WHY HIP-HOP 50?

When we officially decided to build out a “50 Years of Hip-Hop” Celebration, it was of utmost importance that we spoke about why this artistic expression needed to exist. Hip-Hop is not simply auditory cheesecake but is an artform birthed from a combination of social, economic, and cultural factors resulting from the hardships of inner city life and the systemic sociopolitical issues that afflicted underserved and underrepresented communities of the time.

These dynamic and Innovative MCs use their unique skills of incorporating music and spoken word to share compelling stories of strife, success, love and fear. Their music unites communities, and provides a voice for those who share similar experiences. The titans of the genre laid the foundation for future generations within the community and beyond to fully see and express themselves. Hip-Hop’s global influence is undeniable. From the early days of catching a Hip-Hop song late night on the radio to the music being featured on the most popular television and film productions and finally being incorporated into the biggest pop songs of the day from artists around the world, Hip-Hop has proven itself to be a soundscape for any genre of music and can be used to tell any story. Happy 50th Hip-Hop!
