A FINAL FAREWELL FROM FLORIDA

As I sit down to write my final letter for the Brangus Journal, I started thinking over my last six years on the board. How fast time flies! During my tenure, the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) has faced numerous challenges, but also many

great successes.

When I was first elected to the board, Dr. Tommy Perkins had just been hired as the new executive vice president (EVP) of the association. In the past six years we have seen finances steadily improve. The past year has been rough for everyone, mainly due to the computer registry system not functioning as it should, resulting in unforeseen programming costs to bring it to where it is today. The good news is we, IBBA, have ample reserves to use if an investment or additional expense(s) arise in the future. I need to thank the IBBA Finance Committee chairman, Mike Weathers, for spending countless hours rectifying our books. His service is deeply appreciated and a big thank you is owed to him.

Five years ago, architectural and engineering inspections determined that our beautiful main office building had structural problems with repairs not economically feasible. The search for a new building and the sale of the old became a top priority for the board. Much to our surprise, a buyer for the old site was found quicker than anticipated. The acquisition of the new building went forward. It was studied, approved, purchased, and closed. The sale and purchase left us with a new building renovated and paid for, with well over $185,000 in a perpetual maintenance fund. Dr. Perkins, Bill Davis, and Mike Vorel spent a lot of time guiding this to a conclusion.

A big “thank you” to all that were instrumental in this project.

The IBBA and the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA) appear to be drawing closer to the common, collaborative relationship we all dream of. Working together to build the Brangus breed is the ultimate goal. Their foundation heifer raffle at Houston is continually growing in funds, and I encourage each of you to purchase a ticket from the IJBBA board before or at the Houston Livestock 6

Show & Rodeo. The junior leadership camps are helping expand the view of the beef industry, and more importantly, giving our juniors a broader view of agricultural life. Thank you to Brandon Belt and Danny Farris for serving many years as the junior representatives on the IBBA board, and we hope the junior future continues to burn bright. The juniors are our future.

In late 2018, Dr. Perkins resigned. The offer of an endowed chair at the West Texas A&M University Animal Science Department was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Thank you, Dr. Perkins for your leadership and friendship.

At that point, then president, Doyle Miller, appointed two committees that would soon have a long-lasting effect on the future of the IBBA. Operating simultaneously, the dedication and focus of the IBBA Long Term Planning Committee and the EVP Search Committee was unmatched. Members of committees spent countless hours traveling, attending meetings, participating in conference calls, and much more to help shape the future of the organization. The results were spectacular.

When we interviewed Dr. Wilkes as a potential candidate for the EVP position, we knew he was the right man for the job. Of course, he had a wealth of experience and obvious beef industry knowledge, but primarily, he had brought in projections on potential growth of the Brangus breed, exhibiting how relationships and a good plan could help producers sell more bulls and females. Ironically, (or maybe not?), two members of the IBBA EVP Search Committee had made growth projection estimates that matched almost identically to Wilkes’ plan.

As for the IBBA Long Term Planning Committee, I cannot begin to express how much time and thought this committee has put in under the leadership of chairman, Tracy Holbert. The committee has focused on advantages, challenges, goals, and a pathway to growth as a Brangus breed. The discussions were relevant, important, and equally deliberated by everyone on the committee. In my opinion, this is the most productive committee I’ve ever had the opportunity to be a part of and I want to thank all of you for your time!

UNA ÚLTIMA DESPEDIDA DE FLORIDA

Al sentarme para escribir mi última carta para el Brangus Journal, empecé a pensar de mis últimos seis años en la Junta Directiva. ¡Cómo vuela el tiempo! Durante mi ocupación, la International Brangus Breeders Association (la IBBA) enfrentó numerosos desafíos, pero también muchos éxitos.

Cuando primero fui electo a la Junta Directiva, el Dr. Tommy Perkins recién había sido contratado como el nuevo Vicepresidente Ejecutivo de la Asociación. En los últimos años hemos visto un mejoramiento constante en nuestras finanzas. El último año ha sido difícil para todos, principalmente debido a que el sistema computacional de registros no estaba funcionando como debería, resultando en costos imprevistos de programación para llegar a donde se encuentra hoy. La buena noticia es que, IBBA tiene amplias reservas que pueden usarse si en el futuro, surge una inversión o gastos adicionales.

Es preciso que le agradezca al Presidente del Comité de Finanzas, Mike Weathers, por pasarse incontables horas rectificando nuestros libros. Le agradecemos infinitamente por su servicio ¡gracias!

Hace cinco años, inspecciones arquitectónicas y de ingeniería determinaron que nuestro bello edificio principal de oficinas tenía problemas estructurales; y su reparación no fue económicamente factible. La búsqueda de un edificio nuevo y la venta del edificio viejo, fue una prioridad para la Junta Directiva. Fue grande sorpresa cuando se encontró un comprador para el sitio viejo antes de lo que anticipábamos. La adquisición del edificio nuevo avanzó, fue estudiado, aprobado, comprado y se concluyó la transacción.

La venta y la compra nos dejó con un edificio nuevo renovado y totalmente pagado, con un fondo de mantenimiento perpetuo de bien más de US$ 185,000. El Dr. Perkins, Bill Davis y Mike Vorel se pasaron mucho tiempo guiando este proyecto hasta su conclusión. Un enorme “gracias” a todos los que participaron en este proyecto decisivo.

La IBBA y la Asociación Internacional de Jóvenes Criadores de Brangus (IJBBA) parecen estar más unidos hacia la verdadera relación simbiótica que todos queremos. Trabajando juntos es la meta

primordial. Most importantly, as members, it’s time to work together to move the association forward. If you have time or talent, please volunteer for a committee.

Please donate to the IBBA Foundation so funds can be used for research or youths. Brangus cattle have tender meat, are fertile, healthy, adaptable, docile, and long lived. That’s a pretty good list if you ask me, and it’s time to show off our cattle.

A special thanks to all the committee chairmen this year: Chris Hepinstall, Breed Improvement; Mike Weathers, Finance; Doyle Miler, EVP Search; Tracy Holbert, Long Range Planning; Danny Farris, Commercial Marketing; Allen Goode, Show and International; Jeremy Jackson, Promotion; and Shiloh Hall, Awards.

Thank you to each of you for your friendship and love of the Brangus breed. Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the board and as president this past year. It is an honor to be accepted and included in such an outstanding group of people every year. The directors I have served with are people of integrity who have the association’s best at heart. I have deep faith in the future of the IBBA, and look forward to the next board of directors providing leadership to tackle challenges and move the association forward.

Don’t forget our annual meeting in Houston, Texas, on March 5th, and the Brangus Summit in Orlando, Florida, June 7th - 9th. I look forward to seeing you at one or both events.

Y con respecto al Comité de Planificación a Largo Plazo, no puedo ni empezar a expresar cuánto tiempo e infinitas ideas este comité ha tenido bajo el liderazgo del presidente del mismo, Tracy Holbert. El comité ha enfocado ventajas, desafíos, metas y un camino de crecimiento para la raza Brangus. Las discusiones fueron pertinentes, importantes e igualmente deliberadas por todos en el comité. En mi opinión, éste es el comité más productivo en que yo jamás he tenido la buena suerte de participar, gracias a todos ustedes por el tiempo regalado.

Más importante aún, como miembros, es hora de trabajar juntos para mover la Asociación hacia el futuro. Si usted tiene tiempo o talento, por favor, sea voluntario para un comité. Sírvanse donar a la Fundación IBBA para que fondos se puedan usar para la investigación o los jóvenes. El ganado Brangus tiene carne tierna/suave, sus animales son fértiles, de buena salud, adaptables, dóciles y longevos. THE GRADE BULL IS BECOMING A THING OF THE PAST —

Good Riddance!

Those of us with even a little gray hair can were not enough registered bulls available to cover remember the days when there were very few bull that many cows. I have an easy-to-remember formula sales where 200 bulls were offered. Where I grew up that I use to estimate the number of new bulls in southeastern Wyoming, there were none. The first needed each year by the U.S. beef industry. If one 100 head bull sale in that area didn’t happen until assumes that the average bull covers 25 cows per the early 80s. Now, in that little corner of the state, year, that means there are four bulls per 100 cows. If there are a half dozen bull sales with over 100 bulls, the average breeding life of a bull is four years, that and a couple with over 200, plus some private treaty means that one of the four bulls covering 100 cows marketers selling over 300 bulls per year. And, they needs to be replaced annually, on average. Therefore, all sell pretty well. From the area where I grew up, it my cowboy math says that we need one new bull is less than a two-hour drive to get to a 600 head bull per year for every 100 cows, or thereabouts. International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) made a move years ago to Total Herd Reporting (THR), which is essential for collecting data and computing EPDs for important fertility traits such as stayability. Forty percent of the BEEF survey respondents want such fertility and longevity indicators. Frankly, more of them should respond this way since 85 percent of the respondents raise their own replacements. Translation: we need to market our maternal performance indicators more aggressively. We would benefit if more bull customers demanded such information.

Having a drought plan that is created while a drought is occurring is not a plan, but rather a reaction. The most thorough and well thought out drought plans come when the grass is green, the creeks are flowing, and the water tanks are full.

Formulating a plan when the times are good allows producers the ability to make decisions without the emotions of a drought influencing those decisions.

Too often, while in a drought, emotionally influenced decisions are made which can affect the operation’s ability to survive and prosper through dry times.

The first instinct of many producers is to hold together as large of a portion of the cowherd they can. As this is a priority, protecting the resource, that are the soils and grass, should come first. While in a drought, it is easy to graze every available blade of grass that the cows can pick off. This strategy may keep the cowherd on the ranch, but, in turn will make for a longer turn around once the rains do start to fall again and damage a valuable resource. If we can keep adequate forage coverage on our soils during droughtlike conditions, then we will be able to protect the soils from erosion, keep native grasses in the forage mix (which will collect more rainfall when it does occur), reduce soils temperatures, and most importantly recover from the drought more rapidly.

The first thing you need to establish are the parameters for measuring the drought in your area.

offices should have accurate precipitation records for your area. This will be the easiest way to track where you are relative to the long-term average rainfall patterns. However, the amount of rainfall may not be the most important factor but rather the timing of the rainfall. The timing of the rainfall in reference to when the local native grasses mature has as much impact as the amount. Basically, if the moisture does not come prior to plant maturity then the rain will not have as great of an impact on the growth structure.

For example, an inch of rain that falls in July in Texas will not have as strong of an impact on the warm season grasses that grow there as compared to an inch of rain that falls in April. The amount and timing of rainfall, especially through the spring of the year, will determine the remainder of the growing seasons forage potential. If you typically receive 50 percent of your annual rainfall by July 1, but June rolls around and your operation has only received 30 percent, then you should already know your annual forage is going to be below average.

When formulating a plan, take the amount and timing of the rainfall into consideration. For example, your plan could be: if you do not receive more than 50 percent of your typical rainfall by July 1, then the calves will be weaned early that summer, reducing the cow’s nutrient and feed requirements. This parameter will be different for every operation but is an example of a starting point. The chart that is accompanying this article lays out an example drought plan. efficiency items as shortening your calving window, lowering the average age of your breeding herd, or removing hard keepers (cows that have higher maintenance levels) are all goals, among others, that the operation can achieve through a drought plan.

As the drought progresses, so should your aggressiveness in reducing the grazing pressure on the land. The operation that sells first (prior to the liquidation phase), once the indicators tell them to do so, usually receive a higher price for their cattle, putting more money in their pocket to be prepared to re-stock the land. At the same time, that same operation is staging themselves for a quicker comeback as they are protecting their natural resources, the land and grass, from damage that can be suffered during a drought. Being ahead of the curve with a drought plan when it applies to culling animals and protecting the resource is usually the most beneficial.

Feeding your way out of a drought usually does not pay off, unless the calf market is strong enough to allow it. Feed costs typically increase exponentially as hay and row crops also suffer during dry periods, thus reducing feed supplies. Attempting to feed your way out of a drought can be dangerous as no one really knows when a drought will end, and you get into a pattern of telling yourself, “This is the last load of hay that we are buying” or, “We are only feeding the cows for two more weeks then we are getting rid of them” and you keep prolonging the effects. Feeding your way out of a drought should not be done unless you have a nucleus of genetics that you must keep together.

generations working towards, and therefore will opt to feed their way out of a drought if grass becomes too scarce. However, commercial operations cannot necessarily raise the same argument. Many operations have worked very hard through their selection and culling processes to improve their genetics, ridding the operation of those genetics would eliminate years of adaptation and hard work. In most cases, depending on the severity of the drought, operations will likely be able to hold together the core group of the cowherd through the entirety of the drought, keeping those genetics in the operation. If anything, by reducing your genetic pool through culling you can strengthen the influence of those core genetics that the operation has selected for by proliferating those genetics in the cowherd through expansion once the drought subsides. The same can be said for water.

Depending on the water sources that an operation uses, water can be a limiting factor in a drought. Very rarely does it make economic sense to haul water to cattle.

Some droughts can last long enough that removing all grazing pressure from the land is inevitable. During the drought that occurred early in the last decade, many operations were forced to do so, especially in the southern plains. This is a harsh reality, but in the long term may be the best option that the ranch has for the longevity and viability of the operation to come in the years ahead.

A proactive measure, such as stockpiling standing forage, is a way we can help position ourselves to economically provide feed to the cowherd during short-term dry periods. During wet periods, stockpiling additional forage is easy to do. This stockpiled forage can easily be supplemented with a protein source to create a solid, valuable feed source if needed. The same can be said about stockpiling hay reserves. This is not contradicting the above statement, but, rather feeding hay to supplement our forage is different than feeding hay as an only source of feed. Maintaining only short periods of supplementation will help avoid becoming dependent on these outside sources.

The odds favor that weather patterns are transitioning from an El Niño to a La Niña pattern, which suggests that drier conditions, compared to the last few years, are possible for some regions of the country. Formulating a written drought plan while the grass is green is the most effective way to eliminate the emotion within the decision-making process. Having the plan on paper can help hold operators accountable and make logical systematic decisions. The saying, “Plan for the worst and hope for the best”, is the epitome of establishing a drought plan.

Budler says black is the dominant color for about 70 percent of Brangus worldwide. “There are two very different options the breed offers,” Budler says.

“Both of them are very viable depending on what the resources are and what one’s objectives are.”

Solving the export puzzle Exporting genetics isn’t easy. You need to find a buyer. Deals must be made. Semen or embryos must be collected and safely shipped. There are documents upon documents upon documents required.

It’s a big hassle. It’s tedious. And it’s risky.

That’s why many Brangus breeders selling in the international market use companies that specialize in exporting semen and embryos overseas. Some companies, like Trans Ova, go the full gamut from matching genetics from seller to buyer, collecting the semen or embryos and taking care of the shipping and handling of the product to destination. They will even transfer embryos for the buyer according to the importing country’s protocol. Trans Ova will do the complete process, or any part of it, according to the buyer’s needs.

Exporting embryos and semen is a task that is difficult for most breeders to master.

“I think most American breeders work toward their strengths. They’ve got the genetics. Sometimes, they’ve got the market,” Budler says. “And, then, they’ll use a company like Trans Ova to do the artificial insemination and embryo work for them and maybe even do the logistics and shipping for them.”

Then, there are companies like American Genetics Export Service, whose sole purpose is to provide import and export logistics services to buyers and sellers. Working with the buyer and the seller and the consolidation team, Cherie Derouin, owner, says her company pulls all the pieces together to ensure a successful shipment, including: • Provide the buyer with the necessary information for their import permit, whether it is the pedigree, DNA, or advanced copies of the health certificate.

• Remind the buyer to check with his/her local breed association regarding any documentation they will require to register any offspring born, such as a specific DNA test on the sire or dam, or pedigree.

• Assist in finding a customs broker at the destination to handle receipt of the shipment.

“Working with the buyer and understanding the country we are shipping to is one of our missions,” Derouin comments. And that’s where things can get difficult.

For example, she says each country has its own laws for acceptable destination airports and shipping documentation requirements for shipping semen and 26

embryos. Some have requirements that the importer must meet just to be allowed to import, such as having their farm, or their company registered as an importer.

“Nearly all countries have health protocols negotiated between the governments involved that identify the requirements for the farms supplying genetics, the requirements the collection center must meet, and the health testing or treatments that the donors must meet for their genetics to be exportable,” Derouin says. Then, when the import permit is issued for a specific shipment, it may have additional requirements that must be met.

Laws and regulations are different for semen, embryos, and even live animal exports. “Regulations can change without notice,” she warns, “so it is important to always review the regulations on USDA’s website and compare them against the import permits received from the foreign country to make sure exports are in compliance.”

Many pieces of a puzzle must fit together to ensure successful shipping of semen and embryos, according to Derouin, including the following: • Although documentation requirements change from country to country, a breeder should always be prepared with a copy of the donor’s registration certificate, an extended pedigree, and the blood type or DNA certificate. Countries vary on the type of DNA tests required to register offspring, so check with the breed association in the destination country to make sure the imported genetics will meet their requirements.

• Collection centers would be responsible for providing the export health certificate endorsed by USDA and generally, will need to provide a motility certificate for semen and the flush/freeze sheets for the embryos. The health testing must meet the requirements for the importing country.

• The exporter of record is responsible for preparing the commercial invoice, the packing list (showing the location of all genetics in a consolidated tank), and a Certificate of Origin if the importing country requires it.

• The freight forwarder prepares the air way bill and any other internal documentation required for filing customs or the U.S. government.

If all of this sounds complicated, it is. And this is just a brief overview of the process! That’s why many cattlemen stay with their expertise, of breeding cattle, and turn the exporting side of the business over to the pros.

“There are many different types of testing required for each country and understanding this will help reduce any unnecessary health testing costs,” Derouin (continued on page 30)

RESTRUCTURES AND REFOCUSES

by Macee Prause, IBBA Director of Genomics & Research The Federation of International Brangus Associations (FIBRA) is an association familiar to some, new to others, but important to all. FIBRA was established in 2007 to select the host country for the World Brangus Congress, held every two years. As the Brangus world becomes increasingly integrated along with the global beef industry, the discussions within the FIBRA meetings are leading to the need for a more defined structure and agenda.

Representatives from Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and the Unites States met in Fort Worth, Texas, December 2nd through 4th, 2019.

The conference was hosted by the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) International Committee. During the conference, the country representatives discussed ways to better the FIBRA organization and, ultimately, increase the market for Brangus cattle globally. At the conclusion of the three days, the conference left with a comprehensive proposal for the organization, financing, objectives, and agenda for the future of FIBRA. One of the major topics discussed was the structure of FIBRA and creating a governing council and central administration. The country representatives decided upon having standing committees for viable issues such as trade protocols, genetic development, promotion of Brangus, and World Brangus Congress (WBC).

“The 2019 FIBRA meeting was a series of in-depth discussions and idea generation that resulted in actionable proposals that will be presented at the 2020 FIBRA meetings during the World Brangus Congress hosted by Argentina,” IBBA International Committee chairman, Allen Goode said. “Here, our goal is to have these plans adopted and implemented so that the country and association membership can begin working in an organized and collaborative manner on the initiatives that will be beneficial to the entire Brangus world.”

FIBRA council members discussed the possibility of a global genomics evaluation. John Genho of Neogen facilitated the dialogue explaining the range of scenarios and necessary considerations to conduct an evaluation of this scale. Further discussions continued about sharing genetic marker weightings 34

between countries in order to complete one global genetic evaluation that would be standardized across countries. This would develop and promote a “One Brangus” global breed and brand.

“The most important component to the new proposed structure of FIBRA will be the FIBRA Council, whereby each member country will have representation at the discussion table,” Goode explained. “It is in this forum that we want to work on cross border initiatives that position the Brangus breed for strong growth and genetic development.”

During the conference, a joint meeting was held with the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) to educate members about import and export protocols from the United States. TDA staff gave a presentation over Texas’ export locations and encouraged everyone to build a connection with other countries’ representatives. The different Texas import/export facilities shared contact information and offered future tours and partnership opportunities to make the process smoother for those involved. Additional guests represented the Canadian Consulate of Dallas, Neogen Genomics, and Texas A&M AgriLife Research.

Everyone was provided the Brangus experience with a visit to Indian Hills Brangus for the closing session and presentation.

“It is vital that all FIBRA member countries believe that we, and our breed, are stronger when we work together,” Goode stated. “There are considerations of economies and governments, but ultimately, when all strive for a common objective, we can achieve so much in terms of research, genetics, brand, and global market share.”

Country representatives discussed ways to grow FIBRA and encourage participation from breeders in developing countries where there is not an established Brangus registry. The discussion was made to offer incentives to contributors through global representation, technical research, collaboration on genetic development, shared data, promotion, and assistance in the development of emerging associations.

La FIBRA se estableció en 2007, para seleccionar el país huésped para el Congreso Mundial Brangus, que se da cada dos años. Mientras que el mundo del Brangus está constantemente aumentando a integrándose junto con la industria global de la carne de res, las discusiones dentro de las reuniones de FIBRA están dirigiéndose hacia la necesidad de una estructura y agenda más definida.

emerging countries. FIBRA and its members should be the organization to support new associations becoming organized in countries where there are breeders and market interest, but do not have the structure to take off and thrive,” Goode affirmed.

“Next, with the rapid advancements in genomics and its use in the development of high quality protein and the animals that produce this product, we need to educate our breeders and share data across borders in an effective manner that will enable Brangus to be viewed as producing a consistent, high quality product.”

Ultimately, the growth in FIBRA will increase the demand for Brangus genetics globally. The next meeting of FIBRA will be at the 2020 WBC held in Argentina this April. We hope to see you there and welcome you into the global Brangus family.

“Every serious Brangus and Red Brangus breeder should be interested in following the workings of FIBRA and becoming involved,” Goode said. “In the proposed structure of FIBRA, there will be a standing committee comprised of representatives of all country associations to work on major initiatives. I expect that this will lead to additional committees and initiatives in our respective home countries where the sleeves will be rolled up and the detailed work will be done. There are opportunities for every breeder and member to be involved in FIBRA, just as there is with our own IBBA.”

the lifetime achievement award in the exhibition of brangus cattle

In 2019 the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) Show Committee instituted a new honor to recognize a lifetime of excellence in herdsmanship, achievements in the exhibition of Brangus cattle, and contributions to the Brangus breed and the purebred beef industry. This award is to be called, “The Lifetime Achievement Award in the Exhibition of Brangus Cattle.”

A group within the Show Committee was tasked with proposing names for whom this inaugural honor would be bestowed upon. When the group came back to the committee, there was only one name and one man, Jake White.

I never had the honor of knowing Jake, so I spoke with other stalwarts of our breed who knew him and worked with him. The characterizations were consistent and the stories numerous.

“The finest cattleman of my lifetime.”

“He expected your best and your most.”

“A man of true cow sense.”

These are some of the statements I heard while getting to understand White’s legacy.

He is described in every conversation as a man of honesty and an all-time professional, both in business and in the show ring. It seems that a major advantage to his success was his true ‘cow sense.’ Myron Saathoff stated, “If you handed him a haltered animal, within minutes, he knew the animal’s personality, its structural faults, and all of its outstanding features.

With this knowledge and his famous show stick, he would show that animal, and most of the time, he was the first one coming out of the ring.”

Mark Cowan remarked, “When Jake entered the show ring, he intended to win. There was no showing up to participate.”

Charlie Tiner worked for Jake for a number of years, first in Mississippi, and then at Blazer Brangus.

He said it was an honor to work for Jake, as he expected the most from those that worked for him; from raking stalls and aisles, to your daily routine, to exhibiting cattle around the country. When you gave him your all, he gave you his all through support and mentorship.

Tiner shared the story of a class at the National Show of Merit, which was at that time held at the Dixie National. “Jake had recently started at Blazer Brangus, while his son Randy, was the manager at 42

another Brangus operation in Mississippi. Randy had the heifer to beat. In the first pull, Randy was first, and Jake was fourth. Not agreeing with the judge’s assessment, Jake pulled out of line and moved into the second hole. He stuck his heifer, like no heifer had ever been shown, and convinced the judge to place him in second,” recalled Tiner.

As a cattleman, he was well known in the show circles of several breeds. As a man of integrity and character, he never wanted nor expected favors from a judge; he only wanted and expected a judge’s honest opinion of the animal.

In his career he showed Limousin, Angus, and Brangus. Not many showmen can say that they dominated the show rings of three different breeds.

He showed in National and International Shows, so his expertise with cattle was well known in circles at the highest levels. He and his beloved family were fixtures at the shows and a treat and privilege to be around. His knowledge, unassuming and quiet demeanor in the show ring and out of the show ring made him a unique individual, and a master of the industry. These are traits that we should all try to follow and emulate.

It is for this life, these achievements, and the example he set for the generations after him, that the IBBA was honored to present the IBBA Lifetime Achievement Award for the Exhibition of Brangus Cattle to Jake White at the Western National in Oklahoma City last fall where his son, Randy, and granddaughter, Lindsey, accepted with pride.

The Pearce family’s selection criteria remains as rigorous now as it was 20 years ago, “to go through the trouble and expense of importing genetics, the animals must be top-shelf,” proclaims Brittany. I have made great friends over the years traveling to different countries with FIBRA and World Brangus Congress gatherings,” he says. “We have done great work eliminating the “clicks” and have been able to focus on breeding and selecting great cattle.”

“I could never imagine my operation without semen and embryo imports from America and Australia,” Swart remarks. “It’s just the way to go. A breeder can identify one or two cows with superior genetics and flush them, getting mass genetics on the ground in a short time. This year alone, we plan to AI over 800 commercial cows with only two or three bulls’ semen. I can only imagine the uniformity thanks to genetic advancement. “Around 1996, we began to purchase semen from the United States to improve the genetics of our cattle, and the Brangus race in our country. We used that semen on our embryo transfer cows that were raised with Paraguayan genetics. We reinforced our herd and soon imported semen from Canada and Argentina,” he says. Pukavy hopes they’re a pioneer not only in Paraguay, but within the Brangus breed. “We are our own competition,” Gimenez believes.

It’s easy to agree; the global Brangus breed advances thanks to the exchange of international frozen genetics. Breed Improvement Committee

The Breed Improvement Committee is charged to consider, pursue and participate in the implementation of all issues relating to the development of Brangus or Red Brangus cattle, including but not limited to; performance data, breed traits and characteristics, and consideration of all research projects and information available. The Long Term Plan proposes ideas such as the Brangus Value Project, moving from an intra-muscular fat EPD to a marbling score EPD, and developing indices based on economic values.

Show Committee

The Show Committee is to select judges for the national shows, to create a list of potential judges for use by other shows, to develop and monitor implementation of show rules and guidelines, to recommend locations for shows, to appoint and charge the ethics committee when needed at times of disputes or formal complaints arise, and to assist in the production of the Brangus Futurity and other national shows as needed.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee is to assist the IBBA Executive Vice President in developing an association budget in response to committee recommendations of the Board of Directors and consideration of the general association expenses and revenues. The committee is to develop programs and ideas to produce revenues, and to monitor the financial health of the association, and make appropriate recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding financial concerns. In addition, the committee will play a lead role in expanding the International Brangus Breeders Foundation (IBBF) to generate funds to support essential biological and marketing research.

International Committee

The International Committee’s responsibility is to expand global markets for U.S. Brangus genetics, both live and frozen. The committee represents IBBA in the Federation of International Brangus Associations (FIBRA), is a key liaison with the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export Inc. (USLGE), and coordinates foreign trade missions in addition to hosting international visitors.

The Member Services and Education Committee’s responsibilities are to enhance membership programs, encourage growth in membership enrollment, and develop and retain association members; in addition to creating educational opportunities on the local, regional, and national levels for all members. The Long Term Plan suggests that a non-voting junior member be added to each IBBA standing committee and this committee would be responsible for encouraging juniors to participate. It is encouraged they create and offer leadership training programs for members that are interested in committee leadership or Board of Director roles.

Promotion Committee

The Promotion Committee is charged with developing and implementing promotional strategies and plans, including but not limited to formal advertising campaigns which promote Brangus or Red Brangus cattle and the IBBA. The Promotion Committee takes on the role of promoting Brangus to cattle breeders, feeders, and packers through advertising and other means, including the increasingly important tool of social media.

The committee is responsible for conceiving and testing promotional messaging, including conduct of marketing and messaging research.

Commercial Marketing Committee

The Commercial Marketing Committee is to consider, pursue, and implement all issues relating to promoting Brangus or Red Brangus cattle to the commercial market, and to develop commercial marketing programs, ideas, and strategies, and tools to better enable members to market Brangus or Red Brangus cattle into the commercial industry. The committee will work to expand and improve initiatives such as the Brangus Built program and will develop working relationships with feeding and packing companies. This committee will work collaboratively with the Breed Improvement Committee in executing the Brangus Value Project that involves compiling feedlot and carcass data on 10,000 Brangus sireidentified cattle over the next decade.

IBBA COMMITTEE MEMBER APPLICATION The International BrangusÂŽ Breeders Association (IBBA) will meet and approve committee chairs of the following committees: Breed Improvement, Commercial Marketing, Finance, International, Member Service and Education, Promotion, and Show. Additionally, IBBA members are encouraged to volunteer to serve on IBBA committees. The IBBA Board of Directors makes official committee appointments upon committee member application submission.

IBBA committees meet multiple times throughout the year. Meetings are conducted in person and via conference call. TEXAS BRANGUS BREEDERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING AND SALE

Join us at Tenroc Ranch in Salado, Texas, for the annual Texas Brangus Breeders Association (TBBA) meeting and sale. The TBBA board of directors meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, followed by the general membership meeting. A steak dinner and open bar will be served at 7:00 p.m. that evening.

The annual TBBA Spring Sale will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2020, consisting of 65 head of select Brangus and Ultra cattle from among some of the most respected herds in the breed.

Newly elected directors beginning a three-year term include: Joe Fuller, Willow City, Texas; Myron Saathoff, Hondo, Texas; Robert Vineyard, Wharton, Texas; and Ross Wilson, Whitewater, Texas. Grady Green, El Dorado, Arkansas, was re-elected for another term.

Retiring directors include: Kelly Grissom, Breckenridge, Texas; Doug Muenchow, Floresville, Texas; and Steve Densmore, Bryan, Texas.

PHYLLIS PINCH A true Brangus family member

Phyllis Pinch was a lady who always spoke her mind even when she knew you didn’t like her thought or agree with her.

She felt strongly about family and helping other families, especially the juniors. Her and her late husband, Pat, would haul juniors around to shows when their parents couldn’t or had no trailer to haul them.

She raised her family in the Brangus breed and helped promote it for years. As everyone has said, her best years of her life were her last five when she spent much of the time with her grandkids. She always looked forward to someday being with her grandkids and watching them show Brangus.

There is one incident that comes to mind about

her and it showed me how she always was thinking about the young breeders. I will never forget one year, many years ago, when she grabbed me by the arm at a show in Shreveport, and said, “Come here, I want to show you something.” I hardly knew her when this happened, so I didn’t know where she was taking me. She was concerned about the juniors and wanted the junior board and other members to make sure it was safe for the juniors at shows. She and her family always looked out for the juniors and helped many of them over the years.

Phyllis was first a wonderful mom to her family, but also, a mom to juniors who needed help. She will be missed and hopefully as members when we are at shows or Brangus events, we will have the same attitude as Phyllis…keeping the juniors safety and future always on our minds.

Brangus breed mourns the loss of CLAYTON WILLIAMS

Clayton Wheat Williams, Jr. died on February 14, 2020, surrounded by his family. He was born October 8, 1931 in the small west Texas town of Alpine to Clayton and Chicora (Graham) Williams.

The son and grandson of legendary pioneering west Texans, he grew up in nearby Fort Stockton and graduated from Texas A&M in 1954 with a degree in animal husbandry. He then served two years in the U.S. Army before being honorably discharged. While in the Army, he waited tables at the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells and learned first-hand that people like to be treated with respect and consideration.

Williams took the $5,000 he saved from waiting tables and discharge pay and, from scratch, started selling life insurance back in Fort Stockton. Soon after, he entered the oil and gas business as an independent oil lease broker in 1957. From his Coyanosa Oil & Gas discovery, he founded Clajon Gas in 1959, which went on to be the largest individuallyowned gas company in Texas when he sold it in 1988. He loved building pipeline and eventually built 74

pipeline throughout Texas. A former employee said of Williams, that he outworked everyone around him.

Future employees for decades would also find that to be true. His legion of former and current employees loved him not only as a boss but as a friend, and admired his work ethic. He felt the same way about his employees. He often said that he “ran his business like Christopher Columbus; when he left, he didn’t know where he was going; when he got there, he didn’t know where he was; and when he got back, he didn’t know where he’d been. And like Christopher Columbus, he did it all on borrowed money!”

In 1984, Williams founded the first all-digital long distance company in Texas, ClayDesta Communications. Because an actor was too expensive, he starred in his own commercials that were filmed on his Alpine Ranch. He would go on to be an industry leader in oil and gas exploration, production and transportation, Brangus cattle, oilfield services, telecommunications, and diversify into banking and real estate. Along the way, he founded more than two dozen companies. Clayton Williams Energy owned 3,000 wells scattered over Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Utah and was a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange until he sold it in 2017. His outspoken

leadership during Texas’ economic ups and downs earned him respect as a survivor and a man with tremendous tenacity and foresight.

Williams and wife, Modesta, purchased their first Brangus bulls in 1973 for use on commercial cows which would lead them to developing one of the premier herds of Brangus. The ranch’s genetics can be found in herds across the country and their sales would become some of the highest averaging in the breed. In addition to the registered Brangus outfit that continues today, the Williams’ also have maintained large commercial herds, a registered Quarter Horse program, and commercial alfalfa hay operation. In 2016, Clayton and Modesta received the International Brangus Breeder Association Pioneer Award for their growing the breed, developing new bloodlines and Clayton’s openness to visiting with new breeders about cattle and the business end of ranching.

Always a Texas Aggie, he continued to support his alma mater, Aggie football and contribute to many scholarship projects. One of his great joys was teaching a course in the business school at A&M from 1983-89. In 1989, the Clayton W. Williams, Jr. Alumni Center was named in his honor.

An Eagle Scout and an All-American Wildcatter, he has received many awards for his leadership in oil and gas, agriculture, and real estate development. He was honored with the A&M Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981, inducted into the Petroleum Museum Hall of Fame in 2005, and earned many Lifetime Achievement Awards and was honored to give the Aggie Muster address at A&M in 2005.

When he wasn’t working, he and Modesta traveled and hunted all over the world. They loved seeing new countries and the adventures their many travels took them on. He earned the Grand Slam and Super Slam of sheep hunting and loved retelling the stories that went along with each trip.

In 1990, Clayton was the Republican Party’s nominee for Governor of Texas and continued to support Republican, conservative efforts.

He was modest about his faith in God but gently shared the gospel of Jesus with others. He always had his favorite scriptures to quote with sick friends and loved ones to be sure they knew Jesus. On various tables in his offices, he had the “Plan to Salvation” pamphlets for anyone to read or take home. He was a member of Community Bible Study for many years.

He was an American patriot, loved God, his country, and loved supporting the military, veterans, and local and state law enforcement. He and Modesta established The 200 Club in the 1970’s to provide support for local disabled and wounded officers or for their families if the officers are killed. He felt privileged to also be a part of thanking America’s

wounded veterans at the annual Show of Support/ Hunt for Heroes event and hosted hunts for veterans every year.

He was most proud of his 55-year marriage to his wife Modesta, and the couple’s five children, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They took delight in their family and took every opportunity to be at activities they were involved in. Family gatherings at their Alpine ranch were memorable times that forever linked the generations.

William is survived by his wife Modesta and their five children, Kelvie Cleverdon and husband Tim of Midland; Allyson Groner and husband Jerry of Midland; Clayton Wade Williams and wife Kristy of Midland; Jeff Williams and wife Erin of Alpine; and Chim Welborn and husband Greg of Midland. He is also survived by grandchildren Joshua and Jered Groner, Michael Clayton Muhlbauer, Anna Baum, Aubry and Chance Williams, Hyson and Modesta Welborn, Alex Williams, and five great-grandchildren Ava Muhlbauer, Brooks Groner, Cooper, Caleb, and Logan Baum. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and loved ones.

His funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church, Midland, Texas with a private family burial.

In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in his memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Midland, The Association of Former Students in the name of Clayton W. Williams, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund, 505 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas, 77840, Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and Midland Memorial Hospital.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned while showing cattle?

There’s more to showing than just winning. Yes, it is always fun to be in the winner’s circle, but you should never sacrifice everything just to win.

What advice do you have for younger members?

Enjoy the time you have showing because it goes by way too fast!

IBBA Welcomes Its Youngest Member

We would like to welcome the youngest member of the IBBA, Stryker Bennett Barry, born December 18, 2018. His father, Don Barry, grew up in the IJBBA, worked around the Brangus breed for several years, and exhibited Brangus cattle at the highest level. Recently, when Stryker celebrated his first birthday, a long time Brangus breeder and close friend to Don and Michele Barry paid Stryker’s dues to become a member of the IBBA.
