I don’t know about any of you reading this magazine, but I listen to music constantly! And depending on my mood or the occasion, the style of music changes—one day I’ll listen to nothing but ’80s hits, the next it’s only The Rolling Stones, or Pink Floyd, or Johnny Cash.
Depending on your mood or the occasion, there’s a style of live music in Las Vegas this week, and we’ve got it all lined up in this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine :
• Classic rock fans have their choice of either rocker Rod Stewart, who is approaching his 200th show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“He Wears It Well,” p. 17 ), or jam band Dead & Company, currently enjoying a popular residency at Sphere. • Country music lovers can enjoy a one-nightonly performance by Brett Young at Resorts World Theatre (“Comfort Country,” p. 34).
• Fans of Mexican pop music will want to check out Los Temerarios, currently on its farewell tour, at Mandalay Bay (“Final Bow,” p. 40).
• Pop music fans won’t want to miss one of the hottest tickets in town this week: Christina Aguilera, continuing her residency at Voltaire at The Venetian (“Charming Chanteuse,” p. 18).

Good Rotations
You’ve got plenty of sights to see from the party pods at this longtime Strip attraction
Over the last 10 years, the landscape of Las Vegas has changed dramatically, and no one knows that more than riders of High Roller, a 550-foot-tall observation wheel that offers 30-minute rotations, during which time the entire landscape can be seen.
And what a changing landscape it has been! In the 10 years that High Roller has thrilled its visitors, Resorts World Las Vegas was built, the Fontainbleau Las Vegas was completed, Sphere was added and the Vegas Raiders stadium and T-Mobile Arena were constructed. It’s a perfect reason why High Roller remains a must-visit experience, even if you’ve been before—you never know what you’ll see this time.
And it’s not all about the sights you see while taking a pod; there are so many ways to make High Roller an integral part of your Las Vegas experience. First and foremost is the Happy Half Hour, where you and a group of adults can enjoy a pod with a stocked bar for 30 minutes from noon to 11:30 p.m. If you’re here for your nuptials, good news! You can reserve a wedding, complete with flowers and music, which will end with you kissing the bride or groom as the cabin finishes its rotation. And gender reveal parties for the parents-to-be? Yep, High Roller has you covered on that as well, with a gender reveal light show that lights up the High Roller’s 2,000 LED lights in your baby’s color for 15 minutes. This package also comes complete with a signature “Mommy Mocktail” from Sky Lounge Bar.
If you’re attending with your entire family, High Roller can become a wonderland of discovery, not just about the various sights you will see, but the attraction itself. Get on your phone and download information about High Roller. For instance, did you know each cabin weighs 44,000 pounds and has a diameter of 23 feet? Or that the entire wheel weighs more than three-and-a-half tons? –Ken Miller The Linq Promenade. 855.234.7469. caesars.com

Seared and Sliced
Enjoy top-quality
dishes
and inviting ambience
There’s a sweet spot few restaurants reach in Las Vegas—ones that do massive business not only with tourists but with locals as well. Twin Creeks Steakhouse is one such restaurant, one that succeeds by keeping its recipe simple: Great ambience, great service, and great food, courtesy of chef Jaimee Pepe.
The warm, welcoming décor here is best enjoyed by starting with a classic opener like wagyu carpaccio and jumbo lump crab cake before diving into a variety of entree options.
Main courses range from meat-lover specials like a 40-ounce Creekstone Farms tomahawk for two, pictured (this absolutely has to be paired with the brandy peppercorn sauce), to slow-roasted prime rib and 21-day aged filet mignon. For seafood fans, there’s a terrific scallops dish, served with apple purée, fennel, orange and parsnip chips, and fans of Italian will want to order the mushroom Bolognese, featuring cavatappi pasta, arugula and ricotta salata.
For a cool change of pace, check out Twin Creeks’ wagyu menu, featuring a tender 10-ounce ribeye cap; a 10-ounce burger with bone marrow-braised French onions and served with duck fat smashed potatoes; and a 12-ounce Spencer steak.
The cocktails here are exactly as you’d expect, with Old-Fashioneds, margaritas and Kentucky mules all ready to get your tastebuds prepped. For something a bit different, try the Smokin’ Sazerac, featuring High West Campfire whiskey and Pernod, or the Twin Creeks Sangria, combining Smooth Ambler bourbon and house-made red wine sangria.
Dessert options range from a Brooklyn Blackout Cake and warm cinnamon roll bread pudding to smoked banana s’mores and Junior’s Cheesecake. And in one of the coolest promotions in town, try the Stakes Are High tableside cart (available when you order the tomahawk), where you roll three dice; depending on the outcome, you’ll get anything from a free dessert to a free tomahawk. Good luck! –Ken Miller Silverton Casino Lodge,

Legendary rocker approaches 200th show of successful Strip residency
Sir Rod Stewart has long been one of The Colosseum’s most beloved performers, since debuting his Strip residency in 2011. When his current run concludes on Aug. 7, he’ll have performed his 200th show there!
It’s an amazing achievement, to be sure, but Stewart has filled his entire career with milestone after milestone: He’s a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both here (he was actually inducted twice!) and in the U.K.; he received a knighthood in 2016; he’s sold more than 120 million records worldwide; and he’s changed musical styles more than once, but always to critical and commercial acclaim.
In fact, part of the fun of attending a Rod Stewart performance these days is trying to predict what songs are coming next: His ’70’s and ’80s classics like “Maggie May,” “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Young Turks,” or his now-vast selection of later-career hits from the ’90s and beyond like “What a Wonderful World,” “All For Love” and “For the First Time.”
Sir Rod has certainly earned the right to perform whatever he darned well wants, and with a recent U.K. chart-topping album, Swing Fever, it would appear his already vast catalog will only continue to grow—as will the milestones. –Ken Miller

Charming Chanteuse
Appreciate this icon’s music, dance and fashion at an intimate venue
How could you not love at least one thing Christina Aguilera has put out? She’s been on screens since her childhood role on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, rose to superstardom after the release of her self-titled debut album and hasn’t slowed down since. You’ve had the chance to love her on the big screen with her starring role in the 2010 film Burlesque and on the small screen with her weekly appearances as a coach on six seasons of NBC’s The Voice.
So it’s safe to say that Xtina can be regarded as no less than pop-culture royalty. And as the benevolent queen she is, Aguilera once again gifts her fans with an intimate residency at Voltaire, which picks up this week with shows Aug. 2-3.
This is not Aguilera’s first dip into the Vegas residency pond, though; she launched The Xperience at Planet Hollywood’s then-Zappos Theater (now Bakkt Theater) in May 2019. But with her previous venue having a 7,000-person capacity, this show, in a 1,000-seat setting, offers an entirely new experience. You’ll hear many of the pop icon’s hits like “Dirrty” and “Genie in a Bottle,” as well as some of her well-known ballads like “Beautiful” and even a sultry cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.”
Almost as stunning as Aguilera’s vocals and personality, the wardrobe for this production is chic, dynamic and fashionable. From sexy body suits to flowing gowns and capes, you’ll be delighted by each quick change. And it’s a perfect venue to display them in, as Voltaire’s main stage features a long central runway surrounded by swiveling seats, ensuring audience members won’t strain necks and won’t miss a second of the performance. That intimate setting, coupled with caviar service and handcrafted specialty cocktails, means a ticket to this show guarantees a luxurious experience with your favorite songstress. –Em Jurbala

Get Your Mind Boggled
Magic duo continues to wow audiences decades into its run
It takes some serious talent to be one of the longest-running headliners in Vegas history, but Penn & Teller leave no room for doubt in that department. The duo is almost synonymous with Sin City, and the Vegas show will have you thinking, “How did they even do that?” long before the curtain closes.
Of course, a magic show is no fun if someone spoils all the tricks beforehand, and with this duo, that would be hard to do anyway. Penn and Teller constantly revise their show. They add new illusions
and change things up, ensuring that if you’ve seen them prior, you still have good reason to go back. That being said, here are a few hints of what you might see—or maybe not; they’re unpredictable, and that’s what’s great about these two:
• A tongue-in-cheek take on the classic “donut on a string” trick that will not only leave you laughing but remind you that even the profs are not in the business of taking themselves too seriously.
• A feat of memorization that requires a ridiculous amount of playing card decks,
a few volunteers and Penn’s incredible recollection of those decks.
• A mind-boggling moment with a couple of rings that will leave you believing teleportation must certainly be real. You’ll genuinely find yourself in disbelief.
• A disappearing animal that will do nothing short of mystifying you. Seriously, you’ll be trying to figure out where it went for months. –Em Jurbala
The Wildest Vistas
Experience a natural wonder in a whole new way
When it comes to an unusual Southwestern experience, it’s hard to get much bigger than the Grand Canyon. And for an even more unusual Grand Canyon experience, head to Grand Canyon West for a day trip from Vegas—where the Skywalk provides an incredible vista of the natural wonder.
The Skywalk itself is a gigantic, semicircular glass bridge that is cantilevered over the canyon, providing amazing views not only looking out over the Grand Canyon but down as well, creating an exhilarating few minutes until you head back onto solid ground.
But that’s not all you’ll find at Grand Canyon West. You’ll also find several separate areas with different things to do in each one. A must-visit is Skywalk in Eagle Point, where you’ll also be able to check out the Native American Village, where authentic housing, sweat lodges and ovens can be explored. There are also indigenous performances on select nights.
Grand Canyon West is owned by the Hualapai tribe, and you will find information on the tribe inside the Skywalk main terminal. Plus, you’ll find food and drink spots throughout.
If you want a little extra during your visit, consider white water rafting on the Colorado River, desert ziplining and helicopter rides over the canyon. –Nina King

Bar and lounge celebrates Italian culture and flavors
Stellar cocktails in a swank and welcoming space is what you’ll find at Sala 118 at The Venetian.
“Really, if I ask, ‘What is Sala 118?’ —it’s a place that feels like home. A
beautiful, gorgeous home,” said Andrew Pollard, director of mixology for The Venetian. “The mood, the environment, it’s to provide a sense of comfort. The environment that we want to create is
to amplify the DNA of this property and the character. It’s an elevated experience that is indicative of our DNA; that mid-century Italian setting in a modern Venetian landscape.”
The vibe and design have an understated elegance, with gorgeous flourishes throughout like the lighting, seating and bar area. The real star of Sala 118 is the cocktail menu, created over a two-month period by Pollard, a longtime and well-respected Las Vegas mixologist whose cocktail creations reside on menus up and down the Strip. His goal for Sala 118 was to take classic, familiar cocktails and present them in a unique and innovative way by using Italian ingredients. “I’ve always had a passion for Italian cocktails, and I’ve always looked for a home to have the opportunity to do this,” Pollard said. “I want our guests to explore, take a journey through Italy, and they’re guided through our menu and guided by our knowing bar staff as well.”
And no other cocktail is more indicative of the Italian culture than the Negroni. Sala 118 offers six riffs on the classic recipe, using different spirits and ingredients that allow drinkers to experience the Negroni in a whole new way. “The Paradise Negroni, which is almost as if a piña colada and a Negroni made a baby, is a very fun, exciting and unique cocktail,” Pollard said. The
Tips/Insider Knowledge
The word “sala” in Italian means “room” or “living room,” and the number 118 represents all the islands around Venice that are linked by bridges and canals.
A must-try is the limoncello, says Pollard. “Our limoncello is the greatest you’re ever gonna try,” he says. “It’s sourced from a small boutique vendor. It’s life-changing limoncello!” Look for the lion head with a spigot behind the bar. The secret: It dispenses a signature Negroni with signature vermouth and signature bitters.

recipe calls for Porter’s Tropical Old Tom gin, Heirloom pineapple amaro, Luxardo bitter bianco, coconut, Lustau Manzanilla Papirusa sherry and lime bitters.
Not often would one find the margarita on the menu of Italian bars, but sticking with the Sala 118 philosophy, it has taken a classic that is familiar to everyone and given it a unique twist. And this writer has to say: Out of all the margaritas sampled across the city, this is one of the best versions I’ve ever tasted! The Sala 118 Margherita blends Gajàrdo Arancia Radicale liqueur, Alpe Genepy Herbetet, prickly pear, lime and fresh oregano, and the spirit is the property’s very own select barrel of tequila, The Venetian Select Paladar reposado tequila. “We designed (the tequila) inside and out,” Pollard said. “This is not like any margarita you’ve tasted, yet it’s familiar.”
Another exclusive spirit from The Venetian is its own barrel-aged Svöl Aquavit. “We have the only barrel in the country that exists,” Pollard said. “The exclusive, three-year-aged, finished barrel of Swedish-style Aquavit has fresh dill, mint, and is bright, complex
and fresh—it adds a lot of layer and dimension to the cocktail.” And the perfect cocktail to experience it in is Sala 118’s version of the Bloody Mary: the Bitter Mary. The Aquavit is mixed with St. George Green Chile vodka,
“The harmony of the menu can speak to just about anyone.”

Besides the impressive specialty cocktails, Sala 118 offers a nice selection of Italian wines and Italian liqueurs and beers. “It’s the environment, it’s the feel, it’s the look, it’s the tastes,” Pollard said. “And that authenticity all translates to the overall message of Sala 188 which is ‘it feels like home.’” –Kiko Miyasato The Venetian, 702.414.1000

Inside the gorgeous dining room, you’ll enjoy such stupendous appetizers as the Mediterranean meze. This dish includes three dips—chickpea hummus, tzatziki and red pepper-feta hummus—presented with freshly baked pita, with the bread pu ed up like a balloon. Other delicious new items are the tomatoes Mykonos, a simply prepared dish of huge sliced tomatoes, olives, capers, feta, cucumber and red onion, which is sure to become a favorite at the table. Tomahawk cart
The black tru e fettuccine, a signature dish, gives vegetarians a wonderful option. French butter, Parmigiano Reggiano and cracked pepper combine with very fragrant black truffle to form a sublime pasta presentation. Although white sauces aren’t
known for being good for leftovers, it’s tempting to try. I’d recommend eating the max amount possible in the restaurant, however.
Possibly the most showstopping of the dishes is the tableside wagyu tomahawk presentation, where a cart with a 48-ounce Mishima Reserve rolls up, and Woodford Reserve Baccarat bourbon (90.4 proof) creates a magnificent flaming spectacle. The beef is served with fondant potatoes and spring onions. If you order the tomahawk in advance, you can get it custom-stamped for an even more over-the-top experience. Other mains to consider include lemon-oregano chicken and double-cut lamb chops, as well as an impressive salt-baked branzino. Round them out with sides like the vegetable couscous.
Dessert is one of those items that some pass up without even pausing, but here in Vegas, it’s worth the splurge. At Cathédrale, the Sorrento lemon is another signature, and it’s amazing! It looks exactly like a real lemon, down to the dimpled skin, but it is actually almond cake with yuzu granita. The new baklava Napoleon layers crispy pastry, candied walnuts, and cinnamon diplomat cream, drizzled with thyme honey. Oh, my!

The way this attraction has been designed pretty much ensures every visitor will walk away having learned something new. One of the first experiences here puts explorers right in the shoes of Howard Carter, the archaeologist who struck gold in the Valley of Kings when he uncovered the tomb of Tutankhamen. Peer through slots in a faux stone wall to see a bit of what Howard saw as excavators worked to remove the walls that sealed this time capsule for thousands of years, or simply enjoy the educational material and transportive ambience in the space.
More discoveries await around each corner. One room contains a life-sized re-creation of the multilevel sarcophagus that protected King Tut’s mummified remains, while others display everyday objects and spiritual idols that the king would have been buried with for various purposes. Virtual displays outline the mummification process and the quality of life King Tut experienced. There are even tidbits about other prominent ancient Egyptians like Queen Nefertiti.
Spoiler incoming! The Ancient Egyptians believed in a journey
• Known as the Boy King, King Tut started his reign at just 8 years old.
• The Nile, the life force of Ancient Egyptian civilization, is the longest river in the world.
• Ancient Egyptians often mummified their beloved pets and buried them with their owners.
to the afterlife, which is why they laid royalty to rest with so many of their earthly possessions. People would be buried with items that the living thought would help guide and protect them in death, including food, wine and a Book of the Dead, a collection of spells to assist the deceased on their trip. What that means for the curious minds of today, though, is that through looking at these items
you can get a fairly well-rounded sense of what was truly important to someone living in these times. So why not take some time out of your trip to learn something new and ponder life before the civilization we know today? It’s fascinating!

Love song grupero Los Temerarios hit the road one last time
Los Temerarios have been delivering the music of romance both live and recorded for nearly a half-century, but the brothers at the core of “The Daredevils” are splitting up after the current Hasta Siempre Tour. Adolfo and Gustavo Angel kicked off their final run of concerts on Valentine’s Day with the first of five dates at Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City and will satiate audiences in Las Vegas with Saturday and Sunday shows before moving on to the next phases of their careers.
It is a historical turn of events for Mexican pop music as well as the Angel brothers. Now a duo, Los Temerarios emerged in the ’80s as one of the leading grupero hitmakers along with Michoacán’s Los Bukis and Nuevo León’s Bronco. Adolfo and Gustavo hail from the central-north state of Zacatecas.

Adolfo, older than Gustavo by five years, would plot the course and find opportunities to play keyboards until he received a red Yamaha of his own. From there, his fate was sealed, as was Gustavo’s as a guitarist and singer. The two formed Conjunto La Brisa, which became Los Temerarios in 1983, with their cousin Fernando Angel on bass, and began recording with Javier Alba on bass and lead singer Samuel Guzman.
Bassist Carlo Vidal and Carlos Abrego would be on board for Los Temerarios’ rise to the heights of fame as Adolfo guided the band’s career and shaped its music. Comfortable as the wizard behind a see-through curtain, his keyboard playing increasingly characterized the sound of Los Temerarios and influenced other grupos. The sound was electric, including the drum kits, and Adolfo made innovative arrangements at points along the way, including the adaptation of ranchero elements.
It’s Gustavo who sings lead now, although Adolfo famously stepped forward on “Sé Que Te Amo” from 2002 No. 1 album Una Lágrima No Basta. Vidal and Abrego were gone by that time, and Fernando would leave Los Temerarios after a final concert in the Angels’ hometown. From then on, it was primarily a brothers act augmented by live musicians onstage and studio musicians on record.
Adolfo increasingly needed less help in the studio and practically became deified for his composition skills. It can be said for a number of Mexican pop acts, Los Temerarios’ music provided soundtracks for life and love, but for millions of fans, the band’s relaxing music is the sound of romance. One can do no wrong playing 1994’s Camino del Amor during an intimate dinner, or 1992’s Mi Vida Eres Tú during an anniversary celebration.
Los Temerarios has had eight No. 1 albums, 17 top 10 hits and four No. 1s on Billboard ’s Latin charts. A new album after the tour has been promised, but after the final two concerts at L.A.’s BMO Stadium in December, the final chapter in the story of Los Temerarios will come to a close. For fans who grew up with their music, it is the end of an era.

Mickey Hart shares his thoughts on his art, music and life
At the apotheosis of his career, Mickey Hart is all about the art—read: his music for the Grateful Dead and his artwork. Both collide in Las Vegas as Hart and Dead & Company take up residence inside Sphere for a series of shows. This week, catch them, Aug. 1-3, as well as Hart’s art exhibition, Art at the Edge of Magic, which is displayed inside the Dead Forever Experience at The Venetian. In an interview with Las Vegas Magazine, Hart talks about about his two creative outlets—and what’d he’d say if he ran into a couple of wizards.
Hardly at all, very rarely. I find a paintbrush limiting.
working musician. But (the art) the painting is another expression. I’m a creation junkie. I must create or I won’t have a good day. But yeah, I’m flattered and humbled.
My thing is flow. And so is music. I’m an artist and artists create, whether it’s on canvas, plexiglass or onstage at a Dead & Company show. The need to create is great in me. That’s where these images come from—they’re really music to me, it’s all music. It’s all music—it’s just in the visual domain.
Drum, of course; I was born to drum. I just paint because I paint. But I was born to drum.
I live in the vibratory world, as you would’ve already guessed, of sound. Life is vibration. I use vibration in my work. I vibrate things into being, into existence. Mine is a multicolored world. My process is (I put the paint colors) on a subwoofer and that vibrates the painting itself, and that allows these images to emerge, be born. I guess somebody called that vibrational expressionism (laughs), and I thought, “Wow, yeah, OK.”
My art is on the exosphere of the Sphere, the skin of the Sphere, and then my art is inside the Experience at The Venetian. It’s a humbling experience, to be honest. I only paint for myself. It was just a hobby and a lot of people ended up liking it, and they wanted to purchase it. One thing led to another. I drum, I play drums in a band. I’m a
Well, a wizard has appeared to me from time to time, and I ask that wizard, “Oh, great wizard! What shall I ask of you today?” And the wizard says, “Ask me three wishes, anything you want my son, and I grant them!” I would like to live longer—maybe another 100 years. Then make me healthy and happy and productive and engaged in life, have a great family, like I have right now, but just give me another 100 years of it. I wouldn’t ask for more money or anything else. I don’t have No. 2 or 3 because they’re all rolled into the same thing— health, long life, great family, happiness. And then the wizard says, “Oh, all right, I’ll think about it.”
