attle markets can change a balance sheet quickly. The past several years brought unprecedented
appreciation across the industry, building equity for producers who owned cattle and held them through the market climb. For seedstock producers, the opportunity brings another question into focus: How much of what the market has built are you prepared to protect? At CattleCon 2026, Landon Nelson, Vice President of Livestock Insurance at Farm Credit Services of America and Pat Shields of Capital Farm Credit discussed risk management in a high-value cattle market. Rather than focus on predicting where prices go next, the pair encouraged producers to consider what they have at risk, what they want to protect and how risk management fits into the larger business model. “The question is are you managing price risk or business risk,” Nelson asked. “You have to appreciate and understand what’s going on [in the market], then look back into your operation and understand what do I have at risk, what am I willing to protect, what am I okay with leaving open.” The answer can extend well beyond the price of the addition to your herd. Years of genetic selection, herd expansion, land investment and customer development represent the equity built over time.
BUILD A REPEATABLE PLAN Strong cattle markets in the past several years rewarded producers who remained open. Nelson pointed to the unusual conditions as an example of why a successful outcome does not necessarily equal a sound risk management strategy. “The best program the last three years was being wide open because it just went up,” Shields said, speaking to the prolonged impressive cattle markets. “But that’s

not the way it [always] is and that’s not risk management.” As margins tighten, producers can feel pressure to capture every available dollar. Nelson encouraged them to step back from the daily market and consider the longevity of the business. “The strongest risk managers are less focused on capturing the perfect price,” Nelson said. “Instead, they’re looking at their business, taking the base hits that everybody talks about and they’re focused on durability in their business over price perfection.” A repeatable plan can help producers avoid making every decision based on the latest market move. The right approach will differ based on herd size, economics and business goals. Size also matters when selecting a risk management tool. Shields described a customer who ran roughly 1,000 cattle but carried twice as many futures positions, creating exposure beyond the cattle actually owned. “You need to know what your plan is, what your operation is and match your price protection to what you’re actually doing in real life,” Shields said. The same principle applies across the operation. A risk management strategy needs to match the production and financial position behind it.
THE PRICE OF STANDING STILL which risks could materially affect the business. “If you look at a product or look at a broker or an insurance guy and you’re taking that step first before you ask yourself, ‘What am I expecting risk management to do for me?’ You might come up a little short,” Nelson said. The questioning must come before the tools.
TAKE EMOTION OUT OF THE DECISION KNOW WHAT YOU’RE PROTECTING Market volatility adds another layer to the conversation. Shields noted the January 2026 feeder cattle futures
One of the challenges in a rising market comes when protection looks like a mistake because prices continue rising. Nelson acknowledged producers may reach the end of a protection period and see the market moved higher,

moves, the difference represents a significant shift in how quickly prices can change. “That’s nearly a four day limit move, but now it’s not,” Shields said. Technology also moves information through the market faster than ever. Automated trading can respond to news and market signals almost instantaneously, creating price movement producers cannot always anticipate. At the same time, higher cattle values mean more capital tied up in the equation. “We’re not talking about people who made some
“Price risk is one of the few risks in your operation you can manage,” Nelson said. Removing some price risk can create flexibility elsewhere in the business. Producers may gain more room to purchase cattle, invest in land or make another capital decision without carrying every risk at once. The approach also can reduce the emotional weight of watching the market every day. “The real challenge with that line of thinking isn’t we’re optimistic and we’re making money on cattle. It’s that you’re emotional in the decision making every day,” Nelson said. “If you manage your expectation for what

The Equation to Build BRD Resilience in your Calf Crop It is a universal rule across cattle herds that every calf counts. overcome bovine respiratory disease (BRD) — the costliest and deadliest disease facing cattle producers.1,2 In my decades of experience as a cattle veterinarian, the herds disease have adopted a BRD resilience mindset and action plan. They work with their veterinarian to leverage innovations in three key areas: genetics, management techniques and disease prevention. Here are some observations on frequent practices they use for stronger, more productive, disease-resilient herds: 1. They focus on BRD prevention and realize vaccination is a critical component. Calves are born with a developing but not yet fully functioning immune system. Intranasal vaccines can help bolster calves’ immunity early in life while avoiding the potential risk of maternal antibody interference.
3. They leverage information related to genetic selection and animal breeding. Understanding and utilizing genetic selection and animal breeding information, especially as it relates to disease incidence, is impactful. It is vital to correctly interpret Expected this will impact the next calf crop. For commercial producers, understanding the importance of hybrid vigor is important as it pertains to calf health and performance. 4. They know BRD resilience starts with the mama cow, so they ensure the cow has adequate nutrition, has been dewormed and is up to date on her vaccinations. 5. They use a strategic deworming program. Internal parasites reduce feed intake and can compromise immune function, including response to vaccination. For spring calving herds, 4
Deworming cattle ahead of vaccination doesn’t have to mean a trip through the chute. Feed and mineral forms of dewormers Building BRD resilience equals a more productive herd
and bacterial pathogens that cause BRD. It can be given to nursing calves as young as one week of age. Use ALLFLEX® CleanVax™ nozzles and disposable shields (shown in photo) to help reduce product drip and ensure a hygienic and more even distribution of the vaccine inside the nostril. 2. They follow a preconditioning program to not only increase the value of their calves but to give them the best opportunity for the next production phase. A 2023 dataset of nearly 900,000 calves shows that those vaccinated with two doses viral vaccine, and at least one dose of Mannheimia haemolytica and/or Pasteurella multocida vaccine, and weaned at home for 45 days before delivery, added nearly $45 per head compared to those receiving only one dose of each of the three vaccines and weaned at shipping.3 The calves also weighed more.
Work with your veterinarian who knows your goals and the health challenges in your area to determine the practices and protocols for your herd. Putting a plan together to build resilience to BRD in your calf crop can result in healthier animals,

G+ AMBITION 919N15
Big Results Require Big
AMBITION
G+ Ambition 919N15, the $59,000 selection of Bar V Genetix, Sunshine Acres, and Foster Ridge at the 2026 GENEPLUS @ Chimney Rock Spring Sale, enters the arena after a successful breeding season at Bar V Genetix. Sired by the maternally driven LT CHOSEN 2132 Angus bull and a rising star in the CRC donor pen, SUHN’S MS BRICKHOUSE 919H14, with a picture-perfect udder and 3 generations of stellar dams behind her, including Ambition’s maternal granddam, 919C5 with a calving interval of 9 @ 369 days. Ambition’s numbers will not WOW you yet, as his sire is a complete OUTCROSS with no previous ties to IBBA’s system, but rest assured those will change as the first generation of his progeny hit the ground. Don’t miss your chance to get in on the next great one!
