The International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) and participating Brangus breeders are proud to present the sires in this directory. Having open access to some of the finest and most highly-proven genetic packages in the Brangus breed is an advantage to anyone who desires to produce the very best beef genetics possible. We encourage you to study the bulls carefully and to incorporate those that meet your criteria into your herd. All sires presented in this directory have been parent verified. IBBA registration rules require all AI sires to be parent verified before progeny can be registered. Additionally, with very few exceptions, the bulls presented here have genomically-enhanced EPDs. Genomic enhancement simply increases the accuracy of EPDs. Each breeder will decide what trait parameters to incorporate into their breeding programs. It is notable how many of the sires represented here can be used on heifers while simultaneously adding maternal, growth, and carcass merit. It is no longer necessary to compromise on other traits in order to get a level of calving ease considered safe for virgin heifers. Not only can you get your heifers off to a good start by calving early and easily, but they are likely to produce some of the very best calves in your herd. Breeders who routinely utilize AI are never surprised when a first calf heifer produces the best calf in the crop. The breeders who are offering semen on their bulls have made substantial investments over many years to produce sires of this magnitude. For a nominal cost, you can take advantage of their good work by using these bulls in your herd.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) provide an estimate of the genetic value of one animal compared to another animal in a defined population (i.e. Brangus). EPDs predict how future progeny of a sire are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other sires regardless of age or location of herd/animal. EPDs are calculated using statistical equations including performance data on the animal itself (actual weight records), actual performance data compared against contemporaries (contemporary ratios), information from its ancestry (sire, dam, grandsire, granddam, etc.), indirect relatives (brothers, sisters), direct progeny, and genetic testing. EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED) is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to first-calf heifers when compared to progeny of other sires. A higher number is desirable. BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) is reported in pounds as the difference in average birth weight of progeny compared to that of other sires. WEANING WEIGHT (WW) is reported in pounds and predicts the difference in weight of progeny averaged at 205-days of age to calves of other sires. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) is reported in pounds and predicts the difference in weight of progeny averaged at 365-days of age to calves of other sires. MILK (M) predicts the sire’s genetic merit for milking ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Milk accounts for the part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milking ability of the dam. TOTAL MATERNAL (TM) is reported in pounds as a reflection of a sire’s daughters milking ability and growth potential of their calves when compared to other sire’s daughters. CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM) is the difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. A higher number is desirable. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE (SC) is reported in centimeters and predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny compared to sons of other sires. U.S. RIBEYE AREA (REA) is reported in square inches as the prediction of difference in square inch ribeye area of a bull’s beef bound progeny compared to progeny of other sires. U.S. FAT THICKNESS (FT) is reported in inches as the prediction in difference of fat thickness on a carcass when measured between the 12th and 13th ribs of a bull’s beef bound progeny compared to progeny of other sires. U.S. INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (IMF) is reported in decimal terms representing percentage of intra-muscular fat, which is highly correlated with USDA marbling score, a major determinant of USDA quality grade. As with all EPDs, the absolute value has no inherent relevance, but is used to compare one sire to another. HEIFER PREGNANCY (HP) is reported in percentile units and represents the probability of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant during their first breeding season compared to daughters of other sires. STAYABILITY (STAY) is reported in percentile units and represents the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productively in the herd to at least six years of age compared to daughters of other sires. MATURE COW WEIGHT (MCW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature cow weight of a sire’s daughters when compared to daughters of other sires. TERMINAL INDEX (TI) is a bio-economic index which considers six growth and carcass-related traits, each trait weighted according to its heritability and economic importance in a feedlot situation with carcasses valued by weight, yield, and quality grade. The value is expressed in standard deviation terms, which can be difficult to comprehend. IBBA advises breeders to evaluate the percentile rank rather than the actual index value. FERTILITY INDEX (FI) is a bio-economic index which considers six traits, each trait weighted according to its heritability and economic importance in a cow-calf enterprise. ACCURACY Accuracy (ACC) values indicate the reliability of the published EPDs for an animal and can be defined as the relationship between the published or listed EPD and the “true” value of the number. Accuracy is primarily based around the information available to calculate a given trait. An older sire with more progeny, genomic testing, and relatives in the database is more likely to have a higher accuracy than an unproven, younger sire simply due to a greater amount of information available. Accuracy is listed on a scale from zero to one. The closer the accuracy is to 1.0, it’s more likely to represent the true genetic merit of the sire. For example, as progeny or genomic tests are recorded, a sire’s accuracy level should increase for reported traits, while his actual EPD numbers may fluctuate either up or down, or remain static, based on reported data. PERCENTILE RANK Based on percentages, percentile rank indicates where a bull’s EPD ranks him in the entire population of his respective breed. In all cases in this sire directory, the bulls are compared to “active sires,” or sires who have had progeny registered with IBBA recently. Black Brangus and Ultrablack sires are compared against the December 2020 EPD averages of the Active Black Sires list. The Red and Ultrared sires are compared against the December 2020 EPD averages of the Active Red Sires list. In all cases except birth weight, fat thickness, and mature cow weight, the higher the EPD value the lower the percentile rank number. The percentile rank, therefore, represents the percentage of bulls with higher EPDs – again, with the exception of birth weight, fat thickness, and mature cow weight. For example, the top 1% of BW for active Brangus sires is -3.1, meaning less than one percent of the breed records a birth weight of -3.1 or less. Conversely, a BW of 3.6 is in the 95th percentile, meaning 95 percent of the breed records a birth weight of 3.6 or less. For all other columns, lower percentile rank reports a higher EPD. The top 1% of YW for active Brangus sires is 91.8, meaning less than one percent of the breed records a yearling weight of 91.8 or more. The 95th percentile for active Brangus sires in YW is 17.7, meaning 95 percent of the breed records a YW of 17.7 or above. The 50th percentile represents the breed average for that given EPD trait. ACTUAL PERFORMANCE DATA BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) is recorded in actual pounds of weight measured within 24 hours of birth of the sire listed. WEANING WEIGHT (WW) is recorded in actual pounds of weight measured, averaged to 205 days of age, of the sire listed. YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) is recorded in actual pounds of weight measured, averaged to 365 days of age, of the sire listed. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE (SC) is recorded in centimeters of scrotal circumference measured on the listed sire at or around 365 days of age. CONTEMPORARY GROUPING A contemporary group is a section of animals that have had the same opportunity to perform being the same sex, born within 90 days of each other, managed alike, and exposed to the same environment. Ratios are given to animals within a certain contemporary group to evaluate how well an animal performed compared to his/her contemporaries. Contemporary group ratios are calculated on a particular animal’s traits compared against the average of the group. For example, 10 bull calves within a contemporary group weigh an average of 600 pounds at weaning. Bull A weighed 630 pounds, being 5% above the average, garnering him a ratio of 105. Bull B weighed 570 pounds, being 5% below the average, receiving a contemporary weaning ratio of 95.

CSS TESTING The Certified Semen Services (CSS) minimum requirements for disease control of semen produced for AI provides a minimum standard for the health monitoring and disease surveillance of bulls prior to entering isolation, during an isolation period, and throughout residency at an AI center. This is a comprehensive standard for those diseases proven to be a significant threat to be seminally transmitted by artificial insemination. Bulls listed in the sire directory will reflect either a “yes” or “no” to CSS testing certification. GENETIC TESTING Sires will feature a series of letters indicating the genetic testing that has been completed. All AI sires are required to be parent verified, or grandfathered, through DNA testing with the IBBA before being able to record registered progeny. All sires listed in the 2020 Brangus Sire Directory have been parent verified or grandfathered before being listed in the catalog. SEEKSIRE: provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It does not provide GE-EPDs. GGP ULD (30K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers imputations up to 50K status for calculation of GE-EPDs. GGP LD (100K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers a 100K status for GE-EPDs, allows for add-on tests, and detects markers that have the greatest influence on economically important traits and key traits that cattle inherit from their parents. GGP HD (150K): provides all USDA and globally recognized parentage markers for parent verification. It offers high-accuracy calculations of GEEPDs, allows for add-on tests, and is the ideal DNA solution for AI sires to provide maximum data. GENETIC DEFECT TESTING Sires who have been tested for genetic defects will feature their testing status as reflected by (genetic test)(free, carrier, or affected status). For example, an animal tested free for Developmental Duplication (DD) will be listed as DDF. Genetic defect testing, although highly recommended, is optional for Brangus AI sires, a lack of listing on a sire does not indicate he is a potential carrier or potentially free by pedigree, but simply that he has not had optional defect testing ran. STATUS ACRONYMS FREE (F): animal tested free of defect (ex. DDF) CARRIER (C): animal tested as a carrier with one copy of that genetic condition’s allele (ex. DDC) AFFECTED (A): animal tested as affected with two copies of that genetic condition’s allele (ex. DDA) GENETIC DEFECTS CONTRACTURAL ARACHNODACTYLY (CA): a lethal disorder linked to a genetic condition cause by a recessive mutation that affects Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. While CA-affected calves are born alive, and most can walk, suckle and survive, their upper limb joints (particularly hip, stifle, and hock) have a reduced range of motion. Affected calves appear normal by four to six months of age, but most perform poorly and are relatively tall and slender, with compromised feet and leg conformation. AKA Fawn Calf Syndrome. DEVELOPMENTAL DUPLICATION (DD): is a genetically transmitted simple recessive gene. When the gene associated with DD is paired (two copies of the same allele) in a mating, the results range from high probability of early embryonic death or the severe case of calves born with extra limbs. Those animals identified as carriers (only one recessive allele) show no visible signs of the genetic condition and lead a normal life. ARTHROGRYPOSIS MULTIPLEX (AM): is a lethal condition caused by

a DNA deletion event within the genome of Angus and Angus-influenced cattle and exhibits a recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves are known to be stillborn with a twisted spine and extended or contracted limbs. AKA Curly Calf Syndrome. NEUROPATHIC HYDROCEPHALUS (NH): is a lethal disorder linked to a genetic condition caused by a recessive mutation that affects Angus and Angus-influenced cattle. Affected calves are born dead with an extremely large cranium with little to no brain material or spinal cord. It is probable a large percentage of mortalities relating to NH occur through embryonic or fetal loss during gestation causing the defect to go unnoticed. AKA Water Head Syndrome. OSTEOPETROSIS (OS): is a lethal condition caused by a recessive mutation in Angus and Angus-influenced cattle and exhibits a recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves are typically stillborn prematurely and they often have a small body size, flat skull, impacted molars, shortened lower jaw, protruding tongue, and leg bones that are easily broken. AKA Marble Bone. OCULOCUTANEOUS HYPOPIGMENTATION (OH): is a non-lethal genetic condition with the genome of Angus and Angus-influenced cattle and exhibits a simple recessive inheritance pattern. Affected calves have eyes with irises that are pale blue around the pupil with a ten periphery and hair coats can have a slightly bleached color. While some affected calves can have sensitivity to light, they are believed to be otherwise normal functionally and physiologically.

ESTRUS SYNCHRONIZATION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BOS INDICUS-INFLUENCED FEMALES by Jordan Thomas, Ph.D., University of Missouri-Columbia assistant professor – state beef reproduction specialist and Carson Anderson, University of Missouri-Columbia graduate research assistant | INTRODUCTION | Bos indicus cattle are well-adapted to tropical and subtropical conditions. In comparison with cattle from Bos taurus breeds, they exhibit a high tolerance to parasites, solar exposure, high ambient temperature and relative humidity, and even low-quality forage diets. Due in part to these desirable traits, Bos indicus genetics are often incorporated into crossbreeding programs to capitalize on heterosis. Well over half of the world’s cattle inventory is managed in subtropical or tropical environments where Bos indicus breed composition is particularly advantageous. Moreover, 25% of the United States’ cow herd is located in southern states that lie in areas of high thermal stress. | CHALLENGES WITH ESTRUS SYNCHRONIZATION IN BOS INDICUS-INFLUENCED FEMALES | When choosing an estrus synchronization program for your operation, is important to acknowledge that Bos indicus females differ meaningfully from Bos taurus in several aspects of reproductive physiology. Due to this, it is widely accepted that the protocols regarded as “industry standard” in Bos taurus cows simply yield poor results in Bos indicusinfluenced cows or heifers. Bos indicus-influenced females have a lower rate of ovulatory response to administration of GnRH. Due to this, effectively synchronizing the estrous cycle of Bos indicus-

influenced females presents a bit of a challenge, as many estrus synchronization protocols rely on GnRH at the start of the protocol. Ovulatory response to GnRH depends on follicular maturity at the time of GnRH ad-ministration, as well as circulating concentrations of progesterone. High circulating concentrations of progesterone decrease LH pulsatility, limiting follicular development. Recently, a number of publications have suggested that circulating progesterone concentrations need to be taken into greater consideration when designing protocols for Bos indicusinfluenced females, as progesterone is a key indirect regulator of ovarian follicular development. Prior studies have indicated that GnRH response in synchronization protocol is significantly lower in cows having high circulating progesterone concentrations compared to cows with low, and Bos indicus appear to be more sensitive to these effects of progesterone than are Bos taurus. Detecting estrus among Bos indicus-influenced females may also be a challenge. Several studies have observed a shorter period of standing estrus among Bos indicusinfluenced females, with a high incidence of standing estrus occurring in late evening or at night. As a result, AI programs that rely on accurate estrus detection may be less efficient among Bos indicus-influenced females.

| CONSIDERATIONS FOR BOS INDICUS-INFLUENCED COWS | While some effective estrus synchronization protocols have been developed for Bos indicus cattle, the majority of the research in this area has come out of South America, Australia, and other areas outside of the United States. In these countries, protocols often rely heavily on use of estradiol products, such as estradiol benzoate and estradiol cypionate. Currently, estradiol products have not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine for use in estrus synchronization. Currently, only one protocol for Bos indicus-influenced cows is widely publicized: the Bos indicus PG 5-day CIDR, also referred to as “Bee Synch II.” This protocol is simply an adapted version of the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol used in Bos taurus cows, with two modifications: (1) PG is administered at the start of the protocol to induce luteolysis among the majority of cyclic cows and thereby reduce circulating progesterone concentrations during treatment, and (2) GnRH is not administered at the start of the protocol for control of follicular development, based on findings of poor ovulatory response to GnRH. The Bos indicus PG 5-day CIDR protocol has been found to be reasonably effective among Bos indicus-influenced females.

| CONSIDERATIONS FOR BOS INDICUS-INFLUENCED HEIFERS | Use of progestins in estrus synchronization protocols can effectively induce puberty early in the treatment schedule among a large proportion of peripubertal heifers. This is particularly beneficial among Bos indicus-influenced heifers due to the fact that Bos indicus-influenced heifers reach puberty at later ages than Bos taurus heifers. Due to this, a larger proportion of the heifer group may not be cycling at the beginning of the protocol. Use of a long-term progestin-based protocol may help induce cyclicity among a proportion of these heifers. Extensive evaluations of Melengesterol Acetate (MGA) and controlled internal drug release (CIDR) protocols in Bos indicus-influenced heifers suggest an opportunity for effective use of these approaches, with results similar to field results obtained among Bos taurus heifers when accounting for pubertal status.

| LAST CONSIDERATIONS | Although Bos indicus-influenced cattle differ from Bos taurus cattle, commercial expectations for the breeding program should not be lowered. Consider use of a short breeding season or market females that conceive late in the breeding season. Maintaining later-conceiving females extends the length of the calving season, results in fewer pounds of calf weaned, and results in poorer reproductive performance in the next year’s breeding season. 2021 BRANGUS SIRE DIRECTORY 13
