END OF YEAR MESSAGE – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (AG) The holiday season is a reminder of the importance of reflection, gratitude, and celebration. As the curtains close on 2023, I am compelled to reflect on a successful year we have had at the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) as we promote a culture of quality through standards. Allow me to reflect on the wins made throughout the year starting with the certification of several laboratories, locally manufactured products and our first two Bed and Breakfast facilities. A new certification programme was also launched; the 901 Certification programme based on the National Standard ‘GYS 901 Certification for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)’ was launched at the fourth successful National Quality Awards (NQA) in October. The NQA saw over sixty (60) appplicants in the services and manufacturing sectors.
Mr. Al Donavon Fraser Executive Director (Ag.)
Additionally, the Bureau trained hundreds of public and private sector personnel on Standards and continued to provide technical assistance to organisations looking to become internationally certified. As the National Measurement Institute, the GNBS also continued its work in Metrology with the introduction of new testing services including the non-destructive testing of concrete structures and gold jewellery and the launch of the verification of Net Content on prep-packaged goods at wholesale and retail businesses. Meanwhile, crucial measurement services such as legal metrology and calibration in the areas of mass, volume, temperature, and pressure and more were provided to companies, especially those servicing the health, manufacturing and oil and gas sectors. Finally, the Bureau continued to monitor the seventeen categories of imported and locally manufactured products for labelling and quality requirements. From this, thousands of pieces of substandard items were destroyed by the GNBS as it continues to protect consumers. I extend heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders who showed commitment through compliance and conformance to the standards and measurement services we offer here at the GNBS. The Bureau looks forward to your continued support in the New Year. Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year from Team GNBS.

The GNBS team of skilled Technicians, demonstrated to visitors at its booth, the critical role of calibration in ensuring accuracy and reliability of measurements. GNBS’s commitment to quality extends seamlessly into the realm of product inspections. With the Christmas Season approaching, GuyExpo provided the ideal opportunity to educate thousands of visitors on the standards and requirements followed by the GNBS in the daily monitoring of the seventeen (17) categories of products offered for sale to consumers. These products range from children’s toys and playthings to decorative lighting and electrical equipment and fittings, which all undergo rigorous inspection to ensure compliance with relevant national standards.
