What an incredible journey.
100 Years in Our Own Words
To the visionaries and pioneers who built Gallagher and all who have shared this incredible journey—this book honors your legacy. May the stories of our past continue to inspire us as we forge ahead into the future. Here’s to the next hundred years of humanity, innovation, and excellence.
PROLOGUE
In the summer of 1966, I walked into our little brokerage firm fresh out of grade school. I thought I was just there for a couple of weeks. Turns out, I was walking into my life’s work.

Arthur J. Gallagher | 1955
We were 23 people that year. A million dollars in revenue was still a goal we were chasing. But there was something in the air—traction, energy, belief. By the time I came on full-time in 1974, we’d hit $6 million. That felt big then. And it was. But none of us could’ve imagined what Gallagher would one day become.
Back in ’72, there were maybe four interns—myself, my cousins Bob Jr. and Kevin, and Jim Gault, who I’d end up working with for the next 50 years. This summer, 600 interns will join us around the world. That’s not just growth—it’s a reflection of how deeply we’ve invested in people. And that’s always been the heart of this business.
My grandfather started Gallagher in 1927. He’d been through the Great Depression and came out believing this was the best business on the planet. He didn’t give a lot of speeches, but on my first day, I asked him for advice. He looked at me and said, “Plan your work, and then work your plan.” That was it. Simple. Steady. True.
I had the gift of working 22 years alongside my dad and 32 with my uncle Bob. Even at the time, I knew how special that was. I’d tell myself: watch, listen, learn. They didn’t teach through lectures. It was more like a long walk together. You pick up lessons along the way.
One of the most important things we ever did was write down our values. The Gallagher Way wasn’t just words on a page. It was a cultural roadmap. We still live by it today. We reflect on it. We measure ourselves against it. That document means even more now than the day Bob wrote it.
Culture matters most when times are hard. We’ve been through a few: the Great Recession, the Spitzer investigations, the COVID-19 pandemic. But we got through all of it because we had something firm to stand on. We believed in each other. We believed in the work.
I remember setting up our first RIMS booth in the early days. We weren’t even in the top ten yet. People would walk by and say, “Yeah, you’re the church people,” because of our work with dioceses and the public sector. It didn’t bother me. Most of those firms aren’t around anymore. We’re still here.
We got here by focusing on where we could add real value. We built deep knowledge in verticals—construction, real estate, hospitality, cyber. When we line up talent behind an area, it grows. That’s why I can look a prospect in the eye and say, “We can do that.” I may not be the expert, but I’m one phone call away from someone who is.
When we went public in 1984, we had $64 million in revenue. People said we were too small. But we believed we were bigger than we looked. Bob believed in the power of markets to help us grow. My dad kept us grounded: “What are we selling today?” That balance—vision and execution—is still how we operate.
Today, we’re 70,000 people strong. But the family feeling hasn’t left us. I’ve had the joy of working with three of my sons. And I’m far from the only one. We’ve got dozens of families here. Most of the businesses we bring into the Gallagher family are family-run themselves. We get it. We like that. We say: bring them.
At 71, I’m still excited to come in every day. I’ve got no plans to stop. What keeps me going is the people. The work. The joy of it all. Sometimes I wonder what my dad and uncle would think if they saw us today. I know Bob would say, “I told you so. Now, when do we double it again?” And my dad? He’d be proud—especially of the way we’ve stayed true to our values while growing our niche capabilities.
We’re a hundred years in. And we’re just getting started.
— Pat Gallagher

CHAPTER 1
We.It’s a simple word that holds so much power. An affirmation of our unity. And at Gallagher, the spirit of “We” drives our company culture. We support one another. Believe in one another. And we show up for one another, uplifting each other and celebrating our differences that make us stronger. Because the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts.

A Culture of Mutual Support
The first class of interns has retired, leaving a legacy of success that continues to inspire all who follow. From Air Force serviceman to a service-oriented culture
“From day one at the internship, two things stood out about Gallagher. First, it was the culture, the way that everyone interacted with and paid attention to the interns. The way the whole organization embraced and invested in us. And I fell in love with that, I think first. And I also got to see a clear picture of the impact that we have as consultants. Advocating for our clients. Helping them drive their organizational growth every day through supporting their people. It’s been an awesome 15 years.”

A CULTURE OF LOYALTY
Trailblazer. Organizational Genius. Employee #1. The Mabel Pottinger Story
The world “trailblazer” gets thrown around, but few figures in Gallagher history exemplify it more than Mabel Pottinger. Hired by Art Gallagher as his first employee in the early days post-World War I, she began her tenure with the company by organizing the office. Mabel is recognized for creating Gallagher’s first filing system based on client renewal dates –a simple but effective method that reinforced the importance of renewals and retention as a company priority. And when Art got rheumatic fever, Mabel stepped up to help keep AJG Co. alive at a time when seeing women in corporate leadership was uncommon. At Gallagher, people are people – and Mabel remains one of our finest.

A CULTURE OF INCLUSION
One Action-Oriented Partnership.
Two Historic First s.
Season by season, kickoff by kickoff, we’re helping close the gender gap and create more coaching and high-performance opportunities at the elite level. As the Official Partner of Women’s Rugby, the WXV competition, and the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, we’re proud to support the growth of the women’s game. Gallagher is the first organization in the league to invest solely in the women’s side—and through the Gallagher High Performance Academy, that commitment has grown into the sport’s premier development and leadership program, particularly in coaching and high-performance roles.

CHAPTER 2
Yes We do that
We do that. Run to problems, not away from them. That’s the Gallagher mindset. The say-yes attitude and entrepreneurial spirit that sets us apart. But we can’t claim all the credit for the spirit of “Yes, we do that” that fuels our work and livens up our days. It’s inspired by our clients themselves. Every day, meeting their needs and getting ahead of their challenges drives us. Because where there’s a will to put clients first, there’s a way.

POWER OF DANCE

As Gallagher people in Chicagoland can tell you, the Joffrey for All Free Performance is one of our favorite events of the year. A day of picnic blankets, families, and world-class ballet in the (usually) beautiful Chicago-in-mid-June weather. We’re excited and proud to support The Joffrey Ballet and their mission of making dance accessible to anyone – and bringing joy and beauty to an entire community.

A HISTORY OF GALLAGHER FIRSTS
100 years of nonstop innovation?
Keeping pace with our clients’ needs?
Confidence in an ever-changing world?
Yes,
we do that. All of that.
The first large-deductible fire policy in Chicago— written for Bowman Dairy Co.
The first step toward self-insurance in the alternative risk market—through the Hartford Group Retrospective Rating Program.
The first to market self-insurance—serving Beatrice Foods and developing The Bishop’s Plan for the Archdiocese.
The first self-insurance pool for public entities— created for the Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency (IRMA).

GALLAGHER BASSETT
New beginnings and new frontiers: Gallagher Bassett and self-insurance.
The Rolling Stones debut in London. John Glenn orbits the Earth. Andy Warhol shows his soup cans in Los Angeles. And in Chicago, Beatrice Foods asks their trusted partner for something bold: help us self-insure.
Gallagher leans in. Partnering with Sterling Bassett, we create Gallagher Bassett—a first step into self-insurance and a new chapter in our story. Jack Campbell, who would become Gallagher Bassett’s first CEO, recalled the risk: “My wife said, ‘We’ve got two kids. What if this fails?’ It was basically a new venture … but I just liked what they were doing. It was new. It was fresh.”
What began as a client request grew into a thriving business, built on a simple principle: when doing right by the client requires something unprecedented, we make it possible.

Client success is our only scorecard.
We want to listen and dial in to how we can help best serve you. It’s very much about the client. What can we do for you? And when you look at where Gallagher has invested, whether it’s technology with Gallagher Drive, whether it’s our resources over in London, whether it’s the property practice, it’s all designed around helping you be successful? And there’s something very special about that.

NEXT TO YOU FOR EVERY KIND OF RISK

Insuring a Historic Movie Studio
As Only Gallagher Can.
When a client needed to insure a historic movie studio that had not been updated in way too long, they knew exactly who to call—Gallagher. The solution started the same way as always: with a conversation. A face-to-face chat that led to exactly what our client needed: a policy that set the business up for success. Or in our words, “Insure a nearly 100-year-old, wood framed, unsprinklered building? Let’s do it.”

NEXT TO YOU NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE

Also Known as the Beatrice Breakthrough.
Landing the Beatrice Foods account in 1957 was a turning point for Gallagher. It wasn’t just the largest client to date—it marked our first steps into the world of self-insurance. From there, Beatrice, Gallagher, and Gallagher Bassett grew side-by-side, always keeping it neighborly. When Beatrice opened a new office, so did we. Right down the street. It was the first of many lasting partnerships that shaped who we are today.

CHAPTER 4
Whenthe unthinkable happens. When tragedy strikes. When the best-laid plans don’t go to plan. And when shortterm crises call for long-term solutions. That’s when people need us most. And for the past 100 years, that’s when our people have been at their best. Because we’ve never forgotten that ours is a noble profession, built on resilience and recovery. The answers are rarely quick and easy. But the work is always worth it.

Going the extra mile in extraordinary times.
Natural disasters leave more than one kind of devastation in their wake.
There’s the physical wreckage. And there’s the deeper challenge of lives that need rebuilding, communities that call for healing, and voices that just need someone willing to not only listen but also act. We’ve seen humanity at its most vulnerable in those moments, and we know when the moment calls for more than processing the claim and paying the premium.
When Hurricane Maria struck Dominica in 2017, Gallagher colleagues who called the island home were there first — helping their neighbors, friends, and clients, often one and the same. Soon after, teammates from across the world arrived to stand alongside them, offering support where it was needed most.
After Hurricane Katrina, we were on the ground helping rebuild the city of New Orleans. And after wildfires reduced whole Southern California cities to ashes, we were the morning after to start the work of mending lives and putting roofs over heads. It’s times of need that bring out the best in our people – and show our industry its true purpose.

Out of tragedy, strength:
Our Lady of Angels and the Bishops Plan
December 1, 1968 – A massive fire tears through Our Lady of the Angels School in downtown Chicago. Then came news of the devastating death toll: three nuns, and 92 children between 8 and 14 years old. As an entire nation mourns, the archdiocese finds itself severely underinsured and facing staggering losses of $3 million. Our people knew we had work to do: help a community put the pieces back together and ensure that nothing like this could ever happen again. What followed became known as the Bishops Plan: an all-lines protected self-insurance plan, what has been referred to as a new model of “mutual insurance.” It was more than the right coverage at the right time. It was a response to people who were hurting. A means of giving families the support they needed at their lowest moment. The Bishops Plan catapulted Gallagher to national prominence. But what mattered most wasn’t simply settling a claim. The lasting legacy of the Bishops Plan was its mark on Gallagher’s moral fabric—reminding us of our place in the world. It showed us the life-saving power of spotting risks early, and forever changed how we do it, so tragedies like this never happen again. Anywhere. Putting people first in times of crisis isn’t always the easiest thing to do. But as our history reminds us, it’s just what we do.

Gallagher Partnership Intern Program: Reimagining transferrable skills

An international soccer player suffers a career-ending injury at just 19 years old. With no college degree, few career prospects and a family to support, he finds a unique opportunity. A program designed to help former athletes transition into the insurance business. To adapt their leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills from field and court to board room and client call. The risk of injury puts so many athletes just “one tackle away” from the end of their dreams.
That’s why the Gallagher Partnership Intern Program was created: to provide a second chance and a stable new chapter. We’re proud of the many Gallagher team members who have joined our family through the program. Including one promising former soccer star achieving remarkable things as a producer on our global brokerage team.

CHAPTER 5
Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life
We’d like to suggest a follow-up: “Choose an industry you love, and all of your days will be filled with purpose.” There’s no industry in the world quite like insurance. A global business that touches every community in every region, everywhere. That speaks every language. That connects every other type of business. That produces lasting partnerships and personal friendships. It’s incredibly meaningful to get to do what we do. It’s pretty awesome, too.
Confidence meets opportunity
Gallagher Connect Partners
One of the many perks of our line work is the opportunity to work both with and for people from all backgrounds. And the more our industry represents the communities we serve, the better for all of us. That’s why we created Gallagher Connect Partners: a network built to foster relationships with minority-owned, women-owned, veteranowned and other diverse-certified insurance firms. Giving our shared clients access to local and diverse expertise, while creating opportunities for our partners and uplifting their communities. Because inclusion isn’t just good for business. It’s just plain good.

THE BUSINESS OF CARING
A business with a heart
We’re not just in the insurance and risk management business. Some days, we’re in the birthday party RSVP business. The bar mitzvah toast business. The “cha-cha slide at a client’s wedding” business. Because our work has never been only about policies and paperwork—it’s about people. First and foremost, we’re in the business of caring about the lives of those we work with, and those we serve.
FROM LOWERING COSTS TO GROWING FAMILIES
The power partnershipof
Every day, we’re reminded of the transformative power of what we do—and the very real ways our work can change lives. When we invested in technology and data analytics , we knew it would help clients make better decisions with sharper insights. What we didn’t know was that it would generate more than $425 million in cost savings for one longtime client. Even more meaningful, that client reinvested much of those savings into their people—adding a fertility benefit to support employees struggling to start a family. This business can be life changing. Sometimes, quite literally.

Earning a place in the most esteemed insurance center in the world.
It’s a name that embodies respect and credibility. Lloyd’s of London is more than an insurance marketplace. With a history dating back to 1680, it’s the most integral institution in all of global insurance. And in 1981, Gallagher made history, with our self-insurance arm Gallagher, Hinton & Vereker becoming the first subsidiary of a U.S. broker to be listed at Lloyd’s. It’s amazing what can happen when you invest in becoming part of something greater than yourself.

A former intern finds the power to make his marks
“
Something I think about almost every day is
how do I leave a mark? How do I make this work better when I leave it? And I think Gallagher has given me a great opportunity to do that in just so many ways. If you have a great idea here, our leaders are willing to listen. They’re willing to put resources and investment behind it to ensure it’s successful for Gallagher.”
–Former intern

A morning phone call on Christmas Day. Fear and stress in a client’s voice. And one word: “Fire.” In that moment, the team knew exactly what to do. And they didn’t waste a moment. “I need my property claim advocate. We need to get this reported. Let’s get to the carrier. And suddenly everyone was game on, together with the client, to be there at that moment.” One moment was all it took. Because “that’s the moment they need you.”
