Welcome to the Bay Area Prior to this year’s Community Radio Conference, I was asked to make a presentation regarding the future of public broadcasting and community radio. Moreover, I was asked to articulate how my vision would be funded. The same question could and should be asked of you … What’s Your Vision of Community Radio (locally and nationally) and how will you make it sustainable?

Amidst the chaos brought on by efforts to defund public broadcasting at national, state, and local levels, now more than ever, community radio leaders are considering the business and value proposition of their station and service. It is my belief that two concepts best serve our industry moving forward:

Interdependence Utility At last year’s conference we referenced Community Engagement and introduced many of you to the leading organization framing this approach to public service media – The National Center for Media Engagement (NCME). This year, we dive deeper, providing intensives and conference programming encouraging you to embody engagement as a core value of your station. Interdependence is the end game when you deliver on the promise of local strategic partnerships with influential individuals, local communities, likeminded civic organizations, community-focused foundations, and passionate donors.

be a gray area in between the two? Regardless, in our current funding and policy climate an almost certain judgment day nears when you will need to defend the Utility of your service.

Make no mistake--the grounds have shifted beneath our feet. We have temporarily dodged the defunding bullet, but if your station is a just a bit player in your community, you are likely to be hit and possibly fatally wounded by future defunding efforts. Our role at the National Federation of Community Broadcasting is to help find resources and to lobby on your behalf to ensure that if resources exist, those of you providing essential service to your communities are first in line. It is also our role to encourage you to fortify the value of your public service through ever-evolving programming, development, community engagement, compliance, and governance.

Throughout this conference I will be meeting with station leaders to discuss the future of our industry, this organization, and their stations. I look forward to these meetings. Welcome to NFCB’s Community Radio Conference 2011. Enjoy the Bay, the community of broadcasters, and the bounty of resources present at this year’s gathering.

On Thursday and Friday mornings we’ll post a sheet for you to write a brief description of a session you want to offer. We’ll ask everyone to vote, and the top two vote-getters will be announced at lunch and assigned rooms. That’s two on Thursday and two on Friday.

Vegans, Vegetarians, and Omnivores We ordered a number of vegan and vegetarian meals based on which box you checked on your Conference registration form, so regardless of how much better somebody else’s meal looks, please eat what you requested.

The Bader Award The BADER Award is given for a single stunning innovation or a lifetime of vital contributions to Community Radio. This award honors individuals or groups whose work has advanced the vision and values of Community Radio, whether in programming, management, infrastructure development, technology, or development of the field. By creating and presenting the BADER Award, NFCB recognizes extraordinary people and institutions who have moved our unique and wonderful enterprise forward.

Why Michael Bader?

Michael Bader was an attorney who worked with Lorenzo Milam and Jeremy Landsman, two of the early pioneers of Community Radio. Lorenzo dedicated The Radio Papers, his essays on community broadcasting, to two lawyers: Al Kramer, “who told me to raise hell in radio,” and Michael Bader, “who showed me how.” That’s how Mike would like to be remembered, as the man who showed clients how.

Mike was a shrewd, hard working, tirelessly detailed attorney, who lived a larger life through his clients. He wasn’t by nature a hell raiser. He couldn’t be and be the kind of lawyer he was; but he loved clients who were.

If clients didn’t want to make the world spin a little faster on its axis, he treated them with professional respect. If they wanted to move the world, they had his complete devotion.

He loved NFCB and community stations because he knew that while they sometimes struggled to survive, they would not be satisfied with survival. They wanted to make something happen. Mike helped many of the pioneering community stations get on the air and he protected them like a terrier from all threats. He didn’t have to agree with them. In fact, he preferred clients who were quite different from himself. But if a station had something to accomplish, Mike was eager to show it how.

Mike not only defended community stations, he also supported them with time, attention and money. He drew no distinction between

the needs of large or small clients for his services. If you retained Mike Bader, he was your man for the duration, and often well after that.

Mike was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Haley Bader & Potts, which later affiliated with Garvey Schubert Barer. He died in November 2001 at the age of 72.

NFCB is pleased to honor Michael Bader by naming this award after him. We have no doubt that the recipient of the BADER Award is someone Mike would be proud to be associated with, and someone whose work he would give his whole heart to.

We learned during the recent public broadcasting funding crisis that quick action by stations is crucial— whether that’s stations contacting their elected representatives or stations encouraging their listeners to do so. This is more important and has more impact than advocates plying the halls of Congress. NFCB’s strategy for policy advocacy includes being able to quickly get stations—and their listeners—involved in grassroots activity. This workshop will outline some grassroots organizing strategies and tactics that stations can implement and institutionalize so you can react quickly, regardless of the issue.

A content management system, or CMS, is a web application designed to make it easy for non-technical users to add, edit and manage a website. A CMS also take care of a lot of back end work, like automatically generating navigation elements, making content searchable, keeping track of users, keeping track of music for reporting, and more. Our panelists will discuss what you need to consider when choosing a CMS for your station and the pro’s and con’s of various opensource and proprietary CMSs.

There is a serious Dropout Crisis in the United States— three out of every ten students in America’s public schools fail to finish high school. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has launched a major effort to address the problem, and all community and public stations are encouraged to participate by partnering and engaging with young people and community organizations that are focused on solutions. The six NFCB Pilot Stations (WVAS, KPFT, KNAI, KWSO, KUNM, and KSJD) will be present at this session and all stations are invited to attend and learn what you can do.

D Building a Case for Support

The cornerstone of a successful fundraising campaign is the case for support. Without a solid case for support, a campaign loses its most important tool; however, many stations have never been through the process of developing a case for support. Over the past four years, through participation in CPB’s Station Renewal and Leadership for Philanthropy projects, KDHX has developed a case for support for a $3.75 M capital campaign to build the Larry J. Weir Center for Independent Media. This workshop will offer guidance, tips and lessons learned from their experience.

As an element of the presentation, a copy of CPB’s certification guidelines will be provided to help stations ensure compliance. Among the requirements to be discussed are Community Advisory Boards, open meetings, open financial records, equal employment opportunity, and donor list requirements. Attendees will become familiar with the Public Broadcasting Act’s certification requirements for station grant recipients.

community and public radio institutions, and his indispensible early support for Native Public Media, the Latino Public Radio Consortium, the African American Public Radio Stations service project, New Service for a New Generation, and other initiatives designed to strengthen community radio while deepening and broadening its impact. His remarks are particularly welcome in the context of the current federal funding crisis and he will provide an overview on CPB priorities and the federal funding situation.

WRTU and KUSF are two college/student stations that recently were sold/taken over by a larger public radio station—with the help of Public Radio Capital. KPFT, WFMU and WHUS have all been involved in efforts to either save themselves or help other stations. The bottom line for many colleges and universities is the bottom line, and lovers of these stations should prepare themselves for what might be the inevitable chopping block. It may be for a private foundation, the marketing department of a major corporation, or a local community foundation. What successful grants have in common is giving the funders what they ask for. To do that, we’ll walk through how to figure out what you’re asking for and how to best communicate it, how to research a funder, when to communicate with a potential donor, how to put together the proposal, how to report your results, and funder pet peeves.

In the rapidly-changing area of interactive web sites and the mass-sharing of information, stations are challenged to keep up with the evolving rules that govern the use and publication of user-generated content, social media, blogs, podcasts, video and audio clips, e-commerce, and other common web site tools. This session covers issues on online privacy, defamation, copyright, trademark, data security, children’s online privacy, and designation of copyright agents, along with FCC and FTC regulations. Keynote Speakers: For more than 20 years, Richard C. Harwood has been dedicated to transforming our public and political lives by supporting individuals, organizations and communities in their quest to create change.

This passion for meaningful change and making hope real has led to the development of a practical, focused approach towards doing this work that has been proven effective.

His belief in the innate potential of people to come together to make a difference in the world led him to found The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. Since its founding the Institute has partnered with some of the largest nonprofits in the world, as well as foundations and businesses to help people create meaningful change.

He is the author of Make Hope Real (2008) as well as Hope Unraveled (2005), and numerous articles, essays and op-eds. Rich is a teacher and speaker, inspiring hundreds of audiences, and making a strong case for his philosophy of turning outward, being relevant, choosing intentionally, and staying true to themselves and their urge to create change.

Farai Chideya has combined media, technology, and diversity during her 20-year career as an award-winning author and journalist. Chideya is currently producing multimedia political specials via broadcast radio, web-video and social media with partners including WNYC and American Public Media. The team behind Pop and Politics with Farai Chideya is road-tripping through America to interview people about economic anxiety and national identity crises concerning religion, immigration, and race. This project is a new twist on a continuing passion to combine online and traditional media. Chideya is currently a “Leader in Residence” at the Colin Powell School for Policy Studies, where she is focusing on media training the next generation of public policy leaders. She speaks frequently to business, college, civic, and youth audiences, and also provides media training services to other journalists and business and civic leaders. She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from Harvard University Magna Cum Laude in 1990. She is the author of three nonfiction books: Trust: Reaching the 100 Million Missing Voters; The Color of Our Future; and Don’t Believe the Hype: Fighting Cultural Misinformation About African Americans.

Bruce Theriault joined CPB as Senior Vice President, Radio in February 2007 from Bolder Strategies, a Boulder, Colorado-based consulting firm for nonprofit organizations he founded and headed.

Theriault’s recent experience in public broadcasting also includes stints as a co-Managing Director of Public Radio Capital, which he helped launch as a separate operating organization, and at the Station Resource Group, where he directed the planning stage of a major strategic services initiative for public radio.

Theriault spent 13 years as Senior Vice President of Public Radio International, where he directed activities in business and contract negotiations, strategic planning, communications, affiliate relations, broadcast services, satellite radio, and new business development and played a central role in content and network development for public broadcasting’s online application service provider, Public Interactive.

Diana Campoamor is President of Hispanics in Philanthropy, a network of philanthropists that includes most of the international foundations and many corporations in the United States. Under her leadership, HIP has invested over $30 million in small Latino nonprofits and leaders. Using an innovative collaborative approach, HIP has supported grassroots organization with a potential to grow to scale.

In partnership with local funders and donors, HIP works in 15 different sites in the US and Latin America.

Prior to joining HIP, Ms. Campoamor worked at the Shalan Foundation, the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF) and United Way. Her book of essays, Nuevos Senderos: Hispanics and Philanthropy, published by Arte Publico Press in 1999, was one of the first anthologies to portray Latinos as givers and leaders in philanthropy.

Her editorials focusing on policy issues have been published by the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and others. She now blogs on subjects as diverse as philanthropy, the aging of the population, and LGBT communities.

Kay Sprinkel Grace, CFRE, is a San Francisco-based organizational consultant, providing workshops and consultation to local, regional, national and international organizations in strategic development planning, case and board development, staff development, and other issues related to leadership of the fund raising process. From March 2004 to June 2007 she was principal external consultant to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Major Giving Initiative.

She is the author of six books, all available through “Books” on her web site, www.kaygrace.org: Beyond Fund Raising: New Strategies for Nonprofit Innovation and Investment; High Impact Philanthropy: How Donors, Boards, and Nonprofit Organizations Can Transform Communities, co-author, with the late Alan Wendroff; Over Goal!

Rosso and Associates (Jossey Bass, 1987 and 2003), Taking Fund Raising Seriously, Taking Trusteeship Seriously and, to be released in May 2010, Nonprofit Management 101, edited by Darian Heyman.

Darrly Lester founded HindSight Consulting in 2001. Darryl has transformed his ideas of inspiring New Philanthropy to Build equitable communities into a company that provides tools and strategies to assist organizations to build communities by design instead of by accident or out of crisis. For over thirteen years, Darryl has been assisting organizations and individuals to be more effective in dealing with issues of race and equity, intentional in developing strategic plans and insightful in creating assessment models to monitor progress, impact and change. Darryl’s core work has been organizing and assist individuals and organizations to develop strategic ways to invest their Time, Talent, and Treasure in order to build and sustain healthy communities.

Darryl’s professional experience includes Director of Community Leadership and Program Director at the Triangle Community Foundation; Program Director for 4-H Youth Development at North Carolina State University; Program Director at North Carolina Public Allies; Assistant Dean at UNC-Chapel Hill in the College of Arts & Sciences; Assistant Coordinator of African American Student Affairs at NC State University and counselor at Shaw University.

Other highlights of Theriault’s career include managing KTOO-FM and KRBD-FM in Alaska, where he co-founded and served five terms as President of Alaska Public Radio Network, and helped establish and then served three years as Chairperson of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB).

Presenters: KPFT Program Director Ernesto Aguilar has served the station in this capacity for over six years. As program director, Aguilar’s outreach and engagement projects have included youth radio training; social media and mobile applications; and a variety of national and regional broadcasts. He holds a B.A. in journalism from the University of Houston, with minors in sociology and women’s studies.

Ann Alquist is the director of radio engagement of the National Center for Media Engagement. Before joining NCME in 2010, Alquist was the community engagement coordinator for the Twin Cities Media Alliance, the non for profit parent of the participatory journalism website www.tcdailyplanet.net. She also was the News Director at KFAI Radio in Minneapolis 2001-2006, producing a live newscast with trained community volunteers. Alquist also managed KFAI’s Youth News Initiative: Girls of Color Voicing Their Choice to create learning and professional opportunities for adolescent girls of color in public radio..

Jim Anderson is a partner in GoalBusters, providing philanthropic leadership services, specializing in outsourced development for small nonprofits; integrated fundraising, marketing and strategic planning; and customized education and training program. He has more than 25 years of sales and sales training experience through his positions with local media and national research companies such as Nielsen Media, Simmons and Scarborough Research. He migrated into the nonprofit arena in 2005, and specializes in analyzing donor motivations, implementing marketing and social media campaigns, finding compelling stories for organizational case statements, improving nonprofit communications, and making any special event more effective and fun. In 2010, Jim was selected at the AFP Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year.

Based in Anchorage, Alaska, producer Shyanne Beatty is most known for her production of the nationally syndicated music program Earthsongs distributed by Native Voice One. While holding down a regular afternoon drive show at Anchorage radio station 90.3 KNBA, Shyanne also participates as a floor reporter for KNBA’s annual statewide broadcast of the Alaska Federation of Natives convention. She has also produced documentaries such as Coming Home: Return of the Aluttiq Masks, and a United States Artists sponsored artist residency special with International Chinese musician Wu Man. Shyanne is Hän Gwich’in Athabascan and was raised in a subsistence lifestyle in Eagle, Alaska where the Yukon River meets the Alaska/Canadian border. Growing up in this remote community, radio provided her with a connection to the outside world.

Deb Benedict is the director of WTIP Community Radio in Grand Marais, MN on the shores of Lake Superior. The station went on air in 1998: Deb has managed WTIP for 10 years, integrating the tools of Harwood’s Community Engagement Initiative into the practices of WTIP. She serves on committees of AMPERS (The Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations) and received the AMPERS 2009 Broadcaster of the Year award. Deb currently sits on the board of NFCB. Michael D. Berg’s B.A. is in Journalism and Advertising from Syracuse University’s Newhouse Communications School. His law degree is from Georgetown University.

After a year of public service lawyering for community groups, Michael became an FCC staff radio lawyer in 1976. He’s been practicing radio, TV and other communications law full-time ever since.

In 2004 he opened his own practice in Washington, the Law Office of Michael D. Berg. He serves noncommercial radio and others by combining FCC and big law firm experience with small firm flexibility.

He handles FCC compliance, applications and policy, Congressional legislative and court matters, regulatory compliance questions on day-to-day NCE station operation, and many other matters. He is an avid community radio fan and supporter.

Peggy Berryhill (Muscogee) is the founder of the Native Media Resource Center. (NMRC). Founded in 1996 the NMRC produces content about Native Americans and promotes racial understanding and cross-cultural harmony. Peggy is known for her vision as a Media Architect designing media and technology opportunities and solutions collaborating with numerous public broadcasting and community organizations. Peggy has been instrumental in organizing Native radio stations and independent producers throughout her career. Peggy is a former NFCB Board member and NFCB Staff member. Peggy’s current project is the building of KGUA 88.1 FM, a community radio station in mid-Northern California.

Ginny Z Berson is NFCB’s Vice President and Director of Federation Services. This is the 12th Community Radio Conference she has produced. She been a program director, program producer, record company founder, concert producer, print columnist, op ed writer, asparagus picker, and community organizer. She was a founding board member of the Latino Public Radio Consortium and currently serves on the board of the Native Media Resource Center.

Anthony Bonet is a programmer at KALX Berkeley where he has been programming since 1992. Anthony has built his reputation as a particularly eclectic programmer at a particularly eclectic station.

He rang in the new millennium on January 1, 2001 by programming for 24 hours straight. He has served as Music Director and Public Affairs Director at KALX. Professionally, he has worked as a talent buyer at the Bottom of the Hill nightclub in San Francisco, for 9 years, and, for three years, he worked as an A&R representative for EMI Records. At the same time, Anthony has been involved in political activism, successfully organizing musicians and dancers in resisting mass-evictions from rehearsal facilities in 2001.

Duane Bradley has been General Manager at KPFT in Houston since February 2002. He oversees a paid staff of 12 and a volunteer staff of nearly 200. Responsible for the overall operation of the station, he collaborates with the 24 member Local Station Board on issues of policy, outreach, finance, budget and governance. He serves as an integral member of the Pacifica National Staff with colleagues from across the network. He has participated at KPFT in many capacities, paid and volunteer, on-air and off, since 1974. He has a BA in Oral Communications/Radio-Television-Film from Baylor University and still plays vinyl records.

Brian Brashier is Manager of KCNP in Ada, Oklahoma. Since the age of seventeen, Brian has worked on seven radio stations, and two television stations in virtually all capacities, including on-camera weather anchor and storm chaser. His first radio automation system required tweezers and pins to program. He did not mind saying goodbye to razor blades, wax pencils, and tape in the production room. Brian once told his parents he would someday like to build and manage a radio station. He’s now worried that many of his other wishes may come true also. Brian is married and has two daughters.

Dick Brook’s passion is working to promote effective journalism and media strategy for grassroots and community based organizations. He understands the importance of empowering citizen action and how cultivating communication skills can achieve results in today’s complex political and economic environment. Dick and his wife, attorney Heidi Pliam, live in Minneapolis where they raised 3 grown daughters. In their free time they seize any opportunity for

Tina Cartagena is Director of Development and Marketing at KUVO in Denver, and has been a part of the KUVO family for 21 years! During her tenure at KUVO, she has developed both the Membership and Underwriting Departments, coordinated all Live at the Oasis CD series, helped the station’s annual budget reach $1,000,000, and developed the station’s website (past and current). In 2006, KUVO produced Caliente: Latin Jazz with Eddie Palmieri; Tina coordinated the national marketing efforts for this successful series.

John Crigler loves dirt. In his (and perhaps only his) view, a daub behind the ear is finer than the finest French cologne. A lot is better than a little dirt, and on week-ends John can look like an English boxwood caught in a Peruvian mudslide. Martina Castro is the Managing Editor of KALW News 91.7fm in San Francisco. She started producing and training young people in public radio with NPR in Washington D.C. in 2004. She worked with NPR as a producer for four years before moving to San Francisco.

Martina’s independent work has been featured on NPR and KALW, and won a first place PRNDI award in 2010 for editing and producing a six-part series about solutions to violence in Oakland for KALW News. Martina has worked with KALW News in online community engagement and development, coordinating coverage of the recession, and now focuses on arts and culture coverage editing, while managing the staff and daily production needs of KALW’s Crosscurrents.

Marcie Crim (General Manager) WMMT-FM is the Community Radio station of Appalshop Inc., a non-profit multi-disciplinary arts and education center in the heart of Appalachia. Marcie was the creator of The Lexicon Project, a non-profit photography organization dedicated to building community and a former columnist for The Lexington Herald-Leader. Marcie has worked as a consultant for the Ford Foundation’s Southern Strategy Initiative and was named Kentucky’s Bluegrass Model Citizen of the Year in 2005. She has been with Appalshop/WMMT since October 2009.

Darlene Chapman-Holmes is Director of Customer Development at NPR and oversees the PRSS and NPRSatellite Services distribution teams. She is responsible for over 430 public radio stations managing the content depot, training, and customer support to stations and producers across the U.S. She also manages the commercial accounts for the NPRSS. Prior to coming to NPR, she worked in digital media, sales and marketing divisions for Vobile, an emerging software technology company. In addition to her professional career accomplishments, Chapman has shared her talents with several organizations including, The Executive Leadership Council (ELC), Emma Bowen Foundation, National Association of Minorities in Communications (NAMIC), Merge Youth Ministry, Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) to name a few. She sits on the Girls Inc.,and Women in Cable Telecommunications board for MidAtlantic Chapter.

Joanne Church has been affiliated with RRC since its inception in 1981. In 2005, she became President of the company. She also oversees the production process of RRC Diary and PPM Product Packages that Arbitron subscribers purchase. Joanne graduated from Trinity College, in Washington, DC with a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science. Before the RRC, Joanne worked for the Arbitron Company for ten years doing a variety of tasks including systems design, and Manager of Production and Radio Market Reports.

Carrie Core is the Interim Program Director at KPFA Community radio. She has been involved in media for the past 35 years as a producer, reporter and show host. She is the former Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator at WMNF in Tampa, Florida where she was instrumental in increasing volunteer registration over 400%.

Michael Couzens is a community radio advocate based in Oakland, CA. He is a lawyer practicing before the Federal Communications Commission, and is admitted to the bar in California and in Washington, D.C. He represents existing and wannabe community stations throughout the US, in planning and interface with the radio engineers, filing applications and amendments, and participation in FCC rule makings. What Michael likes about community radio is its localism, variety, and the mixing of public affairs programming and music. He is a bluegrass music aficionado, and can be found at-

Alfredo Cruz is President and CEO of KUVO, Denver. Previously, Cruz served as Station Manager at KRTU, San Antonio, was on-air host/operations manager at KKJZ (formerly KLON), Long Beach, and production manager/host at WBGO, Newark. Cruz was a studio engineer at UN Radio in New York City before joining NPR’s Peabody Award-winning Jazz Alive! production team in 1981. A Kiplinger and CPB Fellow, Alfredo is also a two-time recipient of the Guillermo Martinez-Marquez Award from the NAHJ. A pioneering Latino in public broadcasting, Cruz has also taught college courses on Latin Jazz and broadcast writing, is a contributor to the Smithsonian Institution and has written scholarly entries for the Encyclopedia of World Music and Hispanic American Biographies.

Tamara Dean has been on WDRT’s Board of Directors for five years and was President when the station received its FCC construction permit in 2009 and began broadcasting in 2010. She’s currently heading up WDRT’s local news production and fundraising efforts. She has a background in telecommunications, computers, and the arts, and was a volunteer programmer at WORT in Madison for five years. She makes her living as a writer.

Brandy Doyle is policy director at the Prometheus Radio Project, the leading advocate for low power FM (LPFM) radio. The Prometheus Radio Project builds participatory radio as a tool for social justice organizing and community expression. Brandy steers the organization’s policy agenda, advocating for LPFM and a more democratic media at the Federal Communications Commission and in Congress. Brandy has been involved in community radio since 2003, when she got her start as a local news reporter for WMNF Community Radio in Tampa, Florida. Brandy is a PhD candidate in anthropology at Cornell University, where her research is focused on the struggle to license community radio in Guatemala.

Doug Eichten is the President of DEI (The Development Exchange, Inc.), an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to serving public media organizations in the areas of fundraising and marketing. DEI’s member stations currently include 270 public media organizations: radio only, joint TV and Radio, music stations, news and information stations, stations of all sizes – serving all sizes of markets. DEI’s station support is focused on the disciplines of on-air giving, online giving, mid-level giving, leadership gifts, planned giving,

The Academic Minute is a two-minute and thirty-second daily module that brings cutting-edge academic research to radio audiences around the country. He teaches graduate level marketing courses at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and St. Catherine University.

and is the executive producer of 34 CD’s featuring live performances from New Orleans venues, as well as the annual WWOZ Jazz Fest Program. More recently, David has led WWOZ from the devastation caused by the Federal Flood of ’05. He has also initiated the digitization of WWOZ’s 35,000 CD/LP library and the transfer (in partnership with the Library of Congress) of more than 7,000 hours of WWOZ recordings of live music performances.

Arlene Engelhardt is the Executive Director of the Pacifica Foundation, the Pacifica radio network. She was involved with WMNF in Tampa, Florida for almost 20 years – as a programmer, volunteer, and board member. She served on the board at WMNF for 11 years, 3 of those as Board President during the time that WMNF was raising funds and building their new station. She has a background in both non-profit and for-profit management. She now works with the Pacifica National Board and the Local Station Boards in one of the most complicated not-for-profit board structures.

Ken Freedman is General Manager of WFMU. He has been an early an adopter of online technologies, and not the creepy kind either.

Holly Y Felmlee has over 30 years experience working for nonprofit agencies, mostly in Colorado’s rural San Luis Valley. She has been a Volunteer Coordinator for hospice, Chapter Manager for Red Cross, and Director for a regional science fair. She has written over 80 grants and has raised over one million dollars for SLV charities.

She and her husband recently returned from Peace Corps service in Romania where she worked with two organizations to improve services in a small city. Previously, she volunteered at KRZA public radio as the Children’s Hour host for ten years, and is now the General Manager.

Alice Ferris is a partner is GoalBusters, providing philanthropic leadership services, specializing in outsourced development for small nonprofits; integrated fundraising, marketing and strategic planning; and customized education and training programs. She has over twenty years of professional fundraising experience, and is a two-time honoree as AFP-Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year. Alice is a member of the AFP International Board, and was the 90th professional in the world to receive the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive credential. She specializes in strategic and development planning, board development, annual giving, and nonprofit operations.

Award-winning poet Molly Fisk joined KVMR to co-host BookTown in 1998. She took the Broadcast Training Class in 2000 and was in the Women’s Show rotation for eight years. In 2005 she was invited to contribute a weekly three-minute essay to the News Hour. 223 essays later, she’s produced two CDs (Blow-Drying a Chicken and Using Your Turn Signal Promotes World Peace), been on KQED’s The California Report, and in 2010 won a Corporation for Public Broadcasting grant from KVMR to market her essays to a wider audience. She matched those grant monies on Kickstarter, raising $5000 primarily from Facebook friends. Fisk is an on-line poetry teacher, has an MBA, and serves as KVMR’s Poet Laureate.

When June Fox found out that short, highly-myopic females were not welcome to be astronauts, she looked for a different career option. Having written “I will not talk in class” more times than she could count, she figured a job where talking is encouraged was a pretty good option. 30 years later, she still goes to the office every day to play with her friends in radio.

David Freedman has served as General Manager of WWOZ-FM, New Orleans since 1992. Under his management WWOZ has experienced phenomenal growth--$300,000 to $3.9 million per year operating budget, pioneering in webcasting (initiated in 1995) and the use of digital technology for the broadcast and streaming of live, remote music performances. In 1997 David received the Golden Reel award for his nationally distributed production, Mardi Gras Special,

Vanessa Graber is a bilingual communications specialist currently serving as Community Radio Director for the Prometheus Radio Project. She has more than 12 years experience working in commercial and non-commercial radio stations across the US. Vanessa served as a Roy H. Park Doctoral Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she conducted research on international communications development and served as an instructor of radio news production. Additionally, Vanessa has done media research in Costa Rica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Croatia. Her interests include political communication, audio documentary production, and low power FM radio.

Terry Green has served as General Manager of KUSP in Santa Cruz, California since 2003. Next year KUSP will celebrate its 40th anniversary as a community owned public radio station. Some of public radio’s most creative producers have been part of the KUSP community, including the Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva), David Gilmore and the Outright Radio team, and Jesse Thorn (maximumfun.org/The Sound of Young America). Before joining KUSP Terry’s radio adventures included stints at NFCB member stations KHSU in Arcata, California and KZFR in Chico, California. His first NFCB conference was in 1985.

Beverly Hacker is the co-Executive Director for KDHX Community Media in St. Louis. KDHX’s mission is building community through media, which it does through the operation KDHX FM 88.1 Community Radio; KDHX TV - cable access; KDHX Education - media literacy and production educational outreach and KDHX Media Arts - international timed filmmaking competitions. Beverly’s background is in business, accounting and technology. She joined the staff of KDHX ten years ago after having served as a volunteer and board member for five years. She recently completed graduate studies in media literacy. In addition to her role as ED of KDHX, she teaches media literacy and video production at Webster University.

Marc Hand is Co-managing Director of Public Media Company and Public Radio Capital. PMC was started this year and PRC in 2001. Marc started his radio life at KZSC and KUSP in Santa Cruz. He developed what is now KHDC – a bilingual community radio station in Salinas. And he was on the board of NFCB when there were still tube radios!

Cristina Hanson is the deputy director for the National Center for Media Engagement (NCME). She manages high level resource creation to lead public media in capacity building and engagement strategies. She is the chief consultant for NCME’s research and assessment projects and leads the content management for special initiatives and grant management. Cristina has been with the NCME for ten years and was the architect behind their Engagement Guide for Producers, NCME’s resource to connect producers with public media engagement. Prior to the NCME, Cristina was the Development Project Manager at Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and managed the on-air fundraising campaigns. Cristina still experiences numerous “drive-way moments.” Her current favorite radio show is a tie between The Moth Radio Hour and Snap Judgment.

Diane Hering moved to California from the Midwest more than 30 years ago, and has been involved with KZYX since it went on the air in 1989. She has been a volunteer, both on and off air, hosting a weekly program, helping organize events, and even serving a few terms on the Board of Directors. She became the station’s General Manager in 2001, a position she held for three years. During that time she obtained signal extension grants and led a successful capital campaign for matching funds. Diane returned to the KZYX staff in 2009, as Membership Director. In that capacity she works with staff and Board in the areas of fundraising and development.

In 2007 Florence Hernandez-Ramos retired from KUVO, a Latinocontrolled public radio jazz station in Denver that Flo helped found and for which she was CEO from 1983 to 2007. Because of her background in public radio and her knowledge of Latino contributions to the public media system. she was selected as Project Director of the Latino Public Radio Consortium. The LPRC advocates for the inclusion of Latinos in all aspects of public radio. In partnership with like-minded allies, the LPRC will change the face of the public broadcasting system to accurately reflect the cultural diversity of the nation.

Loretta M. Hobbs, as president of O’Neal-Hobbs Associates, consults with organizations to promote effectiveness and strengthen capacity. She is an organization and human effectiveness professional, with more than 20 years experience in organizational change, managing human dynamics in organizations, building effective work teams, strategic planning, board development, improving internal communication, group process facilitation, coaching and training.

She began working in public broadcasting in 1983, and she teaches organization development to graduate students.

Heidi Holtan is an on-air and web producer/host for KAXE—Northern Community Radio in northern Minnesota. Weekly she produces Realgoodwords an hour long literary program, KAXE’s Friday Morning Show and Saturday morning’s Between You and Me a call-in program that asks listeners to tell their stories on a different topic every week. She oversees KAXE’s social media presence and website.

In her down time, Heidi is also an awesome derby blocker on the Iron Range Maidens roller derby team.

Keith Hopper is Director of Product Strategy and Development for NPR Digital Services, helping guide the next generation of online offerings for hundreds of diverse public radio stations. Recent efforts include an API-driven online publishing platform to address a variety of stations’ web and mobile needs, targeting online audience-building and revenue-generation. This platform is currently running as a pilot in six station markets. Keith has worked in public media for five years and is behind several online community engagement efforts and mobile apps. The bulk of his career has been in web development and technology and strategy consulting.

Action Jackson was born and raised in the New Orleans Second Line and Mardi Gras Indian performance traditions. He was always an active participant in Second Line parades and Mardi Gras Indian events which eventually led to his becoming one of the preferred DJs for the Social Aid & Pleasure Club dances, balls and other functions. In March 2011 Action began working with WWOZ to start a weekly series with interviews about the parades, an in-depth webpage with all the parade route information, parade photo highlights, and promotion for the Social Aid & Pleasure Club and Mardi Gras Indian year-round series of social events. Action leads WWOZ’s efforts for community engagement with the New Orleans tradition bearer community at large.

Maxie C Jackson III serves as President & CEO for the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB). Before coming to

NFCB, Jackson served as Senior Director Program Development at New York Public Radio (WNYC) involved in strategic planning for national and local programming, outreach and audience development efforts, and new media and marketing initiatives. Before joining WNYC, Jackson served as WETA’s (Washington, DC) program director of radio. Before joining WETA in January 2005, Jackson served as acting general manager of WEAA (Baltimore, Maryland).

Jackson holds a master’s degree in multi-channel management from Michigan State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast management from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. His interests include the study of Classic African Civilizations, music, and college football. Jackson lives with his wife and two children in Maryland.

Shed Jackson is the communications and marketing director for Jazz 91.9 WCLK, a National Public Radio affiliate and Public Radio International station, licensed to Clark Atlanta University.

Shed oversees the branding, positioning, integrated marketing as well as community engagement initiatives for WCLK and, is responsible for the overall planning, organization and direction of the station’s communications strategies. Shed has worked in communications and marketing roles for more than 10 years, including positions with public relations firms, major publishing companies and education agencies.

Phil Johnson is the SoundExchange Reporting Project Manager for NPR Digital Services. Prior to joining NPR in 2009, Phil spent seven years at WGBH in Boston, as the Director of Technology for WGBH Online. He’s also worked as a software /web developer at a number of companies, including Target Software, where he helped to build and launch Team Approach. He’s studied economics at MIT and Harvard and written jokes for a number of late night television talk hosts, including David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon. He currently lives in Boston with his wife and two daughters.

Sally Kane is the General Manager of KVNF Community Radio, a rural service network based in Paonia, Colorado. She has worked in community radio for 10 years. KVNF has been broadcasting for 32 years covering 10,000 square miles in a remote, mountainous area of Colorado’s western slope. Ms. Kane also works with nonprofits as a facilitator and helps them on topics such as media messaging, board governance, and strategic planning.

Helen Kennedy has been hanging around community and public radio long enough to know the difference. She began at two stations in Santa Cruz, moved to Pacifica in Los Angeles, then finished her MBA at UCLA after watching one more small non-profit go under from lack of business skills. She left the land of the perpetual summer and high real estate prices and moved to Portland, Oregon to work at OPB, a joint licensee. Now she is a partner in the fundraising firm, Lewis Kennedy Associates, still living in Portland, walking long distance relays, listening to radio, knitting, and trying to figure out how that woman runs a marathon while knitting!

Kimberly Kenny works with individuals, corporate and nonprofit partners to fund vital programs for women, girls and their families and to raise awareness about issues that affect California’s most vulnerable communities. Kim has over 15 years experience in development, communications and grassroots organizing. She began her career as a political consultant with Tramutola Company, managing public education campaigns that raised over $500 million for California public schools. Prior to joining the Women’s Foundation, Kim worked with the Environmental Grantmakers Association and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Kim is a graduate of UC Berkeley and she enjoys cooking, yoga and writing.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Holly Kernan is the architect of the Public Interest Reporting Project at KALW, where she is news director and host. In 2004, Kernan created a newsroom from scratch, as she watched the commercial model for journalism suffer increasing cut backs, especially at the local level. In 2005, she created a program to train new journalists at Mills College in Oakland, with an eye on bringing more diverse voices to the airwaves. Kernan also teaches at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Before coming to KALW, Kernan spent a decade as a producer and reporter at KQED public radio.

Prior to that, she produced historical documentaries for Canal Sur TV in southern Spain. She was named “Journalist of the Year” by the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists in 2009.

Robert Kershaw is the Director of Canadian Projects and Coördinator of Witness Tree for the Center of Digital Storytelling. Robert has been facilitating digital storytelling and community media projects in Canada, the United States and Internationally since 2001. He has written and co-edited a number of books including: Exploring The Castle, Discovering the Backbone of the World; Sáhtu Atlas: Maps and Stories from the Sáhtu Settlement Area in Canada’s Northwest Territories; and If Only We Had Known: The History of Port Radium as Told by the Sahtúot’ine. He currently lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and two children.

Dorothy Kidd teaches Media Studies at the University of San Francisco with concentrations in global political economy, social movement communications, alternative media and communication rights. She worked in community media for over two decades, including Vancouver Cooperative Radio, Wawatay Native Communications in northern Ontario and the OKâlaKatiget Communications Society in Labrador Canada. Her PhD dissertation Talking the Walk: The Communications Commons Amidst the Media Enclosures documented the history of community radio in the Americas. Her current research project analyses the changing media landscape in San Francisco from the perspective of social justice movements.

Edward Kissam has been a senior associate in the area of evaluation research and planning for Aguirre Group since 1994. For more than three decades, he has been leading research projects with a focus on farm working migrant needs and immigrant civic participation. He has helped Radio Bilingüe evaluate the impact of its radio programming among its listeners, and has been a research consultant for KQED – San Francisco and KCET – Los Angeles. In 1985, he was a program manager for KRCB, a public television station in Sonoma County. He is a graduate of Princeton University, Oxford University and State University of New York.

Kim Klein is an internationally known fundraising trainer and has worked in all aspects of fundraising: as staff, as volunteer, as board member, and as consultant. She is best known for adapting traditional fundraising techniques, particularly major donor campaigns, to the needs of organizations with small budgets working for social justice. Kim is the author of five books including her most recent, Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times. Her classic text, Fundraising for Social Change, now in its fifth edition, is widely used in the field and in university degree programs. She also wrote Fundraising for the Long Haul, Ask and You Shall Receive, and Fundraising in Times of Crisis.

Alan Korn is an attorney based in Berkeley, California with a law practice emphasizing media, music, film, art, photography, entertainment and intellectual property issues. In addition to transactional work, his practice includes litigation and administrative proceedings before the FCC on behalf of microradio, Low Power FM and Non-Commercial Educational broadcasters. Alan has also lectured extensively on copyright law and many of his articles on legal is-

sues for musicians are published on the website www.alankorn.com.

He is also featured in the documentary film Sonic Outlaws by Craig Baldwin (1995) addressing fair use issues arising at the intersection of copyright law, free speech and artistic expression.

Nishat Kurwa is a senior producer for Turnstyle, Youth Radio’s online information service for 18-34 year old audiences, and has been a co-developer of Youth Radio’s digital and social enterprise strategies. She led the team that launched the company’s music hub, AllDayPlay.fm, bringing the San Francisco Bay Area’s most popular mix DJs to streaming radio and podcasting. Kurwa’s past reporting for Youth Radio’s International Desk included coverage of girls returning to school in Kabul after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, young South Indian villagers rebuilding after the Asian tsunami, and Cape Town youth entering college a decade after the end of apartheid.

Camille Lacapa was the former Network Services Manager for Native Public Media and currently serves as the Manager of the Native Desk at NFCB. Her radio career began in 1987 at WOJB 88.9 FM, licensed to the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe in northwestern Wisconsin. She has experience working in the Public Radio field as a volunteer, Membership Secretary, Station Manager, Program Director, and Radio Producer. She worked as an Associate Producer and host of Native America Calling and later became the Station & Audience Relations Manager for Native Voice One. Her experience includes working with MEMSYS, On-Air Fundraisers, and Direct Mail Campaigns. Ms. Lacapa served on the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Community College Board of Regents and the NFCB Board. She now resides in Phoenix, Arizona, with her son Tony and her partner Steve Sam. Adam W. Lacher has lived almost his entire life in Maine and has worked as the underwriting & publications manager for WERU Community Radio 89.9 Blue Hill & 99.9 Bangor since 2006. Responsible for all business and non-profit support (including on-air underwriting, print and web advertising, business membership and event sponsorship), all public relations and outreach (including editing and designing print publication Salt Air, www.weru.org, and all WERU print and web advertising), and helping organize station fundraisers.

Adam is interested in Maine’s creative economy, supporting local agriculture, preventing domestic violence, and protecting water, media, and healthcare rights.

Janis Lane-Ewart is Executive Director of KFAI, Fresh Air, Inc. She joined KFAI in 2001 and is responsible for general management, fundraising and development, and fiscal operations. Ms. Lane-Ewart also serves as one of KFAI’s volunteer programmers, hosting a jazz program, The Collective Eye. Ms. Lane-Ewart has an extensive background as an arts administrator working with community, regional and nationally based arts organizations. Ms. Lane-Ewart is active in community service, having served on the boards of Community Shares of Minnesota and COMPAS; regionally as current Treasurer of the Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations (AMPERS); and, nationally as current Treasurer of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.

Matthew Lasar teaches History and Politics at UC Santa Cruz. He is the author of Uneasy Listening: Pacifica Radio’s Civil War. He is operations director for the Radio Survivor blog and writes about media regulation for Ars Technica. He lives in San Francisco.

Yoonhyung Lee is director of Digital Media Fundraising for KQED. From creation and management of the organization’s main Facebook and Twitter accounts to directing email appeals, Yoon cultivates engagement with KQED’s audiences and facilitates donations through digital media. She has pioneered new fundraising

techniques for the station, including mobile text solicitations, microdonations, Groupon, and SwipeGood. A New Englander born and raised, Yoon dedicates a lot of spare time to following the Red Sox and Patriots, and lives with her husband and one-year old daughter in San Francisco.

Nico Leone is the Co-Executive Director at KDHX Community Media in Saint Louis. Over the past four years, Nico and his Co-Director have lead KDHX through significant changes in programming, marketing, development, and organizational practices as part of CPB’s Station Renewal Project. As a result of the success of that project, KDHX launched a capital campaign in 2010 as part of their participation in CPB’s Leadership for Philanthropy to build new studios, offices, and a 150-seat performance venue.

Rhonda LeValdo is the host of Native Spirit Radio at 90.1 KKFI-FM Kansas City. Rhonda started at KKFI in October of 2004 and is the only Native American Radio show in the Kansas City area that devotes time to both music and Native News. Rhonda also teaches at Haskell Indian Nations University in Media Communications overseeing both the Print and Broadcast program at Haskell. LeValdo is currently the President of the Native American Journalists Association as well.

Jesse Locks is the co-founder and co-producer of the award-winning program, See Jane Do. For over ten-years, she has worked in independent music and publishing, most notably for the trailblazing and critically acclaimed Arthur Magazine. She is the Festival Director for the Nevada City Film Festival and the PR Director for the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Jesse is a self-described culture change agent, interested in original ideas and how to cultivate and disseminate them through various forms of storytelling to promote activism and positive change. She is also deeply involved in the community serving as a UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener, a Board of Director for the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, a Friendship Club Angel and a board member for the Sierra College Coordinating Council.

Matt Martin is General Manager at 91.7 KALW-FM in San Francisco.

Matt began his career in public radio at KPFA-FM in Berkeley, where he was a reporter and producer, and also served as the station’s programming coordinator. He came to KALW in 2001 to produce Your Call, the station’s first daily political affairs call-in program. In that position, Matt worked with a number of distinguished hosts, including Laura Flanders, Farai Chideya, and Rebecca Roberts. In 2006, Matt became KALW’s General Manager and focused the station on developing dynamic local programming, such as the award-winning local newsmagazine Crosscurrents.

Sue Matters is Station Manager of KWSO which is owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon. She works the Morning Routine Monday thru Friday on the air, Produces PSAs and Programs as needed, works with and from staff in learning 21st Century technologies and all around really loves radio.

Kim McCarson became the Executive Director of KOOP Community Radio in 2006. At KOOP, she manages day to day operations and fundraising. Under Ms. McCarson’s management, KOOP has nearly tripled its weekly audience and increased donor income by 79%. She moved to Austin from Asheville, North Carolina where she most recently served as Director of Grants Administration for the Western North Carolina Regional Economic Development Commission and managed a $5 million grants program. Prior to joining the Economic Development Commission, Ms. McCarson coordinated proposals, winning over $400,000 in grants for the American Interna-

tional Health Alliance, while supervising over $3.5 million in contracts and purchases.

Charles Meyer is executive director of the National Center for Media Engagement (NCME). NCME is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to strengthen public media’s ability to engage local communities. Prior to his current position and four years as NCME deputy director, Meyer spent six years as managing director for Best Practices in Journalism, an initiative to help local public and commercial stations improve their journalistic coverage of politics, campaigns and elections. Among other resources, BPJ undertook a special initiative focused on editorial integrity.

Karen Michel is a long term (think 5 year old on Kids Say The Darndest Things radio producer, documentarian and educator. She’s won national and international recognition for her work, and continues to do freelance arts reporting for NPR’s news magazines, serve as college faculty, and is moving into newer directions with a performance documentary project/obsession: Live?Die?Kill?: 3 Questions in Various Geographies.

Doug Mitchell is project manager for NFCB’s African-American Public Radio Stations (AAPRS) initiative, co-director of a Ford Foundation funded program to develop minority journalists as media entrepreneurs and co-chair of the Media Institute for the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). He worked at NPR for 21.5 years, most of that time as a producer and director for each of NPR’s national newsmagazines. During his time at NPR he founded a hands-on, media training program targeting college students he dubbed “next generation radio.” Doug is a former Knight International Press Fellow, a grantee for the U.S. State Department Visiting Professor program as well as a 2007 William S. Fulbright scholar.

Mario A. Murillo is associate professor and Chair of the Radio, Television, Film Department at Hofstra University’s School of Communication, where he also serves as executive producer of Wake Up Call, a morning drive news and public affairs program heard daily on WRHU 88.7FM, the award-winning, community-licensed station of Hofstra University. In his over 25 years working in commercial, public, and community radio, he has served as director of Public Affairs Programming at WBAI 99.5FM, New York correspondent for NPR’s Latino USA, hosted programs on WNYC and has produced nationallysyndicated programming for Pacifica Radio. A Fulbright Scholar in Colombia in 2008-2009, he has collaborated on various community radio projects in Latin America.

John Murphy is a 40-year radio veteran and community media activist. A continuing focus for his work has been on station networking and increasing public access to technology. John serves as General Manager of WHUS Radio at the University of Connecticut/Storrs and he is part-time faculty in the Communications Department at Eastern Connecticut State University. John served for 25 years on the Board of Directors of IBS (Intercollegiate Broadcasting System) and he brings the mission and ethics of community radio to college and other educational radio stations. John has received a State of Connecticut General Assembly Official Citation Award for 30 years of public service in community radio and a Wavy Gravy Basic Human Needs Award for outstanding service to local communities.

Mary Louise Mussoline is Executive Director of 88Nine Radio Milwaukee. She leads a committed and talented staff dedicated to bringing a young and diverse audience to public radio through new music, Milwaukee music and dynamic short-form public affairs programming. Mary Louise has been an executive director, fundraiser and consultant to non-profits for 30 years. She is on the faculty of The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, providing training and consulting for non-profit leaders in many fields. She received the 2006 Scott Cutlip Professional Fundraiser Award, from the Association of Professional Fundraisers, Milwaukee Chapter.

Sheila B. Nanaeto, an enrolled member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, mother of two and a lifelong resident of Ignacio, CO. Sheila has been involved at KSUT in several capacities; an on air programmer hosting the Wednesday Native American Morning Show for 11 years. Sheila was hired in 2009 as an apprentice in Business Administration with funding provided by the Tribal Employment Rights Office’s (TERO) Professional Development Program. In October 2010, she was appointed full time by the KUTE Inc. Board as Station Manager for Tribal Radio 91.3 FM. LaFontaine E. Oliver is the General Manager of WEAA-FM licensed to Morgan State University in Baltimore MD. He brings a fresh perspective to public media. He’s worked in commercial radio for more than a decade for companies such as Radio One and XM Satellite Radio. His experience spans numerous radio formats including jazz, news-talk, gospel, urban ac and others. Working mainly on the programming side this second generation broadcaster has spent the last few years developing national programming aimed primarily at minority and underserved audiences. For his most recent project Oliver recruited Dr. Michael Eric Dyson to public broadcasting and helped to launch the national Michael Eric Dyson Show. As General Manager of WEAA, Oliver has to run professionally staffed, member and community supported radio station as a mission-driven business while also serving as a broadcast training facility that helps to further the mission of his educational institution.

Joseph Orozco, Station Manager KIDE-Hoopa, CA. The first Native American owned and operated radio station in CA and the first solar powered station in the State. We are the voice of the Hoopa Valley High School Warriors and Lady Warriors. Technologically we started old school and advanced a few grade levels over time. We broadcast Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball games, both home and away as budgets permit. Donations welcome.

nationwide. Serving as an activist for women, social justice, and the environment, Elisa’s work takes her around the world to discover and share the extraordinary stories and solutions in each of us. She is the co-founder and co-producer of the Passion into Action Women’s Conference, the See Jane Do Media Lounge and has organized and managed high profile conferences bringing elected officials together to discuss environmental solutions.

Travis Ploeger is the Licensing and Enforcement Specialist within the Legal Department at SoundExchange. In addition to providing assistance to current licensees with issues involving their compliance, he fields questions from prospective licensees about the various different options for rates and terms of statutory licensing. He also conducts data analysis involving licensee activity (financial and usage) for his department. When not at SoundExchange, Travis is the creator/director/accompanist for iMusical:The Improvised Musical, a fully improvised musical theater show produced by Washington Improv Theater. Travis was also the music director for Chicago City Limits, the longest-running improv comedy show in New York City, for almost a decade.

Jennifer Poenix has been Member Services at Northern Community Radio since 2006. Prior to that, she wrote ad copy for commercial radio. She likes community radio way more. Really, a lot more. Her favorite things about working at KAXE include the copious amounts of pancakes on most Friday mornings, the Mississippi River view, and the people. She lives near Grand Rapids, MN with her husband, four year old son, a dog, two cats, and seven chickens.

Burt Poley (Hopi/Laguna) serves as Network Manager for Native Voice One, the Native American Radio Service (NV1) based at the Koahnic Broadcast Corporation (KBC) satellite office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Burt is the primary liaison to station representatives, and works with them in a range of capacities to support distribution of NV1’s Native radio productions throughout the United States and Canada.

Jose Jesus “Chui” Ramirez, joined Radio Bilingüe KHDC-FM in Salinas as a volunteer when he was a high school student. He has been a radio producer, program host and teen radio program coordinator. He produces the programs Rockin Da House and Alza Tu Voz, which include talks on education, teen dating, gang violence, civic engagement and youth empowerment, and serve as training ground for young aspiring programmers. He is often invited to speak to local high school students. He currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Collaborative for Salinas Youth. The son of farm workers, Ramirez graduated with a BS in Telecommunications, Multimedia and Applied Computing from California State University, Monterey Bay.

Samuel Orozco is Director of National News and Information for Radio Bilingüe. He is founding Executive Producer for Noticiero Latino and Línea Abierta, and has been the architect and director of Radio Bilingüe’s news and information department since 1983, supervising all national programming. He conducted the first live bilingual radio coverage of the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions in 1984 and in 2008 traveled the U.S. providing live coverage of the presidential election season. He has developed a number of award-winning programs whose signature features are the active listener participation as content creators and partnerships with fellow media public organizations. He was the oral historian for the books To the Promised Land, and Organizing for Our Lives.

Raul Ramirez is KQED Public Radio’s Executive Director for News and Public Affairs. As News Director since 1991, he led the launching of KQED Radio’s statewide news service, The California Report, of the nationally distributed Asian-Pacific program, Pacific Time, and other locally produced programs. He was a reporter for The Miami Herald and The Washington Post and a reporter and editor for the Oakland Tribune and the San Francisco Examiner. Ramirez was a principal writer for the seminal UNITY national conference analysis of U.S. media coverage of ethnic and racial minorities, and frequently lectures on topics related to media diversity. He is a board member of the Latino Public Radio Consortium.

Elisa Parker is the co-founder, producer and host of the award winning program, See Jane Do. As a social change organization, See Jane Do redefines media for women and the power of story to create positive change. Elisa received a grant through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to produce and distribute See Jane Do

Libby Reinish, Program Coordinator, works to build public support for Free Press’ campaigns and initiatives, including the media ownership and public media campaigns. She organizes local hearings and events, conducts public outreach, and collaborates with local and grassroots allies on Free Press events. Before joining Free Press,

Libby was a co-founder of WXOJ-LP, Valley Free Radio, in Northampton, Mass. She also coordinated Prometheus Radio Project’s Full Power campaign and was a consultant to Radio Vieques. She writes about urban agriculture and simple living; her work has appeared in Urban Farm and Make Magazine.

Breeze Richardson is Director of Strategic Partnerships at Chicago Public Media, which she joined in September 2003 as an intern for Worldview, WBEZ’s weekday global affairs program. She later became a producer for Worldview and went on to produce StoryCorps-Chicago in 2005. Breeze is also the producer for WBEZ’s Louder Than a Bomb Series. Prior to joining Chicago Public Media, Breeze hosted Get up, Stand up at WHPK at the University of Chicago and was a regular columnist for The University Daily Kansan. She also cofounded The Kaw Valley Independent, a community newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas.

Silvia Rivera is Managing Director of Vocalo.org 89.5 FM, a service of Chicago Public Media, where she oversees all cross-platform programming strategies and community engagement initiatives. Under her leadership, Vocalo has been repositioned as a public media service that connects with younger, culturally diverse audiences.

Silvia is an authoritative voice on issues of leadership and diversity in public media. She is a founding member and Board President of the Latino Public Radio Consortium. She also serves on the board of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.

Elizabeth Robinson has been a community radio practitioner at KCSB since the early 1980’s and has been fortunate to have paid work there since 1990. 2012 will mark KCSB’s 50th year. She has been a member of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) since 1992 and has served on the international board since 1998, first as Vice President for North America, now as Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee since 2002. She completed that work in 2010 but continues to support the commitment to rights of communication and freedom of expression. She was delighted to see one of her Tunisian colleagues alive and smiling as her people asserted their demands for those rights in January. She urges her US colleagues to look outward as well as inward where those rights are concerned.

Steve Schaffer is a partner at the law firm of Schwartz, Woods & Miller in Washington, D.C., where he has practiced since 1978. His clients include both noncommercial radio and television licensees and a variety of people and companies who need to deal with the Federal Communications Commission. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he oddly majored in RadioTelevision and Film, after which he moved to Washington D.C. to get his law degree at the George Washington University. He lives in Washington with his wife Beth and their dog Layla, and when Layla lets him have spare time he tries to keep up with his comic book collection.

The Association of Independents Radio’s Executive Director Sue Schardt is a respected radio veteran and award-winning producer whose path has taken her through public, commercial, community, and international media. She founded SchardtMEDIA Strategies 1998 to focus on independent, ideas-driven projects and worked extensively with the networks and leading stations and producers across the country. She assumed leadership of the AIR, a growing, 795-member organization in September 2007. AIR marked its 21st anniversary with the completion of Makers Quest 2.0 (MQ2), a pilot project funded by CPB innovating new media “life forms” at the intersection of traditional broadcast and digital media platforms.

Jake Shapiro is founding CEO of Public Radio Exchange (PRX Inc.), an online marketplace connecting stations, producers and the public. Since its launch in 2003 PRX has been a leading innovator in public media, pioneering new digital distribution models and social media applications. In 2008 PRX received the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions and in 2010 PRX was selected as a winner of the Knight News Challenge. In 2010 Jake was elected to the Ashoka Fellowship, supporting his social entrepreneurship work in new media. Prior to PRX, Jake was Associate Director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, where he remains on the Fellows Advisory Board.

Bonnie Simmons arrived in San Francisco in 1967 to be a hippie— succeeded. Worked at KSAN in SF as DJ, Music, Director, Operations Director and then Program Director, for almost 10 years. Warner Brothers Record LP Promotion Director 1978-1983. Worked for legendary music producer Bill Graham; and at Live-105, KOFY-FM, KUSF, KVRE; was Audio Director for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, managed the band Cake for almost ten years, as well as Noe Venable and Etienne de Rocher for some years, and have been at KPFA for almost 20 years as a programmer of a music show on Thursday nights. Currently am the Executive Director of the Bill Graham Foundation and happily serve as the artist logistics person for the 3 day free music festival in Golden Gate Park, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which allows me to continue to be able to volunteer at KPFA. Elisabeth (Lissa) Soep is Research Director and Senior Producer at Youth Radio, a national youth-driven production company in Oakland, CA. With a PhD from Stanford, she researches and writes about youth discourse, learning, and digital media culture for academic journals, popular websites, and books including Drop that Knowledge (Soep & Chávez, UC Press) and Youthscapes (Maira & Soep, UPenn Press). The Youth Radio stories Lissa has produced for NPR have been recognized with honors including the Peabody Award, three Murrow Awards, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.

With NSF support, Lissa co-created the Brains and Beakers series—interactive dialogues between youth and inventors.

Zaidee Stavely is network news producer for Radio Bilingüe, the Latino Public Radio network. She worked as an environmental reporter for the network for three years, covering environmental health and justice issues in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Her investigative reporting on a series of birth defects in Kettleman City, CA, earned her CCNMA’s Ruben Salazar Award. Her stories have also been heard on KQED’s The California Report. Stavely has reported for Reforma Newspaper in Mexico City, freelanced from Mexico City for various print outlets, and worked as a translator. She has an M.A. in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Norman Stockwell serves as WORT’s Operations Coordinator. He has been at the station in music and news programming since 1983.

In addition to working as a journalist in the U.S., Cuba, Nicaragua & Mexico, Norm has been involved in the collective management of two Madison institutions: Lakeside Press and Mifflin Street Co-op.

He is also the former Director of the Old Town School of Folk Music - Madison, and in the 1970’s, served as Facilities Manager for Northwestern University’s Archeological Program. Norm has coordinated community radio coverage at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre in 2002, 2003, and 2005; the Polycentric Forum in Caracas, Venezuela in 2006; the WSF in Nairobi in 2007; and the US Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia.

Brian Terhorst is the General Manager of Northstate Public Radio (KCHO-FM, Chico / KFPR-FM, Redding) based at California State University, Chico. Brian ascended the volunteer ranks at KVMR-FM,

After stints as KVMR’s Membership, Events, and Volunteer Coordinators, he was named GM in 1996 and served in that post for ten years. In 2007, Brian made the move to Chico and debuted Harmony Ridge on the network in 2008. Brian served two terms on the NFCB Board of Directors and four years as its Chair.

George Thomas has been the General Manager of KTSU 90.9 FM on the campus of Texas Southern University in Houston Texas for 16 years. Thomas is a locally renowned jazz musician, former high school band director and tennis coach. KTSU has experienced unprecedented growth under his leadership. He’s also responsible for the construction of a new $4.5 million dollar 18,000 square foot state of the art digital radio station and recording studio which now is the new home of the station. The station has the distinction of having the largest African American Audience of any public radio station in the country with over 200,000 plus weekly listeners. KTSU also serves as a training ground for communication students at TSU and recently received its digital conversion grant from CPB and plans to use one of the new HD channels exclusively for student programming.

Robert M. Winteringham is CPB’s Deputy General Counsel. He joined CPB in 1997. Prior to CPB, Mr. Winteringham was senior associate at the communications law firm of McFadden, Evans & Sill.

He also worked as an intern at the advertising agency Young & Rubicam. Currently, he serves as a Vice President and the Chair of the Legal Committee for the North American Broadcasters Association.

Mr. Winteringham is a cum laude graduate of the Indiana University School of Law – Bloomington, where he served on the editorial board of the Federal Communications Law Journal. He received his undergraduate degree with high honors from the University of Michigan.

Melodie Virtue has been practicing communications law for over 25 years. She is an owner at the Washington, DC Office of the law firm of Garvey Schubert Barer. Her primary focus is on assisting broadcasters in their dealings with the FCC, providing day-to-day regulatory advice, working on transactions and applications for new stations, and advising them on web site compliance, copyright and streaming issues.

Keith Wilson is one of the Public Radio Satellite System’s Network Operations Center Specialist who assists producers and stations in distributing their program audio over ContentDepot. He fields calls
