Welcome
to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ inaugural TechKnow conference. There isn’t an event like this in the nonprofit world—a meeting about technology developed especially for fundraisers. You’re not going to find a lot of jargon or techno-speak, but presenters, exhibitors and volunteers devoted to one thing—helping you understand how technology can help your organization. Twenty years ago, fundraisers needed to focus only on the message. Now we have to understand the medium—how to inspire donors in 140 characters or less on Twitter, or keep in contact with someone on Facebook, or network on LinkedIn or post video on YouTube to demonstrate impact. Two decades ago, we couldn’t keep the kind of personalized and unique data we can manage today with the touch of a button. Technology has turned our world upside-down in many ways. It has created many opportunities, but also many challenges, and the fast pace of change has made many of us unsure and apprehensive about where to turn.
2012 AFP TechKnow Conference Education Taskforce Chair: Michael J. Baker, CFRE
TechKnow is here to assuage that uncertainty. To cut through the clutter of so many advertisements and claims about technology to tell you— clearly and directly—about what technology can (and cannot) do for your organization. To show you how you can use technology inexpensively to reach and inspire donors. And to identify the right investments you need to make in your technology programs.
Members: Grant Martin, CFRE, Vice Chair, Professional Advancement Division
This is the first time we’ve held a program like this, and we’re excited you’re here. Like all AFP conferences, we want you to be part of the experience. So ask your questions. Engage with the presenters. Talk with the exhibitors. Take part in the online discussions through social media.
John W. Dawe, CFRE
Technology is the future, so we have to understand it—not the jargon and nuts and bolts but the impact on our organizations. It doesn’t have to be confusing or complicated, and this is the first step toward your greater understanding and utilization of technology in your fundraising efforts. Thanks for being with us for our inaugural TechKnow event and enjoy the conference!
John E. Joslin, CFRE Amy Wolfe, CFRE, MPPA
Stephanie Cory, CFRE Natalie Gupton, MPA Mark Hierlihy, CFRE Ron Vassallo We would like to thank the members of the 2012 AFP TechKnow Conference Education Taskforce and Planet Philanthropy for their tireless efforts to make this event possible and for all their work in advancing philanthropy throughout the world.

Building Donor Loyalty Osceola 5/6 Adrian Sargeant, Ph.D., International Fundraising Consultant, @AdrianSargeant Nonprofits continue to lose their donors at an alarming rate, with typical new donor retention running at only 30 percent. This matters since even small improvements in loyalty in the here and now can have a dramatic impact on the lifetime value of the fundraising database. In this session we explore what might be done to improve on the current pattern of performance, drawing on 20 years of research and the very best of professional practice. We will particularly emphasize the role of technology in retention and the analyses that can help fundraisers develop a successful retention strategy.

Dave Will, Peach New Media, @PeachDave This session will introduce the new rules of online learning that take us from a world where “information transfer” is considered “learning” to a new world that allows our participants to have a truly meaningful learning experience. Many refer to webinars and webcasts as online learning when, in fact, this session will challenge that misconception. Information transfer and learning are not the same thing, but most are challenged with ideas on how to improve the online learning process. Following the concepts in Dr. John Medina’s book, Brain Rules, we will engage session participants while designing a true online learning program consisting of on-demand content, community interaction and live events. The audience will provide their ideas and the presenters will facilitate a discussion led by examples of some real-world online-learning successes. There will be three points that will drive participation from the attendees. At one point, attendees are asked to collaborate with small groups and present their ideas to the session. Another time they are asked to work individually. And finally we will be raffling off John Medina’s Brain Rules for an individual in the session.

Learning Labs in the AFP TechKnow Hub ASI - The Blurring of Web, CRM and Social Media Robin Fisk, ASI, @ASI_RobinFisk First, there were donor databases, which we later learned to call CRM. Then came websites. Then came social media. It’s only because they arrived at different times that we have separate activities, budgets and systems for them. Those days are coming to an end — and the convergence of Web, CRM and social are now under way. Learn how you can leverage this convergence to strengthen the relationship with your constituents, further the reach of your organization and improve fundraising performance.

So where then, do organizations harvest data from? What are the different sources and, more importantly, what are you supposed to do with all these data? Is social media a viable and realistic source of information or is it still too superficial and “touchy feely” to deliver on critical ask campaigns or drive fundraising dollars? So many questions, yet one organization took the time to sit down and plan a strategy that harvested data from multiple sources into one single repository and, in turn, apply it to its integrated social media campaign. Join us to learn how the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind applied smart social media strategies to leverage existing constituent information and harvest new data to build community engagement, recruit new volunteers, raise awareness of its mission and support its fundraising efforts.

What’s In A Number? ...Only Everything! ...How The Best Fundraisers Use Data To Drive Profit Naples Penelope Burk, Cygnus Applied Research, @PenelopeBurk, #AFPTechKnowBurk Today’s fundraising practices and beliefs were developed at a time when donors were less demanding, competition was less severe and fundraisers could rely on an unlimited supply of people willing to give. But as wealth shifts to a more independently minded donor, one who is more questioning and harder to reach, fundraisers need to know what donors want and how to provide it. Donor-Centered Fundraising is Penelope Burk’s breakthrough strategy that sustains donor loyalty and raises more generous gifts by bringing fundraising in line with donors’ modern-day requirements. Defined by a decade of research with thousands of donors and fundraisers, Donor-Centered Fundraising is the only statistically supported fundraising philosophy with the power to bring donors and not-for-profits together to measurably increase growth in net revenue. It’s a challenge to improve net revenue, however, in a giving environment where donor attrition is rampant and donors who do stay loyal are trending toward supporting fewer causes. When fundraisers can no longer rely solely on volume to drive profit, what other performance measures are dependable indicators of success? In this thought-provoking address, Penelope reveals how boards, CEOs and even senior development officers rely on the wrong measures when evaluating performance. Backed by her most recent research, she presents a compelling rationale for measuring fundraising differently so that more money can be raised in any economy and regardless of shifting donor sensibilities.

Based on the book 101 Social Media Tactics for Nonprofits (Wiley, Feb. 2012), author Melanie Mathos will provide nonprofits 101 ways to engage supporters, share their missions and inspire action using the social Web in a fast-paced, case study-driven format. Nonprofits know they need to start engaging with supporters through social media channels. They identify who they want to reach, set objectives and build a strategy. Many nonprofits get stuck at this point because it is hard to keep up with the ever-evolving world of social media tools and tactics in what has emerged as a vital communication channel. This session will help nonprofits discover new ways of deploying their strategy and meeting their social media objectives.

In this session, we will explore proven strategies that that will help you increase results while saving time and money. Attendees can expect to learn how to: • Create and automate campaigns proven to increase engagement • Improve conversions through a customized email experience for donors and potential donors • Create efficiencies to reduce your workload
Hugging your followers, loving on your fans and otherwise thinking the new media world is all unicorns and rainbows is really tough when donations and branding (often in that order) are the only two large goals of marketing or fundraising efforts. The world of social media is full of data and amazing toolsets. In this presentation, we will discuss good and bad social media measurement, toolsets for collecting useful social media data, and how to use that data to move your programs forward and ensure that you’re not throwing money into the pit that is social media guru-dom. As DJ Quik says, “If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense.” This is something that we refer back to day after day, and this presentation will help you to ensure that, if your social marketing efforts do not make you dollars, you’re able to make the decision to change them because not doing so just does not make sense.

Concurrent Education Sessions Social Networking, Fundraising and the Successful Nonprofit Naples Ted Hart, ACFRE, Charities Aid Foundation of America, @TedHart Internationally acclaimed speaker, author and e-fundraising guru Ted Hart, ACFRE, will present on how to stay ahead of the curve in using technology with alumni. Social media strategies and techniques are here to stay. They aren’t a fad that will fade. Interactivity online and with social networking sites are important for the overall engagement of alumni for many purposes— communication, development of loyalty, information sharing, sense of belonging, and simply for fun. These are tools and techniques that have and will continue to change the way nonprofit institutions communicate with their constituents and supporters. Mr. Hart will share in very practical and easy-to-understand ways, a step-bystep approach to building social capital with your supporters.

Anthony Pisapia, CFRE NPower PA, @NPowerPa LinkedIn is a powerful tool for nonprofits hoping to learn more about their prospective and current donors. Beyond learning about a person’s interests and background, it can show you connections that you never knew your donors had. There are also powerful hidden tools within LinkedIn that can expand your organization’s network and reach. Come find out how well connected your nonprofit is!
Gamification: Using Game Mechanics to Boost Fundraising, Engagement and Connection Osceola 3/4 Frank Barry, BlackBaud, Inc., @Franswaa You’ve seen “gamification” everywhere, but you likely never noticed. From Farmville and Mafia Wars to Foursquare and Gowalla, gamification has spread like wild fire in recent years. Daily deal platforms are motivating you with group-buying, credit card companies are rewarding you with cash back and airlines are offering you free flights for miles/points. But did you know that nonprofits have been using gaming tactics for years? Join us and we’ll show you real world examples of “gamified” fundraising initiatives, simple gaming tactics that have been proven to work, and how to take advantage of gamification at your organization.
