Dear Members and Friends,
As leaders of the Guild of Music Supervisors, we are thrilled to welcome you to the 9th annual GMS ‘STATE OF MUSIC IN MEDIA’ CONFERENCE. Amidst a challenging summer of strikes, the Guild offers support to our community and continues to promote the craft of Music Supervision for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders within the media industry.
With both sadness and pride, we announce that we will be closing the books on our roles as President and VP. When we stepped into these roles over 4 years ago, we barely had a chance to settle in when the universe over-delivered with the pandemic. There wasn’t a handbook to guide us through this, so we did what we do best, we made lemonade out of lemons. This crisis motivated our membership to create online panels that opened up lines of communication wider than ever and we saw firsthand how supportive our community could be. We worked hard to develop new committees (East Coast, DEI, Brazil and more) and membership more than doubled across the globe, in more than 23 countries and counting. We devoted ourselves to educating and advocating for our craft with the greater entertainment community. In the last year we gathered us all back together for an in-person awards ceremony and for the second year, this conference. They say parenting is one of the hardest jobs you’ll love, well this is a close second. We will not be fading away into the sunset, though, we will continue to serve on the board and champion some of the projects we set into motion. The last, but best and brightest news is that we will be leaving you in the amazing and very capable hands of a new president! Lindsay Wolfington.
Thank you Joel and Madonna for your leadership and your guidance! I am excited to step into the role of President and lead our incredible GMS Board! My goal for the near future is to build upon the strong community and to enhance connection among our membership. I truly look at myself and the Board as your representatives doing the best for our craft. Please feel free to reach out to us and as always, get involved!
Now to today’s conference: The GMS Conference is held as a means of sharing knowledge about the craft of Music Supervision as well as highlighting other important aspects tied to what we do: exploration of all types of media, working with composers, navigating advances in technology, music clearances, and executing on-camera performances, among other topics. Today’s panels do just that, and we commend our Education Committee, panelists, and sponsors for making it all happen.
We look forward to spending a wonderful, educational day with all of you!
Sincerely,
Joel, Madonna, and Lindsay

The GMS Education Committee enthusiastically welcomes you to the 9th Annual GMS State of Music In Media Conference! Every year we work to create programming that excites and educates our community on current practices in music supervision across all media and pertinent issues facing the field today. This year is no exception.
In our initial brainstorms, we asked ourselves “What do we as working music supervisors and licensors want to learn about and share with our community?” We discussed the day to day responsibilities of music supervisor as well as the roles of everyone we work with across the industry. We worked with committees across the Guild, including all Crafts, Membership, DEI, and our growing international presence to create programming representative of the community as a whole.
This year’s conference kicks off with a celebration and deep dive into 50 Years of Hip-Hop, exploring both cultural and technical standpoints on the genre and its influence at large. Another track is the Business of Music Supervision, educating attendees on the issues around freelancing as well as various levels of technical skill sets imperative to the job such as music clearance, navigating the composer and music supervisor relations, and coordinating on-camera performances. We will also be providing a colorful look under the hood of the Craft of Music Supervision across TV, film, trailers, advertising, and video games and other interactive media. Panels range from music supervising unscripted media on a budget, to the way music is a main character in kids and family programming, to the role of sound effects in trailers, and the unique involvement of influencers when licensing music for brands. And for those more interested in technology, please take note of a panel on AI and health and wellness for your ears!
We are also proud to present a robust mentorship session with many of our esteemed music supervisor members, and we look forward to kicking back with you in our hi-fi room full of vinyl when your brain is in need of a break from all the learning.
We’d like to thank all of our Sponsors without whom we would be far less decked out and capable of reaching all of you! And a big thank you to our amazing volunteers for helping us bring our conference to life as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Thank you for joining us this year!

WHY HIP-HOP 50?
When we officially decided to build out a “50 Years of Hip-Hop” Celebration, it was of utmost importance that we spoke about why this artistic expression needed to exist. Hip-Hop is not simply auditory cheesecake but is an artform birthed from a combination of social, economic, and cultural factors resulting from the hardships of inner city life and the systemic sociopolitical issues that afflicted underserved and underrepresented communities of the time.
These dynamic and Innovative MCs use their unique skills of incorporating music and spoken word to share compelling stories of strife, success, love and fear. Their music unites communities, and provides a voice for those who share similar experiences. The titans of the genre laid the foundation for future generations within the community and beyond to fully see and express themselves. Hip-Hop’s global influence is undeniable. From the early days of catching a Hip-Hop song late night on the radio to the music being featured on the most popular television and film productions and finally being incorporated into the biggest pop songs of the day from artists around the world, Hip-Hop has proven itself to be a soundscape for any genre of music and can be used to tell any story. Happy 50th Hip-Hop!

GMS DEI AND MENTORSHIP INITIATIVES
In addition to bringing to fruition the popular Mentorship Program, the GMS DEI and Education Committees have worked to provide a variety of panels, Q&As, office hours, 1-on-1 in-person mentor sessions, online forums, and various opportunities for those in underserved communities in the music for media industry.
The DEI Committee has worked to partner aspiring music supervisors in underserved communities with some of the world’s top music supervisors.
Round 3 of the Mentorship Program (late 2022) was made up of 40 pairings, 80 people total. This brings our total of pairing for entirety of the program to 121 pairings (242 people)!
Mentors and mentees alike rated the overall satisfaction with their experience as 4.56 out of 5 on average.
Hear what some of our mentorship participants are saying:
I had a positive experience with the Guild of Music Supervisors mentor program! The GMS-provided week-by-week guide made the program manageable and our meetings were substantive. My mentee Ana Sang, was a smart and engaged mentee and it was a very good match between mentor and mentee. We had a productive and enjoyable experience working together, and I have great confidence in Ana’s future success. I also really learned from Ana as well and I would recommend the program to others. I am confident that in the near future that Ana will be as successful as I know she will be and she will end up hiring me for jobs!
-Janet Rich, mentor
This was my first time as a mentor with the Guild of Music Supervisors, and it was truly a rewarding experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to teach my mentee about our field, and was very impressed by her thoughtful questions and the drive she has to succeed in this industry..
-Peter Davis, mentor

THE ETHICS OF MUSIC SUPERVISING PROJECTS THAT TELL DIVERSE STORIES
How should music supervisors navigate their responsibilities when working on diverse projects?
room 1058 — 5:00pm-6:00pm
I’m grateful that The Guild recognizes the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in this work and built a program to assist aspiring music supervisors of color. I genuinely appreciate this program, my mentor, and her willingness to be a resource to me beyond this program. The curriculum is fantastic - it’s genuinely like a music supervision course.
-Ayana Jones, mentee
My partnership with my mentor has been invaluable. While having a regular 9-5, on the side I’ve been very slowly working my way into freelance music supervision since 2014. I’ve taken formal classes, I’ve read/owned books, I’ve done an internship, I follow music sups on socials, you name it. My mentor has helped me make sense of how to apply the things I learned, in addition to teaching me new things. He’s extremely patient with me, never makes me feel like I’m asking a stupid question, is excited about my projects and happy for me and he genuinely wants to help me succeed. I’m very grateful for the pairing and I feel that we will remain in contact afterwards. This opportunity has truly been a blessing in my life and I can’t wait to see what happens for me next.

We warmly invite and encourage you to join us and become an active part of the GMS family. Though only qualified music supervisors and coordinators are able to join as full GMS Members, our community is inextricably interwoven with those working in the surrounding fields of publishing, labels, music creation, and other roles related to music and media. This latter group makes up our Friends of the Guild, an integral part of our community. The absolute best thing that we can offer as a guild is community support and a path toward relationships, and the absolute best way to experience these offerings is by jumping in and becoming involved. Join one of our many committees, attend and/or volunteer at our events, and get involved with one of our many initiatives. We are absolutely dependent upon the dedication and involvement of our Members and FOG in order to make positive change.
