From the Editor What happens here ...

As countries across the globe combat the spread of COVID-19 (some successfully, some not), Las Vegas faces plenty of challenges of its own. When Nevada made the decision to reopen its businesses (including the casino you’re currently staying in) in June, it faced the uncertainty of how best to keep people safe.

Over the last few months, that has changed dramatically. It started with things like limiting room availability, implementing contactless check-in on your phone, placing demarcations on the floor to promote social distancing, and installing hand sanitizer stations.

As the weeks went by, Las Vegas casinos began to notice that many patrons were not social distancing or wearing masks, even though both were strongly encouraged. As the COVID-19 numbers began to rise for Nevada, action became necessary, and our Governor, Steve Sisolak, enforced a mandatory mask policy for everyone, including casinos (except when you are eating or drinking). Mask stations began popping up, and the number of cases were closely monitored to see if they declined.

Fast-forward a few more weeks to the deadline cycle for this digital edition of Las Vegas Magazine. A day before submitting our pages for publication, Sisolak held another press conference, this one with a

decidedly more direct approach: In addition to a mandatory mask policy, Sisolak ordered all bars shut—again. Needless to say, this prompted much last-minute scrambling at Las Vegas Magazine to make sure that policy was reflected in our pages. It goes without saying that bars are a massive part of Las Vegas’ appeal, and as such they usually take up a sizable amount of real estate in our publication.

But I want to stress that these actions are a good thing. Nothing is happening in a vacuum on the Strip; our leadership is monitoring our situation and acting appropriately. But this should also serve as a reminder that the uncertainty of our current situation requires all of us to be on our guard at all times.

To help you with that, Las Vegas Magazine has included a Safety Guide that takes you through the various safety measures on the Strip. Starting on page 35, you’ll find tips for keeping safe in the lobby, elevators, escalators, and throughout the rest of your stay.

There is only so much your individual casino can do to protect you; you must be diligent and aware of your surroundings and your health. I’ll put it another way: What happens here no longer stays here.

Let’s continue to have some fun, but never forget that our actions have consequences.

A Pop-Up of Flavors Craving some good ol’ Italian cuisine? Enter celebrated chef Marc Vetri. While his eponymous restaurant Vetri Cucina at Palms is currently closed, the chef brings his team to the kitchen of Terra Rossa at Red Rock Casino for a restaurant takeover. The new pop-up, Osteria Fiorella, features Vetri’s eclectic menu of Northern Italian dishes inspired by his Italian-American upbringing in South Philly.

Choose from an assortment of antipasti and salads, pizzas baked in a wood-burning oven, pastas, main courses, desserts, wines and cocktails. The pasta is made fresh daily and includes dishes like rigatoni with Fiorella sausage ragu and the decadent ricotta gnocchi with brown butter and crispy leeks.

There’s Sal’s famous meatballs (pictured), served with bruschetta and ricotta; Vetri’s notable veal chop Milanese; and a traditional whole grilled branzino. Oscar Lopez

Success suits him well From college intern to running a steakhouse in just a few short years, Oscar Lopez, general manager at the Charcoal Room at Palace Station, is proof that hard work pays off.

When Lopez was born, his parents left Havana, Cuba, to come to America to make a better life for themselves. They landed in Miami but ended up settling in Las Vegas. Lopez’s parents have been working on the Las Vegas Strip for more than 25 years. “They’ve been working since the day they got here to give me a better life,” Lopez says. Growing up and seeing his parents work in the industry, he says, “I don’t think it’s a mistake I ended up here.”

Just how did Lopez end up running a steakhouse? In his senior year at UNLV, he was a part of a dozen students chosen to participate in Station Casinos’ very first internship program.

He started out as a resort operations intern at Green Valley Ranch, one of Station’s local properties. “I learned every aspect of running a

property,” he says. Lopez was also a part of the team that launched the popular holiday event Winter’s Village, and he spent one summer running the pool. The internship helped Lopez figure out that he wanted to work on the food and beverage side of hotel operations—and

by December of last year, he was offered the position at Charcoal Room.

“What I like most about (this job) is that me and the chef work together,” Lopez says. “He rocks it in the kitchen. Really I’m as much a fan as I am the manager here, so the chef doing all these amazing creations with the food allows me the privilege to be able to share that with the guests.”

As Lopez continues on his path to success, he attributes part of that to his parents. “For them to put in all that hard work and all that risk for me so that we could have a better life—I cannot throw it away in any way, shape or form.” –Kiko Miyasato

Along with designer Nick Alain, the Vanderpumps have created a space that blends together a whimsical elegance and relaxed sophistication. While the lounge is indoors, guests will feel as if they’ve stepped into an outdoor

secret garden with lush foliage, twinkling lights, candlelit tables, cozy nooks and large palms.

Light bites here are divine and there are plenty of them. Let’s start with dessert first, because the Vanderpump Rosé Cake for Two is one of the most delicious desserts you’ll ever indulge in— rosé-infused sponge cake with a pink frosting made of strawberry buttercream. Savory highlights include the truffle potato puffs with white truffle oil, goat cheese balls with a Belgian endive salad and the chicken sliders with grilled mini peppers, arugula and Calabrian chili lime aioli.

If the mob era and old-school Vegas vibe piques your interest, a must-visit is the Golden Steer Steakhouse (702.384.4470), founded in 1958. Dine on some of the best steaks in town while seated in vintage booths once occupied by famous people that include the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, Natalie Wood and Nat King Cole..

For more Vegas history, head downtown to the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino (702.385.1906). While the property, which was first erected in its location in 1906, has been revamped and revitalized, you can browse through artifacts from its early days.

In the hotel’s lobby, you can check out memorabilia that includes gaming ledgers, guest books, Prohibition-era liquor bottles and even Vegas’ first telephone.

While downtown, head to the famous Atomic Liquors (702.982.3000)—the oldest free-standing bar in the city. It was the first spot where beer, wine and mixed drinks were served over the counter, thus creating the “Tavern Sale License” of which Atomic was issued the first ever: #00001. Time to let off steam? There’s no better place for that than Adventuredome, Circus Circus’ indoor amusement park. Rock, spin, soar and speed with roller coasters and exciting rides, head to the midway for games galore or take the kids to a 4D show—all under the pink glow of Adventuredome’s rose-hued canopy.

With its seasonally changing botanical exhibits, the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens at Bellagio is a never-ending wonder. This summer, its theme is Japan Journey: Magic of Kansai, and visitors are treated to a host of displays that honor the Kansai region of Japan. Inside the atrium, you’ll see a threestory pagoda, a depiction of Nachi Falls, an enormous walk-through dragon’s mouth, huge butterflies fluttering overhead and a giant Hello Kitty statue that’s the cutest ever.

Get a real rush as you are whisked through New York-New York on the Big Apple Coaster. After a 180-foot climb and a 76-foot drop, travel around the exterior and through the interior of the resort at up to 67 mph, twisting, dropping another 144 feet, going through a 180-degree spiral and a half-loop maneuver.

Whoo-hoo! You must be 54 inches to ride the coaster, but if you aren’t, head down to the arcade, where there’s plenty to do at any height.

The dynamic Mexican restaurant Diablo’s at Luxor is especially well-known for its nachos, a piled-high mound with chorizo, pinto beans and a jalapeño cheese sauce.

But ordering Diablo’s fish tacos (grilled or battered) or vixen chicken will satisfy you equally. And, of course, a tasty margarita makes the perfect accompaniment.

Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse opened his upscale seafood restaurant, Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House, in MGM Grand 25 years ago, expanding to Las Vegas from New Orleans, and today the venue keeps Lagasse’s Creole cuisine as vibrant as when it was first served. Find goodies like broiled oysters, a seafood boil and Emeril’s barbecued shrimp, served with a rosemary biscuit. Like the food, the cocktails kick it up a notch—try the Fish House bourbon smash for a Mint Julep with some “Bam!” thrown in.

Get the experience of drifting through the canals in Venice when you take a ride in the gondolas at The Venetian. Although it’s cool for the kids, it’s also perfect for adults.

Not only are the visuals sweet, you’ll hear gondoliers serenading you during the ride down the man-made canals throughout the Grand Canal Shoppes, making the ride just that much more interesting. It’s been named one of the most romantic things to do in Vegas, and we’re sure your sweetheart will agree. Ah, mi amore.

Light it up! In downtown Las Vegas, Fremont Street Experience features the behemoth overhead attraction known as Viva Vision. The light and music show was upgraded earlier this year, and now features 16.4 million pixels. Numerous videos, with music by artists from Imagine Dragons to Linkin Park, play up to eight times a night, starting at 6 p.m., on what is the largest video screen in the world. Visitors can also head to SlotZilla to try out the zipline that swooshes people from one end to the other, either sitting, or superhero-style. Height, weight and age restrictions apply.

If you love the Ferris wheels at county fairs, check out the High Roller. This huge observation wheel (the biggest in the world at 550 feet) makes exactly one rotation every half hour, transporting you high over the Linq Promenade. To enter, just step on to the moving pod, and then take in some of the most spectacular views of the Vegas Valley, including the Strip and mountains.

Snap photos to your heart’s content, and try riding it both at night and during the day.

Vegas has returned, and so have its pools. For some serious fun, check out Influence, The Pool at The Linq, a 21-and-over dayclub with many amenities to choose from, including cabanas, a separate above-ground pool (called the Shark Tank), daybeds surrounding both pools, and loungers around the other three (6 feet apart, naturally). Get refreshed at the large bar area!

Take your Mexican food experience up a notch—or two—at Javier’s at Aria. In addition to a collection of high-end tequilas, Javier’s boasts a huge menu, using only sustainable seafood and the highest grade of Prime Angus beef.

While looking at the Fountains of Bellagio through floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoy Serrano’s novel take on Italian food: small plates. It’s a worldwide brand, but nowhere is Nobu more memorable than Caesars Palace. For starters, it’s the only Nobu in the U.S. offering teppan tables. From cold dishes like yellowtail jalapeño to hot dishes like black cod butter lettuce, everything is world class.

Who doesn’t love Hershey’s Kisses? At Hershey’s Chocolate World at New York-New York, you can find all sorts of different flavors of one of the world’s most beloved candies, along with many other Hershey’s products.

You may be unaware, but for decades Las Vegas has been perfecting the art of oysters. And you can find amazing options at a variety of venues around the Strip and the valley. Start with The Oyster Bar at a variety of Station Casinos, including Santa Fe, Sunset and Palace Station (expect a long wait at the latter, arguably the best place in town for the mollusk), and continue your journey at The Oyster Bar at Harrah’s or Oyster Bay Seafood & Wine Bar at Miracle Mile Shops.

F1 drivers of the future can test their skill levels at Pole Position Raceway, an indoor facility where souped-up electric karts powered by 18 horsepower motors reach speeds of up to 45 mph. As long as you’re at least 48 inches tall, prepare for some serious competition—after getting the hang of the physics in your first race, you’ll be aching to get back out on the course, trying to shave tenths of a second off your previous time. Make sure to bring more than one racer along—racing is always more fun with a group. And if you need a break, there’s an arcade with video games and four-way air hockey.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.

You’ll be required to wear a mask, and every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that all employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.

There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.

Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.

There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the area and there is space between each party to encourage social distancing. Each area is sanitized between each party.

Most restaurants require reservations, although not all.

Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers.

Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.

One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.

While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick.

Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever?
