Yaletown is Vancouver’s Dining District, with Discount Monday Night
Yaletown is Vancouver’s trendy and upscale renovated warehouse district, boasting a huge variety of restaurants, sports bars and late-night lounges. A number of restaurants will be offering special goodies & discounts just for AFP delegates who make reservations at www.yaletowninfo.com/conference/afp or see the restaurant reservations desk in the registration area by the evening of Monday, April 2. Yaletown’s converted heritage buildings are now home to a dense mixture of condominium and loft residences, some of the city’s top fashion and design shops, cutting-edge restaurants, cafés and bars, late-night entertainment and destination retail boutiques. Described as “Canada’s hippest neighborhood” and a “foodies delight,” Yaletown sets the table with more than eighty restaurants and cafés, with menus to suit every taste.
Yaletown is a healthy walk or a quick cab ride from the center of downtown Vancouver, and is situated along the new Canada Line subway (YaletownRoundhouse station). There’s also going to be a welcome area at Yaletown Park. The Yaletown Team will be wearing branded jackets and will welcome guests, tour them to their restaurant of choice and answer any questions that they may have. You just have to make your reservations first by going to www.yaletowninfo.com/conference/afp. There will be a series of welcome AFP signs throughout the dining district, as well as AFP door signage at every participating restaurant. This will assist diners to locate their restaurant and orient themselves to the district.
This dynamic neighborhood is home to Zagat five-star-rated restaurants, many of which have also received “Golden Plate” awards, annual “Best of” awards and have even competed in international chef and bartender events. The chefs of Yaletown are as inventive and unique as the fashionable boutiques and gift shops of the area.

DR2: The Joy of Storytelling Every expert says, ‘’Tell stories! That’s how you raise the big money in fundraising!’’ But how? What are the best ways to tell fundraising stories? Individual fundraising strategy, no matter how good, needs sticky stories. With real examples the session shows how to interview, gather information and turn your story into the kind of “sticky” story that makes people give, whether for major donors, direct-mail letters, websites or on the phone. Participants will leave with a much improved version of their story, and at least one will win a decent prize. Sean Triner, Pareto Fundraising, Ultimo, NSW

DS6: Connecting With the 3D Donor As fundraisers, we all speak to our donors’ brains. Some of us speak to their hearts. Very few of us have a clue how to speak to their souls. Yet, our donors live their lives, moment to moment, in all three states. In order to form deep and loyal human connections with our donors we need to learn to “speak in 3D”. More than that, your donors are well aware that they live in 3D. Our original quantitative research in Canada tells us that 78 percent of donors say that their giving is an extension of their spiritual beliefs, and 93 percent of donors say their giving is an essential part of their human experience. Donors want to hear from charities in 3D, and it’s incumbent upon us to learn how to speak in this language. The seven passion tools are brought to life by means of the printed word, visual images, storytelling and compelling video. Participants will laugh many times, and cry at least once. DS7: Half the Fun is Getting There: How the Supporter Journey Will Help You Reach Your Goals and Make You Love Your Job Again As development offices evolve to focus more on the lifetime value of a donor, fundraising has become more about the journey than the destination. But are you providing your supporters experiences that continually motivate them to help you thrive? In a world where communicating is complex and every investment is scrutinized, it can be challenging to make supporter experiences meaningful. In this session we’ll coach on how to move beyond “donor management” to the “supporter journey” where you will use storytelling, targeting, personal interaction and ongoing cultivation to capture the hearts and minds of your supporters for a lifetime. MT9: Donor-Centered Leadership Approved for 1.25 ACFRE Management Credits Backed by four years of research with 1,700 development professionals and more than 8,000 CEOs, board members and donors, Donor-Centered Leadership offers surprising statistical evidence about why good fundraisers move on prematurely and what it will take to keep them on the job longer and working productively. In plain language, author and researcher Penelope Burk shows employers how they can easily measure the real cost of premature staff turnover and the financial benefits of bringing this pressing problem under control. While Donor-Centered Leadership has much to say about fundraising managers and decision makers, it also reveals what young fundraisers want, illustrating an urgent need to help them gain experience more quickly to address the coming exodus of senior practitioners who are verging on retirement. Donor-Centered Leadership also offers sobering insights into leadership volunteers’ lack of confidence about their own fundraising abilities, offering practical solutions on how to turn a hesitant, under-productive board into one that fundraisers are proud to serve.

PG4: The Impending Death of Unrestricted Gifts For the last 30 years, charities have depended on unrestricted gifts from the World War II generations. With the baby boomers in their peak earning years and entering retirement, there has been a significant generational shift in the donor base. In this session, Brian will share the findings from his book with Robert Wahlers, The Philanthropic Planning Companion: A Charitable Giving Guide for Fundraisers and Advisors, exploring why this change in generational cohorts will make unrestricted gifts an endangered species. These changes make it absolutely vital for charities to embrace not only donor-centered fundraising but also a philanthropic planning approach with prospects. If you want to know how to build a 21st century individual gifts and gift planning program that takes into account the thoughts and behaviors of the next generations of donors, don’t miss this session.

What do shredded files, beach homes and red corvettes have in common? They are all key players in some pretty hair-raising plots involving fund development professionals and the organizations they worked for. Now more than ever before, we see an overwhelming mistrust and misconduct in the fund development arena. As donors become increasingly cautious and scrutinize organizations, we are being examined through the public microscope with a great deal of skepticism. This session will candidly discuss some of the issues that many of us have dealt with. It will answer some of the most common questions and misconceptions. The AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards has been identified as the most significant benefit of membership in AFP! In fact, one might say that we and our organizations “live or die” by this code.

But one day, while watching Oprah, she was awakened to the atrocities in the Congo: women gang-raped and demoralized and millions dead from the worst war since World War II. She decided, at that moment, to become an activist and a sister. As the first grassroots activist in the U.S. working to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the Congo, she began with a lone 30-mile run and from there founded Run for Congo Women. CF2: Outcomes, Outputs, and Measures—Oh My!
Nothing is more powerful than first-person stories about how your agency is changing and saving lives. Yet nonprofit professionals often assume that donors fully understand the reasons why their organization needs funding. Stories have an inherent capacity to engage our emotions because they are about the irregularities in our lives. You will be guided through an interactive journey to understand an easy five-step process for creating a fully developed case statement. You will know how to select the most effective strategy for capturing, organizing and serving up impactful stories that in turn help your organization increase donor support through a well-crafted and presented case statement.
Proving social impact, measuring success—and “claiming” outcomes has put increased pressures on both the funders and nonprofits of the world. Return on investment (ROI) is important, but charities often find it difficult to really articulate impact. This session will be a panel discussion of leading experts who are in the trenches every day. They will share best practices when it comes to making a case for your cause.

CI1: Rebounding from a Catastrophic Natural Event—The 2011 Texas Range Fires In 2011 nonprofits across the U.S. battled natural disasters. Severe winter storms in the North were followed by flooding with the spring thaw and heavy rains. In the Southwest drought conditions lead to record-breaking fires across many states. April storms spawned tornados farther north than usual and clusters of storms in the Southeast. Internationally NGOs have been taxed to meet the increase in natural disasters from earthquakes and related tsunami waves to hurricanes and droughts. NGO/nonprofit leaders can’t control the obstacles Mother Nature creates, but we can be prepared to handle the aftermath and decrease the impact. In this hands-on session three nonprofit leaders who led their organizations through extraordinary circumstances will share their challenges and the insights that came after the disaster had passed. MG3: The Power of Love in Major Gifts Development
Over the past decade nonprofit organizations have been inundated with Internet services and technology options. This session will focus your organization on how it can integrate offline fundraising with online strategies. Content is based on content from the five books Ted has written on this topic.
At its best, philanthropy, love of people, requires mutual effort. Wooing major donors is just a start. Savvy fundraisers continue to earn their donors’ trust and confidence and build long-term relationships with their organizations by lovingly attending to their donors’ needs. How do you discern your donors’ needs? How do you meaningfully connect with your major donors? What challenges do you face? This session will consider key research about the motivations and needs of major donors and invite you to share what you have learned about the power of love in major gifts development. You will leave with some fresh ideas, practical strategies and clever tools to help you meaningfully connect with your donors in the months and years between gifts. DS5: Strategic Stewardship: CrossChannel Stewardship that Scales In today’s fundraising world, many nonprofits use a variety of stewardship communication channels to reach prospects and donors. Direct mail still plays a key role, online giving continues to increase and social media is growing in popularity. But it’s one thing to acquire new donors; it’s another thing to keep them. Stewardship is both an art and science that’s too often approached using the same tactics year after year, simply because those tactics have worked before. Now, more than ever, nonprofit leaders need to evaluate the wealth of available donor data to see how it might encourage a new strategy.

MT6: How Many Chefs Does it Take to Run a Small Kitchen? Why is it that some small nonprofit boards tend to get mired down in crises and create a feeling of dysfunction? Are these familiar issues for you: lack of fundraising experience or the desire to do so; resistance to change; focusing on the “little” picture and forgetting the big one; or micromanaging staff? Your board members may have the best of intentions, but you must help them put “FUN” (First-class Understanding of Nonprofits) into the board’s “DysFUNction.” It’s like running a kitchen with a lot of cooks and even more recipes. Your board requires guidance from both the CEO and CDO, the “chefs” who must work as a TEAM to lead the cooks and make the “kitchen” experience even better for the volunteers and for the organization. This interactive session will allow participants to share their own experiences, hear case studies and practice various learning tools in creating a positive experience of change for boards in search of that “FUN.” This session is an excellent experience for development professionals, executive directors and volunteer board members of small nonprofits facing volunteer leadership challenges.

She decided, at that moment, to become an activist and a sister. As the first grassroots activist in the U.S. working to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the Congo, she began with a lone 30-mile run and from there founded Run for Congo Women. CF3: Raising More Money From Your Business Community Is corporate philanthropy dead or dying? If so, how can we resurrect it? Today’s economy is challenging for corporations, individuals and especially for nonprofits. If your organization is wondering how to best approach businesses in a challenging economy, this session will be one you don’t want to miss. Although corporations and businesses contributed less than 5 percent of all philanthropic dollars last year in the United States, much more is given through gifts in kind, corporate sponsorships and the personal donations of individual corporate leaders. And, in a typical capital campaign, businesses often provide a much more significant percentage of the overall goal. stay connected: afpmeet.org

This session will identify eight common assumptions about religious giving in the United States and will examine their validity. The session will focus on giving to religious organizations like charities whose primary mission is religious discovery, enhancement, etc. This includes giving to religious ministries on TV, radio and in print. DR4: If You Build It, They Might Not Come: How to Fail Informatively
DS9: Cutting Edge Face-to-Face Fundraising From Around the World
Your donors and volunteers demanded it, you built it, and then they’ll come! Is all lost? When a Web-based campaign fails, what’s next? Your secret to future success is learning the art of failing informatively. Our panel will share examples of Web-based fundraising projects that initially did not meet expectations, often with miserable results and a negative return on investment. But, in an environment where experimenting, testing, learning and correcting is encouraged, even just a small tweak to a failed project can produce dramatically different results, as long as quitting isn’t an option. Part therapy session, part educational session, we will explore tactics to create a healthy work environment for failure, nonthreatening methods to analyze failed projects, what do to with a board or boss who won’t accept failure and how to create actionable plans to try (and try) again. Not attending might be the utter failure.
Face-to-face fundraising has been the single biggest new tool used for recruiting regular committed donors in the world over the last decade. It is now used in more than 35 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia. It has enabled local and especially international NGOs and UN agencies to start raising significant funds in markets such as India, China, Thailand and South Korea as “traditional” tools, such as direct mail, struggled. This session will take you on a whirlwind tour featuring the cutting-edge best practice in the use of this powerful committed donor recruitment tool; illustrate how it has been successfully integrated with other programs such as telephone and new media; how to best retain and develop your F2F recruited donors and the future challenges for F2F fundraising.

This presentation will focus on how this relatively small shop raised these significant friends and funds through harsh economic realities and evolved the event to a friend-raising event staple, citing specific examples and offering valuable tips from learned experiences.

DS2: Be Creative and Authentic— A Performance that is Memorable, Comfortable and Produces Results Too slick or too polished—under-rehearsed or uncomfortable—a bad performance on either end of the spectrum can cost an organization the much-needed gift. How can approaches from the arts enable the professional fundraiser to deliver a more effective and memorable performance? How can these strategies be utilized for training a core of volunteer solicitors to be effective co-stars? How can creative thinking emblazon on donors’ memories a relationship they wish to sustain? This session looks at tactics utilized by professional performers to overcome their own limitations to not only effectively communicate with the intended audience but leave them wanting more. Participants will gain general knowledge and specific examples to enhance their effectiveness in making asks, to increase volunteer solicitor comfort, as well as to create a memorable and meaningful experience for the donor.

MG7: Philanthropy and Major Gift Fundraising in Asia: Myths and Realities All the indicators point toward China overtaking the U.S. as the largest economy in the world in five to ten years time, and India may not be that far behind. Asia represents half the population of the planet and will over time represent half its wealth. But massive inequalities in wealth and opportunities are already apparent and are likely to get worse. Could philanthropy be one way to reduce inequalities, address some real social needs and build a better sense of social cohesion? Bill Gates and Warren Buffett certainly believe so and have invested considerable efforts in getting the new billionaires of China and India to think more about giving some of their wealth away. However, the big problem in Asia now is a lack of understanding about the process, developed over many years in the US, by which nonprofits cultivate relationships.

MKT6: Building Community— The Future for Individual Fundraisers Social media - wonderful for people to talk to each other but, so far, not much money. Time to think again! Perhaps it’s the outcome, closer communities, not the medium that has the potential. And anyway, the days of using single media are well gone. Multi-channel rules! In this session, and backed by recent research, Stephen will explore the opportunities and dangers of creating communities. He will demonstrate how the use of multiple and integrated media will transform fundraising, outlining twelve techniques that very few charities in the world are yet using - things that in five years time will be mainstream. Getting there will require the combination of new technologies with rock-solid direct-marketing fundraising. Now, that is exciting...but definitely scary.

Do you know about the “Top Ten Ways to Get Your Nonprofit into Trouble?” This session deals with all these issues, as well as the increasing scrutiny of the sector by state attorneys general, the IRS and the media. This topic has some urgency, given recent cases and past congressional hearings. How widespread is fraud in the nonprofit sector? Is your organization vulnerable? The Actors Fund Responding to Essential and Evolving Needs The Actors Fund is a national human services organization that helps all professionals in performing arts and entertainment in times of need, crisis, or transition. With an array of social, health, housing, and employment services, The Fund is a safety net for this community of writers, make-up artists, directors, stagehands, dancers, musicians, and more. While these professionals are used to ups and downs in their careers—more so than people in other professions—the economic downturn and industry changes have made The Fund’s programs more critically important. To address this challenge, The Actors Fund raised more than $10.1 million to significantly enhance its current endowment, immediately improve and expand its key programs, as well as strengthen its emergency financial assistance fund. CCS is proud to partner with The Actors Fund to help support the performing arts and entertainment community. Top: (l-r) Jonathan Tisch, Annette Bening, and Kevin McCollum led the special campaign.
