Dear Members and Friends,
As leaders of the Guild of Music Supervisors, we are thrilled to welcome you to the 10th annual GMS ‘STATE OF MUSIC IN MEDIA’ CONFERENCE. We cannot believe this is our 10th Conference! 10 years of bringing together the greatest community of people telling and contributing to stories with music. We have always sought to present the highest caliber of panels educating on the craft of Music Supervision, and today is no different.
The GMS Conference is held for the purpose of sharing knowledge about the craft of Music Supervision as well as highlighting other valuable aspects tied to what we do, including advances in technology, music clearance and negotiating, the song selection process, music representation, the role of music supervisors in various medias, and more.
In celebrating 10 years, our Education Committee decided on the theme of “A Legacy of Innovation: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future.” While music supervision has been around for more than 10 years, this landmark inspired them to look back and spotlight the incredible moments that music supervisors have created along the way: moments like those created by the shorthand that comes from a longtime collaborative relationship, like that of Direcctor Doug Liman and Music Supervisor Julianne Jordan, who have worked together since the 1990’s indie hit Swingers to this summer’s The Instigators; the unforgettable phenomenon of unsigned artist Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You)” reaching #1 on the charts after a use in the 1994 film Reality Bites; and MTV’s evolution from music discovery via music videos to music discovery via reality TV. We will also end the day with a Roundtable of Music Supervisors talking about their best work from the 90’s and 2000’s, and how their work has changed since then.
Emphasizing how music supervisors have helped tell stories with music through the years and the impacts those placements have had on both artists and culture is a reminder of the power of a great synch and the importance of the craft of Music Supervision. We often encounter the misconception that being a music supervisor is simply making a cool playlist; many of you already know there is considerably more to the craft, and if you don’t, you will by the end of today.
We thank every member of the Education Committee for putting together today’s programming, as well as GMS staff and volunteers whose hard work makes this day possible.
We thank our sponsors for supporting this community and showing up when we need them. We couldn’t do it without you.
Lastly, we thank YOU for being part of today’s GMS Conference. We love this community and are so glad you are here!
Sincerely,
Lindsay Wolfington & Heather Guibert President and Vice President, The Guild of Music Supervisors
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR VENUE PARTNER
SYNCH AND DRINK BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Welcome to the 10th Annual GMS State of Music In Media Conference!
For a decade, we have elevated the craft of marrying music in media through education and community. Whether connecting on Zoom or gathering in person, navigating a global pandemic, or weathering multiple labor strikes, we have stood together. Our craft has been an essential part of the media landscape for many years, and this history inspired this year’s theme “A Legacy of Innovation: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future”
Today we will honor musical legacies like singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb and celebrate long-term collaborations, such as that between Director Doug Liman and Music Supervisor Julianne Jordan. We’ll also pay tribute to peers who have built fruitful careers, including Julia Michels, John Houlihan, Deva Anderson, Bonnie Greenberg, and more. At the same time, we are committed to upholding our role and legacy as a knowledge hub for the synch community, including synch agents, labels, publishers, clearance specialists, artists, songwriters, composers, and beyond.
Our programming reflects this commitment. You’ll find panels like “Synch Talk: Exploring the Indispensable Roles Played in the Intricate World of Synch,” highlighting the importance of synch agents, and “Going a Different Direction: Why we did NOT choose your song,” providing insights into what happens after a song is pitched to a creative. We’re also offering a range of businessfocused sessions, from the basics in “Music Clearance 101” to mock negotiations, panels on different business practices around the world, and navigating the 35-year reversion statute. Additionally, there are sessions that spotlight the craft involved in different facets of Music Supervision, from managing performance-driven projects to complex television series, advertising, trailers, and our annual celebration of Emmy-nominated music supervisors, songwriters, and composers.
Looking ahead is as crucial as honoring the past. We are ecstatic to present robust mentorship sessions, “From Coordinator to Supervisor: Navigating the Leap,” and “Creativity Beyond Budgetary Constraints: Music Supervising Indie Films,” providing a strong foundation for those pursuing a career in Music Supervision.
We understand these are uncertain times in our industry, with job cuts and reduced opportunities stemming from recent strikes. However, we believe in the strength and resilience of our community. Let this conference be a reminder to support one another, stay steadfast, and continue fostering the collaborative spirit that defines us. Together, we will uphold and build upon our collective legacy. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors and our amazing volunteers for making this event possible.
Thank you for joining us this year!
Warm Regards,
The 2024 GMS Education Committee

The goal of the DEI Committee is to help push the music supervision industry into a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable direction. In service of that, the committee works to program relevant panels for the Guild and runs the popular Mentorship Program. And it’s now time for the next round!
This program matches working music supervisors with vetted mentees for a low-commitment-high-reward mentorship matchup!
There have been 3 rounds of the Mentorship program thus far, totaling up to 121 handpicked pairings. Mentors and mentees alike rated the overall satisfaction with their experience as 4.56 out of 5 on average.
Are you a working music supervisor in the Guild looking to give back, with a nominal time investment (one hour a month)? Sign up to be a mentor! Scan the QR code.

Hear what some of our mentorship participants are saying:
I had a positive experience with the Guild of Music Supervisors mentor program! The GMS-provided weekby-week guide made the program manageable and our meetings were substantive. My mentee Ana Sang, was a smart and engaged mentee and it was a very good match between mentor and mentee. We had a productive and enjoyable experience working together, and I have great confidence in Ana’s future success. I also really learned from Ana as well and I would recommend the program to others. I am confident that in the near future that Ana will be as successful as I know she will be and she will end up hiring me for jobs!
-Janet Rich, mentor
This was my first time as a mentor with the Guild of Music Supervisors, and it was truly a rewarding experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to teach my mentee about our field, and was very impressed by her thoughtful questions and the drive she has to succeed in this industry..
-Peter Davis, mentor

I’m grateful that The Guild recognizes the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in this work and built a program to assist aspiring music supervisors of color. I genuinely appreciate this program, my mentor, and her willingness to be a resource to me beyond this program. The curriculum is fantastic - it’s genuinely like a music supervision course.
-Ayana Jones, mentee
My partnership with my mentor has been invaluable. While having a regular 9-5, on the side I’ve been very slowly working my way into freelance music supervision since 2014. I’ve taken formal classes, I’ve read/owned books, I’ve done an internship, I follow music sups on socials, you name it. My mentor has helped me make sense of how to apply the things I learned, in addition to teaching me new things. He’s extremely patient with me, never makes me feel like
I’m asking a stupid question, is excited about my projects and happy for me and he genuinely wants to help me succeed. I’m very grateful for the pairing and I feel that we will remain in contact afterwards. This opportunity has truly been a blessing in my life and I can’t wait to see what happens for me next.
