On May 20, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) joined with other National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) to observe World Metrology Day under the theme: “Measurements for all time, for all people.”
Whether you notice it or not, Metrology is the invisible force behind modern life. It ensures the accuracy of GPS systems, the safety of buildings and infrastructure, the precision of medical treatments, and so much more. Without it, the systems we rely on every day would not function with the reliability we take for granted
To commemorate the day, the GNBS collaborated with the Ministry of Education to engage students of Technical Institutes, hosted radio Programmes, share information on social media, and directly engaged members of the public and businesses on the use and benefits of accurate measurements
This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Metre Convention, the landmark agreement that was signed by representatives of seventeen nations, setting the framework for global use of the Metric Units of measurement
STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM HALF-DAY TRAINING ON METROLOGY
To observe World Metrology Day, the GNBS in collaboration with the Ministry of Education engaged students from seven Technical Institutes from across the country on the importance of accurate and reliable measurements in their various fields of study.
The students from Essequibo Region Two, Leonora Region Three, Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC), the Government Technical Institute (GTI), Mahaicony Region Five, New Amsterdam Region Six and Linden Region Ten, were educated on “Why Measurements Matter”
They discovered how accurate measurements are at the heart of everything, from the fuel we pump and the food we eat, to the construction of buildings and the development of cuttingedge technology. They were also given a tour of the GNBS State-of-the-art laboratories.
Meanwhile, Inspectors at the GNBS suboffices across the country joined in the observance of World Metrology Day through activities including engagements with the business community, participation in radio programmes, and a presentation to health professionals.
The participants and listeners were educated on the correct use of the metric system as well as their measuring instruments used in trade, healthcare and other sectors
BUSINESS STUDENTS OF THE SOUTH RUIMVELDT SECONDARY VISIT GNBS
The GNBS is committed to knowledge sharing and nurturing of the next generation in relation to Standards and Measurements. In this regard, the Corporate Communications, Legal Metrology and Industrial Metrology Departments engaged twenty students from the South Ruimveldt Secondary School on May 28, 2025 at the Head Office
They were enlightened about the services offered by the Bureau, the International System of Units and Consumer Protection Information. Additionally, they were given a guided tour of the Bureau’s Legal Metrology Laboratories.
GNBS HOSTS PUBLIC CONSULTATION SESSION ON LPG STANDARDS

GNBS CERTIFIES THREE NEW LABORATORIES, THREE OTHERS SUCCESSFULLY RECERTIFIED
During May and June, a total of three local laboratories were certified under the GNBS’ Laboratory Certification Programme
On May 19, Geo-Enviro Support Services was certified for conforming to the requirements of the GYS 170 Certification. Meanwhile, on Geo-Solutions Guyana Inc. and Allied Health Medical Lab were certified on June 13 and June 26, respectively

Meanwhile, during May and June, four laboratories were recertified. These include the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) Laboratory, the Veterinary Services Laboratory of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Testing Laboratory and Home Care Medical Laboratory

During May and June, three local companies were successfully certified under the GNBS’ Approved Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme.
On May 21, Heather’s Creation and Products received its certificate to use the ‘Made in Guyana Mark’ on its Cooking Sauces (Tamarind Cooking Sauce, Tamarind and Pineapple Cooking Sauce, Pineapple Jerk Marinade, Banana Pineapple Cooking Sauce), Coconut Flour Oatmeal Cookies (Original, Ginger and Fruits and Vegetable Flavours) and Exotic Spice Blend
On June 04, Pure Aqua was approved to utilise the mark on its 500ml and 19L bottled water. Finally, on June 23, Treev’s Natural Blends was certified for its Green Seasoning, Fish Seasoning, Pepper Sauce, Grill Meat Rub, Assorted Garlic Sauce (Garlic Sauce, Garlic & Pepper Sauce and Garlic & Ginger Sauce)
During the period, the GNBS also successfully recertified five businesses under the Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme. Those companies: Basdeo’s Dynasty, Aquafina Water and Ice Inc., Maliyah’s Kitchen, Fresh Packagers and Marcia’s Products were lauded for continually maintaining the requirements of the certification programme
Their products include Pepper Sauce, Mango Achar, spices, salted fish, mithai, milk fudge, cassava bread and cassareep and bottled water
The Made in Guyana Standards Mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products on the local and international markets and is a signature of quality for authentic Guyanese Products

GNBS PROMOTES ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDSPARTICIPATES IN WED WALK
World Environment Day (WED) was observed on June 05, 2025 The GNBS joined in observing this day under the theme “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution, ” urging stakeholders to implement National and International Standards to combat pollution
Currently, the GNBS has several environment related standards including the 14001 standard, GYS 9 –10:2014, GYS 263:2010, GYS 207:2002 and finally the GYS 207:2002: Part 16 These documents address environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable and harmful materials, such as plastics and hazardous chemicals among others
As part of the WED observances, Team GNBS also proudly joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) World Environment Day Green Walk on June 01.
GNBS TRAINS STAKEHOLDERS ON INTERNAL AUDITING AND LAB SAFETY MANAGEMENT
At the end of June, the GNBS Business Development Team facilitated a three-day training course on Internal Auditing of ISO Management Systems Sixteen persons from the public and private sector benefited from this training.
The internal auditing training course helped participants to acquire tools to execute an effective audit process, write intelligible and accurate non-conformity statements and assess the significance of the findings and prepare the audit report
Meanwhile, at the end of May, twenty participants of the course were educated on the requirements of the GYS 235 Standard and how it can be implemented to promote safety management within a laboratory. Additionally, it helped participants to identify unsafe practices within the work environment through risk assessments, developing safety policies and providing guidance for conducting safety audits to ensure conformance to the standard and applicable legal requirements

GNBS JOINS IN CELEBRATING WORLD ACCREDITATION DAY 2025
On June 09, the GNBS joined with other National Standard Bodies (NSB), Accreditation and Conformity Assessment Bodies to observe World Accreditation Day under the theme "Accreditation: Empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) "
The GNBS, as the National Accreditation Focal Point (NAFP), took the time to highlight its Technical Assistance programme aimed at helping local laboratories achieve accreditation to two major international standards. These are the ISO 15189:2022, "Medical laboratories Requirements for quality and competence, " and the ISO 17025:2017, "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories "
The Bureau, through its Business Development, is working with several public and private institutions looking to achieve accreditation.
GNBS HONOURS ITS WORKING MOTHERS AND FATHERS
The GNBS, this year, provided lunches and tokens to all mothers and fathers employed by the Bureau as they were recognised for their contributions in the workplace and at their homes as parents
GNBS COLLABORATES WITH CEDA TO HOST 2-DAY WORKSHOP FOR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES
On June 30 and July 01, 2025, the Caribbean Export Development Agency, in partnership with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), hosted a workshop titled “Entering the EU Market: Get Ready for Certification ” Led by international consultant Alfons An Dujivenbode of Globally Cool, the session provided local businesses with practical guidance on meeting European Union certification and compliance requirements
The workshop aimed to equip Guyanese exporters and entrepreneurs with the tools to unlock new opportunities in the EU market Participants gained insights into product certification, market access regulations, and best practices for aligning with international trade standards supporting Guyana’s broader goals of economic growth, export readiness, and private sector development
GNBS REPRESENTED AT CHINESE SEMINARS ON EDUCATION AND GREEN DEVELOPMENT INDUSTRY STANDARDISATION FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
in June, Head of Corporate Communications, Lloyd David and Head of Business Development, Al Fraser participated in a two-week seminar on Education Standardisation for Developing Countries. This seminar was facilitated by Ministry of Commerce of China.
The seminar exposed participants to the ISO and Chinese standards relevant to the field of Education, design and manufacturing Participants had the opportunities to visit several universities and other education institutions in Chengdu and Beijing including a primary and a secondary school to understand the level of teaching and learning offered.
Meanwhile, Technical Officer II of the Standardisation Department, Jo-Ann Busgith attended the seminar on Green Industry Standardisation Cooperation for Developing Countries in China as a part of a multilateral training program to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Guyana and China and develop capacity in the field of human resources.
This programme was sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and exposed participants to Chinese culture, developments and co-operation work in the field of Green Industry Standardisation
