We are in ALL aspects of the cattle business, not just seedstock producers. This gives us a viewpoint from conception to marketing to consumer in understanding what the industry needs. We have watched and listened to our customers and built a product with a shot of ear that ACTUALLY fits the entire country.

The lost art of the cattle business is balance. More programs are chasing extremes in one area or another. We are not. These cattle can AND will profit through multiple points of the supply chain on the terminal side WHILE still making a female that can acclimate and excel in various environments.

Weathering the season together

A Letter from the President

Friends and Fellow Brangus

Breeders, as we find ourselves in the heart of another summer, I’d like to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to all Brangus breeders across the country, as well as our many friends internationally, for a happy, healthy, and productive season. The work you do day in and day out is not only vital to the beef industry, but also a testament to resilience, care for the land, and deeprooted tradition.

Raising Brangus cattle requires dedication, perseverance, and a strong connection to both herd and habitat. The summer months bring long days, intense heat, and a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. Whether you're in the thick of hay production, managing pasture rotation, or preparing bulls for fall sale season, I hope this summer brings you favorable weather, green grass, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from seeing your hard work take shape in the pasture.

However, while we celebrate the strength and spirit of our Brangus community, we must also pause to recognize and reflect on the recent hardships faced by many of our fellow cattlemen and women, especially those in the Texas Hill Country.

The flooding that swept through parts of the Texas Hill Country earlier this summer brought devastating losses. Torrential rains, swollen rivers, and sudden flash floods have not only disrupted lives and livelihoods but taken the lives of neighbors, friends, and family members in a region known for its rugged beauty and tight-knit communities. My deepest condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones, homes, livestock, or a sense of safety in the aftermath of this disaster.

BRANGUS BREEDERS REPRESENT SOME

OF THE BEST OF WHAT AMERICAN AGRICULTURE HAS TO OFFER.

— GRADY GREEN

For those in our Brangus community affected by the flooding, know that you are not alone. We grieve with you. We support you. And in true agricultural fashion, we will rally around you. The Texas spirit is one of grit and generosity. In the face of destruction, we rebuild. In the face of loss, we remember, and we carry forward.

The Hill Country is a special place, not just geographically, but culturally. It holds a rich legacy of ranching, cattle breeding, and stewardship of the land. Many Brangus breeders call this area home, and their operations are woven into the very fabric of the region. It's hard to see that fabric torn, even temporarily. But if there's one thing we can count on in this industry, it’s the strength of community.

This summer, I encourage all of you, breeders, ranchers, and agricultural allies alike, to not only focus on the business of raising great Brangus cattle, but also on the business of raising each other up. Check in on your neighbors. Lend a hand where you can. Whether it's donating hay or a helping hand, offering pasture space, or simply making a call to check in on a friend who may be struggling, every little gesture of kindness counts.

The challenges facing ranchers today go well beyond weather. From volatile markets to rising input costs and ongoing regulatory concerns, it's more important than ever that we stand together as a unified front. And in times of tragedy, our unity becomes not just important, but essential.

Let us also take a moment to appreciate the resilience of the Brangus breed itself. Bred to thrive in harsh climates and fluctuating conditions, Brangus cattle are a symbol of adaptation and durability. They mirror the very values of those who raise them: strength, balance, and a quiet but undeniable determination. If ever there were a season to channel that spirit, it is now.

As summer stretches on, I wish you cool mornings, green pastures, and gentle rains. I hope your cattle are healthy, your grass is strong, and your spirits even stronger.

I hope your families find joy in the rhythms of ranch life, the sultry days, the fence-mending weekends, the late suppers shared after a long day under the sun.

And for those still reeling from loss, I hope this summer brings healing. May the land restore itself, may your herds recover, and may your hearts find peace.

In closing, let us remain grateful, not only for the cattle we raise, the land we steward, but especially the people who walk beside us on this journey. Brangus breeders represent some of the best of what American agriculture has to offer, and I am proud to stand with you in both celebration and sorrow.

Stay safe, stay strong, and may the rest of your summer be filled with health, hope, and plenty of blessings.

change, change, and more change

Let's Get Ready for an Exciting Year End

You’re holding the newly designed Brangus Journal — the first major refresh in recent memory. There’s no better time than now to showcase change and set a new direction for the Brangus breed as a business and as a community.

Brangus cattle continue to top markets like never before, whether it’s commercial calves bringing impressive profits for our cattlemen or purebred animals making waves at ranches across the country.

On the business side, we’ve introduced important updates to help streamline operations and serve you better. One major improvement is our new payment and billing system, Biller Genie. Early feedback has been outstanding, and we’ve already seen how this system makes our processes more efficient and accurate, from Total Herd Reporting (THR) payments to all association-related billing.

It’s also been a busy summer working closely with Neogen on advanced genetic testing tools. These new tests will help us make better-informed decisions and reduce errors in cattle selection. But let’s remember: the only way to truly breed great cattle is by combining both phenotype and genotype. Balance is key.

As we pursue improvements in marbling, carcass quality and red meat yield, we must never compromise the core strengths of Brangus bulls and females — their exceptional maternal traits, adaptability, and efficiency.

At the end of the day, we sell cattle by the pound, and so do our customers. Maintaining that focus ensures we continue to deliver what the market demands while preserving the traits that have made Brangus cattle a standout choice for decades.

This summer, my wife, daughter, and I traveled to Italy to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It was an incredible experience to see the changes they have made in agriculture over the years — how they value the land, use irrigation to maximize every acre, and thoughtfully balance tradition with innovation. What a change they have made since the days of the Roman Empire! We also had the chance to reconnect with some good friends. If you’re considering a trip, I highly recommend it.

Looking ahead, be on the lookout for our brand-new website. While it has taken longer than we originally anticipated, we’re confident it will be the most modern and user-friendly site in the industry. In addition,

get ready for our new ad campaign that will take the industry by storm, Built for Business giving new focus to the Brangus breed and its members. Also, keep an eye for our new digital platform launching this fall. It will give breeders even more ways to reach new customers while continuing to keep current customers engaged and informed.

I’m honored to walk alongside each of you as we navigate this exciting chapter for Brangus. Together with our board of directors’ leadership, we have the momentum, the vision, and the cattle to shape the future of the beef industry. Let’s keep challenging ourselves to innovate, stay true to our breed’s strengths, and support one another as we grow. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve in the coming year — and I’m confident the best is yet to come.

God bless our ranchers and farmers. God bless our military. And God bless America.

Rooted in Legacy, Driven by Genetics

Inside Draggin' M Ranch

Tucked away in the rolling pastures of El Dorado, Arkansas, Draggin’ M Ranch is more than just a cattle operation—it’s the culmination of years of determination, hard work, genetic vision, and a deepseated love for Brangus cattle. For John Milam, ranching wasn’t just a profession, it was a heritage that stretches back to the wide skies of West Texas in the 1800s, where his ancestors first made their mark as cattlemen. Today, that legacy lives on through Lisa, Lynne, Laura, and Rodney Milam, who carry forward their father’s vision with a herd of elite Brangus cattle, carefully bred to shape the future of the beef industry.

What began with a pair of Angus bulls and a handshake at Camp Cooley Ranch in 2005 has since evolved into one of the most respected Brangus programs in the country. Under the leadership of ranch president, Grady Green, Draggin’ M Ranch has grown into a powerhouse of genetic excellence. It is home to some of the most influential herd sires and donor females in the breed. With standout bulls like Empire, Admiral, Top Gun, Cash Flow, Headliner, Mr. Smooth, Visionary, Jackpot, Relentless, Express, and others, the Draggin’ M brand has become synonymous with performance.

“We approach our mating’s from a standpoint of balance and consistency. We strive to produce a genetic product that checks all the boxes in terms of performance, phenotype, fertility, longevity, and soundness without chasing fads or trends,” Green stated.

Recognized by fellow Brangus breeders for their focus and dedication to the breed, John Milam received the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) Breeder of the Year honor in 2015. In 2024, Green earned the same distinction, one of the few ranch managers to ever do so. Under Green’s direction over the past 16 years, Draggin’ M Ranch has grown steadily and is now the fifth-largest Brangus herd in the nation.

One of the keys to Draggin’ M Ranch’s success has been a valuable partnership with fellow Brangus breeders, first through the inception of GeneTrust and now through what has evolved into CDP Brangus. This marketing alliance has opened doors for Draggin’ M to market seedstock bulls, high-quality registered females, and commercial Brangus females across the U.S. and Mexico.

CDP Brangus is a partnership among several Brangus breeders and genetic collaborators, selling cattle through two annual sales hosted at the Draggin’ M Ranch headquarters in mid-March and mid-November. Each year they offer more than 400+ registered bulls, over 200+ registered Brangus and Ultrablack females, and 600+ commercial Brangus females, along with private treaty bulls and females available year-round.

When it comes to selling Brangus genetics that appeal to both seedstock and commercial producers, customer service remains a cornerstone. “Our philosophy is that if we can help you be profitable and successful, then you’ll keep coming back to our sales. We don’t want a customer for just one sale, we want a customer and friend for life. The relationships are what matter most,” Green emphasized.

The CDP Brangus bull development program is rigorous, with a strong focus on consistent, data-driven performance, longevity, soundness, and fertility. The goal is to provide customers with bulls that can service their herds, maintain condition, and recover quickly after breeding season. Bulls must pass multiple evaluations based on EPDs, pedigree, weights, ultrasound data, temperament, structural soundness, sheath scores, and phenotype. They are raised on a forage-based ration in large pastures with varied terrain, preparing them for success in any environment.

Draggin’ M Ranch remains committed to the future of the Brangus breed. Green currently serves as president of the IBBA Board of Directors and has contributed through roles on the Breed Improvement and Promotions committees. He also serves on the Southeast Brangus Breeders Board of Directors and previously on the Texas Brangus Breeders Association board.

Photos By: Sara Green

“Brangus cattle are the perfect combination of carcass and maternal value. They can shed off and thrive in tropical climates while also growing hair and enduring harsh cold weather,” said Green, “Brangus are the answer to many of the challenges facing the cattle industry today. Their fertility and longevity keep females in production longer, and the calves they produce consistently outperform their contemporaries from pasture to rail.”

“The long-term breeding program we’ve developed here at Draggin’ M Ranch continues to grow and prove its value. Our cattle are making an impact in other programs, and we’re excited about the promising progeny we have to market this fall. We truly believe the future is bright at Draggin’ M Ranch,” Green shared.

As Draggin’ M Ranch looks ahead, its foundation remains firmly rooted in the values that have guided it from the start—integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the Brangus breed. Through meticulous breeding, thoughtful stewardship, and a customer-first approach, the Milam family and Green have built more than a ranch. They’ve created a legacy of excellence that continues to shape the genetic landscape of the beef industry. With every calf born, every sale held, and every partnership formed, Draggin’ M Ranch stands as a testament to what’s possible when heritage meets forward-thinking vision.

BRANGUS CATTLE ARE THE ANSWER TO MANY OF THE CHALLENGES FACING THE CATTLE INDUSTRY TODAY.

— GRADY GREEN DRAGGIN' M RANCH PRESIDENT

Improving Red Meat Yield in Brangus Cattle

Brad Wright is the owner of Ranch Hand Analytics, a genetic and data consulting company founded in 2014.

Brad has a M.S. in Animal Breeding from Texas A&M University and works with breeders primarily across the southeast to better utilize data to make sound genetic selection and business decisions.

Red meat yield is a current hot-button topic in the beef industry. Current research at Texas Tech University, spearheaded by Dr. Dale Woerner, suggests that the current yield grade formula is only 15-20% accurate in determining actual red meat yield. Current grid systems continue to offer premiums and discounts based on a calculation developed in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Also, due to the drive for increased quality, larger carcasses, and economic advantages to more days on feed, harvested animals are fatter and yield less red meat. How did we get here and what does the future of beef production hold in store?

The primary drivers of the current yield grade calculation are carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (REA), and back fat (FAT). Based on this formula, significant time, money and research was dedicated to collecting these data points and increasing selection ability for these traits. The only technology currently available to collect these data points in live animals is ultrasound. The Brangus breed was an early adopter of ultrasound technology and the first to launch Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) for REA, FAT and intramuscular fat (IMF). Brangus breeders continue to be leaders in the industry in collecting and using carcass ultrasound records to identify genetically superior animals for carcass characteristics.

As more ultrasound records are collected and fed into the genetic evaluation, the accuracy of these EPDs continues to increase. By utilizing the REA EPD, Brangus breeders have effectively increased REA size. Recent data from the Brangus Value Project indicates a high correlation between the current ultrasound REA EPDs and carcass REA. As we look into the future, it is imperative to collect more carcass data. The breed improvement committee and the board of directors are already actively working to advance the ability to collect and store data from commercial cattle with known Brangus parents

(typically sires). As seedstock breeders, it will be important to build relationships with your commercial bull customers to aid them in DNA verification of pedigrees and the sharing of their carcass data if they are retaining ownership of their feeder calves.

IF BRANGUS BREEDERS UTILIZE ALL THE TOOLS AVAILABLE, THEY CAN BE POSITIONED AHEAD OF THE CURVE WHEN THE INDUSTRY FINDS A WAY TO PAY ACCURATELY FOR RED MEAT YIELD.

— BRAD WRIGHT

With more carcass data, the genetic evaluation team will be able to convert our current ultrasound EPDs to carcass EPDs. This advancement will also bring with it a carcass weight EPD. This continues to be a very economically important trait since that is the weight that is paid if selling feeder cattle on a grid. The beef industry has had many changes over the years, but one constant stays the same… pounds pay.

Getting back to red meat yield, while the Brangus breed and the rest of the beef industry has successfully increased ribeye size, we have failed to make the impact on red meat yield that is desired. The current research indicates that, while REA is important and still a premium sub-primal, overall red

meat yield is more heavily influenced by the round and chuck. There are currently no selection tools available for the round and chuck except for a cattleman’s eye.

As much as EPDs have impacted selection decisions, breeders must still use a judicious eye in selecting breeding animals for the next generation. A wide chest floor and a thick butt still mean a lot selecting an ideal beef animal. It is important that the animals used in seedstock and the bulls that are sold to the commercial sector accomplish the overall goals of the beef industry.

As always, it is also important to take a multi-trait approach to cattle breeding. Selection for any one trait can move that trait very quickly but could have negative consequences as well. As breeders work to also retain premium female genetics, selection only for growth, ribeye area and marbling can lead to decreased cow efficiency and decreased fertility.

Optimizing red meat yield in beef cattle is both an art and a science, requiring the thoughtful integration of genetic and phenotypic selection tools. Expected progeny differences provide a powerful forecast of genetic

merit, carcass data offers postharvest validation, and ultrasound technology enables real-time assessment in live animals. When used together, these tools create a feedback loop that accelerates progress, enhances profitability, and ensures the continued competitiveness of beef producers in a demanding market. By embracing data-driven selection strategies, the beef industry can confidently stride toward a future of abundant, high-quality red meat production.

As seedstock breeders, there is an obligation to produce genetics that maintain optimum performance and maximum profitability. Those cattle are fertile with plenty of growth and possess the carcass traits demanded by the beef industry. If Brangus breeders utilize all the tools available from EPDs, ultrasound, carcass data and visual appraisal, they can be positioned ahead of the curve when the industry finds a way to pay accurately for red meat yield. Brangus cattle are already receiving premiums on current grids and can be positioned to maintain or surpass these premiums when the industry discovers the new way to evaluate red meat yield.

TThe Brangus Brief

Market & Industry Insights

he beef industry is never boring. If you want to stay ahead of the game, stay knowledgeable of the industry’s current events. Part of our goal with this new Brangus Journal format is to help Brangus breeders be the best cattlemen you can be by equipping you with the information needed to stay ahead.

THE “MEAT” OF THE MATTER

Despite minor swings over the last couple of weeks, feeder cattle markets across all weight groups and regions have remained high, driven by a still-weak cattle supply and soft corn market. According to CattleFax, the composite beef carcass cutout (value of a beef carcass) across all quality grades is up $70/cwt over last year at this time, and up $116/cwt from two years ago.

The Choice/Select spread is a measure of the difference in price between a USDA Choice and a USDA Select carcass. This spread typically fluctuates seasonally, getting tighter in January/ February, and steadily increasing throughout the year. Right now, the spread is about $12, down from about $20 from the last two years at this time of year, driven in my

mind by one major issue made up of a few smaller issues: a tight supply of overfed cattle.

Fed cattle prices are sky-high, so the math says feed them as long as you can. Overfed cattle means more fat on an already heavier-than ever carcass, leading to an oversupply of fat trimmings and not enough lean trimmings to satisfy the U.S.’s most popular cut of beef: ground beef. This is what drives U.S. beef imports. It isn’t valuable middle meats like ribeyes, strip loins or tenderloins, it is lean trim to supply the ground beef market.

This is an area of expansion for the U.S. beef industry that focuses not only on the size of a ribeye, but on the total red meat yield of the entire carcass. Brangus cattle have long been known to have superior muscle confirmation compared to British breeds and other American breeds. High quality, high yielding carcasses are the way forward and Brangus will be leading the charge.

SCREWWORM UPDATE

If you haven’t heard about the screwworm threat making its way through Mexico, then you have been living under a rock the last several months. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins closed the border

to imported cattle from Mexico a couple of months ago to put political pressure on Mexico to do more to slow the spread of the screwworm fly. The most effective way to slow the spread is the use of the “Sterile Fly Technique” whereby sterile male flies are air-dropped into infected areas to breed with the female flies, causing them to lay unfertilized eggs that never hatch.

The screwworm is a nasty creature and has continued to work its way up through Mexico, now only 370 miles from the U.S. border at the time of drafting this article. If left unchecked with a “favorable” wind current (unfavorable for us), screwworm could be at the border in a month or so. A closed border has forced Mexico to step up its game in pushing back, but a fly does not know a closed border from an open one. If it makes it to the border, it will likely cross. USDA is doing all it can to secure funding to build more sterile fly facilities and refurbish old ones used in the 1960’s, but more help and funding is needed. This situation is very fluid so stay tuned.

MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR MARKET CALVES

Let’s end on a high note. The calf market is hot- really hot. Premium

cattle will always bring a premium, and commodity cattle will always bring commodity prices. I have said it before, and I will say it again. If you have the ability, DO NOT SELL STRAIGHT OFF THE COW, WEAN AND VACCINATE YOUR CALVES!

Selling value-added calves successfully requires a bit of a mindset shift. Those calves will be weaned and vaccinated one way or another by the time they leave your front gate, so I think of weaning and vaccinating as the bare minimum of what we should be doing as a commercial producer. Consequently, any unrealized “premiums” related to weaning and vaccinating, are avoidable discounts. The real question is, how much cash are you giving up, paying someone else to do it for you?

According to CattleFax, calves sold straight off the cow bring an average of $200 less per head than those weaned at least 45+ days, although most feeders and backgrounders prefer 60 days.

Furthermore, unvaccinated calves are discounted $80 per head; therefore, unweaned, and unvaccinated calves are looking down the barrel of a $280 discount

HIGH QUALITY, HIGH YIELDING CARCASSES ARE THE WAY FORWARD AND BRANGUS WILL BE LEADING THE CHARGE.

— KYLE CALDWELL

Now let’s get to the premiums. According to CattleFax, this year, calves with two rounds of vaccinations (2 rounds of 5-way, and two rounds of 7, 8, or 9-way vaccines) earned an average of $136/head premium over just one round of vaccinations. Moreover, cattle participating in an Age and Source verification program earned an average of $124/head premium over those not on an age and source program.

Here is the good news: the Brangus Vigor feeder calf program

through IBBA grants you access to all these premiums in a recognizable, marketable package. Cattle eligible for Brangus Vigor must be sired by a registered Brangus or Ultra bull, age and source verified, weaned 60 days, two rounds of vaccinations and originating from a BQA-certified producer. All these specifications are designed to help you, the producer, maximize the return on your market calves, all for a mere $5/head enrollment fee.

To capitalize on the growing demand for Brangus-sired feeder cattle, we will be hosting a weaned calf sale at East Texas Livestock in Crockett, Texas on November 11th, 2025. Whether you have five head or 500 head I want to hear from you, and I want to help you sell your calves in Crockett! Take full advantage of your high-quality Brangus bull genetics and maximize your payday! For more information on Brangus Vigor and the weaned calf sale, feel free reach out to Kyle Caldwell at kcaldwell@gobrangus.com

BYLAW CHANGE

The IBBA is asking for a very simple bylaw change and we need your help. The change is one word. Article 2 Section 2 of the bylaws state the annual meeting of the members of the Association must be held between January 1 and April 1. We want to change this so the annual meeting must be held between January 1 and September 1. Here’s why we would like to change these dates. The Long Range Planning Committee sent a request to the IBBA Board of Directors in February to have the flexibility to move the annual meeting around to gain more attendance. The annual meeting is often held at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This event is very crowded, and the hotels are extremely expensive. Brangus kids across the country are in school and it’s becoming more difficult to get them excused absences. We struggle to get a quorum every year due to the cost and terrible parking. The sale that is associated with this event has been moved out of the cattle barn and is very difficult to get to. The IJBBA LEGACY heifer has decreased in value every year due to poor attendance. We need a change. We would love to have our membership get together on an annual basis where the total focus can be Brangus.

This article and its publication date of August 1st will serve as the beginning date of notice and voting cannot be closed for at least 45 days to satisfy the notice clause in the bylaws. To vote, just log in to your REGISTR account. A pop up will appear that allows you to vote. A yes vote will allow the date to be changed from April 1 to September 1. We need 25% of the membership to vote and at least 2/3rds of those must vote yes for the change to occur.

Thank you for your continued support! Go BRANGUS!
