas operaciones fue significativo. También tuvimos la buena fortuna de participar en un “día de campo” en la Ganadería Madrigal. Participaron aproximadamente 80 productores de ganado vacuno, que vinieron a oír a conferencistas, hacer una gira de la finca y a aprender. Aprendieron sobre nuevos sistemas de producción y de las ventajas del ganado Brangus, de varios conferencistas. Asistimos a la 25° Finca Expo Anual y tuvimos la oportunidad de presentar trofeos enviados por la IBBA para el Toro Brangus Gran Campeón y la Vaca Brangus

Brangus es una raza nueva en Colombia, con el primer ganado habiéndose importado de Estados Unidos en 1995. La raza continúa creciendo y mejorando. Son muchas las cosas que me han impresionado del negocio ganadero en Sudamérica, pero quisiera concentrarme en dos. Al haber asistido a exposiciones y días de campo, siempre me asombra el número de productores jóvenes en el negocio ganadero en esos países y lo entusiasmados que están por aprender. Nosotros no parecemos tener tantos jóvenes en este negocio en Estados Unidos. El otro punto es su entusiasmo por la raza Brangus. Están muy ilusionados con el ganado Brangus y la manera en que la raza está modificando la industria ganadera en sus países. Necesitamos seguir sus ejemplos y entusiasmarnos por el ganado Brangus y animar más a los productores jóvenes tanto aquí como en los demás países. bj

Global Brangus Roundup Was a Tremendous Success!
The 2011 Global Brangus Roundup was held Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg, TX. Dr. Joseph Massey, Andres Sanchez and Marcos Borges welcomed everyone to this year’s event and thanked all for attending. Everyone enjoyed their Texas style BBQ lunch while listening to the great music performed by the San Antonio River Coyotes. Following the meal and entertainment, Ian Galloway and Amanda Salisbury representing the Australian Brangus Association made a special presentation regarding the World Brangus Congress that will be held in Queensland, Australia, in May 2012 Of the 300 plus guests in attendance, at least 200 were international guests representing 13 countries. The attendance of the event clearly shows the worldwide interest in Brangus cattle and genetics. After the BBQ lunch and the special presentation, the program moved to the covered arena where there were 34 head of high
quality Registered Brangus Cattle on exhibit representing 20 different operations. There was an open bar surrounded by Industry partners and ranches with booth displays that received much attention. Attendees were able to visit with vendors as well as walk the alleys, look at cattle and converse with US breeders. Attendees had approximately an hour on their own to walk through the cattle, then the formal presentation began. Every ranch exhibiting was highlighted with one selected pen being talked about as the animals were moved through the display ring. This gave both the international and domestic guests a chance to view all of the cattle once more and learn a little bit about each breeder. Attendees were able to see well known and accomplished herd sires that have helped shape the Brangus breed as well young cattle sure to have an impact on the breed in the future. Este año ¡el “Round-up” global Brangus fue un enorme éxito! En 2011, el “Round-up” global Brangus se celebró el domingo, 6 de marzo en el recinto de la Feria del Condado de Fort Bend in Rosenberg, TX. WORLD BRANGUS COnGRESS JUST AROUND THE CORNER
The countdown is on, with less than 15 months until Australia hosts the World Brangus Congress for the first time. “It will be a great opportunity for breeders from North and South America to explore Australia – the congress itself will offer a chance to meet many from the Australian cattle industry, while the tours will allow visitors to experience cattle properties throughout eastern Australia,” said Congress Committee Chairman Ian Galloway. Despite some difficult weather conditions in host state, Queensland, over recent months, the Australian Brangus Cattle Association is looking forward to an exciting series of events for international visitors. Flooding and cyclones have affected almost 1/3 of the country, but plans are ‘full steam ahead’ for breeders and Congress planners alike. The Aussie World Brangus Congress will include an elite sale of registered led animals are in the pipeline, along with a technical

day showcasing the latest relevant breakthroughs in the industry, a show cattle program, informative visits to Brangus studs and social events for international guests and Australian members. “We look forward to sharing our great country – the landscapes, the amazing wildlife, the great cattle and that renown friendly Aussie hospitality,” Mr Galloway said. The congress will run alongside Beef Australia – the nation’s biggest and best beef expo held every three years in the tropical city of Rockhampton. Beef 2012 will take place May 7-12, 2012 with Congress events starting on May 6 with a ‘welcome’ event and finishing on May 11. Among other highlights planned for the Congress are a demonstration of campdrafting, Australia’s own horse sport, and a campfire dinner under the stars. Proposed pre- and post-Congress tours will give visitors a oncein-a-lifetime chance to experience Australia and its cattle industry, and includes a variety of options for international guests. A 7-day tour of New South Wales and Queensland includes arrival and welcome in Sydney, winery visits, visits to several New South Wales and Queensland cattle properties through a variety of unique Aussie landscapes. A shorter 4-day tour will take visitors from Queensland’s capital city Brisbane, and include the Australia Zoo, and catered visits to some of Queensland top Brangus studs. A five-day tour of Victoria and North Queensland tour will also be offered. Organisers urge overseas visitors to register their interest in their chosen tour/s early so as not to miss out. … the IBBA has a mobile web application tailored to smartphones? Currently designed for use on iPhone and Android handsets (as well as select Blackberry models), the mobile application, aptly named ChuteSide (http://www.int-brangus.org/ mobile), allows members to record calves, enter performance data and dispose of animals from their inventory. Additionally, you can view almost all of the animal’s details as if you were on the main IBBA registry website. Non-members can use the application to search for members and animals, retrieving contact information and maps to your ranch.

Are you familiar with QR Codes? They are 2-deminsional barcode-like images that contain information such as website addresses. These images can be printed on marketing materials and ads placed in publications. Using freely available smartphone applications (called QR Decoders) and your phones camera, users can decode the image and go directly to the encoded website. In the case of the IBBA and you, its member, every animal in the herdbook now has a QR Code image available for the owner to download and embed in their ads. This QR image will take your customer DIRECTLY to the ChuteSide application and display that animal’s information screen. Rising to the top of the Brangus bulls was DCC Mr Paladin 915U5, a September 2008 son of Blackhawk of Brinks 607M17. Paladin is owned and exhibited by Dillard Land and Cattle, Ltd, of Katy, Texas. Moonen Cattle Company exhibited Skyhawks Popeye to claim Reserve Grand Champion honors. The February 2010 bull is a son of Skyhawks Presidente and is owned by Skyhawk Brangus, Tyler, Texas, and Moonen Cattle Company, Abernathy, Texas. In the Red Brangus Bull division, Mr. PB Red Bull 521/09W, owned and exhibited by OB Ranch, Wharton, Texas, claimed the 2011 Grand Champion Red Brangus Bull title.
